Can you believe the estimated number of collector cars in the U.S. is roughly 5 million! And, 58% of those are owned by baby boomers ( those born from 1946 through 1964). That includes me and Jay Leno. There are always carrelated events going on in the Hood/Somervell areas. Granbury High School Auto Tech Club hosted a car show last month. Wranglers on Acton Highway will host a customer appreciation classic car show on June 7th. And, Granbury’s 4th of July celebration is kicked off with D&D Rockin’ Rods Classic car show on July 3rd at Mike Brown Hyundai. If you like dirt track racing, you can find lots of action at the 281 speedway in Stephenville that has races now through September. Of course, Texas Motor Speedway’s Indy race is June 6th ”under the lights”. Speaking of racing, my wife and I went to a luncheon at Joe T. Garcia’s in Fort Worth to honor Ryan Hunter-Reay, 2014 Indy 500 winner. Ryan spoke of his Texas roots and how he hoped to win the upcoming Firestone 600 race at Texas Motorspeedway. He said he really wanted to fire those pistols that the winner gets to do when they win. So, Eddie Gossage handed him a pistol and let him fire it! A

Okay, so we all know by now that Marvel’s X-Men franchise is a huge hit among movie-goers. What we might not have expected, however, is that X-Men: Days of Future Past would have taken the holiday weekend’s top spot with an estimated $111 million dollar opening! That’s sure to put smiles on the faces of the star-studded franchise, and inevitably bring us more mutant, action-packed thrillers from the film series. This super-hero film, based on the fictional X-Men characters appearing in Marvel Comics was directed by Bryan Singer. In the film, the X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants. I was lucky enough to work as a crew member of X-Men: First Class back in 2010, and I can attest to the ingenious talent, both on screen and off, that accounts for the huge success this franchise is seeing. While X-Men was taking top honors this weekend, there were a few other films holding their own. “Blended”, a romantic comedy once again starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore did quite well, nearing the 20 million mark. After a bad blind date, a man and

woman find themselves stuck at the same resort for families, where their attraction grows as their respective kids benefit from the burgeoning relationship. This film has been portrayed by the media and reviewers as two-fold. There is the dismayed stating it’s just another SandlerBarrymore rehash of everything else they’ve done together. Others believe the film is quite humorous with a different and relevant storyline, and holds up very well on its own. (This movie-goer has yet to have a personal opinion until I see it first hand, though it’s hard not to enjoy the comedic pairing in previous work) I do, however, predict incredibly high DVD rentals. I am now extremely pleased to announce that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have finally married! With any luck, we won’t have to hear about them on a daily, consistent basis. (Until the divorce of the century takes place? Okay, okay. Shame on me! Bad writer!) We have been barraged and forced for months on end to endure speculation after speculation regarding the when, where, and how of the couple’s nuptials. Turns out Florence was the place, Memorial Day weekend was the time, and not-so-low-key was the how! With a reported price tag of astronomical figures, the couple spared no expense in showing the world how a “classy” pair gets hitched. Among reported huge gasps from the audience, the bride, speculatively, wore white. If Kim and Kanye aren’t your speed, there’s always the nowinfamous Solange Knowles and Jay-Z elevator fight to feed your appetite. Yet another scandalous event coming straight from the top of the hip-hop world of entertainment. Sources close to the superstar say the fight,

www.myhometownstexas.com

which was supposed to have stayed unseen to the public, was over Jay-Z flirting with another woman prior to the event. Solange, always the fervent supporter of older sis Beyonce, was reportedly furious when Jay-Z didn’t even deny it to her. Once the videotape was leaked to the public, Beyonce herself added fuel to the fire by posting random tweets about choices and people you surround yourself with, while never speaking directly about the encounter. In fact, none of the parties have yet to speak about the occurrence. However, all three have now surfaced together, taking selfies and posing for photographs at various functions. As Beyonce has said, the family is making a very strong united front and that everyone is intact. What say you? An interesting piece of hot gossip and just gotta know all the details? … or a private family affair that should never have been leaked to the public? “Perhaps both”, Jim Dunlap said. “People obviously want to know what the heated fight was about, now that it’s been made public. But people are also very respectful of Beyonce, knowing how close she is to her sister.” I’d have to agree with Jim here.

In a twist of things to come down the road, Johnny Depp is in talks with Lionsgate/Summit to star as famed magician Harry Houdini in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. Dean Perisot is set to direct the film. The story recasts Houdini as not just a master escape artist but an investigator of the world of the occult. Based on Larry Sloman’s book of the same name. Depp is coming off of two disappointments with Transcendence and The Lone Ranger. However, he is set to revisit two blockbuster franchises with Pirates of the Carribean 5, and a sequence to Alice in Wonderland, both Disney films. Lionsgate is eyeing a November 2014 start date which would push Pirates’ production to early 2015. Alice 2, which is known as Through The Looking Glass, will shoot next, after he finishes the Whitey Bulger crime drama Black Mass. FUN FACT: Did you know that a 505 million- year- old fossil has been named after Johnny Depp, due to its resemblance to the character Edward Scissorhands. Jimmy Sorrells

Art the attack on the twin towers. Realizing that her life could have ended as easily as it did for so many people that day, she decided there and then that she would go back to pursuing her dream of creating art. Cynthia’s parents had moved to Granbury in the 1970’s and the artist loved the shops on the square, filled with pottery and handmade gifts, that she would browse through each time she visited. Almost immediately after returning from Australia, Cynthia contacted Jim Patterson at the Jeweler’s Workshop in Granbury and asked for a job. There she honed her skills in jewelry making for the next nine years and began a new career as an artist.

Cynthia James – Local Artist with an Eye for Color! Granbury artist and businesswoman, Cynthia James, is living what she calls “a dream come true” at her shop, Artefactz, on Granbury’s historic downtown square. The talented contemporary sculptor and jewelry maker works primarily with glass, metals and clay to produce one-of-akind pieces that have tempted collectors throughout the United States and as far away as Japan, Australia and Europe for many years. Born into a family with both talent and a love of the arts, Cynthia was encouraged from childhood to develop her skills. During her teens, the artist lived with her family in England where she often visited

museums and cathedrals and soaked in the beautiful plays of light and color on the angles and curves of sculptures housed within their walls. After graduating from the University of Central Arkansas with a BA in Art Education, Cynthia began pursuing painting and pottery but also began a job with a newspaper which she held for twenty years. Although the stable job with the newspaper gave her security, creating art remained her true passion.

just as excited about this medium as I was twelve years ago,” says the talented artist. And, now that Cynthia has acquired a building behind her shop that she can convert into a studio, we can expect a lot more of her beautiful work in the future. “One of the aspects of being an artist and having a business in Granbury is that it gives the local people a place to bring their friends and show off the square. I’m so very happy to be included as an artist in this wonderful community and very thankful for all the people who have supported me throughout the years,” Cynthia is quick to add. Her ability to make a living with her passion became

These days, Cynthia works with dichroic (meaning, many color) glass, creating large, multi-media sculptures, smaller wall pieces and three-dimensional works. Although she still loves making jewelry the larger sculptures really bring out the artist in her. Dichroic fused glass coatings transmit wavelengths of light while reflecting others which creates an effect similar to the iridescence of a butterfly’s wing. This material has given Cynthia endless ideas and design possibilities, since her sculptures change color with different lighting or the time of day. “I am

A trip to Australia in 2001 provided a “light bulb” moment for Cynthia. It was September 11th and she was on a plane headed back to the States when she learned of

In the market for a custom built hot rod? Head on out

towards Stephenville on 377 until you come to a blue building… that’s the home of Creative Custom Concepts. Tyler Pool’s remarkable talent for taking pieces of rusty metal and turning them into fancy hot rods has brought him customers from as far away as Australia. “It doesn’t seem like work at all,” says Tyler when asked about his obvious love for reconstructing seemingly mismatched, rusty looking car parts into beautiful custom street machines. Tyler’s passion for hot rods began at an early age. His father, Gary Pool, is also a master at hot rod reconstruction and likes to tell the story of when he first discovered that Tyler might follow in his footsteps. “Just as I finished building a hot rod for a customer, two year old Tyler crawled out from underneath the car with hammer in hand and began banging on the side of the vehicle,” says Gary. Instead of getting upset, Gary took it as a sign that his son was interested in what he did and ever since they have worked together in the business. Although Tyler comes from a large family with three brothers, three stepbrothers and two sisters, he was the only one who shared his father’s passion. These days, Gary doesn’t get his hands dirty as much but he continues to help Tyler when he needs to. Gary is helping his son with the newly opened automotive shop by teaching him the tools of the trade when it comes to starting a business. Most of the business Creative Custom Concepts generates is through the internet, although Tyler does have local customers also. The Pools can put two halves of a vehicle together, build a new frame, put new floorboards in cars, replace all the rusty parts, and much more and do it all with a big smile. Their passion for hot rods is contagious. Our cover photo for this month’s issue features Gary and Tyler Pool and their hot rod. If you would like to talk with Tyler Pool about building or restoring your hot rod give him a call at 682-228-0944. Visit them on facebook at: www.facebook.com/creative.custom.concepts3c

Music/Nightlife chip scott - timing is everything!

Come out to Doc Possum’s BBQ and Burgers any Thursday and don’t miss out on some of the best Country music in the area, remember…timing is everything!

“Timing is everything in the music business,” says Granbury guitarist Chip Scott. You can see why he would think that when he tells the story of meeting Doug Fussell, who was the Who’s Who in Texas country music not all that long ago. Chip says he was playing at various clubs in the area and quite often would look out in the audience and see a man with big black rimmed glasses that he dubbed Mr. Magoo, due to his resemblance to the myopic cartoon character. One night, Mr. Magoo came up to him and said, “You’re going to the stockyards this weekend!” Much to Chip’s surprise, Mr. Magoo was none other than Doug Fussell, the owner of Club Overtime in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Only accomplished musicians such as Matt Wayne, Martin Dale, and Cal Bennett played at Club Overtime. Although Doug Fussell died just as Chip was beginning his climb in the business, Doug’s encouragement and support made an impact on Chip’s life and the path of his music career. Chip’s parents moved to Granbury when he was five years old. That Christmas Chip’s brother received a guitar and, like a lot of us, gave up playing after a while. Chip took that opportunity to pick up the discarded gift and learn to play himself. His brother decided the fiddle was more his style and the two played music together

Now Chip plays every Thursday night at Doc Possum’s BBQ and Burgers where he holds jam sessions and artists from all over the area come to entertain. “You never know who’s going to show up,” says Chip. Some of the regulars are Erica Perry, Logan Gray, Michael Padgett, Mike Stanley and Phil Hamilton. One night, Courtney Patton came by to enjoy some good Country music. Chip’s band “The Free Roaming Chickens” composed of Chip, Terry Barrington, Tony Valadez, Tracy Neff and Doug Rose also play at Doc Possum’s on Thursdays.

Scott stopped playing in a band for a short time during his first marriage and then picked it up again after his divorce when he played with Texas Country Band and country greats like Pat Green and Ray Wylie Hubbard. After years in the music industry, Chip says he, “got fed up with the attitudes and decided to get a regular job.” He worked for twelve years and during those years he left the guitar on a shelf so to speak. In 2004 he married his wife, Sharon, and life went on. It wasn’t until 2009 that he told his wife that he was a guitar player…and that he wanted to get back in music and start a band! Chip says he doesn’t think Sharon realized what that meant but sweetly said “whatever you want to do honey, that will be fine.” In fact, when Chip put a band together in the space of about six weeks and began playing, Sharon’s comment was, “I didn’t know you could really play!”

throughout their school days. A weathered house on Chip’s parent’s property that they called “the old house” was used by musicians from the area as a place to jam. Chip got to play with accomplished musicians, such as the fiddle player for Ray Price, Dale Norris Jr., and honed his skills from an early age.
