Ark’s architectural style is defined as a fusion of classical and modern architecture, a review of Andalusian traditional architecture adapted to the times and needs of contemporary life. In their designing process, ARK pays special attention to detail and the use of materials, selecting all of them meticulously. Their continuous research into different traditional materials such as iron, mortar and copper, as well as the application of modern techniques, allows them to reach spectacular results in all their projects. “Tradition should not dictate what a home has to be. We design a home for the way its owner lives. The architecture, the landscaping, the exterior design to the decoration, arrangement and interior design of inside spaces. A home that is a unique, personal and an intimate place, a home that reflects its owner.” Arkitects Centro Comercial Sotomarket, Oficina nº2 Autovía del mediterraneo A-7, Salida 130, 11310 Sotogrande, San Roque, CÁDIZ T: 956 79 31 66 - info@ark-arquitectos.com www.ark-arquitectos.com

When it comes to adding personality to your home, there’s nothing more effective than choosing the right modern trends in furniture. The furniture that you outfit your home with should reflect your personality, and should also be as comfortable as possible in order to make your living space an enjoyable place to be. One of the best ways to find quality furniture is to follow the modern trends in the industry, and there is a variety of different elements that are being explored in the furniture industry, many of which are rising quickly in popularity. TREND 1 — NATURAL AND ECO-FRIENDLY The trend towards sustainability and “green living” is more pronounced than ever – and this is evident in many areas of life. Organic, natural foods and clothing, textiles and home furnishings – the trend towards green products remains en vogue. Nature produces an abundance of materials suited to this trend in flooring and home, such as bamboo, one of the greenest materials because it’s fast growing and doesn’t require pesticides, and furniture today is being inspired by the countless patterns, shapes and textures found in nature. many furniture manufacturers today realise that they can play a large part in managing our natural resources by creating green, eco-friendly furnishings to their product line-up. These companies have developed a solid environmental conscience and have chosen to do what they can to promote the concepts of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” through their furniture offerings. Green furnishings include furniture made from a variety of recycled and eco-friendly materials, such as reclaimed woods, such as beams, barn wood and old flooring, which often retains some of the characteristics of its original use and has a nice, comfortable finish to it. In additional, chairs and sofas covered with organically produced, low-impact dyed fabrics are becoming popular, as is the use of wool, cotton, hemp, and other natural fibres, and home furnishings are being made from recycled glass and metal. Consumers who choose furniture made from sustainable and eco-friendly materials discover that these home furnishings offer an array of indirect, but important benefits. many green furnishings are one-of-a-kind pieces with unique characteristics not available in mass-produced furniture. These distinctive furnishings can literally transform a room with their eclectic look. Certainly a table made from recycled barn wood or a bed frame forged from reclaimed iron will elicit comments about their origins. If buying new eco-friendly furniture, look for wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). That’s an assurance that it came from forestry operations that meet strong environmental, social, and economic performance standards. Go the reuse or recycled route, you’ll find a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction in outfitting you homes with ecofriendly furniture. TREND 2 — BOLD COLOURS, HIGH-QUALITY mATERIALS, QUIRKY DESIGNS This trend towards individual, unique style statements – customised living as it is often called – has a massive influence and opens up new opportunities in personal interior design. One of the most effective and popular aspects of modern furniture design is what many people consider to be “minimalist.” minimalist furniture usually employs simple, sleek design, and is not always meant to attract attention to itself. This type of furniture tends to be solid in colour and crafted from hard materials such as plastic and other composites. minimalist furniture tends to be quite expensive, which is sometimes due more to the fact that it is rather “en vogue” than the actual cost of manufacturing the furniture. For those who are looking for a way to add a radical edge to their dwelling space, however, minimalist furniture can be highly effective. marble and wood, leather and glass, wool and high quality plastic designs are featuring a lot in the furniture industry and creates light, relaxing and gender neutral home interiors that feel luxurious, inviting and comfortable. This year will also see lots of bold colour – pink, mustard yellow, cobalt blue, leaf green, turquoise, petrol and rust – separately or as block colours, but also in funky, colourful combinations. TREND 3 — mODULAR There are many individual design and interior ideas for making a small space more livable, but a single piece of transforming furniture can add to the appeal of a beautifully designed room. A trend towards practicality, modular furniture has become very popular and one of the biggest trends when it comes to interior designing. It’s furniture that configures and re-configures, allows imaginative use and offers the ability to customise your living space quickly and easily so that you can change the way the space looks and feels on a regular basis. The increased need for flexibility in function and layout is helping to drive the trend of modular furniture, because of the availability of less space both in home and office. Not only does modular furniture allow for easy assembly, repairing and flexibility in its use, but it is light and easy to move, and one of its greatest benefits is it allows enough flexibility in designing the final product as well as in choosing different colour combinations. With pre-made modules that can be fitted together as per your needs, you can create any number of designs and keep changing it. modular furniture has made the leap from businesses to designer furniture inspired home. Be it your living room, dining room, office, bedroom or even a hall, modular furniture is the definitely one of the options to vouch for.

Outdoor living spaces are becoming a priority to home buyers, as well as homeowners, who need to escape from the rigours of modern life. A place where we can relax, gather our thoughts and enjoy the outdoors. Today’s outdoor living areas are frequently designed as sumptuous retreats that incorporate all of the comfort and luxury found indoors, with upscale amenities, professional grade appliances and plush furnishings. The all-inclusive entertaining areas incorporate living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens and serve a function similar to their indoor counterparts. Family gatherings and parties can be easily hosted in these expansive extensions of living space, and the addition of spas, pools and gardens complete the total outdoor environment. Beyond these highly visible elements, a well-equipped outdoor retreat often rely equally on the subtle touches of lighting and audio components to create the perfect mood. Also, increased attention to environmentally-friendly design practices has ushered in the era of green terraces and green roof systems. Often reserved for custom residences, upper level green space makes use of innovative technologies to turn otherwise unused square footage into a liveable, interesting outdoor environment.

STYLISH SHADING Artistic, creative, shapely and elegant. Given our fairly mild winters, outdoor rooms on the Costa del Sol are usable for the majority of the year. Yet, even though we don’t experience much cold, the not-exactly-temperate conditions that come with our bouts of unbearable heat and flooding rains can be downright inhospitable at times. There are a vast variety of shading options available today — Vergola’s automated opening roof system or elegant shade sails. The more traditional and natural arbors and pergolas, which provide partial shade without completely blocking the natural light, are also frequent additions to residential hardscapes. Remember when designing the shading strategy for your home that outdoor living is such an enjoyable and important part of Spanish life. Consider incorporating Gas grill Clean lines and simple design the gas bottle is concealed inside the grill. The three burners each have several zones which can be regulated individually, making it easy to grill all sorts of food.www.evasolo.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

shading for outdoor eating, lounging and play. Stepping out of the burning sun into the blissful cool of shade is always a moment of great relief in summer. And today, shading is as much about adding style to your property as it is about reducing the cost of running your home. Of course, for those cool evenings, a fireplace or a freestanding fire pit will keep things warm and cosy. A fixed feature in an outdoor space, design-savvy heaters are built-in to keep you warm for all seasons — the ultimate outdoor room accessory. AmBIENT LIGHTING A well-lit landscape should make the space usable day or night while simultaneously creating beauty and security. Fortunately, new outdoor lighting products on the market offer a variety of creative and practical touches for achieving these goals. For example, LED lights are energy

efficient, cost-effective and low maintenance, and since they are low voltage, they often last a decade or more without replacement. Additionally, the changing hues of fibre optic lighting bring colour and creativity to the landscape, offering homeowners the flexibility to outline and highlight focal points like pools and waterfalls while creating special effects with rotating colours. POOL AND SPAS Although swimming pool trends come and go, some of today’s most popular pool must-haves will be around for years to come. Pool innovations that are slated to withstand the test of time include negative edges, beach entries, sun shelves, waterfalls, fibre optic lighting, builtin spas and bars and landscaping that provides a natural backdrop for the pool area. Another growing trend that’s here to stay, especially in

modern architecture, is the integration of pools into the home’s design enabling a seamless transition from internal living spaces to the water. manufacturers are excellent at catering to every whim and desire of today’s homeowners, seeking to capitalise on the latest and greatest technology as they provide more and more options for “tricking out” outdoor spaces. At the luxury end of the market, buyers can choose a wide variety of extras to give their outdoor spaces a little extra flair… • Outdoor shower cabanas and residential-grade outdoor saunas. • Decking — designers often wrap decks in benches instead of railings. It’s aesthetically more pleasing and adds a substantial amount of seating area for larger gatherings. • Unique flooring, such as recycled glass pavers for colour; they have the durability of concrete without the drab look. • Window and door technology, such as frameless glazing allows homeowners to “remove” an exterior wall, fully joining exterior and interior spaces. With so many options when it comes to your outdoor area, the possibilities are endless. Whatever your style, theme or lifestyle requirement, creating the right outdoor entertaining area to suit your needs has never been easier.

Built-in fireplaces, like this chic concrete number, let you inject imagination, design and warmth to an outdoor space. Here, a custom-designed fireplace with sunken grill casts its amber glow over matching concrete banquette seating and a ready supply of dry wood.

A Roof for All Seasons

VERGOLA OPENING ROOFS ARE DESIGNED NOT JUST FOR CALm SUmmER DAYS, BUT ALSO TO WITHSTAND THE STORmS THAT SOmETImES BATTER THE mEDITERRANEAN AT THIS TImE OF YEAR. The long summer days and balmy evenings of summer make outdoor living a pleasure; yet with winter most of us ‘batten down the hatches’ in preparation for unpredictable or severe weather that can destroy fragile awnings and terrace roofs. Yet this means that often we don’t enjoy our roof terraces, balconies and outdoor spaces as much as we could at this time of year. Yet, with Vergola, originally designed in Australia for its harsh weather conditions, outdoor terraces here can be usable all year round. Unlike awnings or retractable vinyl roofs, a Vergola is made from robust, interlocking fully adjustable louvres. Each louvre is made of BHP Colorbond steel, coated with an aluminium/zinc alloy, and then stylishly finished with an oven treated weather-resistant paint. This makes the Vergola opening roof maintenance free and exceptionally strong and that’s why it comes with a ten year guarantee. Over the past 25 years, Vergola has developed in-depth expertise in cre-

ating automatic opening roof systems that can withstand coastal weather. For example a Vergola system has been installed with great success on the waterfront at Darwin in the tropical far north of Australia, often the location of severe cyclonic storms. So here in the mediterranean, the sturdy construction of a Vergola means that it can easily resist winds year after year without ripping, tearing or flapping, unlike a canvas, fabric or vinyl cover. many people also ask how Vergolas, being made principally out of metal and with electrical components, cope with being near the sea. Here again, Vergola has lots of experience gained over a generation with coastal installations; making these automatic roofs ideal for mediterranean coastal areas where salt-water spray is present from time to time. To maintain a Vergola, it is simply recommended to regularly wash down the roof with a fresh water hose, at least once every month. As an interesting illustration of just how reliable Vergola is by the sea, The Royal Davui Resort on one of the smaller Fijian islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean installed Vergolas to create an indoor-outdoor bathroom experience for its discerning guests; and after more than 7 years of use, Vergola has not experienced any problems due to the marine environment. INFORmATION & FAQS For more information, consult the Vergola website at www.vergola.es There is a wealth of information for homeowners, business owners as well as architects and designers. In addition to videos and an image library, there is a useful FAQ section too. If you would like a free onsite consultation, or simply have a question, Vivia Bremer-Goldie is available in Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol on lifestyle@vergola.es or on (+34) 952 926 578.

The colour of the walls and flooring all play a part in the overall visual appeal of a room, but nothing creates more impact than the colour, texure, comfort and style of fabrics — draped windows, upholstered chairs and sofas, and massed together fabrics in cushions, bedding and throws. Fabrics reflect cultural traditions, modern interior design trends, people values, expectations and changing views at environment. Fortunately, we are blessed with a vast number of experienced interior designers and textile houses who love fabrics, know what works and have access to an eye-watering array of labels from Europe, England, Italy, Spain, and more. Picking the right fabric comes down to appeal and suitability, as well as choosing a fabric to create the look you want to achieve. What’s more, to meet an increasingly fashion-driven market, textile technology is creating fabulous new fabrics with bold patterns, unique colours and shimmering metals. Bold prints and strong patterns inspired by nature, such as tree silhouettes, ferns, and gingko leaves are still much in favour and this year and the metallic colours are less brassy and becoming more subtle and soft. same colour palette are also a hot look for spring 2012, and bright, monochrome primary colours are taking to the stage. Look out for shades of citrus green and pale acqua combined with a hit of yellow, as well as cooler neutrals such as cream and white or grey and charcoal. Grey, in the shades of light smoky to deep slates, dark charcoal to light cement has dominated the market in upholstery, attributed to the fact that it serves as an anchor to play up brighter colours such as Honeysuckle Yellow or 2012’s Pantone’s colour of the year, Tangerine Tango. Pinks, purples and greys in muted shades which portray escapism and are inspired by the Arts and Crafts era are also in favour. One of the most unique trends to stand out this year are fabrics and patterns inspired by tailored menswear – tweed, herringbone, tartan, hound’s tooth and Scottish check designs as seen in Alhambra International’s Sacha Collection — and the mood of these fabrics is austere, structured, dura-

Playful, bright colours are also a trend for 2012, these are a variety of expressive colours in reds, oranges, yellows and blues. Furniture that take-up lesser floor space and those that have storage space underneath help you save a lot of “real estate”. While it’s tempting to dash out and splash out on storage boxes, make sure you declutter first as you’ll will then be able to see exactly what storage solutions work best for you; be it large fitted wardrobes (go for floor-to-ceiling designs for maximum space) or wicker baskets in your bathroom. Bespoke built tailor-made storage serves as the ultimate clutter buster as it can be built to fit almost any unused space – for example a space beneath a tall staircase or inside spacious alcoves. The result is a place to store your goods without cramping your open living space. If you can, request wires

and cables to be hidden too. Often the biggest problem in small bathrooms is the lack of storage space. Unused bottles are a prime source of disarray in bathrooms, so bin those that have seen better days. To create room for storage, it is necessary to get creative. Look for storage units that are wall-mounted or under-thesink cabinets. A cabinet over the toilet or a shelf over a bathtub can add valuable space for storing bathroom essentials. Some storage solutions, such as a large basket for holding rolled up towels, can double as design elements. cupboards will create a place to hide items you don’t want on show, and display those you do. Get little ones in on the cleaning act, too. If you have toys scattered all over the place, buy a funky chest where they can store their toys when play time’s over. Out of sight… If your bedroom is brimming with belongings you may find it hard to get a decent night’s sleep. Look to hidden storage, like underthe-bed drawers and keep those must-have items out of sight for a more restful night. A well-designed and organised wardrobe can make it much easier to find what you are looking for, and also ensure that clothing and other items are kept in optimum condition. We’ve put together a few tips to help you gain a wardrobe that works for you. The professional will assess exactly how much space you need for your items. Remember that it is better to over-estimate than to under-estimate in order to allow for future purchases and to minimise the chances of clutter occurring. Some things that a professional will include in your wardrobe design are: • fixed and adjustable shelving • drawers and baskets in a range of heights and widths • purpose-built shoe racks • hanging units for belts and ties • hanging rails • slide-out television shelves • compartments to store hats and other accessories Professionals will also select the best doors for you, with the choice usually being between hinged and sliding doors. Hinged doors are great for larger rooms and give you more access to the contents of the wardrobe. Sliding doors are better where space is at a premium and you do not need to access the full contents of your wardrobe regularly. Ledgers, daily systems, cabinets and kitchen solutions make it easier by taking away half of the things that usually create clutter if left lying around on tables or in drawers. Nimrod Messeg - The Art of Metal Israeli artist, Nimrod Messeg, was born in Israel, the son of a renowed painter and Sabina – a well-respected poet. Having spent his childhood years in Israel surrounded by artistic influences, it is no surprise that Nimrod was carving his own wood and stone sculptures at the age of 12. He began designing metal furniture in 1992, and moved to Marbella in 1998 where he set up a workshop for metal design, specialising in forged iron items. It was here that Nimrod began producing his iron sculptures using largely traditional forging methods, with the majority of the work being hand-forged. His works of art merge sensuality, strength and technical mastery. The entire messeg design collection is uniquely hand-made in the workshop situated in the gallery. Amongst the original works on display one can find an impressive representation of banisters, furnitures and other various iron-made items. www.messegdesign.com 952 857439

FLOWERING TREES.

Early spring flowering — Reliable white and pink blossoms include fruit trees — deciduous trees such as pears, quince, cherry and apricots. But watch out. Apricots are normally the first to flower and often suffer damage from late wintry storms. march/April is also the main season for orange blossom. Plant a few, or even just one, evergreen orange, mandarin and lemon tree in the garden and the spring air will be filled with the sweet scent of the profuse hatch of white flowers. Plant a ‘Luna’ lemon and you can achieve a similar effect every six or eight weeks of the year, but on a smaller scale. Late spring flowering — As the temperatures warm up the more spectacular trees such as the callistemon (bottle brush tree), oleander, jacaranda, magnolia, schinus (mock pepper tree), the spring flowering mimosa, philadelphus (mock orange), viburnum, the miniature and full size waxy red flowered pomegranate and showy tamarisk start to flower.

SHRUBS. Camellias of all colours, yellow brooms, low growing purple lantanas and plumbago are amongst the earliest to flower. Followed by bougainvillas, solanums, wisteria, honeysuckle, hibiscus, the taller red, orange and yellow lantanas, rock roses and of course roses if you have a suitable soil rich in humus and water retaining. Although only white or whitish pink, jasmine is a must for the exotic scent. Plant one adjacent to the entrance gate or back door as Spaniards do.

Spring is an important season in our gardens in Spain. It is the first time in the year when we can achieve a simultaneous explosion of colour from trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs, and march is not too late to plant and enhance this years kaleidoscope of Spring colour. Spring gardening is essentially from march to the end of may. For us, Spring starts seriously, with the flowering of the Judas or Love tree with its bright blood coloured flowers oozing out of the branches before any leaves appear. There have been earlier spring like signs such as the flowering of almonds and daffodils, but these only raise false hopes of warmer Spring weather as cold snowy weather often comes after the almond blossom of late December to February. This year, January and February temperatures fluctuated and many shrubs were uncertain as to the season, budding early when temperatures soared into the mid twenties, but when the temperatures dropped by fifteen degrees a few days later the plants were very confused. In colder valleys the un-seasonal growth was caught by the frost, but now all seems to be coming into bud and flower along the Costas. So what can we now expect and what should we plant up?

Schinus PERENNIALS.

A bed of perennials or plants mixed in with shrubs can give a very colourful long lasting display. Try planting the elegant bird of paradise flower (strelitzia), echium with its impressive leaves and spires of blue or white flowers, purple red and yellow margaritas, brilliant coloured rudbeckias, valerian with continuous pink flowerings, and of course geraniums. But do ensure that you spray them against the dreaded geranium moth the day you purchase them and then every ten days. At the front of beds, around ponds, on the top of walls or in rockeries add low growing plants such as the vividly coloured gazanias, mesembryanthemums and pinks for a carpet of flowers. If you want something tall and spectacular plant a few agaves attenuate and wait patiently for them to flower. It will take a few years but be worth the wait. In the herb garden rosemary, thyme, sage and rue will probably be in flower. If you have succulents on a rockery or as specimens in terrace pots some are sure to be in flower. Others will have already finished flowering or will follow on later.

ANNUALS. As annuals appear in the nurseries start to plant in window boxes, hanging baskets and beds, but only if you are able to water them daily. They are fast growing and thirsty plants with shallow roots and need more attention than any other group of plants. If you are on north facing slopes with the chance of late frosts or cold winds it is probably best to delay planting out annuals until may. The most popular and easiest to care for are petunias, portulacas,

impatiens (busy lizzies), French marigolds, antirrhinums, stocks, and salvias. If you are a gardening enthusiast and grow plants from seed in a greenhouse you can add a wide range of varieties that are not normally offered in the nurseries. You can also sow seeds such as candy tuft, nasturtiums, poppies, marigolds, the multicoloured large or small flowered zinnias and sweet peas directly into the garden. We plant some sweet peas mixed in with other plants in the flower garden but our main planting is in our vegetable garden. Here we have a twenty metre row for cutting and to attract early pollinators for any vegetables in flower. The spring vegetable garden is also brightened up by companion plantings of nasturtiums, marigolds and borage.

BULBS, CORmS AND RHIZOmES. Bulbs and rhizomes planted in pots ,containers and corners of the garden can be attractive ingredients in the Spring display. Our display will include both tall and dwarf Dutch and Spanish irises, clivias, arum lilies, freesias, grape hyacinths, oxalis and early lilies. We no longer plant daffodils, tulips and hyacinths as slugs devoir them during the summer months looking for water. The harder skinned and dryer fleshed corms and rhizomes don’t have the problem to any noticeable extent. If you have gaps in the garden, or have spent the winter laying out a new garden and improving the soil, march is a good time to make plantings. Roots will have time to establish themselves before the hotter days of early summer, but do put them on a drip watering system or water weekly by hose or watering can if there are no Spring showers. Spring winds can quickly dry out the top layers of the soil and many plants are now sold in composts, and although water absorbing are not highly water retentive. Recognise that pots and containers can dry out within a day once we have temperatures in the high twenties, so do use a good water retentive compost mix and if possible add in a water retentive gel such as Terra-Cottem. Yes, achieving a colourful spring garden does take time but all your efforts will be rewarded for many years to come. For those with gardens the book Your Garden in Spain - From Planning to Planting and Maintenance can be an essential guide. If you are limited to the windowsills, balconies and terraces of an apartment an investment in Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style can speed your conversion of dead spaces into enviable outdoor living spaces. © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe march 2012

ACQUA E SALE What makes Acqua E Sale different from other Italian restaurants along the coast is that they add an international contemporary touch to their dish presentation. Much more than Olive Oil THE OLIVES BEHIND SPANISH OLIVE OIL BRAND HOJIBLANCA Nowadays it is proven that extra virgin olive oil is the healthiest oil, the only natural one and the one with the most beneficial properties for people, and since its inception in 1984, the Hojiblanca Group has become the world’s largest olive oil producer, reaching an annual turnover of 450 million euros. It is a farmer cooperative in the South of Spain with headquarters in Antequera, a few kilometres from malaga. The co-operative produces an increasing average of 130,000 tonnes of olive oil annually, has 94 oil mills and represents over 50,000 farmers. The company also produces tinned and packaged olives, and is the second largest producer in the world in this sector. It is the market leader in Spain for extra virgin olive oil and is highly regarded internationally for its commitment to high quality products and reliability. Hojiblanca already has offices in China and Brazil and trades in 60 countries including the USA, mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic, UK, Japan, China, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Saudi Arabia, UAE and South Africa. antee the best quality of their products. In Hojiblanca we take care of the fruit from its blossom until the harvesting of the olives in their prime ripeness; this is the first step in achieving good olives and the optimum quality of extra virgin olive oils. The combination of traditional methods of harvesting – beating with a stick and hand picking – with the most technologically advanced ones, allows us to start the elaboration process at the same time as the harvesting. In this way, our fruits enter into the production process right after being picked from the tree, an essential factor for obtaining a good extra virgin olive oil and good table olives. And thanks to the fruit’s natural antioxidant properties (Tocopherols and b-carotene), it delays the aging process and the development of degenerative deceases. • Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the only oil that can be consumed directly as it is pressed from the fruit, therefore maintaining its original flavour, aroma and nutritional components. • High quality Extra Virgin olive oil, like Hojiblanca, contains high levels of antioxidants, such as polyphenols, vitamin E, chlorophyll and carotenoids. Place the fruit, crème de cassis and sugar into a large saucepan and cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. Stir through the mint then drain in a sieve, reserving the juice. Top with half the fruit and mint mixture and spread evenly to the edge of the bread, then repeat the layers, finishing with a layer of bread. Costa Bear Make your own personalised Teddy Bear!

Costa Bear is a fantastic new place for kids to create their very own personalised teddy bear! Situated in the San Pedro de Alcántara industrial estate on the Costa del Sol, Costa Bear was created by two mothers, marisa and Deborah, who felt that there needed to be something more for children to do on the Costa del Sol. It is an ideal venue for children’s parties as it is supervised by fully-qualified staff and there is even a popcorn stall and a chocolate fountain to enjoy. As you enter through the front door of Costa Bear’s house, you are met by Costa Bear himself. He sits you around a circular table and he stands in the middle offering advice on how best to put your customised teddy together. You start off by choosing what kind of teddy you would like and then you go about customising him or her. There is a special machine that stuffs your teddy to your exact huggable requirements and then you can start putting other things inside to personalise your teddy even more such as little tags that rep-

resent love, a wish, a hug, courage, friendship or a kiss. You can also give your teddy a nice smell (that lasts for around nine months) such as talc, melon, strawberry, candyfloss, chocolate or jasmine. Everything that goes inside your teddy meets industry standards and is completely childproof. Now that your teddy is starting to take shape, he needs to make some noise. With a small recording device, you can make your own personal recording or use one of the standard sounds on offer such as a laugh, cry, snore, birthday song plus much more. Once the sound has been stored, the device is put inside your teddy so when you squeeze him or her, they will make the desired sound. All that is left is to do now is to dress the teddy. There is a large selection of garments to choose from at Costa Bear, but if there isn’t anything there that takes your fancy, an outfit can be custom-made for you. After your teddy has been registered and certified with his or her very own ID card, your teddy is ready to go home!

HOTEL SEZZ SAINT-TROPEZ, FRENCH RIVIERA Designer Christophe Pillet has made sure that guests smell, hear and taste ‘holiday’ from their beds and baths. Interiors reflect the 1950s colour code with a mix of white, light grey, dark brown, light blue and saffron. The extravagant mustards of the carpets and the reds of the light fixtures and linens highlight the subdued palette of local materials.

Holiday trinkets and souvenirs often clutter up the home, or end up lost in a cupboard. Not those of Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez! TRAVEL & LEISURE > wide recognition in the fashion and luxury worlds. He is responsible for a range of products and furniture and regularly showcases his work at Salone del mobile in milan and at Imm cologne. Pillet has also designed buildings and interiors, from clothing stores such as Lacoste Club in Paris to bars and restaurants such as maison Blanche in morocco and Bar du Port in Saint Tropez. Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez is the brainchild of hotelier Shahé Kalaidjian and designer Christophe Pillet who had already worked together in 2005 to create Hotel Sezz in Paris. Pillet designed every object, from the light fixtures to the faucets in the bathrooms. “This project was a dream for me as I was able to get really involved in every aspect of the design,” Pillet says. “It is a very rare opportunity for a designer.” Pillet and Kalaidjian had in mind a holiday story for Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez that would be different to their urban property in Paris. “We did not reproduce Sezz Paris in Saint-Tropez; we went one step further in the adventure,” Pillet explains. “It’s a property full of light and air where guests can smell, hear and taste “vacation” from their beds and baths. The furniture at Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez is like in a summer house – a composition of individual pieces, each with plenty of character.”

The astounding volumesculpture in the lobby, also becomes an enormous bench.

Stainless steel waterfall bath spouts and oversized square spa shower heads blend beautifully with materials typical of Province: exotic wood and local sandstone tiling. With views of the Japanese garden, guests can experience the region’s beauty from an entirely new perspective.

The furniture and objects in the hotel were produced by Italian and American furniture brands. For example, the lighting fittings were created by mazzega and Oluce; the bathroom fixtures crafted by Fantini, the sinks are manufactured by Boffi and the chairs by Emeco. For the rooms, Pillet was inspired by the colour code of the fifties. Chairs in light blue, carpets in saffron, red lamps and grey duvets contrast with light curtains, white stone floors and panelled walls in dark walnut wood. His signature piece is the Jade Lounge Chair which he designed for Porro. The chair has a blackash wood frame, a jade blue leather seat and is characterized by soft and wavy lines. The public spaces also feature custom-made furniture. Large sunbeds surround the central pool area. The focal point of the lobby is an artful composition of Pillet’s designs. A striking semi-circular sofa cocoons guests with its extra high backrest. Its sides curve in showing off a slatted ash wood backing. Adding visual interest is a grouping of silver and white ceramic coffee tables, round and of differing sizes. Restaurant Colette is furnished with Pillet’s Summer Set Chairs made from woven metal cables and softened with white linen cushions. Hotel Sezz Saint-Tropez offers a new hospitality experience on the French Riviera. Surrounded by a lush wooden park and within walking distance to the beach, guests can truly sink into their holidays. The resort’s layout resembles a small Provençal village with 35 bungalows, cocoons and two villas, all grouped around an azure pool.

A new Concept A new Maserati MASERATI’S VISION OF A HIGH PERFORMING SPORT LUXURY SUV.

For some reason SUVs today never seem to offer the kind of uplifting driving pleasure and luxury atmosphere that are two givens of today’s high-end sports and luxury cars, and this is precisely what Maserati has set out to do. It’s new sport luxury SUV concept was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, the forerunner of the future Maserati range, creating at once discontinuity by entering a new segment, and continuity by maintaining the integrity of Maserati’s DNA. The idea of a sport luxury SUV is naturally not totally new to Maserati. Many will remember the Kubang concept that was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. At a time in which few other brands were going in the direction of a sport luxury SUV, Maserati was already thinking to build one. Today potential synergies with sister brand Jeep – a brand that 70 years ago created a new segment of the market and is today a leader of this very segment – are the important catalyst for Maserati’s own interpretation of a sport luxury SUV. The essence and all major system components of the Maserati sport luxury SUV will unmistakably be Maserati: style, engine, suspensions, brakes, handling and performance will all be 100%

Maserati in picture-perfect continuity with the brand’s core values of sportiness, style, elegance, luxury, performance and craftsmanship. The distinctive Maserati style that makes the Kubang immediately recognisable as a true Maserati has been created by the Maserati Style Centre headed by Lorenzo Ramaciotti. Perfection is enhanced with the introduction of aniline leather, platinum effect metals and a special crackle finish. New-generation high-tech Maserati proprietary engines will be designed in Modena by Paolo Martinelli – Head of the Maserati Powertrain Department and for nearly 30 years at Ferrari, where he also served as engine chief of the Formula One racing team – and will be produced in Maranello by Ferrari. An AT 8 speed automatic transmission and specific performance settings such as suspensions, brakes, steering will be exclusively developed

in Modena for the Maserati sport luxury SUV by the Maserati Product Development Department. Until today Maserati has been producing sedans, coupes and two- or four-seater convertibles. Whether we named them Quattroporte, GranTurismo or GranCabrio — or, before them, Ghibli, Mistral, Bora or Indy — their common denominator rested in two words: sportiness and luxury. Times have changed: sportiness and luxury today don’t have just one definition. They can also take the form of a very dynamic looking and high performing sport luxury SUV. Rumours have it that once in production Maserati could possibly change the SUV’s name from Kubang to Cinqueporte, but whatever it’s called the new top end of luxury SUV’s is looking quite prepared to take on the likes of BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne. Gibraltar Wedding Workshop HOW TO GET HITCHED WITHOUT A HITCH Planning the happiest day of your life should be a fun and rewarding process however constraints of time, money and knowledge can turn a labour of love into daily nightmare. Local specialists medWeddings are here to spare you from emotional meltdown with a Wedding Workshop at the Eliott Hotel on Friday 27 April from 4.30pm. Jeanette Obytz of medWeddings has been helping love struck couples get married in Gibraltar for over a decade now and believes the Wedding Workshop will save brides-to-be time, money and stress. Jeanette explains, “The majority of women only get married once which means they have no prior experience to draw on to create the perfect day. Enlisting the services of a wedding planner is one clever solution, but I realize it’s not for everyone. Our Wedding Workshop will gather together a range of professionals from photographers to florists, fitness instructors to caterers, and each will impart their insider tips through presentations, seminars and informal chat so that guests have the confidence and the knowhow to make their wedding a success.” Taking place across a five hour evening session, the Wedding Workshop will encompass every aspect of the big day. Experts will cover logistics — the location, travel bookings, invitations and the guest list; the design touches — colour schemes, hair styles, make-up, flowers, the cake, table decorations and the all-important dresses; and finally entertainment — the music, DJs, bands, photography and a video memory of the entire occasion. Jeanette continues, “We want the Wedding Workshop to be fun. Nervous brides-to-be can meet others in the same boat over a welcome drink in a relaxed atmosphere and of course bring the fiancé, bridesmaids, mothers and even mothers-in-law to get some hands-on knowledge. We’ll only recommend reputable suppliers and help them keep an eye on that budget to stop it spiralling out of control.”
