Welcome to My Hometowns Texas

Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

W

hen it comes to the holidays, I find that I wait longer and longer to shop every year. It seems the older I get, the less “free” time I have. But, I hope that I am never one of those people who are the very last-minute shoppers (you’ll often find them buying gift cards on Christmas Eve). Then there are those, like my daughter, that before Thanksgiving have lights up, Christmas trees decorated, Christmas shopping already started, and are just lovers of all things holiday. Remember that although this time of year is about good cheer, love, and celebrations, the holidays can also bring about extreme amounts of stress. So, please use this issue of “My Hometowns Texas” as your Christmas shopping and event guide. After all your shopping, you can reward yourself at the fun events found on our calendar pages, or enjoy some delicious meals at our local restaurants. The message here is meant to inspire you to support locally owned and operated businesses all around the area. It is less stressful and takes a shorter

amount of time to shop in your hometown, than to drive to the big cities and contend with the crowds. The Holidays can be quite hectic, but with the time you save shopping locally, you’ll be able to make the time to relax and enjoy the “Reason for the Season”. Following are just a few events for your enjoyment. The holiday season kicks off with the Granbury Opera House’s Gala Extravaganza black tie event starting at 6 pm. The 30th Annual Granbury Candlelight Tours is Dec. 6-8 from 6:15-9:15. If you haven’t decorated yet, these homes are sure to give you some fabulous ideas. On the 7th, the kids can have breakfast with Santa at: the 2nd annual GHS Stowaways pancake breakfast from 9-11:30 am at the Granbury High School Cafeteria; or at Camp El Tesoro from 8-11 am. Then on Dec. 13 & 14, the Living Christmas cards come to life on the Granbury Square between 6 and 9 pm. In Glen Rose, Dec. 14 is full of cheer all day long on the square with singers and dancers, The Stable at the Methodist Church from 12-4, the parade at 6 pm, and the Community Choir and

lighting of the Christmas tree. These are only a few of the holiday events that are sure to put you in the spirit to shop, decorate and enjoy the season. I would like to thank our wonderful staff for putting up with the deadlines, being there when I needed you and taking time to make this publication the best it can be. I am humbled by your dedication. I would also like to thank our great advertisers for the continued support these past ten months. Without you, we would not have the privilege of publishing this magazine and informing the Hood and Somervell county area residents of all the fun, exciting, and entertaining things to do. Please show your thanks to them by “shopping local” this holiday season. Happy Holidays,

Robert Summers – Creating art that is “larger than life”

T

exas native Robert Summers began his lifelong career as a sought after painter and sculptor at the tender age of two, creating figures and animals with bread dough and graduating to oil painting by the age of nine. Although Summers had no formal training, other than a short course in mixing colors at the age of fifteen, he began to explore his God-given talent in his twenties and has since become proficient in many mediums including: egg and acrylic tempera, oil, dry-brush watercolor, pastel and pencil as well as wax and clay. His ability as a sculptor has led to numerous commissions for major projects in cities throughout the United States.

Summers long list of major works include many “larger than life” sculptures, a few of which are: a nine-foot statue of golf legend Byron Nelson, which is prominently located near the first tee at the TPC course at the Four Seasons Resort and Club at Las Colinas in Irving; a standing figure of Texas pioneer, Major George B. Erath, on display at the Texas

Rangers Hall of Fame; and a nine-foot statue of John Wayne for the John Wayne Airport in Orange County California. The sculpture of John Wayne is so life-like that, upon it’s unveiling, it prompted his children to remark, “This is the first time I’ve seen my Father since he passed away. It looks like he’s gonna take another step forward. You caught the walk, the wardrobe, the attitude and most importantly the spirit of the man. Thank you.” Robert created his largest bronze for the Pioneer Plaza at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas. The piece, a cattle drive, includes seventy longhorn steers herded by three riders on horseback. Completed in the mid 1990’s, the work took him two and a half years to finish. The bronze trail drive covers four acres and was a break-through in that the artist designed both the sculptures as well as the landscaping. This monumental bronze piece has the honor of being the most photographed landmark in Dallas. The process of producing a monument starts with the

creation of a small scale model called a Maquette. Maquettes are between twelve and thirty-six inches tall and are primarily used to ensure that the client and the artist have the same vision of the completed piece. If there are any major changes needed, they are made in the small size and once the client has agreed that the Maquette is a good representation of the final piece the process of producing the final full-sized monument in clay is started. Many painstaking and precise steps are required to complete the finished piece. When the sculpture is finished to the artist’s satisfaction the client is brought in to view the final product. Once approved, the piece moves on to a foundry where molds are made and wax patterns are fashioned from the molds and prepared for casting into bronze.

anything unless it relates to my own experience. Occasionally I’ll read some historical story and try to recreate that moment, but I have to be careful to make the costumes and weapons correct. Cattle ranching may be a vanishing way of life, but the basic principles are still much the same as they were a hundred years ago.” Although Robert Summers has garnered many awards, one of his greatest honors came on July 4, 1975 when, then Governor, Dolph Briscoe and the Texas Legislature named him as the official Texas Bicentennial Artist. His works have appeared in hundreds of newspapers and periodicals world-wide, including: Texas Highways, National Geographic and Southwest Art. Robert resides in his boyhood home of Glen Rose and besides being one of Texas’ finest artists also plays bagpipes, practices falconry, acts and sings contemporary Christian music… a Renaissance man carrying on the true cowboy spirit of this small Texas town. You can see Robert Summers nationally acclaimed work at The White Buffalo Gallery located in historic downtown Glen Rose, Texas. The White Buffalo Gallery 200 NE Barnard Street Glen Rose, Texas 214-914-5372

Equally important are Summers’ beautiful paintings of the contemporary West. “I paint the people and things I know,” he observes. “I find it hard to paint www.myhometownstexas.com

The Vision It was bone chillin’ cold, that winter night as he saddled up the bay was his turn to watch the herd jist another part of drawin’ a cowboy’s pay As he rode off into the darkness he snugged his hat down tight and turned his collar up against a wind, that howled and began to bite As he circled the herd with the bay at a slow and peaceful gait everything seemed in order and for the sun he now had to wait He was tryin’ not to fall asleep when he heard the most beautiful sound it came from all around him its source could not be found A million angelic voices filled the darkened night when all at once the darkness was replaced, with a brilliant light He could scarce believe the herd didn’t move or what was takin’ place then he heard the voice of God and saw Christ’s holy face He got down off the bay and bowed down on his knee God said, “I gave you my son to light the way to me”. “Go forth from here and live your life anew Christ was born and died to give everlastin’ peace and life to you” Well the voice and light were gone as he raised up from the ground the sun was jist beginning to rise as he mounted and made one last round As he rode back to the bunk house safe and warm it suddenly dawned on him what day this was, this was Christmas morn. 10 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Calling all Sellers, Come One Come All!!!

It’s a new day in real estate in Hood County. The market has all the makings of becoming a seller’s market. What does that mean? It means that there is more demand for homes than there are homes to purchase. In real estate, this demand is referred to as Inventory. Inventory in Hood County is down by 21.3%. Yet, closed sales are up in Hood County by 18.7%. The median sales price has remained relatively consistent over the last two years at approximately $160,000. Homes are selling at approximately $94 per square foot, which is slightly up from 2012. All of these statistics further prove that home sales in Hood County continue to be very strong. We may not have much water in the lake right now but Real Estate is Good! We have a saying at Century 21 Shirley Hooks, “If you can dream of a new home, you can see that new home in your mind. If you can see that new home in your mind, you are more apt to make it happen and you can own that home. Shirley Hooks LLC. Without dreams, what would keep life exciting? 122 N. The Real Estate Advisor Dream It. See It. Own It™

Say hello to an extraordinary little boy named Nicholas!

N

icholas is soon to be the youngest home owner in Hood County, yes you read that right, home owner. Alongside his equally extraordinary Mom, Katie, Nicholas is thriving. In this day and age, one searches long and hard to find the EXTRA in a sea of ordinary. Although the journey to today has been a long journey, Nicholas and Katie will be moving into their new home very soon. While that may seem ordinary to you, these two individuals are anything but!! Over the next several issues, we will take you through Nicholas’s

journey. It is an amazing story to say the least. Nicholas, soon to be three years old, came into this world with many challenges. On the day he turned six months old, his family got his diagnosis. He was diagnosed with spastic quad cerebral palsy, cortical visual impairment (legally blind), microcephaly (small head), epilepsy, and failure to thrive resulting in the addition of a feeding tube. Doctors told Katie that Nicholas would always be catatonic.

Shortly after receiving this life changing diagnosis, the family decided to move to Texas. This move has proven over and over again to be a great choice for the young family. In Texas, Nicholas has gained access to a great team of doctors and caregivers. With much love and devotion from his mother and family, Nicholas has fought very hard to prove the doctors ALL wrong! He has a flirtatious personality and always has a great big smile on his face! He loves being around people! Nicholas recently has

been able to eat some without his feeding tube, his sight is thought to be improving, and he is able to bang his spoon on his tray. He is starting to talk, saying Mamma, Papa, and High Five !!! These things may seem like small steps for some, but to Nicholas and those that love him, these behaviors are nothing short of a miracle!!! Thanks to the help of real estate professionals and local builders, Nicholas is going to be moving into a home built especially for his needs. Follow this story in the next issue to find out more about Nicholas and his amazing journey. ∼Anonymous

Top Agent Spotlight

Congrats to the Top Performing Agents for 10/15/13-11/15/13

3 Critical Factors in Selecting the Right Agent Finding the right listing agent is the most important factor in the successful sale of your home. However, it is not easy. When looking for an agent, consider several factors: • Professionalism is a must. It is important to remember that the Realtor® you choose is representing you and you must feel confident that your listing agent is always dressed appropriately, on-time, possesses strong oral and written skills and above all, exhibits integrity. • Reputation/experience! If your agent has 10 to 20 years of experience and strong references, you are well on your way to selling your home. An experienced agent knows how to negotiate and avoid road blocks that can prevent a home sale from imploding. • Finally, make sure that your agent has a good working partnership with all venues involved in the sale of your home (other real estate companies, mortgage firms, title companies, inspectors, etc.). Selling a home in today’s marketplace requires experience, skill, and a great network of potential buyers. Step 1 for success is to select the right agent for the job. Interview no less than 3 agents and select the one that you believe meets and exceeds the criteria listed above. Feel free to contact me for a free market assessment of your home. I need more properties for my buyers. Tammy Dill, Realtor® Century 21 Shirley Hooks

Considering Placing a Home on a Rental Program? Picking a great property manager for your rental properties is one of the most important tasks you’ll undertake once you’ve actually found a good rental. In searching for a manager, you’ll want to do a thorough interview. In this series, we will discuss the questions you will want to ask when looking for your Property Manager. The first question is: 1 – Cost: Managers generally charge a monthly fee to watch and maintain your property. Those fees can range from as low as 5%, to upwards of 20%. Obviously, you should look for a company that charges less and provides more services. At Century 21, we offer 2 property management programs to serve our owners. Our Gold Level Service is 10% and our Platinum Level Service is 20%. Our Platinum Service saves an average property owner, 17% in repairs and care services per year.

MUSIC MUSIC

Fort Worth native, Randy Brown, has been a singer, songwriter, musician and showman for over a decade and for almost six years he has been sharing his talents with those lucky enough to hear him at The Railhead in Willow Park most every Tuesday evening. The popular singer/songwriter series at The Railhead draws a great crowd each week. “It’s always fun! We have regulars that never miss a show and then there’s always new folks coming in,” says the country artist. “We start swapping

songs about 7:30 p.m. each week and have had everybody you can think of at one time or another, including legends like Gary P. Nunn to new Texas/Red Dirt guys like Johnny Cooper and Deryl Dodd.”

Randy’s passion for music began at an early age and was nurtured by a youth filled with rodeo dances, chuck wagon campfires and big dancehall nights. His earliest memories are of cowboy suits, twin fiddles and crying steel guitars at honky-tonks in Fort Worth where every Saturday night was a who’s - who of real Texas music. In fact, his live album, “Heroes, Legends, Friends, and Me” was recorded in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards and includes many songs from Randy’s influences that have been part of his arsenal for years.

When she bought the building at 608 Big Bend Trail in Glen Rose, she did not even consider opening a business, as she thought it would be just an investment. But, soon after that, things started coming together to create a coffee shop. As she became more and more involved in what she was going to do with the building, she realized that months before she was prophesied over at church. The message was “I see a

The Happy Hippo is a community meeting place. You can stop by and there is always someone to listen to what you have to say. It is home away from home for most of the community and it is a place you can feel God’s presence. TJ has a kind heart for others and likes to hear the stories from her customers. Most know if they need someoneto talk to or just need a prayer, they can go to the Happy Hippo and a purchase is not required. When you visit, you will see scripture all over the walls. TJ is a pleasure to be around, and that is probably why her business is a huge success already.
