With Vergola, creating that perfect environment is as simple as the touch of a button. An indoor-outdoor area which is cool, comfortable and has a lovely open feel — and all at your finger tips. The award winning Vergola allows you to maximise the use of your outdoor areas by enabling you to choose and control the amount of sunlight and shade to suit your purposes. Additionally, the Vergola also provides rain protection and the unique interlocking louvres will automatically close at the first sign of rain. It is also tested to resist cyclonic conditions. The Vergola System is widely used in residential applications as a protective cover for outdoor areas including decks, patios, terraces, balconies, car ports and swimming pools. In commercial applications the Vergola System is the perfect choice for providing protected and ventilated outdoor areas in restaurants, bars and cafes, hotels, golf and tennis clubs, theme parks and resorts. Direct Auctions, the first property Auction House to become successful in Spain, offers a direct alternative to buying and selling property — where service and professionalism would ensure clients on both sides would benefit from the lowest sales fees in Spain with the knowledge that all properties are pre-conveyed. Since their launch in 2003, Direct Auctions have conducted over 70 successful auctions in Marbella and overseas. In 2006 they held several overseas auctions from London Earls Court, Olympia through to Birmingham and Dublin, as well as in Marbella. They were featured in the Trevor McDonald Tonight Show in 2007, a show which portrayed the real issues, prospects and future view of the Costa del Sol’s property market, and in 2008 two auctions were filmed for ITV’s “Spain: Paradise Lost”. 2009 Warrick Wincup saw Direct Auctions begin their expansion plans with director- Managing Director & Auctioneer ships and auctions held in the Marbella West and Murcia areas, and Alicante and Mijas Costa in the first quarter of 2010. Direct Auctions are continuing to expand, with further plans to hold auctions throughout Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Cyprus, Dubai, Cape Verde, UK, USA and Bulgaria — all in response to customer requests. Properties for auction can be viewed in their catalogues and as a current average, 25 to 30% of properties in each catalogue have been sold before the next auction. > BoConcept: A modern chesterfield
If the word ‘chesterfield’ makes you think of something old-fashioned and dusty – think again! BoConcept is now introducing a modern, casual-looking sofa - Milos - which is playing with the effect of check pattern and stitches. The Milos sofa is, at the same time, both soft-looking and tight in its expression, and the light legs add to the modern touch. The new Milos sofa is thought out in every detail. It gives you the freedom of making different sofas from the same units. The sofa concept itself is very manageable and consists of 13 different modules, which can be combined in many different ways. The modules are fully upholstered and the armrest has the same angle as the back, so wherever you sit will be comfortable. The ottomans, which come in two different sizes, make it possible to create a very flexible solution, so the sofa can be adjusted to the occasion. Try and connect the sofa and the ottoman to create a lounging unit, or use the ottoman free-standing to create seating capacity for even more people. BoConcept offers the Milos sofa in a broad variety of leathers and fabrics, so no matter what your style is, you will be able to find a suitable colour and material. It’s worth noticing, however, that the Milos sofa is especially beautiful covered in leather, where the distinctive stitches stand out even more. Spice up the sleek look of the sofa by adding your own favourite cushions – in a matching or contrasting colour. The Milos sofa is available in all BoConcept Brand Stores. Nimrod Messeg
Israeli artist, Nimrod Messeg, recently exhibited his iron sculptures at the El Campanario Golf and Country House. Nimrod was born in Israel, the son of a renowed painter and Sabina – a well-respected poet. Having spent his childhood years in Israel surrounded by artistic influences, it is no surprise that Nimrod was carving his own wood and stone sculptures at the age of 12. He began designing metal furniture in 1992, and moved to Marbella in 1998 where he set up a workshop for metal design, specialising in forged iron items. It was here that Nimrod began producing his iron sculptures using largely traditional forging methods, with the majority of the work being hand-forged. His works of art merge sensuality, strength and technical mastery.

Got a very big family? Or just want the flexibility to extend your dining table to fit a dinner party of up to 18 persons? This is not a problem with the new extendable dining table from BoConcept. Due to the built-in extension leaves and the extra leaves to mount at the ends, this will do the job of serving up to 18 persons. The table is available in white lacquer, walnut veneer and black-stained oak veneer. If you want a cool and contemporary look, go for the new Cavona chair. This acrylic dining chair gives you plenty of colour options when combining the base and the legs. The base shell is available in black, white and transparent orange, while the legs can be found in brushed steel, chrome, black and orange lacquered. Combine the different surfaces and colours to create a very dynamic look. But of course you decide how ‘wild’ you want to go! CATCH THE SPRING CLEANING BUG AND GET READY FOR THE SMOLDERING, RAPIDLY APPROACHING SUMMER. .Photo: FLOR VALENTIN

APRIL MAY
There is something about spring that makes people want to de-clutter, clean and spruce up their homes. Spring might even feel more like a new beginning than the new year does for some. For those of us who catch more allergies in spring than cleaning bugs, Costa del Sol Home & Lifestyle magazine has rounded up some springtime inspiration to help us all along. OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW Spring is a great time to go through every inch of your home and get rid of anything and everything that you haven’t used in a year. Donate clothes that don’t fit, toys your kids have outgrown, books you will never read again, and anything that hasn’t been used during the past year. We have a tendencyto get so used to having some things around that we almost don’t see them anymore. Now is a good time to think about how you live in your home and what you actually use. SPRING CLEANING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR Cleaning and clearing inside the house requires military-like action. Enlist the whole family to spruce up, clear out, and reevaluate how you will be living in your home over the warmer months of the year. Pick a room to start in and do not leave that room until you are finished. Bring garbage bags, a couple of boxes, and all of your cleaning products into the room with you before you start. As you are cleaning, go through things to donate (box), things to throw away (garbage bag) and things to put somewhere else in the house (box). Be ruthless! Don’t keep anything that isn’t beautiful, useful, or loved. You can also turn your clutter into cash by having a stall at the rastro and use the money to buy something fun for spring, like new plants or outdoor equipment. REPLACE AND RENEW It is also time to replace the filters and change the batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Clear and rearrange the closets so that your warmer clothes, shoes, and accessories are easily reached. Pack away the coats and box up the winter boots to make room for the flip-flops and swimsuits. Get rid of anything that you haven’t worn in a year. Clean out your refrigerator and pantry and stock up on light snacks that are within easy reach. LIGHTEN AND BRIGHTEN For springtime décor, you can swap out dark throw pillows with lighter ones, or slip on a slipcover to brighten up your living room. Remove heavy rugs and “live in the bare” during the warmer months of the year. Pull out your shells from vacations past and pair them with some white candles to make a gorgeous tablescape for your coffee or dining room tables. One new picture or accessory can change the whole house with a domino effect. OUTSIDE THE HOUSE Getting ready for spring includes the outdoor living spaces as well. Schedule a family garage clean-out to get sports equipment, pool supplies and gardening tools organised so you have nothing in the way of springtime fun. Clean or replace outdoor furniture and, while you are at it, set up a beautiful outdoor dining space to enjoy meals with the family al fresco. While you are at it, scrub down the grill for those backyard barbques with the >>

Make your pots and containers ready for the flowers and plants of Spring and Summer.
SPRING TO-DO LIST • Vacuum mattresses with the hose on your vacuum cleaner. This will suck up those nasty dust mites that make you sneeze. Also, vacuum under the beds. • Change the batteries in your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and the air filters in all of the rooms. • Clean all of the baseboards and decorative moldings. • Vacuum draperies and rugs or take them outside for a good shake. Take them to the cleaners if they are in need of a professional cleaning. • Arrange a Spring inspection of your Air-conditioning units to make sure it is ready for Summer. • Remove dead Winter foliage and replace with pretty Spring plants. Check outdoor furniture for repairs or painting. • Clean fan blades, light fixtures, and wall hangings. • Don’t forget to clean out your refrigerator and freezer. Vacuum behind and underneath. A simple change like swapping out dark pillows for lighter and brighter ones seems to bring a little springtime sunshine into your home

HOME DÉCOR > neighbours and friends. It is also a good time to remove the Winter-looking haze from the windows, both inside and out, with a good cleaning. FRESHEN OR FIX IT UP Walk around the grounds of your house and make a list of things that need fixing, replacing, or painting. Inspect the roof for damage and clean out the gutters. To keep your air conditioning running smoothly, you might want to schedule a springtime evaluation and get your Freon level checked to keep growing electric bills down. Trim the dead foliage from landscaping and replace any decrepit plants with snappy new springtime flowers. Spring is also the time to plant a vegetable or herb garden that will keep you eating fresh all Summer long. Bring in some new mulch to spruce up your flowerbeds and make sure to fertilize the lawn so that the grass is healthy and green. Spring is such a short season on the Costa del Sol and it is the perfect time to get your house ready for the long, hot summers we all know and love so much. In revamping, cleaning, and clearing out your home, a feeling of calm will more than likely take over. This is a wonderful feeling to have before we get into the lazy mindset of Summer, when cleaning is the last thing on our minds. After you have finished, buy yourself some pretty flowers, make some Sangria, sit back, and enjoy the view in your freshly spring-cleaned home. Happy Spring! H&L

COLOUR OF THE YEAR ...

APRIL MAY
Turquoise, an inviting luminous hue, is Pantone’s pick for the colour of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring a sense of well-being. “In many cultures, turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of colour,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®, “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a colour of deep compassion and healing, and a colour of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of colour word-association studies, we also find that turquoise represents an escape to many — taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.” Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island, or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, turquoise is a colour that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors,” Eiseman continues “With both warm and cool undertones, turquoise pairs nicely with any other colour in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens. Perfect for a bathroom or bedroom, turquoise is an evocative, spa-like hue that adds an undertone of warmth and excitement to any cool space. In the kitchen, turquoise adds a unique flare totabletop and appliances.”

As a nation obsessed with the outdoors, we just love relaxing outside, entertaining friends at home, and hanging out with the kids in the garden. And with this lifestyle trend has come a proliferation of outdoor furniture options to suit any taste, home style, and practical requirement. As well as the traditional timber and wrought iron we’ve all grown up with, technological advances and the use of products from the marine industry, mean outdoor furniture is now available in an array of durable, U.V.-resistant, all-weather materials. Among them, you’ll find Sunbrella® acrylic canvas, hard-wearing woven synthetic fibres, solution-dyed acrylic yarns, fast-drying Dripore™ foam that filters rather than absorbs water, and durable zips made from injection-moulded resin. Resistant to mould, mildew, sunscreen, fading, corrosion and extreme
temperatures, these materials are ideal for the manufacture of stylish, lowmaintenance outdoor furniture. But before you rush out and make that costly impulse purchase, there are a few things to consider: HOME STYLE AND EXISTING INDOOR FURNITURE When you walk through your home to your outdoor living space, the visual effect needs to be as seamless as possible. To achieve this, choose outdoor seating that complements your existing furniture in style and colour. Going from a living room full of ornate antique furniture to a patio furnished with streamlined modern sofas can be quite jarring, so aim for continuity of your décor. space you have available. If your outdoor living area consists of a small deck, go for something like the space-saving Marine Bean. Those with more room can opt for more substantial pieces that won’t be overpowered by the scale of the garden. LIFESTYLE Select furniture that will suit your lifestyle now and into the future. Consider who uses your outdoor living space and how. A dining table and matching chairs is the best option for alfresco dining, while comfortable chairs or sofas work great with a low coffee table for those who enjoy relaxing with a book or socialising with friends. If you’ll be going straight from the pool to your outdoor chairs, choose a fabric that can handle chlorinated water and sunscreen. Kids and pets can be rough on home furnishings, so go for materials and designs that will stand up to rigorous wear.
ENVIRONMENT Coastal locations are exposed to harsh conditions, including spray and saltladen winds that will corrode metal fixings and framing. When it comes to choosing metal furniture for a beach setting, stainless steel is the best option, followed closely by galvanised steel with a paint finish. If you live on a busy urban street, your outdoor furniture will be subjected to road grime and require regular cleaning, so look for something you can easily hose or wipe down. North and west-facing outdoor areas receive a lot of sunlight, and the associated U.V. rays can break down certain materials.
PRACTICALITIES If you’ll be storing your outdoor furniture in a shed or garage during winter, remember that stackable or folding pieces take up the least space. If you want or need to regularly reposition your seating, select lightweight furniture that’s easy to lift. Also, bear in mind that any damage to painted-steel framing will expose the metal to rust, which means it’s important to avoid bangs and scrapes. Whatever outdoor furniture you settle on, think beyond the approaching summer. By choosing well-constructed, hard-wearing pieces you’ll achieve the

best value for money and have furniture that will last for decades. There are a number of important details, new concepts and new products that will make the finished outdoor living area much more enjoyable. Installing grilling islands that face guest activities and include wet bars, refrigerators, warming drawers and more, make for a happy grill chef. Instead of purchasing a traditional dining set with an umbrella in the middle of the table, consider a side-mounted umbrella that can be adjusted to ward off direct sunlight and wind. These kinds of umbrellas also eliminate the visual blockage in the center of the table that traditional umbrellas create. Creative outdoor lighting will add to the outdoor experience. Pathway lighting is very important to consider, particularly when it’s a route that guests use to leave in the evening. For those who can’t do without, there are outdoor televisions and audio systems to round out an outdoor bar or entertainment center. With so many options when it comes to your outdoor area, the possibilities are endless. Whatever your style, theme or lifestyle requirements, creating the right outdoor entertaining area to suit your needs has never been easier. And with summer at our doorstep, why not entertain outdoors and bask in the glorious Costa del Sol sun. H&L

Tips for Maintaining and Protecting Outdoor Furniture
(The following applies to every type of outdoor furniture except wood.) Normal maintenance of outdoor furniture consists of washing with soap or detergents and water, or water alone with pressure jets. This is standard for all types of outdoor furniture. However, after a few months, the furniture is clean but a gray or yellow shadow remains that cannot be removed by soaps or by scrubbing. The furniture is clean but looks dirty and old. Furniture no longer shines and colours are clouded. This gray, cloudy appearance is caused by Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and oxidation. Depending on the type of cleaning required, there are three categories of products that go beyond simple soap and water cleaning. Each product is formulated for a different use as follows: Oxidation Cleaner; UV, Mildew & Oxidation Protector and Polish. Cleaner for oxidation: The purpose of products like ArmourAll and Tropi-Clean Cleaner is to remove the stubborn gray and oxidation that is left after normal cleaning. Simply spray on, wait for the liquid to melt away the gray or yellow, and then rinse off with water or wipe clean, depending on the product used. UV & Mildew Protector: This group of products contains anti-mildew and UV light inhibitors and acts like a sunscreen. Cleaning eventually removes this sunscreen so it needs to be re-applied occasionally. After spraying onto the furniture, spread the Protector so it covers all parts of the frames, fabric and/or straps. Do not rinse off. Allow it to dry on the furniture. The Protector acts as a barrier to slow down oxidation of frame finish and straps. This means that the colours remain bright and shiny and will not fade or become cloudy. A good protector normally lasts through 3-4 cleanings. Liquid Polish: Polish serves two purposes that are different from Oxidation Cleaners & Protectors. Polish is not for use as a Cleaner. Polish leaves a shiny finish over new or newly cleaned furniture. This wax layer acts like an extra barrier against dust, scuff marks, oily lotions and air pollution. Dirt and oils are more easily washed off, before they penetrate to the furniture. Liquid polish contains a very fine powder to help scrub off some of those hard-to-remove marks without scratching the furniture like Jiff or other abrasive cleaners. Furniture stays clean longer because of the liquid polish layer.
This new Equipo DRT collection, available from Cort Idea in Centro Idea, is ideal for any type of outdoor ambiance. Tempotest is a guarantee for the finish of the fabrics, giving them optimum characteristics for outdoor use. APRIL MAY

Teak
30
The Brighton and Buckingham Collection from Westminster uses only the finest TFT plantation grown teak
When left outdoors, teak will age naturally and turn a soft silvery gray. This process will take several months depending on the amount of exposure to sun and rain. For those who like this natural look, no polish or stain is needed. Your furniture will only require regular scrubbing down with soapy water and clear water rinsing, to keep it looking good. Really stubborn marks or stains can be removed by using teak cleaner. Follow with light sanding if the surface wood fibres are standing up. This is not to say that once teak has aged, it cannot be restored to its golden-brown colour. Apply teak cleaner on furniture that is moist with water. Leave to soak in for ten minutes and then brush down with a hard bristle brush. Rinse with water and allow it to dry. If you want to keep the golden-brown colour, apply teak protector once or twice a year. If you prefer the golden-brown colour of teak, we recommend you seal the teak from day one with teak protector before it starts graying. You will then need to continue to maintain it with teak protector once or twice a year. It’s easy; just apply it with a brush to a surface that is clean and dry. Allow the oil to soak into the wood and wipe off excess teak oil so it does not leave stains on cushions, fabrics or clothing. CARING FOR OTHER TYPES OF WOODEN FURNITURE Some outdoor furniture constructed of wood will have a light coat of marine varnish or polyurethane sealer over the wood. This furniture will require light sanding and reapplication of the finish to prevent discolouration or mildew growth on the wood. Check wooden furniture regularly for joints that are coming loose and for loose screws or bolts. Prevention may save the furniture before it becomes damaged or it can no longer be repaired.
The Shade Sail Company NOW CELEBRATING THREE YEARS IN SPAIN Since 2007 The Shade Sail Company has been installing shade systems for satisfied clients all over Andalucia in Southern Spain. Having gained experience in the Shade Sail industry whilst living in Australia, the company has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2007. Based near Marbella on the Costa del Sol, the company has taken on projects all over the province, including the main cities of Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Cadiz and Malaga, as well as the coastal region from Gibraltar to Motril. The climatic conditions in southern Spain are almost identical to many parts of Australia where Shade Sails were first introduced commercially almost 30 years ago. Shade Sails in this part of the world were virtually unknown until the arrival of The Shade Sail Company. At best we saw poor efforts of both designs and materials, but on a very limited scale. As is the case with any new product that becomes available, it is only a matter of time until other enterprises try to emulate the original supplier, and of course this is now the case here in Spain. From do-it-yourself type suppliers of Shade Sails to Custom Made suppliers and installers, all with varying levels of quality, materials, costs and experience. This is not to say that this is a bad thing, after all, competition will drive a new industry forward, as has been seen with the introduction of Glass Curtains to this part of the world over the past few years as an example. Some of the most important factors you should consider when choosing a shade sail system is the experience of the company designing and installing the project as
well as the quality of the materials used for the installation. Usually experienced installers will supply references of their previous projects and examples of their work carried out in the area. The best materials for use in shade sails are High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) which, when installed correctly, will allow a cooling breeze to flow through the material and is also extremely tough. Quality of materials is usually gauged on the weight per square metre and ranges from 230 grams per square metre to anything up to 400 grams per square metre. For larger sails over 40 square metres, a commercial type material over 300 gsm should be used. Since 2009, The Shade Sail Company has been using a new Monofilament HDPE, which is extremely tough and, unlike some materials, will not stretch over time. The material is also self-cleaning and comes with a ten year under-tension warranty. This reduces the maintenance costs of any project; however, periodical checks should still be carried out on fixtures and fittings. The Shade Sail Company is committed to providing shade solutions for open spaces. Our friendly, professional and prompt service can design and install shade structures that will enhance your property and protect you from the sun. To see samples of our sails and a full photographic portfolio of examples of shade sails for play areas, or to arrange an obligation free design consultation, please see the contact page on our website www.theshadesailcompany.com for further information, or call us on 952 930 959.

Cool Pools Get the Look SWIMMING POOLS AND SPAS ARE A GREAT WAY TO COOL
OFF AND BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT. THIS GUIDE TO TRENDS AND POOL DESIGN IS PACKED WITH TIPS TO HELP YOU NARROW DOWN A MYRIAD OF CHOICES — SO, DIP YOUR TOE IN AND SEE WHAT’S COOL. Athough swimming pool trends come and go (remember the diving board and the slide...) industry insiders are confident that some of today’s most popular pool must-haves will be around for years to come. Pool innovations that are slated to withstand the test of time include negative edges, beach entries, sun shelves, waterfalls, fiber optic lighting, built-in spas and bars and landscaping that provides a natural backdrop for the pool area. Another growing trend that’s here to stay, especially in Andalucia, is the integration of pools into the home’s design enabling a seamless transition from internal living spaces to the water. By far the most luxurious look is the dramatic infinity edge swimming pool which features a ‘wet edge’. Architect John Lautner designed the first negative edge pool in the 1950’s. However, the design truly gained widespread popularity in the 1990’s. Negative edge pools, also called vanishing or infinity edge pools, create the illusion of the end of the pool blending seamlessly with the landscape around it. A trough is created on the outside wall of a swimming pool, allowing the water in the pool to slip effortlessly over the side of the pool at one or more edges, creating an undisturbed horizontal plain. This movement of the water creates an optical illusion that joins the pool with whatever landscape lays beyond

it. Typically, these edges work best when teamed with a striking backdrop such as the Meditterean or expanse of unbroken skyline. Other trends include plunge pools, lap pools around the home, living areas built around the pool, tropical and resort-inspired spas, retractable decks, and part of the pool flowing into the home. According to the ASPS, some of the most popular ideas in pools now involve the lack of pool walls — most notably playful and pretty beach entries, shallow and comfortable wet decks and shallow lounging areas. These areas are great for families with small children and for those who want to incorporate a shallow lounging area, sun shelf or play area into their pool design. Sun shelves are flat areas set inside the pool at depths of 10 to 20 centimetres. Lounge chairs can be placed on these shelves so that sunbathers can stay cool as they soak up the rays or keep an eye on the kids in the pool. For those who prefer to stay out of the sun, brackets can be mounted in the pool walls to hold sun umbrellas. Tile colour options are bountiful. Crystal and sapphire blue hues go hand in hand with the streamlined lap pools and geometric shapes currently in vogue. Dark blue is another shade frequently requested but it tends to be a little pricey. Darker colours >>
< OUTDOOR LIVING << The Freeform Pool
A freeform pool is generally built to imitate a natural lagoon pool or small oasis. It will have a natural, uneven shape, and will often have features around it like rocks and waterfalls to compliment the naturalistic style. Many have a sloped beach-like entrance, which is also nice for having a quick dip. This pool is more for cooling-off in and relaxing, However, depending on its size, this pool can offer most facilities the pool owner is looking for, if it is adapted at the design stage. It is best to consult a pool professional to get insight into the different options available with this design.
<< The Play Pool
Photo ATLAS POOL
Play pools are an option for people who wish to cool off and relax, but can also be built for water sports and for laps. It is generally a good option for families with children. A play pool is quite shallow (typically no deeper than five feet). Play pools can have a fun design and are often created in different shapes. Common shapes are kidney-shaped pools; however, the shape can be anything the pool owner desires.
The Geometric Pool
A geometric pool has even lines and features. Usually built in a rectangular shape, this pool is considered the “traditional swimming pool” style. A geometric pool can be built to look modern and up-market, making it also a design feature in your garden.

Current Pool Trends Shape:
Lagoons are out, traditional or geometric shapes are in.
Surface:
Pebble Tec (pebble-like finish), Pebble Sheen (sparkly finish) and upgraded white plaster are all popular pool surfaces.
Lighting:
Simple wall lights are no longer enough. Fibre optics and coloured lights head the lighting list. Laminar with colours wheels is becoming increasingly popular.
Entrance:
Some of the most popular ideas in pools now involve the lack of pool walls — most notably playful and pretty beach entries, shallow and comfortable wet decks and dramatic vanishing edges are all gaining popularity.
Decorations: Fountains and waterfalls remain popular and are growing increasingly huge in conjunction with pools. Fire:
Adding fire features around pools, whether they are fireplaces, fire pits, barbecues or grills.
Furniture:
Pool furniture is making a sculptural statement, such as organically-shaped couches and beds for added impact
Automation products: Controls, remotes, covers, lights, etc., are becoming more commonplace on pools at all levels. CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

are also prone to getting warmer in summer, creating a lukewarm swimming experience. Water features are a huge trend in pools at the moment and can vary from an inconspicuous trickle to an imposing wall of water. The soothing sight and sound of moving water in a waterfall feature creates a sanctuary feel, while lively fountain elements can imbue the space with a playful ambiance. Incorporating a spa with a spillover feature into the design of a swimming pool is now obligatory and new water feature trends include foaming fountains that mix water with air to create the foam and animated fountains that either turn on when someone walks by a motion detector, or that are connected to a sound system and programmed ‘dance’ along to the music. If you’ve just installed a new pool you won’t want its use to be confined to daylight hours. Creative use of lighting can help illuminate a pool’s features, making it even more striking by night. The subtle placement of low voltage lights around the pool is replacing the traditional use of a single, high voltage spot light. LED >>
Lap Pools
These pools are popular for those who enjoy exercising in water. Lap Pools can come with resistance built in so that swimmers can control the level of their workout. Therefore they tend to be long and narrow, usually over fifty feet long. Photo ATLAS POOL
Landscape Tips for Small Pools • Have a master plan that reflects the style of your home and your own lifestyle. • One you’ve chosen a look or theme (such as tropical or minimalist), stick with it. • Be mindful of trees. A large canopy of trees will block your sunlight. • Use landscaping to frame your pool. • Soften the hardscape (concrete spaces) with planted areas. Scatter them about to add interest and multiple focal points. • Use native plants – they are hardy, pest-resistant and easy to grow. • When planting, have a ratio of 75 percent foliage plants and 25 percent bloomers. • Anything that blooms is going to attract insects, so use blooming plants sparingly around your pool for spots of colour. Rely on variegated plants for texture and visual interest. • Think of your plants in terms of structure. Create privacy walls with grasses. Camouflage fences with climbing plants. Use sod to create comfortable walking surfaces. Plants can be practical as well as pretty. • Use raised planter boxes to create height and visual interest. Stagger them for even more variety
Negative Edge or Infinity Pools
These pools are designed so to create the appearance that the end of the pool is vanishing. An infinity pool is typically built facing an amazing view. This allows the edge of the pool to seamlessly blend with the view. The pool water overflows, is collected and recirculated into the pool. Fresh and modern, it is a design feature for most homes.

• Put your plants in low-maintenance, durable faux clay pots and planters. And combination benches/ planter boxes are a quick, easy and relatively inexpensive way to add colour, depth and extra seating to your pool area.

The SPool
The word ‘spool’ is comprised of the two words: spa and pool. The spool is a smaller pool, more commonly seen as a large spa. Spools are often around 12 to 14 feet squared. This is a nice option for someone with a smaller garden who is looking for a pool to relax in. This pool can offer therapeutic relief and relaxation, in a relatively smaller space than a regular pool. The Perimeter Overflow Pool
This stylish pool is created by having the pool surface’s water level at the same level as the surround of the pool. Decking is usually the option for the pool surround in this style, and the water of the pool drains into a notched perimeter around the pool, this overflowing water leaves a lovely visual impression. This up-market style is quickly becoming popular, as it adds grace and style to any garden.
Lighting >>
Highlight pleasing features in the garden and on your home. The right lighting can make your outdoor living area magical. Consider uplighting on trees and architectural elements, pathway lighting in planters and to mark hazards, and mercury vapour lighting up high for a soft, moonlit effect. Also, there’s dramatic fibre optic lighting to outline the perimetre of your pool and spa.

lighting is yet another new system that offers a vast array of colour options, with both fixed colour and colour-changing lights. Their control units allow you to pre-program a theme-based light show that will automatically cycle through a kaleidoscope of colours. Using your remote, you can either lock in a colour choice or program the system to continuously change through the full range of options. More ambitious features allow you to co-ordinate the light show with a favourite musical soundtrack. Fibre Optic lighting installed in conjunction with fountains are now providing another option for night-time pool lighting and allow you to change light colours at whim, thus creating an ambiance for every mood. In addition, the creative use of lighting can be used to pick out architectural features such as fountains or water features at night, helping them to look as striking at night as they do by day. For decades, swim-up bars located in a portion of the pool have enabled hosts to entertain their guests without leaving the pool area. These bar areas are now being expanded to include outdoor kitchens or brick ovens built into the portion of the sunken bar area that connects to the swim up bar. Gas grills and plasma televisions complete these spaces and transform them into complete hospitality areas. One of the most exciting trends in swimming pools is that current technology is being used to bring ease of operation and maintenance to pool owners in the form of wireless control panels and units. Simple menus enable pool owners to easily create and change programs that will control their pool, spa, lighting and water feature designs with one touch and from anywhere on the property. With all the new trends in swimming pools and spas available to homeowners today, there’s no reason why your outdoor living space shouldn’t reflect either your personality or the design theme you’ve chosen for your home. By splashing out on a few of these new features, your outdoor entertaining environment will be as unique as it is cutting-edge. H&L

WHILE WINDOW DRESSINGS MAY ONCE HAVE JUST BEEN A WAY TO ADD A STYLISH FINISHING TOUCH, OR INJECT SOME PRIVACY INTO AN INTERIOR DESIGN SCHEME, THESE DAYS, SELECTING THE RIGHT PRODUCT CAN DO A WHOLE LOT MORE. A recent study by the European Solar-Shading Organisation (ES-SO) calculated that if sun-protective shutters and blinds were adopted in buildings throughout the EU, a potential 31 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions could be saved in heating energy requirements. The potential savings in cooling energy were even more staggering: the study calculated that the right window dressings could lead to an annual reduction in EU carbon dioxide emissions of 80 million tonnes. On the Costa del Sol, where the baking sun streams through the windows causing us to crank up the air con, the need to employ eco-friendly solutions is particularly pressing. SHADY BUSINESS Hunter Douglas have developed an integrated system for energy saving in commercial interiors by using solar shading. Enduris Glass Core technology contributes to sustainable design by protecting interiors from solar heat, diffusing incoming natural light, enhancing interior comfort and so increasing occupant productivity. The product uses internal blinds which have been tested to eliminate up to 64% of heat from solar radiation. The result is that you get a more pleasant indoor environment, with temperatures reduced by as much as 5 to 15°C, contributing to energy savings such as cooling load reductions of 40 to 60%. The screen fabrics also provide excellent protection against UV radiation. All shades made with these fabrics offer excellent aesthetics, the highest strength and durability to maintain those looks, and performance characteristics that contribute to a healthier, more sustainable indoor environment. If the right materials are chosen, simple blinds can drastically lower energy usage. German company Verotex has spent the past 20 years developing a range of fabrics for use in blinds made from a highly innovative, eco-friendly coating, which reflects up to 88% of light coming through the window. Window dressing company Luxaflex also offers energy saving blinds and fabrics. Sustainability has become more and more important and silhouette shades – one of Luxaflex’s products – is made of a strong but light polyester fabric that doesn’t fade or tear, combining the best features of curtains and blinds in one unique design.
ECO CURTAINS They may not have the technical capacity of blinds and shutters, but if you are going to go for curtains as a window dressing, fabrics can also be very eco-friendly. Drapilux, for example, has developed a range of intelligent textiles for its window dressings. Drapilux has always been interested in the topic

of the environment and has been implementing environmentally-friendly production techniques for many years, which are certified annually by Oeko Tex (an international testing and certification system for textiles which limits the use of certain chemicals during production). Drapilux takes care to recycle waste materials and use recyclable packaging. The additional functions of Drapilux decorative fabrics contribute just as much to environmental protection: Drapilux Bioaktiv reduces the washing frequency of curtain and net curtain fabrics. Less detergents and water are required. Moreover, Drapilux is a member of ‘Future e.V.’ which campaigns for the development of environmentally-oriented products and services.

TALKING TECHNO As well as being at the cutting-edge of eco-friendly design, the latest innovations for window dressings allow you to precisely control the brightness of the light filtering into the room, close the curtains at a touch of a button, and make difficult to reach windows a snap to operate. Blinds are the most advanced window dressing in terms of technical capabilities. The amount of light coming into the room, as well as the direction of the light, can be precisely controlled by tilting the louvers, slats, vanes or panels. A blind is a natural and artificial light controller. We have three main reasons behind wanting natural/artificial light control in a commercial space. The first is comfort; you can reduce the glare and contrast in the workplace, which comes from direct or diffused sunlight. The second is energy saving, and the third is about controlling internal artificial light, which can cause night light pollution. This is the excessive amount of artificial light that comes out of buildings at night and reflects onto the street and surrounding buildings. One of Somfy’s latest products is called Sonesses – a new range of ‘silent’ tubular motors for all types of roller shades. The motors come in different sizes and can be used for sunscreens, roman shades, cord-lift shades, and roller black out blinds. Less than 44 decibels, which means that if you are one metre away from the blind you won’t hear the motor operating. Another innovation from Somfy is a range of ‘silent’ motorised curtain track systems called ‘Glystro’. In a commercial setting, Glystro is mostly used for hotels and hotel apartments, where you can integrate it with the room automation system. In addition to being motorised and controlled automatically, the curtain can also be opened manually through a manual override system, in case the guest doesn’t realise it’s automatic. This is an important feature which limits the maintenance for the track and the fabrics. On the other hand, if the curtain gets stuck, Glystro – by the means of its over-torque detector – allows the system to declutch and switch to manual mode, preventing damage to the fabric and the components of the track.

WHAT’S IN FOR WINDOWS? As the focus increasingly shifts towards the environment and technology, billowing, poufy curtains with reams of fabric seem to be out, as designers look towards blinds and shutters for the latest innovations. But has style gone out of the window? Manufacturers say the latest trends for window dressings are sleek, contemporary and highly technical. The trend-makers for intelligent window design are coming from Europe. Roller shades, quite a retro-look for a while, have been reinvented and offer sleek designs, excellent light control and a clean, stylish look. With Luxaflex’s huge fabric collection, whether it’s elegant, tailored design, natural grass cloth or sophisticated silk-like fabric, they can create a roller shade to suit any taste. The dual roller shade option allows you to pair two fabrics of varying opacities on one cassette for optimum light control and an intriguing layered effect. Another major trend from Luxaflex is for sleek, flat, Japanese-design vertical panels made from a unique paper material called ‘washi’ (literally meaning ‘Japanese paper’). This opaque material has a cloudy finish that allows light through but obscures the view, making it perfect for privacy and sun protection. They offer combinations with white and colour washi segments. The woven washi panels and roller blinds look like bamboo but are also made from paper. Wooden or aluminum ribs and bottom bars enhance the oriental look. H&L

DESIGN
IT’S BECOMING EVER HARDER TO ESCAPE THE WORD ‘SUSTAINABLE’. FROM THE WAY WE LIvE TO THE HOMES WE LIvE IN, AN AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABILITY IS AFFECTING EvERY FACET OF DAILY LIFE. BUT WHAT DOES ‘SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR DESIGN’ MEAN?
On a basic level, sustainable design focuses on creating environments that are healthy and efficient, conserve energy, and use materials with low environmental impact. In addition, some forms of sustainable design consider the materials used in a project from a ‘cradle to cradle’ concept rather than ‘cradle-to-grave’. In essence, this means that the materials used will not end up in landfills, but will be recycled or reused at the end of their life-cycle. Let’s break down sustainable interior design and what it means for your next remodeling project.
PAINT AND FINISHES According to the EPA, indoor air quality is three times more polluted than outdoor air. Two of the leading culprits: paint and finishes. To create a healthier home environment, green interior designers turn to low or zeroVOC paints and finishes. Until recently, paints contained high levels of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) to improve durability and performance. But today’s water-based products with low levels of VOCs give off no odor once cured, reduce indoor toxins, are not considered hazardous waste, and are as durable as their less earthfriendly counterparts.
FLOORING In addition to using less toxic paints and fi nishes, green designers look for sustainable materials. When considering flooring, there are several sustainable options. For wood floors, bamboo and cork are environmentally conscious alternatives to hardwood. The problem with hardwood is that it takes between 30 to 100 years after planting a tree for it to be harvested for flooring. On the other hand, bamboo can be harvested after 5 to 7 years. A cork tree can be harvested after 25 years, and then again every 9 to 12 years without damaging the tree. If you prefer the look of hardwood, designers recommend those manufacturers who promote sustainable forestry. Although wood floors have seen a resurgence of interest, many people still prefer the feel of carpet. Look for options that contain low or zero-VOC emissions and are made with 100 percent natural materials – such as wool, cotton, linen or hemp – that are produced without using harmful pesticides. Tile provides an additional alternative and comes in many different materials from 100 percent recycled glass, to lead-free pewter and ceramic. Tile can be used for floors, bathroom showers and backsplashes.

EARTH DAY RESOLUTIONS On April 22, citizens around the globe will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Our culture’s ever-increasing involvement in the green movement is reflected in the growing awareness along the Coast — a commitment to changing wasteful habits in favour of sustainable practices. This year, consider the following Earth Day Resolutions: • Ask your kids to bring their paper and plastic lunch bags home to use again. • Change regular light bulbs for Compact Fluorescent Lights (energy savings on CFLs are 60%). • E-mail the companies that send you junk mail asking them to stop. • Keep showers to seven minutes or less. • Plant a garden or tree that can be fertilized with your kitchen compost. • Buy locally grown produce at one of Costa del Sol’s many markets. • Only run the dishwasher when it is full. • Return your coat hangers to the dry cleaner. • Pledge not to use disposable cups, water bottles or cutlery. • Switch to non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning products. • Cut old towels into washcloths and dish rags. • Ride your bike. Of course, like having a workout partner, commitments like these are made easier through strength in numbers. Talk to people close to you about what steps you can take together. “Eco-challenges” are a particularly great way to get kids involved. One Earth Day goal that most of us can benefit from is the commitment to spend more time outside – if we’re going to stay motivated we have to remember what it is we’re fighting for.
LINENS, MATTRESSES AND LIGHTING If a major remodeling project is not on the plate or in the budget, here are some budget-friendly project ideas: Consider small things such as buying new sheets made from organic fabrics produced without using harmful chemicals or pesticides. If it’s time for a new mattress, Royal Pedic’s Line of organic cotton mattresses are free of pesticides, formaldehyde, foams and other petrochemicals. And, last but not least, change out an inefficient, incandescent fixture for an energy-efficient option. It instantly updates a room and will provide energy savings for years to come. Before starting any new home project, remember the concept of ‘cradle to cradle’. Consider the full life-cycle of a material in terms of a circle that continually renews rather than a straight line whose end is a landfill.

TIPS AND TECHNIQUES TO SPARKLE YOUR HOME FOR SPRING The spring sunshine we welcome so gladly also shows us how badly the windows need to be washed. We’re inspired to have a go at the ritual of spring cleaning and we want to do it safely. If we’re readying our home to sell, we want that overall sparkle. We want it to smell fresh when potential buyers tour, but not clinical. We want people who live in our home to be healthy, not irritated by toxic cleaning chemicals.
MAKE-IT-YOURSELF IS MOST EFFECTIVE The three leading warriors in a responsible fight against grime are white vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. Vinegar can be considered an all-purpose cleaner. Mix it half and half with water in a spray bottle and you are armed to tackle most cleaning jobs. Vinegar is natural, a great deodorizer, and some authorities claim it disinfects. Your grandmother probably used it to rinse her hair before the days of conditioner. That’s because it stripped away soap residue and left a fresh fragrance. Vinegar is safe to use on most surfaces and has the added bonus of being incredibly cheap. Before you start, test the vinegar solution on an inconspicuous area of what you want to clean to find out if the surface material and colour can stand up to it. Improperly diluted vinegar can do things such as erode tile grout. Never use vinegar on marble. Here are a few suggestions for successful use: ■ Use vinegar to make your windows sparkle. ■ Use vinegar to wipe up spills on stove tops, appliances and countertops. ■ Pour a cupful of vinegar into your mob bucket to clean floors. It will eliminate water streaks and spots. ■ Use vinegar as a natural fabric softener, adding half a cup to the rinse cycle. ■ Use full-strength vinegar to clean the toilet bowl, work on soap scum or tackle hard water stains. Vinegar fights cooking odours. Simmer a tablespoon of vinegar in a cup of water while you cook garlic, onions, cabbage or anything with a strong smell. Most of the odour will be absorbed. For a variety of jobs, bring on the lemon juice. This strong food acid is part of a responsible cleaning arsenal, because it’s effective against most household bacteria. Lemon juice, mixed with a little vinegar and baking soda to make a paste, works for shining brass and copper. Polish your best hardwood furniture with a mixture of half a cup of lemon juice with one cup of olive oil. Send a whole strip of lemon peel through the garbage disposal to freshen the drain. You may have already learned the value of keeping an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator to absorb odours. But it can do more. Baking soda can clean, soften water and scour. Use it to scrub surfaces that need a bit of grit. Don’t overlook the possibilities in the cornstarch package. It’s about more than pudding. Cornstarch can be safely used to clean windows, polish furniture and shampoo carpets. For really tough jobs, you’ll want to get out the trisodium phosphate, commonly known as TSP. It’s a mixture of soda ash and phosphoric acid, and no, you don’t want to swallow it because it is toxic. But it’s safer than more toxic chemicals that are usually sold to clean drains or remove old paint, according to eartheasy.com. It also doesn’t produce fumes. Part of being eco-responsible is saying no to over packaging. Buy cleaners in containers that can be refilled whenever possible. Find the sparkle without the guilt. H&L

CUTTING-EDGE ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND STUNNING CONTEMPORARY DESIGN ARE THE KEYWORDS FOR THIS AMERICAN HOME Photo Credit: James F. Wilson Built by Las Vegas builder Blue Heron and architect Danielian Associates in collaboration with interior designer Robb & Stucky Interiors, the home rejuvenates modern single-family living that is elegant, functional, and efficient, and green. Despite its size – a nearly 9,000-square-foot estate – and it’s multimillion-dollar price tag, the house far exceeds conventional resource efficiency standards. It provides a wealth of ideas that will filter down into homes of every style, size, and price range. From a distance, both figuratively and literally, The New American Home (TNAH) 2009 appears contradictory to what’s being deemed appropriate in the current conservative housing climate: a nearly 9,000-square-foot estate with a multimillion-dollar price tag built in a market, Las Vegas, that is the poster-child for the industry’s woes. Never mind that the house sold before it was finished – albeit at a slight discount to accommodate a lease-back deal (allowing the builder, Blue Heron Properties, to use it as a model home for the 12 other lots of the new infill community in which it sits). Never mind that, despite its size, the house far exceeds conventional resource efficiency standards. It achieves a remarkable 76 percent energy-use savings, compared to the DOE’s Building America benchmark; and earning a Gold rating against the NAHB’s Green Building Program standards, thanks to a concerted combination of sustainable design concepts and building practices, and innovative, eco-friendly

devices. Never mind that the house updates and revitalizes modern style (and celebrates the return – and value – of architect-designed housing) with a contemporary desert aesthetic which is perfectly suited to its climate and buyer profile. That value is immediately evident as you turn into Agave Azul and see the house in full for the first time, and even more so once you walk up to the front door and enter. If you can put all of those accomplishments aside, then TNAH is reduced to just a big, beautiful house, reserved for a well-heeled slice of the market that enjoys casual elegance, appreciates a bit of hip Vegas nostalgia, plans to age in place, and likes to entertain—a lot. “It fits perfectly within its environment, both aesthetically and demographically,” says builder Tyler Jones. “There’s a growing market of buyers who are interested in a new, fresh style of housing.” But it is much more than that. Like every one of the 25 previous show homes in this program (co-sponsored by Builder and the NAHB’s National Council of the Housing Industry), it provides a wealth of ideas can be applied to all manner of homes. For instance, Jones employed insulated concrete forms for the home’s main structural element to improve thermal performance; meanwhile, both solar electric (including brand-new bifacial PV panels) and solar thermal power offset grid- supplied electricity. The house also sports a cool-roof system to protect against the harsh desert>>
< HOME INSPIRATION Upon entering the foyer, guests are treated to a waterwall fed by a long, shallow trough from the spa at the back of the property. The trough spans over the stairs built behind the waterwall, adding interest as people descend from the home’s main courtyard and at-grade living areas.
Sliding glass panels from Sierra Pacific pocket completely into the sidewalls to create a full 18-foot-wide opening to the outdoors. Even better, the SFI-certified pine-finished panels are operated via remote control or a wall-mounted touchpad thanks to a near silent 500 series motorization system by Doors in Motion. The 16-inch-square travertine floor tiles from Daltile extend seamlessly to the covered patio and are set at the same elevation as the zero-edge pool. The pool water, however, is kept at bay by a 1-inch-wide perimeter trough. The water level can be lowered for swimmers to mitigate splashing and overflow into the patio and large living area known as ‘the great room’. The interior designer eschewed a dining area between the kitchen and living space to create a more comfortable setting. The kitchen island satisfies casual meal needs. She also specified a C-shaped sofa in front of the fireplace instead of a section to both buck convention and balance the clean lines of the room. The horizontal lines of the front facade continue inside with a 45inch wide-angle gas fireplace from Regency’s Contemporary Collection accented by a flat eyebrow mantle finished with Egyptian-series amber-coloured mosaic glass tiles from Daltile.

HOME INSPIRATION > sun and heat, and a natural gas–powered HVAC system that has been time-tested in Japan but makes its domestic debut in this year’s show home. “We did quite a bit of work to provide a new level of sustainability for this size home,” says John Danielian, a principal with Danielian Associates Architects & Planners in Irvine, California. “Green design and building standards will soon be a requirement on every project, regardless of size.” Then there’s the layout of the home’s four levels, bookended by a below-grade entertainment area that opens to a generous courtyard, and an open-air sky deck lounge that overlooks the Las Vegas valley and the Strip. The third level (second from street view) houses a guest suite, home office suite, and extra entertainment space. >> The kitchen gains more than a bit of workspace and additional appliance capacity, thanks to a generous U-shaped prep area around the corner. That area is outfitted with a pair of sinks, a full-sized fridge with a bottom-mount freezer, and a wall-over and warming drawer, among other features. In a clever move to retain the lines of the glass-accented tile along the kitchen’s wall surfaces, electrical outlets are concealed under the upper cabinets. On the island, a pair of power strips, each with three outlets, pop up on either side of the sink. The relatively modest-sized U-shaped main kitchen puts everything within easy reach.

Facing almost due north and shielded on its west and east elevations, the master bedroom draws only cool, indirect daylight through the patio doors and fixed clerestory windows above them. The interior designer positioned the large and low-set bed in the middle of the room to give the owners a clear view of the Zen garden. The master bedroom, enjoys private access to the Zen garden equipped with a Koi pond and a trellised outdoor bed platform, through motorised telescoping all-glass patio doors that create a full, 8-foot-wide passage.

The rejuvenation room appears to float on the surface of the zero-edge pool, a scene that is not only visible from nearly every room in the house, but also one that elicits a sense of calm and quiet reflection. It also includes motorized pocket doors and is accessible from the outdoor living area and the master bedroom. The main level, however, is the most dynamic. It contains all of the essential functions – from a kitchen-dining-hobby/laundry wing, to a private enclave of bedroom suites (including the master) set across the entry foyer from the public areas. Between them is ‘the great room’, a volume space that also opens outward to the zero-edge pool and provides the primary access to a playground of outdoor spaces. In fact, on every level, there is a distinct effort and plenty of opportunities to connect with the outside. “Interior spaces either visually connect or seamlessly expand to outdoor living spaces to enhance entertainment areas and promote the luxury lifestyle,” says Joe Digrado, the lead designer for Danielian Associates. Fortunately, the home’s east-west axis allows the rear elevation to leverage a northern exposure with an abundance of glass and enables that concept to thrive. Modern design has a reputation for coming across as austere — until now. Interior designer Lee Lundquist, and her team from >>

As if a 52-inch Toshiba flat screen wasn’t enough to satisfy the owners and their guests (not to mention the trio of same-sized displays in the courtyard), the entertainment room is fitted with a theatre-quality projection screen that drops down in front of the “Flamingo” wall and a JVC projector that emerges from the ceiling. A total home automation system from Microsoft and Lifeware automatically draws shades across the sliding glass doors when the screen and projector are engaged. Low-slung, deep upholstered furniture, a dark carpet, the funky wall photo, and a full-length, mirrored bar/ kitchen set the stage for a retro lounge experience. Like the great room above it, the subterranean entertainment room features motorised sliding glass doors that pocket completely into the sidewalls, creating a seamless transition between the indoor space and a generous 22-foot by 16-foot courtyard.
Motorised louvers, controlled by a remote device, can assume any position depending on the amount of sun or shade desired. Fully closed, the louvers are watertight and they will close automatically in a rainstorm. The enclosed section of the sky deck, measuring 13-feet by 18-feet,, features a bar area (behind the return wall left of the opening) and a cosy conversation space served by a flat screen-fireplace hearth. The back and side walls feature windowless openings to enable breezes through the space.

HOME INSPIRATION > Robb & Stucky Interiors’ Las Vegas office, worked to balance the clean, straight lines and lack of ornamentation inherent in the home’s architecture. They achieved this with a comfortable, colourful, and occasionally whimsical palette of furnishings and finishes, such as the swanky, Rat-Pack–style bar in the basement and the deep, rounded, upholstered sofas on the sky deck. Not to be upstaged, landscape architect Pat Murphy and the crew from Summers/Murphy & Partners in Dana Point, California, took cues from Lundquist to create room-like experiences among the outdoor spaces within the vast rear courtyard and elsewhere. Dotted with native plantings and shade trees (particularly along the home’s west elevation), the rear courtyard sports a Zen garden; a spa; a deep, covered outdoor living space with a seating area, flat screen TV, and pool table; and a sunken outdoor kitchen and swim-up bar — not to mention the rejuvenation room that rests on top of the water. The result is a truly integrated design that is the foundation of sincere sustainability instead of fleeting fashion. “There was so much collaboration to create one cohesive vision,” says Jones of the team effort engaged for the project. “But that’s what makes it such a strong home.”
The rooftops of the bedroom wing serve as a platform for Suntrek’s solar thermal system for heating the pool water, a process of direct heat-exchange between the water and the system’s tubing. An array of 56 high-output photovoltaic panels from Sanyo Energy provide the roof finish for the outdoor living room – and offset the balance of the home’s grid-supplied electricity. The panels feature a cuttingedge bifacial design that concerts not only direct sunlight from above, but also reflected light from below to produce up to 50 percent more electricity than conventional panels.
Anchored by the pool, the courtyard affords a bevy of outdoor living opportunities, both on the main living level and on the deep balconies of the upper floors. The east-west axis of the home is ideal. Along the west elevation, L-shaped awnings are angled to the path of the afternoon sun to shade the windows on that side of the house, mostly occupied the utility spaces. Meanwhile, the northern exposure to the back enables large expanses of glass doors and windows to bring in cooler, indirect daylight and facilitate passive ventilation.

Logic3 Valve 80 Logic3 have brought a touch of class to iPods and MP3s with their surprisingly affordable Valve 80 vacuum tube amplifier and speaker combo. With killer looks and rich, fearsome sonics, music lovers can achieve an ear-blasting 80 watts of clear and undistorted sound by dropping their iPod into the Universal Dock. The amplifier has a steel body with a mirror finish, giving it a high-end feel. On top, a steel cradle dock houses the iPod, leaving exposed valve tubes and a view meter to kick out light in time to the music. And the front panel has just two switches – one for volume and the other for output selection – leaving most functions accessible via the remote control. In terms of sound quality, it sets new benchmarks; whether it’s base tones or sharp sounds. The hybrid vacuum tube amp balances out the sound of MP3 music files, and all but eliminates noise distortion, to deliver a warm harmonic sound that reaches up to 80 watts RMS. Add in speakers with a tweeter for delivering sharp and pristine notes, and Kevlar cone drivers to pack a punch, and you’ll really notice a difference in tone and richness.

We’ve recommended this before, but no list of music gadgets would be complete without what is undoubtedly the king of music gizmos the world over. Capable of storing up to 7,000 songs, 40,000 photos or 40 hours of video, the 32 gigabyte version of the iPod Touch also allows you to surf the web and access emails through its built-in Wi-Fi connection. Using Apples free iTunes software, you can browse an online music store as well as ‘rip’ your whole CD collection to MP3 files. Upload the lot to your iPod, and there you have it – music on the move. It’s not the cheapest digital music player you can find, but once you’ve used an iPod with its enviably large touchscreen and giant storage capability, the difference is definitely worth paying for. Plus, the iPod is so indispensable that it has quickly become an essential component of many other innovative music gadgets, as you’ll see with our next gadget...

Spotify
It’s one thing to be able to dock your iPod to an amplifier with quality speakers, but don’t forget about digital (DAB) radio stations and the many thousands of internet radio stations that are out there. The EVOKE Flow combines DAB digital radio with Wi-Fi technology and FM to embrace many different ways of listening to audio – including Internet radio stations, DAB digital radio, regular FM, and podcasts. A big bonus (especially for those unlucky few who are without an iPod) is the ability to stream music files direct from your PC. As a Wi-Fi connected radio with an intuitive user interface, this innovative gadget offers a powerful online search engine to easily and quickly find the required station and content without relying on a PC. If you want to dock your iPod with the EVOKE Flow then there’s a handy accessory to do just that. There’s even an optional battery pack to provide around 15 hours of portable listening. The days of FM-only radio are long gone! Discover what’s out there and enjoy even more choice from an ever-growing list of great (free!) radio stations.
Spotify is software that turns your PC into one of the best music gadgets around, and it’s genuinely changed the way people listen to, discover (and rediscover) music. Imagine having instant access to a library of tens of thousands of CDs – over 6 million tracks – and being able to play a whole album, back-to-back (including new releases) for absolutely no charge. Yes – it’s 100% free and 100% legal, with backing from most major record labels worldwide. Simply download their software, sign up, and launch the player. Then, much like Apple’s iTunes, you can search by artist, album name and a host of other categories. Find the music you like and hit ‘Play’. The service is paid for by the occasional advert, both on-screen and audio-based, but this is very unobtrusive and the average album will play through with only a small handfull of short adverts. For a subscription fee you can make Spotify ad-free; that said, the level of advertising is unobtrusive enough for many listeners. For easy music on the go, there’s even a version of Spotify for mobile phones. What better way to check out those new releases before you buy, or to rediscover the music you grew up with? There’s even an option to buy and download music as MP3 files for your iPod. Spotify really is a music-lovPRICE: FREE! ers paradise!. FIND OUT MORE AT: www.spotify.com

Agust inTorralbo
An Night of Fashion Magic FROM
WORDS BY DARIO POLI
The lights at the Hotel Incosol exhibition marquis dimmed. The spotlights came on as attractive TV compare, Cristina Pita, and event organiser, Morten Røngaard, opened “Marbella, Marbella” - Spanish designer Agustin Torralbo’s Couture winter collection show, so named after the music written by Dario Poli in support of Dario’s campaign promoting a positive image for Marbella. In a short speech, Cristina introduced the marvellous Welsh tenor Steve Lloyd-Morgan, who — with a fine vocal solo — welcomed the 400 or so guests with an invitation to raise their glasses (filled with the new “Marbella Marbella” wine) in a toast to the City of Marbella. With great gusto he began the famous Brindisi drinking song, from Verdi’s popular opera ‘La Traviata’, which received thunderous applause. He completed his set by a performing a song from the musical ‘Starlight Express’. Dynamic singer Yanela Brooks, wearing a dress designed by Agustin Torralbo, took to the stage and sang two up-tempo songs, including ‘Disco Inferno’. Morten followed by thanking his sponsors — the Danish bank Nykredit, the Danish Football Club OB, Fischer Mercedes of Marbella, the Scandinavian magazine Solkysten, and Enkvist Wines. The fashion show began with a steady stream of elegant models and starting with younger ladies wearing modern, well-designed dresses for fashion-conscious girls. This was followed by Augustin’s new evening and bridal wear collection in a variety of eye-catching, stunning designs that received spontaneous rounds of applause from the audience — some of whom were buyers from Madrid and as far as the Middle East. Torralbo’s brilliant use of materials, some outfits adorned with decorative floral bouquets, perfectly enhanced the femininity and figures of the women wearing them. Set to calls for an encore, Agustin Torralbo led all of his models back onto the catwalk for a final display of the entire “Marbella Marbella” collection. He was received with tumultuous applause and the show was brought to a dazzling finale when Yanela Brooks entered the stage once again and sang her own interpretation of the song that started it all — “Marbella Marbella” in Spanish. Morten then announced the winners of the raffle,

the top prize being a choice of designer dress from the show. He and Cristina then handed out bouquets of flowers to the sponsors. Walter Fischer, the owner of Mercedes Marbella and a staunch supporter of the Marbella campaign, was on hand with three magnificent cars — one being the latest Lamborghini, adding an extra touch of glamour to the event. A special thanks must be accorded to hard working Morten Røngaard for successfully organising “Marbella Marbella” from inception to finale, and who was also responsible for raising sponsorship money and the raffle prizes. Have Confidence in your Smile DR. NINA KING LAUNCHES OASIS DENTAL CLINIC IN MARBELLA
Service with a smile is more than guaranteed with the opening of Dr. Nina King’s brand new dental surgery in central Marbella at the end of March. Despite her apparent youth, Dr. Nina King has more than a decade of experience and is a highly qualified dentist, being one of a select few who is registered in the UK as a specialist in prosthodontics. Her bright and modern surgery will welcome patients for all of their dental requirements. Dr. Nina King’s approach to dental care is based on encouraging patients to maintain the health of their teeth, and planning appropriate treatment to preserve good dental health in the long-term. The emphasis is on prevention, function and of course beauty; and takes into account all related factors rather than just a quick fix. “We will offer whitening and all aspects of cosmetic dentistry, implants and full mouth makeovers and/or rehabilitation to correct problems with bite and appearance as well as general dentistry,” she explains. “It is so important for people to have regular check-ups and maintenance routines in order to avoid seeing the dentist just to treat pain or when problems have already occurred,” advises Dr. King. “It’s common for me to see patients who have had procedures that look and work well temporarily but then go wrong at a later date as they were simply not planned out well from the start”. All treatment plans and prices at Oasis Dental Clinic will be quotedin writing and general treatment charges will be posted on the website.
sit back and relax. The practice is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, including a digital x-ray facility (known to reduce patient radiation dosage by up to 30% compared to conventional x-rays) and a laser tooth-whitening system. The surgery will employ the highest standards of cross-infection control and hygiene and utilise the best available materials. As a highly professional environment, the Oasis Dental Clinic will focus on listening to patients, explaining all treatment options and ensuring that patients can discuss any doubts that they might have. Patient understanding and active participation are a key factor in successful treatment outcomes. STATE-OF-THE-ART DENTISTRY Offering complete dental care, Oasis Dental Clinic prides itself on its friendly and personalised service. Dr King’s professional team includes a highly qualified British dental nurse and multi-lingual receptionist. “Ongoing training will play an important role at my practice”. Dr. Nina King offers straightforward advice and explanations of procedures to patients, making visits to the dentist stress-free. “I am well-versed in handling all kinds of patients – including people who may be a little nervous,” says Nina, whose disarming smile goes a long way to putting patients at ease.
A VERSATILE AND CARING PROFESSIONAL Dr. King has had experience working in a several dental environments: from teaching in dental hospitals, providing domiciliary care (home visits) to housebound patients and working in private practice in the West End of London. “Of the three dentists in private practice, I was the busiest as many patients would often specifically request a female dentist.” All patients coming to the practice will have an initial examination, including screening for oral cancer and other dental diseases. Often we will take x-rays, etc., and then following this we will discuss potential and recognised problems. Depending on the complexity of the case, some patients may need study models and further tests to finalise a comprehensive treatment plan that suits that individual patient.
DR. NINA KING BDS, MCLIN DENT PROS ( LON.), MRD RCS ( LON.) Dr. Nina King received her undergraduate dental degree from the Royal London Hospital in England in 1998. Since then she completed extensive post-graduate training within the UK; gaining first her fellowship degree, then a Masters in Prosthodontics with distinction and ultimately the highest specialist qualification in Prosthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons in London in July 2006. Dr Nina King is committed to maintaining high standards and is a member of several professional bodies, such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the British Prosthodontic Society, and regularly attends conferences and courses. Specialised in cosmetic procedures in particular, Dr. King is offering a special introductory discount for all new patients in April.

THE
MOISTURISER
The secret to a fresh complexion is hydration. Use a moisturiser formulated for your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive or combination) morning and night, and never forget to remove your make-up before you go to bed — indispensable if you want to wake up to radiant skin. Application. Apply moisturiser to your thoroughly-cleansed face and neck every morning and massage delicately with your fingertips to ensure the cream is fully absorbed. In lieu of your regular moisturiser, consider switching to a tinted moisturiser to help even out skin tone. CONCEALER
Use concealer to disguise under-eye circles, blemishes, or redness so you have a flawless canvass to work with. Green-based concealer neutralises redness and evens out the skin, while beige illuminates shadow zones, under-eye shadows and little spots. Application. Apply concealer in small quantities on red areas, shadows and imperfections. Dab the product until the colour absorbs into your skin. To highlight your skin, choose a concealer with light diffusing particles and sweep over the bridge of your nose, forehead, and cheekbones for an instant pick-me-up. If you have darker skin, opt for an apricot concealer and apply to your cheekbones to illuminate your skin and lend it glow. FOUNDATION
This season, skin should be veiled in a silky transparent film that stays put until bed-time. You may think this is easier said than done, but the only secret is in the choice of foundation. It should be light and luminous with a highly absorbant texture. A good foundation should glide onto the skin, creating a barely-there nude effect. Application. Apply in small quantities to the nose, forehead and chin, and spread outwards using your fingertips until it is fully blended into the skin. BLUSHER
This season it’s all about a fresh complexion, with just enough of a glow to make the face look radiant… use light-diffusing powder and light-reflecting blushers. Application. Swirled onto cheekbones for a romantic effect, or applied along the temples for a more glamorous look, blusher should highlight your make-up but remain natural. Don’t be afraid to use colour: a touch of pink, coral or apricot shades on your cheekbones enhances a fresh complexion. MASCARA
Aim for maxi eyelashes that open up your eyes without looking made-up. To achieve this, use the latest in curling, lenthening mascara. The effect is stunning against nude skin. Application. For a set of romantic lashes, apply your mascara lengthways, working from right to left rather than from bottom to top, depositing the mascara in the middle of your lashes. Use the brush to separate and curl lashes to the max. LIPS
This season’s nude look requires lips that are shiny, radiant and luscious, with hints of pink or transparent red that highlight their natural shade. Application. To get a studied ‘natural’ effect, don’t use lip liner; just apply a touch of satin lipstick to the centre of the lips and pout to blend, or use see-though gloss to add shine. Apply your lipstick with your fingertips to get a plumped effect. H&L

First held way back in 1905, the 80th International Geneva Motor Show (Salon International de l’Auto) has once again been hosted at the Geneva Palexpo convention centre in Geneva. The Salon is organised by the Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles, and hosts everything from prototypes and technical developments by equipment manufacturers,
Hot Wheels
to new and upcoming models. As international motor shows go, it’s the key auto industry event of the year, a permanent fi xture on every serious petrol-head’s calendar. With the global recession steadily eroding the car market over the last couple of years, it would be easy to think that new car development might have been stifled, forcing car manufacturers to focus on existing models, react to increasing pressure to make greener cars, and generally weather the economic storm. Not so. In fact there are so many developments on the horizon, from a whole raft of car-makers and designers, you might think the recession had never happened. Optimism and forward-thinking is definitely the order of the day at Geneva. This year’s list of unveilings were both intriguing and impressive, with debuts from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, BMW, Lotus, and Porsche, to name but a few of the top-marques. There’s a range of releases from familiar names such as Seat, Vauxhall, Ford and Honda. But if you like your motor show cars to be more ‘adventurous’, there’s also a good dose of concepts to be had from makers such as Rinspeed and Bufori. Every motor show has its highlights, so what’s hot? All of it, you could say. But ‘hot’ doesn’t always have to mean ‘supercar’. Yes, supercars are impressive; Yes, they’re fast; but they’re also super-expensive and normally only seen at car shows. So, we’re going to present our own hotlist from the Geneva Motor Show – but this time ‘hot’ means cars you stand a chance of seeing on the open road in the coming year.

WHAT’S HOT AT THE
THE AUDI A1 SPORTINESS AND INDIVIDUALITy IN THE COMPACT CLASS
After two (yes, two) concepts further back in its family tree, Audi finally announce the A1. They’re firmly setting their sights on a class previously dominated by the Mini Cooper, aiming to make the A1 the sportiest hot hatch of them all. The design is unique and modern. Styling cues place the A1 comfortably in the Audi family, including the side line with the distinctive roof arch, the coupe-like C-pillars, the large wheel wells and the front end with typical Audi single-frame grille. The hood and rear hatch encompass the body; the tail lights are three-dimensionally molded and present an unmistakable design, day or night. The A1 is available with two TFSI or two TDI engines (four-cylinders). The 1.2-litre TFSI produces 63 kW (86 hp) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque, with a top speed of 111 mph. What it lacks in all-out acceleration, the 1.2 TFSI gains in fuel consumption and green credentials – using just 5.1 litres of fuel per 100 km (about 46 mpg), while emitting a respectable 191 grams of CO2 per mile. The 1.4-litre TFSI provides 90 kW (122 hp) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. Using the optional the sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission, this model can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.1 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. The lesser of Audi’s two 1.6-litre TDIs produces 66 kW (90 hp) and 230 Nm (169 lb-ft) of torque, delivering 0-100 km/h in 12.2 seconds. The top of the range 1.6-litre TDI delivers 77 kW (105 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft), with 0-100 km/h in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 116 mph. All models feature a recuperation system that allows them to recover energy during braking, and are coupled with an automatic start-stop system. The interior of the A1 is spacious and airy. Sporting coloured air nozzles, LED interior lights, and seat covers in expressive colours, it’s clear that, with the A1, customisation is king. The sheer choice of equipment on offer presents ample opportunity to match the car’s styling to the driver’s taste. The clear ergonomics, and the uncompromisingly high fit and finish, typify the high standards we’re used to from Audi. The Audi A1 will go on sale in Europe later this year, with prices starting from around 16,000 euros.
VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG NEW TOUAREG TAKES THE SUV IDEA INTO THE FUTURE Already unveiled in Munich back in February, the new Touareg is up to 200 kg lighter and up to 20 percent more fuel efficient than the original model that was launched in 2003, earning itself a steady following ever since. At the heart of the new model is a range of highly efficient petrol and diesel engines and, for the first time, a Hybrid. The new Touareg Hybrid brings together a 3.3-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine, producing 330 horsepower and 265 lbs ft of torque, and an electric motor generating 47 hp, resulting in a total output of around 380 hp and 428 lbs ft of torque. The electric motor can operate independently of the combustion engine making the new Touareg a full hybrid. On electric power alone the new Touareg is capable of travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph. Alternatively the electric motor can supplement the V6 engine to provide a useful boost during overtaking manoeuvres and allows the Touareg Hybrid to accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 149 mph. The entrylevel engine is a powerful 3.0-litre V6 TDI engine, generating 240 hp and 405 lbs ft of torque while returning 38.1 mpg and emitting 195 g/km of CO2. At the top of the new Touareg range is a new 4.2-litre TDI V8 engine, producing 340 hp and

590 lbs ft of torque. Despite its substantial power and torque outputs, the new engine is still capable of achieving 31 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 239 g/km of CO2. The exterior of the new Touareg has evolved, sporting a contemporary new design that eclipses the previous model. The front end has clearly adopted the company’s new design language, as seen on the latest Golf and Polo. Longer than its predecessor and with a range of new features (including an electrically latched rear seat, an all-new interior with updated dashboard, and an electric parking brake) the Touareg also offers what is claimed to be the largest panoramic sunroof in its class. Volkswagen has not only made the new Touareg lighter, more fuel efficient, and an agile performer, it has also made it into an even more versatile all-round vehicle. The all-new interior features a subtle mix of leather, wood and aluminium highlights and more space than ever before thanks to the longer
GENEVA MOTOR SHOW wheelbase. Rear legroom has also grown significantly due to the new sliding rear bench and reclining backrests. Production of the new Touareg for the UK market starts in June before first deliveries commence in August. Prices and specifications to be announced.
RENAULT WIND A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN THE ROADSTER MARKET Geneva hosts yet another world première with the unveiling of Renault’s brand-new coupé-roadster – the interestinglynamed Renault Wind. Once again, it’s a car that aims to take on giants in its class – namely the Mini convertible and the Peugeot 207CC. Based on the same platform as the successful Twingo, the Renault Wind is a two-seater coupé-roadster which features a new and innovative way of opening up the roof. Renault say that the Wind is aimed at motorists who lust after a distinctive and compact car that’s also convertible, yet practical enough for everyday use. The electric hard-top pivots open in a speedy 12 seconds – and, rather incredibly, is a one-piece roof that’s hidden under the rear tonneau. At only 3.83 metres in length, the Wind’s compact dimensions

make it a nimble machine in and about town, but it’s also the only car of its class to provide just as much luggage space (270dm3 VDA), regardless of whether the roof is up or down. At launch the Wind has a choice of two engines. Firstly, there’s the turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (the 1.2 TCE from the Twingo GT) which is capable of producing up to 100 horsepower (enough to deliver 0-60 mph in around 11 seconds). Then there’s the 1.6 litre version from the Twingo RenaultSport, kicking out 133 bhp. The Wind will hit dealers in the UK in late Summer. Prices are expected to start from around £16,000. >> Photo credit: Patrick Curtet

MERCEDES-BENZ F STYLE STYLISH, SPORTY INTERPRETATION OF THE NEW MERCEDESBENZ DESIGN The F800 Style is both a technology package and a showcar. The latest MercedesBenz research vehicle was created through close international cooperation between the technical research and advanced engineering departments, and the advanced design studios in Sindelfingen and Como, Italy. It features a 300hp V6 engine with plug-in 109 horsepower hybrid drive; LED headlights; translucent roof; wood-veneered interior, and rear pivot-and-slide doors. All of the components of the vehicle’s extremely efficient and environmentally compatible alternative drive system (either Plug-in Hybrid or fuel cell drive) are installed in a space-saving manner in the engine compartment and in the gaps within the chassis. As a result, the entire interior space is preserved and offers plenty of room for up to five occupants. A synthesis of green technology and stylish-sporty design, the F800 Style impressively demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’ ability to harmonize automobile fascination and emotion with the continually increasing demands of environmental compatibility.
THE NEW FERRARI 458 ITALY IN C. SALAMANCA This new model Ferrari is a sign of beauty expressed in its fullest The new Ferrari 458 Italy can be admired in C. Salamanca, the official Ferrari dealer in Spain. As indicated by Carlos Lopez, head of brand sales, the latest model is a sign of beauty expressed to its fullest. The Ferrari 458 Italy is five years ahead in design, technology and mechanics with respect to any existing model on the market today. Lopez said that during the year 2010, the seven units that will come to C. Salamanca are already sold. Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari president, chose the name as a tribute to the country Italy, whereas previously the nicknames of the trademark patterns were reserved for Italian cities or historical names of the mark. The interior of the Ferrari 458 Italy is more conservative, or at least seems a more logical evolution of its predecessor. The black leather, Alcantara fabric and aluminium dominate the interior, with just a few touches of red and yellow on the clocks and the steering wheel. The engine of the Ferrari 458 Italy comes from its name - 458 is not the power but the union of 4.5, which is 8 per cylinder and V8 engine. Its power rises to 570 hp, which means 60 bhp more than the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km is 3.4 seconds and it reaches a top speed of 325 km. per hour. The gearbox of the Ferrari 458 Italy comes from the technology of Formula 1 Ferrari. The box is a seven-speed dual clutch. Compared to the Ferrari California, the brand has reduced its response time, as they have applied for a specific configuration of power and torque curves of the new V8. On a final note the Ferrari 458 Italy ceramic brakes are a standard feature as in all models manufactured since 1 January 2008. FITNESS, LEISURE & GOLF > ARE YOU FEELING FITTER AND HEALTHIER? IF NOT … WHY NOT? Well, if you don’t do anything to improve your health and fitness I could guess your answer to the first question! Why? Because I’ve ‘been there and done that’ (and also not done that..!) and that’s talking from both a personal and a professional point of view. Lack of exercise or just general physical activity
can make you feel slightly sluggish, or even mentally and physically lethargic, de-motivated or just lacking in general
enthusiasm. It could be you just feel constantly under the weather! Even when the sun is shining, it doesn’t appear to be shining on you! Sound familiar? Shall I continue? Well, let’s not continue on a negative theme — it’s officially Summer time! And if a spring isn’t in your step, let’s do something about it.
SUMMER TIME HERE WE COME…
BY LINDA
Try to keep the spring in your step Well what are you waiting for? Pack your gym bag, put on your trainers and don some lycra… Only joking! But it can feel like a bit of a minefield going to a gym for the first time: What clothes to wear? What gym to go to? Do people wear lycra or skimpy attire? Are there bulging biceps at the door or six-packs (not the beer variety of course) on display? However, we could liken the gym to a variety pack simply because there is variety — there’s different shapes and sizes, different ages, gender, and attire. In plain and simple terms, wear what’s comfortable for you — leggings and sweat bands if you like (guys!!). But what gym do I go to? Well, I might be able to help you there. Having worked in a variety of leisure complexes and gyms I have concluded that the ‘longevity’ of your gym attendance will be dependent on a number of factors. It is not just about the abundance of nice shiny gym equipment on offer or the size of the jacuzzi, it’s also about the people. The social aspect can be of considerable benefit to you, so its not just about the exercise. It’s about the physical and the mental benefits, and this can be derived from attendance at a group facility. The last edition brought us an introduction to exercises that you can do at home or even at your work desk. Iin other words, if you can’t get to the gym (or a leisure facility) bring the gym to you! However, if the only reason you prefer to do exercise at home is because you are gym shy, don’t despair — the Dona Lola Resort Calahonda is here. I am delighted to announce that since the last edition I have associated myself with Dona Lola, and over future issues I will incorporate illustrations and photographs to help you make better use of the health benefits I impart. These will also include exercises that can be done at home, so the introduction of chair-based exercises in the last article will be continued in the next feature. In the next issue I will be giving you a lot more information about the resort and its facilities, membership details and any offers that may be available for our readers, so watch this space.

Apartment Terraces BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE Holistic gardeners authors and broadcasters enjoy the launch of their new book ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’

APRIL MAY
Although only ten to fifteen percent of apartment owners in Andalusia have attractive and productive terraces, there is no reason why that figure cannot be fifty percent or more; something that would make apartment blocks more appealing to live in, pass by and sell. The coast was once attractive — rocky andbeachy with native plants in the dunes and backed by verdant mountainsides — and only visited by shepherds with flocks of goats. Now, fifty years after out first visit to Spain, the coast has become in some areas a concrete jungle needing to be re-greened. Luckily, that could be easily achieved, for there are a many plants beyond the once-popular geraniums (now decimated by the dreaded geranium moth) which are more suitable for year-round displays in pots, window boxes and planters. In our latest book we present over a hundred varieties grouped into those that actually love the sun; those that prefer it for only part of the day on east and west facing terraces balconies, terraces and window sills; those that only survive semi shade with the help of awnings and blinds to protect them from the hottest summer sun on open terraces and the low winter sun on covered terraces; and those few that genuinely survive in deep shady corners. For a start, succulents are much more successful on south facing terraces than English style annuals. It’s not only the terraces that are waiting to be transformed into attractive open-air living spaces, but balconies and window sills too — not only brightening up your own apartment, but also the entire block, and indeed the neighbourhood. Unfortunately the competitions that used to be promoted in Andalusia, Concursos de embellecimiento de fachadas y balcones, are now no more. Perhaps some gardening clubs, town resident associations and town halls can start them again. And it is not only flowering and evergreen plants that can be grown, but also a wide variety of culinary and medicinal herbs, fruits and vegetables. In trials with friends it is very possible to grow twenty types of herbs in window boxes or pots, nine column at fruit trees and a strawberry barrel on a small six square metre terrace, and fi fteen vitamin and antioxidant fi lled vegetables in one square metre. We list some fi fty vegetables easy to grow in small areas in relevant chapters of the book. Of those (including sprouting seeds) some thirty only need the area of an A4 sheet of paper! Some may react with “That’s impossible!” but it is not. Indeed apartment gardening is in many ways
< THE GARDEN Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s new book is now entering the book shops and, for convenience, can also be obtained by mail order from the web sites of Bookworld and Santana books. easier then villa gardening, especially on the Mediterrean as indicated below. • There are wide range of suitable containers. Better composts and ecological pest controls are now available. • You can do your gardening in the day or at night if you have terrace lights. • On a covered terrace you can still work when it rains. The blind can be pulled down if the rain is driven in by the wind. • By using growing tables you can build up plant collections or grow vegetables sitting down or standing up with little bending. • You can change the position of plant containers and indeed the total layout several times a year. • It doesn’t take up much time. • It can be a fascinating and money-saving hobby for persons of all ages, family or student groups, the fit and infirm, and full and part-time residents. The possibilities for decorating terraces go beyond plants. Ceramic pots and plates, tiled or painted murals, mini fountains or ponds, hanging antiquities and even plastic flowers and plants are possible. The latter especially useful to part time residents. In two pages we cannot cover all the possibilities. But ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean Style’ is packed full of practical ideas, advice and illustrations for creating enviable living spaces on small, medium and large terraces. Spaces useable throughout the year. No longer allow your terraces, balconies and window sills to be described as below. • A terrace as a wasted space, a store room or an eyesore rather than a planted-up patio in the sky, an extra room, the most used room in the apartment or an urban allotment. • A balcony as an eyesore, a collection of pots and window boxes full of dead annuals, empty and forgotten rather than a flower bed in the sky, a herb garden or an urban veggie plot. • A windowsill as a nothing, an untidy bottle bank, dusty rather than a micro planted-up balcony, an attractive bouquet, or plant collection or window box of cut and come again salad leaves. Luckily these changes can be achieved in hours or a couple of weekends, versus months or years for a garden surrounding a villa. We look forward to seeing a welcome change in Spain! H&L
PLANT OF THE MONTH SEDUM MORGANIANUM One of a large family of interesting succulents and one of our favourites for sunny terraces. It’s common English name is donkeys tail. Look good in pots, including hanging ones, and window boxes. Stands up to mild frosts. Not affected by salt spray. Only reddish orange flowers but they make an impact. Can forget to water for weeks.

AFFORDABLE LUXURY AT NEW COUNTRYSIDE BOUTIQUE HOTEL
With its stylish rustic salons, 15 luxurious rooms and suites, an attractive restaurant with panoramic views to the Med, a bijou bodega, and adjacent meeting room – for business coaching or company incentives, Hotel Hermitage offers a range of hotel facilities way beyond those expected of a 3-star establishment. One of the main attractions of the recently inaugurated hotel is the excellent cuisine on offer at the Calima restaurant. With spectacular views across the Casares countryside to the Mediterranean, Straits of Gibraltar and the Atlas mountains of Morocco, the restaurant is a true gastronomic gem. The menus are the creation of Gonzalo Gutierrez, a top executive chef whose impressive career has seen him head up the kitchens of the Meliá Hotel group in the Caribbean, as well as the prestigious Casino de Aranjuez. Gutierrez has devised a tantalizing repertoire of dishes based on the freshest local Mediterranean produce, including fruits, vegetables and herbs from the hotel’s own kitchen garden, fine fish and seafood, along with local game specialities including venison, wild boar and partridge. The Hotel Hermitage Casares has many inviting corners in which guests can relax, enjoy a drink and soak up the views, including a cosy lounge bar with an open fireplace, serving premium brand spirits, liqueurs , champagne and cava. All rooms and suites have their own private terrace, and meals can be enjoyed in rooms and suites if requested. The hotel offers 24-hour room service and caters to special events such as weddings and company incentives.

APRIL MAY
About 3 hours away from Calahonda, Cordoba is one of Spain’s most historic and beautiful cities, and can be said to be the true heart of Andalucia. Once the largest city in the world, with about 500,000 occupants, Cordoba was known as a political, social and cultural mecca in the 11th century. Cordoba is the essence of Spain – with Iberian, Roman, Visigoth, Jewish, Islamic and Christian civilizations captured in its stones and monuments. Now a modern city, its ancient architecture and monuments are still intact today and serve as a window into its remarkable past. The Mosque of Cordoba (la Mezquita), now Cordoba’s Cathedral is one of Spain’s most visited attractions. VISIT SPAIN’S GREATEST GARDENS — 5-16 MAY 2010 The month of May brings riots of colour to Cordoba as it hosts the contest of the patios — roses sweep down stucco walls, fountains tumble into mirror-surfaced pools and geraniums spill from neatly planted window boxes. Moreover, the various scents of flowers and plants truly make this city enchanting. The city provides maps to visitors to show where each patio in the contest is located. Be forewarned, there are huge crowds in the historic center to see the patios, so it’s best to go early in the morning. The Patio Festival is a tradition that began in 1918. It had been interrupted during the Spanish Civil War and was reintroduced in the 1950s. A visit to the Palacio de Viana to examine its ten patios, each a lovely example of private gardening, is a must for anyone who loves flowers and gardens. Should you decide to visit Cordoba during the Festival of Patios, it’s recommended that you do so between Sunday night and Thursday night, leaving yourself 2-3 nights in the city to be able to enjoy a worthwhile stay. Al Lago’s interior is strikingly simple with a focus on understated luxury; comfortable beds, crisp linens, polished natural plaster walls and soothing earth tones. The The centerpiece of each room is its wrought iron French doors opening onto balconies with views over the lake. The restaurant is the passion of chef/owner Stefan Crites who trained in New York for 13 years before moving to this Andalucian pueblo. A GUIDE TO THE BEST RESTAURANTS ON THE COAST
Cabopino Port
One of the most attractive settings on the southern coast of Spain, Puerto de Cabopino enjoys one of the best beaches in Andalucia. The port is a short drive from Marbella and just off the coastal highway between Elviria and Calahonda. Cabopino is surrounded by attractive apartments around courtyards with shops, cafes and restaurants overlooking the quiet little marina. Cabopino marina is a pleasant place to dine during the day and in the evening, with some fabulous restaurants — from pizza and Italian, to traditional Spanish favourites such as paella and international cuisine. All tastes are catered for and vegetarian menus are also available. The wide range of activities available at the marina include chartering a boat or trimaran, dolphin trips, paragliding or scuba diving. Hire of jet skis, banana boats and inflatable rings are also available here. There is a fully-stocked and equipped marine and watersports shop on-site. Fishing is permitted on the sea wall.

so good they named it twice
A brand-new themed bar recently opened on the 27th of March in Cabopino Port. Daniel Brown and the Coast’s much-loved Sinatra singer, Paul Ellis, have created a great space in which to show off some local talent. Of course Paul will be there singing every night making the perfect accompaniment. Paul has been living on the coast for 25 years and is well known for his fantastic singing voice — when you close your eyes ‘Ol Blue Eyes is Back’. He was a regular artist at Joys in Puerto Banus and first seen in Playbach hanging out with the likes of Shirley Bassey and Sean Connery. Now he is excited about this new project, the “New York New York” music bar, and hopes it will attract old and new fans. Paul has lots to celebrate as he has been living a healthy lifestyle, alcohol free, for the past 18 months and is feeling great. “The culture around Puerto Banus lead him to drink far too much” he comments. “New York New York” is behind Julies Bar & Bistro in Cabopino Port and will be open every night from from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. It is also available for private parties. Paul and Danny look forward to seeing you there soon.

THE WEATHER WILL BE HEATING UP VERY SOON AND YOUR DOG MAY WANT TO SWIM IN YOUR POOL WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE IN THE POOL.
Dive in paws first FOR ADOPTION TOBY
This is Toby who was left behind by his owner who is sick. This lovely little fellow is very easy and nice with all other dogs, children, people and cats. He was born on 15-8-04 and is only 30 cm high. This small boy is very sad and we hope to find him a good home soon! For more information contact: Triple A, Telephone: 952 771 586 info@aaahelps.com www.aaahelps.com (please quote number Toby 16701)
• As with children, never let your pet swim unattended. If possible have a gated pool to keep the dogs out when you’re not around to supervise for safety purposes. • Rinse your dog with fresh water after a swim in the pool to remove chlorine from the coat and skin. If you don’t do this the skin might get overly dried out and irritated from the chlorine. Make sure to dry the dog’s ears well to ward off ear infections. You may wish to purchase ear drops for your dog’s ears to help prevent this as well. • Make sure that the dog is able to get out of the pool by itself in case you are not there to help. You may want to go over this with the dog first to make sure he or she knows where the steps are and how to use them to get out of the pool. • Have fresh water available for the dog to drink and discourage the drinking of the chlorinated pool water. • Safety first: Have a flotation device ready in case you have to go in and help your dog to the edge. Using a floating device such as a paddle board or life saving ring will help you get your dog to the safety of the stairs; instead of just trying to grab the dog you can float and stabilize yourself in order to reach safety. Enjoy the approaching summer months by the pool, or in it with your dog. Your dog just wants to have fun and so do you, so jump in and swim!

COMMUNITY AND CHARITY NEWS ALONG THE COAST
Promoting Positive People on the Costa BY DAVID JEFFERS MAIRS Like me, you’re no doubt pleased to see the back of all that rain. Mind you, the plants have had a great time and most gardens, private and common, are awash with colour and looking spectacular. The reservoirs are filled to capacity and the golf courses are in peak condition. I, like so many golfers, am looking forward to getting back on the course on a regular basis and, in my case, breaking out my new golf clubs — a birthday gift from my children. I’ve just celebrated my 60th birthday and what a great time I had. Many thanks to my family and friends whose effort made this significant birthday a memorable one. You’ll have heard the saying “Be careful what you wish for”. Well, when asked by my family “What would you like for your birthday?”, I mentioned that I’d like to have a parachute jump (before I’m too old)… Well, guess what? I’m off to sunny Scotland in early May to do just that. It’s a sponsored jump, in tandem of course, in aid of the Alzheimer’s Association. Although I’ve already got a bunch of pledges, I could use a whole lot more… (hint). The jump will be on video and will be posted on Facebook and YouTube for all to see. The sight of an ageing Scotsman being carried scratching and screaming to the aircraft door, before finally being thrown out, should bring a smile to everyone’s face. Wish me luck.
Haiti
Maurice Boland, as mentioned in our previous issue, who is well-known within the community for his time and effort given to raising funds for several charities, has been busy fund raising in aid of Haiti. These events on the Costa del Sol during February and early March included a celebrity golf tournament, two Gala Dinners and a 12-hour music marathon, and have now raised a substantial 30,000 Euros for the children of Haiti. Congratulations to Maurice and his team for yet another successful effort. (See full story on opposite page).

HM THE QUEEN ACKNOWLEDGES COSTA DEL SOL “HELP HAITI CAMPAIGN” REPORT BY NICK HOLLAND
Her Majesty The Queen has sent her best wishes for the continued success of the Costa del Sol’s fundraising efforts for Haiti. A letter received from Buckingham Palace reads “Her Majesty was interested to learn that the British expatriate community in the Costa del Sol have raised over 20,000 euros for the Haiti Earthquake Fund… Her Majesty conveys warm good wishes to you and all concerned”. Fundraising events on the Costa del Sol during February and early March included a celebrity golf tournament, two Gala Dinners and a 12 hour music marathon, amongst others; All have now raised a substantial 30,000 euros for the children of Haiti following the devastating earthquake. An ongoing campaign instigated and spearheaded by Maurice Boland of Talk Radio Europe has also raised money. 100% of the proceeds have reached Haiti in record time via The Ark Christian Fellowship in Spain and has gone direct to The International Child Care Ministries. The Ministries have maintained a presence in Haiti for nearly 44 years and currently support over 9,000 children in 52 schools.

includes ITV’s X Factor finalist Rowetta, tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, WoW Factor runner-up Rebecca Tate, Mayte, Daniel Boland, The Unity Gospel Singers and the popular classical group Tres Divos. Recorded with just 4 days notice and without any funding whatsoever, the single was entirely dependant on the selfless generosity in both time and resources of so many. Now this single stands as the first recorded and released “classical cover” song for charity! As well as in Spain and the UK, the single was recently released throughout North America, Canada and 19 other countries worldwide. It is hoped an equally significant amount is raised from the sale of this charity single which can be downloaded from the internet music store iTunes. To purchase and also view the highly moving YouTube video, please go to the links on the home page of www.talkradioeurope.com Also commending the Help Haiti Campaign, Marbella Tourist Minister Jose Luis Hernández wrote “the expat community is giving us an example of generosity and

The money raised so far is not only helping to rebuild many of these schools, but, critically, will provide urgent and essential shelter before the four-month Atlantic Hurricane season begins in late May. During a radio interview in March, Pastor Varnel Jeune, Director General of Radio Lumière Haiti, told Maurice Boland that he believed the actual death toll following the earthquake far exceeded UN official figures, and was “at least 500,000, but could be as many as a million”. He feared the death toll would continue to rise dramatically if shelters were not provided. Haiti, ever vulnerable to hurricane damage, was left with 800,000 homeless and many thousands dead in 2008 alone. This year, especially with so many already homeless, a combination of stagnant groundwater, the freshly-buried, and sudden flooding could potentially result in the spread of deadly diseases, diseases which could near epidemic proportions according to officials. A crucial part of this continuing campaign to raise funds for Haiti was the recording of a charity single “The Prayer for Haiti” in February. Co-produced by celebrated tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, his Manager Nick Holland, and Maurice Boland; the song, a cover version of the Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli´s highly emotional ballad, “The Prayer”, features acclaimed professionals as well as talented newcomers and combines a powerful eclectic mix of singing styles. commitment in view of the magnitude of the devastation suffered by Haiti... even in these moments of economic crisis... our society, and particularly our expat community, is giving such evident proof of commitment in response to the suffering of human beings, people who did not have anything before the tragedy and the only thing they have left after it is pain and hopelessness. We hope your fund raising initiative will be as successful as possible...our most sincere thanks and our acknowledgement for your humanitarian work.” Of the Charity single Manilva Mayor Antonia Muñoz commented, “We are extremely proud and would very much like to convey our congratulations to the producers of “The Prayer for Haiti”... We very much commend their efforts and that of the entire expatriate community who are banding together to raise much needed funds for this worthy cause”. While the International mass media might move onto other stories, Maurice Boland and the Talk Radio Europe team have vowed to long continue their campaign to help the children of Haiti.
