October – the Festival time of year! The month of October is traditionally the season of festivals. Here in America, we have harvest moon festivals, Oktoberfest, and Halloween festivals but the rest of the world has their share of these special Fall events also…some of which you have probably never heard of. The Tubingen Duck Race is one of the most unusual. Every year since 1999 over 7000 yellow rubber ducks are let loose in River Necker that courses through this historic town near Stuttgart in Germany. The competition starts at midday and anyone with a rubber duck can participate; and if you left yours at home in the bathtub, ducks can be rented before the race. Spectators stick their name and number on the ducks, release the toy in the water and cheer along

the riverbank as the mass of yellow bob up and down the designated stretch of the Necker. A metal weight is attached to their underside so that they don’t topple over on the way. The duck race is taken very seriously because there is 10,000 pounds worth of prizes to be won! The Chinese Lantern, or Moon Festival is a popular lunar harvest festival celebrated in China and Vietnam. The festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar, when the moon is at its maximum brightness. It is a day of family reunions much like Thanksgiving. The moon is the roundest and brightest signaling a time of completeness and abundance. During the mid-Autumn Festival, children are delighted to stay up past midnight, parading multi-colored lanterns into the wee hours as families take to the streets to moon-gaze.

Clark Gardens presents their Fall Festival “North Texas Spiciest Festival”. And, that’s just a brief list…you can check out our Calendar of Events page for a listing of even more family friendly, fun activities available for you to enjoy this month. Calling it quits!

HOLLYWOOD: DEATH, DIVORCE, AND… JUSTIN BIEBER AS ROBIN?! Can we talk?

Legendary American comic and fashion icon Joan Rivers died at the age of 81 on September 4th during a throat procedure in New York. Rivers, born Joan Molinsky in New York in 1933, has long been considered a national treasure among comics and adoring fans alike. She was known for her biting comedic style, often aimed at other celebrities, and never shied away from sharing her controversial opinions. Joan Rivers was an actress, comedian, television host, writer and producer. She was the winner of a Daytime Emmy Award, nominated for several more, and was also nominated for both a Grammy Award and a Tony

Award. She was seen as a pioneer for women comedians, and fellow comedians reacted with sadness to her passing. Joan Rivers’ career began in the 1950s on stage, but she was vaulted into the public spotlight as a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965. Her lavish New York funeral was nothing short of the spectacle that she wished for. Celebrities, designers, musicians, and every array of the art world showed up to pay respects to the lady who told it like it was.

Kris Jenner has filed for divorce from Bruce Jenner. Shocked? Yeah, neither am I. Once again, tabloid fodder is afoot and putting spins on what the real reason could be. As someone who is sick of being sick about the Jenner and Kardashian family, I welcome any opportunity to lessen the drama and “hold” this family has had on our television. Let’s all collectively agree to move on past this family and parade of mishaps! Agreed? Agreed! Unfortunately, actress Sarah Hyland..think “Haley” from Modern Family, has had to get a restraining order against ex-beau Matt Prokop after he reportedly choked her so hard she thought she would die. Insiders say she only feels safe when she is at work and is leaning heavily on co-stars for support and assurance. Is it just me or does it seem that

domestic violence is on the rise with celebrity couples? (not to mention professional athletes)

Holy Mistake Batman! Say it ain’t so!!

It has been widely reported that not only has Justin Bieber read for the infamous side-kick Robin, but that he has gotten the part! YIKES!! Thankfully, it is now being called a hoax on the part of Bieber, posting on instagram a picture of a Batman script with his name plastered on the front. Let’s all hope it is just a prank, as bat-fans are already fuming with the announcement that Ben Affleck won the coveted role of Batman, himself. Fun Fact: Did you know that Adam West has a Batman logo on his teeth? He had a cosmetic dentist put a small Batman logo in one of his molars! OUCH.

After ten successful years in the technology business, Greg Davis resigned his position in 2004 and traveled the world for one year. Upon his return to America, the images he captured soon became his life. One image in particular stands out in its ability to touch people. That image is the “Blanket Weaver”, his simple but striking photo of the blue and green hands of a Black Hmong Villager from the northern highlands of Vietnam. Greg captured this image, and virtually all of his early photos from that trip, with a $400 OLYMPUS point and shoot camera with no formal training in photography or art. Over the past few years the image of the “Blanket Weaver” has surfaced as his signature piece. To say that Greg Davis has been given a gift is an understatement. His accolades and awards over the last eight years are many and varied. From Best in Show awards at various arts festivals throughout the country to an Art of Philanthropy Award at the 2013 Winter Park Arts Festival, Greg has garnered a staggering 17 awards in his short time as a photographer. He has exhibited his work at a variety of galleries and museums from Texas to New York. Greg’s work has also been published internationally in England, Papua New Guinea and Mexico and in the United States by National Geographic.com, MSNBC.com, Itchy Feet

Johnny Rogers will be performed October 11th at 3 pm. From Chicago, New York, London, Las Vegas, and Branson to Weatherford, Johnny Rogers performs a show that has thrilled audiences across the globe. Having passion for music is one thing but having the God-given talent to perform the world’s finest tribute to music legends is another. Johnny is blessed with both and lives to share this music with audiences worldwide. Born in Chicago to parents from the southern states of Kentucky and Tennessee. His father was a radio personality in the late 40’s and early 50’s, who crossed paths with some of the biggest legends of music history including, Elvis, Hank Sr., George Jones, Lefty Frizzel, Marty Robbins and Conway Twitty, to mention a few. When he was very young, his father gave him his first guitar. He had no interest in playing, until he heard Buddy Holly for the first time. The song was “Rave On”. He said it was like someone or something turned a switch on inside of him. From that moment on, he knew what he wanted to be in life and that was someone like Buddy. His father showed him a few basic chords. That was all he needed to get started playing. While he was in high school, he tried starting his own band, but finding kids his own age with the same taste in music seemed to be impossible. So, he began to look for older guys that grew up listening to the music. He started sneaking

into the honky tonks with his father’s help and a fake ID. But, he wasn’t there to drink, he was there to learn about becoming an entertainer. Johnny’s father was very good friends with a Chicago honky tonk legend by the name of Jimmy Nichols. His father had given Jimmy his start in the late 50’s and now Jimmy would return the favor. Johnny started playing lead guitar for Jimmy Nichols at the age of 15. He was self taught and learned all styles of music. Johnny made his debut on stage at the Off Broadway Lounge. Immediately he was a big draw. People would come from miles around to see the kid with horn rim glasses and lightning guitar licks. Johnny continued playing guitar for the Chicago legend until he was 21 when he decided it was time to start his own band and his own show. Johnny will transport his audience back in time when you could go to your favorite malt shops with your favorite girl and dance to your favorite bands. His show will start with his portrayal of country legend Johnny Cash. By his side is the legendary Tommy Allsup (two time Grammy winning producer and artist). Tommy played on more than 6,500 sessions and was Buddy Holly’s friend and lead guitarist from 1958-1959. He escaped death when flipping a coin with Ritchie Valens. Ritchie called heads and the rest is Rock ‘N Roll history. In the second show, Johnny will portray Elvis Presley re-creating his Sun Studio and early RCA years. The show will climax with Johnny’s uncanny portrayal of the late great Buddy Holly. Check out our ad on page 15 www.texasoprytheater.com 817-341-1000

Harvest Moon Arts Festival and Balloons in Granbury – A Magical Weekend “Hot air balloons and fine art make the perfect marriage,” said Granbury CVB director Steve Dieterichs. “The balloons launch just before dawn and glow at dusk. In between, visitors can enjoy a highcaliber art festival against the backdrop of Texas’ most historic courthouse square.” That quote alone should be enough to entice everyone to come out to the historic town of Granbury October 17, 18 and 19 for two spectacular weekend events. For thirty nine years the Historic Granbury Merchants Association has celebrated the fall, adorned the famous courthouse square, and invited the entire Dallas/Fort Worth area to the Harvest Moon Festival of the Arts. This year, the HGMA, in conjunction with the City of Granbury and the Granbury Arts Alliance, is kicking off the festival with the first ever (BIG) Balloons in Granbury event. “Whether you’re a photo enthusiast or casual traveler, bring an extra memory card for the camera because there will be plenty of sights to capture and to cherish,” said Dieterichs. in the new streets, parking, storm drainage, streetlights, curbs and gutters and beautiful landscaping around the square. Virtually everything “outside the fence” of the Tabernacle grounds has been renovated. The $800,000 Phase I of the project, which was fully funded by the City of Springtown, has even been nominated for an award by the Texas Downtown Association. Now it’s time to preserve the Tabernacle itself and everything inside the park fence for future generations. Phase II will include such items as a new roof for the building, new electrical inside and out, new sidewalks, new sod and, because it is SPRINGtown, a fountain on the Tabernacle lawn. The funding for Phase II will be in the form of public donations. As of today, the committee has received approximately 35% of their projected goal of $125,000. Although much of the already donated funds came from individuals, churches, businesses and prior fundraisers, some of the largest donations have come from “Tabernacle Tuesdays” held by local restaurants. For each designated weekday within a given month (and it could be Mondays or Wednesdays as well), a sponsoring restaurant has been donating between 10 and 20% of their proceeds to the Tabernacle Fund. January through September’s

The day-long event, held October 18th from 10 a.m. to 10p.m., will include food trucks, a washer pitching tournament, a chili cook-off, new cars on display by area car dealerships, live entertainers, a street dance in the evening, and a raffle with some EXCITING prizes! It promises to be a day of fun for the whole family. All the proceeds from the event will benefit the Tabernacle Fund. Head on over to Springtown October 18th and enjoy great food, music, and fun, along with a generous dose of small town hospitality! ACTIVITIES

The Tabernacle – Cultural and Spiritual Heart of Springtown Since Springtown’s inception in the late 1800’s, the opensided area for meeting on the town square called the “Tabernacle” has been the focus for town life in the community. Weddings, religious services, political rallies, graduation ceremonies, funerals, and community activities have taken place at the historic site over the years. Countless lives have been touch by the events and public performances held on and around the Tabernacle stage. For the past four years, the Friends of the Tabernacle Committee, a group of local citizens interested in preserving and renovating the downtown Springtown area, have been meeting in an effort to achieve that goal. The earliest fruits of their labors can be seen

Singer/songwriter and Leander, Texas native, Erica Perry, unleashed her first full length album “Wandering Daisy” in early 2014. Her country bohemian style as an artist has gained her many fans over the years. Perry began singing at a young age and is certainly no stranger to performing in front of thousands of fans. She became one of “America’s Sweethearts” when she was picked as a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. Erica didn’t just cheer in front of the massive crowds, she also sang; both at Texas Stadium and on a USO tour in Iraq and Korea where she entertained the troops. When her time ended with the Cowboys she immersed herself in singing and song writing. Erica wrote or co-wrote all the songs on “Wandering Daisy.” In addition,

she starred in the reality TV series “The Next” with country artist John Rich and made it to the top four in Dallas and the top 25 in the nation. That experience made her realize that she wanted to do music her way and on her terms. “Fame or money isn’t what drives me to do what I love,” says Perry. “I really do have a gypsy soul and, of course, I would love to play for thousands of people but only because I could move someone emotionally as others have done for me.” “Song writing is an outlet for me,” says the artist. “When I’m sad, mad or happy, it’s my way to hide from reality and face it, all at the same time.” Erica has honed

her craft playing around the DFWMetroplex and teaming up with well-known country artists and writers to get her special brand of music noticed by the public. She was able to write an item off her personal bucket list when she performed at the Bluebird Café in Nashville earlier this year. Erica shares the dreams of many aspiring country artists; playing at the Grand Ole Opry, hearing one of her songs on the radio, charting a single on the music charts, having a major artist

perform one of her songs, and playing to a sold out crowd. But her ultimate aspiration is a simple one she says, “Music is truly healing and if someone else can’t speak the words, I will do it for them. That is my goal!” For more information on Erica Perry and a list of concert dates go to: www.ericaperrymusic.com Or check her out on Facebook.

DINING

Their logo says it all… Swanny’s BBQ Steakhouse really is a little bit of heaven! Operating out of the space on Hwy. 377 in Granbury that was once Buffalo Gap, this restaurant, with its rustic style patio, excellent service and wonderful food, is a triple threat in the restaurant sense of the word. A recent reviewer had my mouth watering just by listing the items he had ordered from the menu; quail wrapped in bacon and stuffed with jalapenos, prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, hot rolls with butter and, for dessert, peach cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream!

The menu also includes sausage, ribs, turkey, brisket, burgers and more…all of which come highly recommended. The outside patio is the perfect place to sample one of Swanny’s tasty margaritas or an ice cold beer and listen to a little live music performed by some of the best talent in the area. Or, show off your talent at Swanny’s Karaoke Night offered each Tuesday from 7 to 11p.m. “We usually come here for the great steaks, says one diner, but the French onion soup was the Bomb! The food at Swanny’s was a surprise to me. I’ve eaten there several times and haven’t
