Of course, most everyone will remember the line from the 1990’s movie Forrest Gump when Forrest comments that, “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates…you never know what you’re going to get”; how true, how true – unless you’re my mother. Mom always seemed to have the uncanny ability to ferret out the very best chocolates in the box without ever biting into them first. As children we couldn’t figure out which candies had which filling, so every now and then we would choose incorrectly and bite into one that we didn’t care for resulting in cries of “Yuck!!” and more than a few half-eaten, dried up chocolates left among the crushed paper candy wrappers in the box when all was said and done. Not Mom…her box contained a checkerboard of strategically removed candies and all the “yucky” ones were left intact and sitting primly in their red paper housings. We honestly thought she had x-ray eyes or some equally amazing super hero quality until one day I picked up a chocolate from mom’s box and turned it over in my hand. In the center of
the bottom of the chocolate was a perfect crescent cut made by a perfectly manicured fingernail! I quickly turned over the remaining chocolates and found identical moon shaped indentions in them all. As it turns out…mom DID know what she was going to get… at least when it came to chocolates. Of course, most chocolate boxes today have a little “index” on them somewhere describing each candy and what’s in the center. Today, mom’s sneaky little trick isn’t needed. That makes me a little sad. Mystery is one of life’s most enjoyable gifts and there is far too little of it left in today’s modern world. So, this year, if someone gives you a heart shaped box of candies for Valentine’s day, throw out the “index” and take a leap of faith…you never know, you might like just what you get.

funny years hosting the Tony’s. Expect less of the celeb-jabbing (yeah, I’m talking to you Tina Fey and Amy Poehler) and more good-ribbing slapstick from this guy. As the Academy Awards are notorious for dragging on hour by hour, we can rest assure that N.P.H. has it in mind to keep our attention span going for the long haul.
OSCARS 2015: PREDICTIONS, SNUBS AND FLUBS It’s that time of year again when you can’t find a television channel sans an awards ceremony praising the elite of Tinsel town. Well hold your remote, because the biggest mama-jama of them all is about to go down on February 22nd. The 87th Academy Awards, aka: The Oscars. The awards season (which is less a season than the half of the year between September and March) is in our midst and I am expecting the unexpected. With a plethora of incredible films, each in its’ own genre, we are in for a truly rewarding show. For openers, we are delighted to finally have Neil Patrick Harris hosting the show after many successful and incredibly
Now then, on to the films! Let’s start with Best Picture. Will win: Boyhood. Should win: Boyhood. Might win: The Imitation Game. I believe Boyhood is such a stand out film due to its’ historic film-making alone. Well over a decade here, people. Although it’s a little hard to believe Gone Girl did not make this category as at least a nominee! Best Director – Will win: Richard Linklater- Boyhood. Should win: Richard Linklater- Boyhood. (okay, okay not a lot of guess work here) Might win: Wes Anderson – The Budapest Hotel. I only say that because the Academy seems to really love very different
and wry films in the past. Best Actor- Will win: Michael Keaton – Birdman. Should win: Michael Keaton – Birdman. Might win: Bradley Cooper – American Sniper. It could happen, people love them some Bradley Cooper…. Though Michael Keaton is super-hard to resist in this film. Best Actress – Will win: Julianne Moore – Still Alice. Should win: Rosamund Pike – Gone Girl. Might win: Reese Witherspoon- Wild. (though probably not) Now of course there are tons other categories and I wish I could list them all here, but let’s face it… we couldn’t care less who gets best sound editing. Of course, I wouldn’t dare end this article without mentioning the complete snubs of 2015! Those films
seemingly well-liked among the public, yet pushed to the side by the Academy. Fans are upset that Jennifer Anniston did not get a nomination for CakeMarion Cottilard was the one who seemingly knocked her out of the running, as Jennifer was projected to get a nomination and Marion was not. Jake Gyllenhaal was also left off of the list for Nightcrawler. Both Jennifer and Jake did receive Golden Globe Nominations for their work in their respective movies. The Lego Movie was left off the Best Animated list, as well as David Oyelowo for best actor in Selma. FUN FACT: Did you know the weight of an Oscar statuette is over 8.5 lbs and the length of the red carpet at the Dolby Theater is over 500 feet long? Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Boardwalk - Zook
There is the technical definition of what makes a piece of art “good.” But there is the other side, the emotional side. How does the artwork make you feel? Do you feel drawn into it? Does it make you feel excited and full of energy? Does it make you feel peaceful and relaxed? Or does it make you stop and ponder? Does it remind of a past experience, moment or place? Good art should make you feel something. Two area artists’, Jack Wolfsen and Rebecca Zook, will definitely evolve emotions and say to you “This is good art.” Jack Wolfsen’s works in cement, wood, bronze, and steel, but he is well awarded and known for his works made from barbwire. His trees begin with barbwire but are reborn in art of nature. He does other life forms, like this gymnast, created with hundreds feet of wire and welds. Jack lives in Weatherford, TX and his work can be seen in Granbury at Your Private Collection Art Gallery. You will often see Jack there in his barbwire cowboy hat complete with longhorn.
Rebecca can also be seen at Your Private Collection Art Gallery on Granbury square. In fact, you can meet them both on February 28 at Last Saturday Gallery Night. The Galleries of Granbury – Artefactz, Langdon Center Art Gallery, LGAA’s Shanley House Art Gallery and Your Private Collection Art Gallery host “Last Saturday Gallery Night” free art walk the last Saturday of each month. All are open until 8 with “meet the
artists”, opening receptions, demonstrations, hors d’oeuvres, wine and music. Whether you visit one of our local galleries or are looking at their website, ask yourself which pieces are you drawn to, which one seems to speak to you? That is good art.

In October of 2013, Astrid Cleveland took a gamble she didn’t know would pay off so well for herself and her family. Originally from Germany and graduating at UCF with a master’s in Technical Writing, and later obtaining a teaching certificate, Astrid was on the hunt for the perfect teaching job in the area. After frequenting the Bearcat Boutique in Aledo for more than a year with her husband and three daughters in tow, Astrid and her husband of eighteen years were asked several times by the former owners if they wanted to buy the store themselves. Finally, after not being able to find the right teaching job she was seeking and seeing a real opportunity open up to them… they agreed, and bought the Bearcat Boutique.

Music/Nightlife Crowman’s 1 Dozen Love Songs
(a love song for every rose) ... ain’t that sexy? #1. Steve Wariner “Like a River to the Sea”
It would be a major mistake on my behalf not to list “our song” as my #1 pick. My wife and I were married on Steve Wariner’s tour bus in 1994. At the time I was working at KSCS in Dallas, and the wedding was carried live on the air during Bill Kinder’s afternoon radio show from outside of Cowboys Club in Dallas. My radio / preacher buddy Mark Miller did the sermon. Steve said a few words and played an acoustic version of the song on the air after the “I Do’s”. What a great line, “like a river to the sea, my love for you grows stronger it was meant to be”. The songs meaning is even more relevant twenty years later, it’s a great love song about a life long marriage.
MUSIC
#2. George Strait “I Cross My Heart”
The megahit from George’s movie Pure Country. This song has probably been played more times than the “Electric Slide” at wedding receptions, thank God you can’t line dance to it!
#3. Johnny Rodriguez “Eleven Roses”
That little Tex-Mex love -song singing devil croons ... “I guess you noticed there are only 11 roses ... Look in the mirror and the 12th Rose will be looking back at you”! OMG what woman wouldn’t melt in your arms after that line?
#4. Travis Tritt “Drift Off To Dream”
This super sexy love song from Tritt must really connect with the female listener. Heck, every time I try to get in touch with my feminine side I get my hand slapped!
#5. Conway Twitty “Hello Darlin’”
The ultimate country love song singer. Conway one said that he always tried to write songs that would say to a woman what a man couldn’t bring himself to say. He gave the shy guys a way to just say “this song is for you”!
#6. Doug Stone “In A Different Light”
Pinpointing the exact moment that someone goes from friend or co-worker to potential lover is pretty exciting. Nobody delivers a love song better than Doug.
#7. Merle Haggard “Always Wanting You”
Merle Haggard wrote in his autobiography that there was one woman he truly loved but could never have, it was Dolly Parton, he wrote this song for her.
#11. Jerry Jeff Walker “A Woman In Texas”
#8. Tommy Alverson “Texas Woman”
#12. Garth Brooks “Papa Loved Mama”
Written by rodeo announcer Charlie Throckmorton. Of course we all know the smartest prettiest most lovable women are from Texas right?
#9. Scotty McCreery “Lay Low”
I would pay good money to have a voice like this guy. He could make “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” sound like a love song!
#10. Faith Hill & Tim McGraw “Let’s Make Love”
Whoa, with lyrics like this .. “I want to feel you in my soul til the sun comes up”!? Ok, twist my arm.
Another love song about Texas women, see what I mean, you never hear songs about Kansas women, or Florida women.
I had to put this one in there! When you love someone enough to run an 18 wheeler through a motel room, that’s true love!
