Editorial For many of us spring cleaning is a bit like New Year resolutions. We sheepishly know there are aspects of our lives we should be paying attention to and responsibilities we should be taking care of all 12 months of the year, but somehow we don’t find the time - or they just don’t get done. Come 31 December, we spring into action and vow to take action in January. The same with spring cleaning. We know we should be maintaining a sense of order in our homes throughout the year but it’s not always possible - because of other commitments or more important priorities. Once March arrives, the cold weather starts to ease and we shake off our semi-dormant inaction underneath a blanket on the sofa watching winter sports, we once again become more motivated for (overdue) action. Of course it helps (or shames) us that around this time we also tend to be inundated by press articles, TV programs, YouTube videos and podcasts about how to keep things tidy in five easy steps. Coming into last year the cool buzzword gaining adherents was “döstädning”. As explained in Margaret Magnusson’s “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning”, the concept advocates a proactive and conscientious disposal of possessions before death, to liberate relatives from any awkward decisions about what to save and what to clear out. Starting to create an even greater media frenzy around the same time was Japan’s Marie “Queen of the Clean” Condo, who uses a Netflix show based on her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” - to encourage people to de-clutter their homes. Not that everyone is impressed. Decrying the “susceptibility of Americans to plain good sense if it can be infused with a quasi-mystical ‘oriental aura’”, University of Oklahoma philosophy professor Amy Olberding wrote, “We are awash in stuff, and apparently so joyless that the promise of joy through house-cleaning appeals to us. The cultural fascination sparked by Kondo strikes me as deeply disordered… Folding clothes as an organisational strategy is boring. But folding clothes as a mystically infused plan of life is alluring. It’s not about the clothes. It’s about everything, all at once.” A more positive view is expressed by Libby Sander, assistant professor of organisational behaviour at Bond University in Australia, who observed in an article published by The Conversation, “…there is good reason to get on board, whether it’s via the KonMari method, or just having a good clear-out. Clutter can affect our anxiety levels, sleep, and ability to focus. It can also make us less productive, triggering coping and avoiding strategies that make us more likely to snack on junk and watch TV shows (including ones about other people decluttering their lives).” Obviously, the point of these conceptual trends is essentially to get rid of unnecessary items rather than pack them away, and certainly not all our worldly possessions. Nor to immerse ourselves in a Zen experience… So, with that more prosaic thought in mind, this issue we have put together a special section on “Shelving & Storage” that offers valuable ideas and products for de-cluttering homes. Plus, of course, our comprehensive coverage of other Décor & Design trends that can be incorporated into our living spaces this spring.

Dining Fine Your dining table and chairs are where your family and friends meet and enjoy a meal together, so this area plays an important part in the home. The correct table size and chair height are necessary factors to consider to accommodate diners comfortably. Extendible tables are a great way to adapt for specific occasions, and you should make sure your dining chairs allow for a 21-centimetre gap for leg room between the top of the chair and the bottom of the table top. 36 MARCH & APRIL 2019

WALLS THAT

Woo Us Wallpapers have had their ups and downs in popularity, but since the social media revolution they have been very much in favour - splashing bold prints onto statement walls and making them hugely “Insta-genic”. Wallpapers have come on leaps in bounds in terms of textures and finishes and, of course, with the endless creative ideas that designers come up with to adorn them. We take a look at some new collections… 44 MARCH & APRIL 2019

LIGHTING No matter how beautiful your room is, lighting can destroy its aesthetic in a heartbeat if the fixtures are wrong. Whether you want your lighting to make a bold statement with a huge chandelier or sculptural shade, or go for something more understated and subtler, choosing lighting takes careful consideration as it sets the tone of the room. During the spring months, especially, outdoor lighting is also an important factor when we decide to spend our evenings enjoying the patio or garden. Here are some interesting ideas… Tom Dixon’s Cut lighting collection hypnotises with its light reflections through a diamond-shaped prism. Tom Dixon is available from Femont Galvan situated in the Marbella Club (www.femontgalvan.com), Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www. siestainteriordesign.com) and Acoola Decor in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola-decor.eu).

Bedrooms

The Beloved

Bedroom As we spend a third of our lives asleep, our bedroom is a hugely important area of the home! Sumptuous bed linen, a comfortable bed that suits your body’s requirements and good storage solutions to keep the room as clutter-free as possible are just some of the staples for a well-thought-out bedroom. Light control in the form of window solutions such as curtains and blinds also need to be well-considered to block out sunlight and create a stylish aesthetic. Correct lighting fixtures that offer directional light for night reading and dimmable ambient light to create a restful atmosphere are another important factor.

The sophisticated Prestige Jensen Aqtive II bed looks like a continental divan set when not in use. It is dual-sprung with spring systems in both the reversible mattress and base, and is built for stability. There is a remote control, with step-free control of the head and foot ends of the bed powered almost in silence. Jensen is situated in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana 23 in Nueva AndalucĂa (www.jensenstore.com).

BUILDING “GREEN CITIES” A GROWING TREND An inaugural conference organised by Discesur on “Large-Format Ceramics, Ventilated Façades and Thermal Comfort” highlighted a trend in new architecture that focuses on the conviction that people’s key essence “tends towards nature”. Organised by Discesur – part of the Saint-Gobain Group, a company leader in the marketing of cladding, flooring and kitchen and bathroom equipment – the event was launched with the objective of responding to growing demands for sustainability and a commitment to and awareness of nature. Participants in the conference highlighted the fact that vertical gardens, vegetation and sustainable buildings are increasingly finding a place among bricks and mortar in the current urban landscape. Landscaper Isabel Alguacil, from Paisaje Libre, affirmed this commitment and its advantages in her presentation. First of all, she noted, the environmental benefits were quantifiable, including ecological balance, CO2 absorption, reduction in acoustic levels, increase in flora and fauna biodiversity, and reduction in buildings’ high temperature. Second were the sociological benefits, as common green areas facilitated an increase in interaction and relaxation, and reduced stress produced by a frenetic city pace. And third: the aesthetic. As an example, she cited Madrid city, which has been focusing more and more on green façades, sustainable roofs, green infrastructures, urban gardens, and microclimates with water or sustainable drainage.

ARCHITECTS AWARD FOR TENERIFE VILLAS PROJECT Abama Luxury Residences’ Bellevue villas have been honoured with the inaugural Manuel de Oraá and Arcocha Architecture Award for “best project of the last decade” in the “new housing” category presented by the Association of Architects in Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro (COACTFE). Jointly designed by Virgilio Gutiérrez Herreros and Eustaquio Martínez studios, the project was conceived to highlight the “contemporary and ecological aspects of what is undoubtedly the most exclusive residential estate in the Canary Islands: Abama Resort, in Guía de Isora.” COACTFE especially valued how this eight single-home complex “moved away from a traditional approach, characterised by white construction minimalism, giving prominence to the gardens, terraces and shaded spaces, and thus contributing to the creation of environments closely associated with modern movements of the 1960s”.

Sophisticated Sound ACCENTUATED BY CRAFTED COLOUR IMAGERY

Bang & Olufsen’s classic approach of creating a seamless relationship between sound, image and design is highlighted in the iconic brand’s Beolab 50 and Beovision Eclipse models released towards the end of last year. The elegant “Piano Black” colourway has been used to give the TV and loudspeaker “empowerment, glamour and mystery”. A dynamic, balanced glossy surface and distinct details have been added to the Beolab 50. As Bang & Olufsen describe it, “At first glance, hundreds of tiny polished, aluminium dots on the front give Beolab 50 a deeper, almost layered visual expression, reflecting the light. The distance between the dots is chosen to give a notion of the magic going on behind the front, where the speaker drivers are laid out to create the best possible control of the sound. The efficient cooling plates are visually extended into the baffles, to create both a functional as well as an attractive surface treatment. Warm oak lamellas add to its slender, insisting appearance, giving it a contemporary, yet classic look.” Meanwhile, the futuristic Beovision Eclipse features 4K HDR OLED screen technology, with the thin black screen accompanied by a new black front cover and sound centre, “stressing that the TV is greater than the sum of its parts and designed to integrate exquisitely with your lifestyle”. The Beovision Eclipse TV connects wirelessly with up to eight speakers. To compliment the colourway, and “in a play with gravity”, designer Torsten Valeur has created a new Beovision Eclipse floor stand that takes up little footprint on the floor and consists of an aluminium tube in either silver or brass-toned aluminium with a black painted floor plate and steel arm. Bang & Olufsen is available from Illusion in Urb. Guadalcántara (www.e-illusion.es).

Innovative, high-quality and powerful Hi-Fi products are being developed again and, in addition to its expertise in imaging devices, Loewe is committed to continuing to develop its audio sector in the future and expand its range of home entertainment systems. Loewe is a pioneering premium brand when it comes to excelling equally in the

two disciplines of audio and visual technology. Its aim is to “stimulate the senses and arouse emotions… because technology allows for a perfect interplay of imagery and sound. Creative Elegance A collaboration between speaker manufacturers Teufel and Rosenthal has resulted in the development of “the world’s first wireless speaker in porcelain”. The innovative model combines the two brands’ respective expertise: Teufel, Berlin-based experts for wireless music streaming; and Rosenthal, Selb specialists in porcelain. The chassis of the filigree speaker system has been exclusively designed by Rosenthal and was built manually in traditional white hard porcelain - a combination of organic shape and modern curved lines. The tear-

drop design of the housing is not only visually attractive but also ensures excellent acoustics for the linear frequency response required by the characteristic Teufel reproduction. The integrated bass-reflex system ensures accurate bass reproduction, and the external Class D amplifier individually controls the driver. As is customary with Teufel, music can be streamed to the “Teufel x Rosenthal” speaker via an app. The speaker is shown here with Rosenthal’s Scoop easy chair: www.rosenthal.de

CASA DECOR RETURNING TO ITS ORIGINS IN MADRID

This year’s Casa Decor, which continues until 10 March, returned to the neighbourhood where it was born back in 1992, and where 12 editions have been held since then. After seven years “discovering other iconic areas of Madrid (Chueca, Malasaña, Las Letras...)”, we return with enthusiasm to the Barrio de Salamanca”, specifically, the intersection of Calle Núñez de Balboa and Juan Bravo. Built in 1925, the Núñez de Balboa Street 86 is an example of the imposing housing projects undertaken in the Ensanche de Madrid area towards the east. For this edition, a total of 55 decorated spaces have been presented by inte-

rior decorators, architects, landscapers and designers, in collaboration with 100 leading representatives of the habitat, luxury and lifestyle sectors. They include Villeroy & Boch, who have been participating in Freedom Twist, the public bathroom area designed by Vatea Estudio with Fabian Ñiguez and Nacho Cirujano. Also present is Hisbalit, a leading company in the design and manufacture of ecological glass mosaics, rescuing the simplicity of minimalism and aesthetic harmony with their latest release, Doppel. www.casadecor.es / villeroy-boch.com / wwwhisbalit.es

Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair PREMIER INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE OF SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN As one of the world’s premier design exhibitions, this year’s Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair once again attracted an influential group of professional guests. The Stockholm Design & Architecture Talks – the fair’s forum for knowledge and discussions within the area of design and architecture – was visited by Neri&Hu, Joel Sanders, Tom Dixon, Matali Crasset, Sabine Marcelis and David Thulstrup. This year’s theme was “Challenges for the Future”. Other highlights... · In the entrance hall, Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, who run the award-winning Chinese design and architecture office Neri&Hu, created an installation that highlighted relevant social issues unique to China. · The Design Bar, a mix between an exhibition and a top-class restaurant, formed a common area together with the Stockholm Design & Architecture Talks. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian atriums and Japanese aesthetics, the Norwegian design studio Anderssen & Voll designed a structure in pine that encircled an intimate courtyard. The menu was created by chef

Frida Ronge, culinary director at Tak and UNN in Stockholm. ·The NM&-A collection depicted the process surrounding the interior design of the restaurant and the creation of 80 new interior objects, a project led by Matti Klenell, TAF Arkitekter, Carina Seth Andersson and Stina Löfgren. · Temperament “took the temperature” of contemporary Scandinavian design and interior architecture. With a focus on both private homes and public spaces, Temperament investigated current trends and tendencies based on the personal perspective and approach of the invited artist: designer and set designer Sahara Widoff. · Greenhouse was the fair’s jury-assessed area for young and unestablished designers and design schools. In total, 37 designers/design groups and 29 design schools from 20 countries took part. Design duo Thau & Kallio designed Greenhouse Bar and Café and an exhibition under the direction of the Materials Library. www.stockholmfurniturelightfair.se

The news was positive from the first Maison & Objet exhibition of the year in Paris. According to the organisers in their post-show review, “The global interior industry has grown by two per cent this year. This new-found momentum was confirmed during the January 2018 Maison & Objet. The fair registered an increase in visitor numbers, with figures for French and international buyers markedly on the rise, and inspired visitors with a high-end offering unlike any other, both comprehensive and carefully segmented.” The January 2018 edition confirmed the upturn that began the previous year. “With 89,495 visitors, the latest edition received four per cent more visitors than the January 2017 fair. French buyers, whose numbers have been growing steadily for the past four editions, thronged the halls with renewed interest. The fair is also seeing increasingly more visitors hailing from outside the EU, with the highest growth rates for China, the USA and Russia.” As for the show’s main exhibition highlights, Maison & Objet’s “very special relationship with Italy” resulted in the country being honoured again at the January fair. “The Rising Talents Awards revealed six up-and-coming names on the Italian design scene, each sponsored by one of six famous figures of the creative industry. Additionally, the ICE Italian Trade Promotion Agency launched a ‘Made in Italy’ label, which identified 300 companies located all around the fair. Italy remains the second largest source of exhibitors after France. Referring to “a wave of novelty sweeping across the halls, Philippe Brocart, managing director of SAFI, the company that organises Maison & Objet, reported, “Nine out of 10 visitors are primarily looking for new products. Other motivations include the chance to discover tomorrow’s trends and meeting new suppliers.” Meanwhile, MOM (Maison & Objet & More), an online service launched one year ago to complement the physical event, has been gaining increasingly wide audience “due to its innovative concept and inspiring content. The digital platform is growing exponentially and keeping the community engaged all year round.” www.maison-objet.com

STILL STANDING

HOW TO BUILD A HOME THAT LASTS Article supplied by Atlas Group Buying or building a home is normally one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. So there is no doubt that you will want one that stands the test of time. A solid build... one that meets with the latest legislation and is built using pioneering technology and made with the best suited materials. Demand for homes on the Costa del Sol has reached new heights. In fact,

Marbella’s mayor has announced that unprecedented measures are being taken to speed up the issuance of planning permission and building licences. According to reports, new builds or refurbished properties are in particularly high demand and buyers are demanding quality. But how can you ensure your new home will last over years and retain its quality?

142 MARCH & APRIL 2019

Atlas Column HL62.indd 142

25/2/19 15:42

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIALS Taking into consideration the location, ground conditions and climate, these factors will determine many of the materials for the initial design. For example, building a beach home you must be aware of the water table and salt conditions that will have an effect on the foundations, water proofing and structure. In mountain homes, consider the necessity for retaining walls to hold the build. To cut corners with these materials may prove extremely costly in the future. Installations need to be specifically designed to suit each individual property, depending on factors such as property location, orientation, window sizes and ceiling heights. It is extremely important that the choice is suitable for the home in question. All materials are specifically chosen for each property and even each room in the property – for example, window profiles and mechanisms – will vary depending on its size, design and what type of opener is chosen. Air-conditioning, dehumidifying systems, underfloor heating, etc., are all specifically designed and the machinery is used to suit a particular property while, of course, at all times taking into consideration energy efficiency. AVOID A “BARGAIN” With the property market booming in southern Spain, companies are working harder than ever to entice buyers and are offering discounts, percentages off construction and all kinds of special offers. In fact, when a home is built, the majority of the costs are unavoidable and standard across the market. Legal costs, staff wages, materials and even the architect’s fee cannot be side-stepped and will remain similar throughout the market. You should look for a construction company that will ensure every build is compliant with rules and regulations, and that the correct materials are chosen and installed to ensure that no corners are cut in the build of your home. Avoid a bargain, to ensure a good build that will endure the test of time. INTEGRATE THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR If you are building a new home or undertaking a renovation project, you should consider using one company to execute the work. The build of your home, the swimming pool and the garden space should work together in harmony. And not only in terms of the design: think of the functionalities – the way they work together. The last thing you want to discover once you move into your home is that the drainage of the swimming pool is directed towards the foundations of your house. Choose a construction company that will manage all of this for you and ensure the best possible results, under one roof. MAINTAIN AND PROTECT Once your new home is complete, you must consider regular care and maintenance to ensure that the build, the pool and the garden function correctly in order to keep everything in perfect working condition. • Regular cleaning and maintenance of the drains, floor finishes, air-conditioning filters, etc. • Regular cleaning and maintenance of the interior pool, surfaces, equipment revisions, filtration, wear and tear of parts, etc. • Regular cleaning and maintenance, pruning trees, weeding, flowerbeds, pest control, irrigation checks in order for the garden to receive adequate watering, etc. Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. CRYOMOSS

INSPIRATION FOR

BRINGING NATURE INDOORS Interview with Simona Prasacu

Marmorin Design Center Blvd. Principe Hohenlohe CC Expo (Opposite Marbella Club), Marbella Tel. (+34) 642 129 535 / 679 752 102 contact@cryomoss.com www.cryomoss.com

Tell us more about the concept of CryoMoss… I love nature and the great outdoors. It has always created the most inspiring and amazing ambiance. I’ve noticed whatever we do inside our homes or workplaces it’s extremely difficult to integrate nature, so ever since we’ve discovered natural moss and preserved flowers the challenge has disappeared. Now it’s within everyone’s grasp to take full advantage of the natural ambient indoors. How did you come about starting this business? Well, I’ve been a wedding planner for some 15 years back home and all this time I worked with fresh flowers. Some five years ago preserved moss and flowers caught my attention and I instantly knew that was the way to go. Like the saying goes: “Diamonds are forever“. I felt that could be true for flowers as well. We came to visit Marbella a couple of years ago and instantly decided to move here because, let’s face it, where do you get this lovely weather all year round, the best beaches, restaurants - you name it. But the place was lacking our one-of-a-kind creations so we

decided to go all in. We now have a beautiful area within the Marmorin Design Center on the Golden Mile where people can come and visit us for a chat and see our work. What are the services you offer? We create one-of-a-kind works of art from natural moss and preserved flowers. Working hand in hand with the designers, we can provide not only superb pieces of décor but effective too. Natural moss has the ability to absorb humidity, which we know is a huge problem on the Costa del Sol. It can drop it by so much as 50 per cent indoors; plus it doesn’t require any maintenance at all. Our latest additions are silk flowers, which have become very trendy lately in decorating different restaurants or shops. Imagine an entire façade decorated with these flowers and greens. A true showstopper… More so, we’ve come up with the idea of renting instead of buying. We offer a monthly maintenance, plus total change of décor by season. This way everyone can put the storage room to some better use.

What was the initial concept for setting up AlleeSpain, and tell us about the way you work? “But First You. You Come First”... that’s our motto, and it has been the secret to our success for more than 18 years. At AlleeSpain Consultores we are proud of what sets us apart from other real estate agents: our relationship with the client. We are not mere sellers or exhibitors of homes: we accompany the client throughout the search and decision-making process, and we enjoy how this evolves, even if the client eventually doesn’t acquire a house through us. During this long journey we have been fortunate to have met many people, sharing the special moment when they find their perfect home, and staying in contact even when the professional relationship with AlleeSpain has ended. Thanks to this close and warm personal

contact, in addition to our empathy, we create a special bond with clients, who end up becoming our friends. Young couples looking for a home to create a family; families whose needs or priorities have changed in terms of their housing; people seeking to invest or acquire a home for permanent use, for holidays, to enjoy sports on the Costa del Sol, golf, sailing... they all have a place at AlleeSpain. We dedicate all our efforts and knowledge to every individual, and we can provide everyone with a premium home that accommodates their requirements. You are first - always - for your specific needs and wishes. We listen, we talk and we understand what you want. We dedicate ourselves completely to each client as if they were the only one, and each client is truly unique. We are waiting for you with open arms at AlleeSpain. Let’s talk!

DON AMARO

MODERN STATE-OF-THE-ART VILLAS

SURROUNDED BY NATURE

Otero Group has launched the Don Amaro project, comprising 42 luxury villas in an exclusive and tranquil residential area of Manilva. Don Amaro offers exquisite panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea overlooking Africa and Gibraltar, and is just a few minutes walking distance from the beach itself. Construction on the first phase is due to start in April 2019 and the developers are proud to note that all the villas will have “Energy Certificate A”. Otero has chosen a modern and fresh design for these amazing two-floor villas, which integrate seamlessly with the stunning surrounding nature. The beauty and functionality of the architecture merge to provide maximum comfort within a privileged natural environment. The villas have been designed using latest techniques to create an ecological and low-maintenance building with the finest materials and finishes throughout. The interior areas of the villas are free-flowing and continuous, enjoying open spaces that allow natural light to enter through large glass enclosures, while also protecting the villa from heat through a climate control system. Don Amaro villas offer different living areas to take advantage of day and afternoon light depending on the position of the sun. The ceilings of the first floor subtly cover a terrace shared by all the bedrooms, allowing light to enter conveniently according to the time of the day and the season. These luxury villas are strategically located in Manilva, close to Sotogrande,

Puerto de la Duquesa and Estepona - key areas that offer a wide range of services and amenities, including convenient access to both airports on the Coast: Gibraltar (20 minutes) and Málaga international airport, only a 45-minute drive. They also have the advantage of close proximity to numerous renowned golf courses, select tennis clubs, water sports, yachting, wildlife parks, polo, horse-riding, popular beach clubs, exquisite restaurants and exclusive shops - accompanied by over 320 days of annual sunshine. PACESETTING COSTA DEL SOL COMPANY Otero Group is a highly respected company of architects, developers and builders with 60 years of experience in the building sector. One of Otero’s strengths is that all steps of the construction chain are integrated within the company. “We take care of everything from the initial design, licence management, insurance, everything related with urbanism and construction down to the final delivery. We offer a very competitive commercialisation service through our powerful real estate network on the Coast and in Europe. We also guarantee fixed prices and agreed deadlines by contract.” Otero’s architectural team liaises closely with clients to create designs that are perfectly in tune with their tastes and needs, with the aim of creating the house of their dreams. “Our proposal not only considers aesthetics, but also

provides a practical and eco-friendly solution. The design of your villa is in the best hands.” Otero oversees the entire development process, which enables it to optimise costs and ensure total control over time, increasing coordination between the different departments and stages of the project. “Otero is the only developer capable of launching a promotion in 30 days. The launch includes the editing of the basic project, layouts, realistic 3D images and all the marketing actions (brochures, billboards, commercial plans, publication in magazines, social networks and web portals, mailing and instant messaging, opening of sales booth and launch event).” With more than 60 years of experience in the construction sector, Otero has developed and/or built more than 3,000 projects. “Our consolidated team has achieved an exceptional reputation for its knowledge, expertise and dynamism and, above all, for paying special attention to very good insulation qualities in order to reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint of all our houses. Otero is the only company on the Costa del Sol that can achieve an A energy certificate in all of our homes.” When it comes to sales and marketing, Otero directly reaches more than 10,000 professionals linked to the Costa del Sol real estate industry, both national and international. “The strategy has been to create a multiplier effect, starting with the agencies until reaching the final customer, sharing feedback to effectively meet the current market demand.” Blv. GOURMET HOME COOKING

Creative Ideas for the Barbecue Season

AMERICAN SPARE RIBS (Recipe serves four people...) 2½ kg. spare ribs full of meat, directly from the butcher 1 big onion in slices 2 laurel leavess and 2 big dried chillis salt and about 12 whole grains of pink peppers Cut the raw spare ribs into eight large pieces, two nice big pieces for each person. Boil them with the onions and all the spices in plenty of water for approximately 30 minutes. When they are done, dip them in your homemade barbecue sauce and then throw them on the grill until they have a good grill colour on both sides. Brush with plenty of barbecue sauce along the way, so they stay nice and juicy. With the insider trick about boiling the spare ribs before you put them on the barbecue, you have the most juicy and delicious meat, which easily separates from the bones. At the same time, it’s

fast and you don’t have to be nervous that they might be raw inside, dry or burned on the grill. Our American style spare ribs are always served with raw grilled corn, homemade coleslaw and the world’s best gourmet potato. GOURMET BARBECUE SAUCE 2 chopped garlic 1 onion chopped in small pieces 500 gr. fresh chopped tomatoes 3 tablespoons concentrated tomato 3 tablespoons brown sugar 3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3 tablespoons Worcester sauce 1 tablespoons soya 1 fresh finely chopped red chilli ½ dl. good virgin olive oil Fresh thyme, paprika, cayenne pepper, tabasco, salt and pepper to your taste

Fry the garlic, onions and chilli in the oil at medium-high heat. Add the brown sugar and let it caramelise a little bit. Add the balsamic vinegar and the rest of the ingredients. Let the sauce simmer at medium heat for approximately 20 minutes. Blend the sauce with a hand blender and you will achieve a nice creamy consistence. This barbecue sauce is a must in the fridge over the entire grill session and it’s also a perfect companion for burgers and hot wings. COLESLAW ½ kg. carrots ½ kg. white cabbage ½ red onion juice from ½ lemon 1 teaspoon spiced white wine vinegar 1 dl. of your favourite mayonnaise 1 dl. crème fraîche 18% Fresh chopped parsley, salt and pepper

Peel all the carrots, grate them in your food processor or by hand just to get some exercise, then leave them to dry on a clean kitchen towel. Cut the white cabbage and the red onion into very thin slices. Mix the remaining ingredients together and season with salt and pepper before mixing everything together. Refrigerate for at least half an hour before serving. If you want an extra special taste, you can add some freshly chopped celery and grains of cumin to the recipe.

GOURMET POTATOES 1 kg. high-quality potatoes for frying 1 dl. white wine vinegar 1 large spoonful salt... yes I’m serious! 1 litre sunflower oil Paprika Maldon flake salt and pepper Cut the potatoes into boats or your favourite size and rinse them in cold water, until the water loses the milky white colour. Cook with water, vinegar and salt until they are “almost” done and still a bit crunchy. Rinse them in ice-water for some minutes to stop the cooking process. Leave to rest in the refrigerator for at least half an hour. Now they are ready for first frying in oil. When the potatoes begin to take a little colour from the frying, it’s important they cool down again and get another chill in the fridge for at least half an hour - and they can also be frozen for later. These pre-made potatoes are ready for the final frying in the oil, whenever you need them. Mix the Maldon salt flakes with pepper and a bit of paprika and sprinkle over the potatoes before serving. It might seem a bit of work just for some potatoes, but I can assure you it is worth the whole process. You get the crispiest crust on the outside with delicious creamy filling inside… these are the world’s best and tastiest gourmet potatoes. Last summer another Indian restaurant opened its doors in Nueva Andalucía. With five Indian restaurants (at the last count) already established within a two-kilometre radius, it was going to be quite an undertaking to impress the curry aficionados of Nueva Andalucía - who have quite a choice already - but it seems that they have managed to do so quite effortlessly, scoring five out of five on Tripadvisor. We visited the newcomer on the block to find out more… Mumbai City Indian is situated at the top of Calle Los Jazmines near the post office in La Campana – an upand-coming area with popular new bars and restaurants drawing locals of all ages and nationalities. The owner of Mumbai City, a young and upbeat fellow, greets us at the door with a beaming smile and shows us to our seats. The restaurant has a large outside terrace and inside it is spacious, with heating and air-conditioning, and seating for around 50 people with a bar for those who choose to take a drink while waiting for their takeaway. We asked what specialities he could recommend and he immediately suggested their chicken hariyali - a dish we had never heard of but turned out to be chicken sim-

mered in green herbs, fresh curry leaves, ground spices, mint and coriander. He also recommended the lamb lababdar with fresh mint and spices, and lamb chops marinated in spices and tandoori-grilled. For those on plant diets, there is a wide range of vegetable dishes as well as delicious berry blends, fruit smoothies and vegetable juices. We observed that there were a number of dishes on the menu that we had not come across before, which sets this restaurant aside from many of the other Indian establishments in the area. The owner was also very proud to inform us that their northern Indian chef cooks everything from scratch and it is done authentically – they even have a clay oven to offer the bona fide earthy taste of Indian cuisine. Mumbai City is open every day for lunch and dinner (closed for lunch only on Tuesdays) and at lunchtimes they offer a great value “menu del día” (lunch menu) for €12.50 which includes three courses and a drink. On special nights they provide some entertainment, with a Bollywood dancer adding to the authentic Indian experience. You can find out more about those nights on their Facebook page.

HEALTHY EATING

Clean, Conscious & Mindful Eating FOR A “BIKINI BODY”

By Natalia Belaiche

An increasing number of people understand that a more conscious way of eating could help them completely overcome weight problems. Ideally, you should learn how to understand your body’s needs and satisfy them with the right food. At Healthy Kitchen deli in Puerto Banús we hold nutrition workshops every Thursday to help you reach your personal goals and achieve your best shape through healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes. Calorie counting has become very ineffective. When we exclude some food groups from the daily diet, our body starts to struggle by missing certain nutrients, and once we stop the diet we gain extra weight very quickly, as the body creates a storage for future dieting. You should understand that the calories of an apple and a piece of a cake are very different. In theory, they provide the same amount of energy but in different bodies they have a different impact. Having a fast metabolism, being a certain metabolic type or having a microbiome condition or digestion problems directly affects whether your body decides to store extra calories as fat cells or not. We all know that some people can eat 3,000 calories per day and not gain weight, and others put on weight just by going from 1,200 to 1,600 calories. Ideally, we should know which food is good for our body and health, but in starting to understand this, we should push the restart button – give our digestive system a healthy break. Detox programs have become so popular lately as they help people change their (bad) food habits, set them on a clean eating path, and get rid of fat soluble toxins and unwanted extra weight forever. After a short detox program, you start to feel that some foods make you feel really heavy and lazy and others bring you lightness and energy. This doesn’t mean that you should eat only salads - it just means that you should eat what makes you feel and look great. At our Healthy Kitchen deli we have created different detox packages which are satisfying to everyone’s individual needs. Some include only juices and smoothies; others detox food or soups. Any of these packages include everything you need to get you through your day and, if required, we deliver them to your doorbell in the morning. Just after a few days you will feel and look lighter and will start to discover what food is more beneficial to your very personal requirements.

WINE NOTES

Montilla and All It Stands For By Andrew J Linn

162 MARCH & APRIL 2019

Cuisine HL62.indd 162

25/2/19 16:09

Road traffic between the Coast and Córdoba is quite heavy, but pretty much non-stop, and without the benefit of statistics it is probably accurate to assume that Montilla is not a feature. Quite a shame really, particularly if the traveller is interested in Andalucian wines, mainly sherry, as Montilla (and Moriles) are often unjustly referred to as being Spain’s secondary sherry area. While wines from the sherry triangle - Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda - often have alcohol added when exported, the Montilla versions are “pure”, possibly because they have a very limited export trade. While anyone who has visited a sherry bodega may have been surprised to see up to five layers of oak butts ranged one tier above another to the roof, the most visually attractive thing about a Montilla bodega are the fermenting jars: huge amphora-like concrete vats that, after the grape harvest, can be seen bubbling as the must slowly turns into wine. Another distinctive thing about this region is the lack of variety as far as the grapes are concerned. Or maybe that should be grape. Only the Pedro Ximénez (PX) variety is used, although - when you consider that throughout the entire Jerez zone of production the Palomino grape is king, with a little PX thrown in - there can be nothing wrong with that. Different categories of wine are not lacking. Fragrant, dry finos, nutty amontillados (named after Montilla they say), and voluptuous palo cortados and olorosos are a sherry drinker’s delight. The local inhabitants are not much interested in seeing their favourite tipple sent anywhere else, and only a tiny percentage of the production ever makes it outside the region. However, the casual visitor will be sure of a warm welcome inside the massive whitewashed bodega walls that in the summer heat make life just about bearable. You will be almost alone, as, unlike the mass-wine-tourism business of the Jerez area, in Montilla you will usually be the only visitor. Montilla is a hard-working town spilling downhill from its mediaeval centre, not the prettiest, but proud of its bodegas and its 16th-century convent where unseen nuns sell biscuits through a revolving hatch. Although some of the larger bodegas have joined together or been taken over by outside interests, the Robles family has managed to stay independent since 1927. It is run by the fourth generation, which, back in 1999, took the very unusual decision of going completely organic.

Anyone who understands that sherry is a blend of different vintages that can go back as far as 80 years or more, will understand that this project consisted of throwing all the old wine away and starting afresh with wine using organically-grown grapes. While it is acknowledged that most sherry-type wine is made in the bodega by various blending processes, Robles’s wine is definitely made in the vineyard, where fertilisers and chemical sprays are never used. But forget those neatly-ploughed ranks of perfectly aligned vines with not a leaf out of place. Here is a mumble-jumble of vegetation that succeeds in attracting birds that will eat the insects that would otherwise eat the vines. In fact the vineyards are not a pretty sight. The theory is so simple that you wonder why not all wine producers let their vineyards return to nature. Robles’s conversion to organic resulted in a 15 per cent increase in production and a 20 per cent increase in the ambient humidity of the vineyards, an important factor in an area where rainfall is low. The rabbits no longer eat the vines (rather they thrive on the shrubs); and, although there was a plague of snails one year, not one was found on a vine. Soil erosion in heavy rains is a thing of the past as the carpet of “weeds” in the vineyard holds the earth in place. Be that as it may, the final product is good enough to have been awarded international honours globally. Indeed, it is the only winery whose products are certified as organic and vegan, and the Fino has been awarded the best-inSpain tag on several occasions. The entire production complex is powered by solar energy and water is recycled, with solid materials being treated on biomass principles. Giving the lie to the previous statement that all Montilla and Moriles wines are made from Pedro Ximénez grape varieties, Robles has sneaked in a few out-of-area varieties to liven up the excellent selection. It uses the Verdejo grape, the basis of the Rueda wines we drink on a daily basis, for one of its wines, as well as a unique blend of PX and Verdejo for another. Lovers of Vermouth are in for a treat if they try the VRMT, made from eight-year-old Oloroso, to which a smidgen of PX has been added, Indeed, all Robles’ wines are intensely interesting, and most people who try them for the first time will wonder what took them so long. None of the wine costs more than €9 euros and it can also be bought in five and 15-litre bag-in-box formats: www.bodegasrobles.es

Cutting-Edge Knee Surgery … AND PACESETTING THERAPY FOR ALZHEIMER’S Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

SELF-POWERED KNEE IMPLANTS Researchers at State University of New York in the United States are now developing self-powered knee implants that could reduce the number of knee replacement surgeries. They are working on implants that can provide physicians with regular activity updates and are powered by the patient’s movement. Knee replacement surgery is the most common joint replacement procedure, with the number of surgeries increasing every year. Many of these surgeries are done to replace an older implant or one that has worn out. Often, doctors don’t know if patients are over-exerting themselves until they begin to develop symptoms. By that point, the damage to the implant has already been done. For patients going through knee replacement surgery every five or 10 years, it is a daunting task. Researchers decided it was time to create smarter knee implants that could monitor changes in activity as they happened. “We are working on a knee implant that has built-in sensors that can monitor how much pressure is being put on the implant so doctors can have a clearer understanding of how much activity is negatively affecting the implant,” said Sherry Towfighian, who is an assistant professor at Binghamton University in New York. The sensors allow doctors to tell patients when a certain movement has become too much for the implant so patients can quickly adjust and avoid further damage to the implant. It helps them find the sweet spot of activity for each particular patient. The researchers are using triboelectric energy, a type of energy that is collected from friction. Once someone walks, the friction of the micro-surfaces coming into contact with each other can be used to power the load sensors. These smart implants will not only give feedback to doctors but will help researchers in the development of future implants. “The sensors will tell us more about the demands that are placed on implants, and with that knowledge researchers can start to improve the implants even more,” said Towfighian. WILL HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY HELP WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE? Researchers have the first PET scan-documented case of improvement in brain metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease in a patient treated with hyperbaric

oxygen therapy (HBOT). There has been controversy about whether this approach really works or is a waste of money. Dr. Paul Harch, clinical professor and director of hyperbaric medicine at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, and Dr. Edward Fogarty, chairman of radiology at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in the United States, report the first PET scan-documented case of improvement in brain metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease in a patient treated with HBOT. The authors report the case of a 58-year-old woman who had experienced five years of cognitive decline, which began accelerating rapidly. Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) suggested Alzheimer’s disease. The diagnosis was confirmed by 18Fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) brain imaging, which revealed global and typical metabolic deficits in Alzheimer’s. The patient underwent a total of 40 HBOT treatments - five days a week over 66 days. Each treatment consisted of 1.15 atmosphere absolute/50 minutes total treatment time. After 21 treatments, the patient reported increased energy and level of activity, better mood and ability to perform daily living activities, as well as working on crossword puzzles. After 40 treatments, she reported increased memory and concentration, sleep, conversation, appetite, ability to use the computer, more good days (5/7) than bad days, resolved anxiety, and decreased disorientation and frustration. “We demonstrated the largest improvement in brain metabolism of any therapy for Alzheimer’s disease,” notes Dr. Harch. “HBOT in this patient may be the first treatment not only to halt but temporarily reverse disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease.” The physicians report that, two months post-HBOT, the patient felt a recurrence in her symptoms. She was retreated over the next 20 months with 56 HBOTs (total 96) at the same dose, supplemental oxygen and medications. The first successful HBOT-treated case of Alzheimer’s disease was published in 2001. The present case report is the first patient in a series of 11 HBOTtreated patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise for the Brain By Rachel Garrod

We all worry about our memory as we get older, and sadly it is true that after age 45 areas in the brain associated with memory, attention and perception do begin to shrink. But… it´s not all bad news! There is a large body of evidence now showing us how beneficial exercise is for the brain. When we are active we increase blood flow around the body, and this in turn increases blood flow to the brain - bringing more oxygen, growth factors, hormones and nutrients to the brain. Aerobic exercise (cycling, running, etc.) stimulates production of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which contributes to the growth of new neurones in the brain – even after 45! Fifteen years ago researchers found that after using a running wheel there was a boost in neurone formation in the hippocampi (associated with memory) area of the brain in mice. And in humans, older adults who undertook aerobic exercise three times a week for one year grew larger hippocampi areas. This is part of the reason why doctors today believe that walking, running and cycling may help prevent dementia. Liu-Ambrose tested this hypothesis in people with mild cognitive impairment known to be at greater risk of developing dementia. She compared aerobic exercise and strength training in 86 women with early cognitive dysfunction.

One group lifted weights twice a week for an hour each time, another group did brisk walking and a third group did stretching only. After six months both exercise groups had an improvement in spatial memory (the ability to remember places and surroundings). The aerobic group showed improvements in verbal memory ( finding that word you were searching for). The weight lifting group showed other improvements, such as in executive function (reasoning, multi-tasking, complex thinking) and in associative memory (the ability to link someone’s face to their name for instance). The group that performed only stretching showed no effects on memory. Whilst aerobic exercise is undoubtedly good for the brain, resistance exercise (weight training or using body resistance) reduces inflammation of a type that is known to be associated with dementia. Resisted and aerobic exercise help the brain in different ways. If you need help being more active and want to learn about the best exercise for your brain, please get in touch. It’s never too late to improve. Physiotherapy lecturer and counsellor Rachel Garrod can be contacted at: Tel. (+34) 652 281 122; rachelgarrod1@gmail.com

Sunborn Gibraltar AN IN-DEPTH INSIGHT INTO THE LUXURY FLOATING HOTEL ON OUR DOORSTEP

Since the Sunborn opened in 2014, many of us living on the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar have visited this venue, whether it was to try our luck in the casino or simply enjoy a drink in one of their bars… but not many can say that they have had the true and full experience of this quite extraordinary hotel that is literally floating on our doorstep. Home & Lifestyle Magazine - in perfect timing for Sunborn’s fifth anniversary - decided to take a more in-depth look at what they offer guests… 168 MARCH & APRIL 2019

Travel HL62.indd 168

25/2/19 16:24

When the Sunborn five-star superyacht hotel moored in Gibraltar’s harbour five years ago, it certainly turned a few heads. The concept of a floating luxury hotel was unique to this part of Europe and, as large as the project was, it nevertheless made little disruption to the local area as it was built in Malaysia and then sailed over to Gibraltar - nestling itself in the heart of the vibrant Ocean Village marina. It respected Gibraltar’s infrastructure as it attracted tourists from far and wide and, as a result, created new jobs whilst raising the profile of Gibraltar and boosting the local economy. This 465-foot cruise ship has no fewer than seven decks with two restaurants, an outdoor pool bar, several conference rooms, a casino, ballroom, spa and beauty centre, plus a fully-equipped fitness room that looks over the marina. On arrival you cannot fail to notice the enormous glittering globe orbited by two chrome rings hovering over the marblefloored reception area, resembling a diamond-encrusted planet that sets the tone for this lavish world you are about to enter. The receptionists were smiling and extremely informative, as were all the staff we met working there - without exception. The lift going up to our room had a glass rear wall offering formidable views across the north side of the marina. Walking down the long corridors of this 189-room hotel, the carpets have dramatic swirling patterns and the walls are adorned with chrome drop-like sculptures to remind the guests that you are indeed staying on water (easy to forget on such a huge vessel that is permanently anchored down with a flat underbelly). We stayed in the Junior Suite, which consisted of a large living room, work area and WC. The living room had two sliding doors, either side of a large flat screen TV, that took us into the spacious bedroom adjoining a large, open and rather decadent bathroom with gold and white mosaic tiles and marble walls. The wooddecked terrace, with a lounge and small dining area, provided views over Ocean Village so you could take in the buzzy ambience of the local environment.

WITH SPECIAL THANKS TO BRITTA, UMBERTO AND GLORIA… SUNBORN GIBRALTAR, 35 OCEAN VILLAGE PROMENADE, GIBRALTAR Tel. (+350) 2001 6000 www.sunborngibraltar.com

We chose to dine in La Sala - the more casual of the two restaurants they house on the ship. The menu is varied and therefore would suit all tastes, with cocktails and wines that ranged from economical to high-end. Their bar area offers live music, with guests mingling and dancing into the night, and after our sumptuous meal and a quick walk around Ocean Village we found La Sala to be the liveliest venue within the close vicinity. Breakfast was in the Barbary restaurant on the top deck – a large airy space with views out to the sea and featuring a quirky and contemporary design. The breakfast was buffet-style with attentive staff all wishing us a good morning and tending to our every need. During the day and evening, the Barbary offers a more formal dining experience than La Sala, with a Moroccan-orientated menu that could be interpreted as “fusion” accommodating a broad range of diners with hearty Moroccanspiced dishes as well as Mezze and what they call “British classics”, such as aged beef burger, surf and turf, beer batter fish and chips, and English Sunday lunches.

Also on the top deck at the stern of the ship is the Aqua Bar, where there is a small pool, sun loungers and a bar area. At the bow of the ship you will observe the Wheel House, where you can also take in the sun on loungers in a quieter environment looking out onto the sea. To summarise a stay on the Sunborn… it cannot be denied that it comes with a price tag, but it offers something that no other hotel in the southern peninsula can provide. For a start, the obvious attraction to this hotel is that it floats… giving it the ultimate novelty factor; but with that you also benefit from the superyacht experience with glamorous décor and luxury services without having to sail away from the coastline. The service is second-to-none and you really get a sense that the staff genuinely love working there, which emanates positive feeling throughout all areas of the ship. No matter what kind of guest you are, the Sunborn offers something for everyone, which makes a stay on this magnificent vessel a very special one.

For 19 consecutive years now, the Azimut|Benetti Group has led the way when it comes to international mega yacht construction. According to the Global Order Book – an annual ranking drawn up by UK magazine Boat International – the group has 97 mega yachts over 24 metres in length under construction, more than any of the other leading shipyards reviewed. And that’s just mega yachts: Azimut|Benetti’s leadership position has been consolidated across the luxury boating spectrum since – from the late nineties onwards – it acquired new boatyards at Fano, restructured the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and constructed a new site at Avigliana. Meanwhile, it has also extended its global reach further with other sites in Brazil. Founded by university student Paulo Vitelli in 1969, Azimut started off chartering sailing boats, soon moved into distribution for prestigious yachting brands in in Italy, then began designing new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, for example, Azimut gained early success with the AZ 43’ Bali, a mass-produced fibreglass boat. It gradually expanded its range before, in 1985, acquiring Benetti, a venerable brand that had been building boats since 1873 and is credited with having designed the concept of the megayacht. The merger enabled Azimut to define new styles and industry standards in the boat building industry, including such revolutionary trends as large frameless windows, electric seats and walnut interiors.

The company’s ongoing commitment to ground-breaking technology and innovation is amply reflected every new season in the eagerly awaited unveiling of its latest boats. Here we take a look at five of the most recent models... · Launched on the market in September 2018, the Azimut S6 features an external design by Stefano Righini and internal by Francesco Guida, who opted for a “cosy minimal design that balances elegance and simplicity”. · The Grande 25 Metri is highlighted by Stefano Righini’s external design, with the internal layout created by Achille Salvagni, who developed an unusual design for the day zone – breaking the usual separation between sofa and dining area. · With an internal design by Achille Salvagni and external lines by Stefano Righini, the Grande 32 Metri is characterised by a 70 square metre flybridge that accentuates its smooth curves. · Much of the Azimut 55’s success is attributed to the collaboration between Stefano Righini and Achille Salvagni, with the model described as “an oasis of wellbeing, hiding true gems like the big sun lounging area on the main deck.” · Designed by Neo Design study, the Atlantis 51 has been “created for people who want to spend the entire day in the open air”... hence the main deck that extends into an expansive al fresco lounge area.

MATUTE

A Visual Artist Who Gives Life to Images By Carmen Ă lvarez Morales (Art Critic)

174 MARCH & APRIL 2019

Art HL62.indd 174

25/2/19 17:17

Matute is an artist of his time who portrays his most immediate surroundings in an honest and unpretentious way. His studio in Sotogrande is where he greets his customers, seeking commissions of different kinds - or directly buying his works. This is also where, in addition to teaching art classes, he makes his famous woodcut engravings. Matute’s graphic work, using the woodcut as a way of expression, offers us an insight into his own world of discovery. The creative process of his work is in a constant relationship with the final result. Technically, his work deals with the development of a pictorial image on a wooden board from a photographic image. His woodcuts are four-colour prints of pure colours, formed by yellow, magenta, cyan and black, which involves carving four wooden plates. This explains the laborious work involved with his xylographs, an ancestral language that requires patience and that is counteracted by current thematic images.

Matute uses photography, typical of our time, because it allows him to freeze that moment. He then transfers it to an engraving, which entails freezing, defrosting and freezing again, eventually transforming the work into “putrefied” moments. This explains, and accentuates, how fast the current images expire - born to die immediately. His work is a tribute to the photographic image of those moments, paralysed on paper. Matute enhances and fossilises them with a great freshness, thanks to the use of wood grain as a living element of nature. Images have a unique life, which is art, and Matute - through these images gives them that life. C.C. Sotomarket, Sotogrande Tel. ARTENOVUM

WELCOME TO THE MAGICAL WORLD

OF BOBBY BEAR

Artenovum is a small exclusive Danish/Spanish company and brand, filled with art and ideas… unique paintings, digital art, murals, decoration, classical and happy sculptures, and so much more. The company was founded in 2004 by Mogens Mugge Fischer and Ose del Sol, and since then they have forged a prominent presence on the art scene, not only locally in Marbella and elsewhere on the Costa del Sol, but also around the world – satisfying their many happy collectors. They love art and decoration, and being creative, and now they are embarked on “a new daring quest to make a sculptural connection to your childhood” with their latest art project: The Bobby Bear®. They describe it as “bringing all your childhood memories together in one sculpture, a sculpture which you will be able to enjoy every day, decorating your home or office while at the same time recalling fond memories”. To help us connect with their latest creative concept, they ask, “Remember your childhood? When that adorable stuffed bear was your best friend? You carried him around with you whenever possible, you shared all your happy moments with him, and he comforted you when you were sad. It was either a bear or a dog, or another stuffed animal. A lot of us would surely never go to bed without having our best friend by our side - whispering our secrets to him before sleeping.” According to Mugge and Ose, the idea behind The Bobby Bear® is that “even though kids grow up - well, we all grow up - we must never forget the child inside. Our stuffed friend from back then might be gone by now, or is in a box in the attic, but we are both quite sure that if you see him again your old friend will bring a big smile back to your face.” The production is limited, as all the steps involved in making the The Bobby Bear® involve Mugge and Ose personally. It is made using 100 per cent green energy and biodegradable material, “to preserve our planet”.

The Bobby Bear® is made by 3D printer, using PLA-filament, an eco-friendly printer material produced from renewable resources (normally corn-starch), and respecting the environment. The Bobby Bear® sculptures are made from start to finish in the Artenovum workshops in southern Spain. During the whole process, the electricity used is 100 per cent certified green energy. The Bobby Bear® sculpture comes in three sizes: Mini Bobby (16 centimetres high), Bobby (22 centimetres) and Big Bobby (31 centimetres). A wide range of colours is available.

The exhibition showcases the variety and diversity of life across the nation. According to the organisers, “Initially conceived against the backdrop of the referendum, this year, we want to look at how the British public are responding to a nation in flux. Portrait of Britain is more crucial than ever. We don’t want to show a nation divided; instead, we want to see examples of the unique, eccentric, resilient British spirit.” One hundred winning portraits will be displayed across JCDecaux’s national channel of digital screens in a UK-wide public exhibition, as part of the nationwide public exhibition in September 2019 for one month. Two hundred shortlisted and winning portraits will be featured in a second edition, which will be distributed worldwide by Hoxton Mini Press. www.bjp-online.com

news TD SAT & SOUND

DUAL AWARD-WINNING HONOUR FOR MARBELLA COMPANY TD Sat & Sound has received two prestigious awards from its manufacturer. The first was “Platinum Partner for 2018”, representing recognition that the company is selling above a certain level of Control4 products. Only one other Spanish company (in Mallorca) has the same status. The other award was the “Pinnacle”; one of only three presented in Spain. According to TD Sat & Sound, the Pinnacle is the highest award any company can receive from a supplier, meaning they are one of the best in sales and product knowledge, with an excellent end result for the end customer. “These awards show us that our dedication and detail for quality pays-off. Our philosophy isn’t to become the biggest domotics (home automation) company on the Coast, but definitely to be one of the best. We would like to take this opportunity to reach out to new collaborators such as architects, developers and builders. We want everyone to feel welcome in our showroom at the Marmorin Design Center to have a chat, without any obligation, and see if we can help each other.” As for their business outlet, the company said, “We have been in the Marmorin Design Center for around a year and we can now see how positive this new concept is. Each company focuses on what it does best enabling us to work with talented professionals within their field. We have created a special wall with demonstration models so clients can see how our products would work in a home such as their own. We have also created different areas with some exciting products, for example, outdoor speakers designed in stone and marble. In addition, we have a music corner with a vinyl record player, which is becoming more popular as it offers better quality music than a normal mp3 file. www.tdsatandsound.com

MAX BEACH

NEW MANAGEMENT FOR POPULAR MIJAS COSTA ESTABLISHMENT

Metro Grupo has acquired Max Beach, located at Playa Riviera in the popular Mijas Costa holiday resort area and renowned for its stunning panoramic views. Metro is already planning some key changes in the first year, including “a culinary delight” curated by Metro Grupo executive chef Lawrence Otterburn in conjunction with new head chef Geoffrey Sacchi (Nikki Beach). Other exciting news is the creation of Max Fitness, a new gym on the upper level. “Picture yourself working out while gazing across the Mediterranean waters. Then enjoy a breakfast downstairs by the pool.” Powered by Reebok Functional, Max Fitness will be run by local “fuengiroleño” David Segorbe, world powerlifting champion and world record holder in deadweight. David is also a community figure supporting various charitable projects. Max Beach is a restaurant on the seafront featuring large terraces with sunbeds and Balinese-style beds surrounding an attractive 25-metre

swimming pool. In addition, there will be a concession of sunbeds on the sandy beach in front, served by Max Beach. It is the ideal venue for events of all sizes such as weddings and corporate functions, birthdays and anniversary parties. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, there will also be a sushi bar and a cocktail bar, as well as live entertainment by the Coast’s favourite artists. Expected to open in April 2019, the new Max Beach “will be the crown in Mijas Costa’s culinary and entertainment lifestyle, with the added bonus of the gym for those who like to look after themselves physically, as well in a relaxing manner”. Property developer Bynok is expecting more than 1,000 real estate agents, investors and other construction industry professionals to attend a special keynote presentation on 8 March in Puerto Banús, where the pacesetting company will be outlining its new market strategies, and reporting on its current and future projects. According to CEO Armando Gómez, Bynok has “brought about a complete revolution in the concept of real estate development, devising and implementing a comprehensive management model in which all the professionals in the sector - architects, builders, investors and end-customers - work together in a totally coordinated way, thus ensuring a better quality product, better costs and less development time”.

He notes that, at the beginning of 2017, the company already had more than 200 employees compared with just three who launched its operations in 2013. They had more than 250 real estate developments underway, compared with four projects started in 2013, and more than €300 million in investment volume compared with turnover of €1 million the year it arrived on the Costa del Sol. The company has experienced growth of over 300 per cent compared with data for 2015, a figure he says it intends to continue increasing “as forecasts for this year indicate”. For Armando Gómez, the difference with Bynok is clear. “With the traditional method of real estate development there are different phases, with each being subject to the introduction of corresponding profit margins: land acquisition, lawyers, architecture, project manager, builder, sales... The difference with Bynok is that all phases are coordinated within the company itself and a fixed price is guaranteed. At Bynok we eliminate all profit margins of the different phases and are able to sell well below the market price and still be able to maintain sound profits for our company and unbeatable margins of profitability for our investors. “In addition, Bynok is constantly seeking out and applying the most innovative construction systems, using materials and construction techniques highlighted by latest technology and the highest quality.” Last year, Bynok initiated its international expansion and began managing the development of more than 1,000 homes in different areas, with the Costa del Sol its main current market. EXPERT ADVICE

The Beckham Law Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

Royal Decree 687/2005 is more commonly known as the “Beckham Law”. British footballer David Beckham was one of the first to benefit from this special regime, taxed as a non-resident when he was employed by Real Madrid in Spain. However, “natural persons” who become tax residents as a result of their stay in Spain may still choose to pay the non-resident income tax. This decision can be made during the tax period in which the individual becomes a tax resident in Spain. It can also be made in the following five tax years, provided that a series of requirements is met: A) They have not been residents in Spain during the 10 tax periods prior to the one in which they are settling in Spain. B) This settling in Spain occurs as a result of any of the following circumstances… B1) An employment contract, with the exception of the special employment relationship of professional athletes regulated by Royal Decree 1006/1985, of 26 June. B2) A consequence of the acquisition of the status of administrator of an entity in whose stock capital he or she does not participate or, to the contrary, when participation in this entity does not determine the consideration of a related entity in the terms foreseen in Article 18 of the Law on Corporate Tax.

C) He or she does not obtain income that would be considered to have been obtained through a permanent establishment in Spain. How to proceed to qualify for this special tax regime option? You must submit Model 149 to the tax administration. The declaration of the non-resident income tax will be completed using Model 151. What tax rates apply to the income of taxpayers under the non-resident income tax? • For 2016 and each subsequent year, the tax rate has been approximately 19 per cent for residents of the EU, Iceland and Norway; and it has been 24 per cent for all others. • The tax rate for dividends has been 19 per cent. For interest and other income obtained from the assignment of own capital to third parties, the tax rate has been 19 per cent. • Pensions and other similar benefits received by natural non-residents in Spain, regardless of the person who has generated the right to receive them, will be taxed according to a specific scale (contact us for detailed information). • Capital gains, derived from the transfer of real estate, will be taxed at the rate in force in the year in which the income was accrued. From 2016 onwards, this has been taxed at 19 per cent.
