WINTER PREP CHECKLIST

Cold spells are upon us, and here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about preparing your home for the colder winter months.

Insulation—Adequate insulation retains heat inside your home, reducing energy consumption and keeping you warm. A well-insulated home can significantly lower your heating bills and improve your overall comfort. Depending on where you live and the part of your home you're insulating (walls, crawlspace, attic, etc.), you'll need a different R-Value. Typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30, R-38 and R-49 are common for ceilings and attic spaces. Additional insulation can be installed in attics that don’t have adequate R-Value

Seal Any Air Leaks—Air leaks contribute to higher heating bills. Look for air leaks around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and light fixtures. You can use a smoke test or a thermal imaging camera to identify air leaks. An easy DIY test is to move a candle along the edges of doors or

windows to see if the flame reacts to a draft. Seal any gaps or cracks with caulk or weatherstripping.

Install Storm Windows and Storm Doors— Storm windows or doors can provide an extra layer of insulation and protection against the elements. They can also help to reduce noise pollution and improve your home's appearance.

Heating System Maintenance—Regularly replace your HVAC filters to improve air quality and prevent the system from working harder than necessary. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of your heating system. Also, have your heating system inspected by a qualified technician. They can check for any problems and clean it up to ensure operating efficiently.

If you have radiators, bleed them to remove any trapped air and ensure they heat evenly. Located at the top of the radiator, the bleed valve allows any trapped air to escape. Close the valve once the air is released and the radiator is filled with hot water.

Protect Your Pipes—Insulate all exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. Pipe insulation can easily be cut to fit and taped in place. You can also disconnect any hoses and irrigation systems to avoid water damage. Cover outdoor faucets with insulated protectors, which is especially important in areas with harsh winters.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts—Remove any leaves or other debris from your gutters and downspouts to prevent water backup and ice dams. Ice dams can form when snow melts and refreezes in your gutters, causing water to back up and potentially damage your roof or walls.

Protect Your Plants—Some plants can tolerate colder temperatures, and others cannot, so it's important to research the specific needs of your plants. Protect any sensitive plants from the cold weather by bringing them indoors or covering them with frost blankets.

Replace Detector Batteries—You should have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. Check the batteries and replace if necessary.

Gather an Emergency Kit—Make sure you have plenty of emergency supplies on hand, such as batteries, flashlights, non-perishable food, and bottled water. Assemble an emergency kit with essential supplies, including blankets and a first-aid kit.

QUICK TIPS FOR WINTER GARDEN CARE

1. Remove Weeds

Removing weeds eliminates hiding spots for pests. Diseased plants should also be removed to prevent disease and fungi from appearing on new plants.

In addition, removing all fruits and vegetables from the ground will discourage pests from entering your garden.

2. Amend the Garden Soil

Gently till the garden bed to expose any insects that may still be hiding in the soil. Early winter is an excellent time to add soil amendments. Compost and manure are a few options for improving the soil’s quality.

3. Prevent Insect Damage with Horticultural Oil

Horticultural oil is a type of pesticide that controls pests on trees, vegetable gardens and other plants. Applying horticultural oil before winter hits will prevent insects and other pests from damaging your garden. Always follow the label’s directions when applying, as certain brands require multiple applications.

4. Plant a Cover Crop

Planting a cover crop can greatly reduce erosion and weed growth, as well as increase organic matter

in your garden. Generally, cover crops are planted one month before the first killing frost. Cover crops mainly consist of mustard, clover, peas, rye or a combination of these crops. In the spring, simply turn over the cover crop to enrich your garden’s soil.

5. Plant and Care for Trees and Shrubs

Late fall and early winter are the perfect times for planting new trees and shrubs. Spreading a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch at the base of the trunk is a good way to protect trees from cold temperatures. Prune deciduous trees while the branches are clearly visible.

7. Care for Perennial Flowers

For perennial flower beds, autumn and winter are excellent times to cut any dead or withered flowers. This will improve their appearance in the spring, as well as prevent insects from hiding in the dried flowers.

8. Check Your Garden Weekly

Although your garden may be dormant, it can still benefit from weekly checkups to evaluate any damage and perhaps treat it with insecticide.

CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICESHIPS WILL FAIL TO MEET PROJECTED NEEDS

Exacerbating an ongoing housing crisis, current construction apprenticeship programs are unlikely to meet the needs of the building industry for more workers, despite a doubling of enrollment in such programs over the past decade, according to new analysis from RAND. The construction industry in the United States has experienced a notable surge in activity, driven by infrastructure development and delayed housing construction. This growth in construction activity has further stressed an already insufficient construction workforce

Apprenticeships are increasingly viewed as a critical strategy for mitigating construction labor shortages and fostering long-term industry growth. Alarmingly, one-third of construction apprenticeship programs (2,257 programs) had just one active apprentice in 2023, indicating limited capacity. Increasing capacity to host more apprentices is important, but it is likely to be insufficient as 40 percent of construction apprentices do not complete their programs.

If the United States focuses on apprenticeships as the main strategy to meet labor demand without addressing capacity and noncompletion, the nation will fail to meet the growing construction workforce demand, according to researchers.

QUESTION: My water bill went up. How do I check for leaks?

ANSWER: High water bills are commonly caused by running toilets, which can waste up to 200 gallons per day. Leaky faucets can drip up to 20 gallons per day. Check all faucets for leaks, as well as inspect your toilet’s tank and listen for any sounds, such as hissing. In some cases, a valve might need to be replaced or the toilet’s flapper might be worn out. If you don’t find leaks, you’ll need to check your water line and outdoor hose bibs. If you shut off all the water fixtures in the home but your home’s water meter still indicates that water is flowing, then you might have a leak in your home’s main supply line.

QUESTION: When shopping for a tape measure, what is the difference in the terms “length,” “reach,” and “standout”?

ANSWER: These terms originated from package marketing copy and can be misleading or confusing. The “length” indicated is indeed the length of the tape when fully extended from the box, i.e., a 25-ft. tape measure will extend a full 25 feet.

“Standout” refers to the maximum extension of the tape blade from the box before it buckles and falls under its own weight.

“Reach” is basically the “standout” measurement plus 3 feet, as determined by a worker using a guide hand to support the tape as it extends from the box, estimated to be 3 feet from the tape box.

PRETTIER POSTS WITH PVC WRAPS

A new PVC column-wrap system comes in a range of realistic woodgrain finishes that make attractive decorative columns out of standard lumber posts. PVC column wraps make installation easy and save maintenance in the long term.

“By combining the maintenance-free performance of premium cellular PVC with the warm personalities of natural woods, new Canvas Series Versawrap offers builders, architects and homeowners a wider-than-ever range of creative possibilities,” says Versatex President Scott Van Winter.

LESS LABOR

“With Versawrap, one worker can snap a beautiful, weatherproof shell around an unfinished wooden post in just a few minutes, instead of cutting and fastening four mitered corners for every column,” says Rick Kapres, vice president sales and marketing. “I’m happy to announce we’re supplying 6x6-in. by 10-ft.

Canvas Series Versawrap in three colors: Kitami, Turner Oak and Natural Amber, with matching accent wraps and base moldings.

“With Canvas Series Versawrap you can install column wraps that give you natural wood charm without the worry of re-staining or refinishing, ever again,” says Kapres. He notes that color-matched touchup kits are available for purchase, plus the wraps are also available in the original solid white.

SKILL SET

PREPARATION

Always reference local guidelines and be sure to use materials that comply with building codes.

Note that if you’re planning to wrap a new pressure-treated wood post, first allow the post to dry (which may take several months).

Versawrap column wraps are individually packaged in a cardboard sleeve, and the canvas surfaces are folded inward to protect the exterior faces of the wrap. Be careful when handling the individual wraps to prevent damage to the canvas face. Keep the wraps in their original packaging until installation.

All Versatex Canvas Series products must be handled like a stained piece of mahogany, walnut, or any other premium wood and not like dimensional lumber. The laminate boards should never be stored on the ground, asphalt, or any rough surface face down or in standing water.

Boards should be removed by lifting at both ends. Friction between the laminate and the backside of the boards may cause minor markings. (See the cleaning tips below.)

Make sure the post you’re planning to wrap is structurally sound and straight. It may be necessary to install thin furring

THE USE OF SPRAY FOAM VS. SHIMS CAN HELP REDUCE POST TWISTING AS IT DRIES.

strips, shims, or spray foam insulation (formulated for windows and doors). Be sure the outside dimensions of furred/shimmed strips are no wider than the inside dimension of the Versawrap column wrap.

For spray foam insulation, spray four 1-in. beads leaving 12 inches at the top and bottom without foam. (The foam will expand and fill in the gaps between the column and the wrap.)

If using shims, attach them evenly to all four sides to maintain equal spacing around the column/post.

Pro tip: For newer posts, the use of spray foam vs. shims can help manage post twisting as it dries.

INSTALLATION

Test-fit the column around the post before installation. If the locking miter joint is too tight, consider wrapping a piece of 320 grit sandpaper around a paint stick, ruler, or shim and run it through the groove to slightly open the joint.

Use a thin-bodied PVC glue that offers enough cure/working time to be applied in the four joints and wrapped around the structural column/post before curing. PVC glues with solvent work well, provided you apply them quickly.

Keep solvent-based PVC glue from contacting the canvas surface because it may

Apply the PVC glue into the four joints using a plastic squeeze bottle with a thin, tapered nozzle applicator, like a ketchup bottle or a 5-ounce tube of adhesive. Avoid using thick two-component or single-component adhesives, which will keep the lockmiter corners from fitting tightly together. Remember to apply the adhesive to only one surface of the miter joints.

For easy installation, glue the two corners opposite male and female panels, forming a “U.” Wrap the “U” around your post, apply spray foam (if necessary) and glue the remaining two corners of the wrap. Keep the column panels held tightly together by using tape, a strap, or square clamps until the glue cures.

Be sure to use only low-tack tape (painters’ tape) and clean off any residue using a recommended cleaner. Note: Four Versawraps can be glued using one 5-ounce tube of adhesive regardless of column length.

Secure the column wrap to the structural column using stainless steel nails that penetrate through the furring strips (if used) to the structural post.

CLEANING TIPS

Versatex recommends wiping the material with the recommended cleaner Cosmofen 20 (CL-300.140 by Weiss) and a soft cloth. Avoid the use of abrasive scrub pads like Scotch Brite pads, pumiced-based cleaners, or any solvent like acetone and toluene, which will break down the laminate and dull the surface.

SUMMARY

Made of cellular PVC with three premitered grooves, the Versawrap column wraps fold around a structural post and lock together with a friction-fit, locking miter joint. Just apply your PVC glue, fold the wrap around your structural column, and secure in place. This method provides an easy, low-maintenance way to enhance the look of ordinary posts.

HOW TO BUILD A CYPRESS GRILL TABLE FOR A BIG GREEN EGG

A kamado-style ceramic smoker is a popular amenity for backyard cooks because of its versatility in smoking, grilling, and even baking pizzas. Available in several brand names, these circular charcoal grills require a foundational stand plus a prep surface, and a wooden grill table can combine these functions into a single, handy workstation designed to suit your needs.

CYPRESS

The table shown is constructed from cypress. One reason we chose cypress for this project is because the trees produce a preservative which protects the wood from decay and repels insects like termites and carpenter bees. This makes cypress especially suited for outdoor projects. Cypress has natural wood grain character, and as it's also easy to cut, sand, and shape with a router.

BUILD A GRILL TABLE

TABLE FRAME

Begin by gathering all materials then cutting the boards to size for your table. You can easily alter the size of the table to suit your needs. The table shown here is 60 inches long. Make sure to build the table large enough to house the

grill, which required at least 30 inches wide in our case (for a 21-in. diameter grill).

First, assemble the 2x4 frame of the tabletop, fastening all joints with a combination of screws and exterior-grade adhesive. The glue will help prevent any movement in the table joints. Make sure to double-check measurements and build the frame corners at 90 degrees.

FASTENERS

For this project, we recommend using two primary sizes of fasteners, a structural screw (which is like a modern lag-screw replacement) and a decking type screw. The screws we chose featured self-starting tips, which means the end of the screw is fluted like a drill bit. These

drill-like tips penetrate the wood without the need of a pilot hole. If you choose different types of screws that do not have self-starting tips, then you should drill pilot holes for the screws to avoid splitting the wood

LEGS

The four legs can be made from solid 4x4. However, due to the limited availability of 4x4 cypress at the time, I screwed a couple of 2x4 boards together to make the 4x4 legs.

To ensure the tightest fit, use the tabletop frame as a guide to determine size and construct the two H-shaped leg assemblies within the interior dimensions of the frame. Use squares and clamps as needed to hold the boards in position as you make the connections to fasten the 2x4 cross-braces between the

legs. The cross-braces can be fastened between the legs using a metal bracket and nails, or the cross-brace can be notched into the 4x4 posts and fastened with screws and glue.

TABLE-TOP

Once the legs are built, complete the tabletop. The addition of a center brace will add strength and help maintain alignment of the rectangular frame. Fasten the 2x4 brace with glue and angled screws from inside the frame to reduce visible fasteners. For longer tables, locate the brace toward the end of the table-top where the grill will be, forming a square frame around the grill area.

Cut the 1x6 top boards of the table long enough to overhang the ends of the frame by an inch. Space the boards evenly so they overhang the sides by an inch. Drive two evenly spaced screws through the 1x6 boards into each frame board beneath it.

The 1x6 table-top boards overhang the frame by 1” on all sides.

Apply stain/sealer while it’s easy to access all sides and edges of the table.

Complete final assembly on site.

ASSEMBLY

At this point, it’s a good idea to apply wood stain/sealer to all the table parts while their sides and edges are still easy to access.

As you prepare for the final assembly of the table, keep in mind that’s once it’s completed, the table will be large, heavy, and difficult to move. I recommend relocating the parts to the space where it's finally going to stay, and then completing assembly on site.

I laid a blanket to protect the table surface, then placed the table-top upside down to attach the legs. Use a combination of 5-in. screws and glue to fasten the leg assemblies snugly inside each end of the table top. A framing square and clamps will help hold the legs in place while making the connections.

SHELF

Once they’ve been attached, the legs can be used as a guide to mark final measurements for the lower shelf rails. Cut the shelf rails to fit the legs. You can attach them between the legs with metal brackets, or you can choose to notch them into the 4x4 legs. A cross-brace attached between the two long shelf rails will add strength and rigidity to the shelf.

After the shelf rails are attached, flip the table upright to add the 1x6 shelf boards. Cut the shelf boards to fit over the support rails.

With the design of this table, you will need a jigsaw to notch two of the four shelf boards at each end to fit around the table legs. You’ll get the most accurate cuts by clamping the boards

in place against the 4x4 legs and marking the notches on the board (allow 1/8 inch of space around the legs). To gauge the cuts at the end of the boards, use a short scrap of 1x6 as a template to mark the notch in place, then transfer the cutline to the shelf board.

Drive screws through the shelf boards into the support rails, spacing them evenly.

A clamp that doubles as a spreader makes a handy tool for positioning the rails when fastening.

The two outside shelf boards should be notched at each end to fit around the legs.

Metal hangers were used to attach the shelf rails, although notching the rails into the legs is also an option.

Use a scrap piece of 1x6 to mark the notch, then transfer the cut-lines to the shelf board.

Screw the boards securely over the rails.

Cut the 1x6 shelf boards to fit flush over the rails.

GRILL NEST

You will need a jigsaw to cut a circular passage through the table-top which will fit your grill. To simplify this procedure, you can use the dome or circular top of the grill as a template to mark the cutout. When positioning the dome, be sure to avoid marking your cut-line over the framing boards beneath the table-top.

Use a half-inch bit to drill a pilot hole for the jigsaw blade on the inside of your marked circular cutout. Guide the jigsaw from the pilot hole along the cut-line to remove material from

Add stain/sealer as needed to the cut areas. Kamadostyle grills generally require a paver stone placed beneath the grill to protect the wood from direct heat.

the 1x6 table boards and complete the grill cutout. Touch up the cut boards with wood sealer.

CUSTOMIZATION

Feel free to put your own spin on the design of the table. You can make it as large as you like or only big enough to fit your grill. You can add different types of shelving or incorporate decorative hardware. Consider notching the front rail into the posts for a pro-carpenter look, or combine various colors of stain for a multi-toned finish. This is a fun project with endless options for the grilling aficionado, and we expect our new cypress grill table to serve us well for many years to come.

EXPLORING WATER VAPOR FIREPLACES

Does water burn?

Water vapor fireplaces present a modern take on the concept of home fireplaces.

This type of electric fireplace insert powered by water uses ultrasonic technology to create a fine mist that mimics the appearance of flames and smoke. These fireplaces do not produce actual flames, but instead, they create a realistic-looking flame effect using LED lights and water vapor. Unlike traditional models, Aquafire fireplaces utilize water vapor to create stunning 3D flames without generating heat. This unique decorative feature ensures safety by eliminating fire hazards with minimal energy consumption and zero emissions.

Whether installed in homes, apartments, or RVs, Aquafire's fireplaces offer a safe, eco-friendly alternative to enhance the look of a living space.

Beyond functionality, Aquafire's designs are crafted to complement various interior styles. Each fireplace is customizable in size and finish, providing homeowners with a versatile solution that seamlessly integrates into their decor.

IS THIS A PLUMBING APPLICATION?

Aquafire's water vapor fireplaces are not a traditional plumbing application. The units can be directly plumbed to your home's water supply similar to how an ice maker in a fridge is handled. Plumbing the unit is designed to be straightforward and userfriendly. The system runs on regular tap water and plugs into a standard electrical outlet. The integration is intended to be simple and convenient, enhancing the fireplace’s functionality without requiring extensive plumbing work.

SPOTLIGHT

Water vapor fireplace inserts are generally easy to install and use, as they do not require any venting or chimneys, and they can be operated using a remote control.

While the Aquafire Water Vapor Fireplace Inserts can be installed via professional installation, the detailed installation guide provides valuable insights for both pro remodelers and DIY homeowners. The unit is designed for user-friendly installation that even an average homeowner can handle. Detailed written and visual instructions (including videos) guide you step by step,

with many customers finding the process simpler than assembling Ikea furniture.

HOW IT WORKS

Once the insert is installed into the desired enclosure, you can add tap water in one of three ways: (1) Connect directly to a tap water source; (2) enable the automatic filling function with the provided tubing; or (3) simply remove the top lid and add tap water manually.

Within the mist chamber sits the ultrasonic transducer, AKA the "mist-maker."

EXPLORING WATER VAPOR FIREPLACES >

In the center of the mist-maker is a thin ceramic disc on top of a spring. When powered on, water flows from the water tank at a controlled rate towards the mist chamber, causing the ceramic disc to vibrate up and down at hypersonic speeds separating useful minerals from other molecules and suspending them in a web-like mist.

The ultrasonic atomization results in mist, or “vapor,” which is gently pushed with fans from the mist chamber to the top of the unit through the diffuser vent. The vapor is then backlit by a bar (or two in the Pro model) of high-powered LED light strips, creating the patented "dancing water" vapor flame effect.

The result is a beautiful, smokeless, eco-friendly water vapor fireplace. Enjoy for up to 20 hours on one fill or unlimited hours when directly connected to a water line.
