Summer Sun & You We can help you get the perfect summer silhouette.
Temperatures are rising, everybody is rushing to get tanned and fit before summer comes, to fit into those tiny bikinis, short dresses and the gorgeous summer clothing. But with all your efforts in the gym this spring, are there still those stubborn bits of fat on your hips and stomach which stand in the way of your perfect summer silhouette? A small, superficial liposculpturing procedure, carried out under sedation or even local anesthesia can eliminate this persistant fat fast and with almost no downtime. The treatment is done as an out-patient procedure, and most patients can return to normal life and work after 3 days. A compressive garment should be worn under your normal clothes for 2-3 weeks and you must use sun protection afterwards for 2-3 months to prevent pigmentation. 4 weeks after the surgery we recommend that you work out on a regular basis to keep your new shape until next summer.

EDITOR’S NOTE > We constantly hear that the Costa del Sol is synonymous with “quality of life”. Its climate, location and cosmopolitan ambience contribute to making it a coast line with international appeal, a unique place and an area that contains the largest ex-pat community in Europe. Not everyone associates quality of life with unbeatable weather, but rather with muticulturalism, relaxation, entertainment, outdoor activities and luxury — summertime is just this. The volume rises everywhere – kids are out of school, music wafts across from outdoor concert venues, parties and festivals, and it’s hard to find parking near the beach. Here at Home & Lifestyle, we love summer, not only because we have a bumper issue, but it’s the season when our favourite beach clubs are in full swing, and we encourage you to put on your Dolores Cortés swimwear featured in this issue, and add their events on your summer list. In our home section we relax and rejuvenate with Patricia Urquiola’s new designs for Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe AG, and talk with Cati Casasola to reveal the secret of how to make a home come alive. Summer isn’t summer without being able to step outside in to your own personal oasis and this issue shows you how best to achieve this, and give it a light and modern touch with minimalist furniture. This Summer we encourage our readers to head to Gibraltar to experience this vibrant little part of Britain that offers the spirit of the Mediterranean, and as a cost effective alternative to the UK during the season of high airline fares. We also travel to greater heights passing the Pyrenees on the way to Mont Blanc. Enjoy the fantastic weather, the varied gastronomic offerings along the Costa del Sol, the weekends with family and friends and of course the Summer issue of Home & Lifestyle.

Beautiful Kitchens, Fitted Beautifully Quote … “We wanted a bespoke design but some of the prices we were quoted from kitchen companies were extortionate” says Sonia, a satisfied Kitchens by Top Design client. “We were getting desperate, and had heard so many horror stories of people living in chaos without a kitchen for three months or more while the new one was fitted, and with small children we didn’t want that.’ So they were delighted to be recommended Kitchens by Top Design by a friend. As soon as Terry and Sonia walked into the showroom, they knew that the company was right for them. Their final decision … simple shaker cream units in a classic style with solid oak work tops. … “solid oak doesn’t need much maintenance, but always looks good” quotes Sonia. Kitchens by Top Design pride themselves in fitting kitchens to the highest standards, paying attention to all the little details including being able to supply a vast variety of kitchens to choose from. 19 City Mill Lane, Gibraltar. The Costa del Sol has a perfect climate, but when it rains it rains and most of the homes along the coast do not have adequate protection. This is mainly due to the issue being overlooked or not being cost effective during the construction phase. Problems that occur can include: • Terraces or roofing have not been totally waterproofed against the elements. • Humidity by capillarity (where the humidity comes from the ground up the walls). This occurs in constructions without any floor isolation or built directly on the ground, the humidity finds its way up. Both options can be solved in different ways: • The easy way is by painting the problem area each year and living with it. But this will indirectly cost you more money in the long run – the situation will only get worse over the years. • The best and only way to beat the humid-
ity problem is by having a specialised company analyse your problem that will resolve your situation. There are several solutions, guarantees can be offered, and although the price is initially higher then the first solution, the problem is gone forever. Waterproofing your home and eradicating the humidity problem should be seen in an long-term investment, without worrying about the health issue humidity causes or affect any buyers interest in purchasing your property. VIP Homes offers a specialised service where all their installations are guaranteed in writing for 10 years, and in some cases up to a 30 year GUARANTEE, on materials and installation. This means that your humidity problems can disappear forever. Contact: Miguel Ruiz Manz, Manager VIP Homes mail@viphomes.es www.viphomes.es

Imperial Outlet is an independent Dutch company with over 30 years experience in the furniture business in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Romania. And in February last year is opened its first major outlet furniture shop in Spain. Imperial Outlet understands the need to provide customers with a good quality mix of furniture at affordable and attractive prices. Quality remains the top priority and is reflected in what is stocked and sold in the store. The products are mainly supplied from the Netherlands and because Imperial can command the best purchase prices and keep margins tight they are able to retail at some of the lowest prices around. Imperial stocks not only carry new furniture collections but also offer a large selection of outlet furniture brought through stores in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium and England. Outlet furniture is sourced at extremely low prices allowing Imperial to sell up to 70% below the recommended retail price. A wide range of leather and fabric sofas are to be found in stock as are a range of mirrors, paintings and decorative items, in fact they have so much within the store that it is impossible to display everything on the web site, so a visit to the shop is a must! New stock and special promotions are constantly changing, often weekly, and Imperial claim to be not only one of the best, but also one of the cheapest outlets on the Coast. Their philosophy is to have everything they sell in stock and on display. Go in and choose what you want with no waiting for it to come into stock. But it today, have it delivered tomorrow! Due to continued success Imperial have expanded and doubled their retail space to 3,000 square metres in February 2011 www.imperialoutlet.com

Shona art from Zimbabwe Exhibition DATE: 16TH JUNE TO 16TH JULY VENUE: EL CAMPANARIO GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB In Living Colours from Switzerland presents Shona sculpture of Zimbabwe is the most important contemporary art in South Eastern Africa and is a cultural marriage of traditional African art and contemporary international sculpture. The artists do not attempt to depict things, but the soul of things, as their religion and traditional beliefs enables them to contact the dead which is reflected in their sculptures. Their roots obviously reach far into the history of their country and beyond, drawing life from age-old beliefs. Their work is consistent with their belief, that the spirit in the stone should be realised in the sculpture. Stone, a material also flavoured by classical western sculptures, stimulates the artist’s vitalism, and encourages the composition of masses as well as the monumentality of their relationships. The stone used for the sculptures are mainly: Spring stone, Fruit Serpentine, Dolomite, Opal stone, Lemon Opal stone, Butter Jade and Verdite. In Living Colour art is accessible to all, their sculptures range from 95 euros for a smaller piece from a lesser known artist to around 8,000 Euros for a large piece from a world renowned artist. We can supply columns for indoor use (made out of wood and painted in the colour of your choice) or for outdoor use (granite or marble). Prices are according to sizes required. Each piece includes a certificate of authenticity and most pieces are accompanied by a biography of the artist.

When was the last time you looked into booking a resort vacation for your family or simply took a moment to consider the costs? Roundtrip airfare, lodging, dining, resort wear bought before (and during) your trip and that’s just the beginning of an inevitably long list. Wouldn’t it be nice to invest that money into something that will last longer than eight days and seven nights? As high-end property values continue to stumble, for many long time homeowners it makes more sense to upgrade an existing home than deal with buying and selling in a stagnant housing market. And, as the outdoor living industry continues to explode with so many new options and amenities, investing in an outdoor entertainment area may just offer the most enjoyable return for your money, especially when you consider the convenience of creating a vacation destination in your own garden. Outdoor decorating has become a huge trend for home owners. Outdoor rooms complete with fluffy couches, fabrics and sometimes even beds. Their creations are beautiful that makes your porch, patio and garden completely functional and a bit luxurious as well.
INDOORS OUT By blurring the lines between the indoors and the outdoors you get the best outcome. Continue your already established colour scheme by bringing some of those colours into your outdoor furniture. Outdoor-safe fabric has changed throughout the years and it’s much more attractive and comfortable than it once was. To get something that will really complement and match your existing décor you will probably have to make your own or have custom-made upholstery for your outdoor furniture. Paint flowerpots to match and then use potted flowers and plants on both the inside and outside to bring it all together. DEFINE YOUR SPACE Your space may already be defined by the borders of your patio, deck or terrace but by separating them even more from the actual garden you create a room that is more connected to your home. Establish decorating borders with fences, benches, potted plants, or stones to better define what you consider outdoor living and “wilderness”.

EMBRACE FABRICS As mentioned above, the fabrics that are outdoor-safe are much different than their ancient predecessors. Look for a lot of colours or bright colours so you can create some inviting excitement that draws people to the area. Add table linens, throw pillows, upholstery and anything else you can think of to add beautiful vibrant fabrics to your décor. STURDY FURNITURE Opt for comfortable sturdy outdoor furniture that provides good support and looks great. No more plastic lawn chairs from the 1980s but substantial furniture that looks good enough for the inside. This is an investment that should pay off for you over time as it will last longer and hold its shape superbly. THE GROUND BELOW If you really want to add some luxury to your terrace, deck or patio, pay attention to the ground. If you’re outside you’ll have to clean it often to keep it looking good, if you’re inside add some soft throw rugs to cushion your feet. Go a step further and have some fantastic tile or stone slabs installed to give your extra room a formal feel. ADD LIGHTING Add some unexpected lighting with beautiful sconces, lamps, lanterns or even chandeliers. You can opt for electrical lighting or candle lights but having a good light source extends the hours of use you have with your outside room. >>

THINK LUXURY You don’t want to put anything too valuable outside, nor do you want to have something that is too fragile exposed to the elements, but you can find items that look expensive and feature details that make them feel luxurious. Treat yourself and your family to the little luxuries that they will love and that will keep them interested in an outdoor room (grilling anyone?). Be practical when establishing your outdoor room by taking advantage of improvements in weather-resistant materials and buying modern styles that are sturdy and rugged. Try to continue your indoor decorating scheme whether in a large way or a simple continuation of color or theme, this will give your outdoor space a more inviting interior appeal. Finally, keep it cozy and convenient. No matter how much you spend making it look incredible, no one will use your outdoor room if it’s uncomfortable, unappealing and impractical. MAKE IT MORE THAN A POOL Outdoor eating areas with big screen TVs and fireplaces can truly make your outdoor area usable and enjoyable year round, but it’s the pool that steps up the fun quotient. What does it take to create a pool that makes your whole family feel like they’re on a never-ending vacation? Consider the features that stand out in your mind when you think back to the last resort pool you played in. Here aresome favourite picks for creating a pool that rivalsthe best resorts. • Shallow beach areas with sandy bottoms are a great place for toddlers to play or adults to relax. Built-in boulders can be strategically placed for seating or smaller stones can be used for steps. • What about a “cuddle cove?” A quiet, intimate spa area that opens to the pool yet remains private, thanks to a few carefully placed boulders. • Hot spring waterfalls can warm up a spa by delivering hot water in a controllable volume, much like a natural hot shower. Waterfalls in general can add an adventurous element to any pool and can be designed for a variety of uses. Stone benches can be built directly under a cascading waterfall or for those who prefer, behind a waterfall for a grotto-like setting.

• Decorative rocks and boulders can transform an ordinary pool into something that looks like a natural swimming hole on a tropical island. Rock formations that extend from the bottom of a pool to far reaching heights not only create a dramatic visual effect, but offer several practical benefits too. Man-made boulders can be “molded” to create convenient and comfortable seating within the pool that is barely noticeable from above, and smooth boulders above the water line, although eye-catching, are not obvious when it comes to their intended purpose as sunning stones, jumping rocks or even water slides. When professionally designed, the placement, size and purpose for each and every boulder is carefully planned to create visual balance and multiple entertainment areas throughout the pool area. Decorative boulders can even be used to create highly effective erosion control walls when pools are built into steep hillsides and they’re much more attractive than typical retaining walls. • Care for a margarita? Swim-up bars are a great way to bring everyone together, no matter if they’re in the water or out. With a raised-waterline design people can have a face-to-face discussion whether they’re relaxing on underwater seating or tending bar. • Decorative island rocks not only lend to that tropical feel of a natural swimming hole, but provide the perfect place for a shade umbrella or directional lighting on a waterfall or other decorative element of the pool. Island rocks can also become a focal point of a pool when surrounded by a shallow-tidepool beach area. So the next time you think about escaping to a tropical resort, take a moment to think how nice it would be if instead of filing through security checkpoints and boarding lines you could simply step outside your own back door. “Why fly?”

design. Produced starting from the late 19th century, modern furniture was tremendously different from all that had come before – ornate became simple, heavy became light, traditional materials often changed to contemporary, incorporating glass, metals, different woods and man-made materials. Innovative materials and manufacturing methods, new European design philosophies, exotic overseas influences and creativity of the artists and designers of the era all contributed to what modern furniture looks like today. In addition to materials like plastic and fibreglass, warm and strong teak wood became popular in modern furniture, largely due to Danish influence. Teak also proved an ideal background for the new shapes, colours and textures of other modern pieces and accents. White gained appeal, both as a colour for furniture and for accents that tied together the new looks. The great modern furniture designers of the past continue to hold their influence today. Not only are their originals collected and handsomely paid for, but their design is emulated and sometimes directly copied because patents have expired.

PARED DOWN FURNITURE FOR PRACTICAL TIMES Modern furniture was popular during the Great Depression because it addressed the need for simplicity without sacrificing comfort. Perhaps now, in this period of recession, it will gain in populist appeal because of its beauty, practicality and affordability. Kristina Wilson, author of Livable Modernism: Interior Decorating and Design During the Great Depression, points out how designer Russel Wright produced an obtainable, attractive line of European modern furniture, tableware and linens in the 30s, and in the 40s, Charles and Ray Eames manufactured sought-after furniture and other products from plastic, resin and plywood. Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture at the Museum of Modern Art, believes today’s designers will rise to the occasion. “What designers do really well is work within constraints, work with what they have,” she says. Terrific design, durability, affordability and of course “green” qualities in one form or another (timeliness of design, recycled or reclaimed materials) will be the hallmarks of the new modernist furniture. And let’s not forget the quality of lightness. The minimalist design and materials of many modern pieces add an airy, uplifting quality to today’s interiors and are perfect for down-sized living spaces. In addition, they are light enough to be moved around from room to room or dwelling to dwelling, often by one person.

AXOR URQUIOLA — A BATHROOM FOR THE SENSES
Old and new merge together wonderfully. Each element has its own charm. Personal items fit into the environment as though by chance, creating a feel of a personal bathroom. A sense of harmony arises from the highly refined products and finely detailed design. For example, through the Axor Urquiola bath, which resembles an old-fashioned wash tub, or the Axor Urquiola paravent, which doubles up as a room partition and a radiator. A collection that inspires you to live out your own bathroom dream The bathroom forms part of the living space – this view is gaining popularity. Architects and interior designers are increasingly discovering the bathroom as a space calling out for good design, and creative bathroom planners are leading the way in demonstrating what functionally and aesthetically pleasing bathrooms can look like. Certainly the bathroom is no longer merely the functional “wet area” in a house. Instead, it has become a place of wellbeing that expresses the aesthetic preferences of the individual inhabiting the space, the person who wants to enjoy a sensual experience of water at the same time as satisfying various needs – be it a period of rest to recharge energy, to retreat, or to communicate with his or her partner. The change in meaning that the bathroom is undergoing is also reflected in the trend towards a blending of the sleeping and bathroom areas. The idea of

turning two separate rooms into one, of merging of the two most intimate living spaces, is increasingly finding favour. The Axor Urquiola collection offers a diverse range of exceptional suggestions and individual solutions for designing the modern wellbeing bathroom. The collection was developed jointly by Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe AG, and Patricia Urquiola. She is convinced that what women want in the bathroom dif-

HOME DESIGN > fers from what men want, and that women would therefore design bathrooms differently. In conceptualizing her collection for Axor, Patricia Urquiola asked herself the kinds of questions any woman would ask: “What do I want to show of myself and what would I rather not? What do I want to keep private and what do I want to share with my partner?” RETREAT AND COMMUNICATION Her answers: A separate wash table, as an individual retreat just for myself, at a distance from the partner, but close enough to communicate. Two bathtubs installed side-byside make it possible to have a bath for one without requiring a giant tub big enough for two to be filled with water – while still allowing the bathing experience to be shared with the partner in the neighbouring tub, but with each being able to have the water temperature set at their preferred wellbeing level. SEPARATION AND OPENNESS Just as the wash stations are designed so as to create different areas that serve as private zones while still allowing communication, natural “filter zones” near the windows emphasize the bathroom’s function as a private retreat, separated from the outside world, but not completely cut off from it. Patricia Urquiola proposes a three-fold structure for these “filters”: a louvre mounted directly against the window, arrangements of plants, and glass screens that can opened like sliding doors. The various areas within the room – for example, the shower recess, the bath, the sleeping and make-up areas – are separated by plants, by glass screens imprinted with graphic patterns, or by a paravent from the Axor Urquiola collection that also serves as a radiator and as a mirror. Semi-transparent glass surfaces, paravents that partly obscure and partly reveal to the observer what may lie hidden behind them: Patricia Urquiola uses all these elements to revisit the eternal question, namely of how much of ourselves we choose to reveal or conceal. AESTHETICS AND FUNCTION As recently as February this year, the wall-mounted wash basin from the Axor Urquiola collection was honoured with the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, the most prestigious design prize awarded in that country. As is true for many of the elements in this collection, this product also serves two separate functions: the openings in the side walls of the functionally and aesthetically pleasing wash basin are not only reminiscent of the handles found on traditional wash tubs; they also serve the very practical purpose of holding hand towels. The same goes for the standard mixers: emerging from the main body are receptacles for a tooth mug or a soap dish. If Patricia Urquiola is hailed as a master of the “mixing & melting” approach to design, it is not least due to the way Axor Urquiola succeeds in blending form and function, as well as merging various styles and areas such as living and bathing in a most aesthetically pleasing fashion. And thanks to the collection’s strong emphasis on blending various styles and even harnessing ostensibly opposing principles, it is ideally suited for use in a range of differently styled settings. www.hansgrohe-int.com

Casasola Muebles is synonymous with design, quality and price of high design furnishings. What differentiates the products and services of Casasola from other local décor companies? At Casasola we offer a high quality design product to our clients together with a personalised service with help from highly qualified professionals who have many years of experience in the sector, not only in sales, but also specialists in distribution and installation. Our goal is to make life easier and we hope to achieve this (Cati says, smiling). This is a turnkey service, including delicate matters such as refurbishments, painting, cleaning and custom made furniture; all this makes the furnishing project become a reality. I think what most customers’ value is the facility of finding everything in one shop, bringing together different styles and budgets served entirely suited to their needs. We have also developed at Casasola, an installation department for large projects such as hotels, country houses, or kitchen-plan construction. To undertake this type of work we offer quality products at prices that a large installation requires.
Casasola KNOWN AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED NAMES IN ANDALUCIA’S INTERIOR DESIGN SECTOR, CASASOLA MUEBLES HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR THEIR HIGH QUALITY FURNITURE AND DECORATION FOR ALL AREAS OF THE HOME. HOME & LIFESTYLE VISITS THE CREATIVE MINDS OF FOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL BOTHERS, FOUNDERS OF CASASOLA MUEBLES, AND TALK TO CATI CASASOLA, WHO REVEALS HER SECRET ON HOW TO MAKE A HOME COME ALIVE. Spain has always been at the forefront of design with its rich artisan culture. How did Casasola Muebles begin? As you mentioned, our company came about from that ‘rich traditional artisan culture’ that characterises Spain. Casasola Muebles is a totally family-run company. Our origins date back to the time of my grandfather who had a great love for handmade furniture — a love that he passed down to his four children, who, after learning this art, founded Casasola Muebles. With hard work and determination we have managed to expand the business within the province of Malaga. Today, Casasola Muebles is managed by the family’s third generation under his watchful eye. We currently have four showrooms throughout the Malaga district with a variety of products, styles and prices enabling us to always offer our customers “furniture that you can live passionately with.”

Given the multicultural environment found in Marbella, it must be very different than other markets. What makes Marbella clientele so unique? Indeed, Marbella is a multicultural city offering a mixture of clientele with varied tastes. For this reason, Casasola offers furniture in all styles: classical, modern or colonial décor, to suit a magnificent palace in Marbella or a bright and cheerful beach apartment. To do this, we visit the major national and international trade fairs which exhibit the latest trends keeping us always in the forefront. For example, since 1982 our clients have included Arab royalty, politicians, footballers, renowned entrepreneurs and many other clients of Spanish and International origin. Of course, this motley clientele keeps a common factor, a taste for quality, and quality is the main characteristic of Casasola Muebles.
Casasola has collaborated with many clients over the years. What have been some of the most original projects you have been involved with? I would firstly like to emphasise, that at Casasola all our projects are original and that’s precisely where the secret of our service lays. We pay the same attention to all of them. We’ve decorated hotel, apartments for BBVA, houses in London as well as stately homes in Sierra Blanca, and many others. But if I had to highlight one, it would be the project for a Palace belonging to a princess from the royal family in Abu Dhabi; not due to its size, which was impressive, but more so for what happened which I can summarise now. “The project in Abu Dhabi was extensive, resulting in my father, Antonio Casasola, and my cousin, José Carlos Casasola, only returning back to Spain on Christmas Eve for our traditional family dinner. Unfortunately, they were unable to arrive on time, so we celebrated alone. Only the next day, Christmas Day, we celebrated dinner all over again! But this time all together as a family.” (Cati Casasola smiles nostalgically) What is the secret of Casasola’s success in today’s décor and furnishing market? I think our secret is the fact that we haven’t changed factors like service and quality despite the market trend in last recent years, mainly due to the crisis. Many companies have opted for reduced services, or seek lower-quality products focusing their marketing strategy solely on pricing policy. At Casasola, we maintain our firm belief that clients want to live to the full and enjoy their home, therefore, in Casasola, sparing no effort on our behalf, we help you achieve all this with highly personalised advice and a wide variety of products which will leave you completely contented. “At Casasola we love to see happy people.”

Small and Sexy Modular Living Words by Patricia Sendin and Jorge Alonso Rodríguez
Modular living, the upgraded wording for prefabricated homes, is finally on the spot. Small and sexy homes have started popping up in stunning locations, looking so incredibly cool that in relatively no time they have become the ultimate object of desire. The success of these houses hasn’t caught anyone by surprise: the soaring home prices, the continuing barriers to access financing and the disappearing of the nuclear family have contributed to rethink the traditional living model and to look at alternatives. The early adopters, a breed of professionals looking for exciting living,

thank the possibilities offered by the new information technologies and argue that without the facilities given by employers regarding working by home, living remotely wouldn’t be a reality. In this context, imagine a house that costs a little more than a car, it is delivered in a few weeks, doesn’t require planning permission, adapts to the owners changing needs, has a beautiful design and can be placed anywhere you like. Sounds like the housing world could be on your side again. If the house then comes with the added bonus of being completely independent in terms of services your options of where to live become incommensurable. Architects have done their homework, teamed up with manufacturers and come up with an interesting range of products. There is a prefab home for every taste and budget. But what would happen if this concept of “affordable living anywhere you want” became so successful that it turned to be the rule for housing rather than the excep-

Ego Modulo by Bizkaia based firm Egoing www.egoin.com tion? According to the IPPR (Institute for Public Policy Research) the UK will face an estimated home shortage of 750,000 by 2025. Imagine for a moment that every citizen in need of a house would buy or lease such a planning-permit-free-home and in line with their acquired rights, would place it anywhere he’d liked to: urban holes, green field sites, roof tops of existing buildings. How many of these homes could a rural landscape take and still preserve its beauty? What would happen to the urban fabric? Would we still want to go to nature to relax if it was full of small man made structures? An extreme example of this can be witnessed in post-disaster Haiti where many temporary homes (mainly tents) have been placed out of towns creating new settlements following no particular planning other than being efficiently align in rows. The emergency of the situation and the temporary nature of the shelters have in this case justified the lack of planning. We do know however that although the term “temporary” implies either an upgrade or demolition followed by new construction, in reality it doesn’t mean more than an option rarely executed. Temporary becomes permanent in a short time. An informal settlement turns into a town sooner than we think it would. And if planning has been neglected or omitted, the town hardly catches up at a later stage. The new town becomes an unsustainable place where distances are big, communal transport and infrastructure inexistent and working opportunities rare. The lesson to be learnt from the emergency tented camps is that no matter how temporary a structure might be, a few serious thoughts have to be given about its context. A mere matter of volume: one sin-
gle structure randomly placed is no issue, 20,000 are. So how shall temporary structures be organised and where? Before answering this it is worth revisiting what temporary living may mean nowadays. Is a nomadic lifestyle still desirable? Long time ago there wasn’t an alternative: populations had to move around to protect themselves from enemies and to guarantee their food supply. There are still some communities that move around following their livestock or hunting such as the Tuaregs in the Sahara, the Eskimos and certain populations in Central Asia. Other 21st Century nomads include the so-called Gypsetters, upmarket neo-hippies in search for creative travel experiences in remote parts of the world. The term was invented by American reporter Julia Chaplin Hangar Prefab by Hangar Architecture www.hangar-architecture.com

55
(gypsy + jet-set) and refers to artists, fashion designers, photographers, musicians and surfers, “whose work is based on and reflected in their lifestyle and whose lifestyle is based on and reflected in their work”. Although Gypsetters spend time in remote locations, their activity is still bound to major cities. With the exception of these communities, the rest of the population moving around in search of work opportunities or escaping disasters, aim for a settled life. At least for the whole duration of the period they spend being displaced, emigrants or expats. With this in mind, a home may be temporary but it has to be in a permanent context. And since cities are the engine of economic growth, this permanent context is an urban one. How can prefabricated homes be part of an urban context? We can think of two ways: by retro-fitting in an existing fabric and by urbanizing afresh. Retrofitting would seek to fill the urban gaps, derelict spaces and even building roofs with the new prefabricated structures. These structures would plug into the existing fabric at designated locations that have been identified to cope with the increased population: larger roads, vicinity of railway stations, etc. Urbanizing afresh would mean gathering a number of prefabricated homes and arrange them according to a master plan. In order to avoid past urban mistakes — such as urban sprawl, congested streets and polluted air — the community would need to be compact. Compact communities are walkable and reduce the need of a car. When we think of prefabricated homes we have in mind a single detached home. But prefabricated homes can also be high rise. A compact city would be made out of high rise buildings, say four or five stories high. Prefabricated high rise compact living delivered at a low price and in very short time … a real challenge for architects!

BUT WHAT IS OFTEN NOT RECOGNISED IS THE POSSIBILITY OF GROWING AND HARVESTING ECOLOGICALLY-GROWN EDIBLE FLOWERS, FRUIT, HERBS AND VEGETABLES THAT NOT ONLY LOOK AND TASTE GOOD ON A PLATE AND IN INFUSIONS BUT ALSO HAVE DAY TO DAY HEALTH BENEFITS WHETHER GROWN IN A GARDEN OR ON APARTMENT BALCONIES AND TERRACES. WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE POSSIBILITIES.
PLANT MORE HERBS
PLANTS ALSO HELP IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT
Herbs are of great benefit in Spanish villas and apartment gardens for a number of reasons. The taste of their leaves and flowers in salads and cooked dishes, the beneficial health properties of natural aromatherapy as you wander around the garden and the making of infusions, which for us are daily alternatives to tea and coffee. The following is a starter collection.
If you don’t walk or live in an area of natural beauty, the development of a densely planted garden, the planting up of an apartment terrace, the keeping of a bonsai collection, or the placing of moderately sized plants in the office are beneficial things to do. In literature, claims are made that citrus trees, garlic and geraniums have disinfecting properties, pine and oak trees in pots absorb pollutants, rosemary and thyme have insecticidal and stimulant properties and cacti and spider plants absorb electromagnetic radiations. You can place the latter plants in front of computers and on top of televisions. You can’t hang a plant on your mobile but you could sit in a plant surrounded area to use it! If you are bothered by mosquitoes, lantana plants under windows help and the leaves rubbed on bare skin or placed in olive oil for a few weeks are a useful deterrent, as we first discovered when walking through the humid insect rich tropical paradise within the extinct volcanic craters of Reunion Island.
Nine healthy herbs to grow for beneficial infusions. 1. Mint – a digestive and relief to hangovers. 2. Rosemary – an energy and memory boost. 3. Stevia – a natural sweetener of other infusions. Search www.Dolcarevolucio.Cat and you will find local distributors of plants. 4. Sage – an antiseptic for teeth and gums. 5. Basil – with fresh lemon slices, grated ginger and black pepper at the first sign of a cold. 6. Rue – speeds recovery from sprains and strains. 7. Lemon verbena – a refreshing hot or cold summer drink and calms the nerves. Just the thing with all those summer visitors. 8. Parsley – useful for cystitis. 9. Thyme – a useful antiseptic and decongestant. Extract from Part 7 of Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style
GROW SOME VEGETABLES If you re tempted by making more use of herbs what about your own home grown ecological vegetables. An amazing range can be grown in containers, small raised beds and of course traditional vegetable pots of all sizes. They include the following healthy collection. Nine healthy vegetables to grow. 1. Tomatoes – vitamin C, anti-oxidant beta carotene. 2. Swiss chard – vitamins A, C, K and fibre. 3. Red lettuces – vitamins C and K, folic acid, anti-oxidants lutein and beta carotene. 4. Peas – vitamins A, C, B1 and potassium folic acid and fibre. 5. Carrots – vitamin B and beta carotene. 6. Broccoli – vitamins A, C, K and folic acid. 7. Shitake mushrooms – vitamins B, C, K plus manganese potassium and some protein. 8. Beetroots – manganese and anti oxidant betacyanin. 9. Garlic – vitamins C, B5, B6 plus zinc selenium iron copper and anti-oxidants. Extract from Part 9 of Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style
Nine important summer tasks apart from living healthily. 1. Increase watering frequencies and volumes to keep soils and composts continually damp. 2. Give shade to plants on apartment terraces and balconies by pulling down blinds and awnings during the hottest hours of the day. 3. Trim straggly and spiky growth to maintain shapes and safety. 4. Recognise that many plants go dormant during the hottest weeks. They will not respond to extra watering and feeding. Be patient. Many will be back in flower in the Autumn. 5. Prune unsightly and dangerous growth on shrubs and trees. 6. Remove excessive plant growth in ponds so that you can see your fish. 7. Deadhead to stimulate repeat flowerings but leave some seed heads to develop and ripen on your favourites to plant up next Spring. 8. Give fruit trees a summer spray with neem or an other ecological insecticide. 9. Watch out for fungal problems and treat ecologically as soon as they appear. Each of our books include longer lists of seasonal tasks. The above ideas and tasks should not take up too much valuable summer time for the days are long and most tasks are best done early in the day before the sun is hot. Important exceptions are watering and spraying which are best in the evening. Have a great summer in great gardens and apartment terraces. If you want to know more about our ideas for healthy gardens see the blog Health from your garden on www.wddty.com. If your gardening or social club would like a talk on the subject Dick will be at the Over Fifties Show in Estepona in November and could fix dates around this time. © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe www.gardeninginspain.com June 2011.
CLODAGH AND DICK’S BOOKS Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s books are popular with experienced and non gardeners new to Spanish conditions and those who still have problems to solve after a number of years. They can be obtained from main bookshops and by email from websites such as Amazon, Santana Books, Bookworld and the Royal Horticultural Society Bookshop.

through social networks and via the huge range of sharing and subscription options. Add in to the mix that social networks are the biggest recruiting tool used by these sorts of sites and you can see just how important social is to group buying. The timing works perfectly as well being a recession where people are tightening their belts and looking to save a few pennies here and there. As long as the deals keep coming from businesses then group buying online is here to stay and will thrive.
HOW IT WORKS It’s not complicated really , group buying bring lots of people together to achieve massive discounts by bulk buying. Deals are local - based on your local city while common industries covered include restaurants, hairdressers, beauty parlors and adventure activities. The growth and success of these group buying sites has certainly been fueled by the rise in social media and the ability for people to share great deals across their personal networks online. Group buying is one of those things that makes complete sense for people on every side of the deal and is one of those ideas that is so incredibly simple you just wished you had thought about it yourself first!
EVERYONE IS A WINNER For something to work on this scale online there usually has to be something in it for all parties and with group buying that is certainly the case. The most obvious is consumer, why would you not want to get extremely cheap deals? Many people are dubious about online advertising and usually spend their time emptying their inbox of unwanted spam and guard their email address closely but with group buying sites people are straight in there with the email address because they really want to make sure they never miss another special offer. The second winner of course is the businesses that offers the deals since they enjoy huge exposure across everything from email to Facebook and mobile apps for the day of the deal so it is treated as advertising and in return they also get lots of new customers.
SOCIAL ELEMENTS FUELING GROWTH This group buying trend is essentially a commercial E commerce activity but it’s growth can largely be attributed to the rise in social media and the platforms that make sharing content so easy. Who doesn’t want to share a deal that is too good to be true with friends? The really good deals spread like wildfire

Throughout the world more and more of these sites are being launched in every country – from China to the Seychelles and in all the major towns of these countries. It is an alternative form of marketing with the aim of driving new business through the doors of businesses. And as far as the consumer is concerned it is a source of massively discounted offers – from restaurants to health and beauty treatments as well as days out. In Spain there are a number of different brands – all with a similar model and in similar large towns and cities. These websites are primarily aimed at the Spanish speaking market and not the expat market. However the English speaking community will now serviced by a new group buying site - Cooldeals. Initially this site will be promoting special offers and discounts in the Costa del Sol area – but with expansion plans to roll out to other parts of Spain. Thousands of people are already using group buying but the vast majority do not yet and the beauty is that once most people understand the concept explained to them they really want more information on deals available.

true with friends? The really good deals spread like wildfire through social networks and via the huge range of sharing and subscription options. Add in to the mix that social networks are the biggest recruiting tool used by these sorts of sites and you can see just how important social is to group buying. I can’t see this trend stopping and with sites like Opentable getting in on this as well I think we will see the concept spread to other industries. The timing works perfectly as well being a recession where people are tightening their belts and looking to save a few pennies here and there. As long as the deals keep coming from businesses then group buying online is here to stay and will thrive. Cooldeals will also have the massive benefit of promoting the special offers on Spectrum FM – with the offer of the day advertised every hour on the station. Cooldeals is launching in June with sites for Marbella and a site for the Fuengirola area and Duquesa to be launched soon after these launches.

Company formation of a S.L. (sociedad limitada)for By Raquel Perez, Director of the Perez Legal Group business purposes IN ORDER TO START A BUSINESS IN SPAIN, A SPANISH COMPANY NEEDS TO BE FORMED. DIFFERENT DOCUMENTS NEED TO BE GATHERED AND THE FOLLOWING PROCESS NEEDS TO BE ADHERED TO.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 68
You propose three different names for the application of the Certificate of the Company name to the central office in Madrid. If one of the proposed names is available (i.e. doesn’t already exist in the Companies House) the Company name will be attributed to you for three months. If the company is not formed within this three month period a new application needs to be filed. A new bank account needs to be opened in Spain in the proposed name of the company, along with a deposit of 3.006 euros. Once 1 and 2 have been completed, the Deed of Incorporation of the company needs to be properly worded in readiness for signature in the presence of a Spanish Notary Public. The S.L company is formed by an administrator and shareholders. The administrator is the person, as this name indicates, who administers the company and has responsibility of signing all the documents on behalf of the company. The administrator is also the person who is entitled to administer the bank accounts. The shareholders and administrator have limited responsibility of the company liabilities. After the Deed of Incorporation is signed in the presence of the Notary, it must be taken to Companies House so that the company can be registered. Then once this process has been completed, the Deed is registered at the Company House to inscribe the company. Taxes also need to be paid and copies presented to the Tax Agency in order to apply for the CIF number (company registration number). The administrator of the company will be registered in the Spanish social security system as selfemployed and every month the fee of 260 euros approximately has to be paid, depending on the activity of the company.
SUMMER
TAX OFFICE Every quarter there are several forms and tax documents that need to be filed and presented to the Tax Agency. As the process is complicated, you will need to appoint an accountant and a Spanish fiscal representative (normally any law firm will provide these services) who will file all the documents together with the Annual Tax Return, books and accounts which are presented once a year to Companies House. NIE APPLICATION If you are non resident in Spain, you would need to apply for a foreigner identification number, commonly known as an NIE from the closest police station. This certificate will be requested by the Notary Public for the formation of the company and signing of the deeds. S.L. STRUCTURE To set up an S.L. structure, the administrator of the company signs the documents every quarter and also goes every year to a Spanish Notary Public to legalise the accounts and books of the company. An administrator can be also the shareholder of the company and should be registered as selfemployed in the social security system against a monthly payment of 260 euros aprox. ACTIVITY If you are renting a “locale” for your business activity further steps needs to be taken such as: • Application of an opening license from the Town Hall where the premises are based. • A written explanation of your business activity needs to be prepared. • Registration of yourself in the social security system as self-employed. • Passport and 4 photos. • NIE certificate. Inheritance Tax By Carlo Walker Financial Planner Highfield Financial Management The only thing certain in life is death and taxes! Inheritance Tax (IHT) therefore affects us all and can cause yet more grief to an already bereaved family. Recent economic activity and the global downturn have forced many governments to make necessary cutbacks and raise taxes. The new coalition government in the U.K is no different and has introduced some dramatic changes in the new Finance Bill 2011. The Bill has brought radical changes to the pension sector most notably the rise on death duty from 35% to 55% which comes into effect from April 2011. The Bill will affect anyone who wishes to look after their families and loved ones after their passing. Many ex-pats in Spain and elsewhere have historically drawn down on their pension abroad incurring various bank charges that can signifcantly decrease the amount they receive each month. Further weakening the spending power of drawing your pension abroad is the continued attrition in value of the pound against the Euro. Thanks to the 2004 EU Directive and subsequent legislation passed in the UK in 2006, the HMRC now allow the transfer of your pension to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) where you need not suffer currency fluctuations and your beneficiaries will receive the full amount on your passing This means that an ex-pat living in Spain may have their pension paid to them gross and they even have the choice of their preferred currency, either sterling or euro. One of the new additions to the menu and a real treat for any lobster fan. Lobster on a lasagne sheet with succulent lobster stuffed with chopped mushroom, beetroot and barley.

BUDDHA BEACH SERVING AUTHENTIC AND DELICIOUS FOOD, THIS BOUTIQUE
BEACH CLUB IS A FAVOURITE DESTINATION FOR CUISINE LOVERS, ESPECIALLY THAI. By Giles Brown Buddha Beach has quickly gained a reputation as a relaxed setting for both residents and visitors alike, keen to experience Marbella’s first boutique beach club. Located in the quiet residential development of Villa Marina, 10 minutes walk from Puerto Banus, Buddha Beach is the creation of Claire Strutton and her partner Ian Radford. Claire is a huge fan of Thailand and has spent months at a time there, and when Ian visited he too was hooked on the relaxed and peaceful style of life. When the opportunity to buy the old Moosh Moosh Beach presented it, Claire decided to recreate a little of the peace and serenity of Thailand in Marbella. The setting itself is stunning, with a pool area with raised sundecks, two tropical bars perfect for sundowners, a separate beach with waiter service, fish spa, boutique and VIP area with its own 12-seater rockpool Jacuzzi. As the name suggests Buddhas and other Far Eastern items are very much in evidence in the décor. The focal point for my visit, however, was the restaurant. For starters I plumped for the gazpacho, perfect for a hot day on the beach, while my companion went for the salt and pepper squid with chilli and garlic mayonnaise, which she thought was wonderful. My main course was the Thai Green curry with prawns, which was beautifully presented in wooden bowls, and I noticed a popular dish with other dinners. My guest had a Caesar salad, and pronounced it the best she’s tasted since New York. We washed this down with a jug of sangria though there is an extensive wine list. Another table was really pushing the boat out and had plumped for the Marbella Platter, which consists of – and take a deep breath here – a whole lobster and whole crab, four king prawns, baby prawns, four oysters and dipping sauces while on another table a couple were tucking into the Chateau Briand served with Béarnaise, onion rings, mushrooms and tomatoes. Both were spectacularly presented. If course, if you’re thinking of hitting the pool after your meal and don’t want to sink like a stone, the sushi platter or moules Opening Hours: Open every day from 11pm for Lunch Urb. frites may be a better option, and there’s a “Snack and Wrap Menu” that you can enjoy on your sunbed without interrupting the serious business of sunbathing. Buddha Beach has a selection of regular events, such as the amazing Sunday All Dat Buffet, for a very reasonable 35 Euros, and the venue is popular for private parties and special events. Well-behaved children are also welcome, and the main cocktail bar features two discreet TVs so that you can enjoy sporting events. “We’ve created the type of place that we wanted to come to,” explained Claire as we left. I disagreed. Buddha Beach is the type of place everyone wants to come to.

As the name suggests, this is a very friendly establishment run by Igor in the heart of Benahavis Village. Inside, Amigo’s décor is warm and inviting … a rustic Mediterranean style with exposed timber and brick walls which mixes well with the rich reds and earthy colour palette of the cosy dining area. The open kitchen offers an appetising choice of starters before indulging in a meat lovers paradise from the open flame wood grill … as is the choice to dine either in the ample dining room or the comfortable and inviting terrace to soak up the village atmosphere. Entrées include simple offerings such as home made chicken croquettes, or a little more involved such as a terrine of duck confit with foie gras and cognac marinated prunes. Their speciality of the house (done the Amigos way!), warm goats cheese wrapped in phyllo pastry drizzled with a Malaga wine reduction over a green salad is a delight. From the open flame wood grill choose between an amazingly tender T-Bone steak or the owner’s favourite, “El Chuleton” Ribsteak — a truly melt in the mouth experience. Spoilt for choice,
then why not try the mixed grill with chicken, babyback rib, lamb cutlet and iberian grilled pork. Finish with a scoop of ice cream or one of their mouth watering desserts which includes a warm dark chocolate brownie with walnuts or their addictive banoffee pie. And for those patrons who like to linger after dinner the in-house bar stays open until late most nights for a civilised drink or a glass of wine from their solid wine selection. HOME ENTERTAINING > Jerk pork & shallot skewers with pineapple salsa Serves 4 Ingredients 650g pork steaks, cut into 2.5 cm cubes 12 shallots, peeled and cut in half 3 tbsp Bart Spices jerk rub 3 tbsp olive oil 8 wooden kebab skewers, soaked in water for an hour to prevent burning Salsa: 1/2 fresh pineapple, chopped into 1 cm cubes 3 shallots, finely chopped A handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped Juice & zest of 1 lime 3 red chillis, deseeded and chopped
COOK’S TIPS: Soak the wooden kebab sticks in hot water to prevent them from burning on the BBQ.
Method 1. Make a paste with the jerk rub by mixing it with the olive oil. Add the jerk paste to the cubed pork and shallots and mix thoroughly. Leave to marinate for a minimum of half an hour – an hour would be better if you had time. 2. Whilst the pork and shallots are marinating make the pineapple salsa by combining all the ingredients in a bowl. Leave to rest at room temperature to allow the flavours to develop. 3. When the marinating is finished, thread the shallots and pork alternately onto the skewers. Cook the skewers on a BBQ on a high heat for a couple of minutes on each side until they are nicely coloured. Move to a cooler part of the BBQ and cook for further 10-15 minutes, turning regularly until the pork is cooked and the shallots are tender. 4. Serve with the pineapple salsa.

Method 1. Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade stirring well. 2. Thread a bay leaf onto the first skewer and then alternate the shallots and the lamb onto the wooden skewer and repeat with all skewers. Lay the kebabs in a shallow dish and then pour over the marinade and leave to marinate for at least 2 hours, if possible overnight, in a fridge. 3. Heat the barbecue, and oil the grills, cook the kebabs on medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side brushing the kebabs with remaining marinade throughout the cooking process. Take care not to have the heat too high or you will burn the marinade. 4. Meanwhile for the dipping sauce mix all the ingredients together. 5. Serve with a green salad, basmati rice and little pots of the dipping sauce.

Facelifts Can Look Natural and be Longlasting
Dr Kaye from Ocean Clinic Explains... FOLLOWING MANY YEARS IN PLASTIC SURGERY MAINLY IN GERMANY AND THE USA, THE CHARISMATIC DR KAI KAYE SET UP HIS BOUTIQUESTYLE CLINIC NEARLY THREE YEARS AGO IN THE HEART OF MARBELLA WHERE HE OPERATES ON EVERY PATIENT HIMSELF. THIS PERSONABLE, VIBRANT SURGEON WHO IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HIS WORK TALKS TO HOME & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE ABOUT HIS TECHNIQUES IN ENHANCING THE LOOKS OF HIS CLIENTS IN A WAY THAT LOOKS NATURAL AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, LASTS WITHOUT THEM LOOKING LIKE THEY HAVE UNDERGONE ANY SURGERY AT ALL.
80
SUMMER
Dr Kaye states, “Over the years, cosmetic surgery has become less painful, less invasive and techniques have been minimalised. A facelift 15 years ago was a big procedure with patients spending nights in hospital to recover, now this is not the case. A facelift these days can be done as an ambulatory procedure within three hours under sedation with no risky anaesthesia requiring a ventilator. Recovery time can be as quick as two hours after the surgery after which, patients can go home. Following five or six days resting at home, most patients can venture out in public with no noticeable signs of surgery. Now fibrolight optics are used to carry out facelifts making only tiny scars, unlike years ago when patients had to bear large scars around their ears following this kind of surgery. Years ago, to perform a facelift was a procedure where the skin was simply tightened causing the dreaded wind tunnel look. This is because older skin which is already papery would be simply pulled up but would give way after a year or two. With the Macslift technique that I employ, this look is now totally avoidable as the technique simply repositions the facial volume stabilising the underlying tissue giving a very natural look with minimal downtime. The facial muscle is a compound of fibres and due to ageing, these fibres move down the face giving a squarer look. To achieve the more youthful triangular facial look with high cheek bones and a sculpted jaw line, soft tissue can now be shifted from the lower part of the face where there might be jowls, up to the cheek bone holding the face up naturally. The median age for facelifts has lowered dramatically over the years from patients starting in the late fifties or early sixties to their late forties. Operating on someone in their forties whose skin is in good shape will experience a longer lasting result as the skin will more easily readapt to the changes in the underlying tissues. If the skin is papery, the skin will not mould as easily around the facial muscle. Performing a facelift is not about tightening the skin, it is about stabilising the underlying tissue, fixing the muscles in a vertical upright position.” Dr Kaye has published modifications of the Macslift technique on an international level as face-lifting is one of his specialisations together with breast surgery, though he stresses that he would never do very large breast implants for obvious health reasons. Dr Kaye also has many male clients with around twenty-five to thirty per cent of his clientele being men who tend to go for more sculptured surgery like rhinoplasty and liposuction. “To get the best out of plastic surgery, I always recommend physiotherapy and/or lymphatic drainage immediately after. At Ocean Clinic, we offer long term aftercare which I believe is very important. We have even invested in a new innovative aftercare device called Hilotherapy® which optimises recovery and limits bruising and swelling by up to 30%.” For a consultation with Dr Kaye, call 951 775 518 or 670 770 455 Address: Av. SUMMER
In the years leading up to menopause, menstrual cycles start to become erratic. When you have had 12 consecutive months without any type of period you are officially in the Menopause. Erratic cycles mean ovulation is sporadic and your body is suffering the effects of fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone. Your ovaries control hormone production and when they are not working properly, you may feel emotionally as though you are on a roller coaster, forgetful, not thinking straight, confused, mood swings as well as hot flashes, night sweats, tearfulness, unwanted weight gain, thyroid problems and declining interest in sex, no matter how much you love your partner. As every woman is different, with her own bio-chemistry, the symptoms and intensity will vary. HORMONE IMBALANCE It’s not just the menopause which causes an imbalance in your hormones and adversely affects your health, high stress levels can also cause it. When you experience high levels of stress on a regular basis you are putting a significant strain on your adrenal function. The adrenal glands normally secrete cortisol in response to stress, exercise, excitement and low blood sugar. Your body secretes a high amount of cortisol in the morning to get you going and slowly decreases throughout the day. If stress remains too high for too long, your adrenals cannot cope and your cortisol output falls dramatically. Symptoms of adrenal imbalance are stress and fatigue that does not improve with sleep, disturbed sleep, anxiety, depression, sweet cravings, allergies, sensitivity to chemicals and cold, along with an increased tendency to catch infections. If you think you’re suffering from these symptoms a few changes to your diet can really help to boost adrenal function. Avoid hydrogenated fats, caffeine, refined carbohydrates, alcohol and sugar. Only eat quality protein and eat regularly. Try to get plenty of rest and sleep. NATURAL BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES Another way to treat adrenal issues and a whole range of hormone imbalances, including the menopause, is by using bio-identical hormones. These are synthesised from natural plant substances including soybeans and yams to be identical in structure and function to those your body produces naturally. Simple tests such as blood spot and or saliva tests are available to check your levels of hormones and treatment can be tailored to suit your needs. When hormone balance is restored and maintained you will feel like a new woman. Dr. Jean Garant Mendoza of the Long Life Clinic is one of the very few doctors in Spain to offer bio-identical hormone treatments. The clinic is holding regular free seminars on the Menopause and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement in Marbella and Estepona. Please visit the website www.longlifeclinic.com to find out when the next seminar is being held and book your place.

The future of Healthcare: SimpleCare A NEW CONCEPT IN PRIVATE HEALTHCARE THAT GIVES YOU MORE CONTROL OVER YOUR HEALTH, YOUR CHOICES AND YOUR EUROS.
Consumers deserve to know the quality and cost of their healthcare and when purchasing private medical care, it’s essential to choose a plan that not only meets your needs but is also available at the best price. SimpleCare provides just that, a low-cost, high quality scheme that allows consumers to gain access to the healthcare they need without the exclusions, limitations, and paperwork typically associated with health insurance. If you are suffering from a medical condition and can not get insurance, SimpleCare will not exclude you. In fact, your medical history is of no concern to them. You can enroll in the plan and get affordable care immediately. And even better, the monthly premium is nominal.
HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT WITH A SIMPLECARE HEALTH PLAN? SimpleCare has created an affordable private health care plan to help bridge the gap for consumers burdened by the increasing cost of healthcare by providing opportunities to directly obtain healthcare services at reduced rates. a ACCESS: SimpleCare gives members immediate access to a network of world-class medical professionals, state-of-the-art hospitals and clinics for both out-patient and in-patient procedures. a Affordability: While insurance rates have increased at double-digit rates over the past 12 years, SimpleCare rates stay the same every year, no monthly premium increases as you get older. a Savings: Those with limited insurance, the underinsured, and insured individuals with high deductibles can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and receive reduced fees for services not normally covered by insurance. a No exclusions: SimpleCare offers no exclusions for pre-existing conditions, no age limits and no exclusions for chronic health conditions. a Convenience: SimpleCare have a network of hospitals and clinics with over 2,000 specialist. You can choose to receive treatment from any hospital, clinic, or legally qualified medical practitioner in the SimpleCare Network. Plus, no long waiting lists. SO HOW DOES SIMPLECARE’S HEALTH PLAN OFFER SUCH BENEFITS? SimpleCare is a large US-based company, which enables its members to gain access to reduced rates that are usually only available to major insurance companies. The difference is that instead of financing the medical expenses of members by charging high monthly premiums, which is the case in health insurance companies, SimpleCare patients pay for medical
care at the time of service. This cuts out the morass of administrative paperwork, allowing providers to slash their fees, giving the patient a cost saving of 4070% directly at the time of service. WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES ARE TYPICALLY INCLUDED IN SIMPLECARE’S HEALTH PLAN? SimpleCare offers a comprehensive package that includes doctors, specialists, ancillary care (labs, scans, hearing, etc.), dental, vision care and cosmetic surgery. They also offer in addition to their Health Plan: health assessments, lifescans to reduce the risk of undetected disease, diabetic care and predictive medicine via genetic testing. HOW DO YOU BECOME A MEMBER OF SIMPLECARE? Signing up for a card is easy. You can simply apply online at www.simplecarehealthplan.com, pay a nominal yearly premium, and you will receive your membership card within a couple of weeks. WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE? Even if you already have private medical insurance, SimpleCare’s Health Plan could save you up to 70% on services not covered due to pre-existing or chronic conditions not covered by your plan. In fact, your SimpleCare Health Plan can fill the gaps that your current cover, NHS or SAS will not cover. For example, where there may be exclusion of treatment due to a previous chronic medical condition, age related, dental work, opticians or cosmetic surgery. Our membership will give you access to prestigious private medical services at affordable rates. SimpleCare can help patients who have no medical insurance, have insurance with a high deductible and pay most costs out-of-pocket, or have insurance that doesn’t cover certain procedures.

The best way to do it is to select the nutritious Cleopatra bath, where guests will emulate Egypt’s legendary queen, bathing in pure milk to achieve a velvety and hydrated skin. The Sensation Divine aux Champagne treatment also becomes the perfect body ritual, exfoliating skin with grape pip and champagne oil-based massage. Nothing better than to finish a day at the spa with a swim in the outdoor Jacuzzi, a great opportunity to relax in front of the Pyrenees stunning scenery with lush and luminous green from its splendid valleys.

There’s a choice of powerful, refined engines available. The state-of-the-art turbocharged 240PS 2.0-litre petrol Si4 4-cylinder engine combines the economy of a 4-cylinder with the performance and refinement normally expected from a six cylinder. DEBRA consistently develops projects to improve the quality of life of people affected and defends the patients right to receive fair treatment and benefits from social services. DEBRA Spain belongs to DEBRA International and is a founding member; it also belongs to the Spanish federation for Rare disease (FEDER) as well as to the European platform for Rare Diseases (Eurordis) who are represented at the European Parliament.
Unique Initiative by Gómez & Molina to raise funds for the Foundation Cesare Scariolo (FCS).
ABOUT EPIDERMOLYSIS BULLOSA Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), also known as the Butterfly Skin condition, is a group of genetic rare diseases of the skin which are characterised by extreme fragility of the skin. Blisters occur spontaneously both externally and internally and can occur at the lightest touch. The inherited genes for EB are autosomal recessive or dominant. The dominant forms are normally less serious and the recessive forms are more severe. One of the severest forms is recessive dystrophic, which is characterised by an almost total absence of collagen VII, this is caused by mutations in the gene COL7A1. Without this gene and in the severest cases the patients entire body is affected leaving open wounds all over the body. The healing process is so slow that this in turn leads to severe deformity of the hands and feet as fingers and toes fuse together in the process. Patients loose the use of hands and feet and with this their quality of life is seriously affected. There are a number of different treatments including skin transplants and bone marrow transplants. In Spain the rate of EB is 1 in 50,000 babies born. This means that 10 children with EB are born every year. There are currently an estimated number of 1,000 cases of people living with EB in Spain. Jewellery firm Gómez & Molina have developed a unique initiative to raise funds for the Foundation Cesare Scariolo (FCS). The project, dubbed Opturator is supported by Spanish photographer Eduardo Soria, who specialises in fashion and advertising photography. Soria is offering his creative photographic skills by taking original portraits which are characterised by an elaborate lighting treatment in order to give the character a unique look. Recognised names such as Manolo Santana, Pablo Forlan, Jose Coronado and Pablo Motos have been seduced by the artistic look of Soria. All photographs taken in this campaign will be part of an exhibition whose opening is scheduled for late Summer. In addition, a limited edition book of the photographers work will be sold exclusively in Gómez & Molina. Opturator is the first of many campaigns that the jewellery firm has undertaken to raise funds for Fundación Cesare Scariolo. In August 2011 Gómez & Molina will be supporting a golf tournament and before the end of the year they plan to launch a bracelet, all proceeds from the sales will go to the Fundación Cesare Scariolo. The Fundación Cesare Scariolo is a private nonprofit organisation created in 2008 by Sergio Scariolo, current Spanish basketball coach and former coach of Unicaja. The Foundation provides direct assistance to children who are under treatment for cancer, and their families.
