Opening evening of Attilio Stocchi’s installation/event “Favilla: To Every Light a Voice”, at the Salone del Mobile in Milan: photo by Alessandro Russotti

FROM THE EDITOR > It was still mid-April, with a bit of a nip in the evening air, and one couple dining at a Costa del Sol restaurant asked the waitress if she could lower the wind-break at the front of the terrace. They were long-time Costa locals, and were “sensibly” attired in light jackets and jeans. Another diner, dressed in shorts, a polo shirt and sandals, protested. “It’s not cold. It’s summer!” He was a friend (from northern Europe), and the banter was in good humour (the blind was lowered), but it did emphasis how those of us who have been here for a while sometimes forget just how remarkable our climate is. In fact, that particular night the temperature had dropped considerably after two weeks of magnificent spring weather – or let’s say “pre-summer”. The perfect time, therefore, to follow up last issue’s feature on outdoor living with an even more comprehensive showcase of latest trends for transforming our homes into a sparkling summer oasis – from sophisticated table settings, cutting-edge barbecues, magical mood-setting lanterns and vibrant rugs to chic sun-loungers, stylish pergolas, bespoke shade sails and contemporary shutters. For a broader insight into other home décor and design ideas that can be adopted throughout the year, we visit this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan to check out some of the innovative and creative products unveiled at the pace-setting fair; while closer to home – and moving into the culinary world – we relish the wonderful aromas and flavours that delighted palates at the Salón de Gourmets in Madrid. Back home, remaining with the gastronomic theme, we taste “the world’s most exclusive olive oil”, enjoy some luscious wines emerging from the barrels of a family-run Spanish bodega, and discover exquisite delicacies at two Marbella dining establishments. For those contemplating a summer getaway, we admire the vintage glamour of Al Andalus, one of Spanish rail company Renfe’s showpiece “tourist trains”, which this year criss-crosses Spain from Andalucía and Extremadura to San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela; and for the more adventurous head across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, and specifically Marrakech, for a luxury stay at the serenely beautiful La Sultana hotel. Wherever you spend your summer days this year – be it relaxing with family around the home pool, chilling out with friends at a beach club by the sea or enjoying some exotic pampering with your partner at a cool boutique hotel – we hope you are able to savour these special moments in appropriately elegant style. And shorts and open footwear should be fine – at least until autumn.

When choosing your tableware, check that all items will fit into your cupboards and dishwasher. Also, it is always wise to check if the collection is going to be discontinued soon so that, when items get chipped or broken, you know you can buy more to replace them.

Rolling Out The Carpet This Summer Don’t forget about your floors this summer, whether it is inside your home or outside. A room can be very easily revamped with the simple addition of a rug or mat. Placing a rug under a dining table and chairs, bed or sofa can complete the look of a living space, adding another dimension to the design of the room. On an outside terrace, a rug gives the area a more textured and homely feel, allowing you to give more design expression to an otherwise plain floor. Rugs come in an infinite number of designs, so there is something for everyone’s taste.

Relaxing Into Summer… This summer, kick back in style. Sun-loungers are becoming more chic and also more comfortable. In recent years designers have chosen durable lightweight materials for their sun-loungers, with smoother reclining functionality than ever before. They have tended to steer away from bright colours and have instead gone for practical brown or beige tones that blend seamlessly into their environment.

The simple lines of the Saler collection by Gandia Blasco convey comfort and serenity. Structurally made of lacquered aluminium, this range is very hard-wearing with sailcloth upholstery that perfectly withstands bad weather. Available at www.gandiablasco.com

Barbecue Heaven It’s that time again when al fresco dining is very much on the menu. Investing in a good barbecue improves your cooking experience, allowing you to grill your meat evenly and being easy to maintain and clean. Porcelain-coated charcoal barbecues are very durable and offer excellent heat resistance, with less likelihood of getting scratches. It is also worth considering a barbecue with a hood as it is more versa-

tile and heat can be better controlled, cooking food evenly. Ideally, a gas barbecue should have a minimum of three burners with a large grill space and a griddle for smaller pieces of food. Though charcoal barbecues give an authentic barbecue taste and are extremely economical to run, gas barbecues allow you to cook almost immediately and give you the ability to control the temperature more effectively.

The MasterTouch GBS 57-centimetre barbecue by Weber is based on the original 1952 classic kettle and offers authentic charcoal grilling. It is easy to maintain, with the GBS grate allowing you to grill pretty much anything you like. Available at www.weber.com

The Wall

Wallpaper gives you flexibility to create your own personal ambience, livening up an otherwise plain room or simply a room with less than perfect walls. With the new collections out this summer, there are some exciting ranges to choose from, whether you go floral, rustic, hippy or classic‌ there is something for everyone. Experiment with different textured wallpapers and do not be afraid to use bold prints – when you get it right, bright colours and large patterns can give a great effect to a room.

All Sweetness and

Light

Outdoor lighting comes in a wide variety of designs and sizes, from hanging lanterns and wall sconces to pathway lights and standing lamps. They can enhance the look of your home, allowing you to enjoy it beyond the sunlight hours. When buying outdoor lighting, as well as when considering such functional issues as security and aiding vision, consider illumination that will light up the natural beauty of your home. These could include a fountain, a rockery or vegetation, creating a magical ambience in your outdoor spaces. 66

The Green Evolution Maintaining a design balance between nature and the necessities of life By Alia Babapulle

Duffy London: King Arthur Swing Table

People are doing great things with recycled wood and metal, recycled bits of leather from car interiors and old belts, and I am so interested to see all these sometimes boring old things being used and made into interesting, versatile and beautiful design ideas. There is probably nothing on sale today which cannot be turned around and used in another way with imagination. If you have things lying around, use your

imagination and turn them into something special and unique. Even dreaded concrete with its very non eco-friendly sludge has now been transformed into something much less damaging to our planet. See what new technology has brought! I am at present obtaining old wooden pallets and painting them in different vibrant colours, and will use them in my garden – non-toxic paint of course!

We Montage

The London-based We Montage company has come up with a new concept for all your favourite photos. They produce removable wallpaper with your pictures, using eco-solvent and eco-friendly inks. Not only can you have your fondest and best memories captured for you to look at, but you can also take them with you. The idea came from James Oliver Jr. and took off when he thought about how people could always transport their memories with them, instead of photos in frames or on the computer. From there, as so often happens with a thought, it has expanded into a company producing something quite different. www.wemontage.com

Duffy London

Duffy London is the brainchild of Christopher Duffy, who graduated in design from Brighton University and started to make products from his kitchen. The company now produces all of its work in a spacious studio. Duffy London’s designs are ideas-based, combining art and function and playing with the concepts of gravity, geometry and illusion. The innovative and quirky designs spring from the mind of Chris, although he also draws on his talented designers and manufacturers to turn these concepts into quality products. Everything is hand-made to order by skilled craftspeople in the UK, using sustainable wood and other eco-friendly materials and mediums, thus giving the company impeccable eco credentials. The designs produced are fun, and always ensure that the materials used do not harm the planet. The Up Balloon table, the Abyss table and the Wolf Within Shadow Chair are just three perfect examples of the wackiness to be found from this company. www.duffylondon.com

Concrete Canvas

Hilla Shamia

I came across this talented young Israeli purely by chance, as I was looking for new talent and loved her work. Hilla Shamia is a product designer who graduated from Holom University in Israel. After graduating, she opened her own studio concentrating on using natural elements of wood and aluminium and completely new technology. She was striving for the fusion of wood and metal without any joins. The wood comes from local, whole-tree trunks that are then cut to size and put into a mould, which defines the outcome of the piece when fused together with the metal. As this process proceeds, it produces another component, charcoal. The charcoal strip forms a line drawn between the wood and metal, adding drama to the piece. The colours of the silvery blue aluminium and the warmth of the wood are a winning combination. They are beautiful pieces indeed. You can see from the fusion of the metal and wood that they marry perfectly and, as the wood used is being recycled, the studio is doing two things: helping to save the planet and showcasing very interesting design. www.hillashamia.com

Concrete Canvas manufactures two award-winning products: Concrete Canvas® GCCM (Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat) and Concrete Canvas Shelters (CCS). Both products are manufactured at the company’s headquarters near Cardiff, in south Wales, from where it exports to 40 countries around the world. Concrete Canvas GCCM® (CC) is a flexible cement-impregnated fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, water-proof and fire-proof concrete layer, allowing concrete to be used in a completely new way. There is no need for mixing or measuring: the concrete is pre-mixed and cannot be over hydrated, and will set underwater and in seawater. CC is a low-mass, low-carbon, geo-textile technology which uses up to 95 per cent less material than conventional concrete for many applications. It is chemically resistant, has good weathering performance and will not degrade in UV, and has a design life of over 50 years. It can be cut or shaped using hand-tools, and requires a minimal amount of personnel and training to install. It has proven to be easier, faster and cheaper to install than conventional methods, such as poured concrete or shotcrete, and produces less waste. It is available in man-portable rolls, allowing it to be used in remote or difficult-to-access areas such as deep mines, and is also available in three different thicknesses, allowing for a range of uses. In short, CC allows construction and remediation projects in the civil sector to be completed with more efficiency and flexibility and with a lower impact on the environment than traditional concrete solutions. During a time of recession and environmental scrutiny, clients are looking for more cost-effective, environmentally-responsible solutions to their projects. www.concretecanvas.com

Stylish Creativity and Innovation in Milan

Exhibitors and industry visitors to the 54th edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan were reported to have left with a renewed sense of optimism. More than 300,000 people attended the exhibition, with 69 per cent of the high-profile operators travelling from outside Italy. “The data confirms the importance and attractiveness of an event that showcases the very best of Italian and international furnishing”, said Salone del Mobile president Roberto Snaidero. “The companies are delighted with the quality of attendees and the solid business results achieved over the six days of the fair, thanks to their own commitment and dedication to tackling and overcoming the tough financial situation of the last few years. The Salone therefore constitutes the first signal of the forecast recovery.” The organisers noted that the presence of Russian operators was reassuring, while China was the leading market and Germany was the second country of provenance for sectoral operators. In addition, a “particularly high” number of visitors came from the Middle East – Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Egypt in particular. Visitor numbers from the US, UK and India were also up. As for the main highlights of this year’s event, the theme of the 18th edition of SaloneSatellite, in which 700 emerging designers under 35 took part, was “Life Planet”; while the Rho Milan Fairgrounds pavilions contained Michele De Lucchi’s huge installation “The Walk”, a circular path through the “labyrinthine meanderings of the workplace”, and architect Dario Curatolo’s installation “IN ITALY”, involving 64 Italian companies and a select group of designers, planners and architects. Attilio Stocchi’s installation/event “Favilla: To Every Light a Voice”, in Milan’s Piazza San Fedele, attracted more than 10,000 visitors; and the Salone was also one of the supporters of the Leonardo da Vinci 1452-1519 exhibition, which opened in April and is described as “the greatest Leonardo exhibition ever held in Italy”.

Stylish Contemporary Villa With Exceptional Views Located in the prestigious Sierra Blanca urbanisation, the Finca San Eduardo villa enjoys spectacular views over northern Morocco, Andalucía’s south-western coastline, Gibraltar and Marbella’s sweeping mountain backdrop. Before its renovation, the house had been built in a typical contemporary Mediterranean style, with little natural light, few open spaces and a poorly arranged garden. The main building materials used were marble, clay, stone and wood. After the charming new owners purchased the property, CPad went about its demolition, essentially leaving just the main structure. They decided on a more contemporary style inspired by modern architecture, and leading Marbella architect Carlos Lamas and eventually transformed the property into a dazzling villa which is bright and airy thanks to large-scale picture windows and expansive glass terraces, and clean straight lines.

82

The interior is laid out over three storeys all connected by a lift in addition to stairs. The upper floor comprises the main bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom, with access from each area to a large terrace offering uninterrupted views, plus a water removal system hidden in the flooring. On the lower floor, from the main entrance and long corridor there is a spacious lounge area with large windows and an exit to a covered porch. The living room has a large glass fireplace, and blinds and mosquito-screens on all the windows. The lounge is linked to a huge open kitchen through an enormous hidden sliding door. Also on this floor is an office and two bedrooms, both with en suite bathrooms. All the rooms on this floor have direct access to the garden. In the basement there is a large hall with access to various areas including a gymnasium that is not only fitted with the usual equipment but also a tatmi room

for martial arts. In addition, there is a games room, cinema, bodega, service area and large bedroom for guests with a bathroom and dressing room. The basement also has several English patios, which provide natural light and ventilation to the whole floor, as well as direct access to the garden. The whole house has an under-floor water-heated system, as well as heating and air-conditioning, an audio system independently connected to each part of the house and a cutting-edge lighting ensemble. All of these facilities are controlled by a modern domotic home automation system. Outside, CPad changed the surfaces of the traditional cladding with plain black slate tiles, creating a more modern look. As previously mentioned they designed a watercollection system hidden in guttering that forms part of the actual ledge, in the process adding a decorative touch to the façade with sunken areas and volumetric contrasts and re-cladding it with bricks and stone details in the form of a fireplace. Access to the villa comprises two entrances for cars and one for people, constructed in wood, as well as masonry walls and side-paths, and lighting and lines embedded into the sides of the three access doors, to distinguish them from each other, with a special touch. For the main access to the villa they created a large new concrete sheeting platform which is connected to the garden on both sides of the house. The garden has been completely levelled and redesigned with new plants, trees and shapes, creating an open and spectacular space. For the backyard garden

they created a new design for the heated pool, adding a bubble bed and an underwater viewing bench, equipped with a counter-current jet, an LED lighting system integrated into the steps and walls, and a blanket of water using a modern, intelligent honmiosis system to maintain the water temperature and make it safe for the home owners. They also added a wooden solarium and re-coated it with white microcement – which gives the pool a similar appearance to that of pristine waters in a beach paradise – and built a new, well-equipped chill-out chiringuito, with a spectacular roof of African reed. To finish it all in style, in the lower part of the garden – at its lowest level – they created a real vegetable garden, with fruit trees of different species, leafy vegetables, etc. In short, a dream villa for clients who are blessed with even more impressive characteristics than the actual house! As always, CPad says it was a great honour to be able to create and carry out these dream improvements, with absolute attention to detail. CPAD Group Pol. Nezha Kanouni has been working in the interior design business for over 15 years. Two years ago she started working under her own name and this was when her success grew beyond all expectations. The evolution of her business confirmed that her own personal style, which focuses on functionality and comfort whilst optimising on natural light wherever she can, is what people really want in modern day living. Nezha likes to combine made-to-measure unique furniture pieces with top international brands using the latest trends in colours and fabrics – which is extremely popular amongst her large international clientele. This beautiful new contemporary villa was a perfect setting for Nezha Kanouni and her team to imprint her distinctive design and flair. The villa was partly furnished with Nezha’s own in-house brand, Benka, which comprises solid uncarved wood top dining tables, a coffee table with an iron frame structure and consoles, as well as the “LoVe” sculpture situated on the main terrace.. You will always find in Nezha’s work her trademark ethnic touches, which subtly appear in her designs. Spanish Flair for Iconic Pavilion Project

Serpentine Pavilion designed by SelgasCano 2015 External indicative CGI © Steven Kevin Howson / SelgasCano

Over the past 15 years the Serpentine Pavilion in London has promoted architectural experimentation by presenting inspirational temporary structures designed by some of the world’s leading architects. The summer landmark has since become one of the most visited architectural and design exhibitions in the world. The annual brief is “to design a flexible, multi-purposes social space with a café that is open to all throughout the summer”. For 2015, Serpentine Galleries commissioned Spanish architects SelgasCano to design the 15th Serpentine Pavilion in Kensington Gardens. The first Spaniards to receive the honour (it is the studio’s first new structure in the UK, in keeping with the scheme’s criteria), José Selgas and Lucía Cano formed their practice in 1998 in Madrid. Announcing the commission, Serpentine Galleries director Julia Peyton-Jones and co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist said, “SelgasCano are architects for our time who offer a tantalising vision of the future. Their innovative use of materials, bold application of colour, informed by playfulness, and a passion for nature ensures (the) Pavilion will be very exciting.”

Investing in Marbella Property Does It Make Sense?

By Sean Woolley

As the Costa del Sol property market continues its recovery, we are not only seeing buyers in search of the perfect holiday home or permanent base in the sun, but increasingly larger numbers of clients are now looking to the housing market here with a pure investment focus. Broadly speaking, other than those solely interested in purchasing a new home for their own enjoyment, buyers can be placed into three main categories: PART-LIFESTYLE/PART-RENTAL INVESTMENT

These clients continue to make up a large proportion of overseas buyers here on the Costa del Sol. Many of these purchasers intend to use their second home in the sun for vacations throughout the year, primarily to escape the colder northern European climes, but hope to rent the property to holidaymakers dur-

88

ing the high-season summer months to capitalise on the investment potential of their property. This is a strategy that many of our clients use successfully, with most of them able to pay all of their maintenance fees and bills for the whole year simply by renting their properties for eight weeks during July and August. How to do it: Most properties will rent successfully to holidaymakers in the summer season if they are priced correctly. Make sure your property is nicely furnished and decorated to a high standard, and that you are able to offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and satellite TV to your guests. Watch out for: High monthly community fees can eat into your profits. You still need to pay for these yourself, plus your electricity and water bills. Make sure you take these into account when you are doing your sums.

MAY JUNE 5

Property Doctor HL39.indd 88

30/04/15 11:58

PURE RENTAL INVESTMENT

Some clients choose to buy their property on the Costa del Sol with the sole intention of capitalising on the year-round rental market, be it the short-term holiday market or the long-term rental market where tenants sign up to a longer contract, say for 11 months. Both of these options can be lucrative, but you need to tread with care. Firstly, being successful in the holiday rental market takes hard work and perseverance. The same rules apply. Make sure your property is well-presented and offers holiday-makers all the mod-cons. Moreover, make sure your property is well-located for winter holiday rentals. Many people make the mistake of buying on a golf course, thinking that golfers will rent their properties in the winter season. This is not wholly true. Most golfers will play three or four different courses during a week’s break, but the last place they want to be in the evenings is stuck on a golf course! Generally speaking, if you can walk to amenities, such as bars, shops and restaurants, then your property will appeal to a broader client base. For those purchasers seeking to attract a long-term rental client, the general rule of thumb is that you can expect to receive a monthly rent which is equivalent to the weekly rent you can expect from the same property in the high-season when rented to holidaymakers. How to do it: Speak to a reputable letting agent about how best to present your property and research the existing market thoroughly to steal a march on the competition. Watch out for: Again, high monthly community fees can really have a nega-

tive impact on yields, although long-term tenants pay their own utility bills. Make sure your contract with them is water-tight to avoid problems with sitting tenants. OFF-PLAN SPECULATIVE INVESTMENT

This is an interesting one, and is only suggested for seasoned investors. A great way of making money in a rising, in-demand market: clients reserve a property on an off-plan development, ready in say two years time. They normally pay around 30 per cent (plus IVA/VAT) of the purchase price as a deposit, and by securing the best-located units at the most competitive price they can then capitalise on price rises during the course of the construction. For example, if you reserve a property priced at €200,000, and at completion the property has risen in value by 20 per cent, the increase in price would equate to €40,000, while the client has invested only 30 per cent plus IVA/VAT (€72,600). If they can find a buyer for their property prior to completion, the client can potentially make a very handsome return on their initial 30 per cent investment without having to pay a penny more to the developer. How to do it: Make sure you invest at the lowest price and secure the best unit(s). These are the ones that will still be attractive when the project reaches completion. Watch out for: Make sure the paperwork allows you to re-assign the contract prior to completion. Most developers don’t allow it or they charge a fee for doing so. In the event of a worst-case scenario, make sure you have sufficient funds to complete the transaction.

The Culinary Use of Flowers

By Beatrice S. De Perlac

Have you ever been to a restaurant where they serve beautiful salad garnishes adorned with flowers? Though you might be hesitant at first – as you have never tried them before and wonder if they should be left on the side of the plate – you will find that they are delicious as well as beautiful. The culinary use of flowers dates back thousands of years to the Chinese, Greek and Romans. Many cultures use flowers in their traditional cooking — think of squash blossoms in Italian food and rose petals in Indian food. Adding flowers to your food can be a nice way to add colour, flavour and a little whimsy. Some are spicy and some herbaceous, while others are floral and fragrant. The range is surprising. It’s not uncommon to see flower petals used in salads and teas, and as garnish for desserts, but they inspire creative uses as well. Roll spicy ones (such as chive blossoms) into handmade pasta dough, incorporate floral ones into homemade ice cream, pickle flower buds (like nasturtium) to make ersatz capers, or use them to make a floral simple syrup for use in lemonade or cocktails. So many possibilities… As lovely as eating flowers can be, it can also be a little… deadly! Not to scare you off or anything. Follow these tips for eating flowers safely: • Eat flowers you know to be consumable — if you are uncertain, consult a reference book on edible flowers and plants.

90

• Eat flowers you have grown yourself, or know to be safe for consumption. Flowers from the florist or nursery have probably been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. • Do not eat roadside flowers or those picked in public parks. Both may have been treated with pesticide or herbicide, and roadside flowers could be polluted by car exhaust. • Eat only the petals, and remove pistils and stamens before eating. • If you suffer from allergies, introduce edible flowers gradually, as they may exacerbate allergies. • To keep flowers fresh, place them on moist paper towels and refrigerate in an airtight container. Some will last up to 10 days this way. Ice water can revitalise limp flowers. Some of our favourites include pea flowers, which are crunchy and sweet; broccoli flowers, which are delicious in stir fries and salads; and of course courgette flowers, which can be stuffed to make a meal in their own right. Creating a Bespoke Style By Juan Pedro Sacedón from Doubleview

In our Doubleview studio, the gardens are like haute couture made-to-measure clothes. It is at the moment and point of creation where fashion trends and design come together. The landscape gardener and the client create a new and individual style through various consultations and ongoing feedback between the two parties. In Marbella I have had the opportunity to participate in projects with clients from a number of different countries, including Denmark, The UK, Pakistan, Serbia and Finland. At the moment, trends seem to filter from such worldwide capitals as London, Paris, New York and Dubai. You will notice in the photos of our latest designs that the French have influenced us for vertical gardens. At the Chelsea Garden Show, England showcases the best

92

private gardens, while Asia, Iran and Pakistan have the most admirable orchards. Spanish and Arab creators combine their influences to develop a completely new design from their respective origins. For project development, we work with an expert in lighting, an electrician and an interior designer who uses many major brands. We also work with specialists in soils and natural materials, so we offer an all-round service. Our showroom is in the new Marmorin Design Centre opposite the Marbella Club, where you can see examples of our work. Tel. (+34) 655 377 601 / www.facebook.com/jppaisajismo

Transforming Dreams Into High-Quality Homes Jensen Store. Interview with Stefan Lovén Photo: Peter Staes

Tell us more about the history of Jensen… Jensen started out nearly 70 years ago and has now become one of the leading bed producers from Scandinavia. We have always produced mattresses at our factory in Svelvik, which is situated on the Oslo Fjord coast in Norway. The technology has evolved tremendously over this time and the company has expanded so much that now Jensen can be found all over the world – producing more than 150,000 mattresses a year. To enjoy the perfect night’s sleep, what does the Jensen Store offer? Jensen knows that an ideal bed should give you good support for your back whilst your hips and shoulders sink into the mattress. A Jensen bed offers the correct support in each of these zones of your body and can be adapted depending on your requirements thanks to our wide range of springs, which come in varying tensions. We help you select the right tension based on your specific height, weight and personal preference. Also, we recently brought out the Exact Comfort Adjustment, which is a remote handset that controls the firmness of your mattress, ensuring that you always obtain a superlative night’s sleep. In addition, we now have a new iPhone app called MySleep that tracks your sleeping patterns, wakes you up to your favourite music and gives you the news and weather forecast for the

94

day. Another app we have developed, Adjustable Sleep, allows you to adjust a Jensen bed to your specific requirements. You have also recently added a new development to the Jensen website… You can build the bed of your dreams through our website. There is an area on our site called Build A Bed 2.0 where you can choose every part of your bed to suit your needs. Once you have created the bed, you can print out the design and specifications and show us your idea at our store. How important to Jensen’s business philosophy is a commitment to environmentally friendly production? We always aim to manufacture products that are good for our health and the environment, which is why our mattresses are licensed by the official Nordic eco-label, Nordic Swan. We are very proud of this license, as there is a very strict qualifying criteria. Jensen Store Polígono Nueva Campana 23, Nueva Andalucía, Marbella Tel. All-Round Design and Construction… in Constant Evolution Concept Building. Interview with Danny Robertson Photos: David Toms Tell us about the origins of Concept Building… Steve Eggenton and I set up Concept Building in 2002. When Steve arrived on the Coast he soon established himself as a successful and well-respected building contractor, while I was very experienced in working with tiles, marble and natural stone products. As we both had plenty of hands-on experience in the building industry and were used to managing our own projects, it made sense to start up a building company of our own, combining our expertise and mutual work ethic. As far as the latter is concerned, our objective is to carry out quality work and instil trust in our clients, which then leads to other recommendations. We have taken care to build our own future, and have always understood the importance of providing and only using quality materials.

96

MAY JUNE 5

What are the main building products that you offer? We have become known primarily for the construction side of our business, but we have also been importing natural stone. Due to our wide knowledge of stone, we source our own products from different parts of the world and stock it here in our showroom, together with a huge selection of ceramic and natural stone tiles, mosaics, eco-friendly composite decking and plaques for manufacturing furniture. In what ways would you say that Concept Building stands out from other construction companies? Throughout the recession, we proudly managed to expand our team, services and premises, positioning us as one of the Coast’s leading construction companies.

We have an enormous amount of stock available in our huge showroom, meaning that – unlike the case with many other building companies – our clients do not have to wait a long time for materials to arrive before they can start their project. Our services are completely bespoke for each individual client, so everything fits to size. In our factory we manufacture aluminium windows and doors, cut stone and wood decking. Our services stretch right across a broad spectrum, from swimming pool reforms, design and installation of kitchens and bathrooms, plumbing and electrical work and construction of patios and terraces to an in-house interior design service. We essentially have the ability to offer a complete range of home design products and services to any customer, and the beauty of it is that the customer only needs to come to one place.

What do you enjoy most about your work? Steve and I thrive on our work, as it is our genuine interest. We are very proud of what we have achieved and constantly re-invest in the business to ensure there is always ongoing development. By doing this, we feel we can offer the best service possible to our customers – providing them with as many options as possible – and this is what gives us a great deal of job satisfaction. Palatial Splendour on Rails

Combining timeless sophistication and contemporary comforts, luxury train journeys are for many inveterate travellers the only way to enjoy a truly tranquil, stress-free holiday break. With airport security measures becoming increasingly onerous, traffic congestion on the roads causing extreme exasperation during peak seasons and most cruise ships packed with enough people to inhabit a small city-state, the lure of a leisurely expedition chugging through the countryside while enjoying silver-plated service is particularly appealing. 100

30/04/15 12:13

From the Trans-Siberian and Orient Express in the Northern Hemisphere to the Indian Pacific and Pride of Africa in the south – and many memorable journeys in between – the world is criss-crossed every year by stately hotels on wheels that offer travellers old-world refinement and memorable views. One key station on this global route is Spain, enhanced by its attraction as a country of splendidly diverse contrasts, and powered along by two showpieces of the Renfe fleet: the Al Andalus and the Transcantábrico. The national rail company’s tourist train schedule for 2015 was unveiled during an exclusive press trip on the Al Andalus from Madrid to Aranjuez, located in the southern part of the Madrid region and one of the Crown of Spain’s “Royal Estates” since the mid-16th century. Home & Lifestyle travelled to and from the Spanish capital on the high-speed AVE: a journey of less than two and half hours each way, and (at least on this occasion, thanks to Renfe’s hospitality) enjoyed in the comfort of the train’s “Club” and “Preferente” classes (to Madrid and return, respectively). After boarding the Al Andalus at Madrid’s Railway Museum (well worth a visit on its own merits), and popping the first champagne corks while admiring the vintage glamour of a décor featuring sumptuous mahogany wood and fine marquetry, we gently rattled our way to Aranjuez 40 kilometres away. Here the Renfe team outlined the various options for tourist train travel this year, and invited us to savour a taste of the five-star cuisine that travellers enjoy: Asturian cheese assortment with quince and nuts; lobster, monkfish and Raf tomato salad with fresh cottage cheese and oregano oil; duck confit with textured apple salad; and fried milk with vanilla sauce and red fruits ice-cream. Bearing in mind they had to serve 60 people simultaneously (the usual number of passengers) and journalists can become notoriously cantankerous when hungry (and thirsty), the service was impeccably timed and exquisitely amiable, and the food was of the highest quality and preparation.

AND SO TO THE BUSINESS AT HAND… The Al Andalus is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015, although the actual train dates to the 1920s, when members of the British royal family were among its illustrious passengers travelling from Calais to the French Riviera. This milestone is being celebrated with an expanded schedule of travel itineraries and options, highlighted by the classic trip through Andalucía’s provinces (six days/five nights), a three-day route from Granada to Sevilla (with visits to Úbeda, Baeza and Córdoba) and four days from Sevilla to Granada (with stops at Jerez, Cádiz and Ronda). At the end of spring, the Al Andalus will also complete a route around Extremadura, before heading north for a five-day journey in July between León and La Coruña, covering famous landmarks on the Camino de Santiago and including a visit to Santiago de Compostela. The Transcantábrico was the first tourist rail route created in Spain over 30 years ago, although the train is more modern than the Al Andalus – albeit just as grandly appointed. This year there will be two distinctive itineraries: one between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela via the Cornisa Cantábrica (“Green Spain”); and the other from León to Santiago. In order to adapt these routes to clients’ varying requirements – i.e. shorter and less expensive – the options range from eight days and seven nights to three days and two nights, available until October (the first trips were in March). In addition to the Al Andalus and the Transcantábrico, Renfe offers two other tourist train journeys: the La Robla Express, two four-day and three-night routes between León and Bilbao (spring and summer) and between Bilbao and Oviedo (summer); and the Peregrino, four summer journeys from Madrid to Galicia (five days and four nights). Trip File • Slightly more than half of Renfe’s Transcantábrico and Al Andalus passengers are from overseas, mainly Germany (23%), United States (14%), UK (12%), Australia (10%), Switzerland (6%) and Brazil (4%). • Renfe’s passenger services are divided into long (AVE), medium (regional on AVE or conventional-width Avian) and short distance (Cercanías). • Opened in 1971, when limited demand and technology meant it was only built from Málaga to Fuengirola, the Costa del Sol route carries nine million passengers a year. • A study is currently being undertaken to investigate five possible options to expand the route to the western end of the Coast. • Projects are also earmarked to improve access (with lifts) at the Torremolinos and Los Boliches stations. • Within Andalucía passengers can currently travel on the high-speed AVE from Málaga to Córdoba, and Córdoba to Sevilla. Work on a bypass around Antequera, and 20 kilometres of new railway line near Lorca, is currently being completed to provide an AVE link between Málaga and Granada (due to be finished by the end of the year). • Other “local” routes include a daily service from Málaga to Ronda (and return), and a train service to El Chorro for those wanting to walk along the recently re-opened Caminito del Rey. www.renfe.com / www.renfe.com/trenesturisticos

Marvellous Marrakech Be inspired by the wonder of the Rose City… with a luxury escape at La Sultana Hotel By Andrew Forbes

Anyone with a passion for design, interiors or the exotic can’t have escaped the allure of Morocco. With its fascinating mix of Arabian, African and European influences, the country makes for a seductive, inspirational destination for the style-conscious nomad. From the sand dunes of the desert to the ancient palaces of the cities, from bohemian to luxury… this is where you can lose yourself in a fantasy world of One Thousand and One Nights.

104

Marrakech, although not the administrative capital of Morocco, is without doubt the nation’s capital of style and glamour. This progressive, fashionable city somehow manages to maintain the balance between its traditional way-oflife and its modern lifestyle of trendy eateries and upscale hotels. Found in the mediaeval Kasbah district, set back down an alleyway which is carefully laid with Berber carpets and decorated with artisan lamps, is a remarkably beautiful hotel; a place not only to be pampered but also to be inspired. For here you find a

myriad of fine Moroccan craftsmanship that can’t help but fire your creativity. Five authentic, historic Riad patio houses have been painstakingly restored and sympathetically brought together to create an intimate five-star hotel. So if you are looking for that authentic Marrakech Riad experience but want to be lost within a five-star luxury enclave, then this is probably the place. Food plays an important role in this magical place – from the rooftop cooking school where you can learn the secrets of the flavourful and colourful Moroccan cuisine, to the acclaimed restaurant that serves gourmet French and imaginative Moroccan dishes. Choose a table around the indoor pool, shaded by exotic palms, or eat under the stars, surrounded by romantic candlelit lamps. For the design conscious, the serene and elegant guest rooms and suites are full of details that please the eye, including classic zellige geometric mosaic tiling, silky smooth tadelakt walls, richly coloured Berber carpets, exquisite fab-

rics and intricately carved plaster ceilings. Each element of the public spaces is also a celebration of craftsmanship, from the evocative arches, marble fountains and intricately carved cedar wood beams to the carefully engraved and crafted metal work and exotic African furniture. The highlight of La Sultana Marrakech is her spacious roof terrace: with areas for sunbathing, including a refreshing plunge pool; tranquil corners for enjoying a mint tea or an evening cocktail; and tables for al fresco dining. Yet more than anything, it’s the view that you remember; yes the classic springtime view of Marrakech, across the medina and the Kasbah rooftops, the city’s ancient terracotta and salmon pink ramparts, out to the distance and the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. www.lasultanahotels.com/eng/marrakech HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Dynamic Refinement Dramatic presentation of new Jaguar XF

Jaguar chose a spectacular stunt to highlight the new XF model’s lightweight aluminium-intensive construction. British stuntman Jim Dowdall – a veteran of Hollywood movies including Bond, Bourne and Indiana Jones – drove the Jaguar 240 metres across a high-wire over the Royal Dock in London’s Canary Wharf (www.jaguar.co.uk/newxf) Later, the XF – which (according to Jaguar) is 80 kilograms lighter than its closest competitor – made its global motor show debut in New York. Described as

106

bringing “an unrivalled blend of refinement, fuel economy, dynamics and design to the business car segment”, the XF’s coupé-like design is formed around Jaguar’s aluminium-intensive architecture and combines Jaguar’s classic proportions, surfaces and pure lines with exceptionally low aerodynamic drag. Featuring 75 per cent aluminium, the architecture enables weight savings of up to 190 kilograms over the outgoing model and an increase in torsional stiffness of up to 28 per cent.

MAY JUNE 5

Open Road HL39.indd 106

30/04/15 12:16

An XF was one of the models on show during a special presentation at the C. De Salamanca luxury car dealership in Marbella to unveil the new Jaguar XE (www.cdesalamanca.com). The XE has also been the “co-star” of a film documenting actor Idris Elba’s 1,200-kilometre road trip from London to Berlin to highlight the sports saloon’s fuel economy credentials.

The architecture also delivers improvements in packaging and proportions. Though seven millimetres shorter and three millimetres lower than the car it replaces, the all-new XF’s 2,960-millimetre wheelbase is 51 millimetres longer, enabling “class-leading” rear seat space with more leg, knee and head room. The efficiency gains are complemented by a powerful engine range. The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel engines are available in 163PS/380Nm and 180PS/430Nm ratings and are offered with specially optimised six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions. In 163PS manual form, the all-new XF delivers 104g/km CO2 – “the lightest, most efficient non-hybrid diesel model in the segment”. All other engines are matched exclusively to eight-speed automatic transmissions. The 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel benefits from a host of advanced technologies that raise output to 300PS and 700Nm of torque; and also available is the 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine with 380PS/450Nm torque. “In creating the all-new XF, as a design team we have been driven by discipline, the discipline of simplicity,” said Jaguar director of design Ian Callum. “Every exterior line on the XF has a clear purpose – nothing is superfluous. Achieving that simplicity takes time and requires great determination; it’s all too easy to add lines to a car, but much harder to add character by leaving lines out. “Inside too, we have been driven by the desire to ensure the XF’s cabin is as comforting as it is comfortable. New technology, including our new 10.2-inch touchscreen, is combined carefully with materials that cosset and reassure. The all-new XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

The foundation of what has become the “new Spanish cuisine” movement was effectively laid during a gastronomy roundtable convened by the Grupo Gourmets in 1976. In subsequent years, Spain’s hotel and restaurant industry worked hard to position the country’s cuisine as one of its key international assets. In 1987, the Salón de Gourmets was founded in Madrid “with the aim of becoming the showcase of food and beverages delicatessen products, in order to promote its differential values: quality, variety and professionalism”. The fair was formally granted “international” status five years later, and in 2007 it was named a full partner of The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI). Today, the Salón is the only international trade fair in Europe specialising in gourmet products, highlighted by Spain’s signature gastronomic products – wines, olive oil, preserves, ham, cheese, confectionery, charcuterie and liquors

– but also including a diverse range of other delicatessen delicacies, such as non-alcoholic drinks, smoked foods, pulses, pasta and caviar. This year’s 29th edition was hailed as demonstrating a “sign of recovery”, after it welcomed 1,422 exhibitors (22.1 per cent more than in 2014, with non-Spanish displays increasing by 50 per cent) displaying 35,000 products. A total of 84,117 industry professionals visited the fair (5.2 per cent up on last year), attracted by the classics in Spanish and international gastronomy, as well as latest product trends. In addition to checking out the exhibits, visitors were able to take part in different 300 activities, including tastings, show cookings, demonstrations, competitions (such as the Spanish oyster shell opening championship) and other special presentations. Barbulla San Pedro

The Bar-Restaurant

That Is Making Some Noise Restaurant review by: Tallulah Bentley-Jenkins

Photos: David Toms As we all know, San Pedro de Alcántara is enjoying a new awakening with recent developments such as the boulevard and the new cultural centre, Centro Cultural Trapiche de Guadaiza. With all eyes on San Pedro at the moment, owners of the chic chill-out bar NH Lounge (on top of the NH Hotel) took the opportunity to open another establishment in the area, and it has already become a hit with the locals. As we would expect from Alberto and Ana, Barbulla has been lovingly put together with their own personal touches. Though Barbulla is a casual establishment, the attention to detail is second-to-none. They cater for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks such as beers, wines, cocktails and liquors, making it an ideal place for any time of the day.

110

The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. For breakfast, as well as lighter options such as muesli, toast and bagels, you can indulge yourself in an eggs Benedict for just €6.50, American pancakes or an English breakfast with all the trimmings for under seven euros. During the day, as well as interesting salads and sandwiches, they have creative tapas and “raciones” such as crispy squid hotdog with alioli, king prawn tempura with a side dish of truffle oil, and tasty croquettes. If you are a little hungrier, there are larger dishes including a tortilla with traditional Mexican slow-roasted pork with salsa verde, and Santa Rosalia ox burger with truffle oil, Idiazabal cheese, pickle, bacon, onion, lettuce and tomato. Treat yourself to some of their homemade desserts – their banoffee pie is to die for!

The decoration could be described as rustic chic. Barbulla has a very organic feel about it, with tables made from reclaimed wood, shelves built using with wooden crates and an exposed brick wall (where you will find Lego placed in the cracks). For those who like to be sitting out in the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, there are high bench tables and chairs at the front of Barbulla. Inside, there is a long bar where the main seating area is, with a large variety of drinks, and at the rear a show-cooking area where they are holding cookery courses and wine tasting events. You can find out about their events on their Facebook page. Barbulla San Pedro Avenida de Las Palmeras 7, San Pedro de Alcántara Tel. SEA GRILL RESTAURANT

Exquisite Fine Dining by the Mediterranean

Photo: Peter Staes Enjoying a magnificent beachfront setting, the Sea Grill restaurant is part of the luxurious Puente Romano Beach Resort. As soon as you enter the bright ambience of the restaurant, with views out over the sea, and are welcomed by the friendly staff, you know you have found the perfect place for an outstanding Mediterranean lunch or dinner. Unfortunately for us, it wasn’t a particularly sunny day, but the interior of the Sea Grill is so well-lit, and has such a pleasant atmosphere, it almost feels like summer inside. When the sun did come out, the contemporary white, raised roof structure, built by Cape Reed, reflected beautiful lighting and gave the restaurant a stylish tropical feel.

112

MAY JUNE 5

The Sea Grill restaurant opened three years ago and is still run by head chef Thomas Stork, and sous chef Sergio de la Plata. The staff are not just friendly: they also have a great deal of knowledge about their products and wines, which is exceptional, because there is an enormous variety of the latter. The wine cellar contains around 130 different wines, in all price ranges. You can have an amazing and very well-priced Spanish rosé, La Rosa, for €33; or, for those with a little higher budget, a Petrus A.O.C. Pomerol. We began with a pleasant glass of rosé cava while checking out the menu. This was not easy, as there is so much to choose from. We opted for tuna carpaccio with avocado and a tiger prawn cocktail, spiced up with a sweet and sour sauce.

Then tandoori jumbo Madagascar prawn on a bed of fresh vegetables – a feast for the eyes, with the tenderness of the meat and the Indian spices superb. Every dish is extremely well presented, but even more important... sublimely delicious as well. During the weekends (Friday to Sunday) there is a full buffet for €69, and full means really full. It contains a salad bar with all kinds of salads, including humus, baba ganoush, Russian salad, fresh asparagus, nuts and dried figs to name just a few. There is a good selection of cheeses and a barbecue, but you can also choose any fish or meat dish, which the chefs prepare while you wait. For any occasion, whether you would like to plan your wedding at the Sea Grill or just have a light snack, the experience is certain to be memorable. Silken olive oil…

for refined tastes

When it comes to olive oil, Spain is the unrivalled international market leader. The country produces over 40 per cent of the world’s olive oil, and 75 per cent of that production comes from Andalucía. Now this region – specifically Málaga province – can make another pacesetting global claim: producer of “the world’s most exclusive olive oil”. This exquisite product – limited to 75 bejewelled bottles – was unveiled during a special press presentation at the La Cartuja Vinacoteca in Marbella, where two local entrepreneurs, Francisco Ruiz and Alberto González, offered a fascinating insight into this luxury gastronomic project. Their ultimate plan is for Olivia (“fruit of the olive”) to be the main flag-bearer of a brand comprising several top-quality food products – strategically placed in both national and international outlets. During the Olivia oil tasting in Marbella (co-presented by David Gallardo from Doliva and accompanied by specially baked bread from the Panadería La Artesana de Coín), followed by lunch at the stunningly refurbished 1870 restaurant in San Pedro de Alcántara, they explained that their “visionary” company Northstar Design had been set up in 2004, to create Olivia with “the singular goal of producing the best extra virgin olive oil in the world”.

114

Their philosophy is based on “the epitome of artisanal knowledge handed down over the centuries and integrated into a production process devoted to excellence”. To that end, only olives grown in Mediterranean Spain are used for Olivia’s extra virgin olive oil (specifically, in this case, from an independently-owned farm in the northern part of Málaga province); when ripe, the olives are selected and picked by hand; and 10 experts “dedicate their skill, experience and passion to obsessively checking every phase of the production process”. While normal extra virgin oil contains 0.8 per cent free acidity, Olivia is an incredible 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. It has been produced using 100 per cent Arbequina olive varieties – always from the most recent harvest – with the oil extracted by non-filtration cold-pressing and with minimum handling. The “world’s first true ultra-premium extra virgin olive oil” is encased in a striking frosting crystal vessel glistening with embedded Swarovsky stones that draw the name “Olivia”, and presented in a satin black lacquer and hand-polished case (recommended price: €170). www.oliviaone.com / www.facebook.com/oliviamarbella www.44esencias.com / www.1870.com.es

Wine Notes >

Keeping It In The Family By AJ Linn

Most people think the wine trade is a fun thing to be involved in and, while having to admit it is probably less boring than many businesses, the novelty can soon wear off. Neal Martin’s tweets regularly feature photographs of the wines he has to taste on any given day, and there are mornings when as many as fifty opened bottles are laid out in rows pending his opinion. Neal Martin, by the way, is one of Britain’s leading experts and was recently nominated to take over Burgundy and Bordeaux as part of wine guru Robert Parker’s retirement plan. There are only so many times you can tour a winery without stifling a yawn or three – because they are all the same. At least in “the old days” there were wooden barrels and a horny-handed son of the soil to draw samples from them. Now it’s all stainless steel and white laboratory coats. Nor is it unusual to visit a bodega and ne’er see a barrel, or even a bottle until you get to the tasting room. Which is why what you can loosely refer to as the genuine thing is fun, even though it had been shown to be more of a hit-and-miss method of making wine than stacked butts and earth floors. The Gil Vera family started off like that in the Murcia region of Spain, home of Jumilla wine. As with practically every wine region in Europe, local producers sold their wine at the bodega door to all-comers and didn’t start bottling it and sending it outside their hometowns until much later. And while the Monastrell grape, the trademark variety of this area (Mourvèdre in France), gave wines high in alcohol and dark in colour, Jumilla was an acquired taste, and even now there is still a small body of wine drinkers that turn their noses up at wines from this region. Even Jancis Robinson, arguably another of Britain’s most qualified wine experts, admitted recently she had underestimated the potential of the Monastrell grape until now. While the Tempranillo, Spain’s flagship variety, gives us wines from cooler regions such as the Rioja and Ribera del Duero, Monastrell is a hot-climate grape, and was used previously to add colour and alcohol to weaker wines from other regions. The Gil Vera family must take a large part of the credit for putting Jumilla wines in the quality tables. Although the family had been making wine in Murcia since the early 1900s, it was not until Miguel Gil, who as a budding technocrat had left for Sevilla to train as an aeronautical engineer, returned home to join the family firm that the business took off. The fourth generation is currently in charge and they sell 7.5 million bottles of wine annually. Anxious to spread their influence to all Spain, the original family bodega now forms part of a group that controls eight wineries the length and breadth of the country, from Rías Baixas to Almansa. The striking design of the labels and the markedly progressive approach to marketing sets this bodega apart, but the really winning features are the excellent quality and the reasonable prices. Starting with the Muscatel Seco, an unusually striking dry white that is more luscious than many prize-winning Chardonnays, the price is only €6.40 retail. The remaining four wines are all red Monastrells, the youngest being a four-monther at €6. The 12-month wine is €10.60 and the 18-month €21. No nonsense here about crianzas, reservas and the like. What you see is what you get, the range completed by an organic red, Honoro Vera, at €5.35. These are not supermarket wines, but are easy to find online or direct from the bodega (www.gilfamily.es).

Medical Minutes CUTTING-EDGE ADVICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING By John Schieszer

John Schieszer is an awardwinning journalist and radio broadcaster of “The Medical Minute”. He can be reached at medicalminutes@gmail.com. The consumption of more than four eggs per week did not bring any significant additional benefits. The investigators theorise that eggs contain many beneficial nutrients that can have an effect on glucose metabolism and low-grade inflammation, and thus help prevent the development of type-2 diabetes.

EGGS AND FISH: POTENTIAL BENEFITS FOR ADULTS A few simple dietary changes may benefit you in big ways. New findings show that eating eggs on a regular basis may help prevent the development of type-2 diabetes. Researchers in Finland have found that eating eggs may benefit blood sugar metabolism. In the past, egg consumption has either been associated with an elevated risk of diabetes or no association has been found. The findings from this new study suggest that some compound or combination of compounds in eggs may help combat diabetes through an anti-inflammatory effect. Researchers looked at men in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, which was started at the University of Eastern Finland in 1984-1989. The Finnish researchers examined the dietary habits of 2,332 men between the ages of ages 42 and 60. During a follow-up of 19.3 years, they found that 432 men were diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Interestingly, egg consumption was associated with a lower risk of type-2 diabetes as well as with lower blood glucose levels. Men who ate approximately four eggs per week had a 37 per cent lower risk of type-2 diabetes than men who only ate approximately one egg per week. This association persisted even after physical activity, body mass index (BMI), smoking and consumption of fruits and vegetables were taken into consideration.

VITAMIN D AND PAIN IN OSTEOARTHRITIS PATIENTS If you are overweight and have osteoarthritis, you may want to bone up on your dairy and other products that have vitamin D, according to a University of Florida study. It has found that higher levels of vitamin D may decrease pain and improve function in obese individuals with osteoarthritis. In a study published in The Clinical Journal of Pain, the investigators report that obese individuals who suffer from osteoarthritis and have adequate vitamin D levels could walk, balance and rise from sitting to standing better than obese participants with insufficient vitamin D levels. “Adequate vitamin D may be significant to improving osteoarthritis pain because it affects bone quality and protects cell function to help reduce inflammation,” said lead author Toni Glover, who is an assistant professor in the University of Florida College of Nursing in Gainesville, Florida. “Vitamin D maintains calcium and phosphate concentration levels to keep bones strong. Increased pain due to osteoarthritis could limit physical activity, including outdoor activity, which would lead to both decreased vitamin D levels and increased obesity.” Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of bones wears down over time, causing pain, stiffness and loss of joint movement. The researchers analysed blood samples for vitamin D levels in 256 middle-aged and older adults. Among the 126 obese participants, 68 were vitamin D-deficient while only 29 of the 130 non-obese participants were deficient, suggesting obesity is significantly associated with vitamin D deficiency. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults aged 18-70 obtain 600 international units of vitamin D per day and adults over 71 at least 800 international units of vitamin D per day. An eight-ounce (quarter-litre) glass of fortified milk contains about 100 international units of calcium. Foods rich in vitamin D include salmon, tuna, sardines, shrimp, mushrooms and egg yolks, and foods fortified with vitamin D, such as milk and some cereals, yogurts and orange juices. The body also produces vitamin D through sun exposure.

How To Achieve Your Goals By Rachel Garrod

What’s the difference between a dream and a goal? It’s all in the plan. We all have dreams we are chasing: maybe the way we want to live, a work idea, a health behaviour change, a dreamy partner! Dreams do come true of course, but we are much more likely to achieve our dreams if we see them as goals – and goals need plans. Susan Michie and colleagues have collated a list of evidenced-based techniques that can be used by health professionals to help individuals achieve their goals. In their taxonomy of 2003 they identified 93 different techniques – so there’s something for everyone. One strategy that can be easily implemented is “goalsetting and action planning”. Goal-setting sounds simple, but in reality people often skip the planning stage – and that’s the crucial bit. Imagine we want to lose four kilos in weight. We set the goal and time frame, eight kilos in four weeks, two kilos a month. Simple, off we go. But how often does that work? First of all, we are more likely to achieve positive goals than negative ones, so saying “I will lose eight kilos” would be better phrased as “I will reach my target weight”. It’s a subtle difference but one that has shown positive effects in influencing behaviours such as stopping smoking, weight loss and increasing exercise. Secondly, goal setting involves making a commitment and there is evidence that verbalising that commitment enhances the likelihood of success. Amrhein and colleagues found that when people made statements about their commitment to change behaviour that increased in intensity throughout the therapy, improvements in treatment outcome were observed. Importantly they found that when people came into therapy stating vague commitments such as “I might” make changes – which later they revised to “I will” make changes – the increased commitment was associated with better success.

So if we want something we need to make “an affirmation”. Saying out loud, to yourself or to others, “I will achieve my target weight”, “I will exercise three times a week” or “I will be a non-smoker” will help us believe that we can make the change and improve our chances of doing so. But just saying it out loud won’t make it happen either. We need to plan. Action planning addresses the when, how, where and why of the behaviour. “If… then…” plans are a helpful way of thinking about action planning. For example, someone who dreams of being a non-smoker, but has difficulty not smoking when at social events, might commit to “IF I am in a social place and want a cigarette THEN I will use nicotine gum instead.” In this way the plan helps trigger the desired behaviour. “If… then…” plans can also be used to help overcome obstacles and barriers. Behaviour change is a process; achieving your goal should be seen as a journey. And in all journeys there will be obstacles. “If… then” plans help provide a pathway back to the desired behaviour after a problem. “IF I fail to stick to my diet plan THEN I will revise my motivations.” Or to put it another way, “It’s a lapse – not a collapse!” We all have the skills within us to achieve our dreams. Goal-setting and action planning are two tools in our box of tricks, so why not give it a go. Set your goal and shout it out loud. Luxury Living Around The World: photo by Hans Fonk

A new series of books published by teNeues showcases contrasts in stylish living from urban to countryside settings, as well as Scandinavian-style interiors. A fourth book featuring luxury living around the world has also just been released by the same publisher. Highlighting the fact that urban homes are as varied as the cities themselves, Living in Style City offers an illustrated coffee table tour of properties ranging from a São Paulo apartment to a London townhouse – and a palazzo in Rome to a luxurious house in Beirut. Especially aimed at “busy urbanities…plagued by an insatiable desire to escape the city to the countryside to breath in fresh air, yearning silence and comfort”, Living in Style Country features the interiors of homes that have been influenced by their pristine surroundings of nature, mountains and lakes. These escapes are appointed with natural building materials to maintain an atmosphere ranging

from vintage to cutting-edge modern… from a restored English barn and cosy Provençal and Umbrian cottages to colonial houses on the American coastline. As Living in Style Scandinavia displays in stunning fashion, Nordic interiors “exude a classically modern elegance, boasting both innovation and the highest comfort standards”, with lighting and a deeply rooted connection to nature playing just as much a role in the spaces as intense colours and graphic design. An authoritative reference for designers, homeowners and art collectors over the past two decades, interior design magazine OBJEKT©International has now produced a coffee table book featuring diverse interiors from around the world, while also focusing on the owners and their personal stories. OBJEKT©International founder Hans Fonk is known for photographing and presenting latest developments in design, art, and architecture in a visually appealing manner. www.teneues.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Charity Auction in Aid of African Project The Timeless Gallery in Puerto Banús held a charity art auction in association with the Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina to support the Mutomo Project in Africa. Proceeds from the event will go towards funding for a pipeline system which will bring water nearer to four specific African villages so that residents do not need to walk long distances to fetch clean water. This system also allows women to be able to concentrate more on farming and working at home while children can attend school. The project includes the installation of two water kiosks and a large plastic water tank which will serve around 3,500 villagers and 1,000 secondary schools pupils. Members of the Rotary Club Marbella-Guadalmina are organising another charity event on Saturday 30 May: a guided car run from Monte Halcones to Grazalema, followed by lunch at El Lago. The funds raised will go to Bubbles and Dreams – an organisation that helps children with rare diseases. DOMINGO MUÑOZ

Creating Stunning Designs in Mosaics Domingo Muñoz Jiménez was 19 years old when he began working on swimming pools, setting up a business called Decopools. He and his team provided pools for such important Costa del Sol clients as Kempinski Hotel & Resort, Las Dunas Hotel, Barceló María Zambrano Hotel, Guadalpin Marbella and Puente Romano. Then, at 37, he suffered a work accident that required several back operations, and he had to start from scratch again and re-think his options. With a passion for glass and stone, he set his sights on mosaics. Today he also includes LED lighting in his work to help bring the mosaics alive, and can produce a design from any photograph or graphic illustration. Every year (February) he holds an exhibition in Estepona at the Casa de Juventud. Domingo Muñoz Tel. (+34) 674 283 161 / domingomunozjimenez@hotmail.es HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Special Presentation of Rice Recipes Book at Alborada

Fresh from the success of his fascinating book “Cooking Critically”, which traces the history of gastronomic journalism since its beginnings in France in the 19th century. Costa del Sol-based author Fernando Sánchez-Gómez has now released a new recipes book on rice dishes. A professional journalist and expert on food who writes regularly for the Andalucian press, Sánchez-Gómez made investigative trips throughout Málaga province to research the book, which contains 222 professional recipes for rice dishes from Michelin-star establishments and other restaurants, cafeterias, bars, gastrobars, chiringuitos and catering schools – including paellas, risottos, salads, fideuás, sushi, desserts and other rice specialities. The recipes are based on local ingredients, cooked using Málaga virgin extra olive oil and accompanied by Málaga Denomination of Origin (D.O.) wines. Sánchez-Gómez held a special book launch and signing at the Alborada restaurant in Arroyo de la Miel, where mine hosts Elisa and Juan – known in the area for their sumptuous traditional cuisine (with cod a main speciality) – were also hosting an appetising “Spring Fortnight of Rice Dishes”. www.facebook.com/arrocesdemalaga www.facebook.com/lacocinadelacritica / twitter.com/SnchezGomez

Spanish Tax Reform

Rental Income from Real Estate in Spain Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers Asociados

This issue we offer an introduction to the Spanish tax system concerning the income you could generate out of properties located in Spain. Description of “inland revenue” in Spain: earnings deriving from the lease, or the creation of rights or powers of use or enjoyment, of rustic and urban Spanish property, or of rights “in rem” over these properties, which are owned, and not used for economic activities, by the taxpayer, shall be considered earnings from real estate. Income derived from the lease of real property is considered earnings from real estate, except if the two following circumstances occur simultaneously: • That at least one business premises is used when conducting the activity and that this use is exclusively for the management of the rented buildings. • That at least one person is employed under a full-time job contract for the purpose of carrying out this management. Since approval of the 2015 tax reform, in order for a property leasing to be considered an economical income against earnings from real estate, at least one person mist have a full-time labour contract for the purpose of carrying out the management of the activity. The other requirement, which was that in

138

the development of the activity there must be at least one premises dedicated exclusively to the management of the activity, has been removed. Taxes to be applied to the property leasing invoices: • When the property is intended as the primary residency of the tenant, the rent must not include any tax – VAT/IVA or withholding tax. • When the use of the property is not going to be a residency and its final use is going to be in the nature of business premises or office – in order words, have a commercial use – then the owner has the obligation to issue an invoice to the tenant including the tax (VAT/IVA or withholding). Tax rates in Spain (general rule): • The VAT/IVA tax rate in force in Spain in 2015 for property rental is 21 per cent. • During 2015 the withholding tax rate to be applied is 20 per cent. This rate should be reduced to 19 per cent in 2016. Arcos & Lamers Asociados Avda. Ricardo Soriano, Marbella Tel. (+34) 952 775 010 / www.arcos-lamersasociados.com
