Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine State Park in Glen Rose has two weekends for outdoor families, with outdoor cooking workshops on the 5th-6th and 12th-13th. The Park has other numerous fun and educational activities all month long. I certainly hope that spring is just around the corner, and lots of rain. I’m ready for beautiful wildflowers and green grass, but I guess a good long, cold winter is necessary sometimes to get rid of a lot of the bugs, or at least thin them out. Of course, I’m still glad we live in Texas and not Minnesota! So many of the restaurants and venues have live music during April, and it should be perfect weather to enjoy this out on the patios. Just check out the calendar for all the listings. Speaking of outdoors, Dinosaur Valley
Somervell Expo Center has two horse shows during the month with the really little American Miniatures the 18th-20th and the Southwest Peruvian Horse Club the 25th-27th. Oakdale Park has the Paluxy River Spring Bluegrass Festival the 3rd5th. Granbury’s 5th annual Wine Walk is the 25th& 26th. I volunteered for this last year, and had the best time meeting wine connoisseurs and learning about the art of making wine and which

grapes produce what kind of wine. The best part is that the proceeds benefit local nonprofits. Granbury has an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, the 12th at the City Park from 11 am to 1 pm and it is free. Please take note of the several fundraisers scattered throughout the month. Every one of them benefits a really great cause and they are fun events. The Big City Music Revue celebrates the 60’s with “Gimme the Groove” on April 12th and 26th. I’m so glad that The Brazos drive-in theater is open for the season on Fridays and Saturdays again. Have you ever participated in a

COMING ATTRACTIONS TO THE BIG SCREEN! As spring rears its head on tinsel town, (and we all forget my disastrous results in picking Oscar winners) we anxiously await the exciting stories and blockbusters the warmer weather pushes our way. In no time, we will be kneedeep in spring love stories, summer comedies, animated adventures and superhero sequels. With the arrival of April, however, we can expect at least one mammoth storyline to trump all others. NOAH, starring Russell Crowe and directed by Darren Aronofsky, is already predicted to take top spot at theaters with this epic and historic story line. God is saddened at the wickedness of mankind and sends a great flood to destroy all life on Earth, but instructs Noah, a man “righteous in his generation”, to build a wooden ark and save a remnant of life from the Flood. Noah builds the ark and saves his family and representatives of all animals from the massive flood waters which cover the Earth. Also starring in this faith-based film by Paramount Pictures is Emma Watson, Julianne Moore, and Jennifer Connelly. The theater release date is set for Friday, March 28th, 2014. Kids of all ages are already in spring bliss with the arrival of MUPPETS MOST WANTED. Released March 21st, Walt
Disney Pictures takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters across European destinations. But mayhem soon follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine – the world’s number one criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit- and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film also stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell (from Modern Family) as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon. Challenging NOAH for the top spot of March is CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. In this actionpacked adventure (which is also in 3D), Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world after the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him. When the full scope of the plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson. Set date for release is April 4, 2014. From director Neil Burger, DIVERGENT, a Sci-Fi drama/ adventure was released on March 21, 2014 and showcases a creative mindset into a future
www.myhometownstexas.com
world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. This film also stars Zoe Kravitz as “Christina”, Maggie Q as “Tori”, Jai Courtney as “Eric”, and Kate Winslet as “Jeanine Mathews”. Chronicling the birth of a modern American movement led by famed civil rights leader and labor organizer is the film CESAR CHAVEZ. Torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual’s ability to change the system. This is a biographical drama with incredible casting, starring Michael Pena as Cesar Chavez, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, Gabriel Mann, Jacob Vargas, and Wes Bentley. The theater release date is set for March 28, 2014.
For many, of course, this spring list wouldn’t be complete without Arnold Schwarzenegger yielding a weapon and saving mankind from another villainous predator. Well your list is now complete with the release of SABOTAGE, starring the Schwarzenegger himself in this thriller/drama/ crime/action packed movie that follows an elite DEA task force that deals with the world’s deadliest drug cartels. Specializing in complex mobile operations, the team executes a tactical raid on a cartel safe house. What looks to be a typical raid turns out to be an elaborate theft operation, pre-planned by the DEA squad. After hiding millions in stolen cash, the team believes their secret is safe-until someone begins assassinating them one by one. You can get your fill of Ah-Nold (I’LL BE BACK) Schwarzenegger ON Friday, March 28th,2014 when it’s set for theater release. FUN FACT: Did you know that many film and television projects are being produced here, not only in Texas, but right here in the DFW area? Read next month’s column to learn more and how YOU can get a foot in the door! Jimmy Sorrells

Enriching the Spirit with Canvas, Brush and Paint “Painting on location is a discovery,” remarked the talented, Dallas based artist, Olivette Hubler. She compares it to selecting a book by its cover and then experiencing a different world as the story develops the deeper you read into it. “In 2001, my husband and I bought a small trailer for travelling to places of interest. The idea was, that I would paint and he would read,” says
Olivette. Since then, they have done a lot of travelling, painting and reading, mostly within a 400 mile radius of Dallas; taking them to Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado as well as Texas. Olivette finds that certain locations follow her for years. “The intense scrutiny that comes with an extended time of observing a particular location is like taking a piece of it with you. Sometimes painting a location a second or third time after a period of incubation results in the distillation of the memory and focused reality of that place,” observed the artist.Olivette’s approach as an artist is to combine the constantly changing moments into an enduring

interpretation of nature. Olivette’s art also evolves from sketches, photos and life drawing sessions. “There is no subject more challenging than sketching or painting from life. The variations of the human body, its moods, movements and makeup are endless and I never tire of drawing from life,” says the artist. She does hundreds of sketches a year and is fascinated by studying the figure drawings of other artists because it divulges so much about their methods and thought processes. Engraving is another favorite art form of the artist and
she likens it to “drawing on steroids.” The physical act of etching and digging into copper, though new to her, is fascinating. Engraving of any kind is a slow deliberate process allowing plenty of time for the mind to wander and come up with something unexpected. “If you want to learn about
color, study pastels,” Olivette believes. Pastels are virtually pure pigment with little or no binder to hold them together so they stack up on the surface. There is no sheen to the matt ground of pigment resulting in explosive color. Olivette likes to push them into the surface forcing them to have a three dimensional quality. “Colorwise, they behave like stained glass,” the artist observes. The artist’s discovery of Bruce Klein’s blog detailing his quest for the ideal life drawing class, along with his great book suggestions, gave her the idea that others might like to hear about what, when and why she paints and draws; leading to the development of her own popular blog, “Come Along With Me”. For artists and lovers of art alike, it is an entertaining and insightful journey with Olivette on her painting expeditions both close to home and as far afield as Italy, Greece and France. Olivette Hubler’s art has graced the walls of numerous galleries and exhibition spaces around the country. She also holds workshops periodically and shares her talent and skills with those fortunate enough to attend one of them. For more information on Olivette, visit her at: www. olivettehubler.com

HAUNTED GRANBURY
Brandy Herr recently signed her book, Haunted Granbury, at the Texas Paranormal Unity Festival in Glen Rose at the Somervell County Expo Center. If you want to hear a scary encounter, you can read Brandy’s interview with Tonya Adams, resident of Hood County and account executive with the Ranch Radio and Hank FM. The book is about the small town of Granbury, established after the Civil War. It
has had time to stock its streets and historic buildings with ghastly tales and haunting stories. Legend has it that the notorious John Wilkes Booth escaped to Granbury after assassinating President Lincoln, and that his spirit now haunts the Opera House, living out his crime day after day. On Houston Street, passersby may encounter the little faceless girl who met her maker after falling from a window watching a traveling circus. In Granbury’s old jailhouse, past inmates haunt their cells and leave messages for unwitting intruders. Author Brandy Herr, delves into the history of Granbury’s most haunted locations and delivers a healthy dose of a frightening and mysterious past.

FLAMES domestic beers. The main focus of Flames is seafood, steaks and Cajun food. An outdoor patio seats approximately 20 people with an additional television as well. The restaurant will hold approximately 140 people inside. The theme is casual for family dining, but also accommodates special groups.
Two chefs create the wonderful dishes offered at Flames. One chef is from Pappadeaux’s in Fort Worth and the other from Reata in downtown Fort Worth. Flames offers honest, delicious food – without the attitude. They specialize in cooked-to-order steaks, chicken and seafood complemented by their famous soup, salad, and dessert. There is something for everyone, whether you’re a family, a couple or a group. All the items at Flames are prepared with TLC for your dining enjoyment. 1030 E Hwy 377, Suite 100 817-573-2998
Flames Seafood Grill & Bar offers simply-prepared fish, premium steaks, an impressive draft beer and wine selection and handcrafted cocktails. The atmosphere suits any occasion, with seamless service and tasty seafood dishes that truly set them apart from other steak and seafood restaurants. Flamur hoped to open a seafood restaurant and he knew that Granbury needed one. Flames opened on November 14th, 2013. The name originated with a nickname that Flamur had in high school while playing varsity basketball for the
Granbury Pirates. His team mates called him Flames, so the name of the restaurant became evident to him. Flames is not your typical restaurant. There are nine flat screen TV’s for viewing, and a full bar with 20 imported and
