Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
We
have finally hit the 100 degree mark. I’m so glad it didn’t happen until late July, considering the last several summers it occurred so early. So, now we are in “The Dog Days of Summer”. What exactly does that mean? I’ve often wondered, so I googled it. The Romans associated the “dog days” hot weather with the star Sirius. They considered Sirius to be the “Dog Star” because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius is also the brightest star in the night sky. The ancients blamed Sirius for the heat because of its brightness. We know this isn’t true, but the saying
has carried down through the ages anyway. These temperatures certainly do not affect music. There are so many venues during August from the last two Sundays of “Crowman’s Jam” at Doc Possums, to every Saturday night’s music at Loco Coyote out between Glen Rose and Bluff Dale. Revolver Brewing continues their tours every Saturday at noon with live entertainment. On the 2nd and 16th, Big City Music Revue’s production of Singer/Songwriters of the 70’s at Granbury Live Theater is sure to move you with lots of memorable music. Then on August 15, Tarleton’s Langdon Center puts on

the Strings 4 All Seasons Concert. Please check our calendar for lots more music all over the area. From August 30 through September 1, the Warriors for Christ Biker Bash 2014 takes place on the Granbury Square and at Hewlett Park. There will be great speakers and music as well as a bike show and of course, vendors. Relax at the Hood County Library on Tuesday nights at 6:30 pm for recent movies and popcorn for free.

Action Films Rule in August! Action movies are all the craze this mid-summer, and August promises to deliver some big ones. With July ending on a high (and lucrative) note with films like Hercules and Lucy, movie-goers are setting their sights on the hottest month of the year, while studios are hoping for the hottest ticket sales. The July 4th holiday weekend saw the weakest sales since the 1980’s, but quickly rebounded due to late month blockbusters. We were also graced with spring-like days in July that prompted more outdoor activities that could have also played a part in declining ticket sales. Whatever the reason, movies are once again supreme and August will see a resurgence as four highlyanticipated films , in particular, open in theatres. Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn and starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Glenn Close is set for release Friday, August 1st. The film features an unlikely cast of characters who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions. Based on the comic book published by Marvel Comics., it was first written in 1969 by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. In the comic books, the characters have crossed over into The Avengers universe, making them fit in easily with Marvel’s big screen plans to expand the superhero franchise. Chris Pratt will play Peter Quill / Star-Lord, who is “the Guardians” leader, who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien
father. Zoe Saldana will play skilled assassin Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. Get On Up, The James Brown Story, is also set for August 1st release date. A drama, starring Chadwick Boseman and directed by Tate Taylor, already has critical acclaim attached to the film and is drawing early accolades by film critics. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of James Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Famed film producer Brian Grazer has been trying to make a film about Brown for more than a decade. August will see a throwback reboot with the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The reboot story centers on the turtle crime fighters, which include Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael, as well as their master Splinter. It is rumored to involve the return of Shredder. Star Megan Fox will help appeal to a newer audience of the Turtles as well as nudge former fans back into the theatres. The Expendables 3, opening Friday, August 15th will be a huge summer draw for action fans starring some of the genre’s most notable actors. Continuing with the franchise, The Expendables 3 is about the Expendables needing to save the President of the United States. While on their mission, they clash with several younger, technology oriented action heroes. In The Expendables 3, Barney (Sylvester Stallone), Christmas
www.myhometownstexas.com
(Jason Statham), and the rest of the team comes face to face with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone Barney was forced to kill … or so he thought. Stonebanks, who had eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables, but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and recruits newer, younger members of the team; pinning old-school style versus high-tech expertise in what is the Expendable’s most personal story yet.
August promises to also bring a few comedies, such as Let’s Be Cops, What If, and Behaving Badly. The Hundred-Foot Journey and The Giver will also be dramas worth watching this late summer. However, action films will rule the month and fill the seats in theatres nationwide. Proudly serving all of Hood county, Show Biz 6 in Granbury is the perfect and convenient location to see your next film. Featuring all of the latest blockbusters and your favorite movies, Show Biz 6 sets the stage for your enjoyment of refreshments, candies, drinks, fresh popcorn, and always a large comfy chair in a cool, darkened theatre. See you at the movies!! FUN FACT: Did you know that Sylvester Stallone has some huge Texas fans who paid close to $450 for a photo with their favorite actor? Would you pay money to have a picture made with a celebrity and if so, how much would you be willing to drop for it? Jimmy Sorrells

Kelly Graham - Sculpting a Hometown Texas Hero
S
culptor Kelly Graham and his wife Donna have called Weatherford their home for over fifteen years. Graham’s studio is located on his 100 acre ranch and has enabled him to study the animal that he captures in his sculptures up close and personal. Kelly’s life-size animal sculptures, some depicting the most famous horses in the cutting industry, are almost flawless representations of the living animal. Since many of his clients leave the horse being depicted in clay at his place for months he has the opportunity to capture their individual personalities. “Some owners know their horses characteristics as well as their own child, so as an artist, keeping the subject onsite is an important requirement to really get a good rendition,” says Graham. Not only does the artist capture anything from coyotes to dogs and horses, he also sculpts famous individuals. When he was approached by Civic
Larry Hagman at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
Development and the Hagman Memorial Committee, spearheaded by Larry Hagman’s close friend Sherry O. Watters, to capture one of Weatherford’s most famous hometown celebrities in bronze, Kelly was honored. “It’s always neat to do something like this when it’s honoring someone local. The fact that it is Larry Hagman makes it even that much more special,” said the artist. The statue will be a life-size 6’1” and mounted on a small platform which will hold the dates of his birth and death, Hagman’s signature and his family motto, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy, Feel Good” displayed at the bottom.

Larry’s signature pose, holding the lapels of his jacket and standing straight with his cowboy hat on, should remind most people of his pivotal role as television’s J.R. Ewing in the series Dallas. The finished sculpture will be installed at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford and be welcomed with an all-star gala to include many of his co-stars on the iconic TV program. Although Kelly’s life-size sculptures of horses have been the big dominator in his success his trophies are in big demand on the cutting horse circuit and he sells his tabletop size bronzes in editions of 30. “I’m always excited and curious about the next project around the corner,” says Graham, and we are excited as well to see the incredible work this talented artist will continue to produce in the future! Starring Jamie Long August 1st - 31st Fridays - Sundays Say the name Mark Twain to almost anyone and two of his most famous works come to mind: “Huckleberry Finn” and “Tom Sawyer” are still very popular and widely read. Far fewer people know that in 1898, Twain wrote a play based on one of his short stories. Twain was hopeful that Bram Stoker would stage it in his London theatre, but it never happened, and Twain just put the play away and forgot it. Fast forward to 2000, when Twain scholar Shelley Fisher found the archived play and Twain’s Foundation commissioned playwright David Ives to update it for modern audiences. Twain’s version has three acts and 35 characters, Ives adaptation has two acts and far fewer characters. The play
opened on Broadway in 2007, ran for 105 performances and was well received.

Mounted Shooters use .45 caliber single action revolvers like those used in the late 1800’s. Single action revolvers must be cocked each time before firing by drawing the hammer back.
There are 50+ possible patterns. The patterns everyone will ride can be pre-determined or can be drawn out of a hat on the day of the competition. A competition may consist of 3 to 6 patterns a day. Each pattern consists of 10 balloons. Next time they are in town it would be worth your while to go see this free admission advent. Children liked watching this sport.

Oakdale Park – Providing Memorable Moments for 89 Years and Counting! Open since 1925, Oakdale Park in Glen Rose is one of the original “motor courts” that sprung up all over America following the introduction of the Model T automobile. By 1930 the number of registered automobiles in the US had jumped from the 8,000 recorded in 1900 to an astounding 23 million! The lure of the open road had possessed us all and the demand grew for clean, safe places to stop over for the night. Entrepreneurial minded families and business owners quickly caught on to the trend and began establishing camps offering rustic, box-like cabins that afforded privacy and protection from the outdoors for the weary traveler. Most of these road side motor courts closed or were converted in the 1940’s from individual cabins to the more modern and economical to build motels. Today, Oakdale Park is one of only four motor courts that remain in existence in the United States. Operated by the City of Glen Rose, Oakdale Park continues to offer overnight accommodations along with facilities for meetings, banquets, weddings and family reunions. “The pool, built in 1925 (and recently updated) is enormous, even by today’s standards. With its size and the abundant shade around it, the pool at
Oakdale Park is one of the best places to swim in Glen Rose,” commented a recent visitor. The park contains 25 original cabins, 23 of which have been completely renovated with modern conveniences. “We tried to leave the outside of the cabins looking as original as when they were built but they are updated on the inside and furnished very nicely,” said the park manager, Kelly Harris. Most of the cabins are rented out a year in advance during the busy seasons but off season rental is sometimes available on short notice. Oakdale Park also hosts a variety of events throughout the year including a bluegrass and a dulcimer festival as well as a woodcarver’s show and classes held each November. The Holidays will find the Park ablaze with lights and decorations; even the campers taking advantage of the RV hookups decorate their vehicles and spaces in the spirit of the season! On Fridays and Saturdays, the third weekend of every month, the park hosts its Bluegrass Jam Weekend with an open mic night on Friday. That event has attracted a number of well- known musicians including Randy Elmore, who played with George Strait and Roy Thacker, known as the Fingerless Fiddler! Kelly and her staff compile a current calendar of events to keep guests apprised of all the activities going on in

the community. They even host scavenger hunts that take participants all around the historic Glen Rose square hunting for clues. Winners get T-shirts and a variety of fun items from the local merchants. Since most of the events held at the park are open to the public Kelly tries to give Somervell and Glen Rose residents a place to have summertime fun without going out of town. Local businesses have the opportunity to advertise to patrons of the park by decorating a cabin throughout the year. Contests are held and prizes given for the best decorated cabin. If all the fun activities at Oakdale Park aren’t enough to entice you to visit, consider the location. Big Rocks on the Paluxy River is across the street and a few blocks down is the Glen Rose square; just a short stroll or bike ride on the trails that run alongside the river.
In May of 2015 Oakdale Park celebrates its 90th birthday! Kelly hopes to have the new entrance sign to the park finished in time for the big event. In the future they plan to renovate the pavilions and remodel the two remaining cabins. Until then, the folks at Oakdale Park invite you to come out and see all the improvements already made to this iconic piece of American history.

L
ipan country music guitarist and singer, Giovannie Yanez, with his band Giovannie & The Good Lucks, is about to release a new five song CD by the end of this year but his journey to get where he is today started at his grandmother’s house. Confidence is a hard thing to acquire for most people and Giovannie was no exception. Although he practiced playing he was discouraged because he felt he couldn’t do any “fancy stuff” with the guitar that he heard professional musicians doing.
Singing might be better, he thought, because it seemed easier…but singing without accompaniment… not so great. Giovannie continued to practice both guitar and singing but could never shake the feeling
that he just wasn’t that good. One day he agreed to play and sing for his grandmother and her enthusiastic response gave him the confidence to continue working at his craft. Soon, he was taking the guitar to school and playing during lunch for his fellow students. The crowds began to get bigger and bigger each time he performed and he finally gained the confidence he needed to take his music out into the world. Giovannie began playing at local
venues in Lipan, Stephenville, Mineral Wells and Granbury. It was in Stephenville, at Bostocks Billiards &Bar where the artist got his second boost of confidence. A man named Mike Stanley listened to Giovannie play at the open mic night and sought him out afterward to pay him a compliment. “I thought you were just one of the regular guys that come out here to play,” said Mike, “but you are very unique and very talented.” That comment propelled Giovannie forward and he began playing in earnest. From Fuzzy’s Tacos in Mineral Wells to every small club he could find in the surrounding

areas; Giovannie began shaking hands with people who came out to hear him play and before you know it…he had built a fan base. Today, Giovannie and his band The Good Lucks, which consists of Charlie Little on lead guitar, Jacob Conway on drums and Ruben Najera on bass, play what one listener described as, “Country music with a little rock ‘n roll and a Giovannie bluesy tone. If you close your eyes and listen to the twenty one year old Giovannie sing you would think he is a much older, seasoned, musical veteran.” Giovannie Yanez shows up at DocPossum’s many Thursday nights and at Chip Scott’s Open Mic Night if you are in the mood for some great country music. Or, you can check out Giovannie &The Good Lucks on Face Book for a schedule of their upcoming performances and keep your eyes open for their new CD coming out soon. Oh, and T-shirts will be arriving in the next few weeks… how’s that for a confidence booster?

Dining Loco Coyote is Loyd McClanahan’s third career move. Growing up in west Texas, the son of a race horse trainer, he too trained race horses prior to becoming a golf pro for twenty years. Becki McClanahan grew up in the DFW area and went to college at Texas A&M University. She met her husband at the race track where she worked. They will celebrate 21 years of marriage this August.
Loco Coyote Grill A Hidden Gem By: Janie Harris Loco Coyote Grill – Load up, get out of town, and head to Loco Coyote Grill. This Luckenbach style bar and grill is out in the country ten miles or so from the nearest town but owners Loyd and Becki McClanahan go the extra mile to make the trip worth your while. “How crazy is it
that there’s this hole in the wall little grill down a dirt road off a small highway that’s basically EPIC!” said a recent customer who made the pilgrimage all the way from Nacogdoches. Come hungry and be prepared for what one diner dubbed “comaportions”. The delicious appetizers include cheese fries, brisket nachos and their most popular item, onion rings. Then, dig in to a Texas sized plate full of delicious barbeque,
steaks, burgers, poboys, catfish or shrimp. “The brisket is a thing of B.E.A.U.T.Y. The fights for the crusty parts almost led to armed combat among my boys,” a Virginia visitor remarked. Even before the McClanahan’s recent purchase of the restaurant and its adjoining acreage, they were loyal customers of Loco Coyote; often riding their motorcycles out from the DFW area to eat at the popular grill. Like the McClanahans, their customers come from all over. Texas Swing Hall of Famer, Mr. Derwood Strube and his caretaker, Jennifer, make the drive two or three times a week from Proctor Texas. A framed news article about Mr. Strube hangs on the wall next to the table where they sit every time they visit and they never deviate from their favorite menu items. The customer coming from the farthest distance, that they’re aware of, heard about Loco
Residents of the Glen Rose area call Thursday nights “Loco Locals Thursday.” Cindy Glover has been coming out on Thursdays for the last ten years…she even held her wedding rehearsal dinner at the restaurant. “It’s just been amazing since Loyd and Becki bought it. We have even become great friends.” Cindy will most certainly be around at the end of August when her favorite band, Union Hill, will be performing on the stage at Loco Coyote. Every Saturday night from 6 to 9p.m. you can hear some of the best in Texas country entertainment. “We try to always support local talent,” says Becki, “but we once had a blues band out of Chicago. One of our performers is even on his way to becoming a contestant on The Voice.” Although Becki won’t reveal this local talents name she did mention that another regular performer, Jesse Jennings, just cut an album and his first single has just hit the radio. The stage at Loco Coyote is set up outdoors with lots of seating and plenty of shade during the day and cooling misters rimming the patios on warm summer nights. Inside, the floors are covered with sawdust and
festive lights hang overhead. Seating is at picnic tables and the atmosphere is casual and eclectic.
Randy Freeman, the bartender at Loco Coyote, serves up Texas beers and whiskeys, six varieties of wine and his signature Bloody Mary, which he garnishes with bacon! Great food, good drinks and friendly staff make Loco Coyote Grill well worth the drive from just about anywhere. A Stephenville resident recently posted, “I’m reluctant to review this place because I fear that it will become wildly popular, but nevertheless they deserve it. Order anything at this amazing little bar and grill and you’ll enjoy it.” Too late sir…I believe the word is out!!
