EDITORIAL It will have been with an immense sense of relief that most of us reached the end of 2020. Tinged with sadness, of course, as so many people have suffered tragedy and hardship in the wake of an unprecedented year of upheaval.

If there is anything positive to have come out of the coronavirus pandemic, it is that we have been able to regroup, collect our thoughts and (in many cases) take the opportunity of undertaking a timely (and perhaps overdue) reboot – personal, professional or even both.

As we have noted before, in the early months of COVID-19, the home took on an even more crucial role in our lives, whether it has been as a selfisolating haven of security for the family or as a new workspace and educational area in this era of home working and schooling.

So, as we start a new year we all desperately hope will bring much less heartbreak and restrictive mobility, especially as more and more people are vaccinated, it is – perhaps more than any other 1 January in our lives – a highly appropriate time to make a new start and give our homes a new look. Time to put 2020 behind us and revitalise our home spaces with a fresh décor, updated furniture or more comprehensive makeover.

Fortunately, we are blessed on the Costa del Sol with some of the finest and most talented home decoration and design specialists in Europe, many of whom have their projects, products and services featured in this issue.

The following pages offer a wonderful array of creative ideas and concepts to transform your home… and, for more inspiration, this is also the time of the year when global brands highlight their new “colours of the year”.

First out of the block was Dulux, who announced that their colour for 2021 would be Brave Ground. Explaining the choice, Dulux UK creative director Marianne Shillingford said, “The colours on our walls are the backdrop to how we live our life. For many of us, lockdown has served to emphasise how important our home environment has become, it has been the place where we work, learn, relax. It can lift us up, nurture us, comfort us.

“We continue to live through uncertain times. In 2021, the warm and grounding tones of Brave Ground will allow us to find certainty in the strength from the very ground beneath our feet, emboldening us to go forward and begin to live again and giving us the flex to adapt to the ever changing circumstances we face.”

Then came Shutterstock with the release of their annual colour trends report, “which anticipates the hues that will dominate in 2021”. The forecast is based on Shutterstock’s analysis of pixel data together with image download data. “This year’s analysis shows that rich colours found in nature will dominate in the year to come,” they reported. The top-three colours are Set Sail Champagne, Fortuna Gold and Tidewater Green.

And finally, arguably the most authoritative and certainly the most mediatic of them all, Pantone, with two colours for 2021: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.

“Practical and rock solid,” noted Pantone, “but at the same time warming and optimistic, the union… is one of strength and positivity. It is a story of colour that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly… We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”

Admirable sentiments, and ones which we hope will fortify us all through 2021.

THE REAL YOU What with COVID-19 and the Christmas festivities, we have seen a lot of our living room recently. Perhaps after 2020 it is now time to give this much-used room a facelift and invest in a new sofa.

Alternatively, by adding a statement chair or rug, or even just a new painting, we can give the space a fresh lease of life. The layout of the room should always be carefully thought through so that it is functional for everyday use.

For example, if the household members are television watchers, seating should be placed so that everyone can view the TV set comfortably. However, if the living room is used mainly for entertaining, perhaps consider side tables and a statement coffee table so that guests can rest drinks with ease. Making the space a reflection of your style, and the way you like to live, is never more important than in this key area of your home, so get inspired!

INSPIRATION Love it or hate it, most of us have had to get used to working from home in recent times – resulting in many people needing to start creating work areas within their homes. Even though some have had to resort to the dining room table for work, a designated desk and ergonomic chair is obviously the ideal option. Fabrics give a textural touchy-feely look to a room. Luxurious velvets add a sense of glamour, shimmering in the light and unstoppably strokable! Faux furs and tasselled fringes are great if you are going for a more boho look. When it comes to curtains, opt for a dramatic style by hanging them high, which also makes the room seem larger and the ceiling higher than it actually is. Often people tend to go for a plain design when choosing curtains, and this is certainly a good choice, especially if the room is busy or lacking in space. If, on the other hand, the space allows for a bold print, the fabric can be quite transformative aesthetically. There is a lot to choose from so go for a timeless print that won’t leave you bored looking at it all the time. THE

DINING IN REVOLUTION As we have been eating more in our homes rather than dining out recently, the dining table has all of a sudden had to rise to the occasion. When shopping for a new dining set, wooden models are the most popular choice for a table, as wood is durable and is best-suited to stand-up to the wear and tear it endures. A minimalist look for a dining set is always a good bet when shopping around – you can soften the look with cushions and fluffy throws over the backs of the chairs if necessary.

The size of the table should accommodate the usual number of diners, with ample space between each person. Also, consider the shape so that it fits into the room – allowing for people to walk around it easily when they need to get up and move behind other diners’ chairs. Round tables are good for more casual dining or when space is limited. If you have a large rectangular room, a round table may feel lost, and if you regularly invite guests over for dinner an extendable table could be the best solution for you.

Make sure that your chairs are the correct height and not too high, so that there is plenty of leg-room under the tabletop.

On the other hand, you don’t want chairs that are so low that your diners are peering over the top of the table!

Just Right The way you decorate your table immediately sets the ambience – even before you have begun to dine.

A beautiful vase with fresh flowers is a great starting point. Vases are a great investment so push the boat out on a quality vase that you will keep forever. Then you don’t have to spend a fortune on “designer” flowers… wild flowers from the countryside or a few pickings from your garden should do the trick and give the desired effect.

When it comes to your dinnerware, research indicates that the weight, texture and colour of your tableware can actually affect your dining experience in terms of taste. Irregularshaped tableware and mixing and matching plates and bowls is now perfectly acceptable, especially in a casual setting, so the popular trend is towards less formality. Lighting can make or break the look and feel of your home. You might have the most beautiful furniture but, if the lighting is off, all your design efforts can go by the wayside. With the unbeatable Costa del Sol climate, swimming pools are an essential part of the home, and our special weather means that they can be enjoyed year-round. Swimming pools are a hugely important area, whether a property is being built from the beginning or the home is undergoing a renovation. In the development of the home, the swimming pool often becomes an axis on which the house and garden evolve.

DESIGN EVOLUTION Pool design has evolved greatly. In recent years the changes have accelerated, and all parts of the pool have developed, from the tiles, lighting, heating and technology to the shape. This evolution has allowed for every pool to be customised completely to the home owner’s taste.

Traditionally the pool used to be either a kidney shape or rectangular.

Now, with new trends, tastes and available technology, pools are being designed and built in all kinds of amazing shapes and sizes. Only your imagination can set the limits.

The double height effect can also be played with. From typical skimmer pools, where the water level is below the terrace or garden, to designs that lead to the water surface blending with the environment, the sea or the clouds, thanks to an “infinity” design. One of the most spectacular is the “glass infinity”, creating a wall of water and a certain wow factor.

CHOOSE THE WATER WISELY The conventional use of chlorine to clean water is in decline. More people are seeking healthier and more ecological water, minimising the need to add chemicals.

With saltwater pools, it is far easier to add disinfection systems which use electrolysis, hydrolysis, UV rays and advanced solutions such as Cu-Ag ionization. The advantages include: · Economically beneficial and easy to install, even if the pool is already built. · Prevents adverse health effects, from itching of eyes and skin to the green tinge chlorine can give to light-coloured hair. With saltwater, these effects disappear. · Protection of bathing suit fabric, and saltwater also favours tanning! · Requires minimal pool maintenance.

LIGHT IT UP To truly enjoy the Andalucian climate and swim all day and all night, lighting can be added to create a special effect unique to the pool. To save money and be more sustainably minded, LED lights are most commonly used, with the installation of hidden perimeter stripes under the edge to define the shape of the pool with an incredible light and with little consumption of energy. Even white light is no longer the only option; RGD

lights can illuminate the pool with colours and even change to the rhythm of music. A “starry sky” effect can also be achieved, via optical fibres spread across the bottom of the pool, as seen in Rolls-Royce interiors.

THE RIGHT COVER As with salt water systems, most of the swimming pools already made can have a heating system and a cover added to enjoy the wonderful pool all year around. There are even some covers safe for pets to walk across and thus facilitate peace of mind. More and more property owners are installing a cover to the pool, since it also reduces maintenance work.

CONTROL WITH TECHNOLOGY Technology has made so many things possible, and it is only natural that the power of our smart phones and home automation can control the swimming pool too.

Little by little, more and more aspects can be controlled from a device and wherever you are in the world: the hours of filtration and the lighting and even checking the water’s chemical values can be controlled with a few clicks on an app.

THE FINISHING FACTOR Long gone are the dark blue tiles, the dolphins at the bottom and the Greek style border; swimming pool tiles have been revolutionised. While the traditional mosaic tile is still in use, the sizes, colours, textures and shapes are unlimited. From crystal white-coloured tiles which give the water a spectacular turquoise colour, to dark-tiled, dark-grouting lagoon-style pools, just about anything is possible and, when perfectly integrated with the design of the home and garden, the result is truly stunning.

Large porcelain tiles are also in trend, and these provide the perfect situation for a shallower platform to be added to the design, to create a convenient area for children to play and to add loungers. This trend is causing pools to lean more towards straight-lined and right-angled designs, since using these large tiles makes it impossible to create a curved shape.

The 2020 edition of the Architecture MasterPrize attracted a record number of entries. The winners were selected by a jury panel of architects, academics and industry experts from more than 1,500 “exceptional and breathtaking” designs.

“The quality and content of projects entered into this fifth edition of the Architecture MasterPrize was spectacular,” said AMP president, Hossein Farmani. “This award continues to showcase the best of architecture from all around the globe.

It is an honour to present and reward this fantastic collection of innovative, creative and inspiring architectural projects.”

Two programs were open, celebrating the “finest architectural designs and products” of 2020: Design of the Year Award and Architectural Product Award. Four projects were chosen as top winners for “Design of the Year”/”New Discovery of the Year” in Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Design, and “Architectural Product of the Year”. The jury’s criteria was based on design excellence and creativity.

For the first time this year, the jury also awarded the “Best of Best” distinction to projects which were shortlisted for the Design of the Year title, with 70 projects receiving this special mention.

AND THE SAME LOVING Needs for Plants

Hopefully this will be less nerve-wracking than last year. Your plants have no idea what has happened, and they need love and care as always. You still have to do the same things: - Clean out dead leaves.

- Trim back old branches from trees and bushes.

- Rake the ground around your plants/trees/bushes to aerate the soil.

- Then add good mulch and fertiliser.

Your plants will love it – it’s their equivalent of having a good haircut!

Now let’s talk about the indoors. Plants have a wonderful knack of enhancing any room they are in. They can solve decorating problems and also are far cheaper than bringing in builders. You can use them as a room divider in so many ways, and trailing plants are especially ideal for this option. Mixing colours can make a neutral colour scheme so much brighter, and you can change them if and when you want.

Each variety has a definite character. Some are very exotic and, for drama in a plain palette, they are the best to go for. Emotive plants can set a sense of style and mood, which will help any room. Flamboyant: reds, oranges and bright yellows mixed with dark green leaves work well.

Dramatic: this means movement – some plants have that already but we have to push others a bit. Spiky leaves are always dramatic, and they should have an eye-catching shape.

Moody: all the dark reds, blues, purples and dark green or silvery leaves – they are gorgeous together.

Exotic and mysterious: orchids, of course, spring to mind (singly or grouped together), while bromeliads and bonsai are two other exotic examples.

Don’t forget to have the right pot or planter to set them off. Leave enough room for the plant to grow and always monitor drainage. Moving plants around helps them obtain maximum sunshine without letting them burn.

If you are not a good gardener, or simply do not have enough time, an enormous number of websites show you where to buy beautiful silk or faux plants. Some are so well made that they look absolutely natural. Don’t forget... plants uplift, soothe and simply let you enjoy their beauty.

DAREDEVILS OF YESTERYEAR Bugatti has launched a new “Les Légendes du Ciel“ edition to honour its racing drivers from last century’s “Golden Decade”. Many were former flying aces, daredevils and technically skilled pilots who, notes Bugatti, “flew without fear”.

Based on the Chiron Sport and limited to 20 vehicles, the edition references features of historic aircrafts in which Bugatti pilots gained their racing experience. In addition to the paintwork’s unusual colour, the vehicle includes a special full leather interior with hand-drawn sketches and diamond-cut aluminium.

“Bugatti has had close associations with aviation since the company was established more than 110 years ago,” says company president Stephan Winkelmann. “Many successful Bugatti racing drivers, such as Albert Divo, Robert Benoist and Bartolomeo ‘Meo’ Costantini, flew for the French Air Force; the French aviator legend Roland Garros privately drove a Bugatti Type 18 to be as fast on the road as in the air. It is therefore almost an obligation for us today to pay tribute to the legends of that time and dedicate a special edition to them.”

Company founder Ettore Bugatti reportedly admired the fearless character and technical expertise of his drivers, who were fascinated by high speeds and determined to master them. On the road, Bugatti’s racing drivers subsequently benefited from the experience they gained in aircraft cockpits.

In turn, according to Bugatti, they admired Ettore Bugatti for his talent as an engineer, and were fascinated by his agile, light and speedy vehicles, embodying on the road what their planes were in the sky. Roland Garros described him as the “incomparable artist who alone knows how to give life to steel”.

Ettore Bugatti had always been inspired by aviation. Around 1915, he designed aircraft engines and from 1937 he also developed an entire aircraft intended to break speed records, before the project was halted because of the outbreak of World War II. One particularly striking feature of the Chiron Sport “Les Légendes du Ciel” is its matt-grey “Gris Serpent” paintwork, a modern interpretation of the aircrafts’ exterior colour from the 1920s. The paintwork extends across the entire vehicle and is traversed from front to the rear via the extending rear spoiler with a high-contrast, white gloss centre stripe. The front wings are adorned with the “Les Légendes du Ciel“ logo, and the “Le BleuBlanc-Rouge” tricolour in blue, white and red decorates the front area of the side sills made of exposed black carbon fibre.

Also featuring a black gloss finish, the horseshoe-shaped radiator grille includes mesh made of laser-cut and deep-drawn aluminium, with the dynamic pattern of the stitched seams repeated on the leather seats – reminiscent of planes flying in formation in an air parade. The door entry lights project the edition logo onto the ground when the doors open.

The W16 engine cover is made of black exposed carbon fibre, and these lightweight components are contrasted by white lettering. Dominating the rear are black exposed carbon fibre and a black-coated exhaust trim cover made of 3D-printed, high-temperature-resistant Inconel.

The interior has also been designed to visually evoke aircraft from the past century. Bugatti uses fine “Gaucho” leather for the entire vehicle interior, and the light brown leather is reminiscent of natural leather in these aircraft. The natural material is contrasted by aluminium trims, an aluminium inlay with the logo “Les Légendes du Ciel” also found on the headrests, and special edition numbering (“1 of 20”). Bugatti optionally offers comfort seats and the glass roof “Sky View” – another reminder of how occupants could gaze into the sky like in open-top aircraft of the past century.

On the door panels there is a hand-sketched racing scene between the Nieuport 17 aircraft and a Bugatti Type 13. The Nieuport 17 was a French biplane aircraft built from 1916 that was hugely popular with pilots due to its reliability, speed, agility and manoeuvrability. The single-seater aircraft was powered by a nine-cylinder engine that delivered up to 130 PS. The Bugatti Type 13 was the first model to bear the name Bugatti. From 1910, the Type 13 impressed with its lightweight design, agility and high output for the time of more than 15 PS. More than 110 years ago, the “Pur Sang” (thoroughbred) reached speeds of almost 100 km/h and won many races on the track, laying the foundations for Bugatti’s racing success.

The perlée-finish, polished aluminium of the armrest tray and the centre console insert are also reminiscent of the historic racing cars.

With a W16 engine and capacity of 8.0 litres, the Chiron Sport “Les Légendes du Ciel” delivers 1,500 PS and 1,600 newton metres of torque. Its maximum speed is electronically limited at 420 km/h.

Bugatti was due to start production of the Chiron Sport “Les Légendes du Ciel” towards the end of 2020. The edition will be limited to 20 units, at a price of €2.88 million (net) each.

Portugal has been gaining in popularity with tourists in recent years thanks to its stunning landscape and beaches, superb gastronomy and wealth of history. We visited the north of this once underrated member of the Iberian Peninsula to stay in the exquisite M Maison Particulière hotel situated in the heart of Porto’s historical centre – an area which was classified as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO in 1996 – to find out more about this fascinating city. From there we travelled across the Portuguese border to the north of Spain where we experienced a rural staycation in the tranquil area of Tomiño, in Pontevedra province in the autonomous region of Galicia, staying in the newly-opened Alto da Pousa bungalows.

PERUSING PORTO… M Maison Particulière, or simply “M” as it is affectionately referred to by the owner, is a 16th century building that has been respectfully renovated into a 10-bedroom boutique hotel. Each room has its own individual personality, with some facing the prestigious main street of Largo São Domingos.

A melange of different décor styles, but mainly baroque and rococo, runs throughout the property, with wood wall panelling, marble and wood floors, stucco wall and ceiling mouldings, tapestries, heavy velvets and glorious suspended lamps all adding to the overall opulent feel to the property.

The reception area is a great indicator of what you will discover beyond. You are met with a magnificent chandelier looming over a lounge area comprising a leather chesterfield and heavy wooden chairs upholstered in velvet textile, in front of a Parisian marble fireplace. The natural light is limited but the ambience is perfectly set thanks to the various ornate table lamps dotted around the room and, of course, the dimmed light from the chandelier.

During the day the two young ladies who share reception duties attend to your every need – their enthusiasm to impart their knowledge of this historic building and the city in which it resides is truly captivating and creates more intrigue to the stories that this property holds within its walls In this privately-owned boutique hotel, every element has been personally chosen by the owners themselves, inspired by their own travels and passions. They visit every month to check on their loyal and long-serving staff, and continue to add such personal touches as choosing flowers to artistically arrange in wonderful ornate vases.

Behind the reception is the dining room where breakfast is served. Diners can sit under (yet) another jaw-dropping chandelier around a single large dining table with a centrepiece of silver candelabras and cut crystal glassware, in an intimate room adorned with striped red and black wallpaper and a large 16th century painting. During breakfast, soothing classical music plays while you enjoy some of the many options available from their HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

The bedroom we chose to stay in was Suite V, which had a small balcony looking out over the city. The double-glazed windows blocked out any noise emanating from the charming street below when we were sleeping. However, we greatly enjoyed talented street buskers who performed directly below us, singing over the hubbub of locals going about their business while tourists meandered the streets soaking up the atmosphere.

There is a lift but we chose to ascend to the room up a winding staircase adorned with endless paintings of kings of queens of Portugal, and when we reached our destination we were met with nothing less than luxurious splendour. Our spacious suite had a bed fit for a king, with a resplendent headboard and the bed itself ladened with a matching heavy velvet blanket over the highest quality cotton bed linen. A Parisian marble fireplace and small lounge area with a large single slab marble wet-room were other impressive features of the room, among many – but you get the idea…

Porto as a city has a lot to offer. The hotel is in the heart of the charming old town but is also very close to the Douro River, where live entertainers also show-off their talents and the Ponte Luis I bridge crosses over to the Vila Nova de Gaia, another interesting quarter of the Celtic city which existed under the Roman Empire and was where merchants traded port wine for centuries.

In the old town itself you can take the tourist bus around the city, or alternatively take the tuk-tuk (otherwise known by their trade name, Tuking People), which is a fun way to learn about the city as you move around the cathedral, waterfront and important monuments.

The city has become a highly recognised and exciting area for gourmands, and rightly so due to its privileged location – rich in exceptional ingredients from both the land and the sea. There are creative restaurants aplenty, and your restaurant bill won’t give you a heart attack at the end of the meal. Try typical dishes such as bacalhau à brás (salted cod, eggs and potato) or chouriço à bombeiro (grilled spicy sausages cooked over a flame, usually at the table) and you won’t be disappointed.

Interesting places to visit in the city are the famous bookstore Livraria Lello, the Sao Bento railway station, the Palacio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange Palace) and the Museu de Arte Sacra da Igreja de Santo Ildefonso, but at every corner you turn you stumble across something new and fascinating in a city that seems to always keep on giving.

(+351) 227 661 40 / m@m-porto.com / www.m-porto.com GLORIOUS GALICIA For the next part of the trip, we ventured across the Portuguese-Spanish border to the north of Spain into Galicia where we headed out of the cityscape and into the countryside to enjoy a rural stay in a bungalow in Alta da Pousa in Tomiño. This municipality is within the province of Pontevedra, close to the Miño river. A newly-opened rural resort, it was the brainchild of the owner and father of the charming young manageress, Antía.

This father and daughter team, who also own Tapería A Carla on the same grounds and serve wonderful locally-sourced gastronomy, offer a very friendly service that goes beyond any humble country retreat.

Their dishes are traditional but beautifully presented on contemporary plates. We especially enjoyed their Galician octopus with potato and paprika, buttery scallops with fresh herbs, and pork with goat’s cheese and dreamy sweet sauce, and happily indulged in their homemade desserts and wonderful local wines – hic!

The newly-built and extremely comfortable bungalows feature a modern décor with open-plan kitchen, lounge area, bedroom and en-suite bathroom. An interesting feature is that each bungalow has its own hot tub for an extra touch of luxury, topped-off with an overhead glass ceiling to enjoy the skylight at night – while their state-of-the-art heaters quickly warm up the rooms if the evenings are cold.

There are six bungalows in total. and each one is named after a variety of grape that is grown in the vineyard situated in front of them, giving appropriate acknowledgement to their surroundings.

Tomiño is a place where you can really disconnect and appreciate nature, enjoying leisurely walks in the countryside, and if you miss the town life, Vigo is just three-quarters of an hour away by car.

The popular Playwright restaurant, situated in Elviria (Marbella), has had a dramatic makeover and, as a result, has become the talk of the town. Inspired by the highly-acclaimed Madrid restaurant and bar Amazónico, the décor is bold and gregarious with a plethora of tropical decorative features making you feel as if you are entering into an exotic Amazonian jungle.

During lockdown earlier in 2020, enterprising restaurateurs Marc and Penny Quinlan put their heart and soul into the project, turning it into a jaw-dropping dining experience to excite all the senses.

The menu is very well thought-out and balanced, and the prices are very reasonable. They consider themselves to be “International/Asian Fusion”, offering the likes of 12-hour slow-cooked aromatic beef cheek, blackened and spiced wild salmon, crispy caramelised Peking duck salad, seared king scallops and indulgent homemade desserts. On Sundays they offer an English roast dinner which always seems to draw a crowd (with social distancing fully respected, of course).

The creativity in the presentation of every dish is certainly impressive, and the design flair doesn’t just stop at the plate but is present all around the 128

restaurant – with decorative flamingos and monkeys, lavish wallpaper and art deco chairs. Everywhere you turn, you notice something new, so it is a very “Instagramable” venue!

The Playwright encourages you to forget about the mundane world outside and allow yourself to be transported into a whimsical and fantastical universe that certainly puts a smile on your face. The waiters are very warm and friendly, tending to your every need, and there is live music from Thursday through to Sunday, adding to the buzzy ambience of the place and making it a great venue to meet with friends. If you just want to soak up the atmosphere at the large bar, try one of their cocktails, each served in a fun way with the likes of Tiki mugs and sparklers among other interesting accoutrements.

If the name Peter Sisseck does not ring a bell, then no wine lover cannot have heard of Pingus, one of Spain’s premium wines in quality and price.

Sisseck is from Denmark, a country where the only wines grown are those using the same grapes as in New Zealand, and then just since 2009.

Quite what made him decide to go and work in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain is not clear, although his uncle did import French wines into Denmark in the 1980s. He did, however, become qualified enough to land his first job there as technical director of Hacienda Monasterio, which has always been a landmark brand even though it is geographically a few kilometres outside the official Denomination of Origen frontiers.

Sisseck quickly decided that he was in the right area, and it was not long before he was setting up his own project in an old four-and-a-half-hectare vineyard near Burgos. This would turn out to be the birthplace of the legendary Pingus, the 5,000 bottles of which start with grapes from those long-established vines.

Even the early vintages must have been outstanding, as wine critic Robert Parker tasted the first Pingus in 1995 and awarded it 95 points, at that time the highest score ever given to a Spanish wine.

The wine has transformed over the years, and Sisseck’s original love affair with new oak would seem to be over. The current vintages are matured increasingly in used oak barrels, resulting in a less spectacular first taste but one more in keeping with current consumer trends.

If you are lucky enough to find a bottle (nearly all online distributors show it as “agotado” – or “sold out”) it will cost you around €1,150 for the 2017 vintage and €1,550 for the 2014. There is a less expensive stablemate, which by any standards is a superb wine, Flor de Pingus, of which 10 times the quantity is made – enabling it to be sold for around €115 for the 2018 vintage.

Yes, a very high price by any standards, but it is probably among Spain’s

top 10 great red wines so, even if you only taste it once in a decade, you may understand what the fuss is all about. It is perhaps Sisseck’s third “Pingus leg” that is arousing most interest among erudite aficionados these days, Psi, a project that gets local growers to concentrate on old vines on small land holdings and, turning its back on oak in favour of cement tanks, involves increasing usage of the Garnacha grape.

Restlessness is his middle name, and it is hard to see what Sisseck would do if he were not forever involved in new projects. Even the tragic death of his daughter in a road accident did not avert his ambition to keep producing unusual and excellent wines.

A low-key believer in biodynamic growing techniques, he considers his most important mission is to teach people how to grow crops with sustainable procedures. He is very much a believer in the increasingly accepted theory that we are merely the caretakers of the land we farm, caring for it in trust for future generations. One example of this is his commitment to use horses in the vineyards instead of machines.

As a mark of his success and acceptance within Spain’s winemaking community, Sisseck has been appointed to the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council. He also acts as consultant for a Catalan bodega, and with a partner owns a vineyard in Bordeaux.

Most interesting of all is his current involvement in the sherry area, and he has been quoted as saying that the solera system, the standard sherryageing technique, is one of the wonders of the wine world. Indeed, his first sherry has just hit the market. Obviously a man for all wine lovers to watch…

LONG COVID AND PHYSIOTHERAPY

Rehabilitation is unequivocally recognised to improve functioning, breathlessness, muscle strength and quality of life. We don´t presently know what the needs will be for people recovering from COVID-19. However, we can surely estimate that there will be significant rehabilitation needs, particularly for those with other underlying diseases.

We are also beginning to understand more about the health issues of people with Long COVID. These are people, often young and healthy, who may have contracted COVID-19 weeks or even months before but are still displaying symptoms.

In one study of 143 Italian COVID-19 sufferers. As many as 87 per cent still had at least one symptom six weeks later.

The severity of the initial infection appears unrelated to the possibility of a lingering illness, making it difficult to predict who will have long-term problems. Because the SARS-CoV-2 virus can attack many different organs of the body, the symptoms of Long COVID-19 are diverse.

Some suffer from a deep sense of fatigue unresolved by rest or sleep; for others brain fog and concentration are problems. In some cases, there may be residual neurological issues such as headaches and dizziness and persistent loss of smell or taste. For many, breathing problems and coughs can persist for months and, if someone was unwell with a severe initial COVID-19 infection, it is highly likely they will be suffering from muscle weakness, of the limbs and the breathing muscles.

Physiotherapy can be effective for many of these problems, which is why the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy is campaigning that everyone has a #RighttoRehab.

NEW INSIGHT INTO THE BRAIN Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Some very good news to report when it comes to battling Alzheimer’s disease. A novel form of an Alzheimer’s protein found in the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord indicates what stage of the disease a person is in, according to a study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Tau tangles are thought to be toxic to neurons, and their spread through the brain foretells the death of brain tissue and cognitive decline. Tangles appear as the early, asymptomatic stage of Alzheimer’s develops into the symptomatic stage.

The discovery of so-called microtubule binding region tau (MTBR tau) in the cerebrospinal fluid could lead to a way to diagnose people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease, before they have symptoms or when their symptoms are still mild. It also could accelerate efforts to find treatments for the devastating disease, by providing a relatively simple way to gauge whether an experimental treatment slows or stops the spread of toxic tangles.

The study, which was published in December in the journal Brain, may lead to significant advances in combating the disease. “If we can translate this into the clinic, we’d have a way of knowing whether a person’s symptoms are due to tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease and where they are in the disease course, without needing to do a brain scan,” said study senior author Dr. Randall J. Bateman, a professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (Missouri). “As a physician, this information is invaluable in informing patient care, and in the future to guide treatment decisions.”

Alzheimer’s begins when a brain protein called amyloid starts forming plaques in the brain. During this amyloid stage, which can last two decades or more, people show no signs of cognitive decline. However, soon after tangles of tau begin to spread in the neurons, people start exhibiting confusion and memory loss, and brain scans show increasing atrophy of brain tissue.

Tau tangles can be detected by positron emission tomography (PET) brain scans, but brain scans are time-consuming, expensive and not available everywhere. Dr. Bateman and his colleagues are developing diagnostic blood tests for Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers analysed cerebrospinal fluid from 100 people in their 70s. The researchers found that levels of a specific form (MTBR tau 243) in the cerebrospinal fluid were elevated in the people with Alzheimer’s and that it increased the more advanced a

person’s cognitive impairment and dementia were.

CUP OF HOT CHOCOLATE MAY BOOST BRAIN POWER Grab a cup of hot chocolate the next time you have a taxing problem to tackle. Increased consumption of flavanols, which are a group of molecules which occur naturally in fruit and vegetables, may increase your mental agility, according to new research at the University of Birmingham in England. A team in the University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences has found that adults given a cocoa drink containing high levels of flavanols were able to complete certain cognitive tasks more efficiently than when drinking a non-flavanol enriched-drink.

The study participants underwent non-invasive brain imaging to measure blood oxygenation levels in the brain. Working with experts at the University of Illinois in the United States, the researchers showed that participants who had consumed the flavanol-rich drink produced a faster and greater increase in blood oxygenation levels in response to artificially elevated levels of CO2.

Flavanols, a sub-group of plant flavonoids, are present in cocoa, grapes, apples, tea, berries and other foods. They are known to have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health, but their effects on brain health are not well understood. This study, published in Scientific Reports, involved cocoa, but flavanols are extremely common in a wide range of fruit and vegetables. “By better understanding the cognitive benefits of eating these food groups, as well as the wider cardiovascular benefits, we can offer improved guidance to people about how to make the most of their dietary choices,” said lead study author Dr. Catarina Rendeiro, from the University of Birmingham’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences.

In the cognitive tests, the researchers found significant differences in the speed and accuracy with which volunteers completed the higher complexity tasks. The volunteers who had taken the flavanol-enriched drink performed the tasks 11 per cent faster on average. “Our results showed a clear benefit for the participants taking the flavanol-enriched drink, but only when the task became sufficiently complicated,” said Dr. Rendeiro.

M A R I LY N M A NS O N EXHIBITION AT L A T É R M I C A La Térmica Málaga is hosting the first world exhibition featuring American musician Marilyn Manson, by British photographer Ralph Perou. Admission is free and the show continues until 22 January at the provincial government’s contemporary culture centre. “Marilyn Manson: 21 Years in Hell” is a review of Manson’s most iconic moments, featuring snapshots taken by Perou over the past two decades, as his main photographer since 1968.

The photographs are conceptual portraits and works “behind the scenes” – or, as Perou jokes, “behind the obscene” – and they are also published in a book by Reel Art Press that contains more than 350 photographs of the musician taken by the same photographer. Most of those being shown at La Térmica have never been seen published on paper before, and none of them have been exhibited previously in a photographic display.

Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga is showing Miki Leal’s “Gente conocida/Derecho a entrar” (“Familiar People/Right to Enter”) exhibition until 21 February. Launched in December and curated by Alberto Martín, the exhibition comprises nearly 100 works including paintings on paper and ceramics. They have been created over the past 15 years, some especially for this show, and they cover a fascinating array of themes… samurais, still-lifes, jazz, tennis, cinema, dandies, books, landscapes, portraits and bananas. According to the contemporary arts centre, Leal’s pieces “invite viewers to interpret and decipher the different plots and secrets they hold”.

The title of the exhibition refers to “a superficial or profound relationship be-

tween texts, pictorial genres and influences of painters that generate an ongoing dialogue with Leal’s works, establishing ties with those ‘familiar people’”.

The Sevilla artist defines his working method as anarchic. “He begins with a very basic sketch and then writes the work as if it were a script for starting from a blank canvas on which he paints from the ground up, adding layer after layer of heavily thinned paint to create glazes that give the piece a different personality. Martin Ålund, a Swedish artist based in Stockholm, is presenting a new exhibition at Wadström Tönnheim Gallery, and his fresh series of paintings “The Bipolar Suite”. This series arises from the Otherworld theme, which involves juxtaposing extremes through the use of diptychs and creating a charge and establishing a contact.

It is, he explains, “like creating energy, an interaction where one touches upon both origin and downfall at the same time. The theme Otherworld deals with the interface between different realities. Where does the insanity, the imagination and the irrational begin and end? How can one move between the different realities and find experiences, as well as messages, that one alternates between?

“I think of Alice in Wonderland, shamanism, alchemy, Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as romantic myths of the artist as magician, madman and messenger. I also often think of how the magic and the irrational can both be a means to escape, and a way to grasp the unfathomable.”

Wadström Tönnheim Gallery describes its mission as “examining the idea of the painterly, be it also through related media such as photography, sculpture, installations, video and drawing, in order to understand and to promote the direction of painting and its relevance to contemporary visual culture.”

The exhibition opens on Friday 15 January at 6.30pm and continues until 14 March 2021.

STRONG COMMUNITY SPIRIT AT UNITED NATIONALITIES SUMMIT Community leaders, charities and businesses all came together for the fifth United Nationalities of Marbella Summit, held at The Harbour restaurant in Marbella’s marina. A client recently visited our law office in Marbella with a question regarding which property works at a home rented in Spain he could carry out and which ones he could not. Having clarified the client’s doubts, we thought it would be a good idea to give readers some guidance on what type of works at a home rented in Spain can be carried out and by whom.

First, we should clarify that we are referring to those works undertaken in a home that has been rented in Spain, not in properties for other nonhousing uses: for example, commercial premises or garages.

The urban leasing law in Spain differentiates between conservation and improvement works. With regard to conservation works, the law notes that “the landlord in Spain is obliged to carry out, without the right to raise the rent, all the repairs that are necessary to maintain the property in the conditions of habitability to serve the agreed use”, unless this deterioration appears as a consequence derived from the misuse of the tenant or people who live with them.

For works performed by the lessor (owner), the following issues have to be taken into account: – They are necessary works so the property can be inhabited in suitable conditions.

– The costs of these works are assumed by the landlord, unless the deterioration has been caused by a negligent action of the tenant.

– The lessee must allow the lessor or the technicians that they have contracted to carry out the work to access the property, and the work can be postponed until the end of the rental contract, provided that it is not necessary or urgent.

– These maintenance works cannot result in an increase in rent.

– If it is necessary to spend more than 20 days to carry out the maintenance work, the tenant is entitled to a reduction in rent in proportion to the part of the property that cannot be used.

– The lessee must notify the lessor as soon as possible of any breakdowns or damage and may proceed with this type of conservation work, provided that they notify the lessor, and may subsequently claim the paid amounts.

On the other hand, improvement works would be those that are not indispensable for living in the property but could affect the quality of life of the 138

people who live there. These would be works that affect the hygiene, salubrity or comfort of the property. According to the Spanish Urban Leasing Law, the following are characteristic of these improvement works: – Works supported by the tenant and paid for by the owner of the dwelling in Spain.

– The landlord must notify the tenant in writing, at least three months before the work is to be carried out, about its nature, commencement, duration and cost. The lessee may withdraw from the rental contract during a period of one month from the date of notification by the lessor. The lease shall terminate within two months of the date of notice of termination, and during that period the lessor may not commence work.

– If the tenant agrees to these improvement works, they are entitled to a reduction in rent in proportion to the part of the property that cannot be used.

Finally, Article 23 of the law talks about “Tenant’s Works”, noting that the tenant cannot carry out works that “modify the configuration of the property” without the written consent of the landlord. If you are a tenant, always request in writing the landlord’s authorisation to carry out any kind of work, or at least inform the landlord that you are going to start them. If you do not have written authorisation from the landlord, the rental contract could be terminated.

In cases where there is no authorisation for works at a rented home in Marbella, at the end of the contract the lessor may demand that the property be restored to its previous state or alternatively maintain the modifications, without the lessee being able to claim any compensation, nor any indemnity for the work that was carried out at the time.

It is always necessary to study each specific case and evaluate the type of works that are carried out within a rented property, and our professional team can advise you on these matters.
