Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

On Your Mark – Get

Set – Go! It’s July in Parker County The busy summer season is here and it starts off with a BANG! There seems to be no end to the fun events and entertainment in Parker County this July. Once again, the City of Hudson Oaks and the East Parker County Chamber of Commerce will host Boomin’ 4th, a free event held on July 4th at Gene L. Voyles Park from 6 to 10 p.m. In honor of America’s 238th birthday you’re encouraged to wear your best red, white and blue, bring your family and friends, a picnic basket and lawn chairs and enjoy

a fun community event. The evening includes arts and crafts, food trucks, face painting, photo booths and a fireworks display. Patriotic music provided by Wynn Williams and the Hazers will put you in a celebratory mood in preparation for what promises to be an even more spectacular fireworks show than last years! No sooner do we finish celebrating the 4th of July than we find ourselves looking forward to the 30th Annual Parker County Peach Festival. This popular event will be held Saturday, July 12thfrom 8a.m. to 5p.m and features many arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, cooking contests, musical entertainment, a

food court, the Annual Peach Pedal Bike Ride and, of course, peaches galore! Check out this month’s article in the Activities section on the Festival for more information on the event. Aledo continues to entertain throughout the month of July with 1st Fridays, held in the historic downtown area of the City. Organizers are planning new activities to add to the already popular event mainstays which include art, crafts, food and entertainment. Area parks and pools along with Splash Kingdom Water Park are open and bustling with activity as the weather begins to creep up towards triple digits; lakes are up and ready for water sports after all the much needed rain! JULY HEATS UP THE BOXOFFICE

As

the month of June closes its door and July heats up, we are seeing record numbers turn up for events all throughout our DFW area. Film camps and creative media workshops in Fort Worth and Dallas are reporting high interest this year, as well as several music venues in North Texas. As we celebrate (and devilishly enjoy) all that is Hollywood and big boxoffice, let’s not forget to enjoy our own attractions and local grown talent. We are so lucky to have an abundance of entertainment right here at home, that offers first-rate talent and learning experiences. For instance, SMU and Dallas Film Society offer classes during the summer months for film production. This is a fantastic idea for anyone looking to get an insight into film work and get hands-on experience from professionals in the industry. Kamp Hollywood is another great experience teaching young filmmakers the ins and outs of production and is presented by The Movie Institute. Back for its 14th season, it is Dallas’s

We are just hitting our stride now as summer superheroes and funny flicks come our way. “Tammy” starring Melissa McCarthy is expected to be a sleeping hit, and even more so with expected future dvd rentals. Stemming from her popularity from films like “Bridesmaids” and her hit TV show “Mike and Molly”, McCarthy is a big pull for movie-goers and has cemented herself into the American comedy culture. “Hercules” with Dewayne “Rock” Johnson and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” are also on the short list for July to watch. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” also grossed well at the box office and again, will be a mammoth money maker in dvd sales and rentals. “Sex Tape” starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel will be in theatres July 17th, and the movie title leaves little to the imagination as to the plot of the story. Coming out July 11th is “A Long Way Down” featuring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots. The story is of four strangers who planned to jump off the same roof on New Year’s Eve join together and become surrogate family and give themselves six weeks to

find valid reasons to live. “The Fluffy Movie” starring stand-up comic Gabriel Iglesias hits theaters July 24th and captures the comic in this never before seen footage from his sold-out “Unity Through Laughter” tour. Spanning over 23 countries, and more than 400 cities, this is the summer’s must-see big screen comedy event!

George Strait at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards

June was a record-setter for one old cowboy in particular. George Strait, our native Texan country superstar, (aka: King George to his peers) rode away in the sunset breaking an attendance record at AT&T stadium with just over 104,000 people. The old record was set 33 years ago by the Rolling Stones. In total, the 62 yearold played 20 of his number one hits and ended with “This is Where the Cowboy Rides Away” (of course, right?!) from his album “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind”. George Strait was, is, and will remain a standard-bearer in the world of country music. His easy going, laid back vocal style, coupled with that familiar Texas drawl leaves no doubt who is singing the tune when one drifts across our

radio stations. He has remained popular throughout an age when country music has seen so many changes to its styles and rhythms. “King George” will be sorely missed by legions of fans. While June was a fantastic month for most artists in all genres, we have to pause and take a moment to reflect on one artist whom we’ve lost. Celebrated American author, poet, dancer, and singer Maya Angelou passed away on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86. Most notably known for her works such as “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” and “Still I Rise”, she was a child of the Jim Crow south who rose out of her surroundings and impoverished life with her works of literary art. In her early years, she was a singer and dancer of calypso music. As her adulthood blossomed, Angelou would go on to write seven autobiographies chronicling her life and personal triumphs, three books of essays, and several books of poetry. Her landmark book of 1969 “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was a lyrical account of her childhood and was among the first autobiographies by a 20th century black woman to reach a wide, general readership. She delivered her inaugural poem “On The Pulse Of The Morning” at the swearing in of Bill Clinton, and President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Jimmy Sorrells

Kelly Graham - Sculpting a Hometown Hero

S

culptor Kelly Graham and his wife Donna have called Weatherford their home for over fifteen years. Graham’s studio is located on his 100 acre ranch and has enabled him to study the animal that he captures in his sculptures up close and personal. Kelly’s life-size animal sculptures, some depicting the most famous horses in the cutting industry, are almost flawless representations of the living animal. Since many of his clients leave the horse being depicted in clay at his place for months he has the opportunity to capture their individual personalities. “Some owners know their horses characteristics as well as their own child, so as an artist, keeping the subject onsite is an important requirement to really get a good rendition,” says Graham.

close friend Sherry O. Watters, to capture one of Weatherford’s most famous hometown celebrities in bronze, Kelly was honored. “It’s always neat to do something like this when it’s honoring someone local. The fact that it is Larry Hagman makes it even that much more special,” said the artist. The statue will be a life-size 6’1” and mounted on a small platform which will hold the dates of his birth and death, Hagman’s signature and his family motto, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Feel Good” displayed at the bottom. Although Kelly’s life-size sculptures of horses have been the big dominator in his success his trophies are in big demand on the cutting horse circuit and he sells his tabletop size bronzes in editions of 30. “I’m always excited and curious about the next project around the corner,” says Graham, and we are excited as well to see the incredible work this talented artist will continue to produce in the future!

Theater he Texas Opry Theater is growing and just keeps getting better and better. The list of very happy patrons is getting larger and the crowds are growing bigger with every show. June 14th show with Whisperin’ Bill Anderson, Nadine and Michael Hix produced a sold out show at 3pm and the 8pm show was 2/3 full. Likewise, the July 5th show with the Legendary Texas Hall of Famer Gene Watson and The Farewell Party Band plus Michael Hix and Dizzy With A Dame and The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band at 3pm was a completely Sold Out house once again. Full audiences are special to all of the entertainers from the big names to our local singers and musicians. The Texas Opry Theater is a mid-size venue with 475 seats and not a bad seat in the house. When Jerry Carter, the owner and founder laid out the seating for the theater in 1991 he opted for more space between the seat rows and wider aisles to allow for more leg room and better traffic flow down the aisles. The auditorium’s acoustic’s are excellent and the sound system has been upgraded to provide the best sound possible without it not being too loud. The Bill Anderson Show debuted some of the new LED stage lights so stay tuned because soon you’ll think you are in a big theater in Branson with robo lights and spots. Soon there will be new sound fold on the walls and projection screens on both sides of the stage for sponsors and close ups of the performers on stage. New stage curtains and back drop curtains are also on their way. The Concession Stand has a new popcorn machine and “Boy, does it make really good popcorn!” You can also now use your charge or debit cards for your refreshment purchases and buy Gift Cards for future shows or to give as gifts to friends and family.

Some folks have asked what the money from the raffle is used for? The Texas Opry Theater is always upgrading and improving it’s appearance in any way possible. The new blue awnings on the outside of the buildings and the new metal roof were the first improvements to be paid for thanks to the raffle proceeds. And a new sign on the front of the Opry is the next item on the agenda. Coming up at The Texas Opry Theater on July 19th at 6pm is Ben Portsmouth from London, England. Ben is the first International Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Winner in 2012. He appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and will be on Good Morning Texas on July 11th. So tune your TV’s to see this fabulous artist pay tribute to the great Elvis Presley. The Blackwood Quartet and Randy Stockum’s Ultimate Tribute Band will back up Mr. Portsmith and Michael Hix will Emcee and Domingo Carvajal will open the show. Tickets are available on our website. Then on July 26th Rockin’ Roll Heaven Comes to The Texas Opry Theater when Lani Bartlett Stacy brings her entire cast of singers from the Grapevine Opry to Weatherford. Our very own Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band will accompany all of her marvelous singers and dancers as they take you back through the years of the 1950’s to the 1970’s in Party Thru The Years to the hits of the 50’s-70’s. Celebrating 30 Years! ACTIVITIES

The

second Saturday of July is always a special time of the year in this part of the Lone Star State as we get the opportunity to show folks why the Texas Legislature named Parker County the Peach Capital of Texas. On Saturday, July 12th the county holds its 30th Annual Peach Festival including more than 200 arts and crafts vendors, a children’s activity area, the “42” Domino Tourney, the Peach Pedal Bike Ride, a food court and non-stop entertainment throughout the day long event. The day will also feature a food contest with every entry required to contain one important ingredient… peaches, of course! The Historic Downtown area of Weatherford will, once again, be the site for the festival with the beautiful Parker County Courthouse as the backdrop for all the fun. Even on the most sweltering July day the festival organizers manage to make

visitors comfortable with misters scattered throughout the grounds and, of course, plenty of cold drinks and treats. If you like peaches you certainly won’t be disappointed with the vast array of goodies available including, homemade peach ice cream and peach cobblers along with peach juleps, smoothes, jams and salsas, not to mention just plain old peaches!

was the first weekend of summer and I was headed to the event I had been looking forward to for months. I would finally get to see my first cliff diving competition. The best part of the event, it was being held by Red Bull. Every competition I had previously seen on TV or the internet hosted by Red Bull had been nothing but pure excitement and adrenaline and I was finally getting to attend one for myself. After two long fantastic days of nothing but incredible athletes and thrilling action every direction I looked, the competition had come to an end. The podiums held their winners and the champagne had been sprayed in celebration. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series consists of seven stops at some of the most alluring diving locations around the world with the final competition taking place in the beautiful Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Within the series there are nearly twenty athletes from various countries

who are all diving to the deeps hoping to obtain the title of the world’s best cliff diver. At the most recent location of Possum Kingdom Lake, San Antonio’s own Rachelle “Rocco” Simpson claimed the first place title within the women. Diving from a 28 meter platform anchored to the side of Hell’s Gate she brought in a winning score of 222.30 with Germany’s Anna Bader coming in close with 218.70. For the past two years Rachelle has been performing in Franco Dragone’s The House of Dancing Water located in Macau, China. She has recently returned back to the United States where she has resumed her previous job in the show Azul at Sea World San Antonio to perform and practice between each World Series cliff dive. This dedicated diver shows that with hard work and a passionate heart, dreams do become reality.

Rique & Karen Azlin own two businesses in Aledo called, “That Snowball Place” and “Oliver’s Ozone Pure Water”

R

ique and Karen met in 1992 while they were in high school, when every day they would go to the snow cone stand and get a snow cone. But, when summer was over they could no longer get snow cones. When they got married and moved to Aledo they decided to have a year ‘round snowball (snow cone) business. They use authentic New Orleans flavors, and have over 100 flavors to pick from. Also, their shaved ice used to make the snowballs is purified, which makes the snowballs bigger, softer and sweeter. The inside of their business resembles a tiki hut. Their customers come year ‘round to eat snowballs. Karen says you can have your children’s birthday parties at the Snowball Place. For information call 817-205-6410. The snow cone business is open from 12 to 8 Monday through Friday, and 12 to 6 on Saturday.Stop by for a delicious snow cone at 401 North Farm Rd. 1187, Suite 103.

Rique Azlin is a fifth-generation treating Texas water with 20 years’ experience. He specializes in well water with over 2000 customers in Parker County. No other company uses ozone, which is the most powerful sanitizer

available for drinking water. Both of Rique’s grandfathers drill water wells. On the Oliver’s side of the family they have been drilling water wells all the way back to the 1800s. “Today, no other company has the reputation we do,” Rique says. “We test water for free and only recommend to you what is needed. Our systems have a five year warranty on parts and labor, which sets us apart from other companies. And, we also have a performance guarantee.” Rique guarantees that if you call two or three other companies to compare, he will get your business 100% of the time. There really is no other choice for your water treatment needs. To get more information about how Oliver’s Ozone can

Coming in July, Oliver’s Ozone will offer a pure water filling station and also provide ultra-premium bottled water. It will be available in one to five gallon bottles with the purest, best tasting water you can buy. The cost will be 60 cents per gallon, which is competitive with all other brands of water. At the water filling station you will be able to sanitize your bottles. This is something that most places don’t offer when you refill

your bottles. Rique says that some of the water coolers in the offices are loaded with bacteria because the bottled water has not been sanitized. Sanitizing your bottle with super ozoneated water will guarantee that nothing will grow in the bottle. For amazing snowballs, birthday parties, or just pure, delicious, bacteria-free drinking water, Oliver’s Ozone and That Snowball Place can satisfy your thirst.

Music/Nightlife its own,” and The Dallas Morning News following up with, “The record is a gauzy and rhythmic mix of everything from jazz to blues, R&B to rock. It’s one of those discs that grows, seeps and unfurls with each listen.” In 2012 they were nominated for Best New Artist and their album Huj! Huj! Hajrah! was named Album of the Year by Fort Worth Weekly.

Rock N’ Roll Band with Hometown Roots

One of the coolest, most original two-piece bands in North Texas has evolved into an even cooler five-piece band that delivers, what one critic called, “the most delicious slab of good ol’ fashioned rock ‘n’ roll ever heard in these parts!” For more information and a list of concert dates go to: www.foxtrotuniform.com

MUSIC

Singer, guitarist and Weatherford native Kenny Uptain along with back-up vocalist and drummer Kelly Test (CooderGraw, Polyphonic Spree) know a little bit about evolution. After being thrown out of country bands, and losing their best bud of a bass player to the working world, they decided to go the route of the two piece rock and roll band… which turned out to be a very good thing! They recorded their first full length album, “Huj! Huj! Hajrah!” in the living room of Test and its release quickly found an enthusiastic following and critical acclaim. “Two guys

with voice, guitar and drums,” one critic proclaimed, “generate the full breadth of life’s saga. With such a throbbing rhythm, bass lines are implied, almost sensed intuitively.” “Onstage, foxtrot’s music is a swampy kind of throwback rock, a gruff and raw go at the blues, led by Uptain’s smoky yet smooth voice,” noted Fort Worth Weekly writer Matthew McGowan. The accolades just kept coming with reviews from the Fort Worth Star Telegram noting, “Foxtrot Uniform’s willingness to stir together some unexpected sounds give Hajrah! A flavor all

The duo played close to two hundred shows in 2011 and, feeling a need to expand, invited Dallas musicians Robbie Saunders (Zhora, The Deadstring Brothers) and Zack Busby (The Burden Brothers, Slow Roosevelt) to join them. The addition of Saunders and Busby contributed to the layers and depth of Foxtrot’s sound. In 2013 the band rounded out their group with the addition of Fort Worth area key-board player and singer, Katie Robertson. Band members have appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, World Café with David Dye and in several independent film projects and television commercials.

Dining peach is on the menu daily at the Malt Shop in the form of shakes, malts and cones.

T

trip seem like an adventure… you’ll be so happy you went to Weatherford!” The home-made ice cream at the Malt Shop is made in small ice-cream freezers and comes in nine different flavors including banana nut and chocolate chip. Shakes can be ordered in all nine flavors but also include butterscotch. “I ordered the butterscotch malt and it was

amazing. Not too sweet, good malt content, and best of all a large only cost less than $3…delicious,” said an appreciative ice cream lover. The most popular ice cream flavor, just behind vanilla and chocolate, seems to be their fresh peach. Although most people think peach ice cream is only readily available at the Parker County Peach Festival that comes around each July,

hose of you who were around in the 1950’s and 60’s most likely remember frequenting a local drive in burger and shake place. Peppery burgers, hot dogs, crinkle cut French fries, fountain soft drinks and thick, delicious shakes and malts were the hallmark of those establishments that seem to have vanished after the arrival of fast food restaurants. But, never fear, one such eatery still exists! The Malt Shop, located on Fort Worth Hwy. in Weatherford has been serving hungry patrons delicious food and amazing ice cream treats for 55 years and counting. “It’s a diamond along the route from Fort Worth to Weatherford,” remarked one recent customer, “Stop after leaving Weatherford, not before. It will make the

Even the pink building with its black and white Malt Shop sign and covered parking area is a throwback to the days when you would drive up on a balmy summer evening, roll down the windows, order your food and simply eat outside on a picnic table or in your car. And, even though there is a convenient drive up window, sometimes it’s just nice to take time and relax while you sip on a vanilla coke or a peach shake that transports you back to simpler, less hectic days. As one Weatherford native said, “It’s been there since I was a little kid and since I’ve moved away I really miss the food… you must try the shakes and fries, they truly are a thing of beauty!”
