Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Roses are red, violets are blue, and the rest of this rhyme can say anything you want it to. This month’s most popular holiday too often focuses on romantic love when it should be about celebrating all the special people in our lives — family, friends, colleagues and those who make us smile throughout the day. For me, that’s not only my team here, but also all of you. Taking pictures of events, talking to artists and store owners, and finding out what is going on in the communities has been so wonderful this last year, that I wish I could send all of you a real Valentine in

the mail. Please accept this big thank you written here instead, because you really do make my day, every day! Not only do we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, but also President’s Day. This is the day chosen to celebrate two of our greatest presidents, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. There will be special sales, so take advantage and shop, shop, shop. In Somervell County this month, there are two evenings to enjoy a group campfire and roast s’mores. One is at Dinosaur Valley State Park and one at Oakdale Park. At the very end of the month will be the 20th Annual Somervell County PRCA Rodeo at the Expo Center. This is sure to be exciting with some of the

world’s best cowboys and cowgirls competing. In Hood County, some of the events occurring are: Revolver Brewing Tours on Saturdays at noon, two plays at Granbury Theater Company “Sweater Curse: A Yarn about Love” and “Romance, Romance”, and the Sweetheart and Orphans XV Car Show on the Square. Big City Music Revue in the Granbury Live Theater opens on Feb. 22. It’s true! You heard it right! Under the new ownership and direction of “Sean Mitchell Productions”, you will once again be able to enjoy nostalgic, family friendly concerts, at the former Granbury Live Theater!

Amy Smith 682-229-8884 amy@myhometownstexas.com

What will now be known as “Big City Music Revue”, will include most of the members of the former cast of The Granbury Live Theater, plus tons of new faces and talent! On March 1 & 2, Granbury will celebrate Texas Independence Day with numerous fun events, including bull riding on the City Beach! (See more info on page 8) Of course, all of these events and more can be found on our monthly calendar pages, near the center of the magazine. Enjoy this cold weather, as spring and then summer will be here before you know it!

ello fellow film and entertainment lovers, both novice and professional, young and old alike! Welcome to a fun place, here in this great publication, where we can journey together in all things Hollywood. I am so excited and grateful to be able to share with you my passion for film, television, and the arts. Please join me here every month for the latest and greatest escapes that tinsel town has to offer us, as I delve into the world of film and entertainment. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy Ray Sorrells. I have spent fourteen years toiling away in the film industry (19982012) working in production and post-production, on-location and in-house (studio) projects. I worked directly on large budget, big studio films all over the U.S. and Canada. I held numerous positions in various films from the lowly file clerk to the department head and everything in between. My knowledge in film production is vast and varied, and my interest is ever-growing. Though I am no longer professionally employed in the film industry, my contacts (and big nose) keep me planted firmly in all that is Hollywood! I certainly have an inside track to many celebrities, insights from behind the scenes (current and past films), and naturally an overwhelming abundance of personal stories just waiting to be told. Originally from Dublin, TX and having attended Weatherford College in my younger days, I feel truly back at home in this area. As much as I loved and will always miss my life on the road as a gypsy in film-making, I am even happier with my decision to be back in Texas and close to family and friends. Growing up one might guess I had an inclination to show business and movies, right? Well,

not really. No more than the average kid who would daydream of being the real Karate Kid or possibly being Elliot and best friends with E.T..At most, I would have wanted to have the ability of the young Drew Barrymore in “Firestarter” to keep pesky older brothers at bay…but beyond that, I had no interest or desire to learn filmmaking or what it was like for those that do. My professional introduction into movies is quite a story itself. In 1997, I moved from Weatherford to San Angelo to attend Angelo State University. I took a semester off to work and save money before hitting the books again. (Atypical 20’s move, right?) I quickly landed a full-time job at a Holiday Inn working as both a night bell-boy and at the front desk. One late evening, I checked in a group of people who were scouting the area for film locations on a movie that was shooting in Dallas. Over the next two weeks, I got to know and hang out with several of the crew members while they socialized and I asked every question in the book about their jobs. My gift of gab back then was welldocumented I can tell you. Upon their departure, I was assured we would keep in touch and was told if an entry-level position ever opened up, I would get a call. Oh sure, I thought. A million dollars will also fall from the sky and hit me in the head. Then low and behold – the call! After some excited school girl screams and more than a few high-five’s all the way around, I boarded a plane for Los Angeles for the quickest training period in an unknown industry known to man. A month later I was in Vancouver, British Columbia working on my first film. From there, it was city after city, film to film. My introduction to the movies wasn’t a particular typical one either. I didn’t go to film school. I wasn’t a struggling artist that had moved to Los Angeles and had paid my dues waiting tables, nor did I even have the distinct desire to get into film. I was just a curious young guy interested in some people doing something

www.myhometownstexas.com

so fascinating to me, that I just kept talking. I quickly learned that my fate was unlike those around me. Those other young men and women had been in the trenches for years already trying to earn the prized spot on working on a large studio film shooting on-location. Those who had applied for special programs to work with professional crew members, and those who interned for free a thousand miles from home for six months just for the experience and the resume qualifications. Here I was, new and inexperienced, getting paid to do a job that others my age would kill for. At first I just felt lucky, but soon lucky turned into un-deserving and quite frankly, unqualified. I was never told that or made to feel that way by anyone. That is something I put upon myself, not having the vast experience or the same conviction about film work that my colleagues had. I made up my mind that I would earn my keep and that no job would be too menial. I would volunteer for even the most mundane and unpopular tasks, speaking to everyone, and being the first one in and the last one to leave. Every day. From that first day of working, I loved it all, the entire business. I learned that behind the scenes is where it’s all at from the deal making, to on-set antics. I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. So that is what I hope to offer here. An insightful and sometimes humorous look into the entertainment that we spend our leisure time viewing. I will be watching and giving reviews of films that are coming out and talking about ones that are currently still in production,

and even the occasional bigname interview. With so much material to view in this multimedia age; films, television, pod-casts, film festivals, online viewing options, plays, award shows, national and local film events…well, one can get dizzyheaded keeping up. I hope to showcase a sprinkling from all of these entertainment platforms in this column, along with some fun facts you might not know. Also included will be stories and films connected to certain times of the year. Holiday vintage movies, for instance, provide the nostalgia needed to bring one around into the spiritof the season. Local filmmakers are also a great source of inspiration and can provide us with stories and tales that may hit a little closer to home. Live music performers and various venues in and around our area will surely grace the column, as well as a good pinch of Hollywood gossip and latest news. My sources and friends are long and seasoned in the industry, blessing me with many strings to pull! I hope you’ll join me here every month and follow along as I do what I love to do best … film jive! Most of all, I hope that you enjoy the column as much as I already do and we can discover together why there really is no business like showbusiness! By: Jimmy Ray Sorrells

my Klemer has a fun event every month called Corks and Canvas. It is held at D’Vine Wine on the Historic Square in Granbury. She teaches art while you enjoy the ambiance of a hometown winery. When

I arrived at D’Vine Wine, I was greeted by Amy. I looked around and the room was full with perhaps 25 to 30 people. The people in this painting class like to develop their creative abilities, and have fun at the same time. Painting is so relaxing and when you add a glass of wine, it helps you forget the everyday problems and lets you focus on the canvas. When you complete the class, you have a beautiful canvas painting that you created

to hang in your home. I believe anyone can paint under Amy’s instruction. She not only has natural born talent, but she has the education to back it up. Amy graduated in 2002 from the highly esteemed Savannah College of Art and Design. During her tenure, she studied various art mediums and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on graphic design and art history. She loves to explore all types of media, and really enjoys being creative every day. Originally from Florence, Mississippi, Amy has made Granbury her home for the better part of ten years. As steadfast as she is smart, Amy

Dr. Padget built a clinic next to the Opera House which has now been torn down and later built the large clinic by Lake Granbury Medical Center. He had over 6,000 patients and the oldest health practice in Granbury. Dr. Padget delivered the first baby at Lake Granbury Medical Center.

Pamela Estes Padget reminiscing about Dr. Larry Padget, her Valentine Dr. Larry Padget passed away on November 25, 2013,at 75 years old, after a 13-year battle with renal cell cancer. Trips to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston were made 102 times. For 41 years, and up to the day he died, he practiced medicine.

Dr. Padget met Pamela in 1990 and they were married for twenty-two years. In 2005, Pamela convinced Larry to move his practice to the square at Pamela and Company. Pamela and Larry liked having a profession together.

Somervell County Expo Center holds the Nolan River Kennel Club Dog Show in early

January every year. Animal lovers really appreciate this show. About 2,000 dogs of all breeds, ages, and size from all over the Southwest compete for conformation and obedience championship titles.

They ate lunch together as well as seeing each other many times a day. They loved being together all the time. Also, Pamela stated that Larry was quite an artist and he would paint pictures of her and she has a lot of them at home. You could tell by the gleam in Pamela’s eye that she truly loved Larry, and he truly loved her. She

said Larry lived every day like it was going to be their last. Pamela quoted Larry’s mottos for when she asked him to do something, “Yes, Dear” and, “I’ll get right on it.” Pamela’s profession includes Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a substance abuse provider for TxDOT, and a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. She is currently the author of two books in the self-help books. Since 2010, Pamela and Larry’s daughter, Amy Revett has been working in the same building as a social worker with children’s medicaid. I know that Pamela is the counselor, but it seems we all could learn a lot from Dr. Larry Padget.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

When buying your new home the FIRST thing you should do is get prequalified for a mortgage. A mortgage is a loan secured by real estate and most home purchases involve some sort of financing.

What is involved in getting prequalified?

To get prequalified, a mortgage loan application needs to be submitted to a licensed mortgage loan originator. There are three primary components to the application: credit, income and assets. By providing this basic information, you will be able to find out: -- What kind of credit you have -- What your mortgage rate will be -- What loan program(s) you qualify for -- How much house you can afford -- Total funds needed to buy the house

Why is it important to get prequalified?

-- Focused Search! By knowing how much you can afford, you

will be able to focus on homes in your price range which saves you the disappointment of finding a house you love, but are unable to afford.

www.myhometownstexas.com

(As stated by NTREIS from 01/01/2013 – 12/31/2013)

-- Saves Time! Your agent is working hard to provide excellent service by matching you with homes that meet your needs, are in the area you want and within your budget. As a buyer, you want to focus your time on those properties you may potentially buy.

-- Buying Power! When presenting an offer on a home, it shows

that you are ready, willing and able to buy. This makes your offer more attractive to sellers than other offers which do not have a prequalification letter accompanying them.

Packing up and Moving With Your Horse

Moving from one home to another can be a stressful experience. Now, add large animals, horses, tack and equipment and stress levels can skyrocket! There are few things tougher than hunting for and purchasing that perfect new equestrian home and property. The following tips and suggestions are from my 30 years experience as a horse owner and REALTOR®. 1. GET QUALIFIED! This is the most important step. Do this before you go shopping for your property. Find a lender that will be able to prequalify you and the horse property you are buying.

Some lenders do not loan on horse property so you must find one that is willing to lend in this specific market. Century 21 Shirley Hooks can provide a list if you need one. 2. DECIDE ON YOUR PROPERTY NEEDS. Now that you’re qualified and know you want property for your animals, set your priorities. Decide which is most important, the house or the animals. If you have an unlimited budget, this will not be a concern. If you are like most, you will have to decide if you’ll take a smaller house to have the livestock or horse facilities you require. Maybe you just need a pen for one horse and would like a large home. Can you build a barn and pens if you find your ideal home? If you’re involved in extensive horse activities, you may require a larger facility. 3. FIND YOUR REALTOR. Not only do you need a REALTOR®

TIME HOMEBUYERS MAY QUESTIONS FIRST HAVE ABOUT HOME INSPECTIONS

How do I find a reputable Home Inspector, and who pays for the inspection? There are a couple of ways to find a reputable home inspector. Either you as a buyer can research on your own, talk to family and friends, or have your Texas Realtor recommend several trustworthy home inspectors from which to choose. As the buyer, after deciding on a home inspector it will be up to you to pay the inspector directly for the inspection. Depending on the age/ size of the home the report may be completed in one day or may take several days to complete. Keep in mind, whoever you choose must be licensed by the Texas Real Estate Commission. Why a home inspection? Most likely this is going to be one of the most sizeable investments home buyers will make. A home inspector will be able to answer any questions that come up during the inspection and point out items that need regular maintenance or recognize any problems. Upon completion of the inspection and review of the report, talk with your Texas Realtor to determine if there are any issues that need to be resolved. Several scenarios may appear, such as asking the seller to pay for certain repairs, seller not willing to pay for repairs, or you as the buyer agreeing to purchase the property as is. These are only a few examples that might occur after the inspection has been completed. Talk with your Texas Realtor, as they are experienced in the homebuying process and will make suggestions that are right for you.

TOLL FREE 855-482-9985 www.century21shooks.com

experienced in finding your home, you need someone who’s knowledgeable about your animals’ needs. Professionally licensed and trained, a REALTOR® can save you time, money and frustration. Not all agents know about horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, or other animals. Ask family, friends, and neighbors for recommendations about agents. Ask the agent about his/ her experience and find out about their firm. Do they have experience with animals or property allowing animals? Does this agent understand the facilities needed in an effective barn, features needed, including water supply, etc.? CHECKLIST: Have available for your REALTOR® the following information: 1. Number of family members and their ages. 2. Number of bedrooms and baths needed. 3. Locations preferred. 4. Special school districts required.

5. House amenities required: i.e. pool, fireplace, privacy, highway access, recreational facilities, etc. 6. Size of property required (acreage) Also, make a list of the types and numbers of animals. Pigs and exotic animals may require a certain zoning as compared to horses or sheep. Let your agent know what you do with your animals. If you trail ride, do you need access to trails out of your house or can you haul? Do you need an arena? Do you want to live in the mountains, flat areas, hills or close to the city? It’s up to you to educate your REALTOR® as to your requirements. The more information your agent has, the easier it is to find just the right property. As a REALTOR who specializes in horse property, I can tell you that I can NEVER have too much information. Good luck and happy trails. By: Linda Nelson, Realtor ®

What is the role of a home inspector? The responsibilities of a home inspector are to “objectively make a visual examination of the physical structure and the systems of the house, from the roof to the foundation,” this is according to the American Society of Home Inspectors. They will do a thorough inspection of the house and itemize repairs and recognize areas that have not been maintained. This is a short example of the duties of an inspection and you as the buyer should keep in contact with the inspector. It should be noted that if an inspector does not have access to certain areas, then they would not foresee any unexpected defects. During the inspection, you do not have to be present, but it is to your advantage to be available. This will give you as the buyer, an “up close” look at the property you are considering purchasing. Most inspectors will be more than willing to answer questions during the inspection. When do I get the inspection scheduled? Your Texas Realtor will review with you the section in the contract pertaining to the “option period”. This is also referred to as the termination option period. This is the time or number of days that inspections can be conducted. This gives you, the buyer, time to negotiate with sellers regarding any repairs that need to be completed while you still have the option to terminate the contract. Stephanie Eoff, Realtor ®

Theater- Granbury Theatre Company present s: The theater scene has been all ‘a buzz’ about Elaine Liner who takes center stage as the actor, leaving us to be her critics. In a masterful display of literary training, her performance is dramatic, charming, full of wit, hope, sadness, very smart while told with style and elegance. “Longtime Dallas arts critic Elaine Liner recently added playwright to her resume when her solo comedy, Sweater Curse: A Yarn About Love, debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland this past August to sold out houses and 5 star reviews.”

THEATRE THEATRE

“Sweater Curse: A Yarn about Love”

“The funny, poignant play weaves together Liner’s obsessions with knitting, great literature that mentions knitting (think The Odyssey and A Tale of Two Cities), old movies in which Bette Davis knits, and the knotty problems of romance. The term “sweater curse” refers to an old wives’ tale that warns never to knit for one you love; he (or she) will leave before you finish the project.” -Jennifer Chininis Editor in Chief Culture Map Dallas.

Elaine Liner has a very full and accomplished resume. The founder of ‘Be a Media Darling’, theater critic, arts blogger, feature writer at Dallas Observer, theater critic at Dallas Observer, Village Voice media writer, editor and freelance writer-editor-critic as well as cofounder of Theater Jones. With her Masters from SMU, Liner taught writing and criticism on the college level. AND she is coming to the Granbury Opera House!

K

aty Keenie’s journey in the music world began at five years of age when her dad heard George Strait’s classic country song, “The Chair”, and promptly decided to move his family from Ontario, Canada to Texas. From the moment they planted their roots in Texas Katie felt right at home. Although she has always loved horses and participated in cutting horse competitions for years, her music career is currently taking priority in her life. Her many trips to Nashville along with playing at local venues, not to mention spending a large amount of her time writing her own songs, is a time consuming passion. “I’m a singer/ songwriter and I love it!” says Katy. The talented artist is no stranger to hard work and says the best piece of advice she has ever had comes from fellow artist Johnny Lee who passed along the wisdom of the

great Loretta Lynn, “write, write, write!”; and Katy is doing just that. She is currently in a twelve song production deal with JH Entertainment out of Nashville with her career being endorsed by Rios of Mercedes Boot Company and Icehole Coolers. Katy had the honor of winning Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40 Future Star Competition and counts the radio legend as one of her biggest fans and most loyal supporters. She has also had the privilege of opening for Rick Trevino and Johnny Lee; even singing a duet with Lee of his 1980 hit, “Looking for Love”. Locally, you can hear Katy perform at Fire Oak Grill and Copper Creek Restaurant in Weatherford on nights when they feature top entertainers from around the area. Dining Extensive remodelling was done to the B.M. Estes building, built in 1893, to provide an atmosphere of ambience in an inviting environment. The very tall 1700’s European castle doors leading into the group dining area are unusual and beautiful. To contact Farina’s Winery & Café for additional information call 817-579-5300.

F

The wide-ranging menu offers authentic Italian cuisine and features artisan cheese, soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas and steaks. Many of the specialties are from Farina’s family home recipes. Baked lasagne, which has been served in Farina’s Restaurants since 1951, is one of the delicious Sicilian family recipes. Lunch is served daily and happy hour is offered Monday-Friday from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Farina’s Winery produces two wines: Farina’s White blend and Red blend. Farina’s does take reservations for parties of all sizes, and it is one of the few restaurants in the Granbury area that provides private dining for groups of up to 75 people.

DINING DINING

arina’s Winery and Café is located on the Historic Square in Granbury. Their slogan is “Where Friends Meet” which means that not only do friends meet here to catch up and enjoy a bottle of wine together, but it is where new friends meet too.

And, after a romantic dinner, why not stay at Casa Farina? It is as simple to get there as a ride in an elevator to the third floor above Farina’s. There are three luxurious suites to choose from, all with Jacuzzi tubs. From a pre-Civil War bedroom to a Renaissance suite, they are all updated with modern conveniences so that you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Plan to stay here for your next getaway or special occasion. Reservations at www.casafarina.com or call 817-579-5600.
