It’s June - Time to Celebrate Wonderful Dads Everywhere! “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” are the sage and powerful words of American poet, author and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou, who died last month on May 28th. Thinking about those words takes me back to my childhood and times with my wonderful Dad. As an adult I’ve gained so

much more appreciation for the insightful and meaningful words that Dad drilled into my head on a daily basis – “use your fork!”, when I would unconsciously pick something up off my plate with fingers at the dinner table – “you get what you pay for”, when he was inspecting the seams of every garment I wanted to buy at the department store – “be particular”, my favorite as it applies to so many of life’s situations. Over the years, I have said exactly these words to my own children on more than one occasion and I hope, like me, they grow to appreciate the wisdom in them, but, more than

Okay, so we all know by now that Marvel’s X-Men franchise is a huge hit among movie-goers. What we might not have expected, however, is that X-Men: Days of Future Past would have taken the holiday weekend’s top spot with an estimated $111 million dollar opening! That’s sure to put smiles on the faces of the star-studded franchise, and inevitably bring us more mutant, action-packed thrillers from the film series. This super-hero film, based on the fictional X-Men characters appearing in Marvel Comics was directed by Bryan Singer. In the film, the X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. I was lucky enough to work as a crew member of X-Men: First Class back in 2010, and I can attest to the ingenious talent, both on screen and off, that accounts for the huge success this franchise is seeing. While X-Men was taking top honors this weekend, there were a few other films holding their own. “Blended”, a romantic comedy once again starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore

did quite well, nearing the 20 million mark. After a bad blind date, a man and woman find themselves stuck at the same resort for families, where their attraction grows as their respective kids benefit from the burgeoning relationship. This film has been portrayed by the media and reviewers as two-fold. There is the dismayed stating it’s just another SandlerBarrymore rehash of everything else they’ve done together. Others believe the film is quite humorous with a different and relevant storyline, and holds up very well on its own. (This movie-goer has yet to have a personal opinion until I see it first hand, though it’s hard not to enjoy the comedic pairing in previous work) I do, however, predict incredibly high DVD rentals. I am now extremely pleased to announce that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have finally married! With any luck, we won’t have to hear about them on a daily, consistent basis. (Until the divorce of the century takes place? Okay, okay. Shame on me! Bad writer!) We have been barraged and forced for months on end to endure speculation after speculation regarding the when, where, and how of the couple’s nuptials. Turns out Florence was the place, Memorial Day weekend was the time, and not-so-low-key was the how! With a reported price tag of astronomical figures, the couple spared no expense in showing the world how a “classy” pair gets hitched. Among reported huge gasps from the audience, the bride, speculatively, wore white. If Kim and Kanye aren’t your speed, there’s always the nowinfamous Solange Knowles and Jay-Z elevator fight to feed your appetite. Yet another scandalous event coming straight from the

top of the hip-hop world of entertainment. Sources close to the superstar say the fight, which was supposed to have stayed unseen to the public, was over Jay-Z flirting with another woman prior to the event. Solange, always the fervent supporter of older sis Beyonce, was reportedly furious when Jay-Z didn’t even deny it to her. Once the videotape was leaked to the public, Beyonce herself added fuel to the fire by posting random tweets about choices and people you surround yourself with, while never speaking directly about the encounter. In fact, none of the parties have yet to speak about the occurrence. However, all three have now surfaced together, taking selfies and posing for photographs at various functions. As Beyonce has said, the family is making a very strong united front and that everyone is intact. What say you? An interesting piece of hot gossip and just gotta know all the details? … or a private family affair that should never have been leaked to the public? “Perhaps both”, Jim Dunlap said. “People obviously want to know what the heated fight was about, now that it’s been made public. But people are also very respectful of Beyonce, knowing how close she is to her sister.” I’d have to agree with Jim here.

is in talks with Lionsgate/ Summit to star as famed magician Harry Houdini in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. Dean Perisot is set to direct the film. The story recasts Houdini as not just a master escape artist but an investigator of the world of the occult. Based on Larry Sloman’s book of the same name. Depp is coming off of two disappointments with Transcendence and The Lone Ranger. However, he is set to revisit two blockbuster franchises with Pirates of the Carribean 5, and a sequence to Alice in Wonderland, both Disney films. Lionsgate is eyeing a November 2014 start date which would push Pirates’ production to early 2015. Alice 2, which is known as Through The Looking Glass, will shoot next, after he finishes the Whitey Bulger crime drama Black Mass. Art

Collecting and Preserving Art of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas For years, Elizabeth and Harold Lawrence’s passion for collecting and preserving the art of indigenous peoples of the Americas sent them traveling through North America, Mexico and South America. Ten years ago they opened the Museum of the Americas and made their collection available to the public. These ten years have been an ongoing effort to create exhibits that expose and educate visitors to the diverse range, vitality and artistic merits of material culture and folk art of the Americas through a broad array of crafts, divided by tribal groups, and comprehensive by regions.

He grew up on the Oregon coast, served in Alaska in the Coast Guard , taught on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Washington, was in graduate school in Phoenix, Arizona, and spent summers in Calgary, Canada. He has spent the last 40 years in Texas.

The Museum offers an extensive permanent collection and several special exhibits each year. The current exhibit, Quanah and Cynthia Ann Parker: A Pictorial History,tells the story of two icons of Texas history. Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanches at the age of nine and virtually kidnapped again 24 years later and returned to her family where she remained an unhappy prisoner for the rest of her life. Quanah Parker, her son, became a Comanche leader and led the last Comanche band to surrender at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1875. This exhibit runs through July 31st.

The Museum commemorates El Dia de los Muertos in October and there is a yearly exhibit in November / December featuring over 100 hand-crafted Nativities from the Americas, each reflecting the artisan’s personal view of the world and story of the birth of Jesus. Leading Ladies Leads the way with plenty of Laughter! THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE proudly presents their next production, LEADING LADIES, written by Ken Ludwig, and produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. This hilarious comedy is directed by Weatherford High School’s Theatre Director, Angela Arthurs, with Jaclyn Justice as Assistant Director and Edwina Himes as Stage Manager. The show begins Friday, June 13, 2014 and runs weekends through June 29. In this comedy farce by the author of Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, two

English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing “Scenes from Shakespeare” on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an elderly lady in York is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they decide to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get there, they find out that the relatives are not nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound, especially when Leo

falls head-over-heals in love with the old woman’s vivacious niece, Meg, who is engaged to the local minister. Meg knows that there is a wide world out there, but it is not until she meets “Maxine and Stephanie” that she finally gets a taste of it. Brehm developed an appreciation for guitar driven music while listening to the likes of George Benson, Carlos Santana, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He studied jazz guitar at the University of North Texas under the tutelage of such notable instructors as Fred Hamilton and Jack Peterson. with a friend and an appetite!” said a recent customer at Weatherford’s newest restaurant to open on the historic downtown square. John Shepherd and his wife Jennifer have opened a burger haven that rivals even the most iconic of Texas burger joints. With a generous selection of delicious specialties, all sandwiched between John’s secret bread recipe, this promises to be the go-to burger restaurant for years to come!

The décor features an array of car parts that were either donated by friends and regulars or come from John’s personal collection. The walls are covered with art pieces that will rotate throughout the year.
