Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
Howdy Neighbors! September is here and everyone is counting down the remaining days of summer. New beginnings are taking place daily; the school year has started, football season begins, dance classes resume for the fall, a new season of television shows debut and here at My Hometown’s Texas we are celebrating a new beginning too! I read a quote that went something like, “Good fences make great neighbors”. Maybe that’s true…depending on your neighborhood, but we like to think that getting
to know one another and celebrating our accomplishments and unique gifts is what make neighbors great. To that end, we are thrilled to announce the joining of My Hometown’s Texas Parker County and My Hometown’s Texas Hood and Somervell Counties into one magazine! Our goal is to keep you, our readers, informed about all the activities and events happening not only in, but all around your neighborhood. Each month we will let you in on all the upcoming cultural and entertainment events and venues, restaurants, theatres, shopping, music and nightlife in this big neighborhood we all
call home. Some months we’ll even take you further afield to some out of the way places and events that are worth the extra drive. As always, the calendar of events pages will be your guide to all the happenings – you’ll want to keep it as a handy reference for our expanded area listings. “Boyhood” - A Texas based film 11 years in the making! Boyhood is a new American epic coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Richard Linklater and starring Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater and Ethan Hawk. Shot intermittently over an eleven-year period from May 2002 to October 2013 as the young star (Coltrane) grew from childhood to adulthood. Shot entirely throughout the state Texas, Boyhood is a unique collaboration that gives viewers front row seats to the young life of Mason Evans, Jr. The story begins in 2002 as we follow six-year-old Mason, his older sister Samantha, and their single mother Olivia moving to Houston so their mother can attend the University of Houston. The children’s father, Mason
Sr. (Ethan Hawke) lives in Alaska and soon comes to visit the children. In 2005 we see Olivia taking Mason to meet her new professor whom she soon marries and blends their families. Bill becomes abusive as alcoholism takes over his life and has a strict parenting style. Both children endure hard times and uncomfortable situations as they try to make it with a “blended” family. In 2008, while campaigning for Barack Obama, Mason Sr. learns of Samantha’s new boyfriend and talks to both her, and Mason, about contraceptives. He and Mason go camping at Pedernales Falls State Park and solidify their relationship. Soon,

Olivia, Mason and Samantha grow into their new lives in San Marcos. Olivia teaches psychology at college and marries a student, Jim, a veteran of the Afghanistan/Iraq War. Mason begins using drugs and alcohol while receiving attention from girls. Mason Sr. also remarries and has a new child. Young Mason visits his new step-mother’s parents and receives some unusual gifts for his fifteenth birthday. Later, Mason attends a party and meets Sheena, who becomes his girlfriend. In 2012, Mason and Sheena visit Samantha at the University of Texas at Austin, where they are caught in bed together by Samantha’s roommate. During Mason’s senior year in high school, he has a painful breakup with Sheena, but also wins a state photography contest and is awarded a college scholarship
to Sul Ross State University. His father gives him relationship advice, and his mother, Olivia, soon breaks down realizing she has nothing now that her children have grown up and leaving her… realizing her mistakes as a mother and the consequences of her own failed relationships. Boyhood is a break-through film in every sense, and gives viewers a scenic backdrop of our beautiful state of Texas. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and was declared a landmark by many notable film critics, with particular praise for its direction, acting, and scope. FUN FACT: Ethan Hawke was born in Austin,Texas - the only son of a teenage couple. He rose to fame in 1989’s Dead Poet’s Society, playing the shy and cringing Todd Anderson. Jimmy Sorrells

Granbury James Haddock
After a 44 year career in education as a teacher and counselor, James Haddock seemed to just unleash a passion for art. He has learned much from observing nature while living on and improving a five acre wooded lot. So it was natural that the textures and colors of nature would appear in Jame’s paintings. The spring and fall colors of North Texas can be seen in his paintings. James last position in education was as a counselor with kindergarten children. “I used play and art in working with this age group,” said James. “They taught me a valuable lesson that even adults should play.” That is exactly what art is for James – play.
In creating his paintings, it is a process of building up layers of texture and many layers of paint. Thus, all papers and objects are encased in medium. The layers of paint create brilliant colors much like those seen in the seasons of spring and fall. James said the textures and brilliant colors thrill and keep him painting day after day. Be sure to visit Your Private Collection Art Gallery on the Granbury Historic Square to see his art.

A
s the daughter of a Creek Path Cherokee saddle maker in the historical area of Fort Worth, her background provided the interest in western genre for many of her paintings. Extensive travel has brought diversity to her subject matter which also includes Native American, wildlife, still life, and portraiture. Reflected in her creative process is the theme of “the enduring spirit,” the delicate balance in the relationship between man and his environment.

James mixed media art is experimental art. He normally does not have a preconceived idea about the art piece when he starts, which is so exciting because the outcome is always surprising. When James begins with a specific idea, the result often surprises him, thus each finished piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind, and never can be duplicated. 6 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

In addition to her work being in SWA Art Magazine Collector’s Edition, Vonnie has won
many first place ribbons in national shows. Vonnie was commissioned to do the painting of Texas governor S.W.T. Lanham, a Weatherford native. The painting hangs at the Doss Heritage Museum. This article mentions only a smattering of Vonnie’s many accomplishments and awards. If everything had been listed, this could have turned into a book. Currently, Vonnie teaches at the Firehouse Art Gallery as well as in her Walden-Kohn Studio in Springtown. Her WAA booth sign quoting Michelangelo says “…and still I am learning.” Vonnie, too, never stops learning and giving back. You can email Vonnie at: vkohnartist@aol.com

Vonnie attended Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth in her 30’s and was already an established artist when she graduated at 43. In addition to her art degree, Vonnie studied oils with Margie Walker and watercolor with Ronald Thomasson. After working five years at Paul Bryant Bronze Foundry as a wax chaser and taking print making for three years in college, Vonnie is a sculptor and a print maker, but primarily a contemporary realistic artist. From 1995 to 2000, Vonnie hit the road doing national shows and selling lots of paintings. In 2006 Vonnie joined WAA and was vice president in charge of all shows, raising the bar from one to as many as six shows a year.

In 1975, Robyn began his professional career traveling the “road” and performing at Nashville’s largest and most popular night clubs. He became the featured headliner at not only his father’s club, Faron Young’s Jailhouse, but also the main attraction at George Jones’ Possum Holler. In the early 80’s Robyn toured almost exclusively with his Dad, opening shows for him all over the U.S. and Canada. Over the years Robyn has appeared on numerous TV shows, such as, Larry’s Country Diner and Country’s Family Reunion, Ralph Emery’s Nashville Now, The Tommy Hunter Show (Canada), Crook and Chase, Bill Anderson’s Backstage At the Opry, and the radio and televised versions of The Grand Old Opry itself (Just to name a few). In addition Robyn has performed all over the U.S. with some of the biggest country stars of all times, such as: Willie Nelson, George Jones, Conway Twitty, Jim Ed Brown, Bill Anderson, Johnny Paycheck, Tammy Wynette, Connie Smith, Marty Robbins, Roy Clark, The Bellamy Brothers, and the list just goes on and on. ROBYN YOUNG Robyn was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee into a legacy of Country Music, the son of “The Singing Sheriff” Faron Young, and the great, great, grandson of Uncle Dave Macon (the 1st star of The Grand Ole Opry).
One of Robyn’s proudest moments was leading the campaign to see his father, Faron receive his welldeserved, and overdue place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Thanks to a “media blitz” by Robyn and the help of a few good friends, such as Brenda Lee and Merle Kilgore, the goal was achieved in 2000 when Faron Young was finally recognized and inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. That’s where he joined Robyn’s great, great, Grandfather Uncle Dave Macon. And, believe it or not, while Robyn’s dad, Faron Young was known to many as “The Singing’ Sheriff”, Robyn actually was a real Deputy Sheriff serving for almost 25 years in Nashville, Tennessee’s Davidson County Sheriff’s office while accomplishing all of this. As a songwriter and artist, Robyn has written over 100 songs, some of which are featured on his album, “Written Reflection”, which was released in 2001. Over the years Robyn has released several singles. Robyn’s latest CD is “Like Father, Like Son - a Remembrance”, which features 12 of his father’s greatest hits.
