My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine - 3

Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

It’s August and the

Dog Days of Summer are upon us! Have you ever wondered why people call this time of year the Dog Days? I’ve always just assumed that it had something to do with our four legged friends and the way they cope with heat. My mind always conjures up a dog with long droopy ears, his tongue hanging out, panting in the sun. Here in North Texas, people look a little like that too during the month of August…droopy, sweaty and miserable. But, no, the fact is that the saying

“Dog Days of Summer” actually comes from ancient times, when the night sky was lit up by stars instead of city lights and people could see constellations in the sky. Images of bears (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), the twins (Gemini), the

bull (Taurus) and, of course, dogs (Canis Major and Canis Minor) were all visible above. The brightest star in Canis Major is Sirius (the big dog) and it is so bright that the Romans believed the earth received heat from it. During the summer months (late July to August) Sirius “the dog star” rises and sets with the sun. The Ancients believed this added to the sun’s heat creating a long sultry period of hot weather. Of course, we now know the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth’s tilt but the term “dog days” has managed to survive the centuries and remains with us still.

As modern inhabitants of this planet we have devised ways to make the dog days bearable… even enjoyable! Schools are out for the summer months and area lakes, pools and water parks are open for a good dose of water therapy. Snow cone stands pop up all around town to provide sweet, cool treats. Watermelons appear at the farmer’s markets promising a crisp, cold bite of heaven to ward off the heat. Summer evenings are made for drive-ins, movie theatres, plays and live music, or dining out at a favorite restaurant with friends and family. Maybe the best dog day pastime is still a sultry summer evening watching fireflies, listening to the music of cicadas, and gazing at the star filled sky, just as our ancestors did … something else that has survived the centuries. Stay Cool Parker County,

Action Films Rule in August! Action movies are all the craze this mid-summer, and August promises to deliver some big ones. With July ending on a high (and lucrative) note with films like Hercules and Lucy, movie-goers are setting their sights on the hottest month of the year, while studios are hoping for the hottest ticket sales. The July 4th holiday weekend saw the weakest sales since the 1980’s, but quickly rebounded due to late month blockbusters. We were also graced with spring-like days in July that prompted more outdoor activities that could have also played a part in declining ticket sales. Whatever the reason, movies are once again supreme and August will see a resurgence as four highlyanticipated films , in particular, open in theatres.

Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Glenn Close is set for release Friday,

August 1st. The film features an unlikely cast of characters who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Based on the comic book published by Marvel Comics., it was first written in 1969 by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. In the comic books, the characters have crossed over into The Avengers universe, making them fit in easily with Marvel’s big screen plans to expand the superhero franchise. Chris Pratt will play Peter Quill / Star-Lord, who is “the Guardians” leader, who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. Zoe Saldana will play skilled assassin Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. Get On Up, The James Brown Story, is also set for August 1st release date. A drama, starring Chadwick Boseman and directed by Tate Taylor, already has critical acclaim attached to the film and is drawing early accolades by film critics. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of James Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Famed film producer Brian Grazer has been trying to make a film about Brown for more than a decade. August will see a throwback reboot with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The reboot story centers on the turtle crime fighters, which include Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, as well as their master Splinter. It is rumored to involve the return of Shredder. Star Megan Fox will help appeal to a newer audience of the Turtles as well as nudge former fans back

before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables, but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and recruits newer, younger members of the team; pinning old-school style versus hightech expertise in what is the Expendable’s most personal story yet.

into the theatres. The Expendables 3, opening Friday, August 15th will be a huge summer draw for action fans starring some of the genre’s most notable actors. Continuing with the franchise, The Expendables 3 is about the Expendables needing to save the President of the United States. While on their mission, they clash with several younger, technology oriented action heroes. In The Expendables 3, Barney (Sylvester Stallone), Christmas (Jason Statham), and the rest of the team comes face to face with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone Barney was forced to kill … or so he thought. Stonebanks, who had eluded death once

August promises to also bring a few comedies, such as Let’s Be Cops, What If, and Behaving Badly. The Hundred-Foot Journey and The Giver will also be dramas worth watching this late summer. However, action films will rule the month and fill the seats in theatres nationwide. Proudly serving all of Hood county, Show Biz 6 in Granbury is the perfect and convenient location to see your next film. Featuring all of the latest blockbusters and your favorite movies, Show Biz 6 sets the stage for your enjoyment of refreshments, candies, drinks, fresh popcorn, and always a large comfy chair in a cool, darkened theatre. See you at the movies!! FUN FACT: Did you know that Sylvester Stallone has some huge Texas fans who paid close to $450 for a photo with their favorite actor? Would you pay money to have a picture made with a celebrity and if so, how much would you be willing to drop for it? Jimmy Sorrells

"Life is a Journey" - Tribute painting to Wendy’s father. On the right hand side are messages that her Dad wrote to her, as he progressed further and further into his disease. PHOTOS BY WYATT NANTZ

Memories in the Making Wendy Young knows about Alzheimer’s disease first hand. Her father was diagnosed with the disease and Wendy retired after almost 30 years at Cooks Children’s Hospital as a CRNA to help care for him. Although her father’s Alzheimer’s had progressed too far by the time Wendy discovered MIM, she was so taken with the idea and how it could help people with this terrible disease that she got involved in the program anyway. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and ultimately fatal disease that destroys brain cells, causing memory loss and problems with thinking and behavior severe enough to disrupt daily life. As memory loss progresses, people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia can no longer do the things they once loved doing. Memories in the Making, the Alzheimer’s Association art program,is founded on the

premise that creative activity is essential for the health of the human spirit. Bypassing the need for learning, planning and knowing, MIM restores a means for creative selfexpression to people who have lost other avenues. Watercolor is vibrant, intuitive, and yields pleasing results with the slightest physical effort. People who have never painted before are able, with some assistance, to create personally satisfying images. Trained facilitators don’t attempt to teach painting technique, but rather meet artists at their own level and encourage them to make the kinds of marks that come naturally to them. “If it is paint on paper, it is a painting,” is the programs mantra. For some with memory loss, painting is a means of telling stories or making pictures of things they like and remember.

Others enjoy the craft involved in painting something and take pride in their finished work. Still others enjoy the sensation of seeing the shapes, lines and colors flow from the brush. For all, it is a pleasurable and engaging activity, regardless of the end result, and thereinlies the value of Memories in the Making. Wendy Young’s natural interest in art and her need to give back to those that helped her father led her to volunteer at MIM. She says, “Those few moments of joy that you might give someone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease make it worth it.” To find out more about Memories in the Making contact: Lisa Buck Memories in the Making Coordinator Alzheimer’s Association – North Central Texas Chapter 2630 West Freeway, Suite 100 Fort Worth, TX 76133 24/7 Helpline- 800-272-3900 www.myhometownstexas.com

DID YOU KNOW? THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE is Weatherford’s ONLY regularly scheduled live theatre venue. It currently produces 8 plays a season that normally run for three weekends each and that include both a children’s show and a Christmas production. Each season begins in January and ends in December. DID YOU KNOW? THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE has produced some of the most popular and entertaining plays in America, including plays by premier playwrights like Neil Simon and Agatha Christie as well as popular contemporary playwrights like Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard of Tuna fame and the team Jones Hope Wooten. Several playwrights have visited the theatre, including Jones Hope Wooten who attended the theatre’s production of their play The Red Velvet Cake War which was the Southwest Premier of the show. DID YOU KNOW? THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE is a nonprofit organization, which relies on volunteers to continue to produce shows each season; it is a 100% volunteer organization.

The volunteers are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Weatherford through the art of live theatre. They do everything from performing to building sets and cleaning the restrooms. It takes an incredible amount of time to put on each production and to run the infrastructure of the organization year round. DID YOU KNOW? THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE holds a drawing at every performance of every show called the Red Bowl. Patrons fill-out information on a slip of paper and place it in a large red bowl from which they draw a name during intermission to give away two free tickets to the next show. DID YOU KNOW? THEATRE Off THE SQUARE’S children’s show this summer was produced in conjunction with our second annual Summer Children’s Theatre Camp. The camp was a huge success! The 30 plus children from Azle, Weatherford, Millsap, Hudson Oaks, Poolville, and Graham ranged in age from 3rd grade to 9th grade. The theatre offered them a unique camp experience with classes pertaining to all aspects of theatre as well as the opportunity to experience the joys of performing live theatre. The campers as

well as volunteers from the Weatherford High School, Tarleton State University, Midwestern State University, and Texas State University theatre departments put together a production in two weeks. The campers then performed six performances of MISS NELSON IS MISSING (And Other Stories) over the period of two weekends. Theatre Off The Square has great plans for continuing this educational venture next summer. DID YOU KNOW? recorded for Pappy Daily’s D Records. In 1960, he had his first Top Ten hit with “Family Bible.” The following year he scored

August 23rd Claude Gray and Lisa Layne! CLAUDE GRAY Singer/songwriter/guitarist Claude Gray stood 6’5” and was frequently called “the Tall Texan.” During his nearly 30 years in music, he scored numerous hits, and was considered a major country star. He began his career in high school, performing in his native Henderson, Texas. Following Navy service from 1950-1954, he spent the bulk of the decade working as a salesman. He made his recording debut in 1959 after working as a radio announcer in Kilgore, Texas and as a DJ in Meridian, Mississippi; his first single, “I’m Not Supposed,” was

with “I’ll Just Have a Cup of Coffee (Then I’ll Go),” which made the country Top Five and was a minor hit on the pop charts. His next single, “My Ears Should Burn (When Fools Are Talked About),” made it to the Top Three. Over the next two years, Gray made it to the charts four more times, but none of the songs, including “Daddy Stopped In,” made it past the Top 20. He and Walt Breeland caused a minor controversy

when they penned “The Ballad of Jimmy Hoffa,” which their label, Mercury, wouldn’t let them record. The song eventually came out on Smokey Stover’s Ol’ Podner label and was sold directly to the Teamsters. Gray’s singles began to appear steadily on the charts from the mid-’60s through the early ‘70s; most of these were medium-level hits, but songs such as “I Never Had the One I Wanted” and “How Fast Them Trucks Can Go” occasionally rose to the Top 20. Gray’s contract with Mercury ended in 1972, and he moved to Million Records and had a minor hit, “Woman Ease My Mind,” in 1973. He appeared on the charts only sporadically after that, scoring a final hit in 1986 with his version of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band will be backing up both Claude Gray and Lisa Layne on all of their songs. Dale Morris, Jr. on fiddle and Mitchell Smithey on steel guitar along with Christian Hutton on lead guitar, Roger Ramsey on bass and Josh Rodgers on drums. LISA LAYNE is a voice for the ages. She is the singer of one of the world’s most loved Christmas songs “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU”. Today it is recognized as the # 7 Christmas song of ALL Time. Born in Tyler, Texas, at the age of three her folks moved to

Dallas where she began singing professionally at the tender age of four. She worked shows with her Dad, who is a professional musician, on and off thru her school years.

Lisa formed her first band just after high school. She was the lead vocalist and played Bass Guitar. This ultimately let to her being noticed by a local band, Vince Vance and The Valiants, which had had a taste of some major success. Lisa worked the road with them for 5 years. During that time they recorded the Christmas Smash “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU”. Lisa was the singer on that record. With the success of “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU” Lisa moved to Nashville. In Nashville she joined a very successful Beach Music Band and toured with them until 1995. In early ‘95 Lisa won the role of Patsy Cline in the first National Tour of a “Closer Walk With Patsy Cline”. She toured with that troupe for the better part of 2 years before joining the Nashville Troupe as the lead in the same show. She performed at the Texas Troubadour Theater in Nashville doing the Patsy show from ‘98 thru 2000. When it comes to singing a Patsy Cline song, NOBODY can touch LISA LAYNE. She has the gift. If you close your eyes and listen you can feel Patsy’s presence as Lisa sings. It is an awesome experience. Lisa has been in the studio the last couple of months working on her new Christmas CD entitled “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU” (Yes, by popular demand, she has re-recorded it!) This is one of those albums that only happens once in a lifetime and EVERYBODY “HAS” to have it. The variety of her selections runs the musical gamut. From Pop to Country to Blues to Rock’n’Roll to Novelty to Gospel. You name it, it’s all here as only LISA LAYNE can do it. Also of note, THE WORLD FAMOUS JORDANAIRES accompany Lisa on all 12 songs Watch this space in September for all the details on upcoming shows or check out our ad on the inside back cover. www.texasoprytheater.com 817-341-1000

Patsy Hooks Dog Park officially opens! When the City of Weatherford began looking at a capital improvement plan for the downtown and Heritage Park areas of the city, the idea for a dog park was met with great enthusiasm from the community. Earlier this year ground was broken for the park, located behind the Police Department in Weatherford, and the next stage of the Heritage Park development was completed with the ribbon-cutting and opening of the Patsy Hooks Dog Park in July. Patsy Hooks, wife of Weatherford Mayor Dennis Hooks, passed away in December, 2013. Her lifelong love of dogs and her commitment to the City of Weatherford and its citizens prompted the City Council, at a recent meeting in June, to unanimously vote to name the park in honor of Patsy. Almost every story told about Patsy over the years included dogs. Her son, Kip Hooks, said his mother would often

[

refer to them as her “babies”. But love of dogs wasn’t the only factor in the City Council’s decision to name the park for Patsy. She was instrumental in transforming the dog pound into an animal shelter that has been a source of pride for the community. Patsy spent a good deal of time, money and effort in raising awareness among the citizens of Weatherford so this tribute is the ideal way to honor her. “It’s a great tribute to a great lady,” said Kip. The ribbon cutting was attended by many Weatherford residents who brought along their dogs to try out the new digs. The park has a shaded play pen for smaller or shy dogs, a pen for large dogs, waste stations, watering stations and benches. Each pen is landscaped and even includes a fire hydrant. Donations from area residents helped fund the added improvements. The Patsy Hooks Dog Park is open from sun-up to sundown every day except Wednesdays when the City does maintenance. - August 21st - Reservations Required

Everyone has an emotional home - the place where your oldest, happiest and most poignant memories reside, the place that comes to mind first when someone asks about your roots. For J.T. Arbogast, actor-writer-producer, that place is a small picturesque town in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. He journeyed back through time to his “home” to film “Angel’s Perch,” the poignant story of one family’s struggles with Alzheimer’s disease. To help raise awareness about the 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, the Alzheimer’s Association will present a free screening of “Angel’s Perch” at City Lights Weatherford on Thursday, August 21 at 6:00 pm. The event is open to the public, but reservations are required.

“When someone develops Alzheimer’s disease, the whole family needs to become involved,” says Linda Snow, whose mother passed away with the disease. “It helps to have a place to go to learn about Alzheimer’s, get advice on caregiving and resources, and feel supported. That’s why I turned to the Alzheimer’s Association when I was caring for my mother.” Linda and her husband, Gary, are serving as honorary chairs for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 27 at Weatherford College. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the major annual fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association nationwide. It was Linda’s idea to show “Angel’s Perch,” as a way to convey the needs of families dealing with the disease. “Angel’s Perch” is the story of a successful young architect living in Pittsburg when he learns that he needs to take time off and return to his tiny hometown of Cass, West Virginia to help take care of his grandmother who was found wandering around lost, just outside her home. Arbogast says the story is fiction, but it was inspired by his own grandmother, and sometimes it was difficult to separate truth from fiction. Ultimately “Angel’s Perch” is a true story of more than five million people living with Alzheimer’s disease in this country. Please join Linda and Gary Snow and staff from the Alzheimer’s Association for this free screening of “Angel’s Perch.” Brief remarks will be made by Linda and Gary and information provided about supporting the local Walk to End Alzheimer’s. “It’s hard to find someone who has not been touched by Alzheimer’s disease in some way,” according to Linda. “The story told through this film speaks to the importance of supporting the local work and national research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Participating in the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Weatherford is a great way to support the cause.” City Lights Weatherford is donating its facilities for this special viewing of “Angel’s Perch.” A light dinner provided by Schlotzsky’s will be served. Seating is limited. Reservations to attend may be made by calling the Alzheimer’s Association at (817) 336-4949 or 1-800-272-3900. Information about Walk to End Alzheimer’s can be found at www.alz.org/ northcentraltexas.

Agape Coffee House, owned by Lori Clifton, was the go to place in Aledo for great coffee and icy drinks for over a decade. The space was also occupied by a gift shop owned by Judy Wallace and featuring a variety of fabulous gifts, cards and decorative items. When Clifton decided to sell the shop, Wallace chose to purchase it and quickly changed the name to Holy Grounds Coffee and Gifts. Located in the same space and Street in Aledo, Holy Grounds serves up some of the same wonderful coffees, such as Cowboy Blend and Cream Royale, but they have also brought back many old favorites, like tropical tea and fruit chillers. Judy has also expanded open hours to 6a.m. - 8p.m., Monday through Saturday. All in all, four businesses now share the space; the Garden of Eat’n, a boutique, the gift shop and the coffee shop. Judy, her husband Ken and their three sons, Ken, Alex and Bryan have lived in the Aledo area since 2003. Her husband is a retired Navy fighter pilot and former chairman of the Aerospace Engineering Dept. at the U.S. Naval Academy, now working as an engineer at Coherent

Technical Services. Judy was a court reporter in California and in Washington, D.C. before moving to Aledo and becoming a full-time mom. The Wallace’s oldest son, Ken, graduated from Aledo High School in 2009 and attended the University of Texas at Arlington where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He married Marissa Steen, also an AHS graduate, this July. Alex graduated from Aledo in 2012 and is currently in the U.S. Marines and Bryan is a senior at AHS.

This July, Judy began holding family movie nights on Saturdays in the parking lot of Holy Grounds. Admission is Free and they offer half price featured drinks. Movies start at 8:30 and the August line-up includes: The Amazing Spider Man, August

Sweet Springs Winery – A Small Gift Sparks A New Beginning When Cindy Mittelstedt gave her husband Ronnie a beginners wine making kit one Christmas morning years ago, she never could have imagined the journey that her simple gift would begin. The enjoyment they got from using the kit ingredients and producing a bottle of wine paired with Ronnie’s love of cultivating gardens and Cindy’s skill in pairing wines with food led them to pursue another venture and forgo a

typical retirement. With his wife Cindy in mind, Ronnie planted one acre of land with Norton grapes, called Cynthiana. Over the next four years the Mittelstedt’s continued to add to their crop and began making their own wine, which they shared with family and

friends. When they decided to take their skills to the next level, they got in touch with Gene Estes, of Lost Oak Winery in Burleson, who mentored them through the various phases of wine making. With Cindy and Ronnie’s skills in winemaking and their daughter Beth’s expertise in sales and marketing, as VP of SkyRider Inc., the Mittelstedt’s successful construction contracting service, the family was ready to pursue their dream of opening a winery. In July of this year, the couple officially opened the doors of Sweet Springs Winery. Located just one and a half blocks from the historic downtown square in Weatherford, the winery and tasting room is a dream come true for the Mittelstedts. A beautiful, impressive, stone wall with cedar gate entrance surrounds the outdoor patio and blocks the noise from the busy main street just steps away. Once inside the gate, the world outside slips

away and you are transported to what feels like a spot in Tuscany. The large enclosed outdoor patio is peppered with umbrella covered tables and chairs with a few rocking chairs and small tables around the perimeter of the space. Overhead, strings of white lights provide a festive atmosphere in the evenings and a stage is set up at one end to accommodate the live music nights that the winery offers each week. The tasting room, run by Kim Hernandez, is adjacent to the patio and the décor is a mixture of rustic Tuscan and chic Texan dominated by a very unique bar that’s topped entirely with pennies! Inside, dining and wine tasting is available in the adjoining dining room and shares the unique ambiance and comfortable quality of the patio space.

The Mittelstedts feature wines from Sweet Springs and Lost Oak Wineries. Wine is paired with a variety of cheese from Eagle Mountain Cheeses in Granbury, as well as a selection of artisan breads and crackers. The cheese trays at Sweet Springs are as lovely to look at as they are delicious to eat! A selection of tasty cheeses, artisan crackers, pickles, olives, grapes and sweet, dried cranberries were a perfect compliment to a generous glass of Cabernet on a recent visit to the winery. Acoustic music is provided on the patio area on many evenings. Saturday, August 2nd, Debra James, mother of American Idol contestant Casey James, takes the stage from 7 to 9p.m. Her bluesfolk-rock style has garnered

her many fans over the years and her CD, Cross That Line, is haunting and beautiful. Cindy and Ronnie invite everyone to come out Saturday night, have a glass of wine, and listen to this amazing artist. Never ones to rest on their laurels, the Mittelstedts have plans, over the next eighteen months, to open a wedding venue on their property and, in keeping with Ronnie’s German heritage, a brewhouse off Hwy. 51. But for now they say, “We just want to make wine for people to be able to sit down and enjoy with friends in a comfortable atmosphere.” I would say, they have accomplished just that! Sweet Springs Winery 215 N. Main Street Weatherford, TX 76086 817-594-3333 Hours: Tuesday thru Thursday 11a.m. to 8p.m. Friday and Saturday 11a.m. to 10p.m. Sunday 12p.m. to 7p.m. Closed Monday
