INTEGRAL PROJECTS - CONTRACT

“Bottega Veneta Salone Del Mobile” created by Dimore Studio… part of Maison & Objet’s “scènes d’intérieur” exhibition: www.maison-objet.com

FROM THE EDITOR > There is something particularly alluring about the living room. Other main rooms in the home - kitchen, bathroom and bedroom – tend to be more utilitarian, although each has its own complementary appeal. Dining in the kitchen, for example (if space allows it), or hovering near the fridge sipping on a beer and “supervising” the cook; luxuriating in a jacuzzi in the bathroom; or various non-sleeping options in the bedroom, some best not detailed in a family magazine. But the living room is – well – for living. From sitting quietly alone in the morning reading the newspaper with a frothy coffee, watching the snooker or golf on TV later that afternoon with a couple of mates or playing charades with the family after dinner, to entertaining a larger group of friends and family for a special celebration… the living room is both a haven and a lifestyle statement. As we note in our main “Décor & Design” feature this issue, it is also ever-growing: sometimes extending into the kitchen and frequently to the outdoor terrace area, though – mercifully – not yet to the bathroom. In other highlights this issue we have an expanded section on environmentally friendly products and developments from around the world; showcase an array of high-tech gadgets for the home; add a touch of chic illumination to dark corners or areas of the home in need of a bit of sparkle; and offer a host of trend-setting ideas for outdoor living – still a key part of life on the Costa del Sol, even as summer blends into autumn. Elsewhere, we take a road trip to Burgundy – or, more accurately, a barge trip – and, still in France, preview the Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris, where we will be heading in September to check out latest trends and innovations that would make a perfect fit in southern Spain’s contemporary homes – especially the living room.

PROPANA ESTATES

Presentation of Cutting-Edge Real Estate App Propana Estates have launched a cutting edge real estate app for vendors and purchasers in southern Spain. The Propana Virtual Real Estate Viewing app “aims to reduce the amount of time wasted by clients looking for property on the Coast”. It has two functions. The first allows clients to scan “Se Vende” or “For Sale” signs with their smartphone. The app is built on new “Augumented Reality” technology, enabling it to recognise the image printed on the “Se Vende” sign and overlay information on top of the sign including images, videos, property sizes, features and floor plans. Clients can therefore see more information about the property before they book a viewing, which means they are booking appointments for properties in areas they are familiar with armed with much more information about the property. “Less time is wasted by the client and the vendor will only be showing their property to clients who already know the details and have seen images of the property before booking.” The second function of the app allows clients to search for property through their smartphone in a specific area. By clicking “scan” in the Propana app, the client will see all of the properties for sale in a specified distance. “This way they will only be searching for property in areas they are comfortable with.” According to Propana Estates, the real estate sales arm of the Propana Group, they are utilising this technology, together with other marketing tools, “to help clients market their property more efficiently”. As Propana Estates managing director Caroline Armstrong notes, “Real estate companies today need to be more proactive when selling property.” The Propana Property App will be available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices through the app store or Android Play Store from mid-September. News & Events > MICHELIN GUIDE

Marbella to Host Lavish Gala Presentation

Marbella will become the focal point of Spanish gourmet cuisine in November when the city hosts the glittering official gala presentation of the 2015 Michelin Guide. In previous years only Madrid, Barcelona and the Basque Country have hosted the event, which brings together all Spain’s two and three-star Michelin chefs, including Marbella’s own Dani García – who attended the official press launch in July and will also be overseeing the menu for the gala. The gala presentation will be held at the Los Monteros Hotel on 9 November. Marbella has two other one-star Michelin restaurants, El Lago and Skina, while there is a fourth in Málaga province, José Carlos García, located in the city’s Muelle Uno portside setting. www.monteros.com

COSTA WOMEN

Launch of New Networking Group in Manilva Offering women in the local business community a “friendly and open environment to build their network, find suppliers and make new contacts”, a new group is being launched in Sabinillas in September by Shaw Marketing Services in association with Costa Women and supported by the Manilva Town Hall. Costa Women is a social community and business-networking group for women living in Spain. It provides online and offline networking opportunities for over 3,000 members and is free to join. The aim of the new Manilva business group is to be an addition to their networking calendar for women in business on the western Costa del Sol. The launch will be held on 17 September from 6.30 to 8.00pm in Villa Matilde in Sabinillas. The monthly event will cost €5 (to include the networking activities and refreshments) and will take place on the third Wednesday of each month. To register email info@shawmarketingservices.com or visit www.shawmarketingservices.com. In other Costa Women news, in July members celebrated their third annual summer party at Miraflores Restaurant, where the night raised €1,200 for the Danii Cancer Charity. Danii Toni (now 18) set up her charity after being diagnosed with Ewing Sar-

coma in 2011. She endured six cycles of chemotherapy, a major back operation to eradicate the source of the primary cancer and a bone marrow transplant. During her treatment, she saw how many families struggled to support children with cancer, and she decided to set up the Danii Children’s Cancer Charity in 2012. It has already raised over €75,000, which has helped families with financial support and purchased vital equipment for the children’s oncology unit at Virgen Del Rocío Hospital, where Danii was treated, while also helping children’s dreams come true on trips of a lifetime. www.costawomen.com / www.daniicharity.com

Star-Studded Premiere in Marbella

One of the highlights of this year’s summer season was the Spanish premiere of the action-packed third instalment of The Expendables film franchise, coproduced and co-written by Sylvester Stallone and co-starring Antonio Banderas. Both Stallone and the Málaga-born Hollywood star were present at the red carpet premiere, held in conjunction with the Starlite Festival in the Marbella Auditorium, where they were joined by fellow cast members Wesley Snipes, Jason Statham and Kellan Lutz. Filmed mostly in Bulgaria, and about a mercenary group known as “The Expendables” (a mix of “old-timers” and newgeneration team members), the film also features an A-list ensemble including Mel Gibson (the main villain), Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kelsey Grammer, as well as Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Ronda Rousey. Starlite Gala

Red Carpet Glamour and Glittering Shows in the Marbella Hills The highlight of Marbella’s summer festive season, the Starlite Festival, concluded in August after a month-long extravaganza of concerts by Spanish and international stars, a diverse programme of cultural and leisure activities, and a touch of Hollywood glamour. Apart from the Spanish premiere of “The Expendables 3” (featured on previous pages) and concerts by such top luminaries as the Beach Boys, Pet Shop Boys, Tom Jones, Kool & The Gang and Julio Iglesias, the main event of the third edition of the festival – held in the natural setting of Marbella’s revamped quarry auditorium La Cantera – was the Starlite Gala hosted by local favourite son Antonio Banderas. VIP guests took to the red carpet to support the gala, which raised funds for organisations that aim to improve the education resources, other needs and quality of life of less privileged communities, families and children around the world. www.starlitefestival.es / www.thestarlitegala.org

Eco Trends >

Globally Green By Alia Babapulle

We are pleased this issue to welcome interior designer Alia Babapulle to the editorial team, as our “Eco Trends” columnist. Over the past 12 years, Alia has been providing clients with innovative and creative designs – creating her own furniture and producing bespoke pieces. She notes that she does not have a “style” but does what the space dictates for her clients.

Eco-friendly, green, sustainable… these are words we increasingly see used these days. It means that people are more and more enlightened as to what can be done to not harm the environment we live in and also to maintain a balance between nature and our necessities of life, especially in design. There are wonderful products and ideas coming onto the market today, and in this section we will be offering an ongoing insight into some of the most intriguing and functional.

Design Lush Based in New York, Design Lush is an up-market interior design group making custom, contemporary, modern and luxury furniture, together with lighting and outdoor furniture. They also have a Green Line, which is shown here in the photos together with an outside view of a client’s house and a bar, also designed for a client. They combine organic materials with technology, making a good fusion of two very different worlds. www.designlush.com

Tiara Furniture & Gazebos When Peter Tian moved to Marbella and decided to set up a new business, he chose the furniture industry as he had many contacts in Indonesia. “The Indonesian wood species is very hard and of excellent quality so I decided that I didn’t want to use new wood but, instead, reclaimed wood offering sustainable furniture from Indonesia using old wood from old bridges from the 17th and 18th centuries and railway sleepers made of iron and teak wood, for example.” Once he had made this decision, he opened a workshop in Bali. The wood species comes from the island of Java and then he takes it to Bali for finishing. Most of the furniture items in his shop are unique pieces. Once the item is sold, there is nothing exactly the same again in the shop. Everything is limited edition. www.tiarafurniture.com (Photo: David Toms) HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Entangled Furnishngs Nancy Reilly began creating this unusual furniture by a circuitous route, much like the curved and twisted vines which are used. She is trained both as a biologist and a registered nurse, but has a strong artistic side. During her many walks in the forests doing field work in biology, she became acutely aware of the magnitude of invasive species in New England, where she lives. In some woodlands there are huge vines of bittersweet girdled trees, growing over their tops in a fierce competition for sun light. The bittersweet is always the victor. Her creative side saw the beauty in those twisted vines and she began to think that there could be a way to remove the vines and turn them into functional art. That moment, 10 years ago, sparked her current work, and she has thoroughly enjoyed this endeavour. www.entangledfurnishings.com

George Scott Studio At George C Scott Studios in Seattle, they seek to create innovative and beautiful art glass, but strive to do it in an environmentally sound way. Much of the raw glass that turns into pieces of art might be trimmings and scrap from a large art glass manufacturer in the Pacific Northwest, which they buy in buckets, or whole sheets of glass that do not meet a producer’s exacting standards for their intended purpose. Because so much of the art glass made is cast (formed of smaller pieces of glass melted together into a larger item), they are able to put this waste to good use as the finished product comes to them as a waste product from another source. They practise this same passion for efficiency with the waste generated in their own studio. Many of their exciting layered and cast slabs are made of trimmings from earlier projects. Rarely is glass thrown away, and they also focus on re-using packing materials when appropriate. The pyramid fixture ceiling lamp is made from post industrial waste supplied by PPG Pittsburg Plate Glass, while the other items shown are also from waste glass. www.georgescottstudios.com

Oden Gallery All of the people who are involved with Oden, situated in Vancouver, believe they are stewards of the earth and are to leave the planet better than when they arrived. They build their pieces using traditional methods and ensure they will last for many generations. There are no toxic products such as MDF or chemical finishes used in any of the pieces made. They represent artisans from Canada and the US. Featured here is the “Ginkgo” table made by Rob Brown. www.odengallery.com

Heart Ethical Heart Ethical is a new textiles and wallpaper company based in New Zealand. Founder and managing director Margot Bawden wanted to create a textiles and wallpaper company that was ethical and eco-friendly, using luxurious natural fibre textiles and the latest in print technology. Heart Ethical goes on to digitally print just the amount of fabric or wallpaper the designer requires for their project. In this way textile waste into the environment is also reduced. The wallpaper bases that clients can choose from are also eco-friendly. All use the latest latex inks, which are more eco-friendly than solvent inks because they are water-based and odourless. They do no emit volatile organic compounds in the printing of the wall covering nor in the wallpaper itself on installation. The papers are also PVC-free, which means they don’t require 1,000 years in a landfill site when it is no longer required. The sand-textured paper is made from special cellulose and textile fibres. It uses up to 30 per cent less ink in the printing process than other comparable digitally printed papers. Furthermore, the company which makes Heart Ethical’s most textured wallpaper, MacTac, has recently been awarded the sustainable development prize awarded by Viscom-Signal’Etiq France. www.heartethical.co.nz

Antosa Isherwood Romantic Renaissance is a Scottish company that has revived the ancient form of enamelling (fusion of glass-on-glass) onto pure crystal glassware. Although born in Scotland, she has spent most of her life in Kenya, and her experiences there have contributed to and influenced her art. Antosa is a qualified ceramicist-artist and has worked in every medium. She is also a published illustrator and author of four children’s books – and delights in creating artwork for children. www.antosadelarose.com

The Litter-Robot is the perfect litter management solution for the cat owner who never wants to scoop a litter box again. Scooping is a dirty job and no one needs to do it if they have a Litter-Robot. Manufactured in the US, the Litter-Robot is described as “the best designed, most durable automatic litter box available”. The Litter-Robot gently sifts the cat litter as opposed to the competitive machines that use a raking method which is prone to clogging and jamming, in addition to becoming an unappealing maintenance task. The Litter-Robot is also said to be the best odour management solution available as a result of its enclosed design and carbon filters. www.litter-robot.com

lunch under a pergola, and evenings chilling out in the garden or on the patio. So this area needs to be comfortable, cosy and convenient, and the furniture and accessories chic and cool. Here we feature some of the latest products and trends on the market: both practical and stylish.

Getting Back to Nature Earthy colours are becoming more popular in modern homes and look fantastic against a white, cream or grey wall. With the whole eco-revolution taking place at the moment, the Earth tone is very contemporary and calming. These kinds of tones are flat and muted and are derived from a colour palette of browns, tans, warm greys and greens. They are representative of natural colours found in soil, moss, stones and trees and come from clay earth pigments such as ochre, umber and sienna. Though earthy colours are generally dark, the living area can be instantly lightened up with a large wall mirror or mirrored table to reflect natural light and make the room feel larger than it is. A crystal lamp or chandelier is also advisable, to add to the look as well as provide some opulence.

Adding a Sparkle of Wall Art

Available at Rimon Collection on the Golden Mile, Marbella… www.collectionrimon.com

Wallpapers with prints of nature such as plants, trees and flowers can look stunning. If you choose wallpaper with a bold print, keep it to just one main wall, leaving the other walls bare to avoid making the room look too busy. Complement the wallpaper colours with cushions that match and some real plants and the room will feel coordinated and fresh.

50

Artwork is very important in living spaces as it gives that extra personal touch. Choosing art for your home can be fun as you can really explore your creative side and enjoy it for many years. Once you have established what kind of artwork you like, you then need to work out how it will fit into the rest of your interior design. The size of the artwork must also be considered, because if it is too large, it can overwhelm a room and if it is too small it can get lost in the room. If the artwork is particularly bold, the room needs to be large and airy. There should be good space around the artwork so that the painting does not appear squashed into a wall space. Also, when choosing a painting, think about how the colours will fit into the room. It is always best to select a couple of prominent colours in your room and look for artwork that has similar colours within it. This will make the painting look like it belongs properly within its surroundings. A painting should be hung so that its centre is at eye level, while a sculpture, depending on its size, can be placed on a pedestal, floor or table.

A Touch of Pizzazz For a luxurious look, perhaps consider adding metallic accessories to give the room a bit of shine and glamour. A metallic sculpture made of copper, silver or brass is an attention-grabber as well as a talking point. Less is most definitely more so a few metallic touches are quite sufficient – make sure you choose well. Living spaces should be free from clutter to calm the mind and give a sensation of space. Also, you may want to consider achieving the regal look, as there are many brands that have recently brought out collections with a modern twist on royal exuberance that is at the same time unostentatious. Deep rich tones such as royal blue, vibrant purple or ivy green topped off with a glitzy chandelier and luxury leather sofas and chairs can really give a living room the wow-factor. The Benefits of Leather A leather sofa is like a fine wine and improves over time, adding sophistication to a room. Years ago, leather was considered a material exclusively available to the rich, but the cost of leather has become much more affordable – while at the same time it has not lost its reputation. Now you can buy leather sofas and chairs in a wide range of colours, making it much more versatile. As leather is a natural material, it adjusts to temperature changes. It breathes, so that makes it cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and it becomes softer with age and even more comfortable.

Go Cultural According to Leatrice Eiseman, director and colour forecaster of the Pantone Colour Institute, “Bringing updated colour into your décor is all about adding that unexpected ‘aha’ with an accent wall or cushions, rugs and other accessories”. So why not try some ethnic colours? As we have become more travelled, ethnic fabrics, prints and upholstery have gained popularity in people’s homes, giving an exotic look that can make a real splash in a plain room. If a piece is authentic and has a story to tell, it can be a real talking point of the room. Cushions, sofas and chairs can all look great with ethnic designs, so long as it is tasteful and not overbearing – as too much can clash and make the room look overcrowded.

Minimalist Living As minimalism is still popular for those who have the need for more simplistic living, monochrome colours have powered through at the same speed. However, it is nice to complement black or grey furniture with a soft pale coloured rug or a delicate lampshade to break up the uniformity and add balance to the room.

Natural materials such as recycled wood and stone are seeping into the living areas, providing a trend-setting and unpretentious look that is timeless. The new trend in vertical gardens, which have suddenly sprung up in many kitchens, terraces and even some living rooms, is testament to our infatuation with wanting to get back to nature.

Merging Interiors with the Outdoors Through Glass As interiors are blending more than ever with the outdoors, windows are becoming extremely important to blur the two areas into one. Floor-to-ceiling patio doors are ideal to maximise on natural light and offer the ultimate panoramic view of your surroundings, whether they are the mountains, the Mediterranean Sea, a golf course or the town centre. Consider your orientation when installing expansive windows as, depending on your lifestyle and requirements, if you are facing westerly (for example) you may not appreciate summer sun blasting through your home in the early evening. Many modern homeowners choose windows without mullions to give completely unobstructed views, while more traditional houses have individual panes of glass to give a more classic look. However your house is designed architecturally, you should try to pick windows that are inkeeping with the overall style of the building and that are also practical for your home life. Glass curtains are an innovation that has become extremely popular on the Costa del Sol and in Gibraltar, allowing you to lounge on your terrace or patio area no matter what the weather while being able to enjoy your full view. Glass curtains are an ideal option for a home as they are made-to-measure and easy to clean, reduce outside noise and add value to your home.

Panorama of Creativity in Paris It is now nearly 20 years since the first Maison & Objet show in Paris. Organised by SAFI, a subsidiary of Ateliers d’Art de France and Reed Expositions France, the pacesetting exhibition is now considered by many as the leading international assembly for professionals in the décor industries. The next exhibition (5-9 September) is once again scheduled to be held in parallel with Paris Design Week in the nine halls of Parc des Expositions-Paris Nord Villepinte, and is accompanied by a new advertising campaign that returns the event to its roots and promotes its development on two new continents. Maison & Objet now comprises four annual shows: Paris in September and January; Maison & Objet Asia, introduced in Singapore in March 2014; and Maison & Objet Americas, scheduled for Miami Beach in May 2015. The four exhibitions share a common objective of uniting the many sectors of home décor, while also offering their own identities. Extending over 250,000 square metres of stands, with 3,000 exhibitors, Maison & Objet Paris remains the most comprehensive, providing “real-time readings of the changes in home décor and lifestyle”. The two annual events are distinguished by alternating special exhibitions: Maison & Objet “projets”, which lends a more architectural dimension to September’s show; and Maison & Objet “éditeurs”, which heightens January’s decorating dynamic. Presented in new scenography orchestrated by architect and designer Philippe Boisselier, this year’s Maison & Objet “projets” is aimed at architects and interior designers who are seeking “rare expertise, custom fittings or finishing solutions that offer differentiation”, while also providing a contract-and hospitality-focused platform throughout Halls 7 and 8, where the “scènes d’intérieur” and “now! design à vivre” shows co-exist. The September show features the theme of “sharing”. The Maison & Objet Observatoire “clicks on the Share icon to track the latest influences impacting original décor and design; the show’s new Inspiration Book explores the “dynamics of creative sharing, pre-paving the future of a caring world”; and a movement examined in Hall 7 features spaces designed by Vincent Grégoire for NellyRodi, Élizabeth Leriche and François Bernard.

These three perspectives on “new uses and values that are reconfiguring ways of living together, exchanging information, goods, services and experiences” have been developed with the objective of resonating with the organisers’ intention of uniting visitors and exhibitors into a global community, connected throughout the year through Maison & Objet shows in Paris, Singapore and Miami Beach, on social networks and via special services offered to Club members. According to the organisers, for Maison & Objet, “’Sharing’ also means the determination to go beyond commercial confines by offering exhibition, presentation and mingling spaces within the show itself, making it easy for visitors to stay connected to – and at – the forefront of creation.” www.maison-objet.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Innovative Design Trends in London Running from 12 to 21 September, the London Design Festival encompasses the UK capital’s major trade shows, offering emerging and established exhibitors from the UK and around the world an opportunity to debut their designs and present their products and innovations to new markets. These “Design Destinations” include 100% Design, Decorex International, designjunction, Focus/14 and Tent London & Super Brands London. Since its inception 12 years ago, the festival has also nurtured an increasing number of “Design Districts”: areas of the city with a concentration of design expertise, retail outlets and creative enterprise. This year there will be six districts: Brompton, Chelsea, Clerkenwell, Islington, Queens Park and Shoreditch. Each of the areas, variously known as quarters, triangles and districts, will organise a programme of exhibitions, events and open studios, as well as retail and community engagement, in addition to late night openings, parties and events on specific days and nights during the festival. www.londondesignfestival.com/design-destinations Interior and design show Decorex International (21-24 September) is marking the 300th anniversary of the Georgians by embracing the era as the theme for this year’s event. Noting that the exhibition is “far from a retrospective”, Decorex is inviting visitors to explore the “many parallels between the Georgians and today’s savvy consumer by embarking on a journey of discovery”. The show’s features and activities during the four days will focus on how the

66

Georgians shaped modern Britain, with highlights including a spectacular entrance in association with the Sir John Soane museum and inspired by Hogarth’s “A Rake’s Progress” series of paintings”. Re-interpreted and curated by leading exhibitors and designers, eight “inspiring and imaginative scenes” will guide visitors into the show. In true Georgian tradition, visitors will also be able to indulge in fine refreshments at the Champagne Bar. The new Syon Park location is known for its fine interiors designed by Georgian architect Robert Adam, and landscaped gardens by Capability Brown. www.decorex.com Described as “the biggest design event in the UK”, the 20th edition of 100% Design returns to Earls Court from September 17 to 20, as the only event during this year’s London Design Festival with a section dedicated to design innovation within the working environment. The show will include a range of leading names exhibiting in 100% Workplace, including a specially commissioned installation – entitled iAlter – by international architecture and design practice NBBJ. According to show director William Knight, “Workplace design is a key area that has seen a growing demand in recent years. This very much reflects the way we work now – an office is no longer just a place where people work, it is also a hub where we exchange ideas and inspire each other.” www.100percentdesign.co.uk

Australian Design Iconic bathrooms, functional chairs… and stunning landscape architecture

Moving away from Europe to the other side of the world, Good Design Australia has chosen the winners of its prestigious annual awards. The overall recipient of the 2014 Good Design Award was Australian bathroom maker Caroma, with industrial designer Marc Newson. The judges said the 22-piece bathroom collection “exemplified how the process of design thinking can be applied to a long-standing everyday product to resolve challenges and issues and reach a beautifully designed outcome. “This a stunning example of an iconic brand taking design seriously and placing it at the core of their business strategy. The outcome is a beautifully resolved design language across the entire suite of products in this range. The outcomes of this design project will extend the brand value of Caroma and reinforce their commitment to original design and cutting edge innovation in what is a very competitive market segment.” The winning entry in the furniture and lighting design category was the Gesture chair. “Our work environment has changed significantly over the years with the introduction of new technologies and tools,” noted the judges. “This is the first time designers have factored these considerations into the product develop-

68

ment process. The outcome is a beautifully resolved and extremely functional office chair.” For architecture and interiors, the judges were most impressed by the Prince Alfred Park & Pool, describing the project as “stunningly resolved design and architecture from one of the most highly acclaimed landscape designers in this country. “This was a beautiful team effort that involved a trusting client in the City of Sydney and a very talented team of designers, architects, communications designers and landscape architects. Every aspect of this park is so beautifully considered. A short stroll through the area and you can quickly see just how popular this park has become and why this team deserves recognition.” Other awards were presented in the categories of sustainability, domestic appliances, consumer electronics, housewares and objects, babies and children, sport and leisure, automotive and transport design, commercial and industrial, medical and scientific, packaging and graphics, digital and online design, and community centred innovation designing for disaster preparedness. www.gooddesignaustralia.com

The Dentists. Interview with Anders Friman

EASING PAIN… AND BRINGING A SMILE TO PEOPLE’S FACES

How did you start out in dentistry? I did work experience at the dental practice where my mother used to go and I found it really interesting so I studied it at university. I graduated as a dentist in 1991 in Sweden. I worked in Stockholm for a few years and then I was head-hunted by a dentist in Germany, where I worked for three years and learned a great deal about cosmetic and functional dentistry. I then was head-hunted again by an American dentist who had a clinic in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where I worked for five years and learned even more about cosmetic dentistry. Whilst working for this American dentist I was given the opportunity to go on many courses at the University of New Orleans in America to learn about the latest techniques in this field. Then in 2005 I decided to open my own clinic here in Sotogrande with my university friend Lotta, who was already living here. How is your team made up? I have an inter-disciplinary team of specialists. I am a cosmetic and emergency dentist but I also have an orthodontist, an oral surgeon, an implantologist and a medical doctor specialising in cosmetic surgery such as Botox and fillers. You might find it surprising that we do some cosmetic surgery but we look after all aspects of the face. Also, if people grind their teeth at night, we can offer Botox in the jaw muscles to relax the jaw. We are a very knowledgeable team and have a nonaggressive approach to dental care, meaning that we are less invasive. We try to remove as little as possible from the natural tooth and instead just take away what is bad and build the tooth back up.

Why should people regularly go to the dentist? Everyone should regularly visit a dentist to keep on top of any decay. Decay is a type of bacteria that makes acid from sugary foods which attacks the enamel in your teeth. We can take X-rays to check for decay when it is just starting. If you get pain from your teeth, this means you have probably left it too late and the bacteria has entered into the tooth and started to attack the nerve, killing the blood vessels and veins in the tooth. The key is to catch things early so that you don’t have to do a big job later on down the line – and to avoid toothache. It is also very important to check the gums. Many people are not aware of periodontitis, which is an inflammation and infection of the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. The tooth is supported and surrounded by very small fibres called the periodontium, which attaches the root of the tooth to the bone. When there is tartar build-up this can attack the periodontium, which will – in drastic cases – lead to the tooth falling out. Having regular cleaning at the dentist reduces tartar and plaque, helping to prevent periodontitis. Is there a connection between cosmetic dental surgery and general dentistry? Yes, there is a very strong connection. If someone has crooked teeth it is likely they could get pain and do not bite correctly. The functionality and aesthetic look of your teeth go hand-in-hand. If the teeth look nice and straight, they will be functional. In cosmetic surgery we check for 67 different factors, from the angle and spacing between the teeth to how the teeth harmonise with the rest of your face.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy? Taking away someone’s pain is very rewarding, which is what we do daily. As much as I enjoy cosmetic surgery, emergency surgery where I can free someone from pain is very gratifying. I also like being able to help someone smile confidently again after perhaps many years of not being able to as they are too embarrassed about their teeth. I love to go on courses as much as possible to learn about the latest developments in cosmetic surgery as this side of dentistry is constantly evolving, which makes my job so interesting. In the autumn I would like to go to Brazil to learn from a pioneering American dentist, Newton Fahl, about new techniques in making ceramic veneers which do not require any grinding down of the natural tooth. Do you ever use silver fillings? We never use silver fillings as they can break the tooth. Often we have people come into our surgery saying they have pain every time they bite into something. Invariably this is cracked tooth syndrome, which is where a silver filling has caused cracks in the tooth due to the filling expanding within the tooth. We see broken teeth nearly every day as a result of silver fillings. The Dentists Galerias Paniagua, Sotogrande Tel. EXCLUSIVE PIECES FOR CLIENTS WITH A SHARED PASSION FOR ART

Photos: David Toms Tell us something about your professional background and why you chose to come to Spain… I fell in love with Spain after a short trip I did in the eighties and then I decided to come back sooner or later to establish my business and my life in this country. After 15 years living here, I haven’t had any regrets at any time, feeling very proud of my decision and happier every day. I find Spain amazing with the different cultures, beautiful weather, good wines and gastronomy and, of course, I find a lot of inspiration in people from Spain. After living in many different parts of Spain, including Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, in the end I discovered that Marbella is one of the best places in the whole world to live. I have been involved in the art business for the last 20 years and I don’t think I could do another thing in my life. Even when times are tough – and selling art can be just as hard if not harder than making art – I keep on working hard and pressing ahead with my business of offering original art works to our clients, because original pieces have a certain energy about them that reproductions and mass-produced decorative items don’t have. You know just by looking at it that another human being made it, and not a machine.

72

What are the basic principles behind your work ethic? I only believe in hard work, and passion in what you do, and luckily I can practise both in my everyday activity. How would you summarise the market at present and how you fit into this market? The facts are that selling art work isn’t easy, even in a healthy economy, and at times like this it can seem downright impossible, but confronting adversity is a fact of life, especially for artists, so we worked out interim agreements with our artists to make our art more affordable. We realise that money isn’t flowing quite as freely as it was in past years, but we also know that people still want to buy art, so we are responding to that. Our goal is to be able to offer clients original and exclusive art pieces at affordable prices for their own personal spaces, ambience and atmospheres, where good taste prevails. Art personalises and humanises the places where we live and work. Art revives lifeless interiors, homes as well as businesses, and transforms them into unique, beautiful and engaging environments.

What do you most enjoy about your work and what is your vision for the company? I am a lucky person being able to deal and share my work with great artists, most of them from Spain; it is a pleasure for me to have long conversations and spend hours with them, exchanging points of view and learning a lot from them. I also feel very proud of a great team of professionals working every day in the workshop, helping at the different fairs we do every year, such as Maison & Objet in Paris, Salone del Mobile in Milan, Ambience Frankfurt and Index Dubai, visiting clients in different parts of Spain, currently being the top company supplying original art works for interior designers, architects, designers and toplevel decoration shops in this country and a great part of Europe, My vision for this company is very positive. Over the last few years of difficulties in the global economy, we kept on growing and working hard, so all I can think of is to keep doing the same and never feel that tough times can stop us doing the right thing. How do you see the future in art? Once you understand and accept the fact that art prices fluctuate according to supply, demand, and economic conditions, that they always have and they always will, your artistic life becomes easier. That is the vision of an art appraiser who’s studied the market for decades and watched prices ebb and flow. You can’t expect your price structure to stay the same or continue to rise when everybody around you has less discretionary capital to spend; and when, what little they have, they will only spend if it’s for a really good reason. So I am ready to lower prices, significantly if necessary, in order to keep my art career alive, and keep on being able to generate income during lean economic times.

Thanks in large part to the internet and art fairs – we are present in many of them – art markets have steadily evolved from local and regional to national and international. So considering the relative health and growth of various economies around the world, as compared with ours, there’s no better time than the present to explore international opportunities for showing and selling art. Artists possess unique talents and abilities to express emotions, arouse feelings, explore sensitive issues and make powerful statements with their art. Rather than viewing tough times as obstacles to career success, consider them opportunities to tap into your creative strengths and reserves, and to expand your sphere of influence. Impact someone else’s life with your art in a meaningful way, and you just might make yourself a sale. What do you think is key to running a successful company in Spain? In my beginnings, starting a business in Spain was like my own personal challenge, and I always took good care to respect the culture, values and traditions. Also, I always tried to be surrounded by well-trained staff, which I think is essential. I am happy to say that a big part of our success is our flexibility and ability to adapt to our clients with their projects, whether they are building a private villa, a complete hotel, an office, a restaurant, etc. Because we specialise in offering unique and exclusive art pieces for decoration projects. Top Dog Groomers. Interview with Rocío Sánchez

WHERE PETS COME FIRST humans or better than humans. Every time I have a pet on my table, I feel I not only need to leave them looking great but make sure their health concerns are addressed. To do this job correctly you must be kind, compassionate and patient. You have to bond; you have to be trusted by them. I am not sure if this is an innate ability but for me it comes down to really caring… they can feel this. Then making sure your costumer’s owners are aware of how they must care for their pets and making sure they are aware of how to keep them healthy. I feel that health and beauty are all part of the grooming profession, health and beauty. In many cases we the groomers are the ones, before anyone else, who detect health issues that need attention. How would you summarise the market at present and how you fit into this market? Fortunately grooming is something that is starting to be taken seriously. The idea of shaving your dog to the skin once a year has long gone for the most part. We share our lives with our pets in a much closer manner than before; we share sofas, even beds. Hygiene has never been more important. Here in Spain there are many professionally groomers but still not enough. When you work with passion and integrity there’s always a market regardless of recessions – at least that has been proven in our case. We work from Fuengirola to Puerto Banús and will not expand further for the time being to make sure our groomers are not overloaded and customers are getting the full attention needed. What do you most enjoy about your work and what is your vision for the company? When a dog comes running to you, jumping into your arms every month, you know you’ve done a great job, and of course the smiles of our customers also. They know when they are not only being groomed but really cared for. Pets give you so much back, it’s truly rewarding.

Tell us something about your professional background and why you decided to work in this industry… I was born in Fuengirola, into a family that have always had pets. Ever since I was a kid I loved caring for my pets. It was my hobby, my passion, and now my way life. Like most kids I enjoyed playing and looking after my pets. When my parents gave me a little Yorkshire Terrier as a reward for doing well at school one year, I made an effort to actually learn more about how to properly care for her. There was not much to go on and I had to teach myself the basics of grooming. I finished my studies, becoming an audiovisual technician, but soon realised that my calling was going to be with pets. I knew I wanted to become a professional groomer. From that point on, everything fell into place. My life revolved around pets. I took a the best professional courses available and attended all the fairs and shows so I could be a major player in my area and be at the forefront of breaking trends and new developments in the industry. What are the basic principles behind your work ethic? I posses a great passion for caring properly for pets. This is not only ethical but it’s the right thing to do; as far as I am concerned they are more human that

74

How do you see the future in dog grooming? Grooming is a very rewarding profession. Nonetheless it’s a profession that’s still not fully understood. I’ll give you an example… One client arrives and wants his Shih Tzu with a Shih Tzu trim ready in 60 minutes. That’s something we are not ready to do. We don’t rush. Never. It’s not only dangerous – it’s irresponsible. Letting an owner understand this is sometimes a challenge. But with patience we educate. I see the future of dog grooming getting better, with more responsible and aware owners. More professional grooming schools that really seek out good candidates for this job. To be a groomer you really need to have a unique predisposition. We will be starting a grooming school in the next few months. What do you think is key to running a successful company on the Costa del Sol? I don’t think there’s anything that is unique about Spain other than the fact that it’s a lot more cosmopolitan. You need to be able to communicate with your customers, in Spanish, English, German, Russian, French. Fortunately, between all of us we manage to do this. For me the fundamentals are always the same: do your best and keep learning to be passionate.

A leading interior design firm based in Marbella, Ambience focuses on residential and commercial projects throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Led by interior designer Andrea Böck, the company’s team of skilled interior designers and project managers “share a strong work ethic, passion for innovative design, and great attention to detail”. As Andrea Böck explains, “When designing a space, we put a lot of care into finding out what our client’s way of living is and what the intent is for the property, if a holiday home, rental home or commercial property. It is crucial

76

to commonly develop and explore the tastes, preferences and functional requirements of our clients in order to create the property that they dream of and desire.” With the majority of Ambience’s clients living abroad, Andrea notes that it’s important to be well-organised, provide quality products and services, and ensure that everything runs smoothly in their absence. “We handle all aspects of the project, from the initial design to refurbishment, sourcing and installation – from the outset until completion.”

The Red Pepper House on Lamu Island in Kenya

Innovative bio-construction project in Marbella… and further afield Environmental charity Arboretum Marbella has announced an ambitious project to build the first building in Marbella and the first classroom in Andalucía made using the principles of bio-construction. This 140 square metre classroom is known as a Domo (dome) and will be made of 100 per cent local and natural materials such as cane, clay, stones and natural fibres. It will be used as an open classroom where they can give courses and educational sessions on environmental issues for nearly 8,000 visitors and school children each year, and be an example of how alternative building methods can be used. The Domo will be made up of 8,200 canes, taking a team of 16 skilled ecological builders two months to finish. It is being constructed by experts CanyaViva, who use cane to build flexible and organic structures that are strong and stable enough to withstand winds, floods and even earthquakes. They combine the structures of bamboo and cane with other natural materials, including various

vegetable fibres and earth, to create many permanent and temporary structures such as porches, gazebos, sculptures and, in this case, a classroom. Benefits of bio-construction: - Uses natural materials - Uses local materials - Half the price of conventional building methods - Sustainable - Minimal carbon footprint in terms of CO2 pollution Arboretum Marbella has already built one bio-construction, an eco-toilet which beautifully displays the possibilities for this building method and is the first part of the DOMO project. There’s massive potential for this building technique on the Costa del Sol to produce stunning, sustainable and useful structures in the garden such as chill out areas, outside bars, children’s play areas and much more.

Boutique Bio-Construction

An example of this technique being taken to the highest level is The Red Pepper House on Lamu Island in Kenya, an exquisite boutique beach hotel that uses bio-construction methods to create spaces which blend with nature and are luxurious as well as eco-friendly. Designed by Spanish architect Urko Sanchez and built by local Swahili artisans, it comprises five beautiful and spacious buildings covered by a Makuti thatched roof and complete with luxurious bedroom and bathroom areas finished in the traditional Swahili manner. Walking to Fulfil a Dream

Arboretum Marbella have cleared the space, collected a huge amount of materials and contracted their building company, with work due to start in spring 2015. However, as a charity they need help to raise the €71,388 needed to complete the project.

Arboretum’s director, Alejandro César Orioli, will be taking part in the Marbella 4Days Walking event between 9 and 12 October and walking 120 kilometres dressed as a tree. Arboretum is asking individuals and companies to sponsor his steps for €0.20 per step in order to raise at least €30,000 to go towards the building project. In total he will take 150,000 steps, which is what separates the dream from the reality. Alejandro explains, “As we trust that many people will help us to make our dream a reality we have named this project the “Domo Confianza” (“Dome of Trust”) and we need your help to make our dream come true!” Arboretum Marbella: www.arboretummarbella.org Domo construction support: www.pasoapasoxarboretum.org; maria@arboretummarbella.org HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

THE P RO P ERTY DOCTOR >

Share… and Share Alike I’ve just returned from a trip to the UK. I’m always amazed at how estate agents operate over there. If I wanted to buy a property in my home city of Bath, I would probably need to contact seven or eight different agents because each of them insists on only showcasing their own exclusive listings. The last time I purchased a property in the UK, I found myself telling nine different agents the same story during a mind-numbing week… over and over. “Yes, I’m buying for investment… yes I want period features… yes I want a view… yes I want two bedrooms”… on and on, the same qualifying questions, and the same responses. Some of the properties I liked, some of the agents I liked, but it felt like I was doing all the leg-work and the agents were just opening the doors. The role of estate agents on the Costa del Sol is very different. We deal with a wide variety of clients, most of whom are international buyers with a limited amount of time here on the ground in which to look at properties and inspect the array of options available. While a UK city may have 10 to 20 prominent estate agents, here on the Costa del Sol there are over 300. The last thing a buyer should have to do is to contact 300 agents in order to get an idea of what’s on offer! We overcome this potential hurdle by operating an MLS (a multi-listing system). Originating in the United States, this system allows agents to list a property as normal, but to showcase that same property with some or all of their neighbouring agents. The advantage to the listing agent is that it drastically improves their prospects of a sale, particularly in a market like the Costa del Sol, where clients originate from a huge variety of sources. For the selling agent, it means that they can access a vast portfolio of stock in an instant, ideal if they want to offer the client an unlimited choice, or if time is running out. Any agent that is not a member of a reputable MLS here on the Coast really needs their head examined. I know some agents who are expert “listers” but don’t have the resources or inclination to market their portfolio to a wider audience. By simply uploading their properties onto the MLS, their marketing is done by other agents. In contrast, there are several excellent “property finders”, agents who spend a fortune on attracting client enquiries and cultivating the client relationship, but are reliant on other agents for the stock that they hope to sell.

By Sean Woolley

Interestingly, it is mainly UK buyers who are suspicious of this system. They are so accustomed to a sole agency arrangement back home that they often contact several agents here in Spain before embarking on a viewing visit... with ALL of them! This can often lead to wasted time and a repetition of work for the client. My advice is to forge a relationship with one agent before making the trip, making sure that the agent has access to all available properties via the MLS. This way, the working relationship and the time you spend with your agent once you are here should prove more productive, and you will ultimately stand a greater chance of finding the property you want. Conversely, if you are a seller, make sure to ask the agent(s) listing your property how they intend to utilise the MLS systems. Some will just upload the property and actually forget to do anything else, while some will be particularly proactive about promoting the benefits of your property to other agents. Sound them out and give your business to the agents who will WORK for their commission. No agent can ever guarantee that they have the buyer for your property. But your buyer is out there somewhere. By using a proactive agent who knows how to best utilise the MLS, you stand the best chance of selling… and buying!

Garden Landscape >

Starting from Scratch By Beatrice S. De Perlac

Get it right from the beginning and take good note of these tips if you are constructing your contemporary garden. Main tip: look for detail in the construction. We are in the 21st century and we want little elements – but well finished. Use a metal separation between your lawn and pebbles or flowerbeds to keep each element in place. White is definitely the colour! White flowers or white pebbles will give your space a fresh and clean ambience. Look for contrast between horizontal and vertical elements or types of leaves – long and round, dark and light green. We want every element to be seen. When choosing your plants look for those that are clean and easy to keep. I also go for the oriental look and choose plants such as papyrus and “giant bonsais” and all types of grasses. My favourite: Ophiopogum nigra. If you have paths or stepping stones look for a way to light them up by installing LED strips under and along the sides. I personally find this is a fabulous solution: you can see them during the day and they give a super effect at night. Adarve Garden Design Studio Tel. (+34) 652 426 851 www.beatriceperlac.com

Travel & Getaways >

After a summer spent savouring the pleasures of Spain, this issue we slip across the border to France for a luxury barge cruise in Burgundy and (on the next pages) a relaxing stay at Alain Ducasse’s Provence inn.

NIVERNAIS CANAL

Blissful Boating in Burgundy France is not to be hurried, so the Luciole fits the bill, ambling along the Nivernais Canal in Burgundy at a rate marginally faster than an escargot. As such the Luciole makes the perfect platform to soak up Burgundy’s charm, food and wine. In a week the Luciole, which means Firefly in French, covers just 45 kilometres, either Auxerre to Clamecy or vice versa, passing through 35 locks. So this is not a voyage to far-flung places, but the canal is 200 years old and retains great character. What’s more, this stubby little hotel barge, known in France as a peniche, will go down in history as a true pioneer, its story beginning in 1966 when a charismatic Englishman called Richard Parsons launched cruising on France’s delightful waterways. In those days the vessel was known as Palinurus, Parson’s company was Continental Waterways and its logo was an inspired piece of artwork showing a chubby chef chasing an escargot. A combination of blissful scenery, superb cuisine and lashings of Parsons’ well chosen “fruity wines” wine wowed the 22 passengers, Word spread, and gradually other vessels were introduced on rivers as well, some carrying up to 50. It was not all plain sailing however, and when one vessel cruising in Alsace got

84

By David Wishart

stuck in reverse gear in peak season the captain’s only option was to spend a month going backwards. Changing times saw a new owner for the Palinurus, which was renamed Luciole, stretched and redesigned with more comfortable, all-suite accommodation, for just 14. But its most popular itinerary was retained – the enchanting Nivernais Canal, not just one of the prettiest stretches of water in France, but enhanced by the Yonne River, a Seine tributary, which occasionally joins the canal and splits off again, and at other times runs parallel. The towpaths, once the preserve of mules which pulled barges, are now popular with cyclists and walkers, with whom we exchange breezy “bonjours!” and waves. Luciole carries good bikes, and passengers frequently ride between the locks, or just go for a walk. One or the other is essential, for eating well is a big feature of a Luciole cruise. What I admired about breakfast was its availability anytime, and always served with bread from a local boulangerie. None of the usual 8 to 10 window after

which you starve. On Luciole it runs till lunchtime, when Mark, the young Scots chef, produces fresh and tasty meals with local cheeses and wines. Dinners, thankfully served in small portions, were equally well received, and once again with more varieties of France’s 300 cheeses, and excellent wines such as Chablis and Morgon. As one bloke from London said, “I feel I am eating for England.” There is also an open bar with some fine bottles to be found on close inspection, such as a Calvados which became my nightly digestif. And so we slept soundly, if not tight, usually in a quiet spot beside a field of Charolais cattle or a hillside of vines. Days had a simple routine. Either we navigated or toured, my ideal being a visit in the morning allowing for a good lunch and a siesta, followed by sitting on the deck watching France go by. Outings began with Luciole’s faithful bus setting course to a winery for a tour then a tasting of several Chablis wines, while on the second day we back-tracked to Auxerre, where we had boarded but on a Sunday when everything was closed. Auxerre, overlooked by a cathedral dating back to medieval times, is popular with families who do much as we do on hire boats, but they have to make their own beds. We encounter them daily, mostly from Le Boat, invariably in a very good-natured way, but as a passenger boat we had priority, and at 37 metres it took up all the space in every lock.

On the third day the target was the chateaux home at Bazoches of Vauban, the great 17th military engineer whose specialty was fortresses, both how to design and attack them. In the French Revolution his remains were scattered, but when his heart was found Napoleon had it placed in Les Invalides. Vezelay and its soaring 12th century abbey was a feast for our cameras, although my picture of the week was a pretty girl selling macaroons from the window of a house on artisan row leading up to the church. She would have fitted in well on the Luciole, whose crew was talented, willing and always smiling, even when the nightly dinner parties called for wine pouring such as that sought by Mad Men’s Roger Sterling, he of the memorable instruction to a barman, “Don’t let me see the bottom of that glass.” INFO FILE Luciole cruises the Nivernais Canal from 12 April to 31 October 31 next year. Its bus picks up and returns passengers to a Paris hotel. There is also free car parking at Auxerre. Prices start at €3,200 per person, which includes meals, all wines and spirits, as well as guided tours. www.bargeluciole.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

LA BASTIDE DE MOUSTIERS

A Haven of Cultivated Conviviality Alain Ducasse was riding his motorcycle on the roads of Provence one day in 1994 when he discovered a house standing in the midst of lavender and olive trees. He was immediately enchanted by the property, which had once belonged to a master ceramist. “I made it my anchoring harbour, my home,” the renowned chef recalled later, “before deciding to open it to others. It has always had this very special place in my heart, and it still has today.” Located in the village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, close to the Gorges du Verdon, the property was transformed into a private home before Ducasse decided to convert it into a country inn.

86

The main building was restored by local artisans, and Ducasse commissioned designer friend Tonia Peyrot to “give the building the special feel that makes it so endearing”. The result of their décor collaboration was the inn’s spacious showpiece Bastidon suite, chic yet traditional, featuring beautifully worked raw materials: wood walls and furniture, stone floor and wall coverings, and a monumental Louis XV-style marble mantelpiece in the living room and Indian “rain forest” marble for the bathroom. The great oak four-poster bed was created by a Japanese designer, and the private garden includes a terrace, fig trees, olive trees, holly oaks, cypresses and the gentle sounds of an old Provençale fountain.

Wanting his inn to be warm and welcoming, and each one of his guests to feel at home, Ducasse shared his passion for the “terroir”, the local land, and personally dedicated himself to its fittings, including small details that give a family house its charm: antiques, picnic baskets and bicycles to help guests discover the region for themselves. Mediterranean “art de vivre” is celebrated at the dining table, with the restaurant holding a Michelin star since 2002. The Provençale cuisine and menus are changed daily, “to follow the seasons and glorify local market products”. Alain Ducasse is known for his love of simple and authentic flavours, and chef Christophe Martin is also committed to exceptional regional food: beauregard lamb, cheese from Banon, truffle from Riez, Cavaillon melon… and Sonaillo, a home-made cocktail that “honours” the Amandine (a local liquor).

Built like an amphitheatre, the village was named after a monastery founded in the fifth century. It became an important pilgrimage site in the 11th century, and today visitors can still see a chain with a silver star suspended high across the valley – a famous ex-voto once owned by a knight who had returned unharmed from the Crusades. Water is plentiful in Moustiers and, combined with the clay soil and nearby woods, this has given birth to a long-standing pottery tradition at the village. In the early 18th century, Joseph Olerys brought polychromy techniques back from Spain, later perfected by numerous artisans. www.bastide-moustiers.com / www.alain-ducasse.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Pacesetting Torque

from Flagship Trident

Described as the “world’s fastest and most fuel efficient diesel sports car”, the Trident Iceni is now available globally in two new models. The Iceni Magna fastback and Iceni Venturer estate, together with the original Iceni model, can reach a top speed of over 305 km/h and have the ability to run for 3,200 kilometres on a single tank of mineral or bio-diesel. The Iceni uses torque multiplication technology to achieve this combination of speed, power and fuel efficiency. According to Trident designer and founder Phil Bevan, using this technology in a road car increases fuel efficiency by up to 20 per cent. Trident has patented a “unique way of utilising torque multipli-

88

cation to improve performance and efficiency”, which has been incorporated into all their sports cars. The British-designed Trident sports cars’ distinctive look features clean curves and an unusual sculpted rear. The cars also incorporate more than 39 bespoke, designed and manufactured components, including independent control of each car seat and oculight roof. The three Iceni sports cars are available to buy globally with prices starting from £96,000 (€120,000), although there is limited availability and a prelaunch waiting list.

Track-Focused Concept from McLaren McLaren showcased its “ultimate track-focused model”, the McLaren P1 GTR (in design concept form) at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. The model was conceived in response to requests from buyers of the road-legal McLaren P1 for a track-focused edition of their car, and is available for pur-

chase only to this group as a fully comprehensive programme to include driving events, training and vehicle support. It will go into production in June 2015 when the 375th and final example of the road car has been completed – two decades after the famous Le Mans 24-Hour win by the legendary McLaren F1 GTR.

Revival of Aston Martin Lagonda Aston Martin has confirmed a bespoke product programme for a new super saloon highlighted by the revival of the historic Lagonda nameplate in a strictly limited series. The luxurious and exclusive super sa-

MOVING PICTURES

A Golden Age of British Motoring

In an initiative of great interest to both motoring enthusiasts and professional researchers, the Motoring Picture Library has added 5,000 images from the National Motor Museum Trust’s Bill Brunell Photographic Collection to its website. Professional photographer Brunell regularly competed in rallies and trials, most famously partnering Victor Bruce in 1926 when they became the first Englishmen to win the Monte Carlo Rally. His daughter, Kitty, also took part in numerous motoring events including the 1929 Monte Carlo Rally, driving a Talbot 14/45 that became known as the Sportsman’s Coupe (she designed the body for the car). Impressed with her driving and design skills Talbot built another car for her for 1930, known as “Kitty II”. According to Motoring Picture Library manager Jon Day, “Brunell’s photography, shot mainly on glass plate in the 1920s and 1930s, is an evocative reminder of the golden age of British motoring, capturing perfectly the mood and spirit of the

90

era. From street and social scenes to events, trials and rallies throughout Great Britain and Europe, Brunell’s images are an important historical record with artistic merit in their own right. “These fantastic images have taken National Motor Museum staff and volunteers over three years to digitise from the original glass plate negative as well as researching the content of each picture. The original negatives have subsequently been re-packaged and archived within the museum collection.” With an archive of over one million photographic images, the Beaulieubased Motoring Picture Library is one of the most comprehensive sources of motoring photographs in the world. Over 24,000 images, including the Brunell collection, are available to purchase online at: www.motoringpicturelibrary.com

and Exquisite Belgian-French Cuisine

Alexandre is an exciting new Belgian restaurant in Monte Biarritz, conveniently located just after the Benahavís exit on the N340 highway going towards Estepona. Highly-acclaimed Belgian chef Alexandre Lambert (who many may recognise from Casamono, Casanis and Macaao Beach Club), together with top Belgian interior designer and maître-d Maurice Israel, created this exceptional restaurant that oozes style and sophistication in a contemporary environment. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited down to enjoy an evening with this innovative duo and their team to try out some of their delectable dishes… As we approached Alexandre we were met by a very attractive gated terrace with long wooden bench-style tables and chairs, a delightful fountain, oversized lamps and an elegant chill-out area made up of pale teak wood furniture pieces. The terrace is well-designed, offering an al fresco dining experience that is chic and at the same time easy-going. Once we had passed through the terrace and started to enter the restaurant, we were immediately struck by the impressive décor. The way Maurice has designed Alexandre is unique but at the same time it makes you feel very much at home. There is an extremely original open kitchen almost in the centre of the restaurant where chef Alexandre, alongside his wife Ana, can be seen meticulously constructing his exquisite dishes. To the left of the kitchen are more bench-style tables that run along the side of a beautiful crushed orange velvet bench seat that spans the whole length of the wall. The velvet gives a really sumptuous

92

look that is counter-balanced by the informal wooden furniture, floors and wall, offering an ambience that is luxurious, relaxed and well thought out. The menu is small and select, with just four or five carefully selected options per course, which are changed at least once a week to offer variety. While visiting Alexandre, we spotted the likes of tempora Gillardeau oysters in fine champagne sauce; a grilled turbot with risotto, king crab, asparagus and truffle oil; lobster and scallops with a lobster bisque cappuccino and coconut milk; and a fresh beef tartare served with fries. Everything looked fresh, extremely well-presented and with good portioned sizes. We also noticed a wide range of wines, originating from all over the world and including a good selection of champagnes and cava. The staff are friendly and helpful and you can see they work well together. There are plans to hold some interesting events such as jazz sessions and cigar nights, so Alexandre will be the new venue to keep your eye on if you want a night that ticks boxes all round! Alexandre is open for dinner every evening, and from October they will also be open for lunch. Alexandre Restaurant Urb. Monte Biarritz, Estepona / Tel. Its centrepieces include a cutting-edge bar, both inside and out, and a newly-reformed “SkyBar” terrace that gives you a bird’s eye view over this exceptional location. Edmunds Cicans, Güey’s Latvian head chef, is a young driven professional who has created nearly all of the dishes himself. Edmunds uses seasonal produce to get the very best out of his ingredients and balances his Mediterranean menu well – with plenty to choose from, suiting a variety of tastes. On our visit, all of the dishes we tried were elegantly put together with explosions of colour, texture and flavour. From salads, soups, sushi, risottos and pastas to fish and meat, there is a broad spectrum of delights to choose from and good-portion sizes. When you dine at Güey you feel instantly relaxed. The staff are warm and friendly and give the impression they really care about their work. The al fresco dining area gives a sense of calmness and serenity as you sit on the elevated decking surrounded by tropical plants illuminated by subtle LED lighting. Somontano Festival

A Sumptuous Marriage of Tapas and Wine

Overall winning tapa... from Las Torres

One of the summer highlights of Spain’s wine tourism industry, this year’s Somontano Festival offered revellers a mix of music, theatre, magic, tapas and tastings. More than 72,000 tapas and the same number of wines were served at the star of the show, the Gastronomic Exhibition, during four days of festivities in an expanded setting bustling with activities both day and night. Other highlights included a gathering of specialist bloggers, which was the third “Trending Topic” in Spain on the Saturday morning, an “Eco-Glass” promotional train and sustainability campaign; and the inaugural “Best Tapas” competition. The main prize was won by the Las Torres restaurant in Huesca, for its “Radiquero cheese with tomato powder and chilli gel”. Second was a tapa of “lamb meat balls with sobrasada (cured pork sausage) honey and potato” presented by Flor de Barbastro restaurant; and joint third, “crème brûlée of white chocolate toasted on a sablé cake base” from Pastelería Iris, and “oxtail cannelloni” from the La Feria restaurant, both in Barbastro. In a vote by members of the public, a “puffed pastry of apple, foie and caramelised Radiquero cheese”, from the Tres Caminos restaurant in El Grado, was named “Most Popular Tapa, and it also took the prize for “Best GlutenFree Tapa”. www.dosomontano.com

Wine Notes > Bodegas Trus in Ribera del Duero

Cooking Critically By Ana Gil Peña

When a friend publishes a book, how do you answer the author’s question, “What did you think of it?” – usually asked before you have got round to reading it. Fortunately no collateral damage to a friendship was caused when Fernando Sánchez-Gómez launched his landmark book, “Cooking Critically”. The original Spanish version, “La Cocina de la Crítica”, has been available in paperback and on Kindle for some time, but the English version is a first in many respects. Fernando’s book has been described as an indispensable reference book, dealing as it does with a subject that has not been written about before in detail. He traces the history of gastronomic journalism since its beginnings in France in the 19th century. This was when restaurants as we know them began to spring up, started predictably by cooks who had found themselves unemployed as a consequence of their employers losing their heads – literally. Restaurant critics started to write about these establishments, and a journalistic speciality was born. Spain caught up two centuries later, again after a period of unrest, in this case the Civil War, and the first restaurant reviews were published in ABC newspaper and written by the Earl of the Andes. This book brings the reader right up to the present day, and contains fascinating material on present-day gastronomic critics and the way restaurant reviews should be put together. The detail is amazing, and it is not surprising it took several years to write. Fernando Sánchez-Gómez has outstanding credentials for the task he has so successfully completed, being – apart from a professional journalist – an

98

expert on food who writes regularly for the Andalucian press from Málaga, where he now lives. His next book, almost ready for the printer, is titled “Arroz con Sabor a Málaga” (“Rice with a Málaga Flavour”), and it cost him not only work but the addition of several kilos, thanks to investigative trips that took him to every rice restaurant in the province. The book will have hundreds of paella recipes, as well as recommended eating places; and, as the organiser of the 2011 World Rice Congress in Valencia, Fernando’s qualifications are impeccable. New Winery Concept

A good book deserves a good sponsor, and Palacios Vinoteca stepped forward when they heard about “Cooking Critically”. An unusual winery setup, only founded in 1999, the concept is new but already winning lots of attention. The main bodega, Trus, in Ribera del Duero (www.bodegastrus.com), is not designed for large-scale production: rather small but highly-crafted red wines. In the same group there is a Rueda, Trillón, Albariño, Sete Bois and the only Rioja bodega making exclusively white wine, Nivarius. Finally, and unpredictably for a winery group, a beer and a bottle-fermented lager – Ceriux and Palax, respectively – complete the stable. Getting Back Into Shape After Summer

AS The robust summer dining and partying is now easing off, many of us have returned to work or our normal nonfestive activities… and the reality of a few kilos here, a bit of a short breath there, is starting to sink in once again. It’s September and that means returning to the gym or to a more diligent fitness regime at home. After a bit of a hiatus or reduced training during summer, the thought of exercising might be a bit daunting for some, so we thought we would ask our fitness and nutrition expert Paul Isaacs for some advice. Here are his Top 10 tips…

1. Most important… consult with your doctor before starting any exercise programme, and ensure everything’s in working order. When you have the green light, find a personal trainer in your area to discuss your needs. Most trainers will provide a free consultation and help you determine your fitness levels, and the correct way to start a programme. 2. Start slowly! Many people returning to exercise after a break make the mistake of doing too much. If you haven’t worked out for a while (or ever!) start with a walking programme of about 20 to 30 minutes three days a week. Add a few minutes each session to progress gradually. 3. Set daily or weekly goals. Long-term goals are admirable, but are so far down the line we often forget why we’re working so hard in the present! For ongoing motivation, write down a daily or weekly goal and reward yourself (see Tip 8) when you achieve it. 4. Document your workouts each day, making notes about what you did, how you felt and how you improved since the last on.

5. Just as you would schedule other appointments in a diary, plan in advance the number of times a week you are going to exercise – and work this around your everyday routine. 6. Ideally, exercise with a friend. This makes the activity more fun and also provides extra motivation. 7. Drink plenty of water. When you exercise you sweat and your body becomes dehydrated. It is absolutely essential to replenish lost fluids during and after exercise. 8. Enjoy a reward. Treat yourself to a massage or new workout clothes when you achieve your goals. 9. Don’t give up. Exercise will be tough some days, but keep sight of your goals and remember all the many health benefits of leading an active lifestyle. 10. Eat regularly and healthily throughout the day. Your body will need to be replenished with fuel after all that hard work. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Vitamin D With Calcium Might Help Prevent Bone Fractures

Taking a daily supplement of vitamin D with calcium, but not vitamin D alone, might offer some protection against the risk of bone fractures in adults age 65 and older, according to an updated review from The Cochrane Library. The researchers evaluated 53 studies with 91,791 individuals to determine whether supplements with vitamin D alone or vitamin D supplements with additional calcium offered the best protection against fractures. Older adults were given vitamin D supplements (including D2 and D3) or vitamin D with calcium or a placebo. The reviewers found that supplements of vitamin D alone were unlikely to lower the risk of hip fractures for older adults. While taking vitamin D supplements with calcium could be beneficial, they cautioned that those with kidney stones, kidney disease, high blood calcium levels or gastrointestinal disease, or who are at risk of heart disease, should talk to their doctor before taking any supplements. I would only suggest calcium and vitamin D for fracture prophylaxis in very high risk populations, such as much older people in institutions such as nursing homes, who get no sunlight exposure at all. Even then, the risk of side effects may outweigh any preventive effect. I would not suggest vitamin D alone,” said lead review author Dr. Alison Avenell, who is with the University of Aberdeen in the UK. Broken bones of the hip, wrist or spine due to osteoporosis or low bone mass affect about 52 million Americans. About one in two women and one in four men aged 50 and older will break a bone due to their declining bone health. Vitamin D has been proven to be essential for maintaining strong bone health. As people age, they tend to get less vitamin D from natural sources such as sunlight or foods such as fish and milk. Potential Restoration of Memory Loss with Brain Implants

Treatments for Alzheimer’s disease are severely lacking. Despite more than three decades of intense research and clinical trials, the only approved agents simply

slow the progression of the disease. No agents have been able to reverse the damage caused by the disease. Now, researchers are taking a completely different approach. They are developing an implantable neural device to restore memory. Brain experts at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in the United States are tinkering with an implantable neural device with the ability to record and stimulate neurons within the brain to help restore memory. The research is built on the understanding that memory is a process in which neurons in certain regions of the brain encode information, store it and retrieve it. Certain types of illnesses and injuries, including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury, disrupt this process and cause memory loss. The device will use real-time recording and closed-loop stimulation of neural tissues to bridge gaps in the injured brain and restore individuals’ ability to form new memories and access previously formed ones. “Currently, there is no effective treatment for memory loss resulting from conditions like traumatic brain injury,” said project leader Satinderpall Pannu, who is the director of the LLNL’s Center for Bioengineering in Livermore (California). “This is a tremendous opportunity.” He said the device would be implanted into the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus, allowing for stimulation and recording from 64 channels located on a pair of high-density electrode arrays. The entorhinal cortex and hippocampus are regions of the brain associated with memory. An external electronic system worn around the ear stores digital information associated with memory storage and retrieval, and provides battery power (see graphic).

The Turner Prize was founded in 1984 to promote discussion of new developments in contemporary British art. Thirty years on, the variety of media used by the four artists shortlisted for this year’s prize “reflects the diversity of work being made in the UK today, often exhibited globally, from film and video to performance, collaborative working and installation”. Artists Duncan Campbell, Ciara Phillips, James Richards and Tris Vonna-Michell were chosen for work that manipulates and appropriates found film footage and online imagery, as well as other work that employs analogue technology, craft and design, with these contrasting approaches “suggesting the impact of the internet, cinema, TV and mobile technologies on a new generation of artists”. According to Penelope Curtis, director of Tate Britain and chair of the jury, “This year’s nominations illustrate the mobility of the contemporary art world, in which works are seen at global biennales and festivals over the course of the year. The four shortlisted artists share a strong international presence and an ability to adapt, restage and reinterpret their own and others’ works, very often working in collaborative social contexts.” The Turner Prize is awarded to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the 12 months preceding 17 April 2014. The Turner Prize 2014 exhibition takes place at Tate Britain from 30 September 2014 to 4 January 2015, and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on 1 December www.tate.org.uk

Impressionistic Surrealism in Marbella

Born in the US and of German descent, Joe Stern spent his formative years on a US army base in Frankfurt before relocating to his home town of Santa Monica in sunny California. After studying medicine at the universities of Heidelberg (Germany) and Berkeley (US), Joe joined the marines as a medical doctor and was stationed in Iraq until he was discharged with a gunshot wound – an experience that would prove to be a major turning point in his life. On arriving home, it became clear that medicine no longer held the same appeal and that he needed an outlet to express his feelings of rage at the horrors he had witnessed during the war. This eventually led to his longstanding and successful career as an artist. Working from a studio in San Pedro de Alcántara, Joe creates highly personal art which could be described as “impressionistic surrealism without any defined lines”.

110

In 2011, Joe met, fell in love with and proposed to German fashion designer and Marbella resident Barbara Weber Lichtenberg. He credits Barbara with raising his spirits and bringing him to a point where he is happy in his life. Joe and Barbara join forces in their latest project to set about creating a “unique brand of art and fashion”. They also have their sights set on opening a brand studio in the south of France, on the Côte d’Azur. However, as a Californian at heart, Joe doesn’t rule out sweeping his bride-to-be off her feet and heading back west to make an impact stateside. Barbara and Joe’s atelier is generally open for appointment only: Calle Toledo 1, San Pedro de Alcántara Tel. (+34) 611 362 986 / 603 651 093 www.bellissimabybarbaraweber.com

New Album Releases Compiled by Alex George

Great music has come from just about every corner of the musical map this year, and 2014 has had some fantastic albums so far. Coldplay with the brilliant “Ghost Stories”, Sam Smith with the illustrious “In the Lonely Hour”, the nowgrown-up Kaiser Chiefs with “Education, Education, Education and War” and the man that can do no wrong in the music industry, Pharrell Williams with “G.I.R.L.”. But as we move into the final third of the year are there still some more great albums to look forward to?

The Script – No Sound Without Silence (Release date: 12 September)

The Kooks – Listen (Release date: 1 September)

What do you do to top sold-out shows, hit singles and multi-platinum albums? If you’re a much-celebrated band from Ireland, you follow it up with more of the same. And if the unveiling of The Script’s first single from their much-anticipated fourth album, “No Sound Without Silence”, is any indication, it looks like more of the same ol’, same ol’... As with their prior top-selling albums – “The Script” (2008), “Science and Faith” (2010) and “#3” (2012) – “No Sound Without Silence” features the trio’s insightful songwriting and rich melodies. And given the proven ability of “Ireland’s biggest band since U2” to scorch the charts with hit singles – including “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” “Breakeven (Falling to Pieces),” “For the First Time” and the five-million-copy-selling “Hall Of Fame” – there’s no reason to believe that The Script won’t mine platinum once again with their latest effort.

Pink Floyd – The Endless River

(Release date: TBC but should be towards the end of October)

The Kooks release their eagerly anticipated new album “Listen” on 1 September on Virgin/EMI. Produced by Luke Pritchard and young hip-hop pioneer Inflo, it showcases a new direction and sound for the multi-platinum-selling UK act. The Kooks have already laid down the gauntlet with swaggering first taster “Down” and second single “Around Town”, released back in June. “To me,” Luke says, “this album is about pure expression. Even the way we made the album felt fresh. Rather than us just being a band in a room, playing our guitars with the vocal over the top, which is what we’d always done before, we were really listening to what was going on around us, picking up ideas. The whole thing was much more natural.” “Listen” is made up of 11 tracks (the Deluxe has 15) with highlights including the street-smart garage rock of “Bad Habit”, the powerful and haunting “See Me Now” and the incandescent joy of “Are We Electric”.

Pink Floyd have officially announced “The Endless River” on their website. According to their announcement, “The Endless River” is “an album of mainly ambient and instrumental music based on the 1993/4 Division Bell sessions which feature David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright”. Roger Waters, who left the band after 1983’s “The Final Cut”, will reportedly not be involved. Unfortunately, that’s about all the information I can gather on this album as they’re keeping things pretty hush hush at the moment.

The Final Word > Specialist Advice

Future Looking Brighter in Spain

By Stephen Tiley

It was a so-so month for the euro (up to mid-August, as I write). The single currency had been steady until recently against the US and Canadian dollars and, of course, the Swiss franc. It picked up half a cent against the British pound and two-thirds of an Australian cent: both of those currencies had to contend with unsatisfactory economic data. The finalised Eurozone purchasing managers’ index readings were okay but they failed to match up to the promise of the provisional figures a week earlier. Among the major Euroland economies – Germany, France, Italy and Spain – all but one of the readings were above the dividing line at 50 which separates growth from contraction. However, two-thirds of them came in lower than expected, and firms in the French services sector reported falling activity for a fourth straight month. There was positive news on factory gate prices and Italian industrial production, both of which unexpectedly went up in June. The 2.4% annual increase in Euroland retail sales also beat the forecast, but there were disappointments. Factory orders in Germany were down and industrial production there grew by much less than expected. France’s trade deficit widened; and Italy’s economy shrank by -0.2% in the second quarter, technically putting the country back into recession. However, in Spain growth was again good and, with the number of people out of work falling again, the future at home is beginning to look a little bit brighter. The European Central Bank decided to keep rates on hold. However, president Mario Draghi recognises that the recovery is weak and fragile – hence the reason for the ECB stating they had measures in place to implement quantitative easing. They will continue to monitor inflation, or rather the lack of it at the moment, before making any decision. Watch out as well for Italy: even though one of the figures was okay the economy is struggling and they also have to find a way to repay around €75 billion to suppliers – and the repayment date has been postponed once. The question is: will the ECB step in with a bailout?

114

Fortunately for the pound, the purchasing managers’ index readings for the construction and services sectors both exceeded the consensus forecast, allowing sterling to recover its earlier losses. But then it had another stumble when the monthly increases in UK industrial and manufacturing production were only half as much as expected. Other news came in the form of new car sales, which were up once again and now are expected to show an annual increase of around 10%, and house prices, which – according to the Halifax Building Society – are now five times the average salary. The Bank of England met and held interest rates at 0.5% for the 65th month, and governor Mark Carney did not indicate when rates would rise. He has a couple of concerns as he believes there are a few signs of deceleration and of course wage rises are not keeping pace with inflation, even though the jobless number continues to fall. One other matter for the UK is the current strength of the pound, which is hurting the price of exports. For the period April to June, 63 quoted UK companies issued profit warnings following adverse currency movement. On the Global Front…

Mixed Signals for Sterling

Stateside the US trade deficit fell in June by 1.2% as exports rose to a record $196 billion, up by 0.1%. This suggests that the economy may be growing quicker than originally thought. The Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have again been reviewing plans submitted by 11 banks that need to ensure sufficient levels of protection and contingency planning is in place in case of a future crisis. Not so encouraging is the fact that they sent all 11 back to the drawing board to revise their plans. Finally the one issue causing concern globally right now is the stand-off between Russia and the Ukraine and the sanctions being imposed on Russia, and by Russia on those that have imposed sanctions on them. If you know what I mean!

It was not so easy for sterling. The pound started August on the defensive after the UK manufacturing sector purchasing managers’ index came in at 55.4, two points lower than investors had bargained for. It was by no means a bad figure: in fact it was the highest in Europe. But for sterling to prosper at the moment only the best will do. And a below-forecast statistic does not qualify as the best.
