Welcome to My Hometowns Texas

Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Spring has finally found its way to our small slice of the world, bringing with it desperately needed showers and the occasional sunshiny day. Warmer temperatures are finding trees ready to burst with bright green showy leaves and eager spring bulbs rearing their heads from the earth. People are abandoning their heavy winter coats for lighter jackets and thinner materials in preparation for warmer days. Spring is certainly in the air! We are all very lucky to live in an area where the communities really celebrate this time of year. After our relentless summers and slow-moving winters, spring is a heralded season for all north Texans. One can easily find willing participants in festivals, spring parties, wine and dining events… the list goes on and on. Let’s face it, we have cabin fever and are ready to fly the coop and enjoy the outdoors and My Hometowns Cultural and Entertainment Magazine

makes it too easy to find the fun! Did you know you can view the magazine online and even go to our website to locate all the good stuff you simply can’t miss out on? The Wine Walk in Granbury is always a wine lover’s choice, (FOUR wineries in Hood County alone) and happens during the heart of spring season April 24th and 25th. Wineries, foodies, vendors, and special guests will create an unforgettable experience for any wine enthusiast. Weatherford Blooms is slated for April 25th in the historic downtown district in Weatherford. This highly anticipated annual event draws thousands to its home and garden themed festival, complete with various vendors, food trucks, antique and classic car show, entertainment areas, not to mention more flowers and lawn expertise than you can shake a stick at! … Don’t miss out on this incredible event. Chandor Gardens “Spring Fling” kicks off the season on

April 4th with local artists, crafters, musicians, and food. The historic and beautiful botanical gardens located in Weatherford, is an absolute gem of the city. Tucked behind every secret English and Chinese designed garden room, is yet another. Come and enjoy the atmosphere, the flowers, the vendors, the sights and sounds that are Chandor Gardens. (and don’t forget that camera for this is THE perfect Easter photo op!) You know, there really is something about the eternal renewal of the spring season. Maybe it’s the freshness in the air, blowing away the cold winter and ushering in a fragrant and clean smell. Maybe it’s the mind’s perception of a slate wiped clean and a new beginning. Or perhaps, it’s the sentimental thoughts of love, fresh flowers, and an enjoyment of outdoor spaces. I think it’s all of the above. Whatever it means to you, go forth and enjoy and explore my friends!

the latest and greatest equipment and cameras are used, filmmaking is still, after all, an art. It is one that has many, many steps needed to produce a worthy film project, and kids are clawing at the opportunities to dig right in!

FILM CAMPS FOR KIDS IN TEXAS

As

we all bask in the warmer spring weather and look forward to the upcoming film season of Hollywood blockbusters, we don’t have to look far to get our own foot in the door of filmmaking! There are many opportunities right here in the Lone Star State for our youth to stretch their creative limbs and dive head first into the learning side of the ‘biz. Every year more and more summer camps for filmmaking seem to pop up across our entire region, enticing younger audiences to come and take up the novelty for themselves. In this day of digital projection and immediate hightech solutions, filmmaking is still a learning process that one must get straight from the pros. Although

Two such camps here in Texas are just examples of the many that can be found statewide. Nowhere in Texas can you find the largest number of film-related work and camps as you can in the capital of Austin. Summer at Austin Studios offers a unique opportunity for students to learn about film techniques to create their own projects. Camps include film screenings each day. Camps are usually 9am-5pm Monday through Friday at Austin Studios (1901 E. 51st Street). All levels are welcome as the camps are designed for both beginners and more experienced students. All equipment is provided. Additional information including registration fees can be found at www. austinfilm.org/summercamp.

before a live audience on a Friday, just like in Hollywood! Each student actor will also be cast in the lead role of a short film to round out their performing credits. Classes during the camp week include commercials on-camera, voiceover acting, development of various comedy style characters, and scene study for film roles. The improvisation class is a favorite activity with the young actors. Actors will also be cast not only in TV and film performances, but sketch performances, drama film rehearsing, and being filmed on a TV soundstage set. To find out more including dates and fees, go to youngactors.org or call (972) 401-2090.

FUN FACT: Did you know tons of famous actors and filmmakers went to film camps as children? You can count Natalie Portman, Jon Cryer, Robert Downey Jr. and Lea Michele among the elite that spent childhood summers having fun learning the craft!

Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Of course, if the hours-long drive to Austin isn’t appealing for you, worry not! One can find many film and film-related camps right here in the DFW area, specifically, the Rising Stars TV Sitcom Camp (ages 8-10). Young actors enter the world of TV/Film acting by being cast in a half-hour TV Sitcom show that will be taped

avid L. Prescott is known as an important contemporary wildlife artist, painting birds & other wild animals. David is a native of England, but painted in the mountains of Southern California for many years before relocating to our area nine months ago. He has been featured in many exhibits and juried shows around the UK and the US, as well as being featured in many magazines. David believes he inherited his artistic skills from his Mother and Father, whom were both extremely talented. David began his artistic career as a stained glass window artist in his hometown of Liverpool, England. He had his first one man exhibition in a city centre department store at the age of seventeen. David attended Art

In 1978, David immigrated and took up residence in the San Bernardino Mountains, where his neighbors were raccoon, black bear, cougar, big horn sheep, bob cat and golden eagles. This insatiable interest in animals began his career as a wildlife artist. Now that he is in Texas, David is getting into North American wildlife and western art, bison, cougar, grizzlies, black bears, horses and cattle. David has always had an affinity with the animals that he paints. His paintings are the result of many hours spent in the field observing, sketching and photographing wildlife and their unique habitats. That is followed by many more hours in his studio, striving to reproduce that perfection of light, composition, contrast and harmony of color that was observed while in the field. This detail to attention is very apparent in his works.

David has been a featured artist at a number of shows, both in America and the U.K. You can see David’s original works at Your Private Collection Art Gallery 106 N Houston St, Granbury, Wednesday – Sunday and anytime on their website, yourprivatecollection.com. HEALTH = FITNESS + YOU + NUTRITION (FUN)

T

here have been recent assessments about the best ideas concerning your health. This month we’ll present five of the top ten recommendations as reported by Dr. David Eifrig. 10. Blueberries- they’re full of antioxidants & vitamins. They lower cholesterol, improve eyesight and reduce inflammation. Raspberries, strawberries and blackberries all have similar benefits. 9. Music- almost a ‘miracle cure’ as it can improve mood, boost immune function, increase exercise stamina& reduce chronic/ post-surgical pain also. Studies have shown that Baroque music (Mozart) greatly improves learning, test taking, creativity & spatial reasoning. 8. Alcohol- moderate alcohol consumption of beer, wine & liquor is good for you. Wine lowers blood sugar, decreases dementia risk & protects the prostrate. Even non-alcoholic red wine contains beneficial antioxidants. Beer, full of B vitamins helps maintain healthy insulin levels. Moderation is the key- too much disrupts sleep cycles, increases blood pressure & increases cancer risks. 7. Massage- it decreases inflammation while modulating the immune system. Swedish style seems best as it detoxifies muscle & body tissue and enhances immune system function with increased range of motion & decreased pain. It can improve your mood and energy flow. 6. Air- excessive dust, dirt or smoke can lead to chronic inflammation, thus triggering more disease like colds & heart attacks. Polluted air is filled with various microscopic particles that cause cancer & impair immune/respiratory system functions. Aromatherapy has been shown to have beneficial aspects also.

Spring is in the air!

The

City of Weatherford Parks, Recreation and Special Events Department is busy preparing for the fifth annual Weatherford Blooms Home and Garden Festival scheduled for Saturday, April 25th. With thousands of people expected to attend, spring is certainly a welcomed season in Parker County. The

event is free to the public and is rapidly growing every year. It is also a highly anticipated event, a favorite among many residents in the area, which is done in conjunction with the downtown revitalization efforts. Located in the heart of historical downtown Weatherford, the

festival begins at 9 am and ends at 3 pm. The event will include more than 80 home and garden vendors, with attractions dispersed throughout the four quadrants around the Courthouse Square. It is the largest home and garden event in Parker County. Attendees will enjoy the many products and services which include everything from home remodeling products, designers, décor, landscape tools and equipment. In addition to the wide variety of home and garden vendors, several local nurseries will be on-site with seasonal plants and flowers. Also to be enjoyed will be local talent, food vendors, and a children’s area located near the entertainment area. Classic and antique automobiles will help ensure there are attractions for all ages. The downtown shops and restaurants will also be open for the public to enjoy during the event. Parker County Master Gardeners will provide free

educational sessions at both the festival grounds and at beautiful Chandor Gardens. The Master Gardeners will also share information and advice regarding keeping your lawn beautiful during seasons of drought, so important in our region. Special Events Coordinator Michael Howard

has dutifully paired the public with various gardening and water conservation groups on how to educate the public on maintaining gardens in times of drought. Area resident Kat Quinlan describes the event as “one of my favorite things to do in the spring, not just in Weatherford, but anywhere. My husband drools over the classic cars and tractors, while I love the ideas it gives me in spring planting and my daughter loves all the wonderful and vibrant plants. It makes me want to go home and dive in my flowerbeds!” “It’s really a great day out and we’re so glad we have it here in town without having to drive to a bigger city.” For more information about the event, or to become a vendor at the event, contact Special Events Coordinator Michael Howard at 817-598-4034, or by visiting the city’s website at www. ci.weatherford.tx.us and entering Weatherford Blooms Festival.

Nature Store Gift Shop The

new Nature Store gift shop at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center recently hosted its Grand Opening. Just over a year ago, the original store burned. With the help of generous donors, a brick purchase program, as well as the insurance proceeds, the new store was able to be built debtfree. Even the unburned portion of the siding from the old store was re-purposed into cabinets and shelving for the new store.

Remember, your purchases will help with the care and feeding of over 50 species of animals at Fossil Rim throughout the entire year, and help preserve endangered species for future generations.

SHOPPING

The new Nature Store is twice the size of the old store. It offers many sections of souvenirs and gifts for every age. You will find a great selection of children’s items, including T-shirts, hats, toys, jewelry, books, and the best selection of plush animals anywhere around. For adults, there is a large selection of specialty T-shirts, women’s casual shirts, and outerwear, as well as beautiful jewelry, home décor items, and artwork.

For an absolutely unique shopping experience, a visit to the Fossil Rim Nature Store is a must. It is accessible at 1789 County Road 2009 just outside of Glen Rose, as well as the halfway point on the scenic wildlife drive through the park. www.myhometownstexas.com

L

ight Up The Blues, a Texas Gala will be held on Saturday, April 11th beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Revolver Brewery located at 5600 Matlock Rd., Granbury. Proceeds of the event go to support the Lake Pointe Resource Center and Academy of Granbury.

MUSIC

Light Up The Blues is more than just a night of music, food, great beer and fun. It serves an even greater purpose. Each April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue along with the international autism community, in commemoration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. Its logo is a blue light bulb. Recently Hood County issued a proclamation recognizing April as Autism awareness month. Current statistics are that 1 in 68 children are estimated to be within the Autism spectrum with 1 in 45 being boys. The Light Up The Blues gala is hosted by the Lake Pointe Resource Center and Academy of Granbury, a 501c3 organization, to raise funds for the school and the resource center. The school provides children within the Autism spectrum and more, with the educational and social programs so vital to the early intervention of these students. Early intervention, education and social development are key to helping children with learning differences to one day become active and productive citizens of our community. Lake Point Resource Center is vital to the community because they provide free support groups for parents, information about respite and sibling support. They are closing the gap between the kids and the community by developing potential work environments, providing project based social development with academics and creating a forum for open communication. “It all just fell into place once we started talking with friends, everyone

wanted to do something to help.” Madalyn Cano, creator and director of Lake Pointe, told me of how the gala got its start three years ago. “We had our first gala at a local retirement village and it was very successful. But, we weren’t able to have another due to a change in management. For us, Revolver is a place to relax and enjoy local musicians, great beer and have some fun.” Steve Cano, Madalyn’s husband, plays guitar and spent some time learning the craft with Dave Milsap who will be performing at the gala with Joe Corpening. This event is a great way to enjoy the music of local legends, great beer and hang out with friends under the stars to benefit not only Lake Pointe but to help in building a bridge between our community and some of its most precious citizens. For more information, contact Sally Stanfield at 682-936-4112 or log onto lakepointegranbury.org.

Paluxy River Spring Bluegrass Festival - A Bluegrass Dream!

C

ome on out to Glen Rose April 2, 3, and 4 for the 6th Annual Paluxy River Spring Bluegrass Festival. This popular three day event is held at historic Oakdale Park right across from the beautiful “river walk” along the Paluxy River and Big Rocks Park. With performances by Joe Bass & The Double Mountain Boys, Salt Creek Bluegrass Band, West Bound Bluegrass, Third Generation, Tin Top Road, Kody Norris, Cedar Hill and Tripple L, the weekend promises to be a bluegrass lovers’ dream! While you’re there check out, or stay at, the wonderful Oakdale Park.

Rich with history, Oakdale Park has been a recreational facility for the Glen Rose area since 1925. One of only a few surviving “motor courts”, once popular in the 1920’s and 30’s, still in existence, the park boasts beautifully restored cabins and a host of fun activities, such as the Bluegrass Festival, which take place throughout the year. Admission for Thursday, April 2nd is $15 and for Friday, April 3rd and Saturday April 4th it’s $20. For festival reservations you may call 254-897-2321.
