Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

On

July 2, 1776, that liberty-loving patriot John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail, imagining how future Americans might celebrate their independence each Fourth of July. “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable event, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.” First, Adams wrote, “It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.” To observe the anniversary, he advised “Pomp and Parade, with Shows, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one

End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” America’s second president would be proud to see that his dreams have come true. We can imagine John Adams, in fact, taking in the Independence Day celebration right here in Hood and Somervell County with the illuminations of which he spoke about. There will be many opportunities to celebrate the Fourth of July locally. Somervell County kicks off with their amazing fireworks display on July 3 at the Wheeler Branch Reservoir. It will be a tailgating party with food available for purchase. Then on July 4, Granbury, ranked one of the top 10

fireworks shows in the southwestern United States, has their “illuminations” at 9:45 over the lake. Both Glen Rose and Granbury parades “float” through town on the morning of July 4 – 9 am in Glen Rose and 10 am in Granbury. More events are listed on the calendar page and page 10. We hope Americans everywhere will take their cue from John Adams and celebrate this Fourth of July in the most festive of ways. And while you are at it, think seriously about the mortal risks that Adams and his fellow Founders were willing to take for you to enjoy this day. It will bring perspective to the constant threats to our liberty that arise more and more often.

Celebrate, but stand ready like the Founders to preserve this country where, despite its ups and downs, freedom continues to be alive. Make your July 4th weekend a memorable one. Use common sense, caution and do nothing that may cause regret and harm others humans and wildlife alike. We are so thankful for the rains, and hope there will be plenty more – just more slowly would be better! Happy Fourth of July, Hood & Somervell County! Let freedom ring across our counties this and every day forevermore!

JULY HEATS UP THE BOXOFFICE As the month of June closes its door and July heats up, we are seeing record numbers turn up for events all throughout our DFW area. Film camps and creative media workshops in Fort Worth and Dallas are reporting high interest this year, as well as several music venues in North Texas. As we celebrate (and devilishly enjoy) all that is Hollywood and big boxoffice, let’s not forget to enjoy our own attractions and local grown talent. We are so lucky to have an abundance of entertainment right here at home, that offers first-rate talent and learning experiences. For instance, SMU and Dallas Film Society offer classes during the summer months for film production. This is a fantastic idea for anyone looking to get an insight into film work and get hands-on experience from professionals in the industry. Kamp Hollywood is another great experience teaching young filmmakers the ins and outs of production and is presented by The Movie Institute. Back for its 14th season, it is Dallas’s

We are just hitting our stride now as summer superheroes and funny flicks come our way. “Tammy” starring Melissa McCarthy is expected to be a sleeping hit, and even more so with expected future dvd rentals. Stemming from her popularity from films like “Bridesmaids” and her hit TV show “Mike and Molly”, McCarthy is a big pull for movie-goers and has cemented herself into the American comedy culture. “Hercules” with Dewayne “Rock” Johnson and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” are also on the short list for July to watch. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” also grossed well at the box office and again, will be a mammoth money maker in dvd sales and rentals. “Sex Tape” starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel will be in theatres July 17th, and the movie title leaves little to the imagination as to the plot of the story. Coming out July 11th is “A Long Way Down” featuring Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots. The story is of four strangers who planned to jump off the same roof on New Year’s Eve join together and become surrogate family and give themselves six weeks to

find valid reasons to live. “The Fluffy Movie” starring stand-up comic Gabriel Iglesias hits theaters July 24th and captures the comic in this never before seen footage from his sold-out “Unity Through Laughter” tour. Spanning over 23 countries, and more than 400 cities, this is the summer’s must-see big screen comedy event! June was a record-setter for one old cowboy in particular. George Strait, our native Texan country superstar, (aka: King George to his peers) rode away in the sunset breaking an attendance record at AT&T stadium with just over 104,000 people. The old record was set 33 years ago by the Rolling Stones. In total, the 62 yearold played 20 of his number one hits and ended with “This is Where the Cowboy Rides Away” (of course, right?!) from his album “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind”. George Strait was, is, and will remain a standard-bearer in the world of country music. His easy going, laid back vocal style, coupled with that familiar Texas drawl leaves no doubt who is singing the tune when one drifts across our radio stations. He has remained popular throughout an age when country music has seen so many changes to its styles and

rhythms. “King George” will be sorely missed by legions of fans. While June was a fantastic month for most artists in all genres, we have to pause and take a moment to reflect on one artist whom we’ve lost. Celebrated American author, poet, dancer, and singer Maya Angelou passed away on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86. Most notably known for her works such as “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” and “Still I Rise”, she was a child of the Jim Crow south who rose out of her surroundings and impoverished life with her works of literary art. In her early years, she was a singer and dancer of calypso music. As her adulthood blossomed, Angelou would go on to write seven autobiographies chronicling her life and personal triumphs, three books of essays, and several books of poetry. Her landmark book of 1969 “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was a lyrical account of her childhood and was among the first autobiographies by a 20th century black woman to reach a wide, general readership. She delivered her inaugural poem “On The Pulse Of The Morning” at the swearing in of Bill Clinton, and President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Jimmy Sorrells

Art professors, he was thinking of this decision on his way back to Texas. He was thinking about something his father-in-law had said several years before. His father-in-law’s advice was that you should do what you feel passionate in doing and then make money doing it. Randy believes he got it backwards the first time, and decided to start making amends. On his way back to Fort Worth he got on his cell phone and started firing all of his customers!

andy Meador is a selftaught and successful creative western watercolorist that is starting to attract attention and accolades from around the country. While meeting at Paradise Bistro & Coffee Co. on the square in Granbury, I was able to truly connect with Randy and learn of his story, in spite of the very noisy and very busy downtown area.

speaker, Randy graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Feeling like he was wasting most of his adult life in that career, Randy decided that he needed to do something drastic and very different about his career. He said that while on a trip in which he went to Norman, Oklahoma to visit his daughter and her

All of a sudden, Randy Meador had the urge to create. He is at his happiest when he has a blank sheet of paper, canvas or a microphone so that he can create something. He decided to be a watercolorist after reading the former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill’s, biography in 1991. Churchill said “When I paint, nothing else exists.” Randy knew he wanted to go to that place regularly. He has since studied the techniques of some of the greatest artists of this day and now is truly humbled to have his own art displayed beside their art. Randy’s art can be acquired at Your Private Collection Art Gallery in Granbury. Other accolades given to Meador were when he won best of show at the Texas Watercolor Society and was named one of the best watercolorists in the country in

2013. We are truly grateful to have such a talented and recognized artist right here in our community.

I asked Meador how he picks out the subjects that he wishes to paint and he replied by saying that he only picks out subjects that interest him. He will only use a black and white picture to do his pencil drawings on paper. He said that he does not use a color picture because he wants his mind free to interpret the colors that he uses. As I was winding up the interview with Randy, he told me that two years ago he got a cancer growth on his back. “You know, one of those that you normally have from six months to five years to live,” he said. He took a large step back

and started thinking what is really most important to him in his life. He decided that it was time, and not things. He went to his closet and took out all the expensive clothes and boots that he was not using and got rid of them. Then he did that with everything that he owned. He said that he felt he wanted to get rid of these items, so that family members wouldn’t have to do it after he had passed. While he was removing the items and letting them pile up

Randy underwent surgery that removed all the tissue infected with cancer. Afterwards, he found out that he was not going to be able to paint or even throw a ball without extensive rehabilitation. But he says, “I have time now to learn these things over again. I’m fortunate that they could find all the cancer and were able to remove it.” Now, he wasn’t looking for sympathy in telling me this story, in fact, he feels like he doesn’t even deserve to be called a cancer survivor. However, what cancer has given to Randy is a whole new outlook on life and to be able to communicate that life lesson with his art. And through Randy Meador’s art and his positive outlook on life, we are all the better for it. Look for Randy Meador’s work at Your Private Collection Art Gallery, 106 W. rom time to time, a piece of theatre comes along which is important. Only on rare occasion does it depict a true event, featuring an accurate portrayal of historical characters. Such is the beauty of 1776. Not only does it depict real historical figures, but also the single most important moment in the history of the United States of America and it does so with wit as well as wisdom.

are certain unalienable rights that governments should never violate. These rights include the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As Benjamin Franklin said, “this paper is our passport to the gallows, for if we don’t hang together we shall most assuredly hang separately.” God bless our founding fathers and their incredible courage and God bless America!

Our Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Second Continental Congress, states the reasons the British colonies of North America sought independence during the year of 1776. It opens with a preamble describing the document’s necessity and explains why colonies have overthrown their ruler and have chosen to take their place as a separate nation in the world. All men are created equal and there

Crofton Place is located on the southwest side of Granbury.Heading south on Highway 377 going towards Tolar, 2665 West Hwy 377, Suite 104 is on the left-hand side of the road. They have antiques from the local area as old as 200 years. One unique item they have is an old bank teller cage used in the Model T era or before. I wonder if Bonnie and Clyde could have robbed that bank? Some of their antiques are so old that you would need the Antique Roadshow to appraise them. This antique store also has household items along with new and used furniture. It is the perfect place to browse and find something that you just can’t do without. 7 Crofton Place is a family-owned business with a big heart to help you find exactly what you need. They will even offer to make you something special to suit your unique situation. “A weekend of relaxation and serenity”

The

LODGING

Inn On The River is simply one of the nicest bed and breakfasts in Glen Rose, Texas. An extraordinary 22 room and group meeting facility, located in the historic district is the largest in town, and is complete with its own Texas Historical marker. In the early 1900’s, the building that is now Inn on the River was part of a unique complex known as Dr. Snyder’s Drugless Health Sanitarium or health spa. Snyder, who touted himself as a “magnetic healer,” knew people liked to be pampered. He fed them well, provided them with hot baths and comfortable rooms, and generally gave them the kind of personal attention that made them want to return time and again. Although owners Ernie and Shirley Reinke don’t claim to have the healing powers that Dr. Snyder claimed to have, they still believe that each guest should leave feeling refreshed and renewed. The meticulously restored Inn offers fine dining, personalized service, romantic getaways, all just a short drive from Dallas and Fort Worth. Glen Rose is a favorite touring destination for car and motorcycle clubs. The Inn, with its secluded parking, is a great location to host your next event. Approaching the

Inn, the first thing you notice is the yard that is beautifully manicured and tended to. Upon entering through the front door, there is an exquisite chandelier and antiques in a large room where the courteous staff greets you immediately. One can really feel peace and calmness about the Inn. As I toured the hotel and looked in most of the rooms, I could tell they were all nicely decorated with antiques and feather beds. Each room has its own bathroom, which is always particularly nice in a bed and breakfast. You can choose an upstairs suite with a room overlooking the garden, or rooms with king, queen, and full sized beds. No two rooms are alike at the Inn, all the linens are European, and perhaps most important… there are no pesky television sets in the rooms. Outside, I viewed the sparkling swimming pool, manicured lawn and shrubs, as well as a 200 year old oak tree. I then gazed out the back a few more yards and there I spotted the Paluxy River, with quietly running water. People from all over the world visit the Inn – Australia, Japan, Europe. One of the most interesting groups is The Final Touch Finishing School which returns

every year with teenagers from all over the world to have their workshops at the Inn. In each room, there is a journal where guests can write about their experience. Most guests write about the peace and tranquility, and Shirley says you can see the expression on their faces change after they’ve checked into their room.

The Inn also features meeting rooms, porches, a parlor, a dining room, and a fully staffed kitchen where I’ve been told the food is excellent. Much has changed through the years, but Dr. Snyder’s spirit still lives on. The intimate size allows for catering to the individual needs of small corporate groups or church retreats with the kind of personal service you just can’t get at larger hotels and conference centers. Attractions nearby include the Glen Rose square, walking distance to Big Rocks Park, Fossil Rim Wildlife Park, Dinosaur World, Creation Evidence Museum, and you can even drive to the Granbury square in about 15 minutes. Glen Rose is a very attractive small town nestled just outside of the DFW area, with plenty of activities to keep you and your family busy. Music/Nightlife Holly Jo left her home in April of this year and has been here for about two months. She spent one month living in Granbury, and one month in Stephenville. She has met several of the local artists which have taken her under their wings, so to speak, to help her get experience and gigs. One of the first songs that Holly Jo wrote was called “George Strait and Jesus” and it got quite a lot of attention at the local radio station 96.3 in Arizona. Holly Jo even played the song live on air and did a couple of morning show interviews. Her new song, called “Rough”, is still in the process of getting recorded. When she does finally go to Nashville, this will be on her demo and she said it’s actually her favorite song right now. Holly Jo also wrote a new song for her parents called “She Don’t Haft To Stay”, which is about the rodeo lifestyle.

H

olly Jo Samsill knew at a very early age that her life would center around country music. Originally from Arizona, Holly would ride with her mom and dad to rodeos, as her dad would play music on cassette tapes. When she was three years old she was on such a trip with her parents when they heard their daughter start to sing along with the music. Seeing her natural talent, both parents agreed that Holly would start getting professional voice lessons. From then on, wherever Holly Jo would go with her dad to a rodeo, she would always ask if she could sing the National Anthem and if there happened to be a band, she would go up on the stage and sing with them. Her musical influences growing up were George Strait, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette and the young Linda Rondstadt. Holly’s grandmother bought her a karaoke machine when she was twelve. She fondly remembers going into her grandma’s beauty shop with her karaoke machine and singing Patsy Cline songs for the customers. When she

pursuing her own singing career. Holly had a knack for making connections wherever she found a band. However, she still had to be back home at ten o’clock every night. Her parents would drive her for hours just so that she could sing a couple of songs somewhere. Her parents did everything they could to try and encourage her pursuit of music. Before long, Holly Jo played in a band called Sunset Route. It was the last band she had while still in Arizona and they played in one of the most legendary bars, The Museum Club, in Flagstaff, where

a lot of Texas country artists play. One day the band came to her with the decision to take some time off and spend it with their families. Holly Jo said she completely understood, but started making plans about coming to Texas. She said she actually loved Texas country better than she liked Nashville country, so Holly Jo started saving up money while she was bartending in Wickenburg. She talked it over with her parents, and while it was a scary decision, it was one she just had to make. When she had finally saved up enough money and told everyone in town that she was headed to Texas, they threw a large going away party where almost everyone in town showed up and gave her money for the trip.

One of Holly Jo’s favorite places to play is DOC Possum’s in Acton. She just loves the place and thinks it’s too neat, with plenty of people that go to Doc Possum’s that she likes very well. In the future, Holly Jo is going to Nashville to record a couple of songs that she expects to take about two weeks. Right now she’s like a gypsy just waiting to see which way the wind will blow her next. And that’s ok with her. She is just having fun playing Texas country music. She has an upcoming gig with Cheerful Heart Gifts Boutique grand opening in Granbury and she will be playing at Doc Possum’s in Acton, Texas. If you get a chance you will want to catch Holly Jo Samsill’s performance. I firmly believe that she is an up and coming star and at only twenty years old, she already has many years of experience and talent behind her. It’s always a difficult and exhausting time in life for new artists to get out on the road, and be heard. Let’s make sure we make Holly Jo feel welcome in Texas, and go out to support this very talented young woman. Be sure to check our calendar in My Hometowns Texas Magazine to find her upcoming schedule!

Dining

Doc

Possum’s in Acton, Texas is a wellknown and highly frequented BBQ restaurant that turns out delicious food and fun for the entire family. With live Texas country music, and a host of entertainment schedules, Doc Possum’s knows how to draw in a crowd. Pete James, the owner of Doc Possum’s, has had family ties to the land since 1868. Pete’s family migrated from South Carolina, to Alabama, to Hood County during that year. There was free land to be had in Hood County to settlers who would stay, and that is exactly what his family has done. From the early age of sixteen, Pete had the thought of going in to the bar and restaurant business. The spot where Doc Possum’s is located is the original site where his great-grandmother originally lived so it only seemed natural

to place his business there. The property had gotten out of the family for some time, and Pete and two of his sisters made sure to buy the property back twelve years ago. Pete states “This already felt like a sacred spot since it is where my family came to live.” Now a mainstay in the area, Pete can be proud of his childhood dreams coming to realization. There is a very amusing story of the kitchen chef at Doc Possum’s. Pete’s wife Molly was visiting Mexico City with a friend, when she mentioned opening up a new restaurant that would serve barbecue and hamburgers. Her friend immediately suggested Bobby, who worked at Angelos BBQ in Ft Worth, along with other restaurants, and insisted at once they make him the chef! Before long, Pete and Bobby decided to meet at Riscky’s BBQ in Benbrook. They hit it off splendidly and together have managed to create a fun, family entertainment atmosphere with a

Possum’s, don’t forget to ask Pete James what “words of wisdom” he has received from ol’ Doc Possum today!

The restaurant is decorated with the mystique of the cowboy life and culture. Kim Kemp, of Tolar, who is well known in the area, created the ambiance and decorated it perfectly for the classic cowboy drifter in all of us. Along with a covered patio area, there is a full stage outdoors complete with a dance floor for when the mood hits you just right. This spot lends itself perfectly for children to learn how to dance with their parents and friends.
