ABOUT THE COVER MODÁ ARTE MAKE-UP COLLECTION. Modá is a division of Di Liddo & Perego, Italy. Artistic drawings in acrylic paint are created by painter, Sabina Gaetani. www.modacollection.it www.diliddoeperego.it

Moving day is always bittersweet – sadness at leaving the familiar behind, while anticipating the new experiences ahead. More than six years ago, I said goodbye to a home in Malaysia to start a new life in Southern Spain. Today, I say goodbye to a home in Spain to join my daughter and family in the UK. Home & Lifestyle magazine is like a home. There is a family inside — the people whose names you read on the masthead and our advertisers between the pages. It is a family that talks, laughs, argues, decides, designs and creates memories. I published the first issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine in May 2008 and over the years we have all set about rearranging, redecorating, letting go of some things and acquiring others. I have so many to thank before bidding adiós. First, our advertisers throughout the years, who have been my inspiration during the magazine’s transformations. Thank you readers, home owners, interior designers and architects. Most of all, my deepest thanks to the immensely talented group of staff and contributors (old and new) who have made Home & Lifestyle Magazine what it is —

British Gallery to Showcase “Arte Marbella” talent

Fifth International Festival of Art Marbella 20-23 June 2013 Arte Marbella, reaching its 5th edition in June 2013, has become one of Marbella’s most popular and dynamic cultural events. Proving the international reach of Arte Marbella, a gallery from the UK contacted the event organisers in order to represent some of the festival’s talent at a new art space named The Paragon in Cheltenham. Run by Tony Wardle a former marketing executive of advertising agency Saatchi and Saatchi, and daughter Eleanor Wardle, the founder, the pair visited a selection of Arte Marbella artists in Spain, at the hand of the festival’s president, Caroline Bowley. Impressed by the standard, and the international nature of Arte Marbella, the gallerists were taken to artists’ studios - many off the beaten track - around Andalucía. “ We were overwhelmed by both the talent and the hospitality of the artists,” Eleonor Wardle enthused. The mission proved fruitful, and the new UK based gallery will be displaying works by the following artists, all of whom have exhibited at Arte Marbella: Michéle Lehman (Switzerland) figurative painting; Isys Kad (Belgium) cubism painting; Marco Bombach (Germany) Pop art painting; Christa Hillekamp (Germany) surreal landscape painting; Alexey Ejov (Russia) painting; Nimrod Messeg (Israel) wrought iron sculpture; Aurelio Rodríguez (Spain) Portraiture painting; Ana Matias (Spain) Figurative - hand printed lithographs; Esther Meguizo (Spain) abstract painting; Inmaculada Antolin (Spain) hand printed lithographs - abstracts. The Paragon will be opening in early March in Cheltenham’s fashionable Montpellier district. Organised into a number of zones where the avant-garde can hang comfortably near the classical and where abstract, figurative, impressionist, realist, surrealist, naive and pop in any media can all have a place. The gallery will have an international focus, hence the contact with Arte Marbella which boasts to date around 300 artists that have exhibited over the past 4 editions. Inscription is still open for artists wishing to participate in the fifth edition 20-23 June, 2013. For full details see the www.artemarbella.com. A non-profit making organisation, Arte Marbella all interested sponsors, collaborators and volunteers are welcomed by the President Caroline Bowley on: caroline@artemarbella.com.

Perfect Liaisons, Southern Spain’s only platonic paid date service, is delighted to announce that they are now open for business. To celebrate their launch, all ladies who register online with Perfect Liaisons by Monday 11th February, will be entered into a prize draw with a chance to win a dinner date with a “perfect liaison” on Valentine’s Day at a top restaurant in Puerto Banús, plus a complimentary bottle of champagne. Perfect Liaisons, brings a brand new concept to the Costa del Sol by providing platonic paid male dates for sophisticated women looking for a plus-one for special occasions, corporate events, dinners or even a round of golf. All “liaisons” are interviewed personally to ensure that they are all well-presented personable discreet gentlemen, aged from 30 years plus, who understand the importance of treating a lady like a VIP. The idea of a paid date is already popular in the UK and the USA as an immediate solution to finding a date at short notice. Liaisons are usually chosen on the basis that they will be good company, as opposed to film star good looks. Contrary to popular belief, ladies don’t hire a “liaison” to get noticed, it is more about avoiding the wrong type of attention, and of course having a good time. Simon Hindle says, “We have deliberately taken our time in finding our Perfect Liaisons, it’s vital to the reputation of the company and for the ladies that use the service, that we have the right calibre of gentlemen. All Perfect Liaisons’ profiles will include recent professional photographs and each “liaison” will be issued with an ID card for additional peace of mind. Launching in time for Valentine’s Day allows us to treat one lucky lady to a Valentine’s dinner date courtesy of Perfect Liaisons – we guarantee good company and a great time”. Visit the website for information to register your interest and enter the prize draw. Perfect Liaisons Tel: 952 76 84 83 info@perfectliaisons.com www.perfectliaisons.com

Obstacles for the registration of a property purchase in Spain (FAQ) 2013 has started with legislative changes in many areas that are beginning to concern citizens and all legal operations in the real estate law field, a branch of law that is always a locomotive during an economic recovery. Amongst the changes that have come into force on the 1st January 2013 there is one that is going to raise numerous controversies, claims and that is creating a situation of doubt that needs to be clarified immediately by those, who on one hand have created the problem and on the other, those who have the responsibility of advising their clients. I refer to the non-registration of documentation in the Land Registry (in this case, a property purchase or sale) if you have not previously accredited filing self-assessment or, where applicable, the tax return, or a notification under the Act, in connection with any Tax Increment Value of Urban Land (Plusvalía Municipal) .

That’s what Law 16/2012 establishes, by adopting various taxation measures aimed at consolidating public finances and boost economic activity (which will once again redefine the concept of momentum ...), and that Disposal in 4th, amending art. 254 of the Mortgage Law. Many doubts and questions assail us: Will the Registrars really not register a sale with all parameters given and legal requirements, because filing self assessment or tax returns has not taken place? For the purposes of “their business”, if they do not complete the registration they cannot charge their fees ... Is the solution to proceed with communication established byt art. 110.6.b) of the Law Regulating Local Tax? Is it enough to provide the deed signed by seller and buyer, informing the Municipality concerned in writing? Or should the deed be submitted to the City Council, to the Land Registry itself so that they have it for the purpose of registration? The rule omits that the communication should be part of the deed or done subsequently to it, prior to registration. Will the communication serve the Registry for the purpose of complying with art. 254 LH? What happens when the payment of the plusvalia, which is paid by the seller (although susceptible to an agreement so that it is paid by the buyer), and this one as a resident suffers no retention (which is recommended in cases of non resident vendors) made by the buyer, but neither paid nor communicated.... Should the buyer always as a precautionary measure, create a communication to ensure the registration of the sale as he is the one is really interested in the registering taking place? Certainly, one thing is clear: too many obstacles for the real estate business, when things should be simplified. If you have any queries with regards to this matter please contact a professional.

Demand for gold set to rise in 2013 As the global economy continues to struggle, gold looks like it will be in even greater demand in the New Year. Increasing demand from banks and the Asian markets (particularly China), set against restricted supply due to rising costs and production constraints, suggest that gold prices will continue to rise, possibly reaching 2,000$/oz (Reuters). It will be a struggle to keep up with demand if central banks continue to buy more than they are selling, which is welcome news for those relying gold assets as security against loans or as a saleable item. Selling of precious metal jewellery or using it as collateral has been the preferred method of raising funds, quickly, easily and discreetly for many years. Today businesses providing this service are completely regulated. It isn’t just a matter of picking a price out of the air they need to have their finger on the pulse of market trends and daily price fluctuations. Keeping a close eye on the gold markets, Hola Credito, as fully certified short term asset backed lender based in Marbella, has announced that they will be paying the best daily gold rates on the Costa del Sol. Originally set up as an online pawn business, providing the best value short term loans possible for clients living in Spain. As a fully security certified company, Hola Credito has now opened a new office, where clients can either apply online, by telephone or arrange to visit the office in person to discuss their loan requirements, deliver assets and even collect the loan in person. Director and founder, James Peat, says, “Hola Credito operates with the lowest possible overheads in order to keep costs low, so that we can pass on the savings to our clients in the form of the best gold prices and low interest rates. “All valuations are carried out by professionals with many years within their field of expertise and we endeavour to always lend the maximum possible against any particular asset”. The condition of Spain’s banks Timothy Oulton introduces the Conqueror

There is some debate about the condition of Spain’s banks. On one hand, the Bank of Spain said in mid-January that non-performing loans were on the increase and that more than one in nine would probably not be repaid. On the other, the central bank said at the same time that Spanish banks were less dependent on emergency funding from the European Central Bank. In December they borrowed EUR 357bn, appreciably less than the EUR 411bn they took last August. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is relaxed. He is “absolutely convinced that Spanish financial institutions will not require any more funds than they were given already” because they have been subject to a “complete striptease” laying bare their financial circumstances. The prime minister’s optimism is shared, though perhaps with more caution, by investors. Since the beginning of the year they have been buying bank shares, lifting the value of Bankinter by a third and Banco Popular Espanol by a quarter. Investors are also much readier to hold Spanish bonds. Six months ago they were demanding a return of over 7% on their five-year loans to the government. Today they are content with less than 4%. The change is symptomatic of a warmer attitude among investors towards the euro. A month ago it looked as if 2013 would turn out to be a better year for the single currency and halfway through January that is proving to be true. Since the turn of the year the euro has strengthened by three and a half cents against the pound and by one and a half against the US dollar. It has done so mostly as a result of improved sentiment. Twelve months ago it was not unreasonable to question the survival of the single currency with a full complement of member states. Today it feels reasonable to expect that singleness to continue, as a result of the determination of EU leaders and central bankers to do “whatever it takes” to save tahe euro. Today, instead, it is the pound that must face the tough questions. Even though the UK economy appears to be in better shape than Euroland, investors are not satisfied. They fear a third dip into recession. They fear the downgrade of Britain’s AAA credit rating that might follow that dip. They fear the anti-Europe rhetoric in Westminster and the media. And because of those fears their appetite for sterling has faded. So half the euro’s performance against sterling this year is down to improved demand for the single currency; the other half is the result of investors’ disenchantment with the pound. Both attitudes could change. It would be unusual if there were not some new panic in Euroland before too many months have gone by. The UK economy might pick up speed once the cold weather has passed and people are allowed to go back to work and school. But in the meantime there could well be another two or three cents of downside for sterling against the euro. For more information, contact Moneycorp on 952 587 657

The bedroom is a very personal space. It’s a place of rest, relaxation and romance, and a room that probably reveals more about who we are as individuals than any other room in the house. That’s why, when it comes to decorating or redesigning your bedroom, it makes sense to create an environment that reflects your personality and provides an appealing and inviting retreat. A focal point of any bedroom is the bed itself. And by combining bed linen, throws, pillows and a handful of accessories, it’s easy to create a mood and tone that suits your individual style. For those who are looking for a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere in which to wind-down, neutral shades and patterns inspired by nature will provide a soothing balance. Pastel floral hues, white

and wood tones, simple furniture lines and bare floors allow the room to breathe and heightens the senses. If you are happiest amid layers of colour and pattern, the romance of a traditional bedroom is a joyous mix of fluffy duvets covered in cotton chintz, lavish window treatments and plush rugs. The bed is the focal point, perhaps an antique brass or wrought-iron frame, a four poster or a bed with a special headboard either padded in luxurious fabric or ornately carved. However, romantic doesn’t have to mean frilly, flouncy bed linen and heart-shaped pillows in pink and white satin. It’s possible to achieve a subtle romantic feel with a more understated palette and simple accessories, which won’t scare away the boys.

A bedroom with a more masculine sensitivity can be a mix of the tranquil and traditional. Fabrics such as flannel, wool and tweed, inspired by men’s suits, will create a cozy men’s den atmosphere. Contemporary bedroom designs are a mix of the dramatic and the sleek. A small apartment bedroom should make the most of reflective surfaces to open the space and choose theatrical black and white to set the mood. Black and white creates a dramatic contrast in the bedroom, and it’s a colour combination that provides the perfect base for your own personal touches. Kept simple, a monochromatic scheme has a modern, sophisticated look; but it can also be softened with warm neutral shades, or brightened with bold tones such as red, lime, orange or fuchsia.

Crisp white sheets give a bed the luxurious feel of a five-star hotel. They’re inviting and expensive-looking, and an ideal basic element to which you can add your own personal touches. White bed linen can also be accessorised to suit the season. In summer or spring, add fresh shades of citrus, lime and aqua; during autumn and winter, warm up the white with bronze, plum or chocolate accents. Fabrics add texture and warm cosy fabrics can be changed to light and airy ones with the seasons in window dressing, cushions and throws, and bed linen. Fortunately, we are blessed with a number of experienced textile houses along the Coast, who love fabrics and know what works. In addition to fine local brands, we have access to an

eye-watering array of labels from Europe, England, Italy and more. How then do you choose the right fabric for your bedroom? Picking the right fabric really comes down to appeal and suitability. As well as choosing the fabric to create the look you want to achieve, you have to be aware of the environment in which you are placing it, and sample books often put together entire “stories” in fabrics, so that you can easily create a terrific scheme, mixing the right materials for the right jobs. Natural fibres like cotton, hemp, linen or silk have a beautiful hand-feel and look luxurious. That’s why they’re loved by designers and homeowners alike. Silk is fragile in our sunlight, and cottons and linens tend to move as the atmosphere

changes from humid to dry through the year. Therefore, fabric houses are increasingly offering synthetic fibres that mimic the look and feel of the finest natural products. Synthetic fibres such as polyester and acrylics boast better sunlight resistance and durability, and have good thermal properties. They are increasingly favoured for both upholstery and window treatments, which have to live up to wear and tear. Their stiffness can be used to great effect for full, opulent drapery. What’s more, to meet an increasingly fashion-driven market, textile technology is creating fabulous new fabrics with gloss, plastic, metal, and even wood or bamboo-like effects. The long life, thermal insulation and attractive draping of curtains and blinds are more about the HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

lining than the textile itself. Don’t skimp with the cheapest linings, even lining so-called ‘thermal fabrics’ for better wear and warmth. And remember that more lavish curtains can be ordered with a bumph (a thin, quilt-like padding) between the lining and the fashion fabric. Finally, the appearance-change of pile fabrics such as velvet velveteen, corduroy, knitted velour, knitted pile and flock fabrics are tested using the Stoll test. For these, though, lower ratings are fine for low-use pieces — go ahead and cover a chair in your bedroom with a gorgeous fragile silk, or use an embroidered or beaded fabric for cushions or a duvet cover. When you are picking large expanses of fabric for a project be aware that colour differences be-

tween rolls and batches of fabric are unavoidable. The samples displayed on cards or chips may not exactly match the actual yardage you’re after. So, be sure to ask your fabric supplier to colour-batch or sort rolls of fabric so that furniture or curtains hanging together actually match. Material is supplied to be cut in the direction shown in sample presentations. If you wish to use fabric another way — for example, centering a large pattern on a sofa back, or hanging stripes horizontally — ensure you order extra. A bedroom’s decor is important, but it’s what lies under the sheets that makes the biggest impact on a good night’s sleep. Consumers are more educated about what it takes to have a healthy sleep and are looking for mattresses with good

support and a plush feel. Mattress materials now include bamboo, organic wood and cotton, shredded rubber and buckwheat hulls, to name a few. A mattress suited to your body type and sleeping patterns, a good pillow, luxurious smooth sheets and are sure to provide sweet dreams. Finally, don’t give up on that wonderful piece of cloth just because it’s too expensive or not sturdy enough for everyday family use. You can build an entire scheme around one stand-out fabric. Treat yourself to a couple of metres for cushions or a footstool, or for a tiny side chair. Then bring in other hardier or lower-cost textiles for curtains. Be modern and don’t match everything, mix and layer multiple colours, textures and patterns to create a vibrant, one-of-a-kind bedroom.

PICK THE RIGHT DUVET From duck down to goose down. Pros. Down provides superb warmth and draws moisture away from the body better than any other material. It’s worth choosing one with the highest down count that you can afford. Cons. It won’t suit allergy sufferers and can be pricey. Silk Pros. Soft, super-comfortable and warm and a good alternative for allergy sufferers. Cons. Silk duvets are expensive and they’ll require specialist cleaning, but they feel great. Synthetic Pros. Mades from fibres such as

polyester and ideal if you suffer from allergies. They can be washed in most large (60kg +) washing machines to kill mites. A good-value warm and cosy option. Cons. Filling can become lumpy and will flatten down considerably unlike natural fibres. It won’t fold around you as much as down. Wool Pros. Ideal if you’re allergic to feather and down but still want a natural choice. Heavier than down but the springy nature means it keeps its shape for longer. Cons. Beacause the fibres don’t lie flat, it won’t tuck around you as much as a down duvet. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

From its humble beginnings as a purely functional space, the bathroom has evolved into a personal retreat, a model of water efficiency, a testing ground for new materials, and a place where big-name designers can showcase their creativity. A host of new and exciting trends continue to guide the transformation of the bathroom, placing it at the very forefront of intelligent, contemporary design. COLOUR ME HAPPY Bathrooms used to be characterised by their distinct lack of colour, but the tide has turned. Bright and vibrant colour hues are making their mark, replacing the muted, understated tones of old. Responding to the need to create increasingly design-orientated products, Spanish bathroom company Roca’s Khroma collection of bathroom accessories is available in passion red, street and silver grey, and oxygen blue, and Villeroy & Boch Loop & Friends washbasin line includes trendy shades of Espresso, a strong brown, and Cassis, a striking violet. When it comes to colour, black is also popular so don’t be afraid to use it throughout your bathroom. Laufen identified this trend early on and responded by launching its Ilbagnoalessi Dot range in matte black ceramic. Created by Dutch architect Wiel Arets, the Ilbagnoalessi Dot bathroom is characterised by its clear, marchitectonic traits. Duravit also relaunched one of its most successful collections, Vero, in an eye-catching, high-gloss black. With its classically angular design, the collection is a pioneer of purist form. Also picking up on the monochromatic is Cosmic, with their black and white gloss finishes for its Flow faucet collection.

MATERIAL GAINS Bathroom manufacturers are also experimenting with a growing range of materials and textures. Zaninelli Bagni offers a collection carved from natural stone. The CNC Collection was designed by Mr Smith Studio in Milan and includes single and double washbasins, countertops, built-in or floor standing basins, shower receptors and bathtubs. Meanwhile, Ceramica Cielo extended its Jungle collection of decorated bathroom fittings with new iguana, pony and crocodile inspired products. Additions to the ten-strong collection include iguana in white, the black and piebald pony, Cocò Blanc, or white crocodile, and Cocò Retro, a vintage grey crocodile effect.

EXTREME COMFORT As the personal wellbeing trend becomes increasingly prevalent, companies are coming up with increasingly creative ways to transform the bathroom into a private retreat. This is particularly notable when it comes to the showering experience. Kohler’s Katalyst, a shower that simulates the large, heavy drops of a summer downpour is constructed from solid brass. Katalyst spray technology utilises a unique air induction ball joint designed to generate large water droplets that provide users with an intense hydrotherapy experience. The aesthetic quality of fittings has also increased radically. Manufacturers are focusing on creating finely-crafted, sculptural elements that introduce a touch of glamour. Zucchetti’s Bellagio series, available from Bagno Design, is inspired by an aristocratic, dolce vita style, crafted from chrome-plated brass with Satin, Tuscan and Platinum finishes. Tiles also create a dramatic addition to the bathroom setting. Glamour tiles by Kronos add a rich flavour to any space. Opulent tiles can be set against simply-designed bathrooms, such as the KS collection by Italian company Karol. This bathroom furniture collection brings back retro simplicity and is available in a range of fresh colours. SUSTAINABLY SOUND Arguably the most important trend to have an impact on bathroom design is sustainability. Bathroom companies are placing sustainability at the forefront of their agendas and investing in developing products that are long lasting, efficient and environmentally friendly. Kohler Vas ceramic faucet uses nearly half the water of traditional faucets and offers a return on investment in less than four years. It consumes just 5.68L of water per minute, compared to traditional faucets that consume an average n8.32L/min, reducing water consumption by approximately 45%. The base solid-colour model has a pitcher-like vitreous china spout that provides graceful water flow, and a sculpted, curved handle that resembles a drooping flower stem. The Vas is also available in three painted, high-design pieces, Cerana, Imperial Blue and Silkweave.

8 TIPS. • A good extractor fan is essential for keeping the air moisture free. • A bath in the bedroom works best if there is another bathroom available elsewhere, especially if a couple get up or go to bed at separate times. • Stepping out of a bath into a chilly room isn’t pleasant, and a large bedroom will need larger radiators. Underfloor heating is a good choice as it will also dry and spillages. • Re-routing the plumbing and drainage for a bath shouldn’t been too difficult but it does help if there is an existing bathroom nearby and you will need to accept some upheaval and expense. • The bath does need to be kept pristine to make its presence in your sleeping space a pleasure.

RE-IMAGINED CHAIRS. Designed by Studiomama. Re-imagined Chairs by London-based Studiomama is a project born out of questioning resourcefulness and attitudes towards waste. It builds on the interests in expediency and re-using the existing, and speaks of the ability to see the potential in the unwanted, by encouraging users to re-look at unwanted furniture.

WELL PROVEN CHAIR (left) Designed by James Shaw and Marjan van Aubel The Well Proven Chair is the result of research into the development of wood chips. The investigation began with the discovery that products and furniture made from wood generate between 50-80% waste in the form of sawdust, chippings and shavings. By combining these waste products with bio-resin, it turns to a porridge-like mixture and expands into a solid. With the addition of water or increased temperatures it can expand up to 700%. This material is then used to create the seat shell combined with a simple but beautiful leg structure of turned ash.

HOME DÉCOR & DESIGN CORNICHES Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra The idea for Corniches arose from the need for small storage spaces to keep small items. Corniches are neither regular shelves nor simple horizontal surfaces, but rather individual, isolated protrusions in the environments that we create. Corniches are a new way to use the wall in living spaces.

LIQUID GLACIAL TABLE Designed by Zaha Hadid The Liquid Glacial design embeds surface complexity and refraction within a powerful fluid dynamic. The elementary geometry of the flat table top appears transformed from static to fluid by the subtle waves and ripples evident below the surface, while the table’s legs seem to pour from the horizontal in a vortex of frozen water.

GRAVITY STOOL Designed by Jolan Van Der Wiel Jolan Van Der Wiel developed a ‘magnet machine’, whereby he positions magnetic fields above and below a container of polarized material containing metal shavings. In order to form and determine the shapes of his furniture pieces, the hanging units are pulled down and then released, in which the substance follows, drawn upwards by magnetic force, letting gravity determine the shape of the stool.

ENGINEERING TEMPORALITY Designed by Studio Markunpoika Using small circular tubular steel to semi-cover over existing objects including cabinets and chairs, Tuomas Markunpoika burnt away the sculptural piece, leaving the charred steel structure behind. Inspired by the designer’s Grandmother’s Alzheimers, Engineering Temporality evokes the ideas of vanishing memory.

Turn to Stone

BEAUTIFUL AND HARDWEARING, STONE IS PERFECT FOR TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY FLOORS, WALLS AND COUNTERTOPS.

58

| JANUARY FEBRUARY

Millions of years in the making, thousand of years in human use and hundreds of years in our houses, stone is a fabulous material for floors, walls and counter-tops. Valued for its durability and natural beauty, it is the flooring material that grows old most gracefully and the shear variety of textures and colours available means that each floor is unique. Tactile and tough, yet bearing all the hallmarks of luxury, no wonder stone is the material of choice for many leading designers. Granite has been a popular material for some time, but the options are now broadening to embrace slate and limestone, as well as exotic marbles. Composite surfaces, which contain up to 96 per cent stone, offer greater design flexibility still, as they are more uniform in colour and easy to repair. Whether you want to see all the imperfections of that a stone has acquired over time or a sleek, unblemished surface, there’s a stone to suit everyone. Exposed natural stone and brickwork walls look

most effective when left rustic and untreated in a room furnished with contemporary pieces. Architectural stonework will enhance will enhance fireplaces while in period properties granite lintels lend drama above doorways and fireplaces. When choosing stone, consider how it will work in the space on a practical and an aesthetic level. While colour, pattern and finish may be at the forefront of your mind when choosing stone, do consider the practical questions first. Does your budget stretch to underfloor heating, as stone can feel cold particularly in the bathroom and bedroom? Do you have small children who might find the surface hard and unrelenting? Natural stone with a highly polished surface will bring to light a whole variety of colours and structure but will often not have the necessary non-slip properties that are needed in a bathroom. A stone floor is a large investment, so think it through. But there are many positive sides to stone. Virtually indestructible, it is easy to clean if sealed properly, allergy-friendly, and a good choice for

set areas as it withstands damp and flooding. It is a natural material that comes in a vast choice of colours and finishes, from pale marbles to black slates, and a surprisingly lively colour palette in between with yellows, blues, greens and pinks created by mineral content. It’s widely accepted that stone is expected to have natural imperfections and this simply adds to its beauty — look for grain, veining and even fossils — and you can alter the character of any stone with a finish such as a high-sheen polish, an understated matt or even a weathered effect. Stone floors such as granite or marble look best when the pattern, texture and scale of the stone

are in proportion to the space and in keeping with the architecture. The bigger the slab or tile is, the better it will show off the material’s natural characteristics. Slate is very identifiable flooring. Although cold to touch, its appearance is enhanced by the warmth of its natural colourations. A single slate tile can have a large diversity of colour present — from browns and ochre shades to the catch phrase “slate grey”. It is an economic and non-porous alternative to granite and marble, is relatively stain resistant and can be left without a sealant. Amazingly, scratches and stains can be removed with sandpaper. Placed within modern architecture,

slate definitely takes on a contemporary look. Zodiaq is like a natural stone but with none of the imperfections. Made from 96 per cent quartz bonded with resin, it has the advantages of a homogeneous surface that provides a uniform colour. It is also user-friendly and still looks pristine years after installation. The laying of stone offers further decorative opportunities. Large tiles or a mix of sixes look dramatic while herringbone or basket-weave patterns or travertine mosaics create a softer effect. Finally, despite its reputation for being cold underfoot, stone is a great insulator, keeping cool in summer and retaining ambient heat in winter.

The Beauty of Travertine CONCEPT BUILDING IN ESTEPONA As an overall subset of building material, natural stone has at least two striking characteristics that seem to contradict each other. First, the use and popularity of natural stone surfaces has been consistent for thousands of years, and across many cultures and traditions. And second, natural stone fits in seamlessly with modern design. This is a contradiction that you can really appreciate, proving that sometimes it’s the materials we’ve counted on all along that make the most sense in the spaces which are the most important to us. Travertine floor tiles come in a range of colours, textures and finishes; from textured and pitted rustic travertine tiles through to the glass-like finish of ivory vein cut travertine tiles. For a more traditional stone floor, a light tumbled or noce travertine tile can perfectly complement original features and furniture. With the pitted surface and weathered edges, tumbled travertine tiles look centuries old and create an authentic feel, making tumbled travertine tiles ideal for renovations when a certain warm, inviting effect is what you want. The sleeker filled, honed and straight-cut types of travertine tile can create a more contemporary look. Honed travertine tiles can create a look which is similar to that of limestone tiles, but feature a more patterned finish, with veining in the travertine tiles ranging from cinnamon to quartz in colour. With the range of travertine tile colours and finishes available, natural travertine tiles can suit any decor. Travertine tiles add substantial value to your home and once sealed and grouted, travertine tiles can withstand busy family life with ease. Our wide range of premium grade travertine, limestone, marble and slate are available to view at our showroom located at Estepona Polígono. Over the course of time its colour will deepen and its patina soften into a well-worn but beautiful surface. • High-gloss stones will highlight dust. A more popular choice is honed stone with a matt finish that is tactile and doesn’t show fingerprints. • Make sure softer sedimentary stones, such as limestone, have been sealed before installation and follow the protective guidelines to the letter. • Avoid abrasive detergents or scouring pads; clean instead with simple soap and water. • Major stains and scratches can often be repaired by a specialist. Whether pile or flat weave, oriental, Persian, kilim or Aubusson, jute, wool, silk or nylon, woven, knotted or tufted, area rugs pull the room together, creating a focal point, bringing spots of colour and grouping seating in a natural, fluid way. Designers advise matching the colours in your furniture to the colours in your carpet for an integrated look and regularly switching area rugs to mark the seasons. Roll up your light-coloured jute rugs and weaves when summer’s over and replace them with deeper, softer and more luxurious carpets in richer winter colours found in oriental and Persian rugs. The lightweight summer sisal rug can serve as the base for a richer-toned rug placed over it on a diagonal. For summer you might select very reasonable sea grass woven carpets and for winter something like dark damasks and beautiful Persians. Switch out white or soft pastel throws and sofa cushions in favour of more moody winter colours such as blues and purples to dramatically change the space. Popular

contemporary colours these days are still oranges and greys as well as blues and greys with a pop of bright yellow. An intriguing newcomer, a round, wool felt rug called the Season Carpet, by Norwegian designer Siren Elise Wilhemsen (www.sirenelisewilhelmsen.com), responds to temperature shifts. Each has three heat-sensitive pigments, which change colours at different temperatures. For example, red turns to yellow at 81 F, blue turns to green at 64 F, blue becomes mint at 59 F. Keep a close eye on trends in carpet design. FaII colours for 2012 focused on rich, natural tones such as browns, reds, deep blues and deep greys. Last year there was lots of tone on tone, mixing beige and grey, rust and grey, blue and grey. They’re still keeping with complementary colours: orange and blue and more muted tones. Especially luxurious are the mixes of wool and silk, which are highly reflective and feel great on your feet. The depths of colours are HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

covering. So it’s no surprise that the choice of materials is equally exotic and sophisticated. Fine wools, silks and chenille yarns all feature prominently, with metallic lurex yarns worked into the weave to give a glitter effect. Pattern designs for rugs, fitted carpets and resilient floor coverings feature rich mosaics, baroque floral motifs and lavish ornamentation. Antique patterns, often referencing old wall frescoes and Gobelin tapestry motifs, hark back to the distant past. Native Craft: Simplicity with rustic Charm In today’s fast-moving world, dominated by technology and virtual experiences,it’s important to reconnect with the simpler things in life, and to rediscover honest, old-fashioned values like warmth, intimacy and authenticity. There’s a real need to create oases of calm where we can get back to nature - away

from all the pressures and stress of modern living. And nature should not only be visible to the eye, but also palpable to the touch. Which is why surface textures are so important in rugs and fitted carpets. The haptic experience is key here. Wool, linen, hemp and recycled materials are used to give a coarse texture and finish to woven and knotted carpets. And nature has the colours to suit. These are generally warm, earthy tones such as beige, brown, russet, orange and ochre. More vibrant colours such as bottle green, turquoise, red and yellow also feature strongly in ethnic designs. Soft Coolness: A fresh Look to modern Living Concrete, steel and lots of glass: modern architecture likes to play it cool. Bright, light and airy - that’s the signature look of contemporary urban spaces. At the same time all this austere coolness is alleviated by non-colours such as

white, pale grey, putty, beige and delicate pastel tones such as greyish-mint, sky-blue, and varying shades of pink. Plain rugs - and increasingly plain fitted carpets too - are back in fashion, short-pile for the most part, but deep-pile in some cases. A new trend is the juxtaposition of several large areas of plain colour, differing only slightly in shade to create an overall effect of quiet harmony. Another key trend is colour blocking. For those who find the soft colour gradients too tame, strong colours are a good alternative choice. Graphic and geometric patterns, stripes and also classic weaves from the fashion textile sector such as Vichy check, hounds tooth check and Prince of Wales check are as popular as ever. Designs featuring lettering and calligraphy are also part of the “Soft Coolness” look. Bleached out Oriental carpets form an intriguing contrast with the purist lines of contemporary furniture. ALVORADA

BRASILIA

One of the pre-eminent rock musicians of our time, Lenny Kravitz is an icon whose bold, channelling sound has transcended genre, style, race, culture and class. His musical success has afforded him many opportunities in which to fulfill his creative vision. Founded by Lenny Kravitz in 2003, Kravitz Design Inc. is the result of the artist’s desire to expand his creative energies outside the worlds of music and entertainment. Located in New York’s SoHo neighborhood, the design firm’s aesthetic translates to a diverse set of circumstances through its use of superior materials, unusual textures, and classic compositions. In 2005 and 2006, Swarovski selected Kravitz Design to contribute two breathtaking chandeliers to its Crystal Palace Collection. “Design has always been a great interest of mine. Even as a child, it was very important as to how my room was arranged and what items were in it. When I started having my own homes, I found that many of the furnishings and accessories that I was envisioning for the space did not exist. So I began to make them myself,” says Lenny Kravitz. The firm’s most recent endeavours include multiple large-scale hotel projects, Tropicalismo, a partnership with Flavor Paper, involving a unique collection of hand-screened wallpapers, a wall tile collection for Lea Ceramiche and a collaboration with none other than famed design personality Philippe Stark on a new rendition of his Mademoiselle chair.

THE GARDEN

Use paths to make your garden interesting

68

| JANUARY FEBRUARY

BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE

www.gardenspain.com

Why are so many gardens designed with straight garden paths? Why is the path around so many new houses laid up against the wall allowing no possibility for shrub and perennial beds? Why are paths in many gardens onlyconstructed using one surface rather than different surfaces in various areas to add contrast and interest? Historically, most main pathways in gardens were straight in order to set-up a washing line alongside and to avoid getting feet wet from recent rain. That constraint went years ago with the arrival of rotary drying frames and tumble driers, so why not get more creative in the layout and construction of pathways and create impact in a garden? The first thing is to recognise is why do we have paths in gardens. The following reasons are extracted from our books. • To enable people of all ages to move around the garden easily and safely in any weather. • To move things around the garden without the fear of tripping or strains. • To link different areas and features in an interesting way. • To move rainwater around the garden to areas where most needed. • To create interesting and often unexpected internal and external vistas. • To make a small garden seem larger by varying the width of paths from near the house to outer areas. A straight path which narrows 20 percent from beginning to end can work wonders, as can curving and snaking paths. • To link terraces. A network of paths can reduce planting areas and decrease garden maintenance. Indeed see terraces as wide paths with a number of connecting paths to other terraces and garden features. • To provide a moisture reservoir and shade for the roots of plants lining paths. • To establish a formal, informal or mixed garden style. Beyond designing a network of pathways the next thing to decide on is surfaces and edgings. These days the choice is vast, ranging from coloured concrete to natural stone slabs, stone chippings to sand, low growing herbs to natural or artificial grass, bark chippings or compost between rows of vegetables to formal stone cobbles or bricks. Remember not all paths need to be continuous for stepping stones laid in

If you are having a new house constructed decide on the network of paths around the house while the house is being built and get the builder to lay down what you want for an elegant garden rather than an easy concrete path attached to the house.

grass or to add interest in low use areas with stone chippings. In many gardens edgings to paths add interest and formality, and are useful in keeping stone chippings from spreading outside the intended path areas and in controlling the torrent velocity of rain water running off paths in to planted areas. Pathway edging can range from small rocks to terracotta edgings, wooden slats to small plants and edging bricks to narrow concrete edging slabs. Paths are also a means to reach all areas of your garden. Recently two people sent in questions to us related to problems with fruit trees. When we asked for more information it was not available as the writers indicated that they rarely visit those areas of the garden. Look at your own garden, would more features, special plantings and seats with pleasing vistas prompt you to walk your network of paths more often or do you need to add new paths? Structural changes in your garden, including paths are best made during the cooler months, and fast changes can be made by using stone chippings laid between small rock edgings, as they can always be covered with stone slabs on concrete later. The fast route was an idea we had in parts of our garden 20 years ago with mature stone chipping paths laid on solid plastic sheeting, or in one part on overlapping supermarket plastic bags to minimise the cost! These paths still exist and require little maintenance and weeding. So, if you have terraces upstairs, go up there now and look down at the garden and answer the following questions. Are there paths that go to all parts of the garden? Are they too formal or too higgledy-piggledy? Are there interesting plantings on both sides of most lengths of paths? Would it be worth the effort to make some changes before Easter once the winter cut back is complete? Place them on a baking sheet, and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Put the chocolates into 3 separate heatproof bowls with the shortening (evenly divided). Fill 3 medium saucepans with a couple inches of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Turn off the heat; set the bowls of chocolate over the water to melt. Stir until smooth. Let cool for about 5 minutes. Line a sheet pan with waxed paper. Holding the strawberry by the stem, dip the fruit into the chocolate, leave about 1/3 of an inch uncovered (on stem end), lift and twist slightly, letting any excess chocolate fall back into the bowl. Moscow Delicatessen, a Marbella-based company recently celebrated 2 years of purveying gastronomic delights from former Soviet countries in 21 outlets in Spain as the Russian-speaking population continues to grow. With a range of over 200 authentic food and drink products to choose from, Moscow Delicatessen distribute to various branches of El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Alcampo and Supersol. As co-director Masha Malka explains, “The mission of Moscow Delicatessen is to bring to the broad former Soviet people a taste of home in Spain as well as introducing Russian food to the Spanish national and international communities living in Spain. The Russian community itself is buoyant: NASHDOM, the Association of Russian-speaking people in Marbella, estimates the total number of Russian-speaking residents in Spain to be approximately 250,000 people. Some 20,000 are residing in the province of Málaga. RUSSIAN CAVIAR - EXCLUSIVE TO MOSCOW DELICATESSEN The only suppliers of Russian foodstuffs to supermarket chains in Spain, Moscow Delicatessen purvey a number of products in exclusivity, including the only red caviar (salmon roe) actually from Russia. “Most of the caviar on sale in Spain is from Alaska, but the red caviar we sell is sourced in Habarovsk in Russia and our clients can’t get enough of it” says Masha Malka. Other staples include a variety of smoked fish including herrings, pickles of all varieties, cold cuts of meat, salami, Russian salad or olivie made with sausage or chicken rather than tuna; beetroot salad and plenty of vodka, naturally. “Russian’s also love Prianiki, a type of gingerbread made from a centuries old recipe, as well as Georgian mineral Water Borjomi, which is one of our best sellers, thanks to its known healing qualities,” affirms Malka. It is not just the former Soviet residents in Spain who have a taste for the Russian delights offered at Moscow Delicatessen outlets; people of all nationalities are tapping into the delicious and nutritious taste of the former Soviet countries. and chill for 30 minutes. In a large frying pan, heat remaining oil over medium heat. Add crab cakes and cook for about 3 minutes or until browned, turn and brown other side. Serve on a bed of greens and sliced oranges drizzled with dressing.

Guacamole Auténtico A guacamole recipe so real, you can almost hear the mariachis singing. (Serves: 8 Time: 10 mins) INGREDIENTS 4 ripe, fresh Hass avocados, peeled and seeded 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1 ripe, medium Roma tomato, seeded, diced 1/2 cup minced sweet white onion 2 serrano chiles, seeded and minced 1/2 cup cilantro leaves chopped 4 tbsp. fresh lime juice Hot pepper sauce Sea salt, to taste White pepper, to taste Cut avocado in large chunks and mash coarsely in large bowl with a fork. Add remaining ingredients and blend gently. Taste and adjust seasoning with more pepper sauce, salt and pepper if desired.

Avocado Chocolate Mousse Fresh Hass avocados help make this dark chocolate mousse rich and creamy. (Serves: 6 Time: 5 mins) INGREDIENTS 1 (16-oz.) container low fat cottage cheese 1/2 pt. powdered sugar 2 ripe, fresh Hass avocados, peeled and seeded

3/4 cup bittersweet dark chocolate, chopped Place cottage cheese in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth, about 1 minute. Add sugar and avocado and puree until avocado is completely incorporated and mixture is very smooth. Set aside. Place chocolate in a glass (or microwave safe) bowl and heat on high at 30-second intervals, stirring in between intervals until chocolate has melted and is smooth. With food processor running, pour chocolate through feed tube and blend with avocado mixture until completely incorporated. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Serving Suggestions: Make this look ultra fancy and garnish with fresh raspberries and shavings of dark chocolate. Did you know avocados can be frozen? Pureed avocados can be frozen and used in guacamole dips, dressings and spread on sandwiches. Here’s how … Wash the outside of the avocados thoroughly. Cut and peel. Place in a food processor or blender. Add a ratio of one tablespoon of an acidic agent like lemon or lime juice for each avocado you are freezing. Puree until smooth. Place the pureed avocado into an air-tight container. Leave 1/2 to 1 inch of headspace in the container to allow for expansion. Close your container tightly and freeze. Frozen avocado puree must be used within 4-5 months of freezing. * Large avocados are recommended for these recipes. A large avocado averages about 8 ounces. If using smaller or larger size avocados adjust the quantity accordingly. The Hass Avocado is easily identified by its oval shape, the bumpy, pebbled texture of its skin and the dark green to purple-black colour indicating it’s ripe and ready to enjoy.

5 Essential Flat-Belly Foods

THE MORE OF THESE BULGE BATTLERS YOU EAT, THE BETTER YOUR CHANCES OF KEEPING THOSE ABS FLAT.

QUINOA Per 1/4 cup: 170 calories 2.5 g fat 7 g protein 3 g fiber For starters, anytime you choose a whole-grain product over one made from nutrient-stripped white flour, you wage war against belly fat. Researchers found that dieters who ate wholegrains lost twice as much belly fat as those who stuck to white-flour products — even though they’d consumed the same number of calories. Labelled as a superfood, quinoa is a complete protein, containing all eight of the essential amino acids giving it twice the belly-filling protein as regular cereal grains, fewer glucose-raising carbohydrates, and even a handful of healthy fats. So start your day off with a cup of cooked quinoa combined with a 1/2 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of blueberries — microwave for 60 seconds, and you have a delicious (and slimming) alternative to your traditional oatmeal.

GREEN TEA (0 calories)

AVOCADO

Catechins, the powerful antioxidants found in green tea, are known to increase metabolism. A study by Japanese researchers found that participants who consumed 690 milligrams of catechins from green tea daily had significantly lower body mass indexes and smaller waist measurements than those in a control group. It’s safe to say that green tea is one of the best beverages for your health.

Per avocado: 322 calories 29 g fat (4 g saturated, 20 g monounsaturated) 13 g fibre 4 g protein Never fear this full-fat Mediterranean-diet staple: It’s teeming with healthy monounsaturated fats (also found in olive oil), which have been linked to lowered LDL cholesterol levels and weight loss — so go ahead and indulge!

KEFIR Per cup: 174 calories 2 g fat 14 g protein 3 g fibre Think of kefir as drinkable yogurt, or an extra-thick, protein-packed smoothie. In either case, this delicious dairy product is a belly-blasting essential. Beyond the satiety-inducing protein, the probiotics in kefir may also speed weight loss. British scientists found that these active organisms boosted the breakdown of fat molecules in mice, preventing the rodents from gaining weight. The researchers still need to prove the finding in humans, but there’s no danger in downing probiotic-packed product.

“Matcha green tea has been drank for centuries by Buddhist monks, but studies are now suggesting that matcha has more potent antioxidant effects compared to traditional green tea”, explain Vitalife Teas. The University of Colorado discovered, in the Journal of Chromatography 2003, that matcha green tea (a powdered version of green tea - as sold by Vitalife Teas) contains 137x the antioxidant EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate, a type of catechin, found in green tea and cocoa) compared to traditional steeped-leaf green

EGGS Per 1 large scrambled egg: 102 calories 7 g fat (2 g saturated) 7 g protein A British study found that people who increased the percentage of protein-based calories in their diet burned 71 more calories a day. Jumpstart your metabolism as soon as you wake up with a protein-rich breakfast of scrambled eggs.

teas – making it a great way to detoxify and rejuvenate. It is basically a powdered green tea, ground on traditional stone mills, after being grown under bamboo sheets to limit its exposure to sunlight and force the plant to fill with chlorophyll and work harder to photosynthesise. This chlorophyll has reported health benefits in itself, and gives matcha green tea its distinctive, vivid green colour when mixed with warm water for consumption. www.vitalifeteas.com

Murano Resort Paris Light is the key design element at the Murano Paris, be it lighting sequences in guest rooms, pinpricks of cobalt blue in corridors, or whirling swirls of colour projected onto the bar wall. Throughout the hotel, brilliant blues meet hazy pinks, blazing yellows meet soft lilacs, vermilions and violets meet amaranths and apricots. Designer duo Christine Derory and Raymond Morel followed three main principles when creating the artfully playful Murano: simplicity of form, quality of material, and depth of colour. Design collaborations with Starck, Dirade, Mob Apart and LRD assured the highest standard of furniture and finishes, while commissioned works by artisans provided a unique, handcrafted touch. Though the building’s 19th century exterior was retained, the inside was turned on its head.

Behind the unadorned white facade now lies a futuristic ground floor filled with stainless steel, frosted windows and glass sculptures by artist Vincent Breed. Fabric screens hang from the ceiling of a long entrance corridor whose white marble floor is scattered with padded silver chairs. Upstairs dark hallways are lined with trompe l’oeil wallpaper, and heavy room-doors evoke images of butcher’s shop deep-freezers – making it all the more fantastic to discover the bright, airy rooms that hide behind them. The rooms are blissful affairs with white matte walls, luminous cubes, modern paintings, pop art objects, layered curtains and moulded glass desks. Bathrooms are sleekly crafted in black and white, comprised mostly of stone, slate, chrome and ebony. Downstairs, the restaurant, an astute display of baroque and contemporary design,

features soft-cushioned armchairs and neon up-lit glassware arranged beneath a maze of stalactites suspended from the ceiling. The lounge boasts an equally wild aesthetic embodied by tulip-shaped armchairs, deep red carpets and immense padded walls. The black slate bar is low and long, lit up by a whirling fusion of colours projected onto the wall behind it. Two young chefs, working in harmony, have accepted the challenge of heading the kitchen of the Murano Resort. Profiting from the vision of these diverse talents, the Murano proposes a healthy cuisine, refreshingly light, delicate and creative, with particular focus towards vegetarians. Glamorous tulip-shaped armchairs, tables and barstools in Inox, distinctive benches, deep red carpets and giant padded walls make for a bar at the Murano brimming with modern elegance and comfort. A bar of two façades, during the day open framed windows, flooding natural light, classical and jazz music and at night veiled windows, flirting colours and a program of live music. Situated on the edge of the Marais district, the Murano Resort is a stone’s throw from the chic Rue Charlot and Rue Vieille du Temple. The neighbouring architecture reflects all the charm and hidden treasures of historic Paris, escaping from the sprawling nature of the urban form. Within minutes the Le Cirque D’Hiver, Théatre Dejazet, Picasso Museum, Opéra Bastille, Place des Vosges, Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée Carnavalet and the Canal St Martin. PalazzinaG, Venice, Italy IN THE EPICENTRE OF VENICE, ARGUABLY EUROPE’S MOST MYSTERIOUS AND EXHILARATING CITY, PALAZZINAG GRACEFULLY SITS ON THE EDGE OF THE GRAND CANAL. 90

| JANUARY FEBRUARY

PalazzinaG’s classical 16th century frame, once home to generations of nobility and haute-bourgeois families, is at the site of what was, several centuries earlier, a Roman bath. Venice, a city throbbing with the echoes of melancholic grandeur, calls for new structures to pay apt homage to its historical aesthetic roots but also implores designers and architects to breathe new life into it. This impressive specimen, the first hotel in Italy designed by multifarious originator Philippe Starck, performs exactly these tasks, and does so to perfection. The commitment to maintaining the classical skeleton extends to a restored central colonnade and modernized columns throughout the building, which is otherwise taken to extremes in abstraction and geometry, contrasting rigid contemporary standards with those similarly rigid classical elements. Its 21 rooms including 5 suite/apartments boast canal views and “tailor made” luxury – most elements in the hotel are made to measure by the French designer extraordinaire. Each guest is invited to experience his or her ideal of luxury with 24hour

service aimed to fulfill desires and bring the fantasy of Venetian life to fruition. The decorative elements and materials generally used around the PalazzinaG, such as deep mahogany, rich bricks and “terrazzo”, melt into the elegance and fluidity of the contemporary design into which they are entrenched. The PalazzinaG is ideally situated in a 16th-century building directly on Venice’s Grand Canal, just minutes from Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge as well as art world gems such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gallerie dell’Accademia. Chef Luigi Frascella is in charge of the PG’s Restaurant’s wonderful show kitchen which Philippe Starck intended to be a modern re-interpretation of the traditional venetian “cicchetteria/osteria”. The kitchen allows guests to admire him and his team putting together typical Venetian style dishes which focus on a simple, tasteful and elegant approach. Every dish is homemade with ingredients brought in fresh everyday from the close by Rialto market.

The Vine Hotel, Madeira A VISIT TO THE “ISLAND OF ETERNAL SPRING” WOULDN’T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A LUXURIOUS STAY AT THE VINE, LOCATED IN THE HEART OF FUNCHAL, THE PICTURESQUE CAPITAL OF MADEIRA. 92

| JANUARY FEBRUARY

Generous space and pared-down sophistication are the trademarks of the property, which takes its name and inspiration from the island’s world-famous Madeira wine. Interiors reflect the vision of award-winning Portuguese designer Nini Andrade Silva, whose 79 rooms and suites offer the ideal blend of soothing neutral colour palettes and breathtaking city or harbour views. Grey, green, purple and brown are the dominating colours of the hotel, representing the four different seasons and the maturation of a grape throughout the year. Each floor is designed in a different colour: The second floor is green for spring, the third floor is purple for summer, the forth floor is grey for winter and the fifth floor is held in brown colours, representing autumn. In-room check-in and a welcome massage ensure that guests can immediately start rejuvenating. Vine therapy treatments at the spa, using local ingredients and famous grape varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet, will detox and revitalize the body while relaxing and refreshing the mind. Meanwhile, tantalizing culinary creations envisioned by three star Michelin chef Antoine West-

ermann at the rooftop restaurant UVA (Portuguese for “grape”) tickle the palate with a fusion of French cuisine complemented by the use of savoury local ingredients. Gourmet dishes like roast pigeon wings and thighs stuffed with a vegetable tagine or Guinea-fowl with pig’s head stuffing, served with choucroute and potato gnocchi. To complete the gourmet experience, guests can chose from a variety of delicious desserts like an Assiette of 4 chocolate desserts or his famous Macaroons. Social life at the hotel revolves around the lobby lounge with all-day dining, as well as 360º – the open-air bar with heated rooftop swimming pool – which offers, as its name suggests, spectacular panoramic views. With its unique location in the South of Madeira, in the heart of the historic centre of Funchal and close to the cathedral Sé, The Vine is an ideal starting point for a city tour or an island sightseeing trip. Close-by are also the marina and several of the island’s golf courses. Fashionistas will love the Dolce Vita Shopping Centre with its 80 shops next to the hotel.

La Banane, St. Barts

94

| JANUARY FEBRUARY

There are places you don’t happen upon just by chance. Undreamt places, concealed somewhere at the other end of the world. Places whose secrecy alone justifies the journey, where warm and welcoming serenity, appreciable discretion and endless sunshine make crossing the ocean worthwhile. La Banane is one such secluded spot. Hidden in the heart of the Caribbean on the Island of Saint Barth and just a few meters away from the Lorient beach, this hotel has a legendary past peopled with stars who, for a long time, were faithful visitors to the most Parisian nightclub in the French West Indies. Like a Phoenix, a little shy about being too well known and once the hotspot for wild parties thrown by the entertainment world legend Jean Marie Rivière, the hotel has now reinvented itself. Here, time is no longer what we are usually accustomed to. Somewhere between its past heritage and dynamic present, la Banane likes to mix the genres, merge eras, styles and personalities. This hotel’s cool vibe of the 1950s has furni-

ture designed by Pierre Jeanneret for the city of Chandigarh (capital of Punjab), the pieces signed by Charlotte Perriand and Jean Royère or Serge Mouille make each space – bedroom, bar or suite – as stylish as it is cozy. Relying as much on secrecy as on generosity, this very private 9 bedroom compound is surrounded by lush tropical gardens filled with bougainvillea, hibiscus, fragrant frangipani, palm trees and fittingly banana trees, highlighted by the vivid frescos by artist Cyprien Chabert. The bungalows feature draped, four-poster king beds under whirling ceiling fans, a striking white-on-white palette with bright pops of colours, refurbished antiques, unique pieces and objects d’art. Each bungalow at Le Banana is named after an artist, well-known modernist architects, designer or craftsman, ranging from Hungarian designer Mathieu Mategot (1910-2001) to American painter and sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976), and each piece of furniture is individually identified and its origin and design explained, so that the guests can appreciate the pieces that surround them.

La Banane has no restaurant of its own, but the African-themed French dining lounge next door, K’Fé Massai, is one of St Barth’s finest eateries and provides rooms service to the hotel. Whether it’s about the past, the present or a story to be told, la Banane is entirely devoted to a handful of privileged people. Sheltered from view, proud of its legendary past yet enamoured of modernity, far from the world’s hustle and bustle, this is the place to settle in comfortably and relax. Feel at home while surrendering yourself to the caressing breezes and melodious song of the birds of paradise.

It utilises the mechanical components of the 458 Italia, including a 4.5-litre V8 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, however many of the car’s technical details are considered confidential.

The car is part of Ferrari’s One-Off Program, which was set up in 2007 to create unique models following demand from customers, and was designed by ‘Centro Stile Ferrari’ in collaboration with the Pininfarina styling house and engineers from Modena. Clapton can now add the Ferrari SP12 EC to his collection of Italian horsepower, which includes an Enzo, 599 Fiorano and a 250 GT Lusso. Clapton is reported to have spent more than £3million building his dream Ferrari.

AEROSMITH FRONTMAN STEVEN TYLER’S HENNESSEY VENOM GT SPYDER Hennessey Performance, the Texas company known around the world for building some of the fastest and most powerful cars on earth, recently showed their 2013 Venom GT Spyder supercar. The 1200 horsepower, 1200 kilo, mid-engine monster will offer an extra dose of wind and sound when driven without the top as a removable hardtop and soft-top roof option for their Texas-built supercar. The vehicle is owned by Aerosmith lead singer and former American Idol judge, Steven Tyler who splurge $1.1 million on the first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder last year, and the fact that Tyler also bought the roofless version means he’s in the world’s fastest street legal convertible. The 2013 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder sports a twin-turbo Hennessey-built 7.0-liter V-8 producing 1244 bhp @ 6600 rpm, making it the most powerful roadster in the world. Hennessey says the car will hit 200 mph in

less than 16 seconds, several seconds more quickly than its closest rival, the Bugatti Veyron Vitesse, making it the quickest accelerating supercar in the world. This upcoming supercar will impress with the same carbon fiber structure as its predecessor, but will have a more attractive rear wing, a double bubble roof for additional headroom and doors similar to those available on the Lamborghini models, which is quite a premiere for this tuning company. Another exterior change made by Hennessey on the 2013 Venom GT is related to the replacement of the Lotus headlamps with a version based on a more original and stylish design. Only five Venom GTs are built each model year. 2013 production is sold out and the company has a waiting list for 2014 deliveries. With a price of EUR 745,098 for the coupe EUR 745,098 and EUR 862,745 for the Spyder, the Venom GT is not only the most powerful roadster available on the market today, but it is also one of the rarest and the company plans to limit production to just twenty-nine examples. www.venomgt.com

ART & CULTURE THINK PINK CHARITY EVENT RAISES 8,500€ FOR CUDECA

Picasso’s Life Inspires Two Films “33 DÍAS” and “LA BANDA PICASSO” Two events in Picasso’s life, a quarter of a century apart, are at the heart of new movies by two of Spain’s veteran directors. Carlos Saura is preparing “33 Días” (“33 Days”), which will focus on the artist’s emotional upheaval in 1937, when he painted “Guernica,” his harrowing representation of the bombing of a Basque town that has come to symbolize the outrage of warfare. And in the autumn Fernando Colomo is to release “La Banda Picasso” (“Picasso’s Gang”) about how Picasso found himself entangled in the stunning theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in Paris in 1911. While the Mona Lisa was eventually recovered and found to have been stolen by a Louvre employee, Picasso was initially suspected of having taken part in the theft, which affected his relationship with some of the other artists working in Paris. The two films, which will be in Spanish and French, are initially scheduled for European distribution. Coincidentally, each movie has a lead actor who comes from Málaga, Picasso’s birthplace. Mr. Colomo cast Ignacio Mateos, who has worked for the Théâtre du Soleil in Paris. Mr. Saura’s Picasso is Antonio Banderas. Gwyneth Paltrow (who speaks Spanish) plays Maar. “La Banda Picasso” release date 25 January 2013 (Spain) “33 Días” expected release date September 2013 (Spain)

On 28th November 2012 at Tikitano Restaurant The Pink Ladies dance class organised their first fundraising event in aid of Cudeca. This small group of friends and exercise enthusiasts have all been touched by cancer and wanted to make a difference and create a great event for their friends and local community to enjoy. The event included a three course meal and entertainment by the Rat Pack and was a resounding success. The 200 tickets sold out within just a week and many local businesses supported the cause, through sponsorship and donating gifts to the wish trees on each table. Specsavers Opticas in Fuengirola and Marbella each donated a 200 Euro voucher to be used to buy glasses or contact lenses in their stores. These were part of the auction which raised 1,500 Euro for the cause. Judy Borland, Director of Specsavers Fuengirola said “It was great to be able to support this fundraising event and contribute to this important cause. Specsavers is committed to giving to charity and we look forward to taking part in more events like this.’’ In total the event raised 8,500 Euro and they want to make the event an annual affair. The Pink Ladies will be arranging a monthly Strictly Ballroom Tea Dance at Tikitano which will include a fundraising raffle for Cudeca. The first event will be on Wednesday 6th February from 15.30 and there will be a full afternoon tea and a ballroom class. For tickets call Vivian 690 083 113.
