My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine - 3

Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine It’s June – Let’s Celebrate All the Happy Fathers in Our Lives! Lately, I’ve been talking with a lot of people about what qualities make a man a good father. Kindness, generosity, nurturing spirit, were high on the list of favorites, followed closely by a man’s ability to be the steady rock a family leans on or the hard-worker who still makes time to attend every game, lesson, recital or school function their child participates in. All of these traits and many others were near the top of the list. But, when the people I polled really thought about the question, they unanimously said “a sense of humor” was number one! This revelation didn’t really surprise me because that’s what I had been thinking too. Although my mother is no slouch in the humor

department, my dad was always the one who could make everyone laugh. So, it’s no surprise, that when I met a man that made me laugh I married him. Although that wasn’t the only qualification that made him a good father, it was certainly the one used most often when our kids were growing up. He was never afraid to look the fool if it solicited a laugh from them. His humor got the family through difficult times, made the good times even better and taught our children that a well-developed sense of humor is a quality that will advantage them throughout their lives. At My Hometowns Texas we are all about celebrating the funny and fun-loving dads out there. Take that special guy out and treat him to a riproaring good time at the 67th Annual Frontier Days PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford where

he’ll be thrilled by some of the best rodeo entertainment in the nation. Or, treat dad to a taste of African safari at the Father’s Day Sunset Safari Dinner and Tour at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose where he can get up close to some of the most exotic and beautiful animals on earth. Take a peek at our Activities and Calendar of Events pages for a list of the many fun things to do with dad this year! I’ve heard it said that, “laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” Our wish for all you guys out there is for a Father’s Day that includes at least one great big belly laugh shared with the folks you love.

SPIES, SEQUELS, AND SILLINESS

D

on’t call it the most serious of box openings this month. It seems all major studios have decided to collectively release their least intelligent films at once. Moviegoers, naturally, will eat it up. Heralded as the month of a large question mark in an anything goes type of season, June provides studios the perfect time slot to release their quirkiest and sometimes questionable films. They are banking on large audience turn outs from students being out of school and nicer weather beckoning people out of their rainy blues. Slapstick comedy, dinosaur sequels, and talking imaginary bears will bring a nice crowd to the theatres for those seeking to get out and enjoy the first part of summer.

Spy, a comedy featuring comedian Melissa McCarthy, is first up to bat. Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster. The real treat in this film is the casting of Miranda Hart, a brilliant and hysterical English actor that plays a small role as McCarthy’s best friend. Opening June 5th nationwide. Sure to be a massive early summer hit, Jurassic World has kept fans in the wait for more than two full decades. 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a dinosaur adventure park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. This new park is owned by the Patel Corporation. Owen (Chris Pratt), a member of Jurassic World’s on-site staff, conducts behavioral research on the Velociraptors. Jurassic World’s attendance rates begin to decline and a new attraction, created to re-spark visitor interest, backfires. Universal Pictures notes the special effects scenes in this sequel are some of the best to ever

hit movie screens. But seriously, can you believe it’s been 22 years since Jurassic Park came out?? Opening June 12th nationwide. As promised, here’s the silly. Ted 2, opening June 26th is the sequel to the 2012 film Ted, directed by Seth MacFarlane. This time around, Ted (Seth MacFarlane) is attempting to raise a child with his new wife, but in order to do so, he must prove that he’s a person. This film also features big-screen draw and summer goldmine Mark Wahlberg. In a 2012 interview with Collider, Mark Wahlberg raved about Ted 2 saying, “Seth’s ideas for the second one are sick. He comes from the world of episodic television so he knows how to tell the stories, man, in a way that most people don’t.”

in films such as action-packed San Andreas in 3D, horror film Insidious 3, and the Disney animated film Inside Out. Again, this is the month of anything goes, and usually does. So no matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find something to your liking in this bizarre (but great) month of releases. Off to the theatre you go!! Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg first learned about Jurassic Park during a meeting in 1989, with the book’s author, Michael Crichton. The two had actually met to discuss a screenplay he had written for what would eventually become the TV series ER. By: Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Art there were endless facets to art. It’s during her years at UCA that she began to hone in on the diversity of the art world and in turn this discovery led her to develop her own passions in glass, metals and clay. “I found I loved making things no matter what, as simple as something for the house to something I consider fine art. I love using my imagination.”

W

hen we spoke, Cynthia James, owner of Arefactz and award winning artist, was preparing to have photographs of her work taken for her website and social media pages. “This day and age it’s more complicated to keep up with one’s art. You must have a website and social media so people all over the world can view your art and potentially become customers and fans.” Although she prefers to just be an artist, Cynthia is so much more. She is an entrepreneur, a savvy businesswoman, an adventurer and most importantly a kind and generous lady. A self-proclaimed military (Navy) brat from both coasts, she moved around a lot but started college at Longwood College in Virginia. When she married, she and her husband moved to Arkansas. She soon went back to school, and that is when she earned a BA in teaching with a major in art, at the University of Central Arkansas. While attending school, she got to meet and hang out with new and different kinds of artists. She learned about different mediums and styles of art, and she learned

Cynthia has developed a keen eye for beauty. She is not limited to working with glass, although anyone who has seen her work will tell you, she excels at it. Cynthia also works with metal and clay in varying forms. She can transform just about anything into a work of art. A special piece of jewelry she has created is called a custom memory necklace. If you bring in your treasures like an old class ring, a baby ring, a key or a charm, Cynthia will create a one of a kind masterpiece just for you. She creates jewelry that can be small and delicate or larger pieces that are striking and impressive. She has even taken on commissions to do various sized sculptures. Most recently she accepted a commission from the Brazos Pregnancy Center, to sculpt award plaques for various levels of accomplishments. It is her keen eye for beauty and her understanding of various art genres that has made her studio/gallery the crowning jewel it is on the Granbury Square. When you enter you will see a menagerie of art, not just a couple of paintings hung silently on a plain wall. The entirety of the space within is used to bring out the beauty of every piece of jewelry, painting and sculpture. Last year she purchased a building on the square, the Carriage House,

from Linda Preston. It came with a workshop. “My work is still at Artefactz, but the carriage house is a working studio and is open to visitors. I’ve been very pleased. I still have three rooms at home that I work out of, two outdoor buildings, including a kiln and one indoor.” For about fourteen years now Artefactz has been steadily growing, introducing new artists to the people and visitors of Granbury, and most recently receiving awards. Cynthia became the recipient of the prestigious, “Women in the Arts Recognition Award” from the Elizabeth Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In recognition of that award, www.myhometownstexas.com

the mayor of Granbury, Nin Hulett, presented Cynthia with a proclamation on May 5, 2015 that stated, “We are proud you have been acknowledged for your outstanding creativity and artistic flair, and we are grateful to have your artwork on Granbury’s Historic Square.” Prior to receiving the award the mayor sent a letter of recommendation to the Elizabeth Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution stating, “In short,

Cynthia’s high caliber of character and keen artistic expertise set her well above others in her field. Cynthia James is a committed and creative public servant and I highly recommend her for the “Women in the Arts Recognition Award.” We are all proud to call her one of our own. SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

T

he Texas Opry Theater is hosting concerts by some of the biggest names in the traditional country music field in Weatherford this summer. Names such as Larry Gatlin with the Blackwood Quartet on Saturday, June 6th with two shows at 3pm and 8pm backed musically by their very own award winning musicians, The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band. The Blackwood Quartet will provide the famous harmonies made famous by the Gatlin brothers, local favorite Bill Brooks will open and emcee the show. Larry and his brothers were awarded three 1979 trophies for Single Of The Year “All The Gold In California”, Album Of The Year “Straight Ahead” and Male Vocalist Of The Year for Larry. To date, Larry and the brothers hold 36 Top 40 hits to their credit. Country classics like “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer To You)”, “Broken Lady”, “I Wish You Were Someone I Loved”, and

of course the aforementioned “All The Gold In California (is in a bank in somebody else’s name)” and so many more. Then on Saturday, July 4th with one show at 3pm, one of The Texas Opry Theater’s most popular singers returns for an annual appearance. Gene Watson is marking 53 years as one of our greatest living country vocalists. His ageless voice sounds exactly as it did when he first recorded in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Performances such as “Fourteen Carat Mind,” “Love In The Hot Afternoon,” “Farewell Party,” “Memories To Burn,” “Paper Rosie,” and so many more have forged Gene Watson’s reputation as a “Singer’s Singer.” He is the envy of his peers and the idol of such younger performers as Joe Nichols, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Lee Ann Womack and Randy Travis.

Sharing the opening credits with Luke will be Allen Hurt. Over the years, Allen’s music has gained airplay on radio stations throughout the US and Europe. Backing up Luke and Allen will be The Texas Opry’s own Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band with Roger Ramsey on bass, Christian Hutton on guitar, Josh Rodgers on drums and Dale Morris Jr. on fiddle. On July 22nd thru the 25th, The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band has been invited with Michael Hix to the Walters Dinner Theater in Ontario, Canada to share their amazing talents with our neighbors to the north.

Activities Health = Fitness + You + Nutrition (FUN)

Running versus Walking which is better for you?

There is much controversy surrounding the topic of running vs walking. There have been many studies done going back about ten years or more, concerning this debate. The results & findings of this research may surprise you. Running or jogging is no better than vigorous walking. Unless one is training specifically for long distance running (endurance) or sprinting (speed), then it is much better to walk. Both types of exercise have been shown to burn about the same amount of calories. The difference is that jogging takes a much greater toll on the body. The constant stress of pounding on pavement eventually wears out the knee/hip joints and spinal vertebrae causing lower back problems. Often lifetime runners have to resort to walking & joint replacement operations. There is also the issue of deep breathing the car exhaust & pollution while running, thus making it quite counterproductive. If you have to run, then try to do it on turf or a treadmill where there is somewhat of a shock absorber effect. Look around the natural world and you’ll discover that humans are the only species that run for long distances. Animals typically run only as a fight or flight response analogous to being a predator or prey. For example, white-tail deer only run when threatened in some fashion. Most of the time they walk and stand around, yet they are strong, trim and never obese. One should walk at a brisk pace of 4 mph, if possible. You’ll find that a longer pace, each individual step, is achieved by walking, which results in increased stretching & better flexibility. Walking up an incline like hills will work the legs and butt even more. The top overall recommendation from the comparative studies revealed that interval training is the best. This combines the two efforts of running and walking into one, as a short intense sprint is followed by walking then repeated several times. This can be performed by running for thirty seconds or one minute followed by an equivalent time of walking or slightly longer if needed. This is also known as exert and recover; a common strategy used in cycling. Only twenty minutes and three times a week will give very good cardio results while burning up the calories.

recently had a conversation with the vivacious Holly Robinson, owner of New 2 U Consignments and Furnishings. I was shocked to hear her employee refer to her as “Holly Jolly”. When I asked Holly about it she laughingly stated that each of them had a nickname at the store, for the purpose of making work fun. “I try to laugh at things. It is what is. Funny though, it was a nickname of mine when I was a kid.” Holly Robinson already had a lot on her plate as wife, mother, grandmother and professional organizer. But, she had another calling, not her childhood dream of running an orphanage, but to open the New 2 U consignment shop. When her clients found it difficult to part with the things they had collected from their past, she accepted the challenge on faith in November of 2011, and has been well rewarded. Instead of a million kids, she is thankful for those unanswered prayers, she now finds forever homes for orphaned furniture, décor, antiques and more.

contains multitudes of vignettes filled with antiques strategically placed for your shopping pleasure. There you can find collectibles, comics, dolls, hankies, corks, toys and jewelry. There is even candy--Razzles, Pop Rocks and taffy. The bigger store means you can purchase newly handmade, one-of-a kind items like soap, candles and crosses. You can even find complimentary refreshments, coffee and water along with the occasional treat, here and there. And, back by popular demand is the western and rustic area with more furniture and décor. There is now a colorful outdoor furniture and yard art patio. The most impressive is the 2,000

New 2 U Consignments and Furnishings opened with a mere 500 square feet and within the first month expanded to 1500 square feet and now occupies more than 5,000 square feet. The main entry of the store 16 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Once again proving herself to be a savvy business woman, Holly aligned the store with its very own Facebook page. People can shop online and then fifteen minutes later show up at the store and make their purchases. As Holly puts it, “(FB) has been huge for business, especially for the more rare items.”

Not one to let anything go to waste, she also conducts TRADE DAYS where quarterly she offers outdoor spaces for $25.00. You will need to wear your best walking shoes, because combined with the store you are looking at 7,000 square feet of shopping ecstasy. Holly also made a strategic move when she added U-Haul. She had no plans to buy the building or to add U-Hau,l but after several talks with her friend and mentor, owner of Sugar & Spice, things just fell into place. “I had no idea I’d be here, running a U-Haul, but it just walked in the door and has been a huge blessing.” The new, New 2 U Consignments and Home Furnishings is located at 311 Western Hills Trail, just around the bend from their former location. They accept new merchandise by appointment on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 11:00-3:00. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Trade Days are announced via email

and website so join the mail list soon or check the website regularly. Do not forget about their Facebook page, you don’t want to miss a thing! www.facebook.com/ new2udecor “I believe that God has lead me here. I think he has something great planned so I will follow where he leads me.” Holly is a ball of energy and has an infectious laugh with a deep seeded faith that has guided her every step of the way. She even made her store a drop off location for the Toys for Tots campaign because, ‘every child deserves a toy at Christmas.’ Her husband bought them an RV because as he has told her on several occasions, the only time he sees her sit and do nothing is when they take the RV and go somewhere to just hang out.
