FROM THE

Some readers might open this issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine and have a déjà vu moment. “Hang on, didn’t they cover outdoor décor last time.” And indeed they would be right. We did – and we’re not finished yet! As we never grow tired of declaring, one of the most wonderful aspects of life in southern Spain is being able to enjoy exquisite weather most of the year, and some pretty pleasant days even in the midst of winter. That also means making sure our homes are set up all yearround for al fresco entertaining, relaxing on the terrace or lounging around the pool, but especially at this time of the year – the key seasonal gateway into summer. To help with those endeavours, our bumper outdoor feature this issue covers everything from seating, cushions, tables, loungers, sofas and dining sets to barbecues, patio heaters, covered terrace extensions, pergolas and shade sails. In our other highlighted Décor & Design sections, we check out latest trends and styles for quality lighting, summery tableware, flamboyant fabrics, wallpapers with the wow factor, cosy floor coverings, state-of-the-art home technology, soothing bedroom ambiences and revamped living areas. We also look back at one of the international home decoration industry’s premier showcases, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April, and feature a selection of the pacesetting furniture products and furnishing accessories that were on display in Milan. Back home, we enjoy a relaxing getaway in the picturesque mountain surroundings of Grazalema to rejuvenate our mind, body and soul for the home refurbishment work that awaits us this spring. Always immensely pleasurable work, of course! Elsewhere, our roving wine correspondent takes us on a fascinating journey into the venerable past (and distinguished present) of, arguably, Spain’s most internationally familiar wine-growing region, La Rioja; and we visit a burgeoning new gourmet market in Fuengirola. Finally, as summer nears and we strengthen our resolve to be in proper shape and good health for the festive months ahead, we put ourselves in the expert hands of the sport and fitness team at Marbella’s Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa; and receive some alwayswelcome and timely advice from our own medical specialist, on this occasion about the potential benefits of coffee and vitamin C for, respectively, helping MS sufferers and preventing cataracts.

This is set to be a busy year for the outdoor furniture sector, with exciting new collections being launched. Trends are leaning towards using durable but lightweight materials that are made for superlative seating comfort. Outdoor living is a huge part of life on the Costa del Sol, and so is stylish living! Outdoor furniture that looks beautiful and is long-lasting is well worth the investment, so choose carefully and you will reap the benefits for years to come. Wide seats with large cushions are always inviting but make sure your outdoor furniture is the right size for your patio or terrace so that it doesn’t clutter the area. Your furniture should adorn the space, making it an attractive and restful area in which to pass away those lazy, sun-filled days – while also offering practicality and good use of space.

Above The Double collection for Roda was designed by Italian architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni. It is an articulated and “total outdoor” seating system including sofas, armchairs, poufs and chairs set out to recreate the feeling of relaxing indoors even though you are outside. The aluminium structure is light and strong whilst the upholstery is soft and multi-layered. The padding is waterproof with a superlative quick-dry material. Available in selected outlets on the Costa del Sol (www.rodaonline.com). Below The “Traveler Europeen” armchair with hood from Roche Bobois comes in a wide range of materials, colours and dimensions. The seat and back can be upholstered in either leather or fabric and the cushions are filled with goose and duck feathers for extra comfort, with a fire-proof, heat-resistant foam in the seat. Designed by Stephen Burks, one of the most highly regarded American industrial designers of his generation, the collection symbolises the transatlantic partnership between the American designer and the French furniture giant Roche Bobois, expressing both the historic and cultural identities of each country. Roche Bobois is situated in Torre Real (www.roche-bobois.com).

Make sure your table not only accommodates the usual number of diners who are visiting but also offers enough space for various dishes and utensils, thus not cluttering the table. As barbecues and buffets become more popular over the summer months, an ample table will serve you well for such occasions. Seating that is not too heavy, is comfortable and durable, and which aesthetically complements the table it surrounds, is key to the perfect dining set. Above This striking outdoor dining set from G&G Italia, aptly named Timeless, combines teak wood with pearl German satin fibre. G&G Italia is situated in CC Plaza del Mar (www.gg-italia.net). Below These dining chairs from the Canasta range by B&B Italia were designed by internationally renowned designer Patricia Urquiola. The Outdoor Retreat…

Add a touch of luxury to your outdoor living area with a customised wooden structure. These eye-catching structural designs harmonise perfectly with the natural surroundings. The materials have been harvested and sourced in accordance with ecologically-friendly practices and guidelines. This particular structure (pictured) provides shade at the end of the swimming pool, offering a stylish area to lounge outside by the water’s edge. The project was carried out by Cape Reed in CC Marbelah Pueblo (www.capereed.com).

NEW CONCEPT STORE OPEN IN JUNE

Many studies have shown that the quality of light affects people in several different ways. For example, well thought-out lighting in an office has been proved to increase productivity and it is universally accepted that people are attracted to places, such as shops and public facilities, that are beautifully lit. Good quality lighting lifts the mood and attracts people to the space that is being illuminated, so it is vital to have good lighting in the home to make you feel as comfortable as possible in your living space. This Drop Cap pendant set by Plumen is a playful lighting collection. The exposed bulbs are characteristic of Plumen and, with its multi-coloured cables, the suspension lamp will certainly be a talking point in the home. Nature & Life

The Beauty and Versatility of Glass

There are always people who try to make good use of our wonderful planet’s riches and then there are those who abuse it. Thankfully, more and more are realising that we are the keepers of the world we live in and on, and therefore it is our duty to look after it for both ourselves and future generations. Many people are now making their homes out of alternative materials to concrete and steel, using wood, stone, straw and clay, to name a few. There is a beautiful straw bale, cob and natural edge wood home in County Sligo (Ireland), for example; and another thatched stone roundhouse in Wales. Many examples found on the internet are a great source of human ingenuity. Designers (me included) are incorporating natural earth elements into their designs as they can give so much warmth in – for example – a sleek modern scene. Too much is not good unless you are creating your whole home that way but the use of wood, for example, brings alive a very sleek look. I have had a love of glass for as long as I can remember. It’s incredibly beautiful, hard working and used in so many ways. It’s also a product that comes from something as commonplace as silica, found in sand. It is better than plastic, which seems to be insidiously taking over our planet as it can be recycled many times over. The company featured this issue, Nathan Allan Glass Studio in Canada, uses glass in a variety of ways.

Nathan Allan Glass Studio has been in the business for 30 years, at the forefront of glass-making. The brainchild of Barry Allan, the company has been producing glass in various aspects for designers and other companies and is constantly evolving its designs and techniques, one of which is free forming. This produces texture-less glass patterns which are 95 per cent clear, allowing ample light transmission while providing privacy. Using new mould materials and combing them with glass options, the company has created 14 glass products over the last five years. It never uses any form of plastic, resin or PVC, thus ensuring the quality and integrity of its products. Nathan Allan’s kiln-formed glass offers light and sun warmth transmission, reducing the need for lighting and heating. The surfaces are sealed, making it a no-maintenance product. There are three main collections covering all requirements and preferences: Classic, Essentials and Josiah J. Working with designers all over the world, Nathan Allan has found a niche market for its products. As glass retains its quality even after many years, it reduces landfill waste and replacements, which are both extremely important aspects to keeping our planet green for as long as we can. www.nathanallan.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Located in a verdant setting in the Mijas hills, this sprawling villa has been designed in the context of a winding river. Architect Marion Regitko organised the house in one meandering form made of natural stone, creating three volumes with an open space interwoven between them hence its name: El Meandro. Sitting on top of the hill, the first volume contains the main living, dining and kitchen area, in an open plan with spectacular sea and mountain views. The living space extends into the exterior, blending into the deck and swimming pool area and south-west garden. A large, over-sailing roof connects the inside and outside, and protects the interior from the summer sun. The second volume’s shape (containing the swimming pool) connects to the third volume, situated further down the hill and pushed into the landscape. This volume comprises three guest rooms with en suite bathrooms, a guest living room and service functions – with private views to the sea. The open spaces in between the three volumes and the hill are more protected and enclosed. They include an exterior lounge area, parking, entrance with lift, private patio for guests and roof garden. A Real Capital Injection for the Southern Spanish Economy Interview with Taylor Cox, Partner, Real Capital Solutions Spain

You are an American equity fund... Why Spain? Since 1984, Real Capital Solutions has analysed, acquired and added value to real estate in America – through the ups and downturns! Spain’s economy post-2007 had some affinity with these situations. We monitored the market movements for some time and there did not appear to be a corporation in place who were willing to help accelerate change by taking charge of the bankrupt developments and transforming them into profitable real estate. We

112

had a clear vision of the success that could be cultivated in the years to come if the right foundations were put into place. How does the Spanish property industry compare to that of America? Every real estate project is extremely complex wherever in the world you are. Within America, there are different rules governed by the different states. Just as we have done in each of these states,

we knew that we would need to create a unified team of local and international experts who could help us to understand local legislation whilst retaining first-class quality in southern Spain. Tell us about your achievements over the past three years… Our initial forays into the Spanish property market proved highly successful, with the transformation of previously redundant buildings. We undertook

complete renovation works and pricing restructures to convert bankrupt stock into â‚Ź50,000,000 worth of property sales in just 24 months. We have since funded a new-build development of golf apartments and we are now promoting fully upgraded properties in an exclusive Elviria location. We understand that quality is a key factor of your property developments. How do you guarantee this? Real Capital Solutions applies an exhaustive due diligence and quality control procedure to all of our works. In terms of our renovation projects, we actively seek out developments where we know that there is potential to add value. We are extremely experienced in transforming neglected projects into something very appealing, suitable for the current market of buyers.

Of course, new-build developments are somewhat more straightforward in terms of the concept and construction works, as we are in complete control of every detail and decision from the beginning. This year is expected to be an important one for the Spanish economic recovery. What do you have planned? Yes, property transactions continue to rise across Spain. And strategic investment in the coming two years is sure to propel the country from a status of recovery to that of significant growth. Over the last six months we have purchased four stunning plots of land across the Costa del Sol and we look forward to launching luxury apartments and villas for sale from summer 2016.

What will the future bring for Real Capital Solutions Spain? We certainly have enough to keep ourselves busy for the years to come. Already we are committed to completing four new-build developments plus sales at The Retreat, Elviria but we are always looking to expand our business network in terms of partnerships, acquisition and commercialisation across the Costa del Sol, the Canary Islands, Mallorca and Ibiza. We have an appetite for â‚Ź100,000,000 more in acquisitions, so we welcome any opportunity that is brought to our attention. Real Capital Solutions Tel. Creating Exceptional Contemporary Garden Settings Interview with Jean Louis and Jeannette de Buck, Artgarden

What services do you offer at Artgarden? Delivery and installation of artificial lawn and technical decking, garden landscaping, and all kinds of reforms and refurbishing inside and outside the home. What is it you love most about your job? We see and feel every garden and every house as if we are working in our own home. We love to keep to our budgets so that our clients only pay what was budgeted. We take pride in taking care of all the work in a way that, when we finish the job, our clients don’t have to clean up or move furniture. Everything we do is aimed at having happy clients, as this is the best way to keep us loving our job. We love gardens and we are always searching for new materials and plants to achieve better results with less upkeep and minimal demand on water. Finally we are extremely proud that our company is already 25 years old! What has been your most unusual project to date? Last year we were asked to create a 3,000 square metre garden that required very low maintenance with a greenhouse for vegetables and an attractive

114

organic vegetable area – all with a modern look to fit in with the outstanding contemporary villa. The result was fantastic! We laid 1,500 square metres of artificial lawn with a little forest of olive, lemon and orange trees with an extended area of hanging rosemary and lavender. There were organic vegetables grown in raised gardens surrounded by all kinds of fruit trees, a huge Mediterranean forest to protect the soil from falling down the slope, palm trees and a large variety of Phormium plants. What have been the main trends in gardening and landscaping in recent years? Many garden owners are tired of depending on gardeners to take care of their property when they are not in Spain, and also of having to pay huge water bills. Water in Spain, especially on the Costa del Sol, is very expensive. Water companies punish high water consumption with increasing prices. In some larger gardens, owners pay up to €3.84 per cubic metre of water. Artificial lawns, decking and the use of Mediterranean plants that are drought-resistant and adapted to the poor soils in our area reduce the water bill by as much as 20 per cent.

On the other hand, modern garden design has to capture the spirit of modern architecture. Minimalistic gardens, big areas of the same plants grouped together, the use of building materials for pads and terraces that reflect the materials used in the house, modern decking and finally, artificial lawns are becoming more and more popular in recent years. Owners of small gardens are able to use their garden as an extension of their terrace, without the need for a gardener or having to do lots of work during their free time. What are the benefits of artificial grass? Throughout my lifetime plants have always been a great part of my life. When I was a child, I could spend hours with my grandmother kneeling in her rock garden taking out weeds or splitting plants to replant them a few metres away. Walking with my dogs in nature, observing the plants I see along the way, makes me calm and happy. You can imagine I was not particularly ecstatic the day my husband came up with the idea of selling artificial grass! In fact, it was the only time in our trajectory working together that we were really disappointed. A few weeks later,

MAY JUNE 6

First Person HL45.indd 114

29/04/16 11:53

the first 1,200 metre square garden we completed convinced me 100 per cent that artifical grass was extremely important. This family had a very active and large dog who was running around in the garden all day. It was impossible to have a nice natural lawn growing in that garden. My husband convinced them to build beautiful borders with Tosco stones to separate grass areas from planting areas and to blend the look of artificial lawn with the very traditional Andalucian style of the villa. I planted beautiful tropical palm trees and colourful plants around the whole garden. Today, 10 years and three dogs later, the artificial lawn still looks green and attractive. The tropical palm trees have become huge and the water bills they have saved over 10 years are just amazing. What are the important issues for someone to know when they are planning an artificial lawn for their garden? After 10 years and hundreds of installed artificial lawn gardens and terraces, in my opinion it is crucial to place huge importance on the preparation of the underground area and the installation of your artificial grass.

Many companies try to make money by offering artificial lawn installations, but watch out for the details. To prepare the underground area, you need to take out all the existing plants and the upper part of the soil. You have to make sure that nothing will grow under the artificial lawn. You need to bring at least six centimetres of good-quality river sand to allow the water to drain away perfectly, and it will look much better if your artificial lawn level is the same as your terrace or pool. This sand area needs to be compacted, well-levelled and covered with good quality anti-weed materials. Existing automatic water irrigation needs to be adapted and all water or light tubes have to be taken away from the artificial lawn area. This all costs money, and if your quote is cheap, you know what you can expect. Not doing proper work in the preparation of the underground area will lead to bad installation of the artificial lawn. Installation is easy if you are used to it. If you spend money on a high-quality artificial lawn, please make an effort with the installation. You can choose between many different artificial lawn samples, according to your preferences. We always recommend buying medium to high quality -

that means looking for a minimum yarn height of 35 millimetres with some kind of memory effect, and minimum total yarn weight of 2.600 gr/m2. If the artificial lawn is produced in Europe, you have the guarantee that you will not install metres of poisonous materials in your garden; and if it is from Asia, you need to ask for European certifications to prove it was made correctly. If somebody tells you their artificial lawn is the best in the world, or the only one with certain qualities, you shouldn’t believe them. All artificial lawns have the same yarn and backing, and all factories have to pay the same price for this yarn and backing. In the end, when you choose a company to do your artificial lawn installation, our best recommendation is that you check out other installations they have completed and ask for recommendations from other clients. Exclusive Constructions Inspired by Nature Interview with John Neal, Cape Reed

Photo: David Toms

The Cape Reed group of companies was set up in South Africa in 1992, and is now well established in Spain. Tell us about some of your most recent work here, for example, on the commercial front… We completed a new beachfront restaurant for the luxurious El Oceano Beach Hotel, which is now one of the summer’s hottest venues. The Cape Reed design team drew its inspiration from the character and history of the ancient Phoenicians – a nation that traversed the Mediterranean many centuries ago with timber and other products. The inspiration and enjoyment we have for our work is all about creating a lifestyle for people who are looking for an environment which will bring them back to nature. We are heavily involved in the global green movement, working with sustainable materials from sustainable resources. All our constructions

116

are ecologically friendly – it is bringing nature back to man and this is our inspiration. We have a very close relationship with nature. We work with sustainable materials and wherever we build we value nature to such a level that our designs incorporate the natural environment. For example, if you have a tree in your garden which is an inherent part of the property, we have the skills and ability to incorporate the tree into the construction. We work with nature, not against it. We respect nature.

policies and values while recognising, encouraging and rewarding a culture where each member of the team works towards a common goal. We also offer a 15-year international guarantee. This has been made possible not only because we have carefully studied the climate and have perfected the construction technique, but also because we have been doing this for a much longer period and, from our experience and living proof, we know we can stand by our word.

What other key principles influence Cape Reed’s work ethic? Our basic principles are to construct eco-friendly custom-made constructions of the highest quality for the residential and commercial markets. We always act honestly and in line with our beliefs,

What is your current place in the market? We are the world leaders in our industry. First and foremost we are represented in all of the leading economies. We have offices in many countries across the globe. In Cape Town we set up our first office, which is where the expertise, materials and

MAY JUNE 6

First Person HL45.indd 116

29/04/16 11:53

craftsmanship are based, making it our logistical office. We have a regional office in Dubai for the Middle East, and in Europe our regional office is in Spain with satellite offices in Provence (France) and the Algarve (Portugal). The most recent addition to the list was a regional office in Miami for the Americas. What is your vision for the company? We are committed to be the world’s best in our industry. We want to create a unique lifestyle for people who are committed to exclusive living in a natural way, using safari or island-style structures made from sustainable materials. We want to keep pursuing ecologically friendly ways to create beautiful structures that will last for many years to come. as well as to continue to meet our clients’ needs and exceed their expectations through our professionalism and skills.

Obviously, a major part of that in Marbella is modern architecture… We want to show people that our products are just as applicable in a modern hi-tech environment as they are in a traditional environment because our products, as well as our construction techniques, are keeping up with modern technology. We are providing clients with the choice to have the timber of their constructions colour-washed – many chiringuitos (beach restaurants) along the Costa have a classic dark brown look but our timbers can now be colourcoded, giving them a fresh and modern appearance. So how do you see the future of modern architecture? Marbella is a trend-setting area for modern architecture for the whole of Spain and even Europe. Marbella is one of the so called sought-after addresses

for second-home buyers, as Marbella creates a lifestyle that home buyers have always dreamed about, particularly coming from central or northern Europe. With the incredible climate we have in Marbella, outdoor living is becoming more of an area that must be enjoyed and should complement not only your home but also your aspired lifestyle. Marbella can certainly make your dreams come true and can make you feel who you really are. What does the home represent to you? The home represents to me a place where I can be who I really am. Tambor del Llano is situated in the stunning Sierra de Grazalema nature park and offers a truly special holiday experience away from the hustle and bustle of the coast, allowing you to relax in the hotel’s beautiful surroundings. The hotel itself is a one-time barn converted into 10 good-sized bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and views out to the natural park. The decoration is basic but contemporary. In the dining area, there are oversized lamps that hang over tables made of recycled wood, giving the space an industrial urban look that respects the natural environment. The large windows that open out to a terrace fill the open space with natural sunlight, allowing you to fully appreciate the woodland beyond. Owner Carmen Bueno Sánchez is a fountain of local knowledge and goes above and beyond the call of duty for her clients, helping them in any way she can to maximise their experience at Tambor del Llano. As she explains, “The barn was renovated last year by architect Daniel Camargo Casali and we opened the doors of the hotel a few months ago. The whole purpose of the hotel is to offer tranquillity to our visitors, ensuring the utmost respect for our natural surroundings. The 32-hectare Biosphere Reserve, which is a wild bird special protection area, has a cork-oak forest where wild flowers and mushrooms grow and where our horses, sheep and other animals roam free. To really appreciate our stunning environment, we offer hiking and horse riding treks as well as bird watching, photography, botanical, yoga and natural food cookery classes to name but a few of the activities on offer here. All of the courses help you to disconnect, relax and learn more about nature. As we are in an area that is free of light contamination, it is a perfect place for stargazing. Our natural environment gives us something to enjoy no matter whether it’s day or night!” On the day of our departure, Carmen booked us into Bodega Cuesta La Viña, a vineyard approximately half an hour away from the hotel that looks out over the breathtaking Embalse de Zahara-el Gastor lake, to learn more about the local wines. On arrival we were met by Jacinto, whose passion for wine production was clearly evident from the offset. While showing us around the vineyard he told us he had planted by hand every single vine himself. Maintaining their good health is a daily job but one that gives him great satisfaction. All of their wines are organic and come from Tempranillo, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano and Pinot Noir grapes. After trying some of their truly delectable wines, we were invited to sit outside to take in the stunning views while being treated to a large array of tapas that were all sourced locally. Hotel Tambor del Llano is just two hours from the coast and is a perfect weekend retreat to wind down and get back to nature. The town of Grazalema is rich in culture and natural beauty and, if you are a foodie, the local cheeses and meats washed down with some of the wonderful local wines will make your trip to this enchanting area wonderfully complete. El Tambor del Llano is offering détox courses held by Salud Integral (Overall Health) professionals – a group of medical specialists from different fields of expertise. The next course will be from 1 to 3 July and it will be a special weekend just for women.

OPEN ROAD

Pop Art Makeover for Bentley Continental

For many, Sir Peter Blake is best known for co-designing the sleeve for The Beatles’ iconic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Now in his 80s, the “godfather of British pop art” has collaborated with Bentley Motors on another innovative project in aid of charity. Bentley commissioned Blake to develop a one-of-a-kind Continental GT V8 S Convertible, and the vehicle will be auctioned by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 24 June, with the proceeds going to Care2Save Charitable Trust, which provides palliative and hospice care around the world. One of the most striking features of his bold vision is a St James Red heart motif hand painted onto a Continental Yellow bonnet, intended to be a symbol in keeping with the compassionate work of hospices. The use of collage throughout the exterior of the car demonstrates bright but clearly defined colour, while the cabin is also an expression of individuality, with each seat trimmed in different hide colour. The artist’s signature is incorporated onto the fascia panel and embroidered on all four seat headrests, and the design also includes a personalised playlist from his favourite music selection. The car’s unique features have been delivered through Bentley’s specialist bespoke division, Mulliner.

castillo de monda AN ENCHANTING CULINARY EXPERIENCE Photos: Peter Staes

If the walls of Monda’s venerable castle could talk, they would have some intriguing tales with which to regale modern-day visitors. Archaeologists and historians remain divided on the exact location, but there is strong evidence that the famous “Battle of Munda” – where Julius Caesar himself led his troops against the Roman republican forces – was held in the hills and on the plans of current-day Monda. That was in 45 BC. Today, life in Monda (a half-hour drive from the coast, in the folds of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range) is considerably more bucolic, and the castle is now a hotel rather than a fortress, with its walls enclosing a serene setting of cosy rooms, relaxing terraces with breathtaking views over the countryside… and a restaurant serving sumptuous gourmet cuisine. After passing through various different guises in recent years, the Castillo de Monda has now been taken over by three Dutch entrepreneurs – two of whom have previously run a restaurant in Coin – and it was re-opened in March after a major revamp that adds a more contemporary ambience while preserving the castle’s traditional charm. The restaurant is spacious (seating 80 people) and bathed in natural light, with a newly-refurbished décor featuring large plants as room dividers, high ceilings, arches and contemporary touches such as Thonet-designed elm wood chairs.

Both the dress code and the atmosphere are casual, encouraging diners to feel at home. The restaurant terrace is surrounded by glass and well protected against harsher weather elements. The chef and his team use sustainable local products whenever possible, and change the menu according to seasonal ingredients and new culinary trends and tastes. The menu is both innovative and reasonably priced. During our visit in April, we were able to enjoy an aperitif on one of the terraces overlooking the town below, with a mild sun and gentle breeze setting a pleasant late afternoon scene. For our meal we savoured a succulent risotto with fresh peas, black truffle and crispy sage; steak tartar with toast and foam of Ras El Hanout; albacore tuna (white meat tuna) with oyster mayonnaise and wasabi: prawns on toast with avocado cream; and truffle chocolate pie with a gel of grapefruit, sorbet of oranges and crunchy sugared hazelnuts. Later we adjourned once more to the terrace for coffee and liqueurs, admiring the last remnants of the setting sun as it enveloped the mountains in a picturesque blanket of multi-coloured shades. Diverse Delicacies at Dizzy Heights CAFETERÍA & PANADERÍA LA HEREDIA Photos: Mark Rood

When Dutch-born Yvonne Van Kleef opened Cafetería & Panadería La Heredia 10 years ago, she never realised how much of a hit it was going to be with locals of all nationalities. Nestled in the corner of the charming La Heredia urbanisation, this popular bakery and café offers indoor and al fresco dining on a wonderful terrace with shaded areas for those want to avoid the sun. When you enter Cafetería & Panadería La Heredia you are immediately struck by a cornucopia of different delights. First of all there is the bakery, where they produce a wide range of different Dutch breads including the increasingly popular Spelt, as well as tantalising cakes and pastries. Their bread is so famous that people from all over the Coast order it in advance and in bulk. Their delicatessen offers a mouth-watering array of homemade, pre-prepared specialities such as salads, noodles, vegetables, quiches, soups, pastas and much more – including typical Dutch dishes such as bami and hutspot. All meals can either be consumed in the café or taken home in microwaveable containers. If you are into cold meats, you will find various fine cuts imported from Holland, sliced and vacuumpacked onsite; and if you are a cheese lover, then you must visit their Dutch cheese counter! The menu offers toasties, hamburgers and an allday breakfast for just under eight euros, so there is something for everyone, as well as catering for special diets such as gluten-free and low-salt options. For drinks they offer good quality coffee, and teas, smoothies, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. If you are holding an event or dinner party, Cafetería & Panadería La Heredia also provide catering services so you can sit back and enjoy your party while they do all of the hard work. The design of Cafetería & Panadería La Heredia is contemporary and extremely inviting. An interesting décor feature is their wine cellar. Actually built around original mountain rock, it is a true talking point. Cafetería & Panadería La Heredia Ctra. de Ronda Km. 43 (A397), Urb. La Heredia, Benahavís Tel. The newly opened Pasta y Basta, in the heart of the quaint village of La Campana in Nueva Andalucía (Marbella), has already got the locals into a frenzy for its authentic Italian cooking and contemporary décor. Owned by the charming Michael Christian and wife and husband team Patricia and Andy Cavaciuti, this restaurant is quite unassuming from the outside but when you enter you realise it has something special to offer. The owners have put their own touches to the décor, which are sure to put a smile on your face. For example, there is the front of a car (Italian brand Fiat, of course) mounted above the open kitchen at the far end of the restaurant, which shows that Andy’s love of cars does not just stop outside on the road but also transcends into his restaurant! Other quirky design features include a pasta-making machine at the restaurant entrance while, in the men’s bathroom, the floor is made up of hundreds of Heineken bottle tops and in the ladies’, pennies line the floor. For those who prefer to dine al fresco, there is an outdoor area where you can soak up the buzzy street ambience on a large raised terrace. Young chef Cedric Locquet has worked in several prestigious establishments along the coast and has now brought his culinary flair to La Campana. He has put together an uncomplicated menu, with each dish packing a punch in terms of taste and creativity. When you meet Cedric you can tell he is extremely excited about this new challenge and he truly wants to impress diners with his gastronomic talents. To kick-off your dining experience at Pasta y Basta, there are some wonderful starters to tantalise the taste buds, such as beef carpaccio (which has already become a big hit with the clientele), minestrone soup, bruschetta, salads and melon with Parma ham – so there is something to suit everyone’s tastes. As to be expected, all the pasta is homemade and cooked to perfection. A variety of pasta dishes on the menu are all indulgent, hearty and served beautifully on the plate. We were treated to the prawn and clam pappardelle, which we would highly recommend. There are no pizzas on offer, but if pasta is not your preference there are some fantastic alternative dishes such as risottos (the mushroom and truffle is a must try) and Ossobuco, for example. If desserts are your weakness, the zingy lemon tart and their unusual take on a tiramisu are popular with diners. There is a good selection of wines on the menu at very reasonable prices, as well as beers and soft drinks and even cocktails if you so desire. In May Pasta y Basta is open every evening except for Mondays, and in June they are open every evening. Pasta y Basta Avda. Miguel de Cervantes 20, Nueva Andalucía (La Campana) Reservations: Tel. Gourmet Delicacies at New Fuengirola Market

In recent years Fuengirola has enhanced its reputation as one of the Costa del Sol’s centrepieces of culinary excellence and diversity. From a burgeoning array of tapas establishments to high-end restaurants offering Spanish and international gastronomy, the town’s eateries cater for all tastes and budgets. The town council even promotes an annual “erotic tapas” competition that might displease some steadfast connoisseurs of haute cuisine (and which can

130

sometimes be slightly daft and chintzy) but has proved to be increasingly popular among fun-loving foodies and tourists. Now, locals and visitors have an eye-catching new attraction that raises the gastronomic bar even higher. Located in the heart of the town, opposite the post office (Correos), the La Galería Gastromercado is the creation of four childhood friends from Fuengirola, Juan de Dios García, Alvaro Castñeira and architects Pedro and Carmen Martin.

Work began in May last year on a vacant plot in the town centre, and earlier this year the space was transformed into an innovative gourmet market with a commercial area under a large glass dome (overhead blinds for sun protection will be incorporated for summer), an indoor patio with a verdant vertical garden, and a connecting corridor to a second street access – thus effectively creating an attractive new pedestrian mall in the town. The market comprises 13 different outlets run by leading culinary professionals: a cafeteria-cake shop, specialist beer bar, wine bar and cocktail bar; and nine of-

fering a diverse range of cuisine including Italian (pizzas and pastas), croquettes, prime meat, gourmet, seafood, muffins, salmorejo (a creamy cold soup), traditional Spanish and sushi. WINE NOTES

Tradition Pure and Simple By AJ Linn

Rioja is the most famous name in Spanish wine, but no-one seems quite sure when it was first applied. A fair guess would be when the wine started being consumed outside the region. Up until then it would have been referred to merely as “tinto”, and those who drank it would have had no idea that there were other regions of Spain making different wines. Oddly, some people still think Rioja translates simply as “red wine”, but the name comes from the River Oja that runs through the region (Río Oja, geddit?); nothing to do with “rojo” or “tinto”. It is important for reasons that will be explained to understand that La Rioja consists of three distinctive areas. The best is recognised to be the smaller Rioja Alavesa in the north and part of the Basque Country. Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja are the other two. The problem has always been that the total area is vast and, since winemakers blend grapes from all over to make any particular wine, the label on the bottle gives little clue as to what area the grapes come from. Although the controlling body (Consejo Regulador) is taking steps to enable bodegas to make single vineyard wines, as is permitted in other denominations, the still unintroduced new measures have been described as too little too late, and some Alavesa bodegas are voting with their feet. The headline casualty has been the prestigious Bodegas Artadi, whose respected wines are now classified as “vinos de mesa” (table wine), although prices will not be affected. Wine has been made in the region since at least 873. In 1860 the Alava regional government asked French oenologist Jean Pineau to come down from Bordeaux and show the local farmers how to make decent wine. The year Pineau left Spain, 1868, was the year the Marqués de Riscal inaugurated his new winery in Elciego. Twelve years later the Marqués de Murrieta bought the Finca Ygay, where he produced the wines that won gold medals at the Paris Expos of 1878 and 1889. It is said that the development of Rioja wines owes a lot to two marquises and an insect. The insect was the phylloxera bug that destroyed the Bordeaux region, and as a result sent wine buyers scurrying south to Spain to buy the produce. Initially the French merchants were content to pay good prices for the local wines, but it was not long before they realised that the sensible option was to buy vineyards and set about making their own. MORE DISTINGUISHED VARIETIES Phylloxera arrived in Spain three decades after it had devastated France, but being ready for it enabled a 10-year replanting programme to get the wineries back in production relatively quickly. Initially though the market was dominated by large bodegas buying grapes anywhere they could, and producing undistinguished wines that nevertheless found a ready export market. Not until the 1990s was greater attention paid to quality, and smaller wineries making more distinguished varieties came to the drinking public’s notice. There is no wine region in the world that is free of class distinction. Usually this is based on simple seniority and the oldest are the top-rankers, but in Rioja a divergence in the way wine is made has divided bodegas into two categories: traditional and modern. Classic traditional Riojas need no defining, and words like silky, elegant and tasteful are apt, while the modern versions have a concentrated potent taste, deeper tones and often more alcohol. French oak is used for ageing wine, instead of the more traditional American, and the term “alta expression” has come to describe the wines that make up the trend. The reason for this schism, if it can be described as such, has been laid at the feet of controversial wine critic Robert Parker, who tended to favour the heavier, more up-front, modern style (though he would later deny it). But while there are about a

136

dozen bodegas that are responsible for some excellent “modern” Riojas the traditional style has lost no market share. Wineries whose history goes back more than a century are surprisingly common in La Rioja, and the 125year old La Rioja Alta Bodega (www.riojaalta.com) is still owned by the five original founding families. The American oak maturing barrels are made in the bodega’s in-house cooperage, something of a rarity these days. Even the bottle labels look as if they have remained unchanged for decades. La Rioja Alta’s five classic red wines are all Tempranillo-based with added Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. The premium Gran Reserva 890 (2004 vintage currently available) has been six years in oak, and costs around €90. The Gran Reserva 904 (2005 vintage) is €30, Viña Ardanza 2007 €19, Viña Arana Reserva €14 and Viña Alberdi €11. If you have based your Rioja-centred enjoyment on supermarket brands, here you have a simply spectacular opportunity in terms of value-for-money and a reminder of what classic Rioja wine is all about.

It’s 10am Thursday morning, and here we are at the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa’s prestigious tennis courts. On these clay courts, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, John McEnroe, Boris Becker and many other renowned professionals have left their footprints. And today you wouldn’t be surprised to run into another famous player, as many come here to practise for major tournaments. The centre court can seat 2,500 people and it is also used for international concerts. None other than Liza Minnelli, Dionne Warwick and Lionel Richie have performed here in an intimate setting – and a concert by Seal is scheduled for this summer (18 July). Offering a wide range of sports in a privileged location, the club was founded by Björn Borg in 1979. There are eight well-maintained clay and two hard courts, four paddle courts, beautiful surroundings, a gym, personal trainers, a relaxation room, a Finnish sauna, a Turkish steam bath, and locker rooms with bathrobes, towels and flip-flops… I am now in one of the most exclusive tennis clubs in all of Europe! Feeling a bit nervous, as I haven’t played for more than a year, I enter court number five where Isaac is waiting for me with a towel, a bottle of water and a candy bar in case I need some sugar during the practice session. He immediately calms me down and says I should have fun, just relax and play. The weather is gorgeous – as it nearly always is in Marbella – so I am looking forward to finding out what remains of my tennis skills.

After one hour of training with Isaac, having seen every grain of gravel, I am completely worn out – but extremely satisfied. I’ve had a great lesson and I’m feeling less guilty now, enjoying coffee and a light lunch on the terrace. My colleague has joined me after her session with a personal trainer at the gym. We share our experiences, both sporting red faces from all the hard work. Like me, she hasn’t been doing workouts for quite a long time, but the personal trainer provided invaluable support. The club’s gym has sophisticated fitness and cardio training machines and, of course, personalised programs that can be adapted to your needs. They also offer Tai Chi, Pilates, yoga and spinning classes. Every Wednesday and Sunday there is a mix-in, where they start with 30 minutes of theory and practice and then play matches for one and a half hours. This is great for meeting new people and playing at different levels. I have enjoyed my day at this club so much that I will definitely come back to try the mix-in. Exciting Revelations About

Coffee And Vitamin C

By John Schieszer

PREVENTING CATARACTS THROUGH DIET AND LIFESTYLE A diet rich in vitamin C could cut the risk of cataract progression by one-third, suggests a newly published study in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The research is also the first to show that diet and lifestyle may play a greater role than genetics in cataract development and severity. Cataracts occur naturally with age and cloud the eye’s lens, turning it opaque. Despite the advent of modern cataract removal surgery, cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness globally. Researchers at King’s College London looked at whether certain nutrients from food or supplements could help prevent cataract progression. They also tried to find out how much environmental factors such as diet mattered versus genetics. The team examined data from more than 1,000 pairs of female twins from the United Kingdom. Participants answered a food questionnaire to track the intake of vitamin C and other nutrients, including vitamins A, B, D, E, copper, manganese and zinc. To measure the progression of cataracts, digital imaging was used to check the opacity of their lenses at around age 60. They performed a followup measurement on 324 pairs of the twins about 10 years later. During the baseline measurement, diets rich in vitamin C were associated with a 20 per cent risk reduction for cataract. After 10 years, researchers found that women who reported consuming more vitamin C-rich foods had a 33 per cent risk reduction of cataract progression. Genetic factors accounted for 35 per cent of the difference in cataract progression; and environmental factors, such as diet, accounted for 65 per cent. How vitamin C inhibits cataract progression may have to do with its strength as an antioxidant. The fluid inside the eye is normally high in vitamin C, which helps prevent oxidation that clouds the lens. More vitamin C in the diet may

increase the amount present in the fluid around the lens, providing extra protection. Researchers noted that the findings only pertain to consuming the nutrient through food and not vitamin supplements. “The most important finding was that vitamin C intake from food seemed to protect against cataract progression,” said study author Dr. Christopher Hammond, who is a professor of ophthalmology at King’s College London (UK). “While we cannot totally avoid developing cataracts, we may be able to delay their onset and keep them from worsening significantly by eating a diet rich in vitamin C.” POSSIBLE HELP FOR MS SUFFERERS Heavy daily coffee drinking (more than 30 fluid ounces – or around one litre) may help reduce your risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a new Swedish study. Caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant, has neuroprotective properties and can suppress the production of chemicals involved in the inflammatory response, which may explain the new findings. The researchers looked at two representative population studies. One was in Sweden and was comprised of 1,620 adults with MS and a comparison group of 2,788. The second study was an American one that included 1,159 people with MS and 1,172 healthy people. The researchers found that the risk of MS was consistently higher among those drinking fewer cups of coffee every day in both studies, even after taking account of potentially important influential factors such as smoking and weight. In the Swedish study, coffee consumption was associated with 28-30 per cent reduced risk of MS among heavy coffee drinkers. Similar results were found in the US study, with a 26-31 per cent lower risk among heavy coffee drinkers compared with those who never drank coffee. The higher the quantity of coffee drunk, the lower the risk of MS, the results showed.

Breathing is essential of course. But not all breathing is good – sometimes it’s downright dysfunctional! Specifically, dysfunctional breathing is when people breathe more than their body requires. They may use the upper part of the chest rather than the diaphragm or take intermittent gulping breathes. Dysfunctional breathing can even arise from an over reliance on the mouth for respiration. Most people will suffer a bout of over breathing at some time or other, sometimes breathing twice as much as is required. Periods of stress or anxiety commonly cause a brief attack of over breathing. However, for some people this type of breathing can become persistent and occurs most of the time. Often they’re not even aware the’re doing it and the condition is then known as Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome. Sufferers may say they feel very breathless or that the chest feels tight or wheezy (symptoms that can easily be mistaken for or exaggerated in asthma). They can feel quite dizzy and as though their heart is racing. Often people tell us that they are “worried they aren’t getting enough oxygen”. But it isn’t the oxygen that causes the problems – over breathing lowers the carbon dioxide (CO2) in our blood and that’s what leads to these scary symptoms. Far from being a waste product of breathing, CO2 plays a number of important physiological roles in our bodies. The gas influences many enzyme reactions and

142

controls the constriction or relaxation of blood vessels and airways. It acts to help speed up the release of oxygen from red blood cells into muscle and even plays a part in muscle contraction itself. Pretty important stuff! CO2 levels are controlled by breathing. Breathe more than needed, by taking deeper or faster breaths, and CO2 levels in the blood fall. Hold your breath and CO2 levels rise again. Sometimes a person’s breathing can be quite regular but then a yawn, sigh or coughing bout brings on symptoms, as CO2 is reduced. Talking too quickly without pausing for breath lowers the blood CO2 and that’s why people sometimes tell us they feel worse when chatting on the phone. Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome is a condition that mimics many others so investigations are needed to rule out other possible causes but once a diagnosis is made, specialised physiotherapy can help. news SPANISH GOLF OPEN

Top European Tour Action at Valderrama

Europe’s number one course was in typically devilish form as players battled for supremacy in the Open de España in April. Few players managed to card underpar rounds over four demanding days of competition at the Sotogrande course, and the winning total – by 27-year-old Andrew Johnston from England – was one-over. Not since the 2013 US Open had a European Tour event been won with an over-par tally. It was Johnston’s debut victory on the main tour (he won

twice on the 2014 Challenge Tour) and it came after a roller-coaster final day, with several players challenging for victory. In the end, he secured a one-stroke victory over runner-up Dutchman Joost Luiten, while tournament host Sergio García carded a closing 67 to finish third another stroke back. Among the spectators on the final day was Real Madrid footballer Gareth Bale (pictured above left).

news LIBERTY BROKERS

New Stars of the Marketing Show

The “stars” of Liberty Seguros’ new press advertising campaign for 2016 are the actual brokers and agents themselves, in line with the company’s belief that its intermediaries (another name for agents and brokers) should be strongly featured in marketing campaigns because they are at the core of the business. A specially created microsite was designed for the intermediaries to access, where they were able to vote for the “real look and feel” of a true insurance intermediary, and the person they thought could represent the look of a real intermediary from a selection of photographic models. The results were conclusive: the winning choice was a smart but casual look.

As intermediaries experience director Iván Ortego noted, “We value the amazing support that all our agents and brokers give to Liberty Seguros and, of course, to all our valued customers. What a better way to get them involved in our business strategy for 2016?” Liberty Seguros currently has over 300 expat intermediaries in Spain, providing professional customers’ advice on any insurance matter, including car, home, life, marine, leisure and pet, as well as business and commercial covers. ALARMA UNIVERSAL

Three Decades of Security System Solutions Alarma Universal is celebrating 30 years on the Costa del Sol as “the most innovative security system experts in the area”. The Fuengirolabased company began in 1983, was taken over by Peter Nissen in 1986, and took off with the introduction of his unique “Security Triangle” system to Spain. In 2014 Nissen received an award in the presence of representatives from the Spanish government, senior police officers and his peers, after José Manuel López Fernández from the Spanish Security Industry Society (FES) nominated Alarma Universal to receive the award based on the company’s ethics of discretion, seriousness and honesty. The premise behind the “Security Triangle” is that an alarm system will only be completely effective if it has three vital elements: detection from the security system, verification from a 24-hour control centre, and reaction from the security guard. It is the reaction part of the service that is unique to Alarma Universal, as they have their own team of security guards. “It would not have been possible to achieve this important milestone without our team of dedicated professionals,” said Christina Nissen, Peter’s daughter and director of Alarma Universal. “We continue to look forward and are constantly updating our systems to include the latest technological developments, to ensure that we respond to our customers’ needs and can provide the most effective security systems for homes and businesses on the Costa del Sol.” Avda. SPECIALIST ADVICE

New Regulations for the

Holiday Rental Market Article supplied by Spanish legal and fiscal advisors, Arcos & Lamers

Due to the increasing number of new ways to travel, the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) has decided to regulate properties that offer a tourist accommodation service, in order to establish minimum guarantees of quality and safety for users. This new regulation involves those properties that are rented as a whole and which are rented out for rooms, not including those rented for more than two months, holidays without profit, properties in rural areas and real estate formed by three or more homes. The Junta has established a series of requirements to be met: • The property should have an occupational licence. • The rooms should have direct ventilation to an outside system or courtyard, and a darkening windows system. • They should be furnished and equipped. • They should be provided with a heating and cooling system. • They must have a first aid kit. • Tourist information for the area must be provided. • Complaints and claims forms should be available for customers in a visible place inside the house. • The house should be cleaned at the entrance and exit for customers. • General bedding and furnishings for the house should be supplied.

152

• A phone number must be available for any enquiry the tenants might have. • Users should be provided with information and tools for the operation of appliances. • Users must be informed of internal rules. The regulations also state that at the time of arrival documentation should be given to the users, at least containing the following: the name of the person or operator of the property; the alphanumeric code entered with the Tourism Registry of Andalucía; the number of people who will occupy the property, entry and departure; the total price of the room; and a contact phone number. Registrations are made at the Registro de Turismo de Andalucia (Tourism Registry of Andalucía), and the deadline to register the property is the beginning of May. It should include the cadastral references and the corresponding Licence of First Occupation. As for sanctions for non-compliance, these are divided into minor, serious and very serious, which can amount to fines of up to €150,000 for the most serious offences. Arcos & Lamers Asociados Avda. SPECIALIST ADVICE

Buying a House or Apartment in Spain Article supplied by global expat network Angloinfo

Spanish real estate is a complex area, so before you get in contact with local realtors or real estate agents get to grips with what’s involved in purchasing property in Spain. There are many ways to search for properties to buy in Spain: estate agents, property magazines and ‘’home hunters”. In more popular or urban areas estate agents offer an English-speaking service. The whole process of buying any type of property or land in Spain is strictly regulated. Professional advice should be sought with regard to your personal situation when buying a property. It’s important to carefully consider the location and type of property, depending on whether it will be a main residence, second home, holiday home to be let out on occasion or a property to be let as an investment for the future.

Make a list of the important elements – the purchase price, the overall size and number of rooms, whether a sotano (cellar), garage, garden, terrace or balcony is essential – as it will keep the estate agent or home hunter on the right track to finding the ideal property. The type of property and its condition is also an important consideration. There are certain types of properties that will not be acceptable for mortgage finance. The property should be classed as “habitable”, meaning structurally sound and having the basic utilities of electricity, mains water and sewerage system, all conforming to the current regulations. All properties that are registered on the Registro de la Propiedad (Land Registry) can be mortgaged. (This subject will be covered in the May-June edition.)

More information about buying property in Spain, property jargon that will be helpful and other essential information can be found at: www.angloinfo.com/costadelsol
