Underfloor heating is by far the most comfortable way of heating your home, but did you know it can also cool your home? Arcos SP has been providing this system, SUELO CONFORT as a good alternative to air conditioning for the past seven years, especially in the inland areas. Homes in coastal areas, where the humidity is higher, also require an air conditioning system to ensure that the interior is within the so-called “comfort zone”. This comfort zone in Summer is between 23 and 26 degrees centigrade with humidity of between 35 and 75%, a zone in which 99% of people feel most comfortable. The advantage of having an air conditioning system in combination with underfloor heating/ cooling is the fact that rapid changes in temperature can be made. Floor heating although extremely comfortable needs time to reach the

The ARCOS CONFORT system enables users to log into the system via a smart phone or computer, and view their house plan and settings. The user can switch the system on or off, change the temperature, etc., from anywhere in the world.

desired temperature while air heating, like a dual air conditioning unit, heats the room very fast. ARCOS CONFORT is a unique system that uses a computer to determine what is the best, most comfortable and energy efficient way to reach the desired temperature. The user only has to set the thermostat, and the computer does the rest. The ARCOS CONFORT system can also be accessed through a web browser (internet explorer or any other) where actual values can be viewed, and settings changed. The ARCOS CONFORT system can also be extended to a complete domotic system including switching on and off lights, TVs and audio equipment and opening or closing blinds and curtains. LOFT & Roomers

A new inspiring Scandinavian furniture store on Marbella’s Golden Mile offering “Nordic living for less”. Their aim is to offer their customers the best products at the best price. “LOFT” stands for the simple and minimalistic style and “Roomers” stands for elegance, rural living, cosiness and warmth. LOFT & Roomers will be looking at a seasonal colour scheme with its roots in a wide range of white shading, spiced up with bluish and greenish tones. They believe in the following three themes: URBAN (denim blue), BOTANIC (mystic green) and FRENCH (black & white). In the urban style there will be white high gloss

and wood, mixed with upholstery in shades of ocean blue. They focus on contrasts by putting for example a white high gloss table fits with a retro wooden chair. The botanic style encompasses nature with lots of wood in light and dark shades together with pastel green colours. The style can be classic but at the same time raw. Finally, the main colours of the French style are black and white blended with bluish tones and a touch of powder pink fusing the old expression with the new raw look.

Shamrocks and Butterflies

For St. Patricks Day 2013 DEBRA Spain, also called The Butterfly Children Charity, is the charity chosen by the Irish Club of Marbella to be the beneficiary of proceeds from businesses at its inaugural Saint Patricks Day festival in Marbella, which will take place on Sunday 17 March. The event’s committee was deeply touched by the work the charity does to improve the quality of life of children suffering from the vicious, incurable disease known as Butterfly Skin condition (Epidermolysis bullosa). This is the reason why the committee wishes to raise funds for a respite home in Marbella and visits to the families of children affected by EB by a Debra team of Experts i.e. specifically trained to treat and bandage the skin of these children. A new website was launched in October – www.stpatricksdayfestivalmarbella.com - and from here you can see who and what will be involved in this event. The event will be supported by the Marbella Town Hall, the Irish Embassy in Madrid, Guinness, An Bord Bia and several local Irish and Spanish businesses.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

Muebles Gavira a family at full speed THE ADMINISTRATORS AND OWNERS OF MUEBLES GAVIRA, IDALIO, EUSTAQUIO AND ANGÉLICA GAVIRA, ARE SIBLINGS WORKING EVERY DAY IN THEIR CASARES COSTA FURNITURE SHOWROOM. BUT BEHIND THAT APPARENT NORMALITY, LIES A PASSIONATE HIDDEN PAST THAT IS PACKED FULL OF ADRENALINE, SPEED, SACRIFICE AND EFFORT WITHIN THE EXCITING WORLD OF MOTORBIKE RACING.

Angélica Gavira

26

They have a thousand stories to tell… triumphs, celebrations, worldwide travelling and especially what we don’t get to see on TV… our favourite drivers, the terrible injuries, the search for sponsorships, the networking world of professional sports and the ins and outs which shape up the Grand Prix Motorbike world. It was back in the nineties when the Gavira brothers started motorbike racing, and right from the start they stood out due to their courage and aggressive driving skills. Victories arrived soon after, winning the Andalucía Championships two years in, each one in their own category. But the journey wasn’t going to be easy, with no sponsor or manager, or the money required for this kind of sport, they had to fight all kinds of adversities to make their way into the elite world of motorcycle sport. Eustaquio Gavira recalls, “I remember going through Europe in a rental van, we only had enough money for the races so we ate sandwiches and camped in tents for weeks on end. When we won prizes, that saved us and we could then go onto the next race. If we had a bad result, we wouldn’t earn enough money so we would then have to return back to Spain.” The brothers had won Spanish championships on several occasions, even though they didn’t compete

with a first class team and they fought for Spain’s title many other years, until Idalio was able to win Europe’s Superbikes championship in 1996 and Eustaquio finished in third position, ranking them both in the top five in the Thunderbikes Speed World championship! This was a great success for these humble boys from southern Spain, as no other driver had previously achieved this in Spain. In 1997 they raced the 250cc World Championship where they were sponsored by Mobil Oil that season together with Italy’s famous driver Valentino Rossi (9 times winner of the world championship). This became a problem for the brothers as the manager of the team was also Italian and invested everything into his fellow countryman… a season to forget for the Gavira brothers as their best result achieved that season was tenth position in Malaysia. Many other championships took place, and the Gavira brothers always fought for podium positions. During 1998 and 1999, Eustaquio was Spain’s endurance champion in a one and only 24-hour race. In 2002 the brothers hung up their Grand Prix Motorbike driving suits, but still had petrol to burn, and dedicated themselves to other motorcycle sports such as motocross, Enduro, Supermotard. It was during this time that their youngest sibling Angélica emerged. Angélica was the interior decorator at Gavira and was always devoted to her brothers sport, helping out whenever she was needed and unknowing to herself, a real driving talent. The brothers main focus now was the furniture stores and they put racing aside as a hobby, but Angélica had only just started. Tired of watching from the sidelines, Gavira’s home decorator started to train until she won womens sub-championship of Spain’s Enduro – a difficult sport mainly dominated by men. Enduro is tiring and dangerous, but Angélica was unperturbed and beat half of her other competitors in the mixed races! These days, the three Gavira siblings are certainly a family that go at full speed. They still ride motorbikes at rallies and extreme orientation trials, and also coach at a prestigious race driving school, and teach theory and practical classes at the Jerez racetrack. www.mueblesgavira.es

PERSONALITY PROFILE

CARLOS LAMAS HAS RISEN TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST WELL-RESPECTED ARCHITECTS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL. HIS ARCHITECTURAL WORK IS WIDELY RECOGNISED BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY, AND COVERS EXTENSIVE GROUND RANGING FROM THE DESIGN OF PRIVATE VILLAS, URBANISATIONS AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS. ON THIS RARE OCCASION, CARLOS WAS KIND ENOUGH TO SIT DOWN AND ANSWER A FEW OF OUR QUESTIONS REGARDING HIS STYLE, INSPIRATIONS, AND EVEN A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT HIS CHILDHOOD.

Can you tell us about the house you grew up in? I was born in Argentina and raised in a middle size city on the Atlantic Ocean. I remember our home was located in a beautiful green residential area within the city, full of trees and wide streets. I did my studies at university in Argentina, and after completing my degree, I travelled to Europe where I found my first job as an architect. What triggered your interest in architecture and design? My interest in architecture came from the very beginning. I started my studies in technical design at an industrial school and then studied architecture for six years at university. I spent two years in Madrid doing a Masters degree course, but unfortunately it did not fulfill my expectations as I was more interested in architectural construction than architectural theory. How long have you been a professional architect and what was your first design project? I have been working as an architect for over 25 years. After completing my studies, my first design project was an individual villa, designed in Mediterranean style. What do you think is the most unique thing in your portfolio? I haven’t designed it yet (Carlos smiles), but I have several good architectural design projects in my portfolio including a theatre, a 17th Century building restoration in Bucharest in Romania, a Botanical Garden and several luxury villas in Spain and Europe. Are there any projects that you enjoy tackling the most? Individual luxury villas. I find it challenging and rewarding to draw from another one’s dreams about the “perfect” home. Every project I embark

on is different, unique and exclusive, and reflects the owner’s lifestyle. Architects work with numerous materials, both traditional and modern. What is your favourite material to work with? Definitely natural stone, glass and wood. What role does green building play in your work? Sustainable building is a consequence of common sense and environmental responsibility, not a new wave. Who inspires you? It’s not a matter of who but what inspires me. I am influenced by two major elements, travel and books. What is your favourite building? A building that gives me an emotive response, and a building that reflects harmony and elegance. Whose home would you most love to design? And why? A modern art collectors home. I can imagine how interesting the interaction would be. We could share the inspirations, expressions and emotions of creativity. Is there any dream project you have your eyes on? Every new commission is a dream project. I will soon be launching a new enterprise project in Spain and overseas with a well-known Dutch property agent. The project, known as “ESSENZA” contemporary living, will open soon in Marbella, and offers the best in contemporary design villas, quality and service in a global design concept. Carlos Lamas offices are located in Urb. Marbella Real on the Golden Mile, Marbella. T: 609 572 275 Website: www.carloslamas.com

That nip in the air means the holidays are approaching, bringing the happy chaos of a house filled with friends and family. You can bet they will all end up in the kitchen — which makes this the perfect time to start rethinking that space. With proper planning and today’s technology, a kitchen can be remodeled to accommodate even the most ambitious entertaining. OPEN IT UP If you live in an older home, you may be dealing with a U or G-shaped kitchen sequestered from the rest of the house, where Mum cooked and cleaned, then served everyone in an adjoining room. In today’s typical household, both partners are likely to bring home the bacon — and help

42

each other cook it. Hosting a dinner party usually involves a tag team. The kitchen is the hub of the home today and has to serve multiple purposes. If you entertain a lot, you need flexible-use spaces within your kitchen that can accommodate various people, whether young kids or friends or visiting relatives. Islands are usually recommended for kitchens at least 12 feet wide. Open layouts such as an open galley kitchen with an island and a bank of cabinets against the back wall, or an L-shape with peninsula or island, allow the cook(s) to chat with kids doing homework or guests gathered around the island, which serves as a makeshift desk, buffet, wet bar, and dining area.

MAKE THE ISLAND MULTITASK Islands are requested in most new kitchens now, and for good reason. Not only do you eat most of your meals there, it also serves as a traffic cop, keeping people close at hand but out of the way of the food-preparation area. Most kitchen projects these days involve ripping out the wall between the kitchen and dining room and replacing it with an island, so the kitchen can be expanded into one large space. This allows better access and traffic flow for entertaining. Try to avoid putting a range in an island because it creates problems with ventilation and aesthetics. If people are sitting there, you don’t want to feel like you’re performing at the hibachi grill of a Japanese restaurant. Sinks, on the other hand, allow for less

messy operations like salad making. You spend 80 percent of your time in the kitchen at the sink, so you should put it where you want the most interaction. For entertaining and dealing with family, an island sink is the best use of that space. An option is to put a cooktop on the lower section of a two-level island, with a countertop at standard height and a serving/eating area slightly higher, at 42 inches. That way, guests can sip wine at bar stools behind the higher area, while they put in their two cents with the cook. CHOOSE SPILL-RESISTANT COUNTERS Granite is still the first choice for counter and island tops, but engineered stone or quartz countertops such as Zodiaq® and Silestone® are gain-

ing fast. It used to be one in 20 people went with quartz; now it’s more like seven in 20. There is more variety available now, and more consistency. Since the quartz products are ground-up stone suspended in resin, you get what you see in the showroom. Granite, on the other hand, is a solid chunk of natural stone, so colouration and texture can vary. Choose granite slabs at the fabricator so you can see exactly what they’re getting. If you do a lot of entertaining, it’s important to note that quartz repels stains better than granite and requires less maintenance. Granite needs to be sealed a couple times a year, while quartz counters come pre-treated and don’t require upkeep. Granite is also more porous. Spill a glass of red wine on anything but black granite and it will

get into those tiny pits and stain. Red wine will not penetrate quartz materials. CONSIDER CERAMIC Although hardwood floors are an option in the kitchen particularly if you want to tie an open kitchen into the adjoining rooms, ceramic til or marble is recommended for frequent entertaining. Hardwood will scratch and discolour with a lot of spills. Ceramic tile can be costly, but it’s nonporous, so it resists stains and wears like iron if installed properly. ADD STORAGE One of the merits of creating flexible spaces is that you don’t have to keep everything in one HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

spot. If you have multiple people cooking, you may need more than one workstation. The way we buy groceries has also changed, people now shop in bulk at mega-stores like Carrefour and Morrisons, which tends to demand the older style pantry storage in an adjacent or secondary area. Installing a butler’s pantry is a good way to store items ordinary cabinets can’t accommodate — and comes in mighty handy when you’re stocking up for company. BRING IN BACKUP For homeowners who do serious entertaining, install extra-large, professional ranges or ranges designed for speciality cooking with woks or grills. Also install a second sink to use as a serving bar or quick rinse for wine glasses and, possibly,

44

a second dishwasher and mini-refrigerator. While ice machines come standard in most refrigerators now, you might want an under-counter ice maker placed where it’s more convenient. Full-height wine coolers are particularly popular, and are handy for cooling pots and serving drinks at large dinner parties. A warming drawer is recommended if you plan to bring in caterers or have multiple types of food, some warm and some cool.

KITCHEN IN LAS BRISAS, using Krion, a new material from Porcelanosa Kitchen by Kubic Design Solutions www.kitchendesignspain.com TURN UP THE PARTY LIGHTS A well-planned lighting scheme allows for function as well as ambience. Put all lighting on dimmers so it can be adjusted for brightly-lit work areas and a quiet, intimate meal at the same time. Recessed overhead lights provide an even wash over the entire room, while under-cabinet lights illuminate food prep and cleanup, and decorative pendants cast a romantic glow over the island. If you want something really unique, consider LED technology. LED lights are costly, but they last 80,000 hours — the life of your home. A kitchen remodel can bring your cooking and dining experience to a whole new level of comfort and convenience. New appliances, tailor-made cabinets, and low-maintenance natural stone countertops could be just what your home needs, and with a little help

from the experts it can be a hassle-free transformation that you are sure to love. TIPS • Choose two moderately sized islands that serve specific functions (food prep and serving) rather than a single massive island that dominates the room, shows seams and is impossible to reach across. • For function and a fabulous look, don’t limit yourself to one countertop surface. • Illuminate the room with dressy chandeliers or pendant lights. • Use large stone slabs rather than busy tilework on the backsplashes to keep the design clean and uncluttered.

Choose the right Kitchen Sink

WITH SO MANY DESIGNS AVAILABLE, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW… While the look of your kitchen does matter when choosing a sink, you also need to think about what your needs are. Are you a keen cook who wants a sink big enough to soak baking trays? Is your kitchen small? Then a corner sink or sink with accessories, such as a chopping board and drainer that fit over the bowl, may be a good choice. Then there’s the material — most are hard wearing but some are easier to maintain. Use our guide to choose. CERAMIC sinks are chemical, stain and heat-resistant, but can chip and should be dried after use to avoid limescale marks. Many come in the Belfast style. (Photo) Kiora Z sink by Duravit is positioned centrally and is framed by two uniform draining surfaces which are inclined towards the bowl and water flows easily into the bowl from both sides. www.duravit.com

COMPOSITE sinks are made up from rock or quartz crystals and resin and are resistant to scratches, stains, heat, chemicals and colour-fading. They are easy to clean with normal detergents and water and come in a range of colours and designs. (Photo) 100% Silestone ‘Integrity’ sink by Cosentino www.silestone.com

STAINLESS STEEL Cleans well with ordinary detergent, but scratches easily so avoid scourers and neat bleach. A buff with a dry cloth after use will help maintain the finish and avoid limescale build-up. Comes in a variety of designs from circular to square. (Photo) Italian stainless steel accessorised sink with sliding boards. www.dadaweb.it

CORIAN is a solid surface material that’s stain-resistant and durable. It can be formed into any shape so can be used to create a sink that joins seamlessly to the worktop. Available in over 70 colours, it’s easy to clean with soapy water. (Photo) DuPont Corain® sink, durable, stain resistance and easy care through years of use. www.dupont.com

WHICH DESIGNS CAN I CHOOSE FROM? Sinks come in all shapes and sizes and can have one, one and a half, or two bowls. A single bowl design is a spacesaving option that, like most sinks, comes with or without an integrated drainer. The 1.5 bowl has a large bowl with a half bowl to the side - handy for tipping dregs into when the other bowl is full. The twin bowl is good for a busy kitchen as you get two ‘sinks’ in one.

48

COPPER or WOOD are unusual options. Copper sinks develop their own patina with age, but you can seal them to maintain your chosen finish. (Photo) Native Trails kitchen sinks are forged of high-quality reclaimed copper and hand-hammered by true artisans. www. nativetrails.net

Once you’ve thought about the bowls, these are the main types of sink: INSET Sits on top of the worktop with a lip running around the edges. UNDER-MOUNTED Built-in under the worktop for a sleek look. Usually no drainer, but you can have grooves cut into the worktop or get a draining board. BELFAST/BUTLER’S Under-mounted with the front exposed for a country look. CORNER These sinks make good use of otherwise wasted space.

The dining room is the most family-centred room in your house and with home trends promoting open floor plans and large kitchens with vast islands for entertaining, a separate room for formal dining is making a retreat out of the home and are becoming part of the open space. Whether you’re looking for an upgrade or designing your first dining room, it is necessary to know what you want. Dining room furniture needs to be flexible and adaptable for most of us, simply because the dining room is one of the rooms which has a wide range of uses. From a place where families can come together to reconnect at the end of the day to the focal point when entertaining a large number of guests, as a place to do your paperwork or for the kids to do their homework, it needs to be practical, versatile and functional, as well as being a space that still boasts a mixture of style and design. Always begins the decorating process by asking the questions, “How do you entertain? And how do you eat with your family?” It’s basic questions like these that will ensure that you’ll create the perfect space for your needs. The following tips will help you to choose the right dining set. THE SIZE OF THE DINING TABLE MATTERS Keep the importance of space in mind when buying a dining table and always make sure that you allow an extra two feet on all sides of the table space. Comfort is key in dining rooms and being able to get around the table once all are seated is a necessity. Round tables are practical in high traffic areas, and styles featuring a single leg provide enough leg room for a number of chairs. If you need something small and compact, square tables are best as they can easily be tucked into a corner. It is advisable to take measurements of the dining area before buying a dining set and use the measurements to get it right. There are several surface options when choosing a new table such as wood, glass, marble and stone. You should choose a set which complements your style and interior design, and with a user-friendly finish that won’t require constant protection and maintenance. Wood, which can take all sorts of wear or tear, is ideal. However, highly polished styles will need to be protected from heat or scratching with mats or tablecloths. Surfaces such as glass, stone and marble are more durable, but can appear cold and unwelcoming. Make sure wood tables have been totally sealed as moisture can cause bowing or cracking. However, rustic timber tables or reclaimed wood tables with similar flaws can be charming, and will withstand many more years of knocks, which add to its warmth and character.

Calligaris Hyper dining table and Corte wooden chair www.calligaris.com

TAKE A SEAT The colour, material and design of dining chairs that you choose should blend in well with your dining table. For an eclectic look, mix the style of your chairs with that of your table. The safest way to do this is to keep your colours or timbers the same. A HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

variety of textures in an all-white scheme adds interest, but there’s no harm in being bold with colour and don’t compromise on quality. When choosing a chair, kneel on the seat, push the back and press on the arms – there should be some flexibility, but no creaking. LIGHTING Cast the right glow over your dining table by ensuring the bottom of your pendant light is suspended one to one and a half metres above the tabletop. They can be grouped, and bulbs of different wattages can create a range of effects. During the day, take advantage of natural sunlight by using adjustable window treatments, but at night it is best to have a mix of overhead lighting, lamps and candles to cater to different needs. If you do choose full overhead lighting, make sure that is adjustable by installing a dimmer switch to enable you to create different moods. There are many ways to design a stylish, familyfriendly dining room that will accommodate your family’s needs and there’s a range or finish to suit any room scheme. Remember before you fall in love with a style to ask the fundamental questions of how you entertain and how your family uses the space. If you stick to your answers, stay away from trends and buy what you want, you will have a room that can grow with you through the years.

THE FOCAL POINT FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION

Contemporary Heating 62

| NOVEMBER DECEMBER

From roaring fires to energy-efficient stoves and underfloor heating, Home & Lifestyle explore the best ways to keep your spanish home warm. INSULATION Before you start to switch on the heating, it pays to make sure your home is well insulated and isn’t damp. A dry, fully insulated home consumes about half the heat of one without insulation, as up to 34% to 40% of heating is lost through the ceiling and a further third through floors, good insulation saves in bills, so if you’re building, you should be sure to add insulation to concrete floors right up to the slab edges. While it’s generally hard to add wall insulation to an existing home, take the opportunity to add it if you’re changing walls in a renovation. You can insulate windows with double-glazing, which is becoming more and more affordable. Prevent heat leak with thermal-lined curtains, adding generous margins on the sides and a pelmet at the top to trap the air and contain heat.

DRY OUT THE DAMP A humid house is hard to heat, because heat energy is absorbed by the moisture before the temperature can rise. A dehumidifier is a good start, but a forced ventilation system, which replaces the moist air in the house with dry air from the ceiling, is a great first line in home heating. SOLAR The sun’s rays are cheap and – mostly – available, so use them well. Focus on design that uses passive solar heating. Windows oriented to the north or north west, and banks of insulation in floors, ceilings and walls to hold the heat captured during the day for release after dark. For best comfort and cost savings, choose heat governed by smart electronic timers and thermostats. Electronic brains detect temperature changes before you do, boosting the heat for a short period to maintain comfort, and requiring less energy to do so than re-warming cold air. Set timers to warm bathrooms and living spaces an hour before you wake up in the morning and before you come home at night.

INTERACTIVE WARMTH A stainless steel radiator whose surface gives rise to an astonishing wave effect. Designed by Jean-Marie Massaud for BLOW the radiator is made of two connected metal plates which help to keep the water at a constant temperature, which offers a highly efficient source of heat. www.cordivaridesign.it GAS OR ELECTRIC CENTRAL HEATING The luxury of central heating means no closing off rooms or retreating from cold spots. Thermostats keep the house toasty, and the dry air keeps humidity and mildew at bay. Gas or electric-powered, heating can be retrofitted underfloor or in the ceiling. FIREPLACES Talk to architects, designers, manufacturers and homeowners and you’ll find that fireplaces and stoves can be found in the living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and bathroom. Just recently, architects and designers began creating a sitting room specifically for a fireplace that adjoins other rooms in their home designs. While a hearth product can add scale, color and personality to a room, before purchasing a new fireplace or stove for your existing home or designing one into your new home plans, take time to consider fuel and whether or not the hearth product is to provide heat, ambiance or both. Compared to woodburning fireplaces, gas fireplaces are cleaner and involve less work — you don’t have to tend the fire, and to turn them on or off, you can simply flip a switch or use a remote control. Gas fireplaces

64

| NOVEMBER DECEMBER

also offer flexibility in installation and more control over heat output and flame height. A see through fireplace provides warmth and charm for two rooms and a two-sided direct-vent gas fireplace can create a partial wall or peninsula to divide an area and define its use. A raised fireplace in the kitchen, even one that doubles as an oven or bread warmer, adds ambiance. And, placed just so, a portrait-sized fireplace installed at eye level is a work of art on any wall. Exaggerated shapes and new media being used in gas units are very eye-catching. Traditionalists looking for a wood heater might find masonry heaters a good solution, these heaters will heat up to 3,000 square feet, even in a room with cathedral ceilings. This is an appliance that stores heat, and because it stores heat, it operates totally differently from a wood stove or most other heating appliances. It burns very fast and very hot and once the fire is out, heat stored in the stone radiates like sunshine and warms all of the surfaces in the room.

UNDERFLOOR Under tiles, under carpet and under wood, underfloor heating keeps toes cosy and rooms dry. Make sure you use a reputable installer, as most damage is a result of bad workmanship, not faulty cables. With free running costs (but allow a few dollars a month for the circulating pump), the higher installation costs of solar in-floor heating can be recovered over the life of your house. This way, water pipes sunk deep in a concrete slab keep the house at an even temperature, although slow build up means the heat is hard to regulate. No matter what the location, upstairs, downstairs, indoors and out, there’s a heating solution to add warmth, charm and a soothing glow to any room of the house. When it comes to the best option for you, shop around for good advice from established and experienced home heating specialists, to calculate the right size and type of heat for your home and lifestyle.

Audio Systems ENJOY YOUR FAVOURITE RADIO STATIONS AND MUSIC ANYWHERE IN THE HOUSE WITH THE LATEST RADIOS, HI-FI AND INTERNET TECHNOLOGY

66

| NOVEMBER DECEMBER

here’s a music revolution going on. Digital downloads, MP3 players and the wireless streaming of music direct from the internet are rapidly becoming the norm, and the CD, which amazingly turns 31 this year, is starting to show its age. With the rise in fast wireless broadband in our homes and exceptionally sophisticated gadgets in our pockets, we have never had a greater choice of how to listen to music. From buying and downloading individual songs and albums from iTunes to listening via services such as Spotify, it’s now easy to collect or access music online without owning a physical copy. Fortunately it’s simple to update your existing music system to enjoy digital downloads and make the best of music you already own. Audiophiles recommend using different components - amplifier, CD, digital tuner and turntable - for the best sound, while interior designers favour a sleek do-it-all micro hi-fi that sits neatly on one shelf. With the latest good-looking systems you can have both designer style and all-round music capability.

BeoSound 8 Move the BeoSound 8 from room to room or hang it on a wall. All you need is a power outlet, your music player of choice (iPad, iPhone, or iPod), and a desire for real sound quality. www.bang-olufsen.com

Geneva Sound S Beautifully made and with great sound, this 30W cube, available in red, white or black, has a hidden iPod dock, clock and FM radio and comes with button feet or stand.

KODO, Pioneer Has a dual dock for iPod or iPhone and can shuffle between the two. It also plays internet radio via wireless broadband.

GETTING STARTED The easiest and cheapest way to update your audio system at home is with a micro system. Typically these include radio (FM/MW or digital DAB) and CD player in one box with separate speakers. Almost all new designs include either a socket with which you can connect an iPod or MP3 player, or a handy docking cradle. Some more advanced systems can also go online wirelessly and play songs stored on your computer or from intemet radio stations. Ideal for a small living room or bedroom, these compact units are easy to use but the cheaper versions lack detailed, room-filling sound. Also, you may not be able to plug in a turntable, or use different speakers with them, so check before buying. DOCKING STATIONS If you already have a CD player and don’t need a micro system, a dedicated

dock is the easiest way to play the songs stored on your MP3 player. Almost all docking stations are designed to fit Apple’s phenomenally successful range of media players, and many can be operated using a remote control. Just slot the MP3 player into the dock and you can instantly access all your songs. Prices start from just a few Euros for cheap portable designs, but if you’re willing to spend a little more the sound improves dramatically, as do the looks, and you’ll get extra features such as clock, radio and even the ability to stream music from internet radio stations and your home computer’s hard drive. SEPARATE UNITS For the very best sound quality, you’ll need to invest in separate audio components and build your own hi-fi. You can mix and match from different brands, or choose co-ordinated units for a more streamlined finish. Whichever route you go, you’ll need an amplifier, CD player, MP3 player cradle/cable HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

ZIKMU, PARROT Designed by Philippe Stark, these 2.5ft speakers have an iPod dock, send sound to each other wirelessly and can stream music from you computer using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

and speakers and, if you want to listen to the radio, a tuner (DAB if you want digital broadcasting). You’ll also need cables to connect it all together. SPEAKERS Gone are the days of boring black boxes; today’s speakers are either beautiful objects standing proudly on display or hidden away all together. Unless you want to watch movies in full surround sound, you’ll need just two speakers for stereo music. There is a huge selection available - from waterproof designs for the patio to tiny corner-mounted wall speakers and huge floorstanding obelisks. The choice is entirely up to you but, as a rule, the more powerful the speaker (which is measured in watts) the more detailed the sound, especially at high volume. If you want your speakers to disappear, look for flush-fitting ceiling models, designs that are disguised as picture frames, or even ones that go in the wall and can be skimmed over with plaster. It’s pointless spending thousands on audio equipment and then scrimping on cables- with good ones you can really hear the difference in quality. INTEGRATED MUSIC SYSTEMS Get your whole house wired for sound with a professionally installed audio network. If you can’t bear the thought of cables and black boxes cluttering up your home, or you just want to enjoy seamless music throughout the house, a professionally installed audio network could be the answer. Usually installed as part of wider home renovations, a fully

integrated entertainment system can pipe music along a network of hidden wires to built-in, flush-fitting speakers, or to specially designed sockets where you can plug in the speakers of your choice. You will then be able to enjoy music from your iPod in the bath if you want to, while other members of your family listen to the radio, internet radio, CDs or music files from computers in other rooms. If you’re having a party, you can compile a play list ahead of time and then play it throughout your house. It may sound complicated, but once the installation is complete the only thing you’ll need to learn is how to use the remote control. WHAT ABOUT WIRELESS? If you want to enjoy a home music network without the disruption of a full installation, you could opt for a wireless music streamer that sends songs from your iPod, internet or computer to receivers around your home. However, in a large house it may struggle with signal strength, so in this case a wired device may be a better solution.

SONOS BUNDLE 250 Stream music wirelessly to two rooms. It’s all controlled with a user-friendly touchscreen remote.

Rooms With A View PROJECT SIERRA BLANCA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID TOMS www.davidtomsphotgraphy.com

Following a significant extension, this property situated in the heart of Marbella’s prestigious area of Sierra Blanca, was bought as a 700 metre square build but now spans over 2,000 square metres across four floors. This giant is the second largest plot in Sierra Blanca sprawling a 6,900 square metre plot area. British interior designer, Camilla Tom was brought onboard to turn this huge shell into a spectacular living space. Due to the sheer size of this property, Camilla had her work cut out but nevertheless took on the challenge unperturbed sourcing furnishings from all over Europe, working with neutral tones and textures to fit in with the modern feel of the house without making it feel cold due the grand size of this very special property. The ground and first floor consist of a living room area and several reception rooms, a state-ofthe-art kitchen, large terraces, office and six individual bedrooms. The two lower levels offer luxury sports and entertainment areas with every extra amenity imaginable including a large gym, spa area, cinema and bodega. There is a separate guest lodge of 110 square metres situated within the gardens, offering optimum privacy and includes a lounge with an open-plan kitchen, two bedroom suites, terrace and private deck. Camilla comments, “When I originally viewed the property I was overwhelmed by the views and therefore my main criterion was to make sure that, from as many areas of the house as possible, you could benefit from the incredible vistas. To maximise the light and the outlook, I removed as many walls as possible and installed large glass sliding doors. Due the special nature of the plot and its location, my goal was to create the most unique villa with every luxury amenity imaginable. I wanted the style to be classic yet contemporary whilst incorporating the ultimate in modern technology such as using Aqua Vision TVs in all of the bathrooms, a Lutron lighting control system and a Crestron controlled home automation system.” To take full advantage of the panoramic views, one of the key design features incorporated into the property was to remove the domed ceiling from the room below and replacing it with a reinforced ceiling to create a 42 square metre en-suite bathroom for the master suite. The bathroom incorporated the ultimate in design and comfort including a two ton stone oval bath in which to relax and enjoy the views. Camilla placed the wash basins in the centre of the room to again be able to take advantage of the light, the views and the reflections created by the position of the mirrors. Camilla states, “The biggest design challenge I faced was the entrance hall. Due to structural issues I was limited to the changes I could make therefore in order to gain the maximum amount of light in the hall, I opened the living room into the hallway. By using glass and mirrors I opened up the whole HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

area and finished the design aspect with crystal chandeliers and wall lights to make a statement as you entered the house. This is one of the most critical design elements of any property to create an initial WOW factor. The next challenge I faced was to utilise the vast plot of land on the lower level. There was no point in putting in a normal size swimming pool so I designed a heated lagoon pool 30mx10m with a bridge with a tropical pavilion with its own bar and barbecue area as well as a cascading waterfall with a grotto and decking area.” In order to link the main house to the pool area, Camilla and her team designed and built a large extension which incorporated the gym and the spa. Camilla states, “For the spa I commissioned the designer of the Greyshot Spa in England to help with the design and specifications resulting in a state of the art spa including a rain shower and Thalasso beds sunken into the indoor pool.

To break up all the hard landscaping after having built the extension, Camilla decided to build complex water features with glass bottoms, giving natural light to the gym below as well as doubling up as a design feature for the house. Camilla comments, “Because of the fantastic weather we enjoy on the Costa del Sol, I always try and incorporate as many covered terraces as possible as this allows me to create large outdoor livings spaces.” Now complete, this property has been transformed into a truly jaw-dropping living space that allows the inhabitants to fully appreciate the incredible surroundings that encompasses it offering a wonderful and tranquil home that is luxurious throughout. Waterless gardens can be great and easier to keep BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE EVOLUTION OF OUR GARDEN Those who have read our 2011 booklet Living Well from Our Mediterranean Garden would know that our garden in Spain has been developed through several phases. Initially, the intention was to have a garden with wild and naturalised plants which required little watering, as our home was only a holiday home for six years and there were no local garden centres. The only source of purchasing plants during that time was at the nursery run by the local town council, who had a few spares to sell to the public if you had a Spanish contact. Then, when we started to write weekly and monthly columns, currently about a thousand to date, we needed to change our strategy in order to test out new plants and new ideas. During 1995 to 2002 we expanded our original book Practical gardening on the Costa which was written with the Costa Blanca/Costa del Sol News organisation (who went out of publishing to prepare for the sale of the company) into four books published by Santana Books. During this time there was a rapid expansion of garden centres resulting in a wider range of plants and chemical garden care products for sale. Unfortunately, in those days more of the plants on offer were not native to Spain and came from climatic conditions in sub-tropical countries or northern European hot houses. We naturally included support and advice to expats and Spaniards who were investing in these new imports in chapters of our books and in our weekly and monthly published columns. We like many, experimented with sub tropical flowering plants, fruits and vegetables for interest, experience and something new to write about. Then, in 1994 and 1995, the very heavy frosts made us reverse our own investments and concentrate on preserving some of our original Spanish plants in our semi-formal garden. This resulted in numerous benefits including reduced water usage, less pest problems Clodagh and Dicks books

(not that we had that many before), more plants could be propagated from seeds and cuttings, a reduced loss in young and mature plants and less time maintaining the garden, especially during this past winter, spring and summer when we experienced a long period of drought. From March to the end of September we managed to measure two centimetres of rain. Then in the third week of September when the skies opened we harvested 28 centimetres of rainfall in a day and since then there has been another five centimeters, none of which was lost. When we say not lost, we mean that the rainfall was usefully collected in rain butts from guttering, which fell from the roof into subtropical planted south facing beds which were mulched with a deep layer of stone chippings and sizeable rocks some 23 years ago. The rainwater was absorbed by deeply improved and mulched soils, ran from desert areas of the garden to planted areas along carefully contoured paths, and was prevented from running out of the plot through gateways or over terrace walls by ensuring that the entire garden was surrounded by twenty top 2 metre walls. With such precautions in place for some years and the strategic choice of planting plants which develop deep roots, our garden survived this last summer without a watering system. The practice of walking the garden every few days and only giving water, deeply not shallowly, to those plants showing signs of stress and when we thought that the plant had been persuaded to deepen the depth of it’s moisture and nutrient seeking roots. But having said that there are many things as important as plants in creating and maintaining a garden for year round outdoor living. Many people need to give more time to deciding what where when and how to plant plants. Wrong decisions are an expensive hobby these days. But there is still time to take cuttings to grow new low cost plants in situ or in a sheltered spot for planting out next year.

LIVING WELL FROM OUR MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN Dick Handscombe

GARDEN VIEWING BY TRAIN In March 2012, Dick celebrated his 75th birthday by travelling to and from the UK by train, visiting garden along the way. Valencian and Barcelonan gardens, including botanical gardens, were suffering from frost and drought conditions, equally in Paris and the UK, including the Mediterranean garden in Highgrove and then the Provence in France and Mallorca where Dick gave talks to local branches of the Mediterranean Gardening Society. Arriving back home calls to gardening friends in Greece and Australia indicated that similar long dry periods had been experienced. This worldwide vision triggered an idea and Dick’s new book. En route he had started to sketch out an article which turned into a book after a couple of days, and was recently launched on the Costa Blanca at a meeting of the Javea U3A, and at the Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living show in Estepona. The title Making Waterless Gardens a Practical Reality Worldwide is available as an Amazon Kindle e-book (with a few changes as charts cannot be accommodated). HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

They pride themselves on the fact that they use high quality fresh products such as buffalo mozzarella and truffle oil as well as offering a slightly larger pizza than you usually find in Marbella. There are around forty pizzas to choose from including vegetarian, gluten-free and crudaiolas (pizzas with raw ingredients added such as freshly chopped tomatoes in place of the standard tomato concentrate for example) and a number of interesting pasta dishes and homemade desserts to choose from also. INGREDIENTS 1kg (4-5) ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped into 1cm pieces Grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon 100g milk chocolate, roughly chopped 50g light brown soft sugar For the crumble 100g plain flour 50g butter, chilled and diced 50g light brown soft sugar 1/2 x 100g pack Waitrose Roasted Chopped Hazelnuts METHOD Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Grease 6 x 250ml ovenproof teacups or ramekins. (Don’t use your finest china cups.) In a medium bowl, mix together the pears, brown sugar, lemon zest and juice, and half the chocolate. Divide the mixture between the teacups or ramekins, spooning over any juice. To make the crumble, place the flour and butter in a medium bowl and, with your fingertips, rub together until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, hazelnuts and remaining chocolate. Spoon the crumble over the pears and press down lightly. Place the crumbles on a baking tray and bake for 35-40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve with a spoonful of Waitrose Madagascan Vanilla Ice Cream.

Arrange half of the fingerellas in the base and around the sides of a large trifle dish or glass bowl, and spoon 6 tablespoons of the reserved kirsch over the top. Scatter over half of the cherries. Break 50g of the chocolate into small pieces and place in a bowl over a pan of simmering water (do not allow the water to touch the bowl). When the chocolate has melted, remove from the heat and stir in the custard. In a separate bowl, whip the mascarpone and cream with the sugar and vanilla until smooth and slightly thickened, then spoon half the mixture over the cherries. Add the remaining fingerellas, spoon over 3 more tablespoons of the kirsch and top with the remaining cherries. Spoon the chocolate custard over and finish with the remaining cream mixture. Recipes for Home Hair-Repair TREATMENTS FOR YOUR TRESSES THAT ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

If your hair is suffering from a lack of lustre, split ends or general malaise, don’t despair. The solution might be as close as your kitchen. Here are some of the top treatments people swear by when it comes to adding life to their locks.

MAYONNAISE Want to soften hair and leave it shiny? Then mayonnaise is the conditioning condiment for you. Comb just enough mayo through your hair to coat it lightly. Then leave on for 30 minutes before shampooing out as per normal. For a deeper conditioning treatment, place a shower cap on top of your mayo-coated locks and leave on for longer (even overnight if you’re feeling extra dry). Other interesting uses? Next time you get gum stuck in your hair, rub Mayo in until the gum dissolves right out.

STRAWBERRY HAIR MASK Mash eight strawberries with one tablespoon of mayonnaise. Massage into washed, damp hair. Cover with a shower cap, then a warm towel. Wash out with a shampoo/conditioner combination. This luscious mix of rich acidic berries will leave your hair conditioned and with a rich gloss.

VINEGAR Used for centuries as health tonic, this tasty, tangy acid can help remove residue that dulls your hair. Add about a tablespoon of vinegar to your hair as you rinse it. And if you have an itchy scalp or dandruff, try massaging full-strength apple cider vinegar into your scalp before shampooing. In addition to adding shine to your hair, vinegar is also known for its skin healing properties.

AVOCADO Once you’re through with this rich hair mask you’ll be ready to take on the world. Combine an avocado, one egg yolk and a dash of olive oil and massage it through your hair. As with most of these treatments, leave on for at least 30 minutes. Then shampoo, rinse and condition as normal. And remember, even if an avocado is past its prime for your salad, you can still use it on your hair so it doesn’t go to waste.

EGGS Finally! A way to benefit from eggs’ natural proteins without the cholesterol! Crack a few eggs and beat together in bowl. After shampooing, massage through your hair and leave on before rinsing out thoroughly. This treatment should help repair or strengthen your hair follicles — leading to silkier locks with good body. Alternate ideas include whisking one egg yolk together with a dash of olive oil and 3/4 cups warm water.

Chiropractic Healing WHY CHIROPRACTIC HEALING IS SO IMPORTANT FOR THE BRAIN TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE BODY Do you know which organ controls everything in the body? If you think it is the brain, you are absolutely right. The brain controls every tissue, organ and cell, coordinating and carrying out every single function of the body. In order for the brain to communicate with the body, it needs to send messages through the nervous system which is made up of the brain and spinal cord. Subluxation (a vertebrae that is out of alignment) interferes with these messages and causes the body to work at less than 100%. At the Chiropractic Center in Estepona, their mission is to bring better health naturally to everyone, maximizing the quality of your life. Health is so much more than just not feeling pain. They are working to get you better quickly …. simple as that! Calle Carmen Laforet, Local 7, 29680 Estepona Tel. 952 79 19 96

Autumn on the Algarve

A grand five metre marble table dominates the breakfast room of Vila Joya; its antique patina reflected a long history. It was this unique piece of furniture that inspired Dr. Jung to view this stunning villa overlooking a secluded Algarve cove, whilst on holiday in Portugal. His curiosity and love of art and fine things encouraged him to see the table described by a friend. Yet in the end it was the property that was to capture his heart.

TAKE AN INDULGENT, LUXURY GOURMET & SPA BREAK THIS SEASON AND NOT ONLY EAT WELL AND GET PAMPERED, BUT BE INSPIRED TOO, WITH LUXURIOUS, DECADENT AND WARM AUTUMNAL STYLE.

30 YEARS OF HOSPITALITY Dr. Jung so loved the setting he purchased the villa in the 70s, that housed this striking table. Although a private holiday home for his family for over a decade, in 1982 Vila Joya was transformed into a world-class boutique resort, centred on fine cuisine. Portugal’s magical Algarve, with its expansive unspoilt beaches and authentic villages is a perennial favourite for discerning travellers. During autumn, when the crowds have left, this southern coast of Portugal comes into its

own. The landscape bursts into seasonal autumn colour and the skies are clear and the air fresh. LUXURIOUS YET WELCOMING At Vila Joya, recognised as one of the country’s finest boutique resorts, guests enter a privileged environment where hospitality is a refined art. Guest suites combine the radiant light and freshness of this Atlantic coast, with welcoming and indulgent tones. Snuggle up in the deep, embracing sofas, flicking through the choice of coffee table books left in each suite. Fall asleep listening to the waves breaking onto the golden beach below, and awake to sunlight filling your private terrace. Bathrooms are huge, some with double rainforest showers; and all feature Molton Brown toiletries. The property interior is relaxed and welcoming; one feels instantly relaxed and at ease. The public spaces and large suites are furnished with on-trend theatrical dark tones,

lifted by fresh orchids and fascinating details from distant travels. Dark, luxurious velvets are matched with rich hardwoods, together with European and Asian art. The entrance lobby is defined by its grand sweeping staircase, whilst the bar and dining room both have an unusual warm coloured brick vaulted ceiling. The overall feeling is luxurious yet relaxed and homely. The latest edition is the ‘Joy Jung’ spa - the perfect place to be pampered. Its unique design, featuring a stunning integrated water feature and vintage carved doors, is focused on energy flow, to help balance the senses. The therapists, all trained in Asia, are specialists in holistic and traditional Indian and Ayurvedic treatments. MICHELIN STARS However, it is probably cuisine that has been one of the major elements of the success of Vila Joya. Since the early 1990s, world famous Austrian chef, Dieter Koschina has been

responsible for the kitchen, creating dishes that have led him, in the last few years, to be rewarded with two Michelin stars. Sophisticated French cuisine is prepared with local market fresh produce as well as exceptional fish and seafood from the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Each menu is married with fine Portuguese, French and other international wines from the hotel’s designer wine cellar. This room is a master piece in its own right, a seductive space of black slate, and cascading cooling water. This hidden gem of the hotel is perfect for private wine tastings too. GOURMET FESTIVAL Each March Vila Joya hosts an International Gourmet Festival – next year’s event will run from the 8th to the 17th of March, 2013. Each year it attracts renowned award-winning and Michelin- starred chefs from across the world to cook each day. So head west, to the Europe’s magical Algarve and embrace autumn in style.

The Greatest Show on Earth THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS AURORA BOREALIS, ARE UNDENIABLY ONE OF THE MOST BREATHTAKINGLY NATURAL PHENOMENONS IN THE WORLD, AND THIS YEAR NASA HAS PREDICTED THAT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS WILL BE THE BRIGHTEST AND MOST INTENSE DISPLAY IN 50 YEARS If your “bucket list” includes first-hand sightings of the majestic Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights, nowhere on earth can nature’s most spectacular light show be better seen than in the autumn and winter skies of Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland. The mystical displays of the Northern Lights are the result of surges in solar flare activities which ionize earth’s upper atmosphere. The energy created by these collisions produces light and causes the ionosphere to glow in the form of pan-

oramic light shows along the Arctic Circle, with colours depending on the distribution of various gases and varying altitudes. On the other end of the earth, along the Antarctic Circle, the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) occur at the same time in an exact mirror image form. This year astrophysicists are predicting the most frequent, most colourful and most visually dynamic auroral displays in 50 years, and there will be no better place to view them than in northern Scandinavian, where treeless land-

scapes and clear atmosphere give way to one of the greatest shows on earth. If last winter is an indicator, we can expect a vivid show each night in colours like green, yellow, violet, pink and the rarest deep red. These natural light displays in the sky occur in the Polar Regions most frequently in a 2,500 km radius centred on the geomagnetic pole. The auroral zone extends over Iceland, northern Scandinavia, and Greenland, continuing over northern Canada, Alaska and Siberia.

2012-2013 SOLAR MAXIMUM It is thought that Northern lights displays are linked to an average 11-year solar cycle between Solar Maximum. Solar Maximum is the increased rotation speed of the sun’s magnetic field on the solar equator relative to its poles, and we are now in the period known as ‘Solar Max’. This means that sunspot activity which produces the aurora borealis is heightened, offering more chances to see the Northern Lights and this year are set to be the most intense since 1958.

Sweden plete with ice crystal chandeliers. Be assured that you won’t lose sleep whilst spending your night in an ice room (the thermal sleeping bags are particularly cosy) and that there are plenty of warm showers to be had as well as sauna facilities, a couple of bars, lounges and an excellent restaurant onsite. There is also a log-cabin style restaurant just far enough away for you to walk off your meal afterwards, with perhaps the Northern Lights illuminating your way home. When not sleeping in an ice room, there is a choice of heated accommodation: a chic ‘hotel-style’ Kaamos room for two; a two bedroom Nordic chalet or a Northern Lights chalet, which comes complete with skylights for that all-important aurora watching.

is truly memorable. There is a range of daytime activities on offer including snow-shoeing, ice fishing, boat trips for bird watching and king crab fishing, or you could explore with one of the complimentary kicksleds. Hurtigruten Coastal Voyages Hurtigruten traces the dramatic Norwegian coastline from Bergen and the southern fjords, up across the Arctic Circle, all the way to Lofoten and the top end of Europe. It is the name of the route rather than one of the collection of ships that ply it year round. On a winter voyage, as well as the variety of daytime activities and sights, the northern lights prove a big attraction - huge vistas providing the canvas for often spectacular displays.

WHEN TO SEE The best months to experience the northern lights are October through April every year, with peak visibility from December through February, preferably under a clear, cloudless sky. Usually seen between 5pm and 2am. Displays can vary in intensity and duration, shape and form having no regulation, with each display totally unique. They don’t usually exhibit for long – they may only show for a few minutes, then glide away before returning. A good display may last for no longer than a quarter or half an hour, though, if you’re really lucky, it could extend to a couple of hours or longer.

Finland There is something about the snow in Finland that makes you wonder if the locals sneak out at night and spray it with a coat of brilliant white paint – it really does seem that dazzling. It is within this wonderful scenery that you’ll find a variety of cabins to give you a genuine slice of life, Finnish style, as well as a truly splendid backdrop when searching for the aurora. HOTEL & IGLOO VILLAGE KAKSLAUTTANEN Situated in a vast fell area 300 km above the Arctic Circle, Kakslauttanen, where a collection of rustic and well-appointed cabins sit scattered amongst a pristine forest, is a mere 80 km from the Russian border. Being this far north, aurora watching has become an art and for this reason, you’ll also find a collection of ingenious glass igloos. Heated, twin-bedded and with a WC and basin, you can be tucked up in bed quite comfortably ready to watch the night sky above –

‘sleeping under the stars’ has never been so cosy. ISO-SYOTE HOTEL In the southern fells, 150 km below the Arctic Circle, dotted around a charming and secluded ski resort, these hilltop and forested cabins are also well-appointed with private saunas. There are 30 hotel rooms most with excellent view over the surrounding forest and valleys. Relax and enjoy the two spacious saunas and swimming pool, or choose your own cosy cottage to spend the night. There are 20 Kelo cottages, built as traditional Finnish style loghouses, in the middle of a beautiful snowcovered landscape just a short walk away from the hotel and the slopes. On the top of the hill 16 modern, spacious and luxurious Fjell Top cottages (with three bedrooms) are available when you travel with your family or friends.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS Before the likes of Halley and Birkeland came along with their magnetic fields and their solar flares, ancient people attributed all manner of powers and causes to the Northern Lights. • Stories of warfare are often connected to the Northern Lights. Norse legend says that the lights reflections from the shields of Valkyrie warriors carrying their slain enemies to Valhalla, the hall of the dead, while intense displays of the aurora in southern Europe – where they are seen as blood-red – have been considered to be ominous portents of war. • Scandinavian fishermen called the sightings Herring Flash as they saw them as a sign of rich catches, believing them to be caused by light reflecting off vast shoals of lively herring. • The aurora is widely connected to the game of football in Inuit legend. Some stories relate that the lights are a manifestation of human spirits

104

| NOVEMBER DECEMBER

playing football with a walrus head; others say that walrus spirits are playing football with a human skull. Some even reckon that they’re playing football with the heads of naughty children. Certain Inuit people used to rush indoors when they saw the lights, terrified the aurora would slice off their heads to use as a new ball. Others carried knives to protect themselves from the wrathful spirits. • Many legends attribute the northern lights to the spirits of the dead. In Iceland, it was believed that the spirits were trying to contact their living relatives, while in northern Canada they used to say that the lights were the spirits dancing to while away the long dark winter, and the colours were their festive clothing. • It used to be commonly believed that you could bring on the aurora by whistling to it, and that clapping would stop the show. Some

northerners thought that whistling or singing to the aurora was dangerous, however, as it enraged the spirits who might then sweep down to Earth and exact their revenge. • The English legend of St George and the dragon is thought to have originated with the aurora, and many people believe that Chinese dragon legends, too, were born following ancient displays of the Northern Lights. • Modern day myths exist too – the Japanese, one of the most scientifically advanced nations in the world, believe that babies conceived under the Northern Lights will become intellectuals. • Other indigenous people held a great respect for the northern lights which remains to this day – many older people in northern Sweden still remember to stay silent when the lights begin to dance, something passed down by generations before them.

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

The F12berlinetta THE FASTEST FERRARI EVER BUILT

The new F12berlinetta ushers in a new generation of Ferrari 12-cylinders in the form of a car that delivers unprecedented performance from an exceptional new engine, combined with innovative design that redefines classic themes along with extreme aerodynamics. This is, in fact, the most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever launched thanks to the incredibly efficient engine – in terms of mechanical, combustion and fluid-dynamics efficiency – which, together with advanced vehicle architecture, aerodynamics, components and electronic controls, guarantee unsurpassed driving involvement whatever the road or track. Ferrari’s traditional transaxle layout has been revolutionised to match the more extreme performance of the car. The wheelbase has been shortened and the engine, dashboard and seats have been lowered in the chassis, while the new layout of the rear suspension and gearbox enabled Ferrari’s engineers to make the rear volume of the car smaller. The overall result is a very compact car with a lower centre of gravity that is further back in the chassis, and a level of aerodynamic efficiency that sets new standards. Scaglietti, renowned for its expertise in aluminium materials and construction, designed an all-new spaceframe chassis and bodyshell using 12 different kinds of alloys, some of which have been used here for the first time in the automotive sector, and employing new assembly and joining techniques. has resulted in a 20 per cent increase in structural rigidity while reducing weight to just 1525 kg (70 kg less than the previous V12 coupé) with an ideal distribution between the axles (54 per cent over the rear). The F12berlinetta’s 6262cc 65° V12 engine delivers unprecedented performance and revs for a naturally-aspirated 12-cylinder. Its maximum power output is 740 CV which translates to a specific output of 118 CV/l. Torque reaches a peak of 690 Nm, 80 per cent of which is already available at just 2,500 rpm, and which provides an unrelenting surge of acceleration all the way to the 8,700 rpm limit. The engine is mated to the F1 dual-clutch transmission, which has closer gear ratios developed specifically for this car’s performance. The F12berlinetta boasts a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.1 kg/CV . Fuel consumption has been reduced by 30%, with CO2 emissions of just 350 g/km – figures which put the F12berlinetta at the top of the high-performance league. These results have been obtained by extensive research and development which focused on efficiencies of the whole vehicle: engine, aerodynamics, tyres and weights. Similarly excellent results have been obtained with the car’s aerodynamic development, thanks to the integration of the design process with extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and lengthy testing in the wind tunnel. Downforce has been boosted by 76 per cent (123 kg at 200 km/h) while drag has been significantly reduced (the Cd is

just 0.299). These results come courtesy of two new solutions. The first of these is the Aero Bridge which uses the bonnet to generate downforce by channelling air away from the upper part of the car to its flanks where it interacts with the wake from the wheel wells to decrease drag. The second is Active Brake Cooling, a system that opens guide vanes to the brake cooling ducts only at high operating temperatures, again reducing drag. The F12berlinetta’s impressive technical specifications are completed by Ferrari’s latest generation carbon-ceramic brakes (CCM3) and the evolution of the magnetorheological suspension control system (SCM-E). As is now traditional with all Ferraris, its control systems (E-Diff, ESP Premium, F1-Trac, and high-performance ABS) are all fully integrated. The result is that the new Prancing Horse 12-cylinder accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds. It also completes a lap of the Fiorano circuit in 1’23”, faster than any other Ferrari road car. Benchmark performance and maximum driving involvement are guaranteed by immediate turn-in, with smaller steering wheel angles, and increased cornering speed. Stopping distances have also been drastically reduced. The design of the F12berlinetta is a result of the collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Centre and Pininfarina and is a perfect balance of uncompromising aerodynamics with harmonious proportions interpreting the typical elements of Ferrari’s front-engined V12 cars in an original and innovative

way. A coupĂŠ with sleek, aggressive lines whose compact exterior dimensions conceal exceptional in-car space and comfort. The all-new Frau leather interior highlights the balance of advanced technology and sophisticated, handcrafted detailing. In the middle of the light and lean dashboard, there are new carbon fibre and aluminium air vents clearly inspired by the aeronautic field. The cabin has been optimised to ensure maxi-

mum usability of the interior space with additional luggage capacity behind the seats, which can also be easily reached thanks to the large aperture offered by the tail-gate. With the cockpit designed around the driver, typical of all Ferraris, the Human Machine Interface approach is emphasised, grouping all the major commands within immediate reach to guarantee maximum ergonomics for the most involving driving experience. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FROM SPECTRUM FM

Adele’s special documentary RECENTLY BROADCAST ON SPECTRUM FM AFTER A COUPLE OF HUGE ALBUMS, A STRING OF AWARD AND SELL-OUT TOURS, ADELE IS BACK WITH A BANG…

Adele’s “Skyfall”, Official Theme Song to Latest James Bond 007 Feature SKYFALL(TM), Globally Available on iTunes Now. (PRNewsFoto/Columbia Records)

ADELE: It actually feels like I’ve done nothing but it’s because of America, actually a year behind. So when I wrapped up here in the UK, America started. I was away doing that and I think everyone thought I was skiving and not doing much but then yeah, ended up with this new record which I was really worried about for a while because I didn’t have anything to write about.

When there’s a band it’s hard to say if you want to do an extra chorus and run it round, you’ve got to be able to get five plus people’s attention to run it round again, whereas when it’s acoustic you don’t have to say it, you just pick up on each other’s signal. I love it, it’s just more intimate, you know. I like being able to hear my audience breathe.

Not only did Adele have new material, she also had a new direction, building on her debut album’s success with an even bigger sound. ADELE:: You know I do still love all the acoustic stuff on my first album, but as a writer I’m quite limited in terms of writing production stuff, in terms of arrangements and layers and stuff like that. So I actually co-wrote a lot more of the record than I did on my first. The first record was about 80% of me on mu own, this one’s about 60% of me on my own. So I wanted to be a bit more blues style, which I wanted bigger productions for. I wanted to have a couple more songs that were relevant to me at my age. And off-record when I’m not singling I like to be sarcastic and cheeky and funny and I wanted that to come across with a few songs like Rolling In The Deep and Rumour Has It which have quite big productions. You know I’m trying to make a statement, I feel a lot bolder now. In terms of the sub-depth that my songs are about so I wanted a bit of “oomph” behind them.

Adele performed before the Royal Family at the Royal Variety Performance ADELE: That was really nerve-wracking, it was incredible to do such an iconic, British institution of a show… and the people who’ve done it like Better Midler, she did it and she is one of my idols so I was really nervous. I head-butted the microphone but luckily it was a wide shot, I was scared my nose would start bleeding and then I winked at Camilla! (laughs)

Adele’s not afraid of using her own work to the fullest. Someone Like You topped the chart after she performed it with just a piano to accompany her. ADELE: I actually prefer it. I prefer doing stripped down and acoustic, I find it a bit more free-ing.

Adele’s been known for getting nervous before getting onto the stage and it seems the nervousness doesn’t get easier with time ADELE: It’s like stage fright, it gets worse the more I do things. I think its because it takes a lot for me to see someone perform live. I need to be really convinced. I’m never convinced that I’m gonna put on a show for the people I’ve convinced to come along, but no I never get used to it. The whole thing is pretty surreal. Adele released her album 19 to critical acclaim. It’s been so successful that it’s been one of the top-selling albums this year as well. With such a successful first album, she must have felt the weight and expectation for her second. ADELE:: I felt very lucky because I just like making music, so the minute I got back into the stu-

TERRY UNDERHILL CHATTED TO ADELE ON SPECTRUM FM dio and got the opportunity to write again, I was so wrapped up and excited and eager that I forgot about that. No one puts pressure on me, they won’t I won’t deliver if I’m under pressure. I put the pressure on myself anyway, I know about my own perception and I know when I’m slipping off and all that, I know when I’m done doing all that someone needs to remind me of it. I was lucky enough that I immersed myself on this record so much that I didn’t really think about the successes of the last album. Also it’s not like anyone thought I was gonna do like the first album did. Anyone that works with me we’re like “yeah whatever, see what happens you know, “ so it wasn’t like it was a plan for ages to kind of sell record and win stuff. It’s never been that planned so we take it day by day. Adele made history when she occupied both the number one and number two slots in the UK album chart at the same time. She’s enjoyed phenomenal success across the World. Her new album has now been number one on ten countries. The United States have championed her and when ADELE was over there she got to do some amazing things. From chart shows to concerts to starring as herself on Ugly Betty. ADELE: Yeah, America – her, not the country – came to Saturday Night Live and I did that. She’s a fan so her and her fiancée came and she loved it. I met her afterwards and she was going, “I wanna get you on the show,” and I was just like, “yeah alright.” I was excited to see her but I was like, “yeah whatever.” I didn’t see how it was to be written into the show but thanks though, you know. The next thing I knew about six months later I was just about to go on quite a big tour in America and I played this little radio show for an American station. All the producers of (Ugly Betty) came down and they were all saying the same thing… but I was still like, “yeah whatever. Nice to meet you, thanks for coming, love the show.” Next thing I knew I was invited onto the show. I was going to play at Daniel’s wedding and initially I was a bit like, “Oh no, I don’t want to do it,” because I always get confused when other artists or actors or whatever start dipping their toes into other kinds of things, but of course you shouldn’t say no and I didn’t. I got offered it and - it’s off the air now – I love that show. I did it, but I wasn’t allowed to speak on it because you have to have an acting Visa. I didn’t have one, I think they blagged it and then I ended up speaking on it. I sounded like an American putting on a British accent, I was so self-conscious. It was incredible but it was a really long, long day. I was just nervous the whole time, it was incredible. All of this is more proof that Adele is no stranger to hard work. ADELE: I like being busy, my personal life’s brilliant.

TERRY UNDERHILL: Two and a half years ago we’d never heard of ADELE. Only your family and your friends had. When you were going through the Brit school did you know you were different to all the other talented people there? ADELE: No, the teachers hated me, they preferred another singer. I think its because I’m a bit mouthy (laughs) TERRY UNDERHILL: But obviously you got signed quite quickly. ADELE: Yeah, very quickly. TERRY UNDERHILL: The World took you into their hearts… ADELE: Yeah, it turned out that people had been watching me on my MySpace which I didn’t set up, my friend set it up, he was like Mr MySpace UK. I think he’d been getting emails saying “just give it a couple of weeks and I think (ADELE) will take over the MySpace” And that couple of weeks I was just finishing college and within three days I was at my record label meeting them. I thought I was gonna go up and do A&R, I’d initially thought that was what I was gonna end up doing because who becomes a professional singer? There’s not many of them, are there? And then they wanted to sign me so I was just flabbergasted, it was wicked. TERRY UNDERHILL: That Bob Dylan song that you did… you gave it a different dimension to Bob Dylan’s version and that’s unusual because usually the person who writes it can do that. What do you think about when you’re performing that song? ADELE: Sometimes I think about my mum and how much I love her. Sometimes my mind wanders off and I’m imagining I’m in IKEA and at the moment I’m really happy so I’m thinking of a fella I like! TERRY UNDERHILL: What made you pick a Bob Dylan song? ADELE: Do you know what… Make You Feel My Love wasn’t my idea, it was my manager’s. We were in New York and we just stayed in and he played me this song and I really liked the sound of it so I Googled the lyrics and the lyrics were so beautiful and you couldn’t hear them when Bob Dylan sings it. Originally it was going to be a B side or an iTunes exclusive. It was just for someone if they wanted to listen to how stunning the song is. The old stuff was just a bit too iconic to cover – I don’t think you should touch a song that has a life of its own already. People thought I wrote it which is very flattering – as if I could write a song like that! TERRY UNDERHILL: Without wanting to be cruel to Bob Dylan and his fans, he just moans in the song! ADELE: He originally wrote it for a woman to sing

it and she never sang it so I think he was quite pleased when I sung it. I heard it was his second favourite version of the song after his own. He’ll get a healthy cheque after X Factor – ha ha ha! TERRY UNDERHILL: M Stewart asks, “When did you realise that you had a voice and then decide on attending the Brit School?” ADELE: Well I started singing out loud when I was about eleven or twelve and it was around the summer that Pop Idol started. At the auditions you’d get parents saying, “My daughter’s the next Mariah or Whitney Houston” and then they’d go into the audition room and they were awful. My mum used to say, “You can really sing, you can really sing” but I didn’t believe them and never really rated my voice. The only reason I went to the Brit School was because I was going to fail all my academic GCSEs. I knew I was going to at least pass my music exam because I love music, I’m such a huge fan of it and all I wanted to do is learn about it and I knew I’d do all the coursework, do the performances and try my best, whereas in maths and English, I’d just be around the back having a fag or something! So the first time I realised that this was quite serious is when I got signed. TERRY UNDERHILL: Michelle Mosford asks, “Were you nervous performing in front of royalty at the Royal Variety Performance?” ADELE: Oh my God did you see those high heels I was in? I head-butted the mic! I was scared my nose was going to bleed but luckily it was a wide shot so you didn’t see it. I was really really nervous. NDubz were there going, “Yeah we’ve done this before...” and all of that. I was a bit embarrassed that I was more nervous than they were! Anyway I went on and head-butted the mic and in rehearsal they teach you how to curtsey and if you want to learn properly, they show you. So I bowed to the crowd and pulled my skirt a bit for Prince Charles and Camilla and Camilla was laughing so I winked at her and then I got on stage and was just waiting to be arrested or something! She giggled – she seems quite a laugh that woman! No but seriously, I was really nervous because I’m a massive fan of the royal family. My Nan nearly had a heart attack when I told her that I was doing it. TERRY UNDERHILL: But I bet your family were proud though? ADELE: They were. My Nan was tearful. TERRY UNDERHILL: Ah well it’s a big moment. ADELE: I wanted to meet that Kate Middleton as she seems quite a laugh. TERRY UNDERHILL: I have an email here from Melissa who asks, “Who inspired you?” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES |

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW FROM SPECTRUM FM

ADELE It’s a cross between Etta James, who’s my favourite singer ever, the Spice Girls, as their showmanship is what I like (not to say I’ve got much showmanship!), and my mum, as she always encouraged me and always said: do whatever you want to do because if you’re happy, I’m happy.

The “S” one with the sports drive thing so you can zoom off. She needed a new car. She dropped me off at Jonathan Ross in 2008 in a banged up old KA and all the paps were there and I got out the car and the seatbelt fell off so I was just a bit embarrassed so I thought it was time for an upgrade!

TERRY UNDERHILL: What song are you most proud of? ADELE I’d probably say “Someone Like You” as when I wrote that I stopped being bitter about my last relationship and that was the most grown-up thing I’d ever done - to not hold a grudge! It kind of really changed me even when I listen back to the demo and it kind of really moves some people that I meet and they take it into their own way of thinking and it seems to help them. It’s kind of about the loss of my ex, who I still hate - so it’s not really that much of a loss(!), but it’s very representative of properly losing someone and finding some comfort in it. It’s my most mature song.

TERRY UNDERHILL: Are you an extravagant person now? ADELE Not really. I just do really love a bag!

TERRY UNDERHILL: It is bereavement when you lose somebody and you can’t enjoy the highs until you’ve experienced the lows. ADELE Yeah! TERRY UNDERHILL: What is the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought? ADELE I’ve got an obsession with bags. I dress like a tramp but I love a bag! I can’t drive but I bought my mum an Audi, second hand – not full price – you lose money as soon as you take it out on the road!

TERRY UNDERHILL: What about luxury holidays? ADELE I don’t like flying so the last thing I want to do is get in an aeroplane though I did go to a nice spa for a couple of days but then I don’t like people touching me!!! TERRY UNDERHILL: How do you cope when you meet people now that everywhere you go everyone knows who you are? Two years ago, nobody knew who you were! How do you cope with that? ADELE Well I usually don’t wear my eyelashes and pull my hair back. Really... if I don’t wear full ADELE make-up, no one really recognises me. If I do go out, I just have to be as welcoming and as excited as other people are. TERRY UNDERHILL: People are pleased to see you though aren’t they? ADELE Yeah it’s only nice... I’ve been really lucky actually as I’ve never had anyone come up and say anything horrible.

TERRY UNDERHILL: What was the last album you bought? ADELE It was either Take That or Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday. I love her, she’s fun isn’t she?! TERRY UNDERHILL: Which song would you love to cover that you haven’t written yourself obviously? ADELE Well I’ve got another cover on this album where I did a Cure song, but the original idea was to do Never Tear Us Apart by INXS - it’s such a beautiful song. I got a bit scared as it’s so iconic. I was searching for other people’s covers of it but never really found any that have ever been released or anything - just great people on You Tube doing their own little thing. I did cover it when I was recording in Malibu - which was rubbish by the way... it really was! I just couldn’t do it justice like how Michael Hutchence sings it. So I didn’t want to do it. TERRY UNDERHILL: But did you do it completely differently? Because if you listen to Bob Dylan singing Make You Feel My Love and then yours, they are totally different songs... ADELE Yeah...it’s the same instrumentation but just played a bit differently. If I was INXS, I would be gutted if I covered it, so we abandoned that idea. I would like to do it justice at some point in my career or at karaoke or something! TERRY UNDERHILL: Which song that you’ve not written do you wish you had written?

ADELE: Bonnie Raitt’s I Can’t Make You Love Me. I sing it on the toilet, I sing it in cabs, I sing it in bed – it makes me cry. TERRY UNDERHILL: George Michael did a great cover of that. Are all of your albums going to be named after your age? Your first one was called “19”, the next was called “21”... ADELE: I don’t know... Well my first album was called “19” because of my age and stuff, and when I was doing interviews about it people kept saying, “Is your next album going to be called 21?” So I was trying to think of another title but couldn’t think of anything. Rolling In The Deep would have been a bit of a mouthful for many Europeans – it’s enough for anyone British! TERRY UNDERHILL: But if you’re still doing this when you’re 70, will we have an album called 70? ADELE: Yeah but I’ll be dead by then with the amount I smoke! TERRY UNDERHILL: Who would you like to duet with? Living or dead but I guess I’d rather them be alive... ADELE: I guess I’d say Carole King – I really love her - I think she’s really brilliant. I remember being little and I knew of Tapestry from the minute I was born because my mum loved her and it just seems like one of those albums that’s completely timeless and like, in your DNA. I remember hearing amazing songs like You’ve Got A Friend, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and Actual Woman and all these iconic artists are singing her songs, and she wrote them all. That Tapestry album... she played everything on her own on it – she pretty much produced it on her own. I love her. Copywrite TERRY UNDERHILL.
