ABOUT THE COVER With an estimated 1.2 million-plus pools in Spain – one-quarter of them in Andalucía – Spanish tile design is at the forefront of the industry, with a wide range of styles from classic and formal to more flamboyant creations.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago we were talking about pools, barbecues, backyard cricket and entertaining family and friends in the garden. And in fact it wasn’t. This is, after all, southern Spain, where the winter chill bites gently in December, remains fairly benevolent over the following three months (apart from the occasional downpour or wind alert) then starts to disperse around the end of February. It’s not officially spring yet (early March) but it certainly seems like it.

So, for some early spring planning and cleaning, this issue we look at pools and their surround areas: outdoor furnishings, maintenance advice and safety tips, especially when young children are involved. As this remains something of a transitional period when it comes to the weather, we also take a look at dining room tables and chairs for both the outdoors (during the day) and inside for when the evening air is still a little nippy.

In our Boutique and Eco Trends sections, we preview a wonderfully diverse range of lamps available from top global brands this year; check out some of the latest gadgets – and other “things” – on the market; discover how furniture makers and product creators are incorporating Pantone’s new colour of the year, “Radiant Orchid”, into their designs; and – most importantly – note that in March the United Nations is commemorating International Forest and Tree Day and World Water Day. Finally, we visit two of the year’s premier property and home décor exhibitions, Maison & Objet in Paris and Feria Hábitat Valencia, where – we are delighted to report – the general mood was upbeat.

There were promising signs for business in 2014, and exhibitors left with a renewed sense of optimism and confidence for the immediate future.

Japanese Aesthetics and Danish Functionality Launched worldwide by BoConcept, the new fusion collection by nendo has been designed from a desire to create new functions and visual effects by fusing together two different elements.

Creating Harmonious Living Spaces

Xavier Gago and Ramiro Bermúdez are constantly demonstrating their exciting ideas through the medium of interior design and lighting, creating harmony and versatility within a living space. They are not only interior designers but also lighting specialists and artists in plastic, and have completed many projects in Punta del Este (Uruguay), Buenos Aires, Chile, Berlin and Spain.

Artist Xavier Gago sculptures metal and glass in a wide range of self-taught techniques. When creating a space, they try to cross over cultural barriers, looking at the composition, arrangement and harmony to accommodate the needs of each individual. As Xavier points out, “Each living space has its own identity and the feeling of space and freedom within the basic four walls is in its conception. The lighting, for example, is a fundamental part of the decoration of a room and allows us to perceive a living space in many different ways. Delineating these areas creates intermediate settings, and so the scene is set.”

Honour for Veteran Marbella Wine Writer Marbella journalist Andrew J Linn, a long-time stalwart of wine writing in Spain, was honoured at a celebration in Marbella dedicated to him “…for his appreciation of flamenco and his love of our best wines”. The event, held at Ereaga, was attended by many of Andrew’s friends and fellow aficionados, as well as regulars of the Marbella Business Institute (founded 1983), of which Andrew has been chairman for nearly three decades. After the luncheon a lively flamenco show, starring Marbella’s own Maria Alba and other artists, went on into the small hours.

MIMMA COLLECTION

Antique Harp Donated to Málaga Museum A harp made by Sebastian Erard in 1819 has joined the collection of the MIMMA (Museo Interactivo de la Música de Málaga) thanks to a donation from author and harpist Marion Leigh. After a long journey that began in London on 3 November 1819, the antique harp arrived at the museum in February.

The harp was given to Marion, who spends winters in Guadalmina, as a birthday present in 1995, when she was living in Baltimore. It had been found in poor condition in a barn in Pennsylvania and partially restored by a colleague of Marion’s husband.

Marion’s first novel, “The Politician’s Daughter”, an adventure thriller featuring Marine Unit Sergeant Petra Minx of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was released in Spain in 2011; and her second novel in the Petra Minx series, “The Man in a Black Shirt”, is set in the Bahamas, Las Vegas and the northern Great Lakes of North America. www.marionleigh.com / www.mimma.es

Champagne Refurbishment of Paris Boutique Coinciding with the Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris, Cappellini unveiled a new look for their showroom at Blvd. Saint Germain, featuring a champagne colour as a natural tribute to the French capital. The designer’s first survey exhibition in Europe since 1999, “Marcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk” is also the first-ever large-scale presentation of Wanders’ work, and the first major design exhibition at the Stedelijk since its reopening in 2012. Running until 15 June, the exhibition encompasses designs from Wanders’ entire oeuvre, from the late 1980s to the present day. More than 400 objects are on view in the monumental lower-level gallery space in the new wing of the Stedelijk.

Forest Diversity

The inaugural International Day of Forest and the Tree is on 21 March. Urging governments, businesses and all sectors of society to commit to reducing deforestation, preventing forest degradation, reducing poverty and promoting sustainable livelihoods for all forest-dependent peoples, United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon noted that: • Forests cover one-third of the Earth’s land mass, performing vital functions around the world.

• Around 1.6 billion people – including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures – depend on forests for their livelihood.

• Forests are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than half the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects.

• Forests provide shelter, jobs and security for forest-dependent populations.

• They play a key role in our battle against climate change. Forests contribute to the balance of oxygen, carbon dioxide and humidity in the air, and protect watersheds, which supply fresh water to rivers.

Despite all of these ecological, economic, social and health benefits, according to the UN, “We are destroying the very forests we need to survive. Global deforestation continues at an alarming rate – 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed annually. Deforestation accounts for 12 to 20 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.”

Perfect lighting at all times.” Years ago lighting was often overlooked when decorating a home, but we now realise that lighting affects mood and is slowly becoming a centrepiece to a room and a pivotal element in interior design. From bright and colourful, gold and bold to delicate pastel shades, colours and designs in lighting have become extremely diverse.

A room that has been decorated sparsely or adorned with extremely neutral colours can be brought to life with a bright statement light fixture. On the contrary, a

Pool Pleasantries One of the many appealing aspects of living in southern Spain is that winter seems to blend almost seamlessly – and quickly – into summer without passing through spring. It is one of the most commonly used natural stones in contemporary architecture, and is ideal for façades and wall cladding as well as flooring.

Providing an attractive and natural finish to any pool, Pebbletec has many advantages over other forms of pool interiors. • Saving on refill water, helping to avoid skin irritation and reducing the smell of chlorine, a salt electrolysis unit uses a simple process that converts salt into chlorine when it comes into contact with the water, then operates inversely to recycle the chlorine back into salt. The pool water is thus disinfected naturally without the need for storing chemical products.

SAFETY FIRST Advisory laws governing pool safety products and procedures have been passed by the European Parliament for both public and private swimming pools. In many cases, however, they have not become universally enforceable directives applying throughout the EU. In Andalucía, for example, a law decree applies to communities of 20 or more residential units but, as Rudi Kaiser of Marbellabased Andalucía Glass & Steel notes, it is up to the town halls to enforce the regulations, which specify that, when the pool is unattended or not in use, it must be fenced off with a lockable gate to prevent unaccompanied minors from accessing the pool area.

One Costa del Sol town hall that is taking a strict stance on the law is Mijas, reportedly issuing a deadline of this Easter for communities to abide by the regulations. Other municipalities are expected to follow suit, and it is also anticipated that similar laws will soon be introduced for private pools.

For Kaiser, the key issue is not so much the legalities but rather ensuring safety, especially when young children are involved. “It’s like seal belts in the UK 30 years ago,” he says. “Statistically, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death in children under five, and for every child who dies three others who almost drown suffer permanent brain damage. It takes less than two minutes for a child to drown and this tragic event almost always happens silently, with no warning to parents that their child is in trouble.” Installing adequate

protection is no guarantee, he says, “but you stand a better chance of it not happening”.

Maison & Objet moves on to Asia in March following its latest edition in Paris, which showed “promising signs of renewed vigour and expansion”.

The inaugural Maison & Objet Asia will be held in Singapore from 10 to 13 March; with further global expansion planned in 2015 (12-15 May) with Maison & Objet Americas in Miami Beach.

In the meantime, more than 500 new exhibitors participated in the January 2014 edition of Maison & Objet Paris. According to the organisers, “This significant increase illustrates not only the proactive work done in keeping the show on the leading edge, but also the event’s undeniable appeal. This is particularly true for international exhibitors, who see Maison & Objet as the most effective platform for expanding their business. Maison & Objet Paris has become the European show at which the greatest number of Japanese décor and design firms choose to exhibit.”

Another positive trend was a marked increase in international visitors. “This steady trend has been evident over the past few years and was clearly confirmed in January with the return of European visitors, but also a significant increase in overseas-export visitors. This growth can be explained by the increased international promotion… (and) is also proof of the solid comprehension of the complementary nature of these events and Maison & Objet’s stature as the gold standard in this realm.”

The January exhibition invited exhibitors and visitors to embark on “distant inner journeys”, with the main spring-summer trends theme of “Elsewhere”.

Positive Outcome for Exhibitors The 50th anniversary edition of Feria Hábitat Valencia concluded with a general sense of optimism and confidence for the future. Organisers reported that the four events held under the umbrella initiative of “See You in Valencia 2014” – Cevisama, Feria Habitat Valencia, Fimma and Maderalia – had exceeded expectations, “with a high level of business, a strong international component and a prominent influx of buyers”.

Internationalism, innovation, design and quality were once again showcased at Cevisama – the International Exhibition of Ceramics for Architecture, Bathrooms & Kitchens, Natural Stone, Raw Materials, Enamels & Colours, Frits and Machinery – in Valencia in February.

A total of 697 brands exhibited at the 2014 show, up on the previous year, and 218 of these were from outside Spain. Interestingly, the number of Italian brands exhibiting increased by nearly one-third. As Cevisama manager Carmen Álvarez explained, “More Italian brands have come to Cevisama because they were attracted by the abundance of buyers from markets such as Russia, northern Africa

and the Arab world. These visitors are professionals who are loyal to our exhibition, and more and more are coming each year.”

Cevisama 2014 highlighted how ceramics are increasingly taking over the home, as well as the perfection achieved by digital printing techniques that create more personalised finishings and upmarket living spaces.

UNIQUE SUSTAINABLE INDONESIAN FURNISHINGS

Photos: David Toms Tell us something about your professional background and why you chose to set up a business here in Spain?

My professional background is not really anything to do with furniture. Before coming to Spain I was working and living in London for 17 years in the import and export business as well as offshore financing. I decided that I wanted to live in a warmer climate and, as I used to have a restaurant in Torremolinos in the seventies, I chose to live in Marbella. My sister Josephine was living in the Puente Romano so it seemed an obvious place to choose.

I then had to decide what I wanted to do... I didn’t want to go to back into the restaurant business and, though the real estate business was booming, it wasn’t really an option for me so I decided to choose the furniture business as I had many contacts in Indonesia. I figured that I could be involved in the active real estate market by furnishing properties with beautiful Indonesian furniture pieces.

The Indonesian wood species is very hard and of excellent quality so I decided that I didn’t want to use new wood but, instead, reclaimed wood offering sustainable furniture from Indonesia using old wood from old bridges from the 17th and 18th centuries and railway sleepers made of iron and teak wood, for example. Once I had made this decision, I opened my workshop in Bali. The wood species comes from the island of Java and then I take it to Bali for finishing.

What are the basic principles behind Tiara?

Selling directly to the public and being a retail shop… Tiara is named after my eldest child. She used to work in the shop but she is now a mother with a small baby.

How do you summarise the market and how do you differentiate your business from others in your sector?

Most of the furniture items in my shop are unique pieces. Once the item is sold, there is nothing exactly the same again in the shop. Everything is limited edition.

People may not realise that we can actually furnish an entire home as we offer beds, curtains, sofas... everything.

What inspires you in your work and what is your vision for your company?

I always look for new ideas and wood species: for example, my latest collection will be made from wood from a sunken ship. They lift the wood that dates from the 17th or 18th century from the sea. Indonesia is rich in ingredients and is the hub of exportation of wooden furniture.

I would love to expand. We have opened a concession in the garden centre in Estepona, Agrojardin. I chose Agrojardin because it is very popular and es-

tablished and you can buy everything there, not only plants but also dogs and cats, so I decided to build an Indonesian house within the Agrojardin garden centre.

We have also just opened a shop in the small designer district in Barcelona in Carrer Bilbao. Barcelona is a very fashionable and creative city and they are building a large project at sea which will be very interesting. Also, Barcelona is near to the Balearics and other large cities so it is a well-positioned city. In Barcelona I sell more to designers and architects, whereas here in Marbella I sell more to individual private clients. I would like to distribute my furniture to Madrid through my collaboration with Divatto. I already have furniture in Divatto’s showroom on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Dubai is also of great interest to me so I’m looking at options there too.

What future trends do you envisage in your industry?

We are intending to offer a package deal with developers. The future in our industry is to offer more ecological and reclaimed wood.

How important is sustainability in the concept of Tiara Decoración?

It is my whole concept. All of my furniture is sustainable and made from old teak wood and iron wood from bridges and railway sleepers.

More Confidence in the Market

WHY THE BRITS MAY MISS OUT! There is no doubt that the real estate market is moving again. Most reputable real estate agents reported 2013 as their best year for sales since the heady years of the last property boom, and early reports indicate similar levels of interest and activity so far in 2014.

It has been well documented that the Costa del Sol real estate market appeals to a broad range of nationalities but, whereas the boom years welcomed UK buyers as the vast majority of overseas investors, in 2013 there was much more of an even split, with the Belgian and Scandinavian markets particularly strong.

Of course, UK buyers have been hit by a triple whammy of a tightening credit market, a lingering recession and a derisory exchange rate that saw sterling reach parity with the single currency. But it seems the British love affair with Spanish property never really stopped. Evidence from within our own business points to 60 per cent of enquiries last year coming from Brits, but UK buyers only accounted for 25 per cent of our sales. This would indicate a “frustrated” demand: i.e. the Brits remained interested in buying, but there were simply too many obstacles in the way.

It seems that this is set to change in 2014, with the UK emerging strongly from recession and the pound now valued at around €1.20. Put very simply, it means there is more confidence in the market and British buyers can get 20 per cent more for their money than previously.

Of course, this good news also works in other ways. Firstly, British sellers in Spain will be 20 per cent worse off once their funds are exchanged back to sterling; and, secondly, higher levels of demand naturally lead to a hardening in prices. Already we are seeing the margin between “asking price” and “sales price” getting smaller and, although there are plenty of well-priced properties out there, buyers who think they can get lucky with half-price offers are in for a rude awakening, particularly in the most highly-regarded areas of the Costa del Sol, where properties are in high demand once again.

I fear that the thousands of Brits now ready and able to snap up a bargain on the back of outdated pricing “advice” they have read in the media are in danger of missing out. If 2012 was the year of the repo and 2013 was the year of the bargain, 2014 seems set to be the year of recovery.

Magical Luxury Haven

Some people might see the steep nature of the plot as a problem, but the owners were not put off. The design has taken full advantage of this with a dramatic infinity pool at ground floor entry level, together with a large lawn area, outdoor kitchen and covered entertaining area connected to the main house, giving down to a second large lawn area, ideal for a children’s play area and level with the leisure suite and family space.

As with any individual villa project, it is the architect’s job, not to say the measure of his or her skills, to take the clients’ brief, matched to the plot of land, and create something unique and special from that starting point. It is safe to say that both the owners and the architect are extremely proud of the final result, which is both magical and a home.

Real Salads

Reserve a corner of your garden or apartment terrace It has been a great disappointment over the last decade that the availability of a diverse range of fresh, tasty and chemical-free salad ingredients has been more difficult to obtain weekly, let alone daily. So eating a genuine healthy Mediterranean diet in which salads often feature in the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner does not always appear easy.

However, the solution is readily available for every expat and Spaniard. How our garden evolved to enable us to live well is now described in the idea/information-backed booklet “Living Well From Our Garden – Mediterranean Style”.

Before saying more let me illustrate what I regard as a tasty healthy winter salad, especially as it is just a few degrees above zero. For lunch today I wandered past our raised beds, container garden and odd corners of the larger general garden with a small wicker basket and pair of scissors.

What ended up in the basket and on my plate of salad was as follows…

Leaves from celtus, chicory, dandelion, parsley, rocket, purslane, alfalfa, Swiss chard and green and red lettuce plants, a wild celery plant, pineapple sage flowers and leaves, a hibiscus flower and two from nasturtium plants, together with a few leaves (a seed pod would have been added if available), two tiny carrots and their leaves, young garlic and onion plants and a couple of leaves cut off a garlic chive plant, a rue leaf, chopped rosemary, fennel, perella flowers and leaves, together with oregano, lavender, mint and thyme leaves, a young lemon leaf and a few flowers, a viola flower, rose petals, chopped almonds and walnuts, single succulent leaves from kalanchoe and crassula plants, plus a few olives and olive oil from our own trees.

Incidentally, our drive to be self-sufficient was stimulated by passing through self-sufficient Pyrenean mountain villages and chatting to friendly and supportive villagers when walking across Spain to celebrate my retirement and recovery from two cancer operations. In our own valley, various generations of humanoids had taken 30,000 years to cultivate productivity and 30 years to destroy 90 per cent of traditional agriculture, which was what had tempted me to move to Spain in the first place. That amazing retirement odyssey in described in my latest and 21st book.

Finally, do use your investment in Spanish property to live well, even when the short financial gains are disappointing.

For True Connoisseurs A LEGENDARY SPORTS BOAT

For years the runabout had been stored away in the corner of a boatyard, hidden under old tarpaulin. Enthusiasts were aware of the existence of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s Riva Aquarama but, after its owner passed away in 1993, the exact location of the legendary sports boat remained a secret. Then a Dutch Riva collector tracked it down and had it fully restored to original condition by Riva World, specialists in the restoration of Riva boats.

Built 45 years ago for and commissioned by Ferruccio Lamborghini, founder of the Italian sports car brand, the fastest Aquarama in the world is now back on the water after three years of restoration work.

Sandro Zani, owner of the Dutch Riva restorer, travelled to Italy on a regular basis, including visits to the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum, in order to document all the details and elements of the original, before beginning the extensive restoration.

During the work, the wooden hull was repaired and sanded, with no fewer than 25 coatings applied, the wooden interior was repaired and the seats were reupholstered in the famous Riva design. Lamborghini’s Riva also received “a new beating heart”: twin Lamborghini V12 engines from the first Lamborghini ever created, the 350 GT. As Sandro Zani explains, “One of the two original engines from the Riva can still be seen in the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum in Italy, but unfortunately wasn’t available for sale for this project. That is why we bought two other V12 engines… and converted them so they would be fully suitable for use in a boat. Thanks to the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum, we were allowed to disassemble and re-create various original parts of the original engine in the museum. In addition, Lino Morosini, who 45 years ago was head of the Riva engine division and one of the fathers of the Aquarama Lamborghini, provided us with additional information

with which we were able to adapt the twin V12 powerhouses, water-cooled via specially designed closed circuit, so they were completely in line with the original specimens.â&#x20AC;?

The late test driver and developer Bob Wallace provided the Riva World team with input for getting the two Lamborghini engines ready for maritime use, for the conversion of the engines so one would rotate to the left and the other to the right, for increasing the torque at low revs and for the manufacture of unique parts.

The result was two roaring Lamborghini 4.0 V12s, each with 350hp and equipped with six twin Weber carburettors (12 in total) with a rev range between 700 and 5,000 rpm and a formidable torque that through various adjustments to the engines, including increased bore and longer stroke, is already available from around 1,500 revs. Together they give the Riva Aquarama Lamborghini a top speed of around 48 knots, compared to 40 knots for regular Aquaramas that Riva fits with twin V8 units as standard equipment.

After test runs in the Netherlands last summer the Riva was transported to Italy, where it was given free rein on Lago dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Iseo under the watchful eye of Carlos Riva, the founder of the brand and the man who, back in 1968, was himself urged

by Ferruccio Lamborghini to build the Aquarama in just three months!

Gourmet Harmony When architects Murman Arkitekter were commissioned to design the Tusen restaurant, their main objective was to create a building that harmonised with the landscape’s character, in shape and material. Situated in the Ramundberget ski resort on a small hill where the tree line meets the mountains, the building – a category winner at the 2009 World Architecture Festival – sits 1,000 metres above sea level between slow-growing birch trees, brooks and rocks, with expansive views over the Helags and Skars mountains in central-western Sweden.

“Our ambition,” explains Murman Arkitekter, ”Is that the interior is both intimate and spacious. The façade material is provided by the surrounding nature, and birch logs stand like a huge protecting screen towards the icy Nordic winds.

We used the same material for the restaurant in the exterior as well as the interior. The round shape is natural in the exposed situation and it allows the snow to stay on the façade. It lets the cold winds pass and offers maximum visual contact from the inside, opening its embrace and forming a protected outdoor

space where you can sit in the sun and look towards the white mountains. In one way it is a mini society, with its own mountain water and mini sewage treatment works.”

Providing a cosy, delightfully quirky haven for mountain visitors, both après ski in winter and post-hiking in summer, Tusen serves a mix of contemporary and classic Scandinavian cuisine, in a dining room with capacity for 125 guests.

The restaurant uses eco-friendly products and contemporary sustainable designs such as Planika’s bio fireplace Totem Commerce, which can be placed both inside and outdoors. The Commerce burner technology used in the product makes it safe for luxurious commercial areas, such as restaurants and hotels and spa resorts, as well as for gardens and patios. The burner is filled with highly absorbent ceramic fibres that keep the fuel inside even when the product is pushed over. It weighs only 26 kilograms and can be transported conveniently.

Wholesome, appetising … and delicious desserts

One of the misconceptions about vegetarian restaurants is that they are, essentially, for vegetarians – and vegans. The reality is that, while many people might still enjoy steak and seafood at home or when visiting other restaurants, an increasing number of diners are opting for vegetarian alternatives.

This is especially the case at Vegetalia in Los Boliches (Fuengirola), where diners have discovered that vegetarian fare isn’t just about raw carrots, lettuce leaves and lentil burgers – or plain omelettes. It can be just as nourishing and flavoursome as any other cuisine.

Katja Gilan, who moved to the Coast with her family from Finland in the mid1980s, opened Vegetalia in 1997 after noting the absence of any purely vegetarian restaurant between Marbella and Málaga capital – not to mention limited vegetarian options at many of the Coast’s restaurants.

She initially expected the restaurant to appeal more to international residents and visitors accustomed to a more developed vegetarian culture back home, but the opening coincided with the outbreak of “mad cow disease”, and the restaurant quickly became a popular establishment for Spaniards seeking nutritious and creative alternatives to their customary cuisine – even if only a small percentage are actually vegetarians.

Using the freshest ingredients and avoiding food additives and artificial flavourings, their emphasis is always on taste and quality, offering ovo-lacto-vegetarian cuisine in a cosy and relaxed ambience. They also cater for vegans, celiacs, lactose intolerants and other food-allergy sufferers.

At lunchtime Vegetalia offers a self-service buffet from Monday to Saturday: €8.25 for adults and €3.50 for children under 12 years, not including drinks and desserts, consisting of a selection of salads, cold dishes, dressings, breads and four different hot dishes. Both the cold and hot dishes change daily.

Dinner, served on Friday and Saturday, is a la carte with a varied international menu including starters such as fried goat’s cheese salad, soya croquettes with sweet chilli sauce, and grilled tomato and mozzarella skewer; and main courses such as seitan cutlets with French fries or baked potato, vegetable curry, filled crepes au gratin, lentil burgers, pasta dishes and stir-fries.

In addition, they offer home-made desserts, freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, and an extensive drinks menu including organic wines and beers. Take away is also available.

La Mancha Makes Its Mark

Winemakers know what sells, or rather what does not sell. The denomination of a wine that included the words La Mancha or Valdepeñas was until comparatively recently the kiss of death, unless you were on a tapas crawl in Madrid where you would always order “un Valdepeñas”, which is really any wine that comes from La Mancha – much as one asks for “una caña’ (beer).

La Mancha is Europe’s largest wine-growing area. In the 18th century, Carlos III imposed a tax on the wine that paid for the building of the Puerta de Alcalá and the Puerta de Toledo, two of Madrid’s landmarks. When the railway line linking Madrid to the region was completed in 1861, the “tren de vino” hauled 20 wagons to the capital every day.

Wines from this area are now more likely to be referred to as coming from Castilla, and the change of reference has fortuitously gone hand-in-hand with a huge improvement in quality. Just as other Spanish wine-producing zones that were rated poorly have, using modern technology, made the leap into the quality rankings, so has La Mancha become acceptable.

But there is one wine that is even more exceptional than the rest and, to prove it, it even has its own classification. This is Finca Elez, home to the Manuel Man-

zaneque brand, and classified as a Grandes Pagos de Castilla. It is planted with Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay, alongside the native Tempranillo.

When Manuel Manzaneque, ex-theatre director and producer, came home to his native La Mancha region to make wine, the area he chose for his 40-hectare vineyard was El Bonillo. The first vintage was in 1992, and straight away it was obvious that some great wines were going to come out of this bodega.

Nor does it cost a fortune to drink these unexpectedly fine wines. The young Chardonnay costs only €5.50 and the excellent Finca Elez Crianza 2006, €9.50.

The Selección 2005 (€15.50) and the Syrah 2006 (€17.50) are both outstanding wines by any measure, and if you can splash out on the Escena 2006 (€30) you will not regret it.

Manuel Jr. is now in charge of things, having undergone extensive training in France and at various national wineries, and there is little doubt that, although these wines are not in every store, time spent searching them out is time well spent.

A new study has found that women between the ages of 50 and 74 who walk several days a week may have a significantly lower risk for breast cancer. Researchers looked at 73,615 postmenopausal women. All the women were recruited for the study back in 19921993 and tracked by researchers in terms of their exercise habits.

The researchers found that women who engaged in at least an hour of vigorous physical activity every day had a 25 per cent lower risk for breast cancer. The study also showed that those women who walked for at least seven hours a week had a 14 per cent lower risk for breast cancer.

“We examined whether recreational physical activity, specifically walking, was associated with lower breast cancer risk. Given that more than 60 per cent of women report some daily walking, promoting walking as a healthy leisure-time activity could be an effective strategy for increasing physical activity among postmenopausal women,” said Alpa Patel, who is an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta (Georgia). “We were pleased to find that, without any other recreational activity, just walking an average of one hour per day was associated with lower risk of breast cancer in these women.”

This is the first study to show a lower risk for breast cancer specifically with walking among women ages 50 to 74. The current guidelines recommend that adults should strive for a least two and a half hours a week of moderate-intensity activity. Patel said this study suggests that higher levels of activity may provide greater benefits for breast cancer prevention in women over the age of 50.

Adding Nuts to Your Diet May Have Hidden Health Benefits

It’s time to starting acting a little nutty. A new study shows that just eating a handful of nuts daily may help you live a longer and possibly healthier life. In the largest study of its kind, people who ate a daily handful of nuts were found to be 20 per cent less likely to die from any cause over a 30-year period than those who did not consume nuts. The study also contains further good news. It found that the regular nut-eaters were more slender than those who didn’t eat nuts.

The report looked at the protective effect on specific causes of death. It was conducted by scientists from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard School of Public Health. “The most obvious benefit was a reduction of 29 per cent in deaths from heart disease,” said senior author Dr. Charles Fuchs, who is with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston (Massachusetts). “But we also saw a significant reduction, 11 per cent, in the risk of dying from cancer.”

Whether any specific type or types of nuts were crucial to the protective effect could not be determined. However, the reduction in mortality was similar both for peanuts and for tree nuts, including walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, macadamias, pecans, pistachios and pine nuts.

The new study findings are based on data from more than 110,000 men and women who filled out detailed food questionnaires and were followed for approximately 30 years. Several previous studies have found an association between increasing nut consumption and a lower risk of diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, gallstones, and diverticulitis.

Rediscovery of Duffy’s Iconic Bowie Images Brian Duffy is, together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan, recognised as one of the photographers who helped create the “Swinging London” of the 1960s. Dubbed the “Terrible Three” by the British press, they redefined both fashion photography and the place of photographers within the industry and the culture of high fashion and celebrity chic. They socialised with royalty, musicians and actors, becoming celebrities in their own right.

“Before 1960,” Duffy once recalled, “a fashion photographer was tall, thin and camp. But we three are different: short, fat and heterosexual.”

Philippe Garner, international head of photography at Christies, remembers Duffy, who died in 2010, as being “an anarchic, abrasive, provocative young talent in ‘60s London, who precisely sensed the seismic shifts in British culture that could allow him to invent himself as one of the most successful of a new breed of fashionable photographers.”

Duffy went on to have a 10-year working relationship with David Bowie, shooting five key sessions over this period and becoming the creative force behind

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is celebrating Yoko Ono’s 80th birthday (in 2013) with a retrospective that highlights the avant-garde artist’s contemporary art, music and experimental film works.

Running from 14 March to 1 September, the exhibition includes nearly 200 pieces throughout the entire third-floor of the museum. Visitors will discover more than five decades of creativity, from the mid-1950s to the present, in the multi-faceted artistic universe of Yoko Ono. The most comprehensive exhibition devoted to Henri Matisse’s paper cut-outs, this major exhibition at Tate Modern brings together around 120 works. Many will be seen together for the first time, in what has been described as a groundbreaking reassessment of Matisse’s colourful and innovative final works.

Matisse’s first cut-outs were made between 1943 and 1947 and were collected together in Jazz 1947 (Pompidou, Paris). Other major cut-outs in the exhibition include Tate’s The Snail 1953, its sister work Memory of Oceania 1953 (MoMA, New York) and Large Composition with Masks 1953 (National Gallery of Art, Washington). The show will include the largest number of Matisse’s Blue Nudes ever exhibited together, including the most significant of the group, Blue Nude I 1952 (Beyeler Foundation, Basel).

New Album Releases

Kylie Minogue – Kiss Me Once

Having split with her manager of 25 years and signed a new deal with Roc Nation, “Kiss Me Once” – Kylie’s 12th album – was mooted as a departure from her staple diet of radio-friendly electropop. As if to prove the point, there were early rumours that the album’s lead single would feature rapper Brooke Candy, while collaborations with fellow Voice mentor Will.i.am were also said to be in the offing. Thankfully, neither of these have come to fruition. In fact, “Kiss Me Once” acts as more of a hybrid of Kylie’s recent albums, particularly the exuberance of 2010’s “Aphrodite” and the harder-edged electro of 2007’s “X”. It’s a blast of day-glo dance, of-the-moment collaborations, a lesson on how to be sexy and still polite – oh, and a bit of Enrique Iglesias, too Kaiser Chiefs – Education, Education & War

Due to be released on 31 March, “Education, Education, Education & War” is Kaiser Chiefs’ first album since the departure of principal songwriter Nick Hodgson. Although it was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, “in a weird way… I think it’s solidified how British we are”, singer Ricky Wilson said in a press release. The record gets most of its title from a 2005 speech from Tony Blair, in which the then-prime minister called education “the key to the door of Britain’s future success”. Handily the new album is coming out just as frontman Ricky Wilson is on Saturday night screens as a judge on BBC One’s “The Voice”. A shrewd move to sell more records if you ask me, and why not?

Pharell Williams – G I R L

In a statement, the singer-producer said that he wanted the album to feel “festive and urgent”. No word yet on which tracks will be included in the album, but expect to hear lead single “Happy” a lot over the next few months. The Oscar-nominated song, first featured on the soundtrack to “Despicable Me 2”, has reached number one in more than 75 countries. It’s still unclear, however, how much rapping Pharrell will do on “G I R L”. Late last year, the producer said his next album would be rap-free, saying, “That’s the difference between 30 and 40. ‘Cause I was 30, now I’m 40 – and I’m not rapping.” One week later, he said, “There was a misunderstanding. There’s just things that I just can’t talk about at the moment that won’t have any rap in it. But I will be rapping.”

Despite being one of the most prolific producers in music, G I R L will be Pharrell’s first album in eight years. “In My Mind”, released in 2006, peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, but received mixed reviews.

of the housing market, particularly as house prices rose around 6.9 per cent last year.

The growing consumer confidence was seen in the growth of credit card borrowing and personal loans. At last it also appears that lending to SMEs increased during the last quarter, hopefully reflecting improved lending conditions for 2014.

Mr. Carney provided a further insight into his forward guidance and confirmed interest rates will not be “adjusted” solely by using unemployment as the factor. That is good news for the Bank of England as the unemployment rate continues to drop and is expected to record around seven per cent with the latest numbers.

Whilst the recovery is on line, Mr Carney wants to make sure that it is not taken for granted and, of course, again the interest rate was held at its present low level.

With another month of satisfactory PMIs (purchasing managers indices) house building and commercial construction meant construction was the star turn, recording its highest level since August 2007.

The next big step on the recovery path will be linked to the budget due in March, and what additional cuts will be required, although in fairness most tax increases have already been implemented.

Ongoing Focus on European Banks

This issue we start with news from across the water, and I am delighted to say a crisis has been averted. The US congress finally agreed to raise the debt ceiling until March 2015, which means the US will not default on its debt. Raising the ceiling is the only way at present that the US government can pay its debts. This issue has been around for about three years, and in the past had created a considerable amount of uncertainty in global markets. However, and without much fuss, on this occasion both parties managed to agree on the way forward. I guess it’s something to do with the mid-term elections later this year.

With Ben Bernanke chairing his last meeting of the Federal Reserve, an additional $10 billion was cut from the QE programme in place. His successor, Janet Yellen, has suggested things will remain steady as she is likely to follow the course already plotted, so you can also expect interest rates to remain low for some time.

The housing market continues to expand, with prices increasing around 0.9 per cent month on month fuelled by improving consumer confidence. With the economy around 6.5 per cent bigger than before the crisis began it’s no wonder the Americans are feeling quietly confident.

Growing Confidence in the UK

The UK continues its path to recovery as it registered its best result for some time and grew by 1.9 per cent. That solid growth was seen across most sectors.

However, it is the services sector that takes the gold medal. Bank of England governor Mark Carney has also suggested the economy will grow at around 3.4 per cent in 2014 so confidence within the central bank remains high.

Mortgage approvals also hit a high of 71,600 in December. That’s up about 29 per cent on the year and contributes to some worries about the possible overheating

Across the euro zone, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi continues to face a difficult task, as falling inflation is still around. Prices across the zone continue to fall and stay well below the ECB’s target of two per cent. Unemployment remains a considerable issue as it stands at around 12 per cent. However, with interest rates at 0.25 per cent it’s not easy to cut again.

Going forward, another big task for the ECB head is galvanising banks to focus on creating the banking union and creating the urgency for a common pot of money to be used for bailing out banks. Mr. Draghi wants to see a five-year plan and not, as proposed, take 10 years for it to be resolved.

In mid-February there was better news for the eurozone, with the last quarter of 2013 recording 0.3 per cent growth. Better than expected growth from Germany, France and the Netherlands was supported by growth in Austria, Belgium, Spain and Italy, which all helped boost confidence. Downsides still remain in Greece, and Finland joins the “sick” list. However, the hope is that 2014 will see a continued composite figure.

Since the turn of the year, however, a different threat has emerged to the global recovery – and, of course, the eurozone – as the emerging markets now account for a higher slice of global output, so any impact becomes greater. We are not expecting to see a similar situation to the 1990s, however. We all know what complacency can bring.
