Casamance is available from UDesign on the Ronda Road (www.udesign.es), Femont Galvan in the Marbella Club (www.femontgalvan.com), Cort Idea on the Mijas Road (www.cortidea. es), Casasola Décor near Torre Real (www.casasoladecor.com), Estuco Interiors in C. Plaza, Nueva Andalucía (www.estucointeriors.com) and Nezha Kanouni in Pol. Ind. Estepona and Marmorin Build & Design Center in Marbella (www.nezhakanouni.com).

This is a key period for those seeking inspiration and eager to integrate latest trends into their homes. With the Mediterranean weather pleasantly placid and summer distractions still a way off, the spring months offer an excellent opportunity to undertake a major makeover of the home or minor refurbishments and re-furnishings in specific areas. At this time of the year, we are also greatly helped in this respect by the convenient scheduling of Europe’s premier décor and design fairs and exhibitions. From Maison & Object and Deco Off in Paris and IMM Cologne in January to Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan in April and, closer to home, Design Marbella from 4 to 9 April, we can take advantage of an exceptional kaleidoscope of ideas and innovations in home décor and design. Maison & Objet’s Observatoire, for example, was created in 2002 to catalogue new trends in consumption and emerging lifestyles. Since September 2016, the observatory’s three trend consultants have taken turns designing the Inspirations Forum, “to bring the edition’s concept to life and share their own personal vision of the collective work carried out all year round”. In January, it was NellyRodi’s turn, with the trend agency’s Vincent Grégoire designing the Inspirations Space and Café-Bookstore. Explaining why this theme was chosen, he said, “The financial crisis and the digital revolution have had a tremendous impact on our behaviours. Consumers who used to have a passive posture, buying products without questioning the brands that sell them, have found empowerment. Through digital technologies, consumers now have access to product information, can compare prices, and even have the possibility to share comments on the products and rate them. “A new generation of hyper-connected and hyper-informed consumers is reclaiming control: they are establishing their status as an inescapable partner for brands… consumers are becoming trendsetters themselves, fully-fledged influencers. This is what we have called the ‘showroomisation’ trend: it is no longer the product that makes the consumer, but the consumer that makes the product… Consumers no longer want to be told stories: they want to experience things. So living rooms and retail stores are turned into stages for the whole world to see.” Grégoire warned that the retail business “is in urgent need of re-enchantment. A shop is not merely a place where goods are stored for sale. The advent of digital technologies, for better or worse, is pushing retail businesses to come to life, to make their shops feel more like home. Customers need a place where they can experience products and share their opinions. The point is no longer to please everyone, but to please one’s community.” Grégoire’s observations are particularly relevant on the Costa del Sol, home to a cosmopolitan and savvy community of contemporary trend followers. We are also fortunate to have a broad diversity of retail businesses that offer the kind of experiences he refers to – many of them (we are pleased to note) showcased in the following pages of Home & Lifestyle Magazine.

Dazzling Wallpaper Give your room an instant makeover with wallpaper. We have seen an upsurge in popularity in recent years for designs depicting plants, flowers and animals, as well as geometric bold prints for statement walls. A single dramatic wall can completely revitalise the look of a room, giving it an artistic focal point. The Rousseau hand-painted wallpaper by De Gournay is designed on Mare Verde scenic paper. The tropical design with unctuous blue hues and vibrant colours popping out through the floral interludes gives this wallpaper its eyecatching appeal. De Gournay is available from UDesign on the Ronda Road (www.udesign.es), Aalto in Urb. Carolina Park in Marbella (www.aaltofurniture. com) and Femont Galvan in the Marbella Club (www.femontgalvan.com).

On the large terrace there was the opportunity to install two styles of shade solutions: one large shade sail that is fixed to posts, offering shade to the whole lounge area; as well as a ribbon-like shade design that covers the dining area. Material that is usually used for the shade sails was cut into strips and intertwined between the wooden roof slats, offering an elegant and unique shade solution. This material comes in a range of different colours to suit your tastes and requirements. The installation was carried out by Acoola in Pol. Ind. San Pedro Alcรกntara (www.acoola.eu). Below Make a dramatic shade statement with this bespoke shade sail that is made-to-measure, giving the perfect amount of shade coverage to the area exposed to the sun. Sensational

Rugs With Mediterranean homes being usually cold underfoot with marble, tiled or stone floors, a rug is a must-buy to give warmth and texture to a room. Whether you want your rug to be a focal point by adorning a splash of colour or a bold pattern, or simply to blend into its surroundings with a neutral colour, a good-quality rug should always be considered bearing in mind the wear and tear it has to endure.

La Manufacture Cogolin, part of the Tai Ping group, presents a new colour palette for the Jardin intĂŠrieur collection by India Mahdavi. In this photo the colour is hyacinth on an anis background, but four additional colours are also offered. Tai Ping is available from Vertigo in the Marbella Club (www.vertigo-marbella.com).

How and when was Proinco founded? Proinco is a family business that was founded by Manuel Baena in Málaga in 1974 as Proveedora a la Industria y Construcción S.A. The company gradually established its presence in the sector and consolidated its position after years of hard work and sacrifice, forging cordial and trusted relationships with clients over the years. In 1987, a new stage of expansion began throughout the Andalucian region with the objective of catering for clients’ diverse requirements and offering even better services. This constant evolution and continuous growth over more than 40 years has led to the Proinco Group now comprising 15 sales outlets, seven Proveedora a la Industria y Construcción S.A. warehouses in Málaga province (Málaga city, Fuengirola, Estepona, Marbella and Vélez) and Córdoba, and five for Proinco Saneamientos S.L. in Antequera, Ronda, Sevilla, Granada and Algeciras. Proinco has adapted to new sales systems and incorporated continuous changes in accordance with the needs of customers, and remains firmly committed to ongoing market specialisation. In addition to being official distributors of the Roca brand, the company is engaged in wholesale and retail sales to both individuals and professionals in the plumbing, bathroom, air-conditioning, swimming pool, irrigation and solar energy sectors. At the same time Proinco offers its services as an intermediary between manufacturers and professionals, lending our facilities for the display of new products and for the training of professionals. Proinco is currently one of the most dynamic and well-consolidated companies in the sales market for plumbing materials, air-conditioning and bathrooms at an Andalucian level. Proinco is now a leading company nationwide. In your opinion, what have been the keys to its success? It is thanks to hard work and a well-defined future vision that has always been a hallmark of the company. Proinco has been able to expand regionally and be recognised at a national level, opting for new technologies, and focusing on energy and consumption savings. What are the main recent trends in bathrooms? New trends include smart toilets, and toilets and seats with personal hygiene technology, as well as minimalist lines, neutral colours, expansive coating items and increasingly thin porcelain products. And finally… your most important goals for Proinco over the rest of the year? This year we plan to launch an online store. Proinco S.A. (Proveedora a la Industria y la Construcción S.A.) C/. Lighting

Looking on the

Bright Side Whether you want a show-stopping chandelier or a functional lighting solution, the lighting world has few bounds when it comes to creativity and cutting-edge ideas. We all know that controlling the ambience in your home is not only down to the brightness and design of your lamp, but also its positioning. The kind of lighting depends on the function and design of each room. For example, a home office needs direct light which is usually supplied from a table lamp, while a bedroom may also need direct light for reading purposes as well as softer ambient lighting from either dimmable wall sconces or a pendant lamp to give a warm feeling when entering the room. Position lighting onto a favourite painting or sculpture to make it a real focal point in the room. For a whimsical look consider up-lighting for your plants so that their fanciful shadows project onto the walls and ceiling. This also applies to your garden plants: on warmer nights you can sit outside and benefit from the aesthetic beauty of your plants, softly lit-up to highlight their natural beauty.

JENSEN BEDS

Marbella Visit

by Swedish Adventurers The adventurous Jon Olsson (a skier, car enthusiast and product designer) and passionate blogger Janni Delér (a chic fashionista) have bought a house together in Marbella. Jon’s many challenges have included the likes of Alpine World Cups, X Games and Gumball 3000, to name but a few; while his stylish fiancée Janni is an award-winning travel blogger, capturing her travels in professionally edited posts across social media channels, and inspiring more than two million followers from all over the world. Their hectic lifestyle demands time to renew their energy, and their new Marbella home was always set to be a resting place – so it was important to them that they could fully relax there. To that end, they decided to approach Jensen Beds for a consultation, and the renowned brand came up with the best option to support the more sensitive zones of the body: i.e. the back, hips, shoulders and neck. As Jensen Store director Stefan Loven notes, “Everyone’s body is different, and your choice of bed has to respect this. This dynamic couple came to us as our beds offer superlative technology to give the best night’s sleep you will ever be able to experience, so we wish them all the best in their future travels and challenges – after, of course, a great night’s sleep!” Watch their YouTube video about their move to Marbella by searching for: Let’s create our dream house. Herb Gardens HEAVENLY AROMAS AND VIVID VISTAS

Whether you have a small garden, a huge garden or no garden at all, there should be no excuse for not growing your herbs. There is nothing better than picking your very own fresh herbs right in your home. Whether a big garden feature or a subtle indoor hanging garden or wall, a herb garden will not only provide you with fresh produce, but it will also brighten up your home. Think of the wonderful smells that will be emanating from your little plants. You can make a ladder planter which costs very little, have glass jars hanging with the individual herbs, make a gutter planter, grow your herbs in large tea cups with saucers or use a pallet stacked against the wall – and you can decorate and paint your planter as well. On your wall space, use some tin buckets and picture hangers and pop in the herbs. Decorative and easy to do, all these ways

are both pretty and useful. You can also use a fabric shoe holder: just place the pots with the herbs inside and there you go. Herbs which grow very well inside are: basil, bay leaves, chives, coriander, fennel, lemongrass, parsley, rosemary, spearmint, sage and thyme. All herbs can adapt to life indoors: just look for yourself which ones you want and when to plant them. Give them good drainage and light, take cuttings with care, propagate from existing plants and don’t take the larger leaves, as they are the plant’s solar panels, instead take small and larger leaves and never cut off all of them at once. I am showing you some lovely examples of how to grow a herb garden inside. With their heavenly smell, and some ingenuity in planting and growing, there is no excuse for not having them inside in your kitchen. Happy planting.

THE EPIC EIGHT

OFFERING SUPERLATIVE RENOVATION AND DESIGN Marmorin Build & Design Center

The brainchild of Marco Dalli and Timo Isoniemi, the Marmorin Build & Design Center has now been established for nearly two and a half years. Perched on the hill on Marbella’s Golden Mile overlooking the prestigious Marbella Club, the centre was set up to provide an all-encompassing property and design service – a concept that has never been seen before on the Coast. Toni Dalli & Associates, based in the Marmorin Build & Design Center, was created by the famous and now retired Italian tenor Toni Dalli, and his son, Marco. This wellknown family, with around 40 years of experience living and running successful businesses on the Coast, structured the business so that others could benefit from their vast local knowledge and key contacts within the property, design and relocation sector to those who want to invest in southern Spain. In an already crowded marketplace, clients will receive the best services and products to ensure that they will make a clever investment and seamless and successful transition into the Marbella lifestyle. The Marmorin Build & Design Center hand-picked the companies that they wanted to participate inside the showroom. This was no easy task as the companies had to offer the highest level of quality and services that complemented each other without stepping on each other’s toes – to be able to form a perfect collaboration on a full-scale renovation and design project.

Those esteemed companies are: Property Relocation Services: Toni Dalli & Associates Construction: ANS Constructions Kitchens: Safer Siematic Bathrooms: Agata Bath Design Interior Design: Nezha Kanouni Lighting: Hidalgo Monci Glazing: Marbeglass Tiles: Cerafino Tiles Audio-visuals/Domotics: TD Sat & Sound When you walk into this enormous showroom, you are greeted by design inspiration from the outset. From beautiful unique furniture items by Nezha Kanouni, cutting-edge kitchen design by Safer Siematic and contemporary bathtubs by Agata Bath Design to pioneering audio-visual technology by TD Sat & Sound… these are just a few of the many interesting displays to be viewed within the showroom. So it is safe to say that when you drop by the Marmorin Build & Design Center it is more of an experience than just a visit.

If you would like to have a chat with Marco Dalli or know more about the services of the Marmorin Build & Design Center, visit their showroom on the Golden Mile in Marbella opposite the Marbella Club or Tel. (+34) 678 648 765, or alternatively you can email marco@marmorinspain.com.

Quality and Personalisation Interview with David Millon. Villeroy & Boch.

What are some of the exciting initiatives planned for Villeroy & Boch this year, and what path will the company be taking as it looks to the future? Villeroy & Boch will continue with the same distribution policy that already stands out in the market for its select nature. This is an essential factor for us, as customer satisfaction is our prime concern. That is why we offer the best service as well as total care with our products, providing high-quality support to customers. We are increasingly dealing with premium clients in the Costa del Sol area: a more demanding customer looking for innovative and personalised elements. Villeroy & Boch has products that fulfil these high-quality requirements, including Antheus, Finion and Viclean collections, and spa and hydro-massage products. Looking to the future, Villeroy & Boch will continue to consolidate its position as a standard-bearing brand in bathrooms and wellness within the premium sector. We also provide products related to home-wear, decoration, ceramics and lighting, thus enabling clients to purchase an entire house at Villeroy & Boch. What do you believe is the secret to the success of Villeroy & Boch? There are no magic tricks for success but rather significant rewards for our efforts thanks to the innovation, discipline and historical updates that we have been committed to since 1748. These include responding to current needs and trends and launching new products for customers wanting to make affordable, high-quality investments – all of which makes Villeroy & Boch a solid benchmark in the market. In addition, we believe that our recent growth on marketing and digital platforms, as well as social networks, is another key issue in ensuring we remain a point of reference compared with our competitors. Where do you see trends developing in the bathroom sector? I believe trends are following a premium and personalised pattern. Innovation and digitalisation are important concepts that need to be integrated within products in this sector. The Antheus collection, composed of luxury materials, balanced proportions and geometric contours inspired by Art Deco, together with purist Bauhaus clarity, has created an unmistakably timeless beauty. The Finion collection provides stylish furniture, a concept of elegant lighting and

exclusive high-quality bathroom ceramics, thus becoming an oasis of relaxation and wellbeing. Viclean, following this line of innovation and quality, establishes a new standard in the design of bidet toilets. At first glance it looks like a conventional toilet but the technology has been integrated into the ceramics and not the seat. What interesting new designs are highlighted in your tableware ranges? Every year we present our tableware novelties at the Ambiente international fair in Frankfurt. This year Villeroy & Boch is presenting a wide range of interesting new products… Brindille Collection: Brindille, with its expressive colourfulness and sleek design, appeals primarily to a younger audience. The décor is at times a bold blue on brilliant white, and other times the reverse as white on blue. The result is a young concept that captures individual decorative elements of the original. Clever Baking: Baking is extremely trendy, with books, magazines and bloggers always coming up with new recipes. The new Clever Baking collection taps into this ongoing trend as the collection stands for professional baking fun at home. The products are versatile and come with surprisingly clever details: for example, the ceramic Gugelhupf mould, the star of the collection, has a measuring jug hidden inside; and there are cake plates with a base that are placed on top of each other to create fantastic étagères. This is the perfect way to showcase delicious baked treats. Modern Dining: An urban lifestyle keeps us on the move. People want to eat healthily and sustainably while on the go, just like they do at home. Villeroy & Boch has made eating breakfast or lunch out a real joy with various dishes, bowls and To Go mugs. Coloured Delight: Accessories in the 2018 trend colour… The new additions to the Coloured Delight collection will also be marketed in the Pantone “Colour of the Year”, Ultra Violet. Family-Run Building Company with

Expertise in Every Field Interview with Remco de Cock. All-Fix Renovation

Tell us about All-Fix Renovation and how you came about… All-Fix Renovation is a family business in Calahonda on the Costa del Sol, specialising in general renovations and construction. We are your contact for renovations in Marbella and elsewhere on the Costa del Sol. After being active for 30 years in the construction sector in Belgium and the Netherlands, we decided to move to the Costa del Sol. What are your particular strengths as a team? Our team is a mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm, which ensures that we deliver professional work of the highest level. We speak English, Dutch, Flemish, French and Spanish so we are able to provide our services in a language that suits you. Our specialty is total renovation. This can range from a bathroom or new tiles to the whole property. No job is too big or too small for the All-Fix team. You tell us your ideas and we can create a design and give technical advice if needed, helping you to incorporate latest or traditional trends together with our interior specialist. Tell us more about the way you work… We send our clients photos of what has been completed after every day. In this way they can follow up their projects from wherever they are. Renovation consists of many different aspects such as tiling, carpentry, painting, windows, electricity, plumbing and air-conditioning, and we have specialists for all of them. In this way we provide an amazing service when it comes to price-quality. What other areas do you work in? It doesn’t rain that much here over the year, so houses aren’t foreseen in heavy rainy conditions. Therefore when it rains heavily or rains on consecutive days many houses will suffer damp problems. This can lead to serious problems for your property, from a smell or paint that is coming loose to your walls absorbing water. The first sign of damp problems needs to be handled before it becomes worse, so we decided to handle this problem ourselves. We work either with an injection method so the water can neither travel up nor enter, or we use roofing and plinths. We visit to check out the problem and then decide which method is the best to resolve it. All-Fix Renovation Tel. (+34) 607 426 402 (Remco) all-fix@outlook.com www.all-fix.es

Behind every beautiful construction project there should be a reputable company. Atlas Group is just that…

The property market is booming here in Spain, and the Costa del Sol is at the epicentre of the recent peak in construction. With numerous cranes now on the horizon and investment opportunities cropping up left, right and centre, Marbella and the surrounding areas have become a building hub. With many construction companies having “upped the ante” to entice overseas investors, there are more and more bargain deals saturating the market that seem to be well below market price. But there is one construction company that cuts through the noise. Atlas Group’s strong reputation has been built over years of steady growth, and meticulous planning. Their portfolio of completed homes and developments showcases construction projects across the Costa del Sol and wider Spain. Having survived the property crash in 2009 and come out the other side, intact and growing, Atlas Group are a pioneer in build and service quality, as well as introducing cutting edge design and the latest technologies. The Atlas Group philosophy is strongly ingrained in their work ethic: the large team of construction specialists have a desire to continually improve and have an unlimited commitment to clients, which has given Atlas Group an enviable reputation. While many construction companies have come and gone, Atlas Group have continued to deliver consistently high quality builds over a period of more than 10 years. So, can you be sure that the cost of your cut-price build really is as simple as detailed on a billboard? Or will your new villa end up costing you more time, money and hassle with legal issues in the long run? Within a construction project, the majority of costs are the same and unavoidable. Architect fees, legal costs, staff wages and materials cannot be delivered at cut prices and remain almost the same across the board. However, cutting corners can result in a project not being completed to adequate standards, or a build far from the original plans. Even legal issues can arise from a contractor working to dash costs.

Atlas Group, on the other hand, provide a firm commitment to their clients. All builds and designs have a huge amount of hard work behind them to ensure that every detail complies with the regulations and laws. Each member of staff building your project has gone through rigorous health and safety training and is a professional at the top of their game. Costs are signed off by the technical architect and all materials ordered are in-line with the architect’s specifications. Each build is compliant with the rules and regulations of Spain. At Atlas Group, no corners are cut, no build is compromised. Behind every beautiful image of a property, there is a real company with a trustworthy and skilled team who will deliver a high-quality finished product. Atlas Group take the stress out of your project and work to turn clients’ dreams into reality. In simple terms, you are guaranteed real developments from a team you can trust. ABOUT ATLAS GROUP On the surface, Atlas Group are a construction company, but in reality they are much more than that. They provide an integrated range of property services, including construction, pool services and garden services, allowing clients to work with one company from the outset. This allows greater efficiency, saving time and money. They are one of the most established construction companies on the Costa del Sol and one of the most recognised here in the south of Spain. You have been in the industry for 20 years and completed 1,200 projects around Spain. What is Humilogic’s current position in the market? It is the leading company in Spain, dedicated to providing permanent treatments that eliminate any kind of dampness in homes, buildings, commercial outlets, etc. We work with treatments that are completely effective and have been tested and verified in northern European countries, and we have adapted them to the kinds of damp situations that exist on the Costa del Sol. We visit a client’s home and carry out a personalised diagnosis in order to ascertain the origin of the dampness and eliminate it permanently – as all the treatments are guaranteed.

What causes dampness? We live in an area with a high level of humidity, due to its proximity to the sea. In actual fact, a low percentage of humidity in the air is necessary, but problems occur when this is excessive. There are various causes in this particular area, especially in reference to construction defects. For example, these days we insulate homes more, to the point that they don’t breathe. On the other hand, in rehabilitated homes we have found that during the 1960s and 1970s there were not the same technical solutions preventing dampness that exist now.

23/2/18 17:16

What is your key area of expertise? On the Costa del Sol we are the only company with its headquarters in Marbella specialising in structural anti-damp treatments. Over the years we have selected the top manufacturers of anti-damp products in Europe. They have shown their confidence in Humilogic and we are their only authorised appliers in the whole of Andalucía. Are your treatments permanent? Humilogic only works on a home once. We don’t return because our treatments are totally permanent. They are for 10 to 30 years, depending on the treatment carried out. What is the most complicated issue in your work? I like that question. Interestingly, my main hurdle is not when I find a serious dampness hazard in a home that is difficult to resolve – that’s no problem. The main issue is that a client finds it hard to believe there is in fact a solution to the problem they have with dampness in their home. In many cases, they have tried other companies without success and they’re tired of wasting money. In these cases, we offer them the opportunity of visiting other Humilogic clients who have had a similar problem, years ago, and for whom the dampness has not re-appeared. Or I give them a list of contact numbers so they can call and ask them directly about their experience with Humilogic – it’s that simple.

What are clients’ most common issues when they contact you? Most of the calls we receive are for bad smells and for mould on the walls. Construction materials age much quicker but the most serious problem for those living in a home with dampness is health – especially for children and elderly people. Are your clients essentially home owners? Yes, but we also work with professionals in the sector: designers, architects, builders, real estate agencies, etc. This is to ensure that, before any rehabilitation or construction, they don’t have problems with dampness.

What would you recommend to any of our readers who have a dampness problem in their home? My advice to any readers who are living in a damp space would be to not let too much time pass without resolving the problem, because it is harmful to their health. They face the risk of suffering allergies, asthma, respiratory problems, rheumatism or problems in their joints. Humilogic Ricardo Soriano 28, Edif. Andalucía, Ofic. Nº 4, Marbella Tel. Fairs & Exhibitions

Cosmopolitan Innovation in Paris

Noting that the global interior industry had grown by two per cent over the past year, the organisers of Maison & Objet said this newfound momentum had been confirmed during the January edition of the Paris exhibition. “French buyers, whose numbers have been growing steadily for the past four editions, thronged the halls with renewed interest. The fair is also seeing increasingly more visitors hailing from outside the E.U., with the highest growth rates for China, the USA and Russia.” According to Philippe Brocart, managing director of SAFI, the company that organises Maison & Objet, “Nine out of 10 visitors are primarily looking for new products. Other motivations include the chance to discover tomorrow’s trends and meeting new suppliers.” Covering a broad selection of quality interior products, Maison & Objet has made novelty a driving force. Over the five days of the fair, French and international retailers and specifiers discovered the new products and latest collections of 3,000 brands from 63 countries, with almost one-third of exhibitors being newcomers. MOM (Maison & Objet & More), an online service launched one year ago to complement the physical event, is also gaining an increasingly wide audience, offering “innovative concept and inspiring content… with a digital platform that keeps the community engaged all year round. The January theme at the exhibition’s The Inspirations Space was “Show Room”, centred on a new generation of

hyper-connected and hyper-informed consumers. “Reclaiming control, they are establishing their status as an inescapable partner for brands. With the dawn of aestheticism on social networks, the advent of Instagram and the rule of composition, consumers are becoming trend-setters themselves, fully-fledged influencers. They share their finds with their communities, revealing themselves, or flaunting themselves in some cases, making commitments and voicing opinions.” The “Designer of the Year” was Cecilie Manz, who had chosen to display on a stage “a selection of small objects, and functional and unostentatious accessories, which embodied the concept of Hygge, a Scandinavian way of life which blurs the distinction between comfortable and comforting”. The latest edition of the fair also chose to honour Italian design for its “Rising Talents Awards” event. Six sponsors, all prominent figures from the design industry (Andrea Branzi, Piero Lissoni and Luca Nichetto, art director Giulio Cappellini, gallery-owner and contemporary design guru Rossana Orlandi and iconic fashion designer Rosita Missoni), were asked to choose one talent each, and they hand-picked “the most promising talents that Italy has to offer… Six names you are bound to hear again in the future: Federica Biasi, Antonio Facco, Marco Lavit Nicora, Kensaku Oshiro, Federico Peri and Guglielmo Poletti. www.maison-objet.com

Dynamic Trends in Cologne

Around 125,000 visitors attended the 2018 IMM Cologne, a leading annual showcase of industry trends and new launches that provides a key platform for international business. Organisers reported that the event had attracted greater numbers of trade visitors from Europe and Asia, which are the number one export markets for the German and European furniture industries. “Each year, the trade fair provides the industry with vital momentum for sales in decisive export markets around the world” said Gerald Böse, president and CEO of Koelnmesse. In addition to the event’s strong international profile on all days of the trade fair, exhibitors also rated the quality of the visitors as “excellent”. Specialist retailers and high-profile international visitors from the furnishings trade and interior design business were recorded as visitors, with many of them coming from the global top 30 chains. They were joined at IMM Cologne by decision-makers from the major online platforms and international department stores, while major industry players in online retail used the event intensively for their business. In addition to the product showcases, “Das Haus” (a walk-in simulation of a home designed by Lucie Koldova) was once again one of the trade fair highlights, with light playing a key role in the installation. Lighting, bathrooms and the smart home were the focus topics for this edition of the fair, and particular emphasis was placed on them in the Pure Architects concept hall. “By examining these themes, the 360-degree interiors show addressed three crucial future issues that are set to be increasingly important in interior design,” concluded the organisers. www.imm-cologne.com

Explosion of

Colour and Creativity in Madrid

The six-week long Casa Decor habitat, luxury and lifestyle event in Madrid was moved forward from its customary annual date in mid-spring, with the 2018 edition beginning in January and continuing until 25 March. This year’s venue is the Francisco de Rojas 2 building in Madrid, built between 1900 and 1903 by Catalan architect Antonio Farrés Aymerich. Featuring a “Catalan modernism” style, the building is highlighted by 55 metres of façade and 68 balcony-designed windows. A total of 67 spaces have been taken over by 100 decorators and interior design studios from throughout Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Málaga, Murcia, Córdoba, Granada and Toledo. One of the key themes of this year’s event is “Arts & Crafts”, with an artisanal spirit and traditional manufacturing processes showcased around the building. There is also a philanthropic element to Casa Decor, with the invited guest Entreculturas, an organisation that promotes education programmes for children in areas of conflict. www.casadecor.es

Gourmet Recipes

Creating Imaginative CULINARY DELICACIES

THIS ISSUE HELLE BARLEBO FROM CHILI GOURMET CATERING REVEALS THE SECRETS OF HOW TO PREPARE TWO OF HER EXQUISITE SPECIALITIES: MANGO CHAMPAGNE SORBET AND TUNA MOUSSE.

MANGO CHAMPAGNE SORBET (4 servings) ½ bottle of good Spanish cava 1 dl. cane sugar 1 dl. freshly squeezed lime juice ½ dl. water 2 whole dried star anise 1 mango in cubes Fresh mint leaves This is the basic recipe of one of my most popular secrets. It’s always a hit when I have guests at home or when I’m out on caterings. The sorbet is very refreshing, either as a dessert or as a fresh appetiser between the starter and main course, for the gourmet menu. Heat the water, cane sugar and star anise in a pan, just until it boils and the cane sugar is melted, and turn off the heat. Add the freshly made lime juice and leave to cool off in the refrigerator for at least one hour. If you are running late, you can cheat and put it in the freezer as well. Take the star anise out of your homemade “sauer” and blend the liquid with the mango cubes. Put the mango-sauer in the freezer and stir it regularly during the first couple of hours to avoid too many lumps. Remember that bottled lime juice is just a no-go and not worth it! When the mango-sauer is completely frozen and you are ready for serving, pour it back into the blender. With caution, gradually add half a bottle of cava while the sorbet is blended at the lowest speed. Then add more cava till the sorbet is as liquid or as rich as you want it. Serve in sugar-glazed champagne glasses. Dip the top of the glasses in lime juice and after in white sugar, pour the mango sorbet and decorate with fresh mint leaves on top. Champagne sorbet can be made with a great variety of berries and fruits, depending on your taste. Personally, I also prefer to add a little bit of dark Caribbean rum in mine, but that’s a completely different cocktail story, from overseas.

TUNA MOUSSE (6 servings) 1 glass of tuna in oil 2 pieces of gelatin Juice from ½ lemon 2 shallots 1 dl. sour cream 1 dl. mayo Salt & fresh grinded pepper Freshly chopped chives and lemon slices for serving Soak the gelatin in cold water for two minutes and then filter away the water. Heat the gelatin until it melts and then mix in the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mix mayo, sour cream and spices together in a bowl. Chop the scallops and filter the excess oil from the tuna. Mix everything together, pour it into a glass and leave it in the refrigerator for at least four hours. The tuna mousse is a good basic recipe that can be served in countless ways. Very suitable for canapÊs, on biscuits topped with cress or as small delicious bites on homemade bread with olives and capers. Also, as filling in sandwiches with delicious crispy lettuce and cherry tomatoes or in wraps filled with avocado, corn and peppers. Chili Gourmet by Helle Barlebo Tel. WINE NOTES

The Rebirth of a Classic Wine Region By Andrew J Linn

It is interesting to note through history how much of Europe’s wine production was controlled by monasteries and other religious institutions. In France, Italy and Spain the land on which vines were grown usually belonged to the Church, and the reason cannot just have been to ensure a steady supply of communion wine, as the clerics maintained, since the quantities produced were more than all the thirstiest communicants in the land could gulp down. Perhaps justifiably, the church-owned estates in Spain were confiscated from the Carthusian monks in 1835 and distributed among local smallholders. Spain’s most expensive historically-religious wine comes from a region that 15 years ago was scarcely known outside Spain. Priorato owes its name to the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei, who ruled over seven villages in the area. And that’s about it. Priorat (the Catalan name) has no cities; Falset, with around 2,500 inhabitants, is the largest village, and most of Priorato’s vineyards are near the villages of Gratallops and Porrera. The region is so small that it is hard to find on a map, and a lot more homework is required to get there. However, it is well worth a visit, boasting Spain’s most spectacular scenic backdrops, and the vines are cultivated on steep terraces where machines can only be used on a very limited basis. These vines produce a pitiful grape yield, so the resulting wine tends to be concentrated, heavy in alcohol and deep in colour – indeed, this is one of the attractions for Priorato fans. And it comes as no surprise to learn that, owing to the labour-intensive cultivation and harvesting methods, the wine comes at a price that may not suit every pocket. The red grape variety is invariably the original Garnacha with some Cariñena and occasionally Cabernet Sauvignon. There is hardly any white wine, barely six per cent of the total, and when you find it the grapes will be mainly Garnacha Blanca, and occasionally Macabeo and Pedro Ximénez The resurrection of winemaking in Priorato began in 1979 when three of Spain’s leading young winemakers decided the region was ripe for a makeover. Having planted new vines and pooled the grapes harvested for the first three vintages in a Gratallops bodega, they subsequently went off to their individual wineries and from 1992 made wine under their own labels. In 2000 the region was classified in the second highest category authorised

in Spain, DOCa (or DOQ), on the same level as La Rioja. Since then the vineyard surface has been continuously expanding. At the turn of the millennium there were 1,000 hectares of vineyards, and currently there are close to 1,800. The Prioratos made by those first pioneers all have names beginning with “Clos...” Clos Mogador was Barbier’s own label. Clos Martinet belonged to José Luis Pérez, and Clos de l’Obac to the local mayor, while Clos Erasmus is the creation of Daphne Glorian of Alvaro Palacios, maker of L’Ermita. Possibly the most representative wines to be found in the area come from the Mas d’en Gil bodega, founded in the 19th century by Francesc Gil, and at that time only selling wine in bulk. When the Rovira Carbonell family took over in 1998, it was with the intention of launching a range of wines under the original Mas d’en Gil label. Since 2008, Marta Rovira has been in charge, supported by her older sister Pilar and her father Pere. Based on a team that combines local roots with international ones, Mas d’en Gil’s raison d être involves developing a model based on the traditions of making great classic wines from this ancient, demanding and utterly rewarding region From this particular stable, Bellmunt Negre and Belmont Blanc are perfect examples of “Vi de Vila” wines produced within the municipal boundaries, both at around €13-€15. Coma Vella (€25) comes from the oldest vineyard in the Vall de la Coma; and Coma Alta (€25) is a lively white wine with great subtlety, and worth the price. The Clos Fontà range uses grapes from the oldest vines on the original estate, at around €50 and as good an example of Priorato winemaking skills as you will ever be fortunate enough to drink. The Coma Blanca white is not easy to find, and costs around €40; made from Garnacha and Macabeo, it is referred to as a white wine that can be drunk after red. The granddaddy of them all is the Gran Buig, made only during exceptional vintages, and rated as one of Spain’s best wines. If anyone still has stock of the 2004, it will cost around €280, and you will never forget the experience. There is also Nus vi Dolç, a sweet red wine aimed at recovering the old Priorat tradition of making sweet red wines with Grenache grapes (€25 the half bottle.) CHILDREN’S CORNER

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GROWING UP... PREPARING CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN

When to Start Getting into Sports By Elena Gatsenko

Some say it is after the age of five – there is nothing to do in professional sports. Others think a child does not need so much exercise until he/she is seven and chooses a kind of sports to his/her liking. So who is right? Both opinions are correct. Let me explain. There is a theory that the first three years of life are the most important. It is a time when fundamental character traits and preferences are shaped. What happens later on is only adjustment or development of one’s character and personality. At the age of one (give or take a couple of months) a child starts walking, learning about the world actively and enjoying movement. In the first years of life the child does not distinguish between good and bad, hard and easy. It is only interesting or boring. And it is very boring without movement. Think about a trip to a restaurant, a long drive in a car seat or a queue in an outpatient clinic.

Unlike adults, children want and love to run, jump and climb. It doesn’t mean you should sign up your child for a professional sports class as soon as he/she turns three. Every child is unique. Some like to work on their somersault or a flip for hours; others would endure it for two weeks and go back to their toy blocks. Professional sport is non-stop hard work and even a pain. And I don’t mean injuries; but, for instance, stretches in rhythmic gymnastics. If you start too early, it may cause resentment and resistance. So what can you do? General physical exercises… best of all while playing. How does it happen in El Campanario? Regular daily physical exercises and active games… Mini-warm-up every 15-20 minutes... Dancing breaks… finger exercises. Hour-long sports lessons are important and needed. They are essentially different from usual running on the playground or a long walk in the park. For instance,

158 MARCH & APRIL 2018

during such lessons children do exercises for coordination, bracing, endurance and stretches. They not only strengthen their body but develop their mind too. Ask an untrained three-year-old to walk backwards. He/ she won’t be able to do that. Throw or roll a ball on the floor – and the child won’t be able to catch it and throw it back to you on the first try. But just after a month of exercises you will see amazing results. What can you do at home? For children under one year, learn simple massage techniques and exercises for a child and a mother – pull-ups, flips, “bicycle” exercises. Do it 40-60 minutes after a meal at the earliest when the child is awake and cheerful. Once he/she turns one-year-old, play ball – roll it on the floor with your hands towards your baby and ask him/ her to push it back to you. Try to do short morning exercises or squatting, rocking and turning to funny songs. Walk and jump as little bears, ducks or frogs. Do 10 squats together. It will be useful for mothers too. And find general physical exercises course for children over two to three years old. What is the difference between physical training and baby fitness? Apart from exercises there are also active games with rules which teach children to work as a team, to interact with other children, to develop leadership skills. For instance, we have regular physical training lessons, and for children over four to five years old properly trained and interested in sports we offer specialised types of physical activity like football, lawn tennis and dancing. To make lessons more interesting, we hold mini-competitions and open days, invite world-class adult sportsmen who give master classes, and arrange family competitions where children participate together with their parents. By the time your child has to go to school, he/she will be physically and mentally ready for real achievements and a career in sports or will simply keep enjoying physical activity for the rest of his/her life. Quitting Smoking… THE GOOD NEWS AND THE BAD By Rachel Garrod

So how have you been doing with your new year’s resolutions? Were you successful with dry January, or not really your thing? How about stopping smoking? We all know that stopping smoking is one of the most beneficial things we can do for our health. From cutting the risk of lung disease, heart problems, high blood pressure and strokes to even reducing pain – stopping smoking really makes a difference. For many years the expected wisdom has been that, although quitting entirely is best, cutting down can also help reduce your risk of many conditions. Well the good news is, we know that this is the case for the chances of contracting lung cancer, but unfortunately the bad news is that even smoking just one cigarette a day has greater health implications than originally thought. A new study published in the BMJ has shown that for men smoking just one cigarette a day there is a whopping 48 per cent increase in the risk of heart disease compared to

never-smokers and a 25 per cent greater risk for stroke. For women the results are even worse at 57 and 31 per cent, respectively. This systematic review was one of the largest of its kind and looked at data from over 21 countries and included around seven million people. The results persisted even after the authors accounted for factors such as age, physical activity, cholesterol levels, body mass and other associated variables. But don’t despair: if you are struggling with quitting smoking there is help available. Nicotine patches, gum and medications such as Zyban are all proven to help quit for good. E-cigarettes, although not harm-free, have fewer carcinogens than cigarettes and may help to stop smoking entirely. Here in Marbella I run a Stop Smoking programme using the herbal remedy Cytisine. This combined with behaviour therapy support and coaching increases your chances of stopping smoking up to five times compared with will power alone. So, if you’re looking to quit for good, why not reach out and get some help?

E-SMOKING DEBATE... AND EASING PHANTOM SOUNDS Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

E-CIGARETTES MAY HELP SOME SMOKERS A new study is suggesting that smokers who are willing to use e-cigarettes tend to smoke less and have increased quit attempts. As e-cigarettes become more popular, fewer people are taking up smoking traditional cigarettes. However, there is debate whether this electronic nicotine delivery system can help people quit smoking altogether. “Combustible cigarettes are the most harmful form of nicotine delivery. Alternative delivery of nicotine through e-cigarettes could significantly reduce harm and the risks of cancer and other diseases to smokers,” said Matthew Carpenter, PhD, who is a tobacco control and addiction expert at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the United States. Carpenter and his team evaluated e-cigarettes in terms of usage, product preference, changes in smoking behaviours and nicotine exposure. The study included 68 smokers and 46 were randomised to use e-cigarettes as much as they wanted, and 22 were randomised to a control group. Those in the e-cigarette group were given a device with either high or low doses of nicotine. Everyone was followed over a period of four months. The study was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention and is one of the few randomised studies to examine the effects of e-cigarettes and quit attempts. The results showed that, when smokers were given e-cigarettes without any accompanying instructions or requirements for use, uptake was strong and many participants went on to purchase their own e-cigarettes. This suggests that e-cigarettes might give smokers a suitable alternative to combustible cigarettes. Those who used e-cigarettes smoked less and were more likely to quit smoking, as compared to those in the control group. Of the two e-cigarette models used in the study, the more powerful device, with a higher dose of nicotine, showed stronger outcomes. People using ecigarettes throughout the study smoked an average of 37 per cent fewer cigarettes, showing a positive effect when making the switch and potentially serving as a tool to help smokers quit. A NEW WAY OF TREATING TINNITUS A team of scientists has now come up with an experimental device that may quiet the phantom noises of tinnitus sufferers. It is now possible to combat ringing in the ears in a whole new way by generating two kinds of specially timed pulses. With this approach, one of the pulses is delivered through earphones and the other through electrodes placed on the skin of the face or neck. Millions of people hear ringing in their ears (tinnitus) and there have never been any really effective treatments. However, an American team from the University of Michigan is reporting promising results of the first animal tests and a clinical trial with 20 human tinnitus patients. The device uses precisely timed sounds and weak electrical pulses that activate touch-sensitive nerves. This steers damaged nerve cells back to normal activity. Human participants reported, that after four weeks of daily use of the device, the loudness of phantom sounds decreased and their tinnitus-

related quality of life improved. A sham “treatment” using just sounds did not produce such effects. “The brain, and specifically the region of the brainstem called the dorsal cochlear nucleus, is the root of tinnitus,” said researcher Susan Shore, PhD, who is a Medical School professor at the University of Michigan. “When the main neurons in this region, called fusiform cells, become hyperactive and synchronise with one another, the phantom signal is transmitted into other centres where perception occurs.” This new approach is called targeted bimodal auditory-somatosensory stimulation. The device plays a sound into the ears, alternating it with precisely timed, mild electrical pulses delivered to the cheek or neck. This sets off a process called stimulus-timing dependent plasticity (STDP). The approach aims to re-set the activity of fusiform cells, which normally help our brains receive and process both sounds and sensations such as touch or vibration.

Cutting-Edge “New Spain” Design Concept FOR MADRID HOTEL

164 MARCH & APRIL 2018

Travel HL56.indd 164

22/2/18 17:53

It has been described as the most unconventional hotel in Madrid and has received several glowing media testimonials for its conceptual art and design. The Daily Telegraph newspaper, for example, included Barceló Torre de Madrid in its “The Coolest Design Hotel in Madrid” list, while other specialist publications have rated it among the “most Instagramable” hotels in the world. These plaudits can be traced to the hotel’s collaboration with top Spanish designer Jaime Hayón, who created a sophisticated and innovative aesthetic based on the concept of “New Spain” and incorporating cultural synergies from the international hotel panorama – including London, Paris and New York. Overlooking the capital city’s Plaza de España, Gran Vía and Calle Princesa, the hotel is full of art and symbolism, highlighted by a bear with a gold top hat that welcomes clients in the lobby and is a symbol of the city, and other Hayón touches that mix surrealism, elegance and humour. The walls are covered in a diverse array of classic folkloric photographs from around Spain, showcased in a contemporary style. The hotel comprises 256 designer rooms, including luxury suites with private terraces offering stunning city views, and a wellness centre with its own bold design ambience, and it offers various “experience initiatives” and activities such as the “Foodie Social Club” and “The Locals”, in which visitors can discover more about Madrid in the company of “the coolest local personalities”. Bespoke Design and Craftsmanship AT THE HOME OF ROLLS-ROYCE

22/2/18 17:55

In 2017 Rolls-Royce marked its 114th year as one of the world’s most iconic luxury brands, and in early 2018 the venerable British car manufacturer has been looking back on a period in its history that “elevated Bespoke to unprecedented new levels”. Indeed, as the company notes, “Today, almost every motor car that leaves the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood (England), is Bespoke.” To mark that significant development, Rolls-Royce offered “a snapshot of some of the finest examples of Bespoke design and craftsmanship to be completed by the luxury house over the past 12 months”. Sweptail: This “automotive equivalent of haute couture” draws on the lineage of 1920s and 1930s Rolls-Royce motor cars. The client’s vision was for a coachbuilt two-seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof. New Phantom and The Gallery: At the heart of the new Phantom’s design aesthetic is The Gallery, a contemporary and luxury reinterpretation of a motor car’s dashboard and instrument panel – described as “an art gallery on wheels”. Dawn and Wraith at Porto Cervo: Two motor cars were created in honour of the Rolls-Royce Summer Studio in Porto Cervo (Sardinia), a Dawn drophead coupé and a Wraith Black Badge being commissioned “to encapsulate the essence of this beguiling island”. Dawn adopted a nautical theme, “evoking emotions of a languid Mediterranean sojourn”; while the Porto Cervo Wraith “playfully emulates Sardinia’s night-time ambience”. Spirit of Calligraphy Ghost: A special one-off commission unveiled in Dubai, the Spirit of Calligraphy Ghost draws its design inspiration from the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy. “Words are harmoniously moulded into shapes, creating a unique effect where texts and images become one.” Ghost Elegance: Commissioned for an individual collector, the Ghost Elegance became the first motor car to be finished in a paint infused with diamonds. Named “Diamond Stardust”, the paint incorporates 1,000 diamonds crushed to form a very fine powder. Dawn in Fuxia: In 2017, U.S. collector Michael Fux was presented with his 10th Bespoke model from Rolls-Royce. Following a visit to Pebble Beach in 2016, where he collected a cluster of eye-catching fuchsia petals, he challenged the team at Goodwood with a commission to bring a striking new colour, and they created the “Dawn in Fuxia”, reserved exclusively for Fux to use. Dawn B50 for Hotel Byblos: In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez, Rolls-Royce revealed the Dawn B50, a motor car “inspired by the warmth and vibrancy of the Côte d’Azur”. Silver Dawn Tribute: Prominently displayed at the home of Rolls-Royce is a rare 1952 Silver Dawn, one of very few ever made. It was sold new to a customer in Canada, and in 2017 a commission was received for a Dawn to pay homage to the car during its 65th anniversary year. Finished in two-tone Midnight Sapphire and Jubilee Silver, the new Dawn closely emulates the original finishes of the 1952 motor car. South Korean Inspiration: Unveiled at the British Embassy in Seoul, the Bespoke Collection for Korea “embraced the aesthetic heritage of South Korea with a contemporary flare”. The Ghost Seoul Edition reflects colours that grace the country’s Taegukgi national flag, finished in bright Andalucian White with a twin coachline in Cobalto Blue and Mugello Red – together with a hand-painted Bespoke motif that captures the silhouette of the iconic Namsan Seoul Tower.

Digital Displays of Moving Image Art NIIO AT TD SAT & SOUND

Art lovers wanting to manage moving images across diverse interior spaces can use the Niio cloud-based software platform for a diverse range of digital options. Available on the Costa del Sol from TD Sat & Sound – market leaders in home automation and audio/ visual system integration – Niio enables a global network of leading artists, galleries, libraries and institutions to self-publish media art-forms, which can then be viewed on connected display devices anywhere in the world. Artists create their work with digital tools (“born digital” artwork) in formats from 4K video, film, interactive, code-based and gifs to VR/AR works. Together with its ArtPlayer and Remote Management Tools, Niio can transform any screen or projector into a 4K/60fps, looping professional art player supporting single and multi-channel works. The works are concepted and developed right from the beginning as “screen-based” digital works: i.e. not paintings, drawings, etc. that have been created in one format and then “digitised” at a later date to show on a screen. Niio is able to transform both public and private spaces instantly, integrating moving image art (one screen or many) into any environment. On the professional side, the platform is used by owners of commercial spaces, public spaces, hospitality establishments, hotels and hospitals “to help them find unique solutions for their environments”. Those who already own or manage a library or collection of moving image art ( for example, artists, collectors, museums and libraries) are able to use Niio’s tools for the management, distribution and display of their artworks. In some cases, artists include original sound or music within their artworks but Niio does not directly “interact” with external sound sources such as Spotify and Pandora. Nevertheless, Niio users can play music separately in the background while displaying digital art. Customers have the choice of purchasing from the platform or leasing work via a monthly subscription plan. TD Sat & Sound C/ Francisco Lomeña Moreno 6, Edif. EXPERT ADVICE

Spanish Non-Resident Income Tax Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

This issue we are going to explain what Spanish tax form 210, the Non-Resident Income Tax, is and how it directly affects all those taxpayers who do not reside – physically or physically speaking – in Spanish territory. It is important to understand what tax form 210 is and if you are obliged to submit it. It is an annual tax levied on the income of non-resident natural persons and on companies that have been established in Spain. Before talking about who is obliged to submit it and who is not, let us distinguish between tax residents and nonresidents in Spain. Those persons who remain more than 183 days during the year within the Spanish territory, or those who have the nucleus of their economic activity within Spain, are considered residents in Spain. If you are considered a tax resident in Spain, you will not have to face the IRNR (Non-Resident Income Tax), but instead the rest of the tax obligations for residents. There are three cases in which a person is not considered a tax resident in Spain: 1. As we mentioned above, if a person resides for more than 183 days in Spain, the Spanish tax office considers that it is the habitual residence of the individual, and therefore such persons must pay their taxes in Spain. However, keep in mind that, if you do not exceed this limit, you may not be considered a tax resident. 2. If you do not reside for more than 183 days in Spain and if the main turnover of your business is not in Spain, but in another country, then, even if you have a business in the Spanish territory, you will not be considered a tax resident, since, as stated above, this is not your main income source. 3. The third assumption has to do with your marital situation. Non-residents are legally separated from any spouse or children (as long as they are minors) living in Spain; if such family

members depend on that person and also have their habitual residence within the Spanish territory, then the person may not be a non-resident. Now that the previous point about tax residents and non-residents has been clarified, let us also clarify that the mere fact of living outside of Spain does not mean that you are not obliged to present Model 210. On the contrary, the following persons are obliged to present Model 210, even when residing outside Spain: 1. Those individuals, both natural and legal, who, even without residing in Spain, obtain income here and do not pay the income tax – for example, those who own real estate in Spain and earn income by renting it. 2. A natural person who resides for reasons of work in Spanish territory, but has the nationality of another country, such as a diplomat or official of another country. 3. Those entities that are in a special tax regime of income attribution in a foreign country. It is also important to note that the rates of Income Tax of Non-Residents were changed in the last tax reform. So what was the result? If you are a resident of a country in the European Union, Norway or Iceland, you are lucky, as these tax rates were lowered to 19 per cent. For other citizens or entities of other countries, the IRNR tax rate is 24 per cent. It should be noted that this Non-Resident Income Tax may vary depending on the economic activity on which it is levied. If you want to check for yourself, the tax office’s website details IRNR rates for the presentation of tax form 210. However, the best course of action, in order to submit the IRNR tax form 210 correctly, is to consult expert tax advisors who know the rules in depth, and can review your submission so as to help you avoid mistakes.
