EDITORIAL Over the past 12 months, home cooking has become even more important than before for most people – even those not normally comfortable in a kitchen preparing feasts for the family. By now, many of us would no doubt have expected to be enjoying a rather more “normal” spring after a year of COVID. That is… savouring languid lunches by the sea with the whole family (at the same table!), dining out with friends late into the evening in our favourite restaurants, and entertaining large gatherings at home around the barbecue. Remarkably, however, the pandemic will still be dominating our lives for a second summer holiday season, and the adjustments we have had to make since early-2020 will continue. That means more pouring over cookbooks, binge-watching Masterchef and conjuring up new dishes to keep our families both well-nourished and not too underwhelmed by our culinary shortcomings. It also means continuing to experiment and enhance our creative cooking skills in order to impress dinner party guests – no matter how many might be allowed, per sitting, from May when the Spanish “State of Alarm” is expected to be lifted. Whether your home cooking exploits entail head chef duties, sous chef assistance or simply being an appreciative “official taster”, the kitchen will remain a priority this summer, and well into autumn and presumably winter. 6

This is, therefore, just the right time to think about at least upgrading key parts of your kitchen space, if a more elaborate overall revamp is not possible. One growing trend in recent months is the transformation of traditional kitchens into more professionally-appointed gastronomic hubs. In addition to being extended over a greater space, and incorporating a special area for light eating and informal socialising, today’s most impressive kitchens are equipped with such cutting-edge domestic appliances as titanium induction cooktops and blast chillers (or shock freezers). To help you as you give your kitchen a makeover, our Décor & Design section includes comprehensive coverage of latest trends and new-style furniture options for both the kitchen and the dining room – which tend to converge into one communal space in many homes these days. Even partially blending into the living room... where guests can enjoy an afternoon tea, pre-dinner aperitif or post-prandial digestif. However you upgrade your kitchen this year, we hope its warm embrace provides you with some well-deserved delectation during these difficult times – ideally with a sprinkling of summer fun also added to the spice mix.

PARADISE As we are now in the throes of spring and entering into the summer months, it is time to assess our outdoor furniture. After all, this year many of us will be spending summer at home instead of embarking on unnecessary travels. So as our outdoor space now has much greater importance, why not invest in furniture and accessories to make your garden or terrace a little oasis? You will then feel truly relaxed and comfortable, with furniture that will stand the test of time no matter how much rain or shine it has to endure.

When did Sybartum open and why did you choose Spain as your location? We inaugurated our showroom last September, in the midst of the pandemic and at a time of great uncertainty. Our intention was to open in April but obviously this wasn’t possible. With a lot of effort, determination and affection we managed to open on 3 September. Sybartum is a family business with a history dating back more than 30 years. Bearing in mind the adverse situation in our country of origin, we decided to move to Spain and we fell in love with the Costa del Sol. In love with its beaches and landscapes, but above all with its people and diversity. We have discovered a lovely community where nationalities from all over the world converge. Although they are foreigners like us, they share the same taste for this special part of Spain and, together with the locals, they have opened their doors and hearts to us, making us feel right at home. Tell us more about the concept of your showroom on the Mijas-Fuengirola Road… Sometimes we actually feel that our showroom is an authentic exhibition of delights and wonders of the world rather than just a furniture store. Many visitors compare it to visiting a museum. Each of our pieces is unique, handmade by artisans using the most high-quality and natural materials. We are dedicated to traveling around the world finding wonderful items in every corner and personally choosing each piece that we import for our exhibition. In our 1,200 square metres of showroom you can view expansive solid-wood dining rooms, hand-carved Balinese beds, recycled wooden sideboards richly impregnated with tales from the past, modern and stylish natural linen sofas, and beautiful “capelas” (caveshaped figurines) comprising amethysts, agate geodes and natural fossils. What are the main services that you offer? At Sybartum our main goal is to ensure customer happiness. We understand that choosing a coffee table for your living room is not simply choosing a piece of furniture. Today, more than ever, your home has to be a special place where you feel at peace, happy and in harmony. So we advise you at all times throughout a viewing, and help you find a special piece that you can fall in love with and delight in seeing every day in your living room, or where you gather with your loved ones to share meals, to sunbathe on the terrace or to rest every day after work. We help clients with the design of their new remodelling projects, and we adapt our furniture to their needs and measurements. And we always make sure each piece is left in its place ready to be used immediately. Can you tell us more about where you source your products? All our products are made using natural materials, from ecological and sustainable sources. Our products are sourced from spectacular corners of the world. Almost all of our furniture comes from Indonesia and our minerals are from South America. Our woollen rugs are authentic Moroccan Beni Ourain, our jute cushions and rugs and other natural fibres are from India, our woven rugs are African, and so on... What is it you love most about your job? One of the things I love most about my work is the certainty of knowing that we can offer a unique and special product to each of our clients. The satisfaction that we see among people in each home when we complete a delivery and, above all, seeing our clients return... that is when we know that we are doing our job well. Of course, travelling to exotic countries to look for our products is also a super fun part of my job. In conclusion… At Sybartum you will find a pleasant family ambience, and be looked after by the owners, providing everything we can to help you create the home of your dreams. FRENCH RIVIERA COLLECTION

52

MAY & JUNE 2021

Fabrics HL74.indd 52

26/04/2021 11:59

Misia Paris take you on a journey to the French Riviera with this emotive new collection. The beautiful Mediterranean coastline of the Côte d’Azure offers sparkling blue waters, lush vegetation, intriguing coves and charming little side streets. It is also home to luxury mansions, private yachts and lavish casinos, and hosts the likes of the F1 Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival, thus attracting the jet set from all over the world to visit this very special place. The new Misia Paris collection is comprehensive and reflects all aspects that the Mediterranean hotspot has to offer, an area that is rich not just in terms of its wealth, but also in its natural beauty and culture. Featured in the collection are large floral and plant motifs, the use of natural fabrics such as cotton and linen, glamorous faux-fur, and fabrics with lustrous finishes for a more opulent look and feel.

Opposite Page Cinq Terres is a corduroy velvet with a silky touch and a supple drape, available in nine stunning colours. The fabric has been cut and texturised using the Shearing Green Design technique, which reflects the light and gives the material a shimmery finish. Thanks to its high Martindale, Cinq Terres is ideal for curtains and heavy-duty seating. This Page Above Left Created and dyed on natural French linen in the Hauts-de-France region, the linen basketweave Rayol is a fabric that few producers are still able to weave, given the quality of the yarns used. The

material features a stone-wash finishing which gives it its soft touch and supple drape, so it is ideally suited for curtaining, while its high Martindale makes it equally suitable for conventional upholstery. Above Right The Rêverie Persane is a looped cut and uncut velvet jacquard, made using traditional methods. Twenty-seven colours of yarn are used to create its large Art Deco motif with an oriental influence (kilim). It comes in two exclusive colours: Arabesque, the most colourful with celadon blue, orange and powder pink; and Carbone, blending exquisite touches of blue and gold. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Top A Provençal garden is encapsulated in Misia’s Parfums du Midi fabric, which depicts colourful flowers. This cotton satin, coloured in the Misia Paris workshops, is available in three colours, Ivory, Carbon and Bronze, all having shared and subtle touches of frost, gold and terracotta. The digital printing on mercerised cotton satin gives the fabric its shimmer and lustre, and is ideal for curtains and upholstery. Above Left Riviera du Levant is a cotton and linen jacquard with a natural and authentic look, like hand-embroidered cloth. Its loose cream-coloured threads result from using a wavy cotton yarn, which

is left longer and then trimmed, creating a textured geometric pattern in the weave. Ideal for both curtains and seating, this jacquard is available in three exclusive colours, Ivory, Arabesque and Carbon. Above Right The Azur Cotonneux is a beautifully-made and realistic faux-fur. It has a long, silky, frizzy, shiny texture similar to the fleece of an Angora goat, which is the origin of the exquisite Mohair wool. Available in four colours, Ivory, Carbon, Bronze and Misia Blue (the brand’s signature colour), Azur Cotonneux is ideal for throws, cushions and decorative furnishings.

Misia is available from Alison Design Studio in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana 73 in Nueva Andalucía (www.alisonbethellcollins.com), Gonzalez Casaus in CC Camoján Corner in Marbella (www.gonzalezcasaus.com) and Arte del Lusso (curtains only) in San Pedro de Alcántara (www. artedellusso.es). WALLPAPER In recent years, decorating our walls with wallpaper has become hugely popular. There has especially been a massive trend for exotic prints, with the likes of flamingos, botanicals and tropical birds featured on many a statement wall – and this trend does not look like it is going to fade away fast. After all, the unrelenting desire to bring the outdoors into the home is easily achieved by simply hanging wallpaper. Some designs might look dated, such as floral prints or wallpapers with wording, but the great advantage of wallpaper is that it is so versatile and can be easily removed once you’ve become bored with one style. Here are some ideas…

LOUNGING in style The living room has to perform on so many levels... it needs to be ready to impress for entertaining guests as well as be cosy and comfortable for everyday relaxing. Getting the right balance can be tricky. It is tempting to buy a huge sofa and coffee table and feel that the job is done, but this can suck the life out of a room – leaving it looking cumbersome and awkward. Well-sized furniture gives the room a good sense of space and proportion. Invest in some small tables that can be moved around easily so that, when you have guests over, they can conveniently rest their glass or plate on furniture that is practical but also discreet. Good storage keeps the room uncluttered, and don’t be afraid to show a bit of your personality with a piece of artwork or statement chair. Here are some ideas for inspiration…

ELEVATING THE EVERYDAY IN PERSONALISED HOME DÉCOR

INTERVIEW WITH JULIA RODRÍGUEZ PARAJA – CEO OF SANDON

Tell us about Antima Group’s background and how it has metamorphosed over the years... Antima Group is a family-run collection of companies with Norwegian roots. Its interests range from homes, interior design and furniture to lifestyle articles and entertainment. Family-run and passion-driven... The original company is Antima, which develops bespoke and high-end homes around the world. We’ve always said that Antima doesn’t just build houses, it creates homes, and this is at the very core of every project we take on. We only accept a few handpicked properties each year, mainly because we believe that each home is special and possesses its own soul, and we want to capture that for each of our clients. From the moment our clients step through the front door, we want them to feel the comfort of simply arriving home, which is why we sell our properties fully furnished and individually decorated, and each with the signature Antima style that makes us stand out. After our experience in the residential market we noticed that, during open house events and showings, many of our visitors were as interested in the furniture as they were in the property. All the furniture in Antima is custommade for each home. It became apparent that not only did our clients appreciate the quality of our furniture, but they also wanted the freedom to personalise and customise their own furniture, and to be able to choose 86

the fabric or the wood colour for their pieces. So now we have created Sandon, to fulfill a demand we saw in the market, thanks to our discerning clients who appreciate and understand the beauty of quality products, attention to detail and artisan works. You recently opened your online furniture shop (www.sandon.es). How would you describe the concept? Sandon is more than just furniture. We offer highly customisable furniture which combines craft, comfort and style – all available in our online shop. All the furniture is made in Spain by Spanish craftsmen. With Sandon.es, clients can take inspiration from our gallery pictures and customise their pieces, choosing from a wide range of different wood finishes and exquisite fabrics, and a variety of special detailing. This makes each piece unique and personal for each client. Every time a client purchases a Sandon furniture item, we want them to experience that extra feeling of comfort, and the high-end quality touch. Our theme is “Elevating the everyday”, and that is exactly how we want our clients to feel about a Sandon product. How would you define your furniture, and what is your approach to design? We think Sandon furniture is suitable for many homes and styles. Our fur-

niture could just as easily fit in a cabin or contemporary city apartment as it could in a country estate or a cosy, casual beach house. Our pieces are timeless, contemporary classics. Simple lines and soft tones that work with different key pieces in a home – but with the added comfort you’d expect from a Sandon custom-made item of furniture. All our furniture is made in Spain by craftsmen who follow some of the original artisan procedures that are often lost nowadays. We strongly believe in offering our clients the opportunity to customise their own furniture to make it their own – and that every piece is a quality and comfortable item of their choosing.

able to see our collections, lifestyle articles, fabrics and woods, and learn more about us.

As Sandon is an online shop, will it be possible for clients to view, touch and feel the items somewhere? We have worked hard to create a website that transmits all these feelings to our customers. There are videos showing the procedures involved in creating each piece, and we have tried to capture the feel of the textures by zooming in on the details of the fabrics. We have an extensive gallery with different interior pictures of projects with our furniture, so the client can see each furniture in different spaces. We’re really excited to be opening a very special Sandon HQ and showroom in Marbella in the forthcoming future, where clients will soon be

In conclusion... Very soon we will launch some lifestyle products such as blankets, towels and candles, all with that special Sandon touch and feel. It is something people were inquiring about, and also something we are very passionate to do.

What other services do you offer? We have an in-house team who work on special interior design projects. It is an area that is closely related to Antima’s expertise, and we already have some incredibly interesting projects all around the world. We can advise clients during every part and stage of the interior design process, from mocking up the floorplan, advising about colours and choosing materials to furnishing and styling the entire project.

STUNNING WOOD FINISHES INTERVIEW WITH TIM MEEUS – OWNER OF MT INTERIORS

88

26/04/2021 12:40

Tell us about MT Interiors in terms of the services you offer and the specialised team you employ... We are a young and passionate team who can finish interiors from A to Z. In our workshop in Málaga we manufacture everything that has to do with wood: cupboards, kitchens, furniture, wooden parquet floors, interior doors, wall coverings – basically any finishing to make your interior perfect. We also supply and install all kinds of decoration, and finish walls with beautiful painting techniques or microcement. From where did your passion for carpentry originate? It’s been 22 years since I graduated as a carpenter. During my school years, I discovered my passion and the feeling for beautiful interiors and finishes. When I started working at a very reputable company in Belgium, I also gained professional knowledge and my passion developed even more. When going about designing a space, what main factors do you take into account? For us it is important to build an interior to the client’s requirements. So we adapt to the wishes of the customer and adjust with our expertise where

necessary. We do not follow trends, because trends are ephemeral. What we try to do is to form a stylish, but above all timeless, interior in any style. You have designed many beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. What particular trends have you seen that stand out in this market? As already mentioned, we do not really look for a trend, because they are often for short periods of time. We do notice with our clientele that they want to bring a certain peace and holiday atmosphere into their homes on the Costa del Sol. Fresh colours and light wood tones are still the most important colours and/or materials. In conclusion... We design, create and finish projects down to the last detail. With our interior architect Evelyn, and eight professional craftsmen, we have a solid and dedicated team that you can rely on. MT interiors Málaga Calle Alcalde Guillermo Rein 112, Málaga Tel. TASTEFUL KITCHENS The perfect kitchen needs to be not only visually appealing but also highly functional. With kitchen appliances becoming so hi-tech, home cooks have never had it so good. A new kitchen is a major investment, but updating a countertop, cupboard doors or even the faucets can be a great (and less expensive) way to give your kitchen a new lease of life. Efficient storage results in clear worktops, so good shelving or cabinetry can instantly make the space less cluttered and more aesthetically pleasing.

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DECORATION THAT TRANSFORMS DREAMS AND HOPES INTO REALITY Interview with Lucia Casaus Rabaneda and Alexis González Hidalgo – Owners of Gonzalez Casaus

Origins and General Business Concept Gonzalez Casaus is a team led by interior designer Lucia Casaus Rabaned and architect Alexis González Hidalgo. They met while starting their training in Sevilla and, after travelling different paths, joined forces in Marbella and decided to found their own studio to create one of the best tandems possible in the sector: interior design and architecture, as part of the same concept. The main key to the company’s projects is this union of two disciplines. Their projects are functional, creative, striking and avant-garde. They adapt to the needs and tastes of clients, but always with a personal touch. This is reflected in one of their latest projects, Villa Tulum, a tropical-inspired villa where they had total creative freedom. The project adds a twist to the Costa del Sol’s current trend towards minimalist architecture. The concept was developed with the idea of providing a seamless flow from outside to inside, creating the sensation of an open interior space. The aim, together with the design of the plot and taking into account its irregular topography, was to create a private oasis. Villa Tulum comprises multi-functional spaces that facilitate different uses according to specific needs. The ground floor opens out to a tropical garden through large windows that are hidden in the walls. Closing them generates intimate spaces dressed in a palette of warm colours, natural materials and customised furniture, and highlighted by a contemporary, sustainable and sophisticated design. Architecture and interior design complement each other, but they can also create distinctive visions. Do you always agree on decisions and styles? Alexis: No, not always, but reaching an understanding in those decisions and styles helps ensure the success of our projects. We are quite similar in our desire to innovate and progress with bold proposals, and we complement each other in the technical and decorative aspects, although we have different personalities. One is colder and the other more impulsive. How do you divide your work? Alexis: Although it is clear that each one is more involved in their respective facets, we are both involved in all the important decisions for each project, and we have a great team who help us carry out the work. The process depends on the project and its requirements, but generally we review the general idea in common and then develop, in detail, each branch of the project together with our team. What part of a project do you spend the most time on: architecture, interior décor, furniture design? Lucia: It depends on the project itself. Many projects require more time on the technical aspects, then proceed smoothly during the interior design 96

phase – and vice versa. But generally we spend more time than necessary on each phase to ensure that everything is well-defined and carefully studied before its execution. “Simplicity is the key to brilliance”... Is this the key to your projects? Lucia: Yes, without a doubt – we believe that “less is more”. For us, simple and well thought out details are very important. Starting from the basis that each project is unique and has different requirements, we tend to incline towards simplicity and natural materials, whenever we are allowed. Alexis: One of our key priorities is also ensuring the client’s satisfaction, and that of the production team in general, based on sustainable architecture optimised to a project’s specific needs. What cannot be missing in a home? Lucia: Comfortable and intelligent distribution, spaces that invite you to become immersed in them, and finishes and work practices in accordance with the high quality that Marbella clients deserve and warrant. How do you respond to modern-day housing requirements? Alexis: Most of the answers are given to us by clients, even if they do so without realising it. Somehow we try to translate into reality what they are thinking and what they desire. Nowadays, what clients are looking for most are functional spaces, optimisation of resources and, especially, large terraces – not to mention a long individual list that each developer or client might have. Lucia: I think 2020 has marked a turning point in clients’ needs. Now they demand more exterior areas, and ones that are habitable, and more space and light. In short, that each home satisfies every possible need a family might have, without having to leave home. So Marbella, with its enviable climate, helps create the perfect combination. What has Villa Tulum meant for you? Has it represented something of a watershed moment? Alexis: Well, Villa Tulum has been a great leap forward in the way projects have been devised and developed in this area until now – at least from our point of view. It is a villa inspired by a more tropical environment, but it is still a concept that can work quite well in this area and which relies heavily on the topography where it is anchored. I would not consider it a watershed moment right now, as we haven’t invented anything new, but we hope to continue receiving more good reviews that the project is generating. HOME SHINE The importance of lighting in a home can make or break the overall look of a room. When you have mastered the lighting, the space instantly feels inviting. Layering lighting is a great way to add interesting nuances; while placing several table lamps around a living room, for example, provides intriguing pockets of light and allows you to control the amount of illumination needed, as and when required. Here are some interesting ideas… 98

The Alisse wall control integrates cutting-edge technology and timeless design that is both intuitive and completely personalised. Created by Lutron “to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary with a single touch”, the HomeWorks-wired Alisse keypad allows the user to control lights, shades/draperies, temperature and third-party equipment. Hand-crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Alisse wall control features a sleek architectural design, innovative technical approach and customisable controls – providing a seamless and luxury-embodied addition to any room. According to Sam Chambers, senior director of Lutron’s residential business, at the heart of the Alisse wall control is Lutron’s understanding that every detail matters when designing a home and that technology’s role should be to enhance the design vision, not distract from it. “The Alisse wall control’s uncompromising approach to aesthetics through its craftsmanship, style, versatility and harmonious form brings design visions to life in a beautiful way. “Lutron considered every detail when designing this product. We imagined an elegant form, machined from a solid metal plate, and hand-finished and grained to perfection with just a hint of powerful technology. But we didn’t stop there. Our teams thought about how they could innovate in every aspect of the product and make design, ordering, installation and programming better for everyone.”

The keypad is designed to work with Lutron HomeWorks QSX series processors only through the wired QS link; while backlit buttons make it easy to find and operate the keypad in low light conditions. Keypads are available in a variety of colors and finishes, with optional text or icon engraving. The custom engraving options are defined by precise etching backfilled with complimentary ink, allowing a user to personalise their wall control with attractive text or illustrative icons. Each wall control can also be completed with tailor-made button configurations. Exclusive to the Alisse wall control, the Lutron Signature Metal Collection offers a sophisticated finish palette that compliments other decorative elements within a home’s interior. Active button press or scene status is indicated through the control’s backlighting intensity, which is configurable through HomeWorks software. It can also be programmed in the HomeWorks software to adjust intensity by time of day or button presses. The Alisse base unit has been designed to allow system installation without exposing the keypad to potential damage during construction, and it features a single programmable push-button for wiring validation and basic system control. The Alisse wall control is available from Illusion in Urb. Guadalcántara in Marbella (www.e-illusion.es) HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

BATHROOM

IDEAS Bathrooms can often be quite ordinary in terms of design, with plenty of white ceramic and not a lot else – but this doesn’t have to be the case. Adding some furniture, plants or even a chandelier can immediately give the space a more welcoming feel. Good cabinetry is key to avoiding ugly plastic bottles of shampoo cluttering up your surfaces. Go bold and opt for a statement wallpaper – there are now waterproof wallcoverings that are perfect to make a splash in the bathroom.

Style

For a superlative night’s sleep, it’s not just about having a good mattress – although this is important, of course. It’s also about enjoying a feeling of complete relaxation, and decoration plays a huge part. Textiles, lighting, window treatments, wall colours and accessories such as rugs, cushions, mirrors and the like are all important items to get right. If your bedroom is short of space, clever storage solutions are a must, such as a canopy bed or wall shelving to free-up valuable floor space. Here are some great bedroom ideas…

ESTEPONA PL ANS ITS FIRST

MUNICIPALITY-LED BOUTIQUE HOSTEL Article supplied by Atlas Group

Estepona has been undergoing great changes of late, and the town has been rapidly expanding with new housing and plenty of improved services as well as infrastructure. Hostels are a common fixture in large cities, particularly in Europe, and typically attract younger travellers or those holidaying on a shoe-string. In an initiative to drive a wider demographic to Estepona, the Junta of Andalucía (regional government) has given the go-ahead for the project and the hostel will be located in the centre of the Old Town. The 36-person capacity hostel will be completed in 2022, and will have several dormitory-style bedrooms, a kitchen and dining room, a co-working space and laundry facilities. The hostel will be 350 square metres in size and located in an existing building on Calle Torrrejón, renovated especially for the facility. Experts in heritage renovation, Estepona-based Volume International Architects have been entrusted with the transformation, together with local construction company Atlas Group. Ventura Morón Carrillo (pictured below), chief architect at Volume, explains, “Our company philosophies are to rehabilitate as a means of conservation, revaluation and regeneration, particularly of historic centres. This project in the heart of Estepona Old Town, which is of great historical influence, will be in harmony with these evolving times and will offer an up-to-date service, alongside the preservation of the building and the greater area. We look forward to working with Atlas Group to bring this project to fruition.” Volume International Architects have worked on numerous projects on the Costa del Sol and further afield, developing projects in urban and rural contexts, historical centres and urbanisations. Atlas Group Marbella, experts in construction, renovations and rehabilitations, will deliver the project and bring it to life. Director general Mike Gregory says, “We are pleased to be again selected for an exciting project. The Old Town of Estepona is an iconic location, one which is receiving great attention in renovation and rejuvenation.” Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. (+34) 951 272 140 www.atlas-group.es

Construction has begun in MIlan on a project that aims to create an office space where work and nature interact together in harmony. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates for independent platform Europa Risorse, the “Welcome, feeling at work” building is highlighted by organic and horizontal architecture that responds to the surrounding context. Both parties identified a need to create a workspace centred around employee health and wellbeing, “that is respectful and well-integrated with its local environment… combining individual wellness and a green building solution”. The project is being built in Milan’s Parco Lambro district, and completion is scheduled for 2024, “allowing the individual to access the most sophisticated technological and digital resources as well as effective measures to protect people from future pandemics”. Financed by a fund managed by PineBridge Benson Elliot, it will provide a mixed use offering including offices, auditoriums, co-working premises and meeting rooms, as well as restaurants and lounges, shops, a supermarket, a wellness area, and spaces for temporary exhibitions and displays. Both inside and out, public and private, and work and free time, all merge together and are linked by a common green theme. “Making people’s workdays more pleasant is one of the worthiest goals achieved by this project,” said Europa Risorse chairman Antonio Napoleone, “natural light, noise mitigation, encouragement of movement, healthy eating, large inside and outside areas for work meetings, easy circulation, and lots of other people-focused details, which also fit in with the new post-COVID culture. “The project extends beyond sustainability, which is today a moral duty rather than a choice in that it puts people in workplaces that are natural environments. Only in this way can we truly understand how this is part of us and deserves more respect. Working in such conditions draws the best from us – we fall ill less and are strongly convinced to create a more habitable planet for our children and future generations.” Added Leopoldo Andreis de Gregorio, principal head of Italy PineBridge Benson Elliot, “Design excellence is at the heart of every development project we undertake, with a view to creating lasting, high-quality buildings that are distinct to their location and use, while also pushing the boundaries of sustainability. “‘Welcome’ is an iconic project that sets out to create a place with strong identity and visibility, which also speaks to and effortlessly integrates with the surrounding area. It was particularly important to us that the design should be ecofriendly and sustainable, using low-carbon-emission materials, and we believe this will also be important for future occupiers as the pandemic accelerates pre-COVID work trends with more corporates focused on environmental conscious design for their office space.” Kengo Kuma and Associates were chosen to design the project due to their global leadership in organic architecture, creating buildings that merge with their surroundings. Outlining their involvement with the project, Kengo Kuma said, “Milan is a city with an exciting and unique combination of contemporary and tradition in art, architecture and crafts that makes the ideal ground for our work to be implemented… ‘Welcome, feeling at work’ is designed with organic, natural elements that appeal to our senses and tendency to find comfort and inspiration in natural settings.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Blue is a colour which is splendid in gardens, especially used together with silvery and dark green leaves. I find a lot of people don’t really know how to highlight blues at their best. They should be used in large groupings and then with the dark green or silvery leaves interspersed. It is no coincidence that we also quite like blue flowers. The colour blue is calming and peaceful, and thus relaxes our state of mind. We also relate it to freshness, attractiveness and a classy appearance. There is a great variety of blue flowers: some grow very high while others love to stay near the ground, mixed together, so you can get some spectacular results. We all know about the wonderful long stalks of Agapanthus, which can also be found in white – and the lovely, dainty Lobelia, in both blue and purple. Try mixing them together for a riot of colour, and they last for ages, especially if you have the time and patience to remove the flowers’ dying parts. They will then keep going for a long time. I like to plant a big group in a large pot and see their pretty faces turn towards the sun as the day progresses. They need a lot of water, always, as with all flowers – only on the roots. You can grow Delphiniums/Larkspur as well, but remember that they are toxic to humans, so always handle them with gloves. When grown over a large area, they are beautiful. If you can obtain Muscari (you can buy them in seed form online) do get some. They are long-lasting and have a strong fragrance, so the more you plant the headier the fragrance. Sow the seeds at any time, covering them very thinly with compost or grit, and keeping the seed pot in a cool, well-lit spot outdoors. Artificial heat is not needed and can in fact prevent germination, so be very patient as many species will only germinate in spring after chilling or

128

freezing in the moist seed pot in winter. Of course, one of the most iconic blue flowers is the Iris. Think of them growing to a height as background flowers in a garden, with Lobelia in front. Hyacinths are planted in pots, and look better when grouped. Their heady fragrance will perfume any room. Hydrangeas in shadier areas are among the most breathtaking garden plants you can have. They come in many colour varieties and the blue features various shades depending on the soil’s alkalinity. Clematis is a wonderful climbing plant that will flourish along a wall; perennial Geraniums last forever; and Buddleia is very aromatic, one of the main reasons why it attracts so many butterflies – making it a real treasure for your garden. It has lance-shaped leaves with blooming branches covered in little blue flowers. Now mix all those with plants such as Artemisia Silver King or Silver Mound, growing to about one metre high. These will have to be placed towards the back and be divided in spring so they don’t run amok. Lavender adds to the perfume, while Russian Sage and Japanese Painter ferns are simply beautiful. Purple Basil, Acteas and dark-leaved Elder (Sambucus nigra) varieties such as “Black Beauty” and “Black Lace” can be pruned back to ground level in early spring, to produce a fantastic display of foliage and the best-coloured leaves. So there are a few ideas for the moody blues… Create some wonderful experiments, and you can always move the plants if you are not satisfied. CULINARY DELICACIES FOR SUMMER ENTERTAINING By Helle Barlebo from Chili Gourmet Catering Let’s enjoy the beginning of summer with two of our recipes – delicious hummus and marzipan cakes – that are sure to impress your dinner guests. If, on the other hand, you don’t really want to cook anything yourself, you can always contact me to arrange a complete catering experience.

HUMMUS · 250 gr. dried chickpeas · ¾ lt. chicken soup · 2 laurels & 1 dried chilli · 2 cloves garlic · 2 shallot onions diced · ½ red pepper diced · 1 fresh red chilli (leave the seeds – only if you’re brave) · 1 dl. Oleoestepa olive oil · 1 dl. sour cream · Juice from half-lime · ½ bunch fresh coriander · 1½ teaspoon paprika or pimentón · Tahini paste or sesame oil to taste · Maldon salt & pepper · Roasted sesame seeds & olives (for decoration)

When the chickpeas are cooked through, discard the cooked chilli and bay leaves. Then put it all in a blender with the rest of the ingredients and give them a proper mix. Taste with the spices to find your favourite blend. Place the hummus in the fridge until it is completely chilled. Traditionally it is served with a little olive oil on top, a touch of paprika, some olives and fresh coriander. One of our favourite ways to serve hummus is as a canapé, in a colourful salty waffle and topped with roasted sesame seeds. We are quite fond of hummus as a dip, together with warm naan bread, nachos or breadsticks. Another favourite is our super-healthy pizza version. Toast a few tortillas (wheat pancakes) on the grill or in the oven, then spread a layer of hummus all over the pancake. Top with avocado, half-cherry

Soak the dried chickpeas overnight – with at least double the volume of water and a pinch of salt – in the fridge. Strain the water and cook the chickpeas for 45 minutes, with the soup, dried chilli, laurel, salt and pepper. 132

tomatoes, diced cucumbers, fresh coriander, a little olive oil and freshly ground pepper.

MARZIPAN CAKES (“Kransekage” – a Danish delicacy) · 500 gr. pure marzipan · 3 egg whites from large ecological eggs · 200 gr. sugar · ½ vanilla bean · 200 gr. raw almonds without skin · 200 gr. dark chocolate Frosting: · 1 egg white · 100-150 gr. powdered sugar Blend the raw almonds to a fine almond flour, grate all the marzipan into small pieces, and mix the seeds from the vanilla with the sugar. Then whip the egg whites and sugar together, above a steam bath with a hand mixer. Remove from the heat as soon as the sugar dissolves, but continue to whip until the mixture is white and thick. Add the blended almonds and grated marzipan little by little into the mixture. To make long rolls of the mixture, a good piece of advice is to moisten your hands a little – then the job is a little less sticky. When the rolls are about 2.5 centimetres thick, make them into rectangular shapes. Place the long cakes on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for approximately 20 minutes at 180 degrees. When the almond cakes have a little golden colour on top, they are done. As soon as the cakes are refrigerated, cut them into five-centimetre pieces and dip them into the steam bath of melted chocolate. Mix the egg white and powdered sugar for the frosting. Place the mixture into a small plastic food bag and cut a small hole in the bottom corner. Now you can beautifully decorate your delicious Kransekage. The cakes can easily be made a day in advance, or frozen for a special occasion. Chili Gourmet Catering… by Helle Barlebo Tel. (+34) 666 627 105 helle@chiligourmet.es www.chiligourmet.es

IS OLDER INDEED BETTER? By AJ Linn

There is a belief, if not a conviction, among wine lovers that the older a red wine is, the better. Indeed, the ageing process should ideally be carried out in oak casks, French being at the top of the tree (almost literally), and Czech at the bottom (just acceptable but not ideal), passing through American oak and a few other options. How much does wood influence the maturing process of wine? The generally accepted view is that it gives a better taste, permits the slow oxidisation and assists a secondary fermentation, where it occurs (malolactic) in the barrel. It invariably produces a smoother finish. French oak is the most expensive, and best for more delicate grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. American oak costs less, so the prudent winemaker usually opts for a mixture of both. A good barrel, the optimum use of which is four years (but is usually extended to double that time), comes from an 80-year-old tree with two trunks, and it needs between one and two years after felling to be ready to receive wine. Although production levels in any particular bodega affect the final selection, the average added cost of a good oak barrel is around €2.5 per bottle. There are less expensive alternatives to oak butts, mainly the use of oak chips introduced into stainless steel tanks in which the wine is maturing. Another method is placing oak planks inside old barrels to “revitalise” them. The use of oak sawdust is banned in most countries. These methods were developed in New World winemaking countries such as Australia, South Africa, Chile, Argentina and the US. In Europe, an irrational war against what is often considered to be unethical methods has been waged for years. Traditional winemakers would like all producers to be compelled to use oak barrels, but where is the sense in that if we are talking about economically priced “barrel-aged” reds or “barrel-fermented chardonnays”? I am unaware of any blind tasting that has identified the difference between oak barrel-aged reds and the same wine aged using oak chips. In fact, there is a strong argument for the latter, as the maturing process can be fine-tuned by using more or less added oak, whereas once the young wine is put into an oak barrel all that can be done is hope for a successful outcome. Anyway, as long as the wine tastes okay and suits our pocket, are we really worried how the oaky flavour is induced? (These comments will have me classified as a philistine with little regard for traditional methods. Read on…) The drawback of maturing wine in wood is the cost. The older the wine the 134

more expensive it is when it finally gets to the consumer, and the increased cost is represented by the amount of time it has to be stored. Dead money, as it is often referred to. So wouldn’t it be marvellous if the ageing of wine, and indeed of spirits like whisky, could be accelerated, and a two year old wine have the taste and characteristics of a 12-year-old? As is often the case, it is the US that has stolen a lead on the Old World, and there are “speed-aged” whiskies currently on the market. The reluctance to adopt such methods in Europe is gradually fading, and within a few months the choice will be extensive. There is really very little mystery about it, although it is a sort of rocket science in that the additive used is made in the laboratory. It can be added to the wine or spirit with no resulting change in taste, and indeed is undetectable. I am working with the US university where development is taking place, and the first European wines being used as proverbial guinea pigs are sherries. Early signs are that success is almost guaranteed. But, once on the market, will the consumer want these simulated drinks that have not been matured as tradition demands? Well, initial analyses show that a buyer prefers a 12-year-old “speed-aged” whisky costing, say, €20, to the genuine article costing €40.

KOA URBAN GRILL Most of us like to experiment, and here is an opportunity within a few kilometres of Marbella. Koa (meaning taking a chance during tricky times) is the new venture of avantgarde Costa chef Ivan Bravo (still running the very successful Asqueroso in Torre del Mar). Referred to as an “urban grill”, it is large and spacious, with tables well-separated, young attentive waiters, and live music on weekends. Best of all is the grill, where most of the dishes are prepared. Superb meat, hugely original menu characterised by Ivan’s knowledge of herbs and spices to bring out the best flavours – and very fair prices and an economic wine list. Avda. JUMP INTO THE COLD By Rachel Garrod

I like a dip in the sea as much as the next person, but for me this will be when the water temperature is good and high. Not so for many people. A friend of mine regularly swims in a lido in the UK, in winter. It seems as though there is an increasing trend for cold water swimming, and devotees claim many health benefits from this pastime. Are they correct? Well, research is emerging that there may be positive effects from regular cold water immersion, and the idea seems to be based upon the notion of “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”. A sudden cold shock causes levels of the hormone adrenaline and dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in reward processing, to shoot up markedly. The body also produces a “gasp response” and involuntary hyperventilation to increase levels of oxygen. This sudden stress response, if practised regularly, appears to build resilience to other types of stress, such as the ability to exercise at low levels of oxygen. Wim Hoff, otherwise known as The Iceman, who can endure extreme cold for prolonged periods of time, showed an exceptionally low immune response after being injected with a bacterial toxin. Training in cold wa136

ter immersion and hyperventilation breathing by healthy volunteers also resulted in a similar low immune response to the toxin. The high levels of adrenaline these subjects showed correlated very strongly with high levels of anti-inflammatory markers (healthy mediators), suggesting a role for cold shock in combating chronic inflammation. Other studies hint at beneficial effects for our brain via an increase in the growth of synapse connections, possibly helping prevent dementia. All this sounds very exciting, although I myself am still unwilling to dive into the sea until August at least. However, the health benefits may possibly be obtained with just a paddle in cold water. That sounds much more manageable to me. So, next time you find yourself near cold water, take off your shoes and socks and have a paddle, just like we did when we were children. WINE DRINKING MAY HELP PROTECT AGAINST CATARACTS People who consume alcohol moderately appear less likely to develop cataracts that require surgery. Wine consumption showed the strongest protective effect, suggesting that antioxidants which are abundant in red wine may play a role in cataract prevention. However, people who drank daily or nearly daily had about a six per cent higher risk of cataract surgery compared with people who consumed alcohol moderately. The new research was published in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A research team from NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust in London, conducted the study because previous studies on cataracts and alcohol consumption were limited in their design and offered mixed results. Some studies showed an increased risk from heavy drinking, some suggested a reduced risk from low to moderate drinking, and some data showed no link at all between alcohol and cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s normally clear lens. Most cataracts develop slowly and don’t affect vision early on. However, cataracts eventually make it more difficult to read, drive a car or see people’s faces. An ophthalmologist surgically removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is highly effective and one of the most common procedures performed in all of medicine. Three million Americans, for example, undergo cataract surgery each year. This study, the largest of its kind, tracked 490,000 volunteers in the UK who agreed to give detailed information about their health and lifestyle. The participants, enrolled in two different study groups, answered a detailed questionnaire that assessed the amount and type of alcohol they consumed, among other things. After taking into account factors already known to affect cataracts (age, sex, ethnicity, social deprivation, weight, smoking and diabetes) the researchers found that people who consumed about 6.5 standard glasses of wine per week (which is within the current guidelines for safe alcohol intake in both the US and UK) were less likely to undergo cataract surgery. Wine drinkers benefited the most compared with those who abstained and those who drank other types of alcohol, showing a 23 per cent reduction in cataract surgery in one study group and a 14 per cent reduction in the other group. However, the researchers note that their study does not establish causation, only a strong association between alcohol consumption and cataracts. The study’s findings are consistent with what is already suggested about the health benefits of red wine and with previous studies that found diets rich in antioxidants may prevent the onset of cataracts. Grape skin is loaded with healthful antioxidants, resveratrol and flavonoids. These powerful plant compounds and antioxidants are found in higher concentrations in red wine than in white. Both red and white wine have higher concentrations of these compounds than beer.

“Cataract development may be due to gradual damage from oxidative stress during ageing,” explained Dr. Sharon Chua, the lead study author. “The fact that our findings were particularly evident in wine drinkers may suggest a protective role of polyphenol antioxidants, which are especially abundant in red wine.” A HIDDEN HEALTH BENEFIT FROM DRINKING COFFEE Drinking a strong coffee half an hour before exercising increases fat-burning, according to a new Spanish study. Scientists from the department of physiology of the University of Granada have shown that caffeine (about 3 mg/kg, the equivalent of a strong coffee) ingested half an hour before aerobic exercise significantly increases the rate of fat-burning. They also found that, if the exercise is performed in the afternoon, the effects of the caffeine are more marked than in the morning. In their study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, the researchers aimed to determine whether caffeine actually does increase oxidation or “burning” of fat during exercise. Despite the fact that its consumption in the form of supplements is very common, the scientific evidence for its beneficial claims is scarce. “The recommendation to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning to increase fat oxidation is commonplace. However, this recommendation may be lacking a scientific basis, as it is unknown whether this increase is due to exercising in the morning or due to going without food for a longer period of time,” explained the lead author of this research, Francisco José Amaro-Gahete. A total of 15 men (average age 32 years) participated in the research, completing an exercise test four times at seven-day intervals. Subjects ingested 3 mg/kg of caffeine or a placebo at 8am and 5pm (each subject completed the tests in all four conditions in a random order). The conditions prior to each exercise test (hours elapsed since last meal, physical exercise or consumption of stimulant substances) were strictly standardised, and fat oxidation during exercise was calculated accordingly. The results of the study showed that acute caffeine ingestion 30 minutes before performing an aerobic exercise test increased maximum fat oxidation during exercise regardless of the time of day, according to the authors. These results also showed that caffeine increases fat oxidation during morning exercise in a similar way to that observed without caffeine intake in the afternoon. The findings of this study suggest that the combination of acute caffeine intake and aerobic exercise performed at moderate intensity in the afternoon provides the optimal scenario for people seeking to increase fat-burning during physical exercise. HISPANO SUIZA ICONIC CARMEN GIVEN A SPORTIER MAKEOVER

26/04/2021 13:36

Back in 1921, Hispano Suiza developed a racing version of its high-performance H6 Coupé and entered it in the George Boillot Cup. This endurance race, around the French city of Boulogne, lasted more than three and a half hours, and Hispano Suiza achieved three consecutive victories – with André Dubonnet (1921), Paul Bablot (1922) and Léonce Garnier (1923). One hundred years later, Hispano Suiza has paid tribute to that historic motorsport achievement by naming its latest model the Carmen Boulogne. A sportier evolution of the Hispano Suiza Carmen, this second model is a spectacular all-electric hypercar that delivers the marque’s customary luxury and exclusivity, and is designed, developed and manufactured in Barcelona. Hispano Suiza plans to manufacture 14 units of the Carmen and just five of the Carmen Boulogne, with the first unit ready to be delivered in 2022. The design, engineering and production combine the expertise of Hispano Suiza and QEV Technologies, a company that specialises in the development of electric motors and motorsports. The price of the Carmen Boulogne will start from €1.65 million (plus local taxes), and its manufacturing process (“handmade with the utmost precision”) takes approximately 12 months. The new two-seater grand tourer delivers 1114 CV (820 kW) – 95 CV more than the Hispano Suiza Carmen. Its maximum speed is limited to 290 km/h and it has an acceleration of zero to 100 km/h in just 2.6 seconds. The Carmen Boulogne’s weight has been reduced to 1,630 kilogram (60 kilograms fewer than the Carmen) thanks to the optimisation of structural elements such as the suspension, a carbon fibre subframe, new CNC parts and a carbon fibre roof, among other features. The Carmen Boulogne is powered by four permanentmagnet synchronous engines, two on each rear wheel. Each engine’s torque is controlled through sophisticated vectoring systems developed in-house with the expertise gained in Formula E. From zero to 6,500 rpm, the engines are capable of reaching a maximum of 1,600 Nm of torque, allowing for – according to Hispano Suiza – “astonishing acceleration and seemingly endless power and traction”. The lithium-ion polymer battery has a capacity of 80 kWh, thus developing a driving range up to 400 kilometres. The batteries are designed and produced inhouse, including a complete temperature control system to ensure that the cells can operate optimally. It has a fast-charging capacity of more than 80 kW DC, requiring only 30 minutes to charge 30-80 per cent through a CCS2 fast charger, as well as CHAdeMO and GB/T charging options. The entire body of the Carmen Boulogne is made of carbon fibre, which is visible under a clear varnish created to emphasise its sportiness and preserve the model’s timeless elegance. It sports the same semicircular headlights and aggressive “scowl” as the Carmen, with the addition of an imposing coppercoloured grille. A fully customisable model developed in the brand’s “Unique Tailormade” department, the Carmen Boulogne’s sleek interior features suede or black Alcantara on the bulkhead and door panels. TYPES OF CHILD CUSTODY IN SPAIN Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountant

During a divorce process in Spain, the overriding priority is that the welfare of any children should always prevail. These are the various types of child custody situations... SINGLE-PARENT CUSTODY In this type of custody, a custodial parent will be in charge of the minors’ care and they will also be responsible for managing the alimony that corresponds to the children. The non-custodial parent may enjoy visiting rights. SHARED CUSTODY This is the formula most recommended by the Supreme Court. It means both parents will be able to have the children during alternate periods, and be on an equal footing with their needs. The length of period staying with each parent is usually a fortnight, one month or, in some cases, a full quarter. PARTY OR DISTRIBUTIVE CHILD CUSTODY This is the least-used formula, and it occurs when the couple have multiple children. The judge assigns one parent custody of one or more children and the other parent custody of the others. This type of child custody in Spain only applies in very restricted cases, as it is always considered advisable to ensure family unity and not to separate siblings. CHILD CUSTODY ATTRIBUTED TO A THIRD PARTY This is a form of guardianship and singular custody, regulated in article 103 of the Civil Code, and applicable specifically for the child’s wellbeing. A judge may grant custody of minors to people other than the parents, such as grandparents or close relatives, always in extraordinary and extenuating circumstances only. 146

Faced with each type of child custody in Spain, two positions can be adopted. In the first instance, the minors remain at the same family home, and the parents take turns staying in the property. This is known as a “nest house” and it has been in practice for a while now. However, this method was found to cause more conflicts than it was trying to avoid. For this reason, jurisprudence tends to opt for the second position: shared custody with displacement of minors. The children move from the home of one parent to the home of the other, depending on the relevant custody period. Currently, this type of child custody is the more common one, always with the objective of not causing harm to the minor and limiting disruption if they are uprooted from their customary environment. Nevertheless, the periods are distributed according to the needs and circumstances of each parent, so it is not considered unreasonable for this custody option to proceed with the help of third parties such as grandparents, family members or close friends who can, at any given moment, return the child to the other parent. MEETING POINTS When there is major conflict between parents, it is customary to request that delivery and collection of the child be carried out at a meeting point. Overseen by a public administration, this meeting point is a place where a parent can leave the child or children and depart. They are then looked after by an official or assistant at that meeting point until the other parent arrives to pick them up.
