FROM THE EDITOR > It doesn’t always seem like much fun when you have to work through summer, have indulged in far too much wine the previous night and a monumental hangover is proving to be impervious to even the strongest-brewed coffee. But hey… it’s summer, friends and family have gathered, and what better way to forget the dreary reality that your holidays this year are in November than by joining in for some robust al fresco entertaining. Whether it be in the shade of your garden pavilion or on the terrace of your apartment, enjoying a vibrant Mediterranean salad, exquisite shrimps and sumptuous rib eye on the barbecue, a jug of chilled sangria and invigorating company is what living on the Costa del Sol is all about. At least for the next two months… With that in mind, this issue we focus on the latest trends and enduring pleasures of “Summertime Entertaining”: cool shade protection, pool and decking, modular patio furniture, lounging options, ambience lighting, leisure accompaniments, and the all-important barbecue and outdoor kitchen. We also enter the magical world of mosaics, discovering why these flamboyant tiles have become so popular in recent years. For some seasonal inspiration, and ideas for future home refurbishments, we visited the trend-setting Casa Decor exhibition in Madrid, where design expression is allowed to run free and bold; and the Clerkenwell Design Week in the UK, with its accent on creative innovation. And, finally, we prepared for the sparkling month-long Starlite Festival in Marbella with our own summer fiesta, where we were delighted to present the winner of our dramatic makeover competition – while also enjoying a celebratory glass of cava. Not too much, of course, because deadlines beckoned and that pesky alarm clock was going to jangle early next morning. At least for some of us, but we’ll definitely be in a party mood again later – so save us a seat at the festive dining table!

This year we celebrated our Home & Lifestyle Magazine summer party with Ocean Clinic and Dental Care Marbella following a dramatic makeover competition run last year in conjunction with the two health and beauty establishments. Miguela Díaz won extensive facial and dental surgery courtesy of Ocean Clinic and Dental Care Marbella totally free of charge. Guests of all three companies gathered at the newly refurbished Güey Restaurant and Sky Bar for a lavish evening of drinks, canapés and music from Spectrum FM DJ Alex George and Motown singer Dru Chapman. Before the event, Miguela Díaz was also treated to a completely new and chic image thanks to expert hair stylist Amanda Marshall, while professional make-up artist and skin therapist Rachel Brewer put the final glamorous touches to Miguela’s face. Finally, international fashion designer Yamaia Fashiongyyrl Faye put together a beautiful purple outfit to top-off Miguela’s amazing new look. Miguela’s unveiling was presented by Güey’s general manager, Johnnie Gomez. Musical History An ultra-exclusive electric guitar inspired by Alfa Romeo’s design and heritage, this guitar has been created by Harrison Custom Guitar Works based in Yorkshire (UK). The “Alfa Romeo” is a completely custom-made design that draws inspiration from the style, materials and technology of the Italian brand’s road cars. Each guitar is hand-built to order and takes around eight months to complete. Just 11 guitars will be made, one for each decade of the brand’s history. www.harrisonguitars.co.uk

Kitty Trained Perhaps optimistically, this is being hailed as “the next logical evolution in feline domestication”. The Litter Kwitter comprises a radical three-step training system to teach cats to hop up on the toilet and do their business “like a real human – if humans had four legs and long tails which they used for stability”. The Litter Kwitter has been developed with animal behaviourists, vets and cat breeders “to make sure that it works alongside your cat’s natural instincts”. The universal base plate is fitted to the toilet seat and three training discs are attached. These are then progressively removed as the cat becomes more familiar with relieving itself on the loo. www.firebox.com

Elegant Protection Twelve South’s first MacBook case in three years, the premium genuine-leather Rutledge shelters MacBook between two hardback book covers and a rigid spine. Each cover is hand-finished with a new colour layering technique “that makes every Rutledge truly a one-of-a-kind work of art”. The Rutledge fits all current MacBooks, including a version made just for the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. www.twelvesouth.com
Safe Scenarios Described as the “world’s first production motorcycle wirelessly integrated with airbag riding jackets”, the Multistrada D-Air combines innovative designs from two famous Italian brands. The model features a fully integrated, intelligent system of sensors wirelessly connected to Ducati Apparel airbag jackets by Dainese. The sensors constantly understand the vehicle’s dynamic situation and deploy only when subjected to a genuine accident scenario. The Multistrada D-Air system completes the data analysis and airbag deployment inside both the rider and passenger jackets in just 45 milliseconds, considerably reducing the risk of injury upon impact. www.ducatiuk.com
Evolving Time Launched in 2011 and inspired by one of the brand’s legendary models, the Grande Seconde Quantième from Jaquet Droz reveals a new face and movement this year. For the first time, major changes have been made to the movement with the addition of a silicon balance spring and inversed horns on the pallets fork. Silicon can withstand shock and variations in temperature and pressure, and its properties allow it to remain unaffected by magnetic fields, maintaining perfect stability over time. www.jaquet-droz.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Vintage Storytelling A new business selling furniture, home wares and collectible toys, UK-based Raspberry Mash believes vintage items wear the past on their sleeves. “If only they could talk!” Stories about the people who once loved and used them… “Each groove, mark and sign of use gives us a glimpse into lives once lived and allow us to create new stories and memories of our own,” says Chloe Beattie, company co-founder (with Dale Broome). Mid-century design and industrial salvage feature in Raspberry Mash’s interiors – a mix of contemporary and old. “By adding some vintage pieces to a modern interior it makes your home stand apart from the norm, creating wonderful conversation pieces… We are deeply passionate about vintage items. We love the idea that you can bring something unique and full of character into your home and enjoy imagining whom it belonged to. Then you can enjoy creating new memories, breathing new life into each piece that you buy, making your home stand out from the crowd.” www.raspberrymash.co.uk

Natural Inspiration Alessi’s commitment to a “green” philosophy is reflected in two products presented in conjunction with World Environment Day on 5 June. Designed by Martí Guixé and part of the company’s home accessories series, the Seed Safe collects precious seeds and saves them in a stoneware pot – “as if they were small and precious gold pieces”. The Fat Tray, designed by Harri Koskinen, is made from environmentally friendly bamboo and can be used for storage or as a tray for a business meeting, afternoon tea or picnic. www.alessi.com

Mesmerising Mosaics
High-end Italian creativity and style from Mediterranea Mosaic Collection (Otranto) by SICIS (www.sicis.com)… available in Marbella from Gunni & Trentino (www.gunnitrentino.es)
Mosaic tiles are certainly becoming more popular, with exciting new ranges that add a touch of magic to your living space hailed as one of the biggest trends in bathrooms in 2013. Mosaics are compositions made up of small pieces or tesserae. They give energy and sumptuousness to a room by breaking up the uniformity of one sole wall design. They are also often found in decorative borders and swimming pools, or placed around a shower or washbasin. Mosaics have even entered into the world of street art, which has taken mosaic
38
artwork onto another level. The French Invader and Mark Kennedy are just two leading artists who have brought mosaics to the forefront. The French Invader models his mosaic work on the crude pixilation of 1970s 8-bit video games. He took his name from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders, and mainly composes square ceramic tiles inspired by video game characters. Mark Kennedy, from the UK, takes iconic images such as Ray Charles and Sophia Loren and gives them a new lease of life through mosaic.

Companies such as SICIS, Bisazza, Porcelanosa and Ezarri are all well known for their mosaics, and are considered as key trend-setting companies in the world of interior design. Mosaics bring an additional element to interior design that mixes an age-old tradition with new and exciting designs that can take centre stage in a room. Bisazza, a market-leading Italian glass mosaic brand for both interior and exterior decoration, has collaborated with the world’s leading figures in architecture, design, art and fashion including Marcel Wanders, Nendo, Patricia Urquiola and Paola Navone. Founded in 1956 in Alte in the province of Vicenza, today it is an avantgarde company characterised by the use of modern technologies and special attention to contemporary design. In 2006, Bisazza brought out its “Home” line, which is a collection of furniture and interior décor that combines mosaics with other materials. Five years later, Bisazza followed that collection with its bathroom range “Bagno” and created the Fondazione Bisazza, a new cultural space dedicated to contemporary architecture.

Peranakan white Neocolibri Collection (www.sicis.com)… available in Marbella from: Gunni & Trentino (www.gunnitrentino.es) SICIS focuses on technology to develop high-end products, combining Italian creativity and style. Italian Renaissance architecture was the inspiration behind the new furniture collection designed by architect Massimiliano Raggi, from Studio Raggi, together with the SICIS Lab team. The new collection was exhibited at the 2014 Salone del Mobile exhibition. Cabinets, sideboards and bar furniture were embellished with mosaic inserts and finishings, using precious materials, bronze and mirrored pieces of iconic Italian buildings such as the Venice clock tower, Bramante’s Tempietto situated in the S. Pietro Church in Rome and the basilica of Saint Paul. Their expert mosaic working was also seen on the headboard of one of the beds, creating a sublime three-dimensional effect where the glimmer of the tiny mosaic tesserae provided colour and an endless reverberation of light thanks to 800 hours of their labour.

The Chandelier & Mirror Company recently created a mosaic mannequin. This dazzling life-size mosaic mannequin represents a naked and svelte seated lady. She is leaning forward and slightly twisted to form a beautiful classic pose with the head elegantly looking up. The way the figure is sitting serves to create a dynamic arrangement, giving a sense of motion and exuberance. The figure is covered in small squares of mirrored glass held together with brilliant white plaster, providing a illuminated feel to the sculpture. This piece of artwork is contemporary, glamorous and flamboyant, and serves as an extremely eyecatching piece of mosaic artwork.

With outdoor relaxation and leisure such a key aspect of life in the sublimely pleasant climate of southern Spain, almost as much attention needs to be paid to the terrace, garden and pool areas as the interior décor. Certainly at this time of the year, when family are staying or visiting, and friends are popping in for a drink or even a long languid lunch – often extending well into the night! From mornings spent frolicking in the pool to afternoons relaxing under a shady pergola, and more informal evening dinner parties, entertaining in style is delightfully de rigeur in villas and apartments along the length and breadth of the Coast, and it is important – as a key first step – to get the furniture right: functional, comfortable and stylish. Outdoor areas are now increasingly seen as an extension of the home interior, so many items can be mixed and matched, depending on the season and time of day. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

By late morning, the summer sun heat can become quite uncomfortable, but certainly not intolerable with the addition of adequate shade protection. Parasols are an economical option for small groups, while shade sails, open tents, canopies and even pavilions (if space allows it) will be needed when entertaining en masse – or to shelter a play area for the youngsters. Glass curtains have also experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, perhaps most useful during the colder – or less warm – months but also a handy option if there is a chill in the night air, or the heady “terral” wind is blowing from northern Africa. One of the key pre-summer tasks is to update the pool and its surrounds – so most home-owners will already have that one ticked off from the to-do list – but now is still an excellent time to sit back and take in the whole scene, considering new ideas for 2015 and ways of making this prime entertainment area even more attractive, practical and safe. Contemporary decking, for example, includes numerous alternative materials to wood that are both less susceptible to climatic problems and more low-maintenance and long-lasting, while also creating a more elegant and inviting look.

French savoir vivre A combination of artistic lightness and distinctive form, Villeroy & Boch’s Artesano Provençal Collection features floral motifs and natural colours inspired by Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave’s many trips to Provence. This charming décor gives the clear lines of Artesano Original a touch of urban romance, the aim being “to strike a balance of floral country-chic and contemporary flair that would flatter the material-mix of the collection”. “When I think of the wonderful holidays that I spent with my family and friends in Provence I don’t only think of the famous fields of lavender but of the beautiful countryside all around, which is blessed with an incomparable intensity of

Casa Decor
TREND-SETTING AMBIENCES IN MADRID An exclusive exhibition highlighting latest styles and innovative trends in décor and interior decoration, Casa Décor is a month-long event centred on one of Madrid or Barcelona’s emblematic or historic buildings. The organisers undertake a significant rehabilitation of the building – this year Barquillo 12 – and together with top industry professionals and leading brands present 50 projects to a select public, covering all spaces, from halls and reception areas to lounge and dining rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, as well as outdoor areas and even a restaurant and auditorium. The inaugural exhibition was held in 1992 in a former convent in Calle General Oraá in Madrid, and was reported to have completely raised the bar on the “timid” world of decoration in the 1990s. In the intervening two decades, the exhibition has became a platform for open and free expression, for interior designers, decorators, architects, landscapers and artists, who all have the opportunity of developing their projects with no constraints. Casa Décor’s singularity is based on its prestige as one of Europe’s premier decoration, design and architecture showcases, as well as the widely varied and highly original options it highlights for those seeking inspiration for their home décor – comfortable, cosy, functional, imaginative and sustainable. Since 1992, Casa Decor has held 49 editions, including 22 in Madrid, a long and diversely rich journey that has covered mansions, banks, embassies, residential buildings, laboratories, offices, urban gardens, schools, convents and industrial plots. Located in the Justicia suburb in Madrid’s central district, this year’s Calle Barquillo venue was built in 1875 by the architect José Núñez Cortés, commissioned by Manuel Martín Oliva, in a typical 19th century style. It was purchased by the Official College of Architects in Madrid in 1950, and over time converted into offices – albeit preserving some of the original elements.

The month-long Casa Decor event also has a philanthropic element, opening its doors to a foundation or non-governmental organisation with the aim of helping to support, promote and spread the word about its social and humanitarian work. On this occasion, Casa DÊcor provided this platform to the Bobath Foundation, which works with people suffering from cerebral palsy – estimated to total 120,000 in Spain. www.casadecor.es

Clerkenwell has been closely associated with the creative arts throughout its recent history. The name Clerkenwell comes from the Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, where London parish clerks performed Medieval Mystery Plays during the Middle Ages. In the decades since the Industrial Revolution, the area has housed craft workshops, printers, clockmakers and jewellers, and traditional crafts such as printing and bookbinding still flourish. Over the past 20 years, Clerkenwell’s diverse array of buildings has been transformed into central studio and workshop spaces, attracting a concentration of architectural, design and creative practices. Conveniently accessible from London, Clerkenwell has become home to numerous new media agencies, graphic and interactive design studios and more than 200 architectural practices. It also houses over 60 design showrooms including Vitra, Poltrona Frau, Knoll and Steelcase.

No surprise then that, since its launch in 2010, the three-day Clerkenwell Design Week festival has become a key date on the international calendar for design industry professionals from the UK and throughout the world. This year, leading design names once again gathered in the heart of the historic neighbourhood to showcase their latest designs and innovations, with participating brands exhibiting across four key shows, Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions, as well as more than 60 local showrooms. One of the highlights of the 2014 edition was The Clerkenwell Collection, a retail and luxury lifestyle space that opened its doors as an official CDW showroom for the first time. The collection housed niche luxury brands by independent designer-makers and included a tailoring suite, art gallery, wine cellar and wine bar. www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com / www.theclerkenwellcollection.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Korsch Tischlerei. Interview with Felix Korsch
CREATORS OF STUNNING CUSTOM-MADE DESIGNS IN CARPENTRY
Tell us something about your professional background… and why did you choose to come to Spain? I learned my profession in Germany and, once I had my degree as a cabinet-maker, I followed that up by obtaining my master degree. I had been working in Germany as a master cabinet-maker for two years but then I decided to move to Spain to start my own company as I loved the country and I saw my future there. So far, I have not been disappointed, although we had some years of crisis, like everyone. What are the basic principles behind your work ethic? To make sure that everything is delivered on time and that my workers are skilled as cabinetmakers, providing high-standard work. Our philosophy is: the client is always king. How would you summarise the market at present and how you fit into this market? In the past, houses were built with standard materials but now people are ready to make a change. I think they are appreciating more quality work and wood for their interior decoration. What do you most enjoy about your work and what is your vision for the company? Touching wood! I always loved it. It is a moving, living material with lots of stories. I just love working with it. It brings the creativity out of me. My company is my baby and I wish to see it grow old.

How do you see the future of cabinet-making and wooden floors? I see it positively as people like to have their own personal style in their homes, and wood is a natural, warm material which can be used for any designs. Equally, many clients do not wish to have marble or tiled floors any more. Wood gives a warm feeling in their homes. What do you think is key to running a successful company in Spain? Lots of patience! Make sure you speak the language, and good communication with clients is very important. Always deliver good and professional work so that you keep your clients and they are happy to recommend you.
In conclusion… I came to Spain in 1992, to Marbella, and started small. I have always worked hard and the result today is that I have a good running business. My workers – Alex, Salvi, Miguel and Markus – speak various languages and have become very professional in our workshop. I trust them completely. The atmosphere at work is great: we are a team. We design, fabricate, paint and install all that we manufacture in our workshop. Korsch Tischlerei Pol. Ind. Elviria, Marbella. Tel. (+34) 655 946 941. www.korsch-tischlerei.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Extending over a majestic 2,000 square metres of built area in one of Europe’s most exclusive residential developments, this La Zagaleta property overlooks the Mediterranean like a watchtower. Stunningly designed on various levels, the villa almost seems to defy the laws of gravity. The house was constructed around a white arc central area on various levels, in the form of storeys superimposed with cantilevers more than three metres long. The storeys are distributed in such a way as to ensure the structural lines of move-
ment always face the sea. This makes it seem much closer – almost tangible. The distinctive ARK architecture features pure and contemporary lines with a significant Eastern influence, in both concept and shape. The resulting loft is highlighted by translucent natural light and dynamic spaces. The spa was created as a perfect complement to the villa, comprising a complete thermal circuit and latest-generation fittings and rooms. Scrupulously focused on elegance and functionality, the villa’s overall aesthetics have an outstanding individual character. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Modern Interpretation of Classic Architecture
ARK is committed to ongoing research into various traditional materials including iron, mortar and copper and the application of modern state-of-the-art techniques, enabling it to achieve eye-catching results with all its projects. The company is also closely involved with the interior decoration, creating the home as a whole – not in an isolated fashion – with the landscape, exterior design, architecture and decoration all blending together to ensure a harmonious finished home – like the property featured here. With more than a decade of experience in the construction sector, ARK comprises a multi-disciplinary team of technical architects specialising in the different fields of building and town planning. The company currently has two offices offering all the necessary resources and the highest quality standards. In designing spaces that are completely devoid of visual barriers, ARK achieves a perfect symbiosis between distinctive architectural styles to ensure maximum

advantage is taken of the Mediterranean’s famed light. An intelligent mix of light and shadow, and warmth and freshness, finds its way into all the corners of an ARK home. Lofty windows let in as much natural light as possible and small strategically placed details ensure intimacy and privacy. Committed to excellence, ARK pays special attention to materials, selecting them all meticulously, and also gives the same importance to landscape and surroundings as to the actual house itself – “since we are dealing with living things”. When IDDOMUS takes on a new project the first priority is designing and developing an innovative villa that incorporates the highest quality and guarantees – even beyond those established by law. But that is just part of the company’s business model and philosophy. Far from just handing over the key, saying “Nice to have met you” and moving on to the next project, the Costa del Sol-based developer maintains an ongoing relationship with clients, branding each villa with the IDDOMUS Signature Project plaque and maintaining a detailed database of all specs for homeowners’ future reference.
This provides added value to the property – and, just as important, long-term peace of mind. Recognised for modern, minimalist and functional design, and the exceptional quality of their construction and finishes, IDDOMUS villas are built to northern European standards, ensuring the solidity and longevity of a construction process that is executed in an optimal time-frame. This innovative and certified process is based on the Belgian modular concrete building system SISMO (www.sismo.eu), which ensures maximal stability and superior quality, allowing for reduced construction time. As part of its fully comprehensive and personalised service of design, development and construction of bespoke turnkey villas, IDDOMUS commits to the management and fulfilment of each and every step of the development process, offering clients the security of one single firm with all departments on board. The company maintains regular dialogue with clients, right from the initial selection of the plot and its pertaining geotechnical and topographical study, design of the villa, choice of finishes, development of plans, licensing and all bureaucratic procedures, down to the actual building execution, utility connections and final details. This allows clients to follow the process closely – without the hands-on hassle. Following the purchase of the plot, each phase of the construction is audited and certified by an independent inspection entity (OCA-Socotec). Only after the pertaining certificate is issued is the client billed for the finished and certi-
76
fied sector of the project. This procedure is applied to each phase up to completion. As noted above, every IDDOMUS house is signed and issued with its own unique serial number, registered in the firm’s database with all the specifications pertaining to the project, for access and reference by the current or future owners. Homeowners are also able to take advantage of special service and maintenance programmes offered by IDDOMUS. IDDOMUS Signature Projects Marbella Tel. The Stand-Off Begins As we reported in a previous column in Home & Lifestyle Magazine, the local real estate market is really beginning to tighten up in its key locations. Respected professionals in the business have been reporting a definite shortening of the gap between a property’s asking price and eventual selling price in the last few months. As we expected (and predicted in our previous column) more buyers are now entering the market, and this increase in activity has alerted buyers to the prospect of a rising market. Their reaction? To hold firmer on their asking prices. Within our own business in the last two weeks, we have seen a Spanish vendor attempting to increase her asking price even after a deal had been agreed; and a British vendor deciding to up his asking price by 20 per cent despite receiving a cash offer just five per cent below the asking price – and having had his property on the market for over three years! This behaviour causes enormous confusion and frustration for prospective buyers. Most educated property hunters are well-researched and realise that the days of “giveaway” properties are over in the best areas of the Costa del Sol, but
By Sean Woolley
they still rightly expect to be able to agree a decent deal, particularly if they are mortgage-approved or are cash buyers. Yet it seems that we have hit a stand-off in the market: sellers are becoming more confident, while buyers are increasingly becoming the victims of these raised expectations. Sellers may well be right. We seem to be emerging from a crippling recession, and people seem to be in the mood to spend their money once again, but sellers also need to remember that, in most cases, buyers don’t actually need a second home on the Costa del Sol. It is a luxury for most of them – a desire rather than a necessity. While buyers will be frustrated by vendors changing their minds and upping their prices, this doesn’t represent a total calamity for most property hunters. They will normally bide their time or turn their attention to other options in the market. This is a risk that most sellers are reluctant to take but, with the Brits starting to return to the market en masse after sterling’s recent rise against the euro past the 1.25 mark, who’s to say that there aren’t further price rises on the way?

Garden Landscape >
Lighten Up!
By Beatrice S. De Perlac
It’s summer – and time to lighten up your garden. Most of your evening parties and dinners are outdoors so why not make this summer unique and lighten up your exterior space with new ideas. Depending on what elements we choose, and how we lighten them up, our garden will give us a totally different ambience. If you are in a party mood I would definitely go for LED RGB changing colour. For example, you can very easily change your swimming pool lights to LED RGB and obtain a super fun water colour; or change a couple of garden projectors to pink, green or blue and make them your focal points. Led Strips are also useful and easy to install. You can find garden furniture that lights up, but I suggest you choose carefully since some of them can become a little uncomfortable for the eyes. Then again, if you are searching for a more romantic ambience, I would suggest you use some “star“ lighting, which until now has mostly been used during the Christmas season. Do not forget always to choose warm lights for this effect. Also, use natural lighting such as candles wherever it is possible to achieve a cosy atmosphere. If you find it difficult to choose where and what kind of lighting to use, do not hesitate to call me. Adarve Garden Design Studio Tel. (+34) 652 426 851 www.beatriceperlac.com

Bucking the normal trend on a party island that tends to keep to a party season, Ocean Drive owner Marc Rahola opens his hotel all year round. Nevertheless, even though guests are able to enjoy “a rejuvenating island retreat beyond Ibiza’s legendary summer nightlife”, the hotel remains best known for its “insider access” to the island’s thriving club scene and often plays host to high-profile DJs on Ocean Drive’s scenic chill-out lounge terrace. Also unlike at other hotels on the island, breakfast is served until 4 pm, super convenient for lazy mornings after a late night/early morning of drinks and dancing. Aesthetically, it combines retro glamour with art deco design, inspired by the architecture of Miami’s South Beach, as well as New York’s roaring twenties. The art deco aesthetic is reflected in its Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier furniture. All of the 40 elegant guestrooms – offering flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, two-line telephone, mini-bar and safe – were entirely renovated in 20092010, and are outfitted in mellow tones of lavender and chocolate, with views of either the Mediterranean or Ibiza’s mountain vistas. EL GECKO HOTEL
Charming Riverside and Mountain Retreat
By Annabel Milnes-Smith
Located in Cortes de la Frontera, the hotel is a wonderful getaway for residents and visitors seeking peace, tranquillity, fine wines and gourmet dining in the heart of the Andalucian countryside.
Many living on the coast think that Marbella is the ultimate heavenly destination to visit or reside in. What more could one ask for than sun, sea, sand, seafood and sangria? Until now. El Gecko Hotel is a mere one-hour’s drive from the coast and located in the perfect position for visitors, expats and residents alike to explore Andalucía. It is also only 50 metres from a picturesque train station where one can travel to historic locations such as Ronda, Granada and San Roque, or to the coastal town and surfers’ paradise of Tarifa. Now under new management with chef Greg Wroblewski and Sarah O`Mahony, the hotel prides itself on personal, individual and attentive service. Having five en-suite bedrooms, all with vaulted ceilings and exposed timbers, free Wi-Fi, views of the river and mountains, guests are able to luxuriate in what feels like a “five-star” hotel. Waking in the morning to a sumptuous Mediterranean breakfast, sitting and relaxing by the swimming pool, listening to the peace and quiet of the surrounding area prior to lunch and following a siesta, dining al fresco style on the riverside terrace before retiring to a slumber sanctuary with central heating and ceiling fans to ensure a temperature-controlled, undisturbed night, no matter what the season… One visitor recalled their first visit to the hotel. “I drove up, stopped in Gaucín
for a coffee at this hillside bar that boasts spectacular views to the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa, and 15 minutes later I arrived at El Gecko Hotel, settled in and enjoyed a welcome drink. “At around midday I headed to the station, two minutes’ walk away, to visit Ronda. It was a lovely journey through the river valley and the mountains. On arrival I walked down to a tapas bar near the oldest bullring in Spain. I had a tasty lunch with a few drinks, walked back to the station and caught the 4pm train. Came back here at 5, and had a siesta before enjoying a fantastic dinner. Their extensive three-course a la carte international menu was prepared by Greg, whose culinary background certainly reflected the high standard of delicious and fresh cuisine presented that evening at El Gecko Hotel. “The following morning I sat outside on the terrace, which faces east with the sun streaming in, overlooking the river. My trip over 24 hours was an amazing experience. I felt like I had been away for a week, not just one day.” El Gecko Hotel is undoubtedly a rare jewel in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. SEAT IBIZA CUPSTER
Innovative design for a classic showpiece 86

Seat celebrated the 30th anniversary of its iconic Ibiza model with the special presentation of a new design study at the 2014 Wörthersee Treffen car festival in Austria. Created and built by Seat design, the Ibiza Cupster is a one-off open-top show car based on the series production Ibiza Cupra, with its 180 PS TSI engine and DSG dual-clutch transmission. In Cupster form, the concept model is lower and wider than its racy predecessor. The two-seater car has no roof, the front windscreen has been replaced with a wrap-around strip window, and the seating position is 80 millimetres lower than the series-production car. “The Ibiza has always been the heart of Seat,” says Jürgen Stackmann, president of Seat S.A., “a young, dynamic car
with an emotional design, a good head for the practical things in life and excellent value for money.” Capturing classic Ibiza imagination “with a design that is as emotional as it is dynamic”, the Cupster’s steering wheel is swathed in pure aniline leather and the paint work is a custom “New Orange” hue, with a dark grey cover behind the classic “double-bubble” style seats. The interior has a traditional racing feel, with the lead being taken from the Ibiza Trophy race car for a design that features minimalist instrument dials, black Alcantara upholstery and low-slung bucket seats. As for performance, the Cupra-based Cupster is equipped with a powerful 180 PS from the 1.4 TSI engine, super-fast gear changes thanks to the DSG transmission, and precision sports running gear with 18-inch wheels. LA SALA BY THE SEA
Elegant culinary experience… from day-time to evening
Photos: David Toms
The La Sala Group has built-up a fantastic reputation for offering good quality food and beverages in a modern and lively environment. Over the years we have seen the La Sala Group constantly evolving, so what did they have in store for us this year? Previously called La Sala Beach, this elegant beach club near Puerto Banús has been transformed into the very elegant La Sala by the Sea. Now, you don’t just have the opportunity to visit this exclusive Marbella venue during the day, but you can also enjoy a sophisticated dining experience next to the Mediterranean Sea at night. Shortly after their launch party earlier this summer, Home & Lifestyle Magazine paid a visit one evening to La Sala by the Sea to see what changes have been made... As you enter the select surroundings of La Sala by the Sea, you are met by soothing music and friendly welcoming staff. The decoration is sophisticated and natural, with the general colour scheme brown, cream and white. The lighting is subtle, with LED lights illuminating the vegetation and adding a natural feel. One of the many changes from last year is a fountain placed in the centre of the newly-reformed swimming pool. The sound of the constant flow of water from the fountain is extremely soothing and makes the establishment feel invigoratingly fresh. One familiar feature from last season at the beach club is an eyecatching Balinese structure where you can dine while enjoying stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea; or alternatively you can eat downstairs, inside the
90
structure, for a more intimate covered dining area, adorned with beautiful Chinese lampshades in perfect harmony with their oriental menu. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was offered the chance to try some of the dishes from their new menu, so we ordered the mixed Thai tapas, an ample portion of tantalising Asian hors d’oeuvres accompanied by various dips served on a piece of slate. This spectacular-looking dish for €25 is excellent value and hugely satisfying. We also tried the fried salmon on a bed of asparagus and sweet Thai chilli. The succulent meaty chunks of perfectly cooked salmon, with the al dente asparagus and tangy sweet Thai chilli, made this dish both delightfully well balanced and totally delicious. One of their most popular dishes is the Pad Thai, which we ordered with chicken. Once again, we were treated to a generous portion that was beautifully presented and packed with flavour. It is safe to say that La Sala by the Sea is another triumph for the La Sala Group. Their chef, Ramón Benítez, has created a clever menu that is varied, inventive and good value for money. With the option to dine on white tablecloths, on a sun lounger or by the bar, this stunning beach club offers something for everyone, no matter what kind of mood you are in. La Sala by the Sea Urb. BEATA’S VINO Y MAR
Charming ambience
with a delightful touch of eccentricity
Photos: Johnny Gates
Beata’s Vino y Mar restaurant in Aloha opened its doors in June offering a wide range of international tapas as well as salads, steaks, fish and seafood dishes at extremely reasonable prices. Beata is Polish and quite a character. Already the owner of two successful restaurants, one in Poznan in Poland and another in Berlin (Germany), Beata has extensive experience in running restaurants. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to the Marbella establishment to take a look around and try out some of their dishes... The restaurant is located where the old Aloha Café used to be in Nueva Andalucía, and to enter you need to go up some steps – where we were greeted by Beata with open arms on a delightful terrace. We were immediately impressed by stunning views over the valley which are unsurpassed by any of their neighbouring restaurants. The décor is rustic and, like Beata, a little eccentric, with wooden chairs and tables that have all been restored from second-hand items adding a certain charm to the
92
place. Inside there are more tables with a bar and an interesting collection of wines, together with a random German ham slicer which Beata calls her “Rolls Royce”. We were treated to various dishes from their tapas menu, ranging from traditional Spanish delicacies such as fried whitebait and Iberian ham to Polish delicacies including ravioli stuffed with mixed mincemeat. Beata’s Vino y Mar is perfect for both a quick snack or a more substantial meal as the menu is extremely varied. The perfect time to visit would be just before sunset as the views really come into their own around then. Open every day for lunch and dinner, this restaurant is a definitely fun place to visit. LA GRANADA DIVINO
A Gourmet Jewel in the Heart of Gaucín By Annabel Milnes-Smith
Milan Varmuza, the architect of such iconic establishments as Puente Romano Hotel, MC Café at the Marbella Club and Polo House, decided in February this year that it was time to join the ranks of the restaurant brigade with his wife Gina. By 16 April, having energetically restored this popular family restaurant in the beautiful “pueblo blanco” village of Gaucín, their dream was born. The three-storey restaurant includes a private dining room complete with an 18th century refectory table that can accommodate up to 14 people, and one terrace area located at the pinnacle of the building, aptly named The Eagles Nest, where clientele have a 360-degree bird’s eye view over the breathtaking and spectacular surrounding countryside. Their menu offers delicious, affordable food with locally sourced ingredients, an idealised spin on old-fashioned Spanish fare with local, regional and international cuisine together with pizzas from their recently installed pizza oven. Their wine list is varied, reasonably priced and “refreshingly” sourced from Spanish family-owned vineyards. I was fortunate to be invited by Milan and Gina to have lunch. While enjoying my complimentary aperitif of gazpacho with a sprinkling of palma ham, I perused their a la carte menu. What immediately struck me was, although the menu has a selection of four starters and six main courses, it offers a diverse se-
94
lection of Spanish and international dishes which vary according to the season. I opted for the chicken terrine of the day, which was mouth-watering, followed by sea bream fillets on a confit of cherry tomatoes, pesto Genovese and crispy jamón serrano. A friend who had joined me ordered spicy fishcakes and a Caprese salad followed by prime Black Aberdeen Angus steak of the day with wasabi and herb butter and hand-cut chunky chips. The third member of our party relished the vegetarian risotto. All main courses are served with roasted vegetables. We finished with a selection of desserts including sticky toffee pudding with almond praline and butterscotch sauce, lemon grass and coconut panna cotta with chocolate brownie and a platter of local cheese served with glasses of Muscatel. The consensus of opinion throughout was that the restaurant, although recently opened, was worthy of a Michelin star! Praise indeed for chef Neil Brown. “Speak to Me”
Dozens of Spanish bodegas are owned by investors who earned their money in other fields, usually property and construction, and during the recession these are the wineries with the highest casualty rates, many up for sale or with financial problems. José Civantos and Juan Tirado are two very rich self-made businessmen, Civantos as founder of Spain’s largest courier company, Seur, and Tirado as owner of the Tasa property and construction group. Their ambition was to make their mark on the wine world and, since both are from Extremadura, it was no surprise when they chose Trujillo to invest €40 million in a state-of-the-art wine production plant – 250 hectares of vineyards and the ambition to make the “Vega Sicilia of the region”. They got the best specialists, the best machinery, the best consultants, all resulting in the Habla brand. The media agency explained that when Michelangelo finished his life-like sculpture of Moses he tapped it on the knee and said, “Speak to me.” Faithful to the innovative element of the project, the bottles were, indeed are, Italian-designed black glass, their shape reminiscent of perfume flasks. In another pioneering development, the wines are referred to as Habla 1, Habla 2, etc., on the basis that each vintage is different so each will have its number rather than name.

By Ana Gil Peña
I was at the presentation of Habla in Marbella in 2006, a glitzy affair at the Hotel Guadalpin. We were all stupefied by the mega-project, the huge investment, and the fact it would take decades to show any return. The wines were, and are, good, in fact amazingly good considering the poor soil and extreme temperatures of the chosen region, home of the humble “vino de pitarra”. Grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Shiraz and Tempranillo, all organic, and the minimalist information on the bottle tells the drinker what tasting sensation to expect. The vast winery structure boasts a restaurant, gym and jacuzzi, and the nearby stables house a collection of thoroughbred horseflesh. All in all, probably the most impressive wine investment ever undertaken in Spain, but of course throwing money at something does not guarantee it will work. Habla wines are very good, and getting better all the time, but financial complications have provoked a major re-think since the early days. The original price was around €40, clearly high for an unknown and unproven product, but this has now been cut in half with the young wine at around €6-€7 – very good value bearing in mind the quality. Habla is now a standard on top restaurant wine lists. (Bodegas Lara is the distributor in Málaga Province.)

CREATIVE JEWELLERY
Award-winning pieces from Finnish artist Björn Weckström
A reformer of Finnish jewellery art whose unique style has attracted national and international attention since the 1960s, Björn Weckström won the prestigious 2013 Kaj Franck Design Prize awarded by Design Forum Finland. Weckström was among the first designers to combine new materials such as acrylic with traditional precious metals. His creations include the Space Silver collection, which was both miniature sculpture and miniature landscapes. In addition to his extensive jewellery output, mostly for the Lapponia company, Weckström has also created works in sculpture – many inspired by the mythology of Antiquity. The prize jury noted that Björn Weckström’s identity as an artist was of a markedly classical orientation. “It is based on a thorough knowledge of culture, crafts skills, his vision as an artist, and ethical standpoints. Weckström has explicitly sought to provoke and pose questions in both his jewellery and sculptures and he has been attuned to his times in an uncompromising and astute manner.” The Kaj Franck Design Prize is awarded annually to a designer or team “innovatively creating both high-quality industrial design and unique, one-off works”. www.designforum.fi

Medical Minutes CUTTING-EDGE ADVICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Breath Test May be Important New Tool against Lung Cancer
American researchers have now come up with a new breath test that can diagnose patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as cancer. In addition, this new technology can help define the stage of any cancer present and potentially help guide the appropriate therapy. “This could totally revolutionise lung cancer screening and diagnosis,” said Dr. Fred Hirsch, who is with the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. “The perspective here is the development of a non-traumatic, easy, cheap approach to early detection and differentiation of lung cancer.” The device requires blowing up a balloon, which is then attached to an extremely sensitive gold nanoparticle sensor. The sensor analyses volatile organic compounds in the exhaled breath. A USB device can be plugged into a computer for rapid analysis. “The metabolism of lung cancer patients is different than the metabolism of healthy people,” said Dr. Hirsch. It is these differences in metabolism that can define the signatures of healthy breath, COPD or lung cancer. The device’s potential uses go beyond diagnosis. This may become a very important tool for monitoring how well a patient responds to specific treatments. A breath now and a breath after treatment could define whether a patient should stay with a drug regimen or explore other options. Dr. Hirsch said the next generations of the device could potentially help doctors quickly, simply and inexpensively define patients’ lung cancer subtypes. This would allow for more tailored treatment with new molecularly targeted therapies. Prunes May Have a Hidden Health Benefit
British researchers are reporting that eating prunes may help improve weight loss. At the University of Liverpool, a trial was conducted to see if adding prunes to your daily diet led to weight gain or weight loss. Consumption of dried fruit is not readily recommended during weight loss despite evidence it enhances feelings of fullness. However, the study showed that eating prunes might be highly beneficial if you are trying to drop a few kilograms. The study included 100 overweight and obese individuals who consumed a low fibre diet. Over a 12-week period, the researchers looked at whether low fibre consumers could tolerate eating substantial numbers of prunes in their diet, and if eating prunes every day (140 grams a day for women and 171 grams for men) had a beneficial effect on appetite. The volunteers were divided into two groups: those who ate prunes every day and those who were given advice on healthy snacks.
By John Schieszer
The researchers found that members of the group who ate prunes as part of a healthy lifestyle diet lost significant amounts of weight and ended up with smaller waists. “These are the first data to demonstrate both weight loss and no negative side effects when consuming prunes as part of a weight management diet. Indeed, in the long term they may be beneficial to dieters by tackling hunger and satisfying appetite, a major challenge when you are trying to maintain weight loss,” said lead study investigator Dr. Jo Harrold, who is a psychologist at the University of Liverpool. A New Approach to Combating Alzheimer’s disease
Studies are now suggesting that a commonly prescribed antidepressant (citalopram) and possibly its chemical cousins may help delay the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Investigators have found that in young adults who were cognitively healthy a single dose of the antidepressant lowered by 37 per cent the production of amyloid beta, the primary ingredient in brain plaques. Brain plaques are tied closely to memory problems and other cognitive impairments caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Stopping plaque build-up may halt the mental decline that comes with this disease. Amyloid beta is a protein produced by normal brain activity. Levels of this protein rise in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s, causing it to clump together into plaques. Plaques also are sometimes present in cognitively normal brains. Previous studies have shown that serotonin (a chemical messenger in the brain) reduces amyloid beta production. Although the findings are encouraging, the researchers caution that it is premature to take citalopram or any antidepressants solely to slow the development of Alzheimer’s disease. “Antidepressants appear to be significantly reducing amyloid beta production, and that’s exciting,” said study investigator John Cirrito, PhD, who is at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. “But while antidepressants generally are well tolerated, they have risks and side effects. Until we can more definitively prove that these drugs help slow or stop Alzheimer’s in humans, the risks aren’t worth it. There is still much more work to do.” For their investigation, the scientists gave a single dose of citalopram to 23 people ages 18 to 50 who were not cognitively impaired or depressed. Samples of spinal fluid taken from the participants over the next 24 hours showed a 37 per cent drop in amyloid beta production. A trial is now underway with older adults.

George Braque’s Cubist work in the early 1900s was closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso, but it was the more publicly flamboyant Spaniard who went on to enjoy greater global fame. One of the avant-garde art scene’s most prominent figures in the 20th century, the French painter, collagist and sculptor made a major contribution to Fauvinism as well as Cubism.
108
Braque died in August 2013 and to mark that 50th anniversary the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Réunion des Musées Nationax-Grand Palais, in collaboration with the Centre national d’art et de culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, have organised a retrospective that aims to highlight his pivotal, yet often underestimated, role in the history of art.

Colourful Fusion of East and West

Colour is the main protagonist of Spain-based Russian artist Muhadin Kishev’s vivid and luminous work. Featured in an exhibition on show at El Corte Inglés Costa Marbella in Puerto Banús until 31 July, his art is described as “strong, powerful, rhythmic and at times unexpected, with a never-ending abundance of fine subtleties, combinations, contrasts”. Both his life and his art constitute a fusion of East and West, with Spain having a particularly marked impact on his work. Noting that his lifestyle is “spartan and athletic”, he says he feels at home in Andalucía, where he lives and works in his studio in Los Caños de Meca in Cádiz province – marvelling at the beauty of the world around him and recreating this in his imagination “to produce a work of art that is also beauty”.

19-26 July
1 August
The Nerja Cave Festival makes an appearance for yet another year in the summer months. With music and dance performances, the 550 privileged spectators can enjoy concerts by renowned artists in an unrivalled setting – the Nerja Cave. A prehistoric cave with exceptional acoustics makes this festival completely unique. Diana Navarro, from the National Ballet of Peru, and flamenco dancer Carmen Linares are some of the performers who will be seen at the festival. Furthermore, concerts and performances by artists such as Nuria Fergó and Ara Malikian will be held at the Balcón de Europa.
When it comes to well-known DJs, they don’t get much bigger than David Guetta. He’ll be bringing his very in-demand show to the San Pedro de Alcántara Municipal Stadium on 1 August, which I’m sure will be a sell-out event. He is no stranger to Marbella, with a few appearances in Puerto Banús over the last few years. Those gigs saw people from all over the Coast descend on Marbella in order to get a glimpse of the master at work. He really was the talk of the town for weeks and tickets sold out in minutes. He will also be playing in Mallorca and Madrid so it really shows how important Marbella is to the concert and club circuit, with the city chosen alongside Spain’s capital and Mallorca. Tickets are available from www.viagogo.es
SOULFRITO MUSIC FESTIVAL
EARTH WIND AND FIRE
26 July During the hottest summer months in Spain we can now expect some of the hottest acts. With the Soulfrito Music Festival coming to the Coast this July, two big names accompanying it are Rudimental and Ruth Lorenzo. The boys from Hackney are the main headliners for the festival and will be performing their DJ set, which is sure to blow the roof off, even if there isn’t one! The Brit Award holders will be accompanied by powerful former Spanish Eurovision entrant Ruth Lorenzo, who will be performing some of her newest songs and some of her old fan favourites. This exceptional festival on 26 July is set to be one of the major concerts for people to visit this summer. Tickets are available for €20 from all Ticketmaster outlets.
12 August Earth Wind and Fire are world famous for songs such as “Boogie Wonderland” and “September”. They have performed all over the world at some of the most famous festivals and venues and now they are adding the Puente Romano to their extensive list. The band is set to win over the Marbella scene on 12 August, performing their international hits at the Tennis Club, Puente Romano Hotel. This spectacular concert is a must for anyone who wants to re-live the wonders of the late ‘70s (bad hairstyles and flares anyone?). The Final Word > Specialist Advice
European Support for Bank Lending now stands alongside Greece and Spain with the unenviable task of finding a solution. Overall the number of unemployed across the eurozone did dip to 11.7% but as usual we have the good and the bad. The good comes from Austria at 4.9% unemployed, Germany at 5.2% and Luxembourg at 6.1%. GDP across the zone came in as expected with growth of 0.2% in the first quarter of 2014, and there is an expectation that quarter two will be even better. To address doubters Draghi did also explain that the exchange rate is not a target and he is currently happy with the data from the zone although he did add that the zone should not become complacent. Before leaving the eurozone, from 2015 we will see our 19th member as Lithuania joins, having fulfilled the necessary requirements. Praise indeed, as other countries missed the cut. Back in the UK…
By Stephen Tiley Well that was the week that was... (at the time of writing back in early June). All the attention had been on the European Central Bank and what it would do to support the euro, and of course president Mario Draghi and his committee did not fail to deliver. The main interest rate was reduced to 0.15%, down from 0.25%, and that is a new record low. In addition he has imposed negative interest rates of -0.1% on eurozone banks in the hope it will encourage them to lend to the general public and small firms rather than save their cash. The ECB added further weight by agreeing a new targeted programme that will make available around €400 billion of cheap credit to banks, to in turn lend to small businesses. For a moment let’s take a look at this scheme, labelled Long Term Refinancing Operation, designed to help the real economy and priced at a rate of just 10 basis points over the refinancing rate (currently 0.15%). It means banks will be able to borrow around seven per cent of the total value of their loans, excluding mortgage lending, which should mean good news for businesses. Then there is also the possibility of allowing commercial banks to combine their new business loans into new security then sell it on! I seem to recall a similar situation with mortgages not that long ago. In addition, the ECB revised its inflation rate, which is currently 0.5%, from a targeted 2% to 0.7% this year, reaching 1.1% next year – and if all things are equal it will reach 1.6% in 2016. Draghi now accepts that inflation will remain low for the time being.
In the UK it is as it was: when the Bank of England met it held rates and there was no talk of further money printing. Small business, however, could be exempt from business rates under reforms being discussed, and that will help further stimulate the economy although the treasury has to weigh up the potential loss of around £27 billion it collects from this source. Indicators are that we will see the number of unemployed continue to fall as the UK service sector maintains its previous growth. Houses and their prices are still of concern, with price growth of 11.1% recoded nationwide in May, a 13th successive monthly increase although some parts of the UK still struggle. The big question of course is how to apply measures to the south-east and stop a potential overheating while supporting other areas not quite blessed with the price rises associated with the London area. A slightly bigger risk will come if the Bank of England decides to increase interest rates. At the present time, with newly introduced mortgage measures, applications and approvals have slowed down. However, as lenders and borrowers become used to the new criteria we will see the number of applicants return to the 70,000 per month mark. The International Monetary Fund has praised the UK economic recovery, which is a major turnaround from last year’s comments when it was warning of the dangers of austerity. Banks again hit the headlines with Lloyds looking to sell a 25% stake in TSB and keen to get the offer price correct: too high and it could reflect a Saga offering but the right price could see investors make a “tidy” return and set the path for a further offer. Coutts have taken decisive action in writing to thousands of customers to warn them they may have received incorrect advice and been sold risky investments. At least they are being proactive, but you cannot escape the fact this is a black mark against them. With a general lack of confidence in banks, both Marks and Spencer and Tesco (for the first time) have introduced a current account to their database. Virgin money is also expected to join in soon. Finally, before leaving news from the UK, car sales are once again up and show a 7.7% increase, and the Ford Fiesta tops the list of the most purchased cars. And the USA…
Positive Signs
Investor confidence in the recovery of the Spanish economy is being seen in 10-year bond yields around 2.6%, which is remarkable when you consider not that long ago the danger rate of 7% was being breached. Ireland has also seen its 10-year bond yields record lows of around 2.4% – again, a remarkable transformation. Eurozone confidence in June was quite high as we had data that showed retail sales rose in April by 0.4% month on month and are now up 2.4% annually. The Easter bunny did not fail to deliver (see the last edition). Youth unemployment is still an issue and has risen in Italy to a new high, so Italy
114
In the United States, the economy continues its recovery as the number of people returning to work once again tops the 200,000 mark in a month, and the number of unemployed is now back to the level it was before the recession took a hold. Add that to growth in the service sector and you can understand why confidence at the moment is high.
