From the

It would seem a little ungracious to complain about living in one of the world’s most pleasant settings and climates but sometimes even paradise has its shortcomings. So let’s be frank: after the hottest July since modern records have been compiled and a customarily steamy August, it really is a relief to be able to look forward to the milder pleasures of autumn. The astronomic (as against meteorological) summer season in Spain doesn’t officially conclude until 20 September but we always like to be well prepared at Home & Lifestyle Magazine, so we are focusing this issue on autumn and even further ahead to early winter. In our Décor & Design and Boutique Trends sections, we move around the home from the soothing embrace of well-balanced bedrooms (including wardrobes) to the aesthetically attractive functionality of outdoor areas, stopping along the way to gain an enticing insight into bold fabrics, eye-catching wallpapers, sublimely functional glass curtains, luminous skylights, elegant tableware, versatile rugs and sophisticated ambient lighting. And – for a state-of-theart pièce de résistance – domotic networking (or home automation) to connect high-tech features and gadgetry, from home cinema to sound systems. With the exhibition season resuming after summer (at least here in the northern hemisphere) we preview three major home decoration and design shows – Maison & Objet in Paris, the London Design Fair and MoOd in Brussels – where industry professionals and home owners alike will once again be able to view a feast of cutting-edge ideas and latest trends. In our Lifestyle section this issue, we step inside three premier hotels in Spain – in Madrid, Gran Canaria and Benalmádena – that offer travellers a sumptuous haven from the stresses of everyday life. In addition, perhaps rather optimistically for most of us, we include a potent new Aston Martin model on the wish list of our travel plans. We also savour the exquisite culinary delights served up at three of the Coast’s finest restaurants, find out what a pacesetting (and famous) olive oil producing family are presenting to the gourmet market, and accompany these delicacies with a bottle of wine from the little-heralded but eminently progressive Bierzo region. Finally, in our News & Events section, we showcase the excellent services and products available from leading businesses and establishments along the coast – as always, ready and prepared to help us add an original and personal touch to our homes.

When redecorating your bedroom, consider good storage with decent-sized drawers and wardrobes, and use boxes that can be stored away easily so that your room is free of clutter - this will allow your brain to feel at peace when you enter the bedroom. A good quality bed and pillows will look after your back and neck whilst bedding with a high thread count is softer and will help you sleep better. Illumination is very important so it is advisable to go for adjustable lighting to provide the right ambience for the time of day, with softly-dimmed lights during the evening and brighter lights in the daytime. Rugs, wallpapers and pictures can bring together a room, making it more personal and cosy with beautiful wellproportioned furniture. Colour schemes create the overall ambience to the bedroom and muted tones are ideal for a relaxing feel. Bright colours make you feel livelier so use them with caution in your bedroom. Large bold patterns can make a real impact in a room – if you want your bedroom to be a restful place, go for smaller patterns that are not so brazen. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

TRENDS

Now that we are in autumn, we need to prepare ourselves for the upcoming colder months. Due to our privileged climate in southern Spain and Gibraltar, carpets are not commonplace in the home, but this does not mean that we have to always have stark marble or tiled floors. When the cold sets in, rugs help to provide heat – retaining properties and therefore also helping towards energy efficiency. If the acoustics are bad in a room due to echo, rugs can reduce noise and absorb sound. Also, if a room is above another room, a rug can act as a sound barrier between the two floors, buffering the sound of noisy shoes. Outdoor rugs also protect wooden decking from scratches and can serve as an attractive non-slip mat next to a pool. When purchasing a rug, it is highly recommended that you invest in one made of good quality materials such as silk or wool as it will be more tactile and will last much longer than one made of synthetic materials. A natural material such as wool will develop its own character depending on how much light exposure and foot traffic it receives. With regards to sizing, experts claim that rugs under a dining table should be around half a metre longer than the edge of the table, so that dining chairs fit onto the rug; and don’t forget about your door openings – ensure that the rug does not inhibit a door from opening completely. Aesthetically, rugs instantly give a warm and cosy look to a room and come in innumerable sizes, colours, patterns and textures, making them an extremely versatile accessory. If the rug has a bold pattern or colour, it can become a focal point to a living space, like a piece of artwork; and if it is neutral, it can subtly soften the appearance of the room. If chosen correctly, a rug brings together the interior design of a room, and it does not necessarily have to be placed on a floor. These days rugs can be seen hanging on walls like works of art and be used instead of headboards, so they really do offer a range of design options.

The Love Of Rugs The Trenza rug by Gan gives a very natural feel to a room. It is hand-loomed and 100% new wool with cotton back-sizing. It comes as circular or rectangular in ivory, taupe and brown. As tableware showcases your cooking, investing in a high-quality set is well worth the money, but there are several factors worth considering before taking the plunge. If you are going to buy tableware for everyday use then it is more susceptible to chips and cracks. Therefore porcelain or bone china and stoneware would be recommendable, and always check if it is suitable for microwave and dishwasher use. Decide on the look of your table. Do you prefer a casual look or perhaps a romantic or elegant style? White dinner sets are the most adaptable as they are easy to coordinate with the rest of your table setting. More colourful or patterned tableware can look eye-catching and playful, and work really well on bare wooden tables or a plain tablecloth.

Below The Liquid Light series by Kristine Five MelvÌr reinterprets traditional still-life motives and is inspired by the Cobbler’s Lamp from the 17th century. Liquid Light comprises a birch wood plate holding a glass carafe and a brass socket for a candle. The carafe acts like a lens when it is filled with water and lit up. Its simplicity makes it a very effective table piece. Available at www.kristinefivemelvaer.com (Photo by Erik Five Gunnerud). HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

The Golden Mile

TOWNHOUSE · 4 BED · 4 BATH · 200M2 · LOG FIRE · INTEGRAL GARAGE · ALARM · AC · PRICE: 595,000€ The Golden Mile is arguably the most prestigious address in the whole of mainland Spain. A select stretch of coastline from whence the Marbella tourism phenomenon first emanated. First came the exquisite Marbella Club Hotel conceived by legendary socialite Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, then the fine Puente Romano Hotel, and latterly a handful of other five-star establishments. Soft sandy beaches on one side, an imposing backdrop of

mountains on the other, and just a stone’s throw from the vibrant marina of Puerto Banús… this is the ‘place to be’. La Solana occupies a special piece of this hallowed ground. A select development of four spacious apartments and one striking penthouse contained within an established residential community of just 24 pastel-coloured townhouses. Undoubtedly the address is an asset in itself.

Getting Smarter

in Your Home

A home cinema allows you to lose yourself, making you feel like you are actually in the film itself. This feeling is known as suspension of disbelief. The ideal home cinema will have speakers installed at the correct height, with the volume and resolution calibrated perfectly so that the viewer receives a superlative visual and audio experience. By combining eight or more subwoofers with infrasonic bass units, the Perfect Bass system emits extremely powerful and pure bass that drops below the range of the human ear, giving you a sensation instead of actual sound.

Wallpapers have made a big comeback in recent years due to the versatility and variety of the collections available. Plain walls can be transformed with luxurious, stylish designs and textures. Experimenting with wallpaper gives you the ability to create your own ambience. Even wallpaper designs depicting flowers and animals that were once thought to be chintzy and old-fashioned have been reworked by designers, giving them a modern and eyecatching appearance.

Maintaining a design balance between nature and the necessities of life

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun which is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy and even solar architecture. As an infinite source – at least in our time – of renewable energy, it is being used more and more in its capacity as either passive or active solar power. In this issue I am specifically focusing on a record-breaking attempt to fly around the world using only solar power (see next page). An increasing number of individuals and companies are harnessing the sun’s awesome strength, and this can only be of great benefit to us all.

The Benefits of Bamboo The Madrid-based 3dWalldecor company uses the effect of 3D to enhance wallpapers and, as they are also thinking very much about reducing waste and protecting the planet, they use bamboo – that most versatile of grasses. Easy to apply and cost-effective, and providing a rapid transformation of your ambience and ecological materials, this is an extremely viable option for décor. www.3dwalldecor.es

Global Odyssey Solar Impulse is attempting the historic feat of flying around the world only on solar energy. The aircraft has now completed eight legs, covering nearly half the journey, but setbacks are part of the challenges of a project that pushes technological boundaries to the limit. With unscheduled repairs being carried out due to overheating after the latest leg from Japan to Hawaii, Solar Impulse will now try to complete the first ever round-the-world solar flight in 2016, although this delay will in no way influence the overall objectives of this pioneering endeavour. Solar Impulse is a Swiss-developed, long-range, experimental, solar-powered aircraft project, and also the name of the project’s two operational aircraft. It is a privately financed project led by Swiss engineer and businessman Andre Borschberg and Swiss psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand Piccard, who co-piloted the Breitling Orbiter 3 – which was the first balloon to circle the world non-stop. The aim of the Solar Impulse project is to achieve the first circumnavigation of the Earth by a piloted fixed-wing aircraft using only solar power. The plane completed eight stages of the flight during the first half of 2015, starting in Dubai. It began the latest leg from Japan to Hawaii on 28 June, with Borschberg piloting, and it reached Hawaii on 3 July, setting new records for the world’s longest solar-powered flight both for time (117 hours, 52 minutes) and distance (7,212 kilometres / 4,481 miles). The duration was also a record for the longest solo flight, by time, for any aircraft. This pacesetting initiative also draws attention to many other new and ground-breaking projects involving solar power. We already have it cutting down electricity bills in homes and commercial buildings, as well as being used in cars, although there is still a long way to go to make them easily accessible in price. As the sun is there – hanging in the sky, benevolent or not so benevolent depending on which country you find yourself in – it is ridiculous to not utilise its power. www.solarimpulse.com

Maison & Objet has devised a “richer and more fluid” exhibition for visitors at the second show in Paris this year. Celebrating their 20th year, the organisers have created three “poles” for easier navigation and new synergies, as part of their ongoing aim to “decode the international market for home and design”. According to Maison & Objet, “After several years of study and on the basis of evolving consumption patterns, the show has shifted towards grouping by lifestyle rather than by sector.” To that end, three main poles have been reconfigured: • Maison and its overarching decorative offer with four sectors – Eclectic, Cosy, Elegant and Actuel. • The Objet concept store, with eight sectors – Craft, Métiers d’Art, Fragrances, Cook+Design, Fresh, Complements, Kids, Fashion and Beloved. • Luxe, Design & Architecture D’Interérieur, bringing together NOW! In conjunction with the festival, a large and diverse range of group-shows will be held across the city, enabling new and established exhibitors from the UK and around the world to debut their designs. Boutique Mood in Brussels

One hundred studios and 125 exhibitors will be taking part in Brussel’s MoOd “boutique show” from 8 to 10 September, together with Indigo Brussels Home Edition. The latter will be organised by Textirama vzw for the first time, although its “uniqueness… will remain completely intact”. Considered the “beating heart” of MoOd, the Blue Drop Exposition will comprise a selection of the 100 best and most trendy products, created by a professional and international jury, showcased in a “clear and inspiring” layout and including six state-of-the-art awards. This cosy environment offers visitors the opportunity networking over a coffee or tea, and discussing the trend forum “Origins”. www.moodbrussels.com

The Costa del Sol

A Genuine International Market

By Sean Woolley

One hundred per cent hotel occupancy, queues on the highway, packed bars and restaurants… the story is similar all over the Costa del Sol. Summer 2015 has been a roaring success. The place is packed with tourists, all lapping up the very best of what the Coast has to offer – the fabulous beaches, world-class shopping, Andalucian charm, 30-degree temperatures. With Greece and northern Africa firmly off-limits for now, vacationers have been heading to the Costa in their droves, with Brits in particular attracted by the heady exchange rate of 1.40 euros to the pound. But it’s not just the Brits who have been flocking here. The traditionally strong tourist markets of northern Europe, such as Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and Ireland, have been well represented as always, but they have been joined by swathes of visitors from the Middle East, the Far East, the United States and other areas of mainland Spain. It’s a stimulating mix, a United Nations in the sun, but what does it mean for the local property market? The summer months used to be the time for local estate agents to take it easy, put their feet up and lie on the beach for a couple of months. Not this year! Agents who we have spoken to report record-breaking numbers of enquiries and viewing trips, with some clients having to be turned away because of congested diaries, low staffing levels and the difficulty of actually getting access to properties that are rented out to holidaymakers.

At Cloud Nine Spain, in July we enjoyed our record month since we began the business 12 long years ago, and signs suggest that the rest of the year will continue to be just as busy. In keeping with the influx of multinational tourists, our clients this summer have come from every corner of the globe, with sales agreed with residents of the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Norway, Switzerland, Dubai, Kuwait, Australia and China. There is no pattern to the type of property being bought or the typical sales price of each property. We have helped broker deals from €112,000 to over €2 million, from Benalmádena to Alcaidesa. Yep, we’ve been kept on our toes! And it’s not just here on the ground that we’ve been busy. Our phones haven’t stopped ringing and our emails haven’t stopped pinging, with an increase of 200 per cent on our enquiry levels from this time last year. The general feeling in the market is that people now want to spend money again, and they are increasingly willing and motivated to indulge in luxury purchases, such as the dream second home in the sun. And for many people, there is no better place to spend it right now than the Costa del Sol. With a property market offering real value for money, true rental potential for investors, better overseas travel connections than ever and a truly cosmopolitan, high-quality Mediterranean lifestyle, there are currently no deterrents for buyers.

Garden

LANDSCAPE

Creating a Prize-Winning Garden in Marbella By Beatrice S. de Perlac, Landscape Gardener

This villa was promoted by Fortofor SL and managed by Francisco Botella.

Members of the oldest gardening club in Spain, Club de Jardinería de la Costa del Sol, held their 51st gardening awards ceremony this year. The founder and president of the club is Remedios del Río, who was also a judge. The judges were a group of professionals who were either landscape gardeners or have a background in art and design. Over the years, Marbella’s gardening culture has been growing more and more, and so has the number of participants in this important competition. We at Adarve were very proud of a project we carried out in Marbella’s Calle del Cerro Muriano, so we decided to enter this garden into the competition. We entitled the project “Jardín de la Luz” (“Garden of Light”) as it optimised on openness and sunlight.

92

As luminosity was our objective, we placed white sand and pebbles around the garden and created nice clean spaces and straight lines to give the garden a minimalist look that was bright and uncluttered. Everything in the garden was strategically placed to not only offer beauty but also functionality. As the garden was designed with a minimalistic approach, there were very few shadows, thus making the whole garden appear illuminated. Remedios del Río was very impressed with our design and choice of plants for the garden and, to our delight, our “Garden of Light” won the best contemporary garden prize. We are very proud to have won this prestigious award as we have always prided ourselves on our contemporary design ideas. Adarve Garden Design Studio. Tel. (+34) 652 426 851 / www.beatriceperlac.com

Who is Christina White? I am Swedish but I have lived abroad since I was 19 years old – a couple of years ago! I have lived in Berlin, Madrid and Los Angeles, and for the last 35 years in Marbella. I feel totally international although my roots are Swedish. I have been working in the interior design industry for the last 17 years, and I opened The White House four years ago.

will you find the fabrics, the furniture, the wallpapers, the painter, the carpenter, the electrician, etc.? That is why you need an interior designer. Language might also be an issue so we try to make everything practical and easy for you. You decide together with the interior designer how to furnish the property. You then go back to your home country and when you return, it is all ready for you.

How did The White House come about? After many years of working for other people I decided at the tender age of 60 to open up my own shop, and I have not regretted it for one minute. Why did I not do it earlier? I just wasn’t ready.

How do you work on a project? In my case, if the property is already built I first go to the new home together with the client, and they describe to me their wishes. I then measure everything and go back to the shop to prepare the project. When it is ready the client comes to my shop and I show them everything. There might be some changes or there might not. I then make an estimate. If the client agrees they pay me 50 per cent on approval – the rest when the house is ready. When everything is ready and installed I usually fill the property with decorative objects, even paintings. If the client wants to buy them, fine – otherwise no problem, I take them back.

I feel totally international although my roots

Tell us about this project… This penthouse in Los Flamingos belongs to a wonderful English family – right from the beginning we were on the same wavelength. Coming from England they wanted it light, summery and pretty relaxed in style. The apartment has stunning views of Gibraltar and Africa, so the terraces are as important as the interior. The owners are warm, kind and open people so I want the apartment to mirror their personalities.

Why would I need an interior designer? Even more than in your own country you need somebody to put it all together. You might know more or less how you want the interior design to be, but where

What were UDesign’s beginnings? We started off as a small carpentry and interior design company making bespoke furniture, both for our own projects and for other decorators and interior designers.

With the latest 3D technology clients are now able to visualise the

How has UDesign evolved since those early days? From one carpenter and one interior designer, our services now include: • Virtual photo real 3D designers. • In-house licensed architects. • Bespoke carpentry which includes all types of furniture, designer kitchens and walk-in wardrobes. • Specialist paint finishes including mirror-finish high-gloss lacquers. • Upholstery ranging from made-to-measure contemporary sofas to fully-fitted cinema and entertainment spaces. • In-house steel and iron fabrication. In addition, as well as our own brand of furniture we supply specially selected leading international brands of furniture, fabrics, rugs, lighting and accessories.

design in advance

What makes UDesign different from many other interior design companies? I think what makes us different is that clients are able to come to our showroom and design their own furniture in any variety of materials, colours, sizes and finishes, or they can choose from our own designs – which we have on display in

our showroom so they can see the quality. And then we can create and design unique pieces to the tastes and requirements of each client. We then begin with a virtual 3D design so that they are able to visualise their home fully furnished, both inside and out and down to the smallest details. Once the designs are finalised we price it and then go into production and installation.

What do you enjoy the most about your work? The thing I enjoy most is that we can literally create and produce unique furniture and designs for each client with very few limitations, so we can be more creative, not only with products for clients but also for our own showroom. For example, we recently opened our new outdoor showroom on the roof terrace (above our existing showroom), which is specifically specialising in fabrics and materials for outdoor use. Chic New Outdoor Furniture Terrace

Photos by David Toms As one of Spain’s leading home decoration and furniture designers, UDesign have placed themselves firmly on the interior design map. Comprising a highly professional team of designers, architects, 3D graphic artists, specialist paint finishers, upholsterers and cabinet makers, they opened a stunning showroom in San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella) towards the end of last year – filled with outstanding furniture, decoration and lighting. UDesign work with a large number of internationally renowned brands as well as producing bespoke furniture items in their own workshop just a stone’s throw away from their showroom. Their furniture design is of the highest quality and can be made to specific individual requirements in a wide range of colours, materials and sizes – for commercial and residential clients alike.

98

Now, UDesign have quite literally taken their services to a new level, opening a 400 square metre rooftop showroom (above the existing showroom) that specialises in fabrics and materials for outdoor use. Many of these furniture pieces look like they could have been created for indoor use but in fact they are ideal for the outdoors. UDesign are, in effect, bringing the indoors outside! Located in the heart of Madrid’s chic Gran Via, Hotel Indigo has drawn a strong design influence from the area’s close links with Spanish culture, fashion and architecture. The boutique-style rooms provide a “spa-inspired bathroom experience”, the gastrobar and restaurant offer locally-created Mediterranean cuisine, and the rooftop terrace is one of the best places in Madrid to view the city skyline – including the nearby Plaza Mayor and Royale Palace. Now the hotel has added a colourful new “pop” touch to its décor. Designed by Madrid-based Italian architect Teresa Sapey, the hotel’s Sky Lounge (on the top two floors), is a verdant and vibrant mini-universe of vegetation and nautical features. “People in Madrid love their terraces and rooftops,” notes hotel manager Rafael Ramírez, “so it was vital to provide this space with a unique personality.” To that end, Sapey created a “vertical Garden of Eden where colour is the main protagonist… a utopian design with a pop soul”. The 11th floor is taken up with a bar lounge and cocktail area, connected to the 12th floor rooftop terrace by a spiral staircase and infinity pool. www.hotelindigo.com / www.teresasapey.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Guests have the freedom to “connect” with the setting and enjoy a sophisticated ocean-front lifestyle in 11 “separate worlds”. These include the Siam Spa, Sapphire Bar, gardens and 360-degree restaurant, which offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and Maspalomas dunes on one side and mountains on the other. The aim of the staff is to give guests the sensation they are staying with friends, “who nurture and cultivate the care-free, bohemian spirit that prevails here”. The hotel’s rooftop restaurant comprises a spacious indoor-outdoor space where guests can mingle with each other while sipping lime-infused cocktails next to huge

panoramic windows, and savour diverse Mediterranean and Asian fusion cuisine. The Siam Spa features Mandala-inspired treatment marquees and rooms that provide a tranquil setting for original massages by Thai therapists as well as fragrant aromatherapy baths of jasmine, mint and lemon; while outside the conditions are ideal for kite surfing and other water sports. Soothing Sensations on the Costa del Sol at DoubleTree Hilton

This issue we stay close to our home base with an inside look at one of the Costa del Sol’s premier new hotel resort projects. Even for those of us living on the Coast, a weekend stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón would be the ideal way to enjoy a post-summer break to rejuvenate the mind and body. And if space at home is limited for entertaining visiting guests, noone will be complaining too much if you book them a stay at the resort. The establishment is operating under a new brand name following an agreement reached between the global hotel chain and Reserve del Higuerón at this year’s ITB Berlin tourism fair. The Costa del Sol thus becomes the first location in Europe, and one of only two worldwide, to have a Hilton Worldwide adults-only (recommended for guests 16 years and over) resort and spa. The sedately refined Reserva del Higuerón gated residential development is located in Benalmádena municipality, just 10 minutes from Málaga’s international airport. The hotel has been designed to create a “gallery” ambience, with a wide and diverse range of amenities and services. These include the Nagomi Spa, which was named as the second best spa in Spain by luxury travel club Voyage Privé and offers

wellness therapies, waterfalls, an indoor pool, a Turkish bath and a sauna, as well as extensive fitness facilities including tennis and paddle tennis courts, sand sports (volleyball, etc.), a gym with high-performance technology and personal trainers, yoga and pilates, and two outdoor pools. Other amenities include a shopping centre, baby massage courses, flower essences management, feng-shui and chi-kung oriental techniques, and a 250 square metre avant-garde art exhibition area. The hotel resort has a total of 177 rooms, including 24 junior suites, while its flagship restaurants are the Al Rolo (for seafood and Mediterranean cuisine) and the recently opened Sollo Restaurant by Diego Gallegos, who was named “revelation chef” at Madrid Fusión 2015. Another enticing haven for guests is the Infinity terrace bar on the top floor, with a panoramic pool, sky chill-out lounge and stunning views over the Bay of Fuengirola. Vantage GT3 Special Edition

Aston Martin’s most performance-focused road-going Vantage, the track-inspired GT3 will be limited to a production of just 100 examples. Comprehensively reengineered and significantly restyled, the car is equipped with a new iteration of the brand’s 6.0-litre V12 engine which is capable of generating up to 600 PS. It weighs in at 100 kilograms less than a standard V12 Vantage S, and is lower and wider than other Vantage models. A broader track – front and rear – brings even more composed cornering thanks to a reduction in lateral load transfer, and the use of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres provides more assured handling. The car is also equipped with cutting edge motorsport-inspired features, from the extensive use of carbon fibre inside and out to the track-focused aerodynamics pack – which includes a prominent rear wing and pronounced front splitter.

Vulcan Supercar

A track-only supercar described as Aston Martin’s “most intense and exhilarating creation to date”, the 800-plus bhp, all-carbon fibre Vulcan will be limited to just 24 examples worldwide. Owners will have the opportunity of precisely tailoring their track day experience through a graduating scale of detailed power and dynamic performance adjustments. According to Aston Martin CEO Dr Andy Palmer, the Vulcan is “a sports car for true sports car lovers… Designed and engineered to deliver a genuinely bespoke driving experience that draws on our rich heritage, this car tailors its power and handling to both the capabilities of the driver and the characteristics of the track.” Styled entirely in-house, and with a design language “hinting at the next generation of Aston Martin sports cars”, the supercar is powered by the most potent iteration yet of the company’s naturally-aspirated, 7.0-litre V12 petrol engine.

DMX Concept

One of the stars of the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, the DMX Concept was developed to “defy conventional thinking about the high luxury segment and point to a bold new future for GT travel in the 21st century.” The focus of this ambitious project is to widen the appeal of the iconic British brand and reach out to a more diverse global audience. “It promises,” says Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichman, “to make luxury GT travel stylish and more comfortable than ever before, but also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally responsible.” To those ends, the DMX Concept is capable of accommodating four adults in comfort, pays special attention to day-to-day practicality with generous luggage capacity, uses “authentic materials” on the exterior (“intended to be seen as the car’s jewellery”), has been finished in Black Pearl Chromium, a paint colour specially created to mimic the look of a genuine black pearl, and inside features non-automotive standard materials to generate a “uniquely soft, cocooning ambience.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

A Fusion of

Exquisite Tastes at UNI

Photos: David Toms The culinary concept behind UNI is essentially about balance. A combination of Japanese and Peruvian (Nikkei cuisine) and a fusion of the past with the present, in constant evolution. UNI means sea urchin in Japanese and, as to be expected, this is a key ingredient at the restaurant, which initially opened at Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa in Marbella three years ago as Namazake – with a focus on high quality gastronomy and service in a modern setting – and, after a refurbishment, re-opened as UNI (with the same owner as the renowned UNI restaurant in London). Our own visit to the restaurant more than confirmed our expectations. The dining experience is incomparable: the fish is exquisitely fresh, the flavours divine, the presentation of the dishes impeccable, and the setting exceptional. The new-look restaurant is located in Puente Romano’s Plaza Village gastronomic area, was decorated by Marbella-based French interior designer Jean Pierre Martel, and offers a highly original menu created by award-winning chef Thomas Stork. The revamped menu features a diverse range of gastronomic trends, techniques and ingredients – more expansive than the previous menu. Highlights include crispy one-bite tacos, various different ceviches (squid and prawns, sea bass and mango, one of our favourites, and lobster marinated in citric ponzu sauce, passionfruit and coriander), and strips of butterfish, tuna and salmon. The trademark sea urchin niguiri is known simply as UNI; while the tataki of Wagyu beef (another favourite) is subtly seasoned with Hawaiian black lava salt and white truffle oil.

108

Other specialities include shell crab lightly fried in Japanese-style breadcrumbs (panko) and presented with organic micro-herbs from the Axarquía area east of Málaga; miso black cod glazed with anticucho sauce (Peruvian kebab sauce); spicy tuna tartar with cream of avocado; and beautifully served tiger prawn maki. Another key creative hub in the UNI kitchen is the Japanese robata grill. For dessert, guests can discover a profusion of flavours and textures, including the restaurant’s classic dish: a lollipop of coconut and lemongrass ice-cream served with baked pineapple and hot caramel sauce. Another popular sweet is new to the menu: a mochi (Japanese rice cake) served with forest berries and a strawberry and ginger coulis. An extensive menu of sakes marries well with the Japanese cuisine, and a carefully selected range of Piscos is ideal for accompanying the Peruvian specialities. Clearly, the best plan when dining at UNI is to share dishes and experiences, then relax and enjoy a sumptuous cocktail from the new drinks menu – and live music. UNI is open every day from 8pm to midnight (dinner dress code: smart casual). The bar opens from Wednesday to Saturday until 4am, and Sunday to Tuesday until 3am. Reservations: Tel. The Return of the Tango!

The restaurant has had a facelift to give it a fresher feel whilst still offering the cosy ambience for which it has always been renowned. In the main restaurant there are intimate enclaves softly lit with enchanting tea lights for romantic diners as well more open areas with long tables for larger groups. There is an

outdoor terrace for al fresco dining and the upper floor has panoramic views over the bustling streets of Puerto Banús, which is an ideal area for private functions – so the restaurant accommodates any kind of dining preference. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes including stunning salads, homemade pasta dishes and grilled meat cooked on the grill with natural charcoal and firewood to give an authentic Argentinean barbecued taste. Luciano has set the menu at very realistic prices: for example, the prices for their starters average around €5 and their salads €7, their Argentinean entrecote is just €18 and large grilled prawns (gambones) are only €12 – making Tango one of the most reasonably-priced restaurants in the area. We were treated to a delightful salad of avocado, king prawns, fresh fruit, trout

roe, lime and coriander, then a ceviche of octopus and king prawns with Peruvian chilli sauce, and finally a succulent Angus beef with foie gras, Kenyan green bean salad and truffle perfume. All of the dishes were creatively put together and cooked superbly. They have an extremely impressive and carefully selected wine menu – we were offered the Humberto Canale red wine, which we found went perfectly with the beef. Photo: David Toms We are extremely privileged to have so many fantastic beach clubs on the southern coast of Spain. From super clubs that have become world famous to more rustic chiringuitos serving sardines on skewers, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a venue to spend the day at the beach. This summer, there has been a new beach club in town, situated on one of the Costa del Sol’s most naturally beautiful beaches. The new Siroko Beach Marbella, just east of Marbella and directly down on the beach from the main highway near Andalucía Lab, opened its doors in the height of summer and was immediately a hit with locals and holidaymakers alike due to its impressive Mediterranean menu and contemporary-chic décor. The restaurant was totally reformed by Argentinean owners Carla and Francis Malfatto with the help of local architect Ismael Mérida, and a few of their friends and family. Inside, the large open-plan restaurant is airy and bright with oversized wooden lampshades looming over large cream dining tables made of recycled wood. The wooden decking throughout the restaurant has Moroccan rugs placed all around, giving the restaurant a truly “Ibiza-style” feel. Outside at the entrance you can dine or enjoy a drink looking out onto the beach with its stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea, which is just a stone’s throw away. The chill-out garden lounge at the rear of the restaurant is an in-

teresting feature and not commonplace for a beach restaurant, but it is popular with visitors seeking some respite from the hubbub of the beach. You can refresh yourself with a drink from their extensive bar menu, including a cocktail or a glass of one of their many Spanish wines on offer; and, if you want to dine, there are plenty of fresh salads and fish, meat and rice dishes as well as homemade desserts to choose from. The dishes are all beautifully presented on the plate and offered at very competitive prices. Siroko Beach has sunbeds on the beach, including a towel, drink and waiter service for just €7.50, providing luxury at great value. What is more, there is a resident DJ playing upbeat tunes in the background to create the perfect beach atmosphere. Siroko Beach is a must-visit as it has something for everyone. The balance of good quality food in a sophisticated yet laidback environment makes this beach club quite special. Siroko Beach Urb. Lunamar, Exit 189.5 Km. Wine

NOTES

One Region One Grape Variety By AJ Linn

Even the most hardened wine buff can be excused for not bothering to search out wines made with the red mencía grape. Until a little more than 20 years ago few people outside the El Bierzo region, its spiritual and physical home in north-west Spain, had even heard of it. But, as often happens, it only needed one forward-looking winemaker to start producing some serious stuff for aficionados to sit up and take notice. Bierzo is a green, hilly region, hemmed in by the sierras of Castilla, León and Galicia. The centre is Cacabelos, a bustling market town on the Camino de Santiago. Nor is this attractive riverside town Bierzo’s only gem. Ponferrada and Vilafranca del Bierzo boast medieval monasteries while the smaller wine hamlets like Arganza and Corullon are ageless. The mineral-rich slate soil that made it a Roman mining area is also ideal for vine growing, and the ancient vines that in many cases are over 100 years old are what make the region special. The mencía is not exclusive to the Bierzo region and is also used in neighbouring Valdeorras, Monterei and Ribera Sacra, all independent, officially recognised wine regions, but it is in Bierzo where, in spite of the ever-present temptation to blend it with other grape varieties, the bodegas have wisely stuck to this grape. As Eric Asamov, doyen of wine critics, wrote in The New York Times, “Bierzo? Absolutely… if you get the opportunity to taste a good bottle, with its haunting, exotic wildflower, liquorice and fruit flavours, you can’t help but remember it… They are giving the world mencía, and they ought to be congratulated for that. It could so easily have been syrah, again.” Spain’s rising wine star, Álvaro Palacios, brought the Priorat region to the world’s attention in the late 1980s, and in 1999 he and his cousin established Descendientes de J. Palacios in Bierzo. While in Priorat the grape varieties garnacha and cariñena were familiar outside Spain, Bierzo’s mencía was new, but unswervingly sticking to it Palacios and the other well-known bodegas of the region, notably Dominio de Tares, Paixar and Divinaluz Amigo, made the right decision. Ageing the

114

wine in oak seems to work, and it is not overpowered by the experience as many lesser reds are. The mencía variety is quite difficult in the vineyard and, since it does not produce high yields, this makes it a challenging prospect for growers and winemakers. It is prone to mildew, and can lose its typical acidity quickly if for any reason it is not harvested on time. Mencia’s high alcohol and high acidity must be kept in check to retain the wine’s balance. Not incomers but an established Bierzo family, the Amigos decided in 2002 to refurbish an old bodega in Parandones (León) and clean up vineyards that, in some cases, had 130-year old vines. The total number of small plots currently in their possession is 94, totalling 14 hectares, meaning that some of the mini-vineyards are no bigger then a tennis court. Although the family has a winemaking tradition, there had never been any business drive, and it needed brothers Miguel Ángel and Javier to get things on a commercial footing. After a decade and a half there is little doubt that their wines are among the best of the region, and what makes it all the more noteworthy is that neither of the brothers previously worked in any other bodega or wine region. The name of the bodega is Luzdivina Amigo and, although there are Bierzo reds that are priced at astronomical figures, the Amigo wines range from a modest €6.50 to €30. In fact the white Baloiro, made from Godello, Doña Blanca and Jerez grapes, is only €8 and in many experts’ opinion one of Spain’s most interesting white wines. The oak-aged white Godello costs €15, but to enjoy the reds from this bodega sufficient to start with the ViñadeMoya at €6.50, though upgrading to the Tinto Balioro Crianza (€12.75) or the Reserva (€14.75) should not break the bank. The flagship Viñademoya Leiros is an exclusively old vine mencía, and is considered by many to be among the best wines of the entire region. www.bodegaluz.com

DELI Gourmet Olive Oil

Preserving a Timeless Treasure

Almost 70 years after the arrival of the Hohenlohe family in Marbella, his descendants have launched the first organic gourmet oil on the Costa del Sol. Promoted by Sandro Gamazo Hohenlohe, this new extra virgin olive oil has been named Belvís de las Navas in honour of his grandmother, Piedad Yturbe y Scholtz von Hermensdorff (“Piedita”, marquise of Belvís de las Navas), who together with her husband, Prince Max zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, settled in Marbella back in the 1940s. The idea of launching an organic oil arose four years ago when the family decided to extract oil from their farm in Istán for their personal consumption and discovered that the result was an extremely distinctive and exceptional oil. From that moment, work began on restoring the olive grove, which had been overlooked for decades, and this revealed a huge variety of existing trees. Cultivated between Istán and Marbella, the innovative biological oil that has been produced as a result of their endeavours is now being presented for the first time on the Costa del Sol. Thanks to the wide diversity of existing olives, Belvís de las Navas is a complex oil that releases aromas of freshly cut grass, artichoke and tomato with almond notes. These characteristics have been enhanced by harvesting the olives at their optimum moment and processing them in low-temperature conditions. In

116

the mouth, a spicy and bitter medium-intensity flavour can be tasted, resulting in an extremely balanced and harmonious oil. The design of the packaging and the marketing presentation have both been studiously developed as part of a creative and carefully planned project. Its introduction into the competitive market of gourmet oils will be undertaken with a new, fresh, stylish, modern and classic image. This has been made possible thanks to the creativity of Marie-Caroline Willms, wife of Sandro Gamazo. In fact, the work has involved the whole family, in all its aspects, as the drawing printed on the bottle – with views of the olive grove and the Straits of Gibraltar in the background – was created by Pablo Hohenlohe, grandson of “Piedita”. It truly is a 100 per cent family concept. The effort and determination with which the family has embarked on this enterprise is an expression of their commitment to diversification and to contributing to the region’s economy, especially Istán. “Encouraging the restoration and care of the olive groves in our environment, a historical legacy and treasure of this land, is one of the objectives of this company,” said Sandro Gamazo. A Diet Pill Made of Spinach Extract

Prostate Cancer Divided Into Five Categories

Popeye was right all along. Eating spinach may be really good for you. A new study has found that consuming the concentrated extract of thylakoids found in spinach can reduce hunger and cravings. Thylakoids encourage the release of satiety hormones, which is very beneficial in slowing down fat digestion. The researchers conducted a study with 30 men and 30 women who were overweight or obese. They consumed either the spinach extract or a placebo in random order at least a week apart. The researchers looked at cholesterol levels and glucose levels before a normal breakfast, followed by a dose of the extract and a standard lunch four hours later. After another four hours, pizza was served. Throughout the daily activities various blood tests and responses were gathered. The results showed that the spinach extract containing thylakoids increased satiety over a two-hour period compared to a placebo. There were no differences in plasma lipids and energy intake at dinner, but there were gender differences observed. The researchers reported that thylakoid consumption might influence gender-specific food cravings. In a previous study, it was found that in women a reduced urge for sweets was significant after a single dose of the spinach extract, and the reduced urge for sweets was sustained throughout the study. The researchers have published their findings in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Cancer investigators In England have for the first time identified that there are five distinct types of prostate cancer and found a way to distinguish between them. The findings could have important implications for how prostate cancer is treated in the future. It might help better identify which men are candidates for active surveillance (watchful waiting) or aggressive therapy. The researchers from the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and Addenbrooke’s Hospital studied samples of healthy and cancerous prostate tissue from more than 250 men. By looking for abnormal chromosomes and measuring the activity of 100 different genes linked to the disease they were able to group the tumours into five different types. Each type had a characteristic genetic fingerprint. This analysis was better at predicting which cancers were likely to be the most aggressive than the tests currently used by doctors, including the PSA test and Gleason score. “Our exciting results show that prostate cancer can be classified into five genetically-different types,” said study author Dr. Alastair Lamb from the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. “These findings could help doctors decide on the best course of treatment for each individual patient, based on the characteristics of their tumour. The next step is to confirm these results in bigger studies and drill down into the molecular ‘nuts and bolts’ of each specific prostate cancer type. By carrying out more research into how the different diseases behave we might be able to develop more effective ways to treat prostate cancer patients in the future, saving more lives.”

The Sunshine Drug

What’s this new health drug that all the scientists are talking about? The one that is good for our bones, our mental health, our immune system… the one that prevents rickets. Yes, of course – it’s vitamin D! This new “wonder drug” is now thought to provide a wealth of health and well-being benefits – and we don’t even need a prescription to get it. As far back as 1922 Edward Mallenby showed that childhood deficiency in vitamin D led to rickets, but fortunately over the course of 80 years or so we have pretty much eliminated rickets. However, in the last decade cases of rickets have risen alarmingly. In one report it was shown that one in four toddlers in the UK had low Vitamin D levels, and in the US a massive one in three people are thought to be deficient. We can obtain vitamin D from our diet but there are relatively few foods that provide it in adequate quantities. Oily fish like tuna and mackerel are good sources, and beef and egg yolks and some cheeses provide a little, but the main source of vitamin D comes from exposure to sunlight. The reason for the increased prevalence of rickets is likely to be complex (especially when considered worldwide) but in the UK too little sun may be the most important cause. Children and teenagers spend less time outdoors than 50 or so years ago; increased traffic, safety fears and the lure of a good computer game make this a fact of life. But over-vigilance from the dangers of the sun is also a contributing factor. Nowadays we have even more reasons to ensure we get enough Vitamin D. There are quite a few studies showing that in Alzheimer’s disease people who have the condition have lower levels of vitamin D than those without. It’s not known yet whether this is causal or not: it could be that people with the disease were just

120

By Rachel Garrod

less likely to go outside and the low levels were coincidental. However, if the opportunity arises, it’s another good reason to be in the sun when we can. In addition, vitamin D may be an important player in helping to protect against respiratory diseases such as asthma, emphysema and even tuberculosis. Just last year research highlighted that people who were severely deficient in vitamin D had twice the risk of a respiratory disease or infection than those with the highest levels. The authors of the study suggested that vitamin D might help the immune system. What does all this mean for us in Spain? Well we certainly get enough opportunities to see the sun and, of course, we have to protect ourselves. However, sunlight filtered by windows or by high sun factor protection will not penetrate the skin enough to stimulate the production of vitamin D. Twenty to thirty minutes of unprotected time should be adequate for most people, although those with darker skin will require longer exposure and on cloudy days more time could be needed. So are you getting enough sunlight to top up your daily dose of vitamin D? We must not forget the sun’s damaging effects but it is important not to overdo that caution. Let’s enjoy the summer a little more and make sure we get our daily allowance of this free health drug. Rachel Garrod PhD MSc is a physiotherapy lecturer and stop smoking counsellor Tel. American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was active for only a brief period during the 1980s but his body of work is considered among the most remarkable of the 20th century. Reflecting his beginnings in conceptual graffiti, and regularly referencing street art, Basquiat combined high and low culture to present a vision of the world that he described as “a springboard to deeper truths about the individual”. One of the most important exhibitions dedicated to the artist, “Jean-Michel Basquiat: Now’s the Time”, is currently on show at the Guggenheim Museum Blibao (until 1 November). The exhibition includes about 100 large-scale paintings and

Self-Portrait, 1984 – Yoav Harlap Collection

drawings from public and private collections across the United States and Europe, organised around the themes that inspired Basquiat, who died in 1988 aged just 27. His powerful and emotionally charged works explore issues such as racial identity and history, and as an artist he immersed himself in high art and graffiti, jazz and rap, punk and pop culture, anatomy textbooks and comics – channelling this complexity into layered works that presaged today’s internet culture. www.guggenheim-bilbao.es (All photos © Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Licensed by Artestar, New York)

A Bold Modern Aesthetic For husband and wife Dutch design team Jan and Monique des Bouvrie, the aim in designing interior and exterior spaces – both commercial and residential – is to create “a self-contained universe of modernity where bold and noteworthy art plays a significant role”. This philosophy is reflected and outlined in a new book published by teNeues, “des Bouvrie Architecture Interior”, which showcases highlights of their body of work to date.

Their style is defined as cerebral, “with a sleek appeal that artfully interjects powerful jolts of solid colour to create dramatic and original statements… coolly elegant and refined, their spaces are straightforward with no hint of obfuscation”. www.teneues.com Photos: © des Bouvrie Architecture Interior

The World of Shabby Chic Author, designer and entrepreneur Rachel Ashwell has just published her ninth book, “The World of Shabby Chic: Beautiful Homes, My Story & Vision”. The book is described as “a celebratory look back at 25 years of the inspirations, the joys and tears, the life lessons, and the found treasures that have made up her journey in pioneering the now-iconic Shabby Chic aesthetic”. According to Ashwell, the essence of shabby chic is “a timeless, romantic and charming interior filled with beautifully worn and well-loved objects, a palette of pales and pastels with captivating surprises, flowers in abundance, and the promise of enveloping comfort”. www.shabbychic.com Photo: © The World Of Shabby Chic: Beautiful Homes, My Story & Vision by Rachel Ashwell, Rizzoli New York, 2015 HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Dry River

New Fishing Book by Costa-based Author Not far from the developed coastal fringe of the Costa del Sol there are a number of inland waterways that remain relatively unexplored and act as havens for wildlife. These hidden jewels are among the subjects described in a new book by local author Paul Hogan. A passionate fly fisherman, blogger (www.fishydreams.com) and keen painter, Hogan has been fishing on his local river, the Guadalhorce, for several years and his fly fishing on this river has been featured on national Spanish television. He notes that he is particularly passionate about a species of freshwater fish called the Gypsy barbel, which is endemic to the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Most weekends he will “sneak off” to the riverbank to see if he can tempt them to the simple flies he ties himself. Dry River brings the Guadalhorce to life and explores the natural history of this and other inland waterways, most notably La Concepción reservoir, a short distance inland from Marbella and Puerto Banús. The book is illustrated with watercolour paintings by the author as well as paintings from renowned American angler and artist James Prosek. Significant Milestone for Pacesetting Group This summer Costa Women celebrated an important stage in the group’s growth, welcoming the 4,000th member. Launched in 2010, Costa Women describes itself as “probably the largest free community for women living in, or considering relocating to, Spain”. The group has a busy website where woman share information about their lives in Spain, and this online activity creates offline activities across Spain – with 12 regular gatherings providing opportunities for women to learn about local charities, hobbies, interests, cultures and inspiring communities. The website is in English but there are groups in different languages supported by women from 57 different countries. In addition to its social aspect, Costa Women also provides a resource for women in business, and to that end it has organised three International Women’s Day events as well as regular business breakfasts and workshops. Inheritance in Spain Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers Asociados

According to Spanish legislation, there are three types of heirs: voluntary, those entitled to a reserved share, and legatees. Voluntary heirs are those appointed in the will. If they die before the testator, the right to inherit is not passed on to their descendants. Heirs entitled to a reserved share are, in essence, the children or descendants. Should there be no children, this share will go to the parents or ascendants. Spanish law acknowledges one-third of the estate of the deceased person for this category of heir. Legatees inherit specific assets such as an apartment, jewels or car. The legatees must be appointed in the will and their share cannot diminish the non-disposable reserved share. SHARING THE INHERITANCE Inheritance in Spain is divided into three shares. One-third of the non-disposable reserved share (“legítima”) is one-third of the estate of which the testator cannot freely dispose. This portion of the estate must be devolved to the heirs as mentioned previously (second type of heir). One-third of the “mejora” (improvement) may be distributed either in equal parts or unequally among the heirs. Some heirs might receive more, or they

might all receive an equal part. It is also possible to exclude heirs from this part. The testator has the absolute freedom, or free disposition, to leave one-third of the inheritance to any person they consider appropriate. DISINHERITING A CHILD OR DESCENDANT In essence, it is possible to disinherit children or descendants in the event of their denying maintenance to the parents or ascendants, or if they use defamatory language towards them or physically or verbally abuse them. DISINHERITING A SPOUSE In Spain it is possible to disinherit the spouse if she or he did not comply with marital duties, denied maintenance to the children or spouse, or made an attempt on the testator’s life.
