Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy Holidays! find myself wondering why we call the days Isurrounding Christmas “the

Holidays”. I always think of a holiday as the word is defined: “a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done”. I don’t know about you, but for me this is the busiest time of the year. Decorating, shopping, cooking, bundling up for the cold…yes, I consider that work…no rest is present in any of those activities. As our communities gear up for the season they too are busy working hard to make your season fun and memorable. Festivals abound, beginning with December 6th when three

area cities hold grand holiday events. The City of Aledo’s, Christmas Tyme in Aledo with shops open late and handing out treats for area shoppers, Azle’s Christmas Parade and tree lighting ceremony and Clark Gardens Garden A Glow celebration with hayrides, a weenie roast with s’mores, Santa, music and dancing all take place on the 6th. Granbury, Weatherford and Springtown each hold their annual Tour of Homes in December and The City of Weatherford has added a new event to the calendar this year called Holiday in the Park at Heritage Park (you can read all about it in the activities section of the magazine). Area shops and boutiques are also preparing for the holiday onslaught and stocking their shelves with new items daily. With a plethora of unique and

There is so much to see and do in our communities this year that it will be hard to fit it all in before the Holidays are over. So, bundle up, grab family and friends, and enjoy this busy time of year. As always, be sure to check out the back of the magazine for coupons to help save you money and time this season. Maybe we can all find time to take a real “holiday” after the New Year. The folks here at My Hometowns Texas wish you all a season filled with joy and love!

TWO HOLIDAY NUTS AND UNEXPECTED TUNES OH HOW DUMB! Every now and again we are thrown into an abyss by a film so astoundingly stupid that it manages to reign supreme at the box office. Dumb and Dumber To easily lives up to that hype, as it continues to draw sentimental crowds with humorous familiarity to the theatres nationwide. Dumb and Dumber To smashed its competitors with a staggering $38 million dollar weekend opening. Starring Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels, this over-thetop buffoonery comedy is once again the creation of the famed Farrelly brothers. It’s been 20 years and Harry Dunn has found something out - he has a daughter! Lloyd Christmas, his equally dim witted friend, takes one look

at a picture of her, develops a crush, and insists the two track her down. What ensues when Harry finally agrees is a bizarre encounter with an old lady and more hilarity because of their sheer stupidity. The first Dumb and Dumber, released in 1994, was also a smash hit that left millions of fans wanting more of the loveable but knucklehead duo and their roadside adventures. Laurie Holden, Kathleen Turner, and the oh-soredneck Mama June also have feature roles in the film. What do you think? Dumb and Dumberest in 2034? Dumb and Dumber Tres? Hmmm… either way, we’ll surely flock to the theatres for the next one guys! IT’S IN THE AIR… Unless you have been living under a rock or on a far-away planet, you have come to notice that we are now in full holiday mode. When holiday music comes to mind, everyone surely conjures up the classics like Bing Crosby’s “White

Christmas”, Frank Sinatra’s “Let it Snow”, and Brenda Lee’s version of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”. However, holiday music is back in full force this year as new and older artists put out new albums for our enjoyment. Who would have guessed that Family Guy Creator Seth McFarlane gets in to the spirit with the release of “Seth McFarlane – Holiday for Swing”, the comic’s Christmas themed album with 1940’s and 50’s Show tunes with guest appearances. Let’s also be sure to check out a new album from a favorite throwback bandEarth, Wind, and Fire’s “Holiday”. The iconic R&B, soul and funk band covers everything from

“Winter Wonderland” and “The Drummer Boy” to “Joy to the World” and “Jingle Bell Rock”. Christmas at Downtown Abbey. In case you can’t get enough of the popular show “Downtown Abbey”, you can now hear some of the stars of the show tackle Christmas classics. Performers include Elizabeth McGovern, Julian Ovenden and more. FUN FACT: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” continues to be the number one downloaded holiday song of all time. Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole vie for the coveted number 2 spot. Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Stacey Watkins’ gallery, “Your Private Collection”, you can see the works of many artists who are recognized nationally in the art community. You can also see Stacey’s own art hanging in her gallery. “I love to show people my art and not tell I am the artist so I can see true reactions,” says Stacey. “I enjoy hearing what they have to say and feel. After I hear how they feel about my art then I tell them why I make it and hope it leaves them with a positive feeling.”

Although Stacey’s previous education was science oriented, her passion since childhood has been art, which has led her

to combine the two into a unique medium. The artwork she composes is a blend of phosphorescent pigments and resin. Since this medium absorbs UV light (black light or natural sun light) and changes in the dark to a glow with contrast of vibrant colors her work visually evolves and is re-born with each new day’s dawn of early light. But Stacey’s art is not limited to just one medium or theme. Her mixed medium art begins with combing the salvage yards for interesting finds that can include copper, metal, glass and any other material that speaks to her and that she can incorporate into one of her unique pieces. Most of her pieces have a story and the ebb and flow of the colors of pigment make the artwork’s appearance change, “much like clouds moving in the sky,” says Stacey. Most of her artwork is faith based because, “it was God who helped get my life back in order to create the art I do…there are no ends to the possibilities in life or in art.” Stacey’s art is gaining attention in national and international juried shows as well as in

HE TEXAS OPRY THEATER INVITES YOU TO EXPERIENCE CHRISTMAS AT THE OPRY! The Texas Opry Theater in Weatherford is presenting its Christmas Season of Shows at The Opry differently from many of your other area live theaters this year. Instead of the same show performed multiple times by the same entertainers and artists this year, The Texas Opry Theater is presenting 5 different shows with different themes and different artists. Our goal is to provide something for everyone to choose from. On December 6th, The Texas Opry Theater presents a well known legendary singer/songwriter, Jimmy Fortune, with his Acoustic Trio. Opening the 3pm show will be Michael Hix and Lisa Layne, because Michael and his band have to be at Windstar in Oklahoma that evening. Lisa Layne has spent more than 15 years in Branson performing her award winning tribute to Patsy Cline. Lisa’s very early claim to fame is her voice that you hear every Christmas in “All I Want for Christmas Is You!” Lisa was performing with Vince Vance and the Valiants at the time that song was recorded and she was the lucky lady they chose to sing the song with that has become such a favorite all over the world at Christmas. She will most certainly sing it for you live at both shows at 3pm and 8pm. Since Michael could not stay for the 8pm show, another immensely talented singer, Tommy Horton, will be here to

Jimmy Fortune was with the Statler Brothers for over 21 years as the little guy at the end with the high tenor voice that identified the Statler Brothers music for so many years. Jimmy Fortune joined the Statlers in 1981 when Lew DeWitt took a medical leave and later passed away in 1990. The gospel foundation of the Statler Brothers was a perfect fit as Jimmy Fortune said, “I was raised in gospel music and really enjoyed the mix of the secular music and gospel music.”When the beloved Statler Brothers decided to retire in 2002, lead singer Don and his real life brother bass singer Harold Reid, along with the group’s baritone Phil Barsley remained in Virginia. Jimmy launched his solo career out of Nashville bringing his touching songs to life with his awe-inspiring vocals, “I love writing songs, I love singing and I love playing guitar.” On December 13th at 3pm, The Texas Opry Theater features, The Blackwood Quartet. Mark Blackwood is the son of Cecil Blackwood and has carried on the family tradition and sound that has made the Blackwood name world famous. The Blackwood Quartet and the Blackwood Brothers Quartet have been singing since 1934 and have been featured on the prestigious Arthur Godfrey Talent Show in 1954 to many other TV shows including The Barbara Mandrell Show, Hee

Haw, and toured with Elvis Presley with J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet for many years. Also performing will be Bill Brooks and Holly Tucker and The Amazing Made in Texas Show Time Band. Bill Brooks has an amazing history in the music and voice over business in Texas and all over the world. He is a fabulous singer, a recording artist, producer of voice artist demos; he narrates books, audio books, etc. Last but certainly not least of the shows at The Texas Opry Theater on December 20th at 6pm, is the return of Larry Turner and Doug Brewin from LEGENDS INTERNATIONAL located in Las Vegas, Branson and Myrtle Beach. These two very talented artists will perform a tribute to three of our more recent legendary SUPER STARS OF COUNTRY MUSIC -- The New King of Country Music George Strait, next runner up Alan Jackson, and the duo of Brooks and Dunn. Larry looks and sounds very much like the real George Strait and Doug Brewin is an astounding spitting image of and sings like Alan Jackson. The two join together and hit the stage as Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn. You will be totally and utterly amazed and 100% entertained by the talents of these two tribute entertainers. Then the Big E, Donny Edwards, returns to The Texas Opry Theater on January 1, 2015 for the 6th time to sell it out and leave the audience wanting more and more. The nine member Ultimate Tribute Band Fever and Dion Pride (son of Charley Pride) will help bring in the New Year the right way....with the thrill and enchantment of Elvis songs and music. Donny Edwards was born and raised in Lake Jackson, Texas and loved listening to Elvis music as a child. He always had people commenting on how much he looked like Elvis. He

never thought that he would become one of the top three ETA’s (Elvis Tribute Artist) in the entire world. Donny is now based out of Las Vegas with his wife Donna. Together they travel the world introducing the next generations to Elvis music and thrilling those of us that remember the original Elvis Presley as the King of Rock ‘n Roll. There you have four very different shows that hopefully some of you will want to come and experience all of them. There is A Country Legend on December 6th at 3pm and 8pm, Southern Gospel, Christmas music and a little Elvis Gospel on the December 13th at 3pm, a Super Star Country Christmas Tribute Show on December 20th and then the big New Year’s Day Celebration with Donny Edwards on January 1 at 6pm. Just as we planned.... SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Call and reserve your seats now for one or all of these shows at The Texas Opry Theater. We offer ticket discounts in a season package of four or more shows, group discounts for your church, travel, social, family groups and gift cards for Christmas gifts for those hard to buy for family and friends at Christmas, Birthdays, and Anniversaries etc. Call 817-341-1000 for personal customer service or go on line at www. texasoprytheater.com SEE YOU AT THE TEXAS OPRY THEATER SOON!

Over the last year Dog Day Afternoon Spa has gone to the shelter and picked up the worst case dogs and treated them to a full spa day resulting in the dogs subsequently being adopted into permanent homes. It is through organizations like Ranch Hand Rescue and businesses like Dog Day Afternoon Spa that the neediest cases in the animal community have been successfully combined with the people most in need of a loving animal. [ German immigrants decorated their Christmas trees with fruit and baked pastries cut into various shapes, and later with pressed paper and tin, then hand blown glass ornaments. By the 1930’s, Japan was making glass ornaments for Woolworth’s five and dime stores, which were sold by the millions to American

Carol Cook – Christmas Ornaments with a History

S

ince the Christmas she took ownership of several family ornaments, Carol Cook has been fascinated with the history of tree ornaments. Each December for over forty-five years she has spent days sorting through and hanging her collection of cherished keepsakes on her tree. “The tradition of decorating holiday trees began in Europe,” Carol told us. “First in Germany, then Czechoslovakia, making its way to America in the mid-1800’s when English and

households.” Several of Carol’s prized ornaments were passed on to her from her mother’s holiday decorations, which came from the five and dime store in the 1940’s. What began by taking several family ornaments with her when she married and left home, turned into an on-going treasure hunt to make up a unique collection. Over the decades, Carol has continued her search for fascinating,

whimsical, and uniquely interesting ornaments in every place she has lived or travelled. Each ornament has a story and each has been photographed and insured. The almost six hundred ornaments occupy six feet of storage space when they are packed away. The ornaments have been handed down, discovered in antique stores, flea markets, or yard sales. Some were purchased new and some were received as gifts from family and friends. About a dozen of the truly treasured, hand-made ones were made by her children in elementary school. Her ornaments come from countries all over the world; Viet Nam, Japan, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Peru, Mexico and France, to name just a few. Included in her collection are spun glass icicles, birds, tiny musical instruments of glass and wood, glass zoo animals, a little wooden drummer boy hand made in Germany, tiny cars, trees, bells, crosses and angels; ornaments made from wood, glass, fabric, tin, and plastic.

She once had dozens of tiny horses, rocking horses, and carousel horses, but passed them on to her horse loving daughter Stephanie, who has begun her own collection of

ornaments. When asked if her tree is complete Carol says, “I never stop looking for just one more unique or vintage one, something that reminds me of my childhood Christmas tree; just in case something gets broken and I have room on the tree for a replacement.” Just recently Carol found a vintage glass Astronaut who awaits his turn to hang on her wonderful tree of treasures. Music/Nightlife Sounding like a mixture of her influences, Patty Griffin and Bryan Adams, Vanessa creates her own style, not country or Red Dirt, but definitely retro Texas music. It’s unique and cool, just like the artist herself. For a list of her upcoming shows go to www.vandarien. com or check her out on Facebook. Photos by Roger dWater

anessa Darien grew up in Weatherford, Texas, and was raised in a home that also functioned as her father John’s machine shop. In her father’s shop, Van heard the American Roots music that, along with her eclectic and eccentric Southern upbringing, would lay the foundation for her future in songwriting.

MUSIC

Vanessa has spent the past several years playing across Texas, from dusty beer joints to theater venues and everywhere in between. In her travels, she has shared the stage with many artists including Uncle Lucius, Mike McClure, John Fulbright, Ian Moore, Cody Canada & The Departed, and Jonathan Tyler.

pack heart and soul into every decibel as she belts out the lyrics. “Cannonball,” says Darien, “is reminiscent of restless nights in the summer when all you wanna do is drive somewhere, feel the wind between your fingers, and the road beneath your tires. No traffic, no noise, only stars. To this day I love night drives, often after shows even if it’s hours away from home in the rain; it’s one of my favorite ways to write.”

Apart from solo writing and works, Vanessa has also established many musical friendships and collaborations, with writing partners Joey Green, Maren Morris, Steven Cooper, and Ryan Michael of the Roomsounds. With a tightknit group of musicians, and the help of producer/musician Beau Patrick Bedford, Vanessa recently completed an album entitled “Silent Sparrow”. With cool, vintage sounds and Darien’s soulful vocals, one single in particular off the album titled “Cannonball”, stands out to Texas music lovers as unique. Her vocals

Dining they keep diners coming back again and again. Along with the wonderful entrees, they serve an array of special desserts including a perfect crème brulee, and their popular Grandma’s homemade banana pudding, which is the restaurant’s most requested dessert.

E

stablished in the spring of 2012, the Eighteen Ninety Grille and Lounge has had its share of reviews and articles written about it…even one in our magazine a couple of years ago. But, an eatery as good as this deserves all the accolades possible and with the Holidays approaching, a little reminder that Granbury is home to one of Texas’ best restaurants.

With their diverse menu, including dishes like jalapeno bacon macaroni and cheese, Angus burgers served with truffle fries, truffle mushroom crostini, and melt-in-your mouth steaks to name a few,

“Loved the atmosphere here at this very unique place,” noted a recent diner, “It is wonderful to have such a fine place here in Granbury and not have to drive to the DFW area.” The exposed rock walls, low lighting, dark furnishings and lovely background music playing during dinner make Eighteen Ninety the perfect place for “couple time” and area residents as well as visitors to Granbury’s historic

Eighteen Ninety Grille and Lounge 115 East Pearl Street Granbury, Texas 76048 (817) 544-3400 Hours: Closed Sunday and Monday Open Tuesday – Thursday 5:30 to 9p.m. Friday and Saturday 5:30 to 10p.m. Cocktails/4:30 Dinner/5:30

DINING

Using chef-inspired recipes that have been handed down for several generations and the freshest, highest quality local ingredients, Eighteen Ninety has managed to give its patrons a 5-star dining experience with each visit. The restaurant serves only certified Angus beef and prime pork chops along with a variety of fine seafood dishes. For some, the “secret” all-purpose family seasoning used on meat dishes is, by itself, reason enough to visit. They even occasionally fly in fresh fish that’s guaranteed twenty four hours from catch to table!

The lounge is open at 4:30 for happy hour and Wine Wednesdays feature 50% off all the wines on their extensive list.

square say it’s the perfect date night spot. Tickets to the Opera House and Eighteen Ninety Grille would make the perfect combination for a very special evening this Holiday season. Make your reservations soon!
