Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine It’s July Happy Birthday America!! This 4th of July we celebrate America’s 239th Birthday. What an amazing 239 years it has been for the United States. From the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to present day, America’s accomplishments have been numerous and ongoing. The 20th century in this country was littered with achievements: the Wright brothers first flight in 1903, the Model T Ford in 1908, the invention of the modern submarine in 1900, the building of the Panama Canal in 1914, color television in 1940, the world’s first nuclear reactor in 1942, Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon in 1969, the invention of the cell phone in 1973, the advent of the internet around 1985, and the list goes on and on. We’ve accomplished so much in a relatively short period of time…who knows what the future holds?
Here, in our little part of the country, we celebrate America’s birthday with a BANG!! Granbury holds its annual Old Fashioned 4th of July on the historic downtown square July 3rd through the 5th. Music, arts and crafts and food vendors will be around all three days. The 4th ends with a spectacular fireworks show over Lake Granbury and the Brazos Drive In will be open for a special showing of “Jurassic World” that evening.
Glen Rose Chamber and Glen Rose CVB present 4th of July Spectacular at Wheeler Branch Reservoir on July 4. Gates open at 7 am, county residents, $4, children, $2, and non-residents, $8. FREE admission starts at 7 pm. There will be live music starting at 3 pm with Giovanni Yanez, Whiskey Gus at 5 pm and the Mike Daniels Band at 7 pm. The fireworks show is at 9:30 and a post concert at 10 pm.
The City of Hudson Oaks and the East Parker County Chamber of Commerce will, once again, host “Boomin’ 4th” at Gene L. Voyles Park in Hudson Oaks from 6 to 10 p.m. Fireworks start at 9:15p.m. and your family will enjoy the Kids Korner, face painting, food vendors, arts and crafts and a FUNtastic photo booth before the evenings big bang!
No matter where your family celebrates America’s special day there’s sure to be no shortage of fun and fireworks. Just check out our Calendar of Events for the birthday bash nearest you. Here’s to you America – to your remarkable past and your bright future!!

SIZZLING FILMS IN JULY Just when you think you’re maxed out on big blockbuster films in June, brace yourself for some exceptional movies headed your way in the sizzling month of July. During these times of soaring temperatures and outdoor activities, make sure you also find your way into a darkened and cool movie theater for some perfect summer films! July doesn’t waste much time jumping head first in to some massive attention-grabbing movies. Up first is the much-anticipated (to some) sequel to Magic Mike. Magic Mike XXL will be hitting theatres nationwide on July1 and will no doubt be a fan favorite among the ladies. Picking up the story three years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, Magic Mike XXL finds the remaining Kings of Tampa likewise ready to throw in the towel. But they want to do it their way: burning down the house in
Opening the same day is another sequel, this time for the guys out there. Terminator: Genisys brings back the Ah-nold… that’s right folks, the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to the role that made him once again. The Terminator franchise launched in 1984 with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character and spanned three subsequent films, which have earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission. Not all July releases will be huge box office draws, and we expect one in particular to be a sleeper hit, meaning that it will not do well on opening day, but will become a favorite among DVD sales and rentals. PAPER TOWNS is a coming-ofage story centering on Quentin and his enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so much she became one. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears-leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. The search leads Quentin and his quick-witted friends on an exhilarating adventure that is equal parts hilarious and moving. Ultimately, to track down Margo, Quentin must find a deeper understanding of true friendship--and true love. The end of July could see perhaps it’s biggest draw yet, opening July 31st and starring the unflappable Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation will be one of the biggest hits of the summer. Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate – an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF. Ethan Hunt’s
highly effective but destructive Impossible Mission Force (IMF) has been disbanded by vengeful Washington bureaucrats such as the CIA chief (played by Alec Baldwin). But Hunt pulls his team together (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and newcomer Rebecca Ferguson) to battle the shadowy force known as “The Syndicate” and its elusive leader (Sean Harris). This is the fifth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Art Pamela’s images are created on an emotional level celebrating the spirit and beauty of the American West. “Capturing the life and spirit, the power of motion and the beauty of the moment is what is important most in my images. While capturing romance and the allure of the cowboy culture which is my choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fueled by an impetuous desire to partake in the stories that unfold around me.”

The Drowsy Chaperone
The
Director, Phil Groeschel
Drowsy Chaperone is an homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them. The ‘Man in Chair’, (played by Xan Cramer) a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his “nonspecific sadness”, listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to this rare recording, he is transported (from modern day) into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes.

THEATRE OFF THE SQUAREIN WEATHERFORD proudly presents their annual children’s production, Monster in the Closet, by Angela D. Stewart and produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc. This production, in conjunction with Theatre Off The Square’s Summer Children’s Theatre Camp, is directed by Marilyn Sanderson, with Edwina Himes as Assistant Director. Laurie Jones and Jaclyn Justice serve as Camp Directors. This show begins Friday, July 17 and runs two weekends through July 26. Emily has a big problem. Not only is she sent to bed just as she reaches the highest level of her new video game, but there’s a monster in her closet! It’s not just her imagination because her friend Stephanie saw it, too. What they don’t know is that Murray, the closet monster, doesn’t mean any harm — he only wants to play Emily’s new video game. With wonderfully entertaining characters, the solution to Emily’s monster problem brings humor, a bit of ingenuity, and a little magic to this charming and delightful family show.
Members of the cast are the 35 plus kids who attend the theatre’s 2-week camp. Helpers during the camp, who also serve as the crew for the production, are members of several high school and college Theatre Departments. T
he Texas Opry Theater is hosting concerts by some of the biggest names in the traditional country music field in Weatherford this summer. Saturday, July 4th with only one show at 3pm, one of The Texas Opry Theater’s most popular singers returns for an annual appearance. Gene Watson is marking 53 years as one of our greatest living country vocalists. His ageless voice sounds exactly as it did when he first recorded in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Performances such as “Fourteen Carat Mind,” “Love In The Hot Afternoon,” “Farewell Party,” “Memories To Burn,” “Paper Rosie,” and so many more have forged Gene Watson’s reputation as a “Singer’s Singer.” He is the envy of his peers and the idol of such younger performers as Joe Nichols, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, Lee Ann Womack and Randy Travis. Opening the show for Gene Watson is up and coming singer/songwriter Luke Robinson. Luke began performing regularly on Johnnie High’s Country Music Revue. Luke achieved success on the Texas Country charts with top 30’s singles “That’s What I Tell Myself” & “Tequila Sheila” of the CD “Bad Luck”.
with Luke will be Allen Hurt. Over the years, Allen’s music has gained airplay on radio stations throughout the US and Europe. His career has crossed paths with music legends such as Ray Price, who Allen toured with and has shared the stage for many years, along with other greats like Don Williams, Bobby Bare, Del McCoury and his long time mentor Porter Wagoner.

hot days of summer are just about upon us. So what do you do when the sun scorches down with temperatures ranging from 90 degrees on up? Get to the nearest body of water. There are numerous choices between Granbury and Glen Rose. Granbury City Beach Park – located at 623 W. Pearl St. just off Business 377 in Granbury. There is no fee required and it is open all year 5 am to 11 pm daily. The Granbury City Beach is a great place to walk around and enjoy the scenery. The Boardwalk goes out over the lake, the swimming is carefree, and there are also kayak rentals available. Lake Granbury has its own white sandy beach at the City Beach Park that is perfect for swimming and picnicking. The white sand was mined from right here in Granbury, once the site of a Cretaceous Age beach. The beach park also includes a spray park,
GRANBURY HOTEL/MOTEL Best Western
SUP/volleyball/bicycle concessionaire, and thatched roof picnic pavilions available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The “Blue Hole” at Dinosaur Valley State Park – located on Park Road 59 off US Hwy 67 and CR 205 in Glen Rose. This is a wonderfully deep sinkhole at a bend in the Paluxy River. The “blue hole”, located just past the entrance to the park, is the best place for swimming in the park. The water depth measures from only 1’ to over 20’, right next to the dinosaur tracks. Natural springs keep the pool full year round. Residents of Somervell County have been swimming in this
refreshing natural pool since the late 1800s; even before the dinosaur tracks were found. Channel catfish or bluegill fish are found in the hole. The area around the hole contains wellpreserved tracks of Theropodsfrom Greek meaning “beasts feet”. The Paluxy River flows through the park and is great for wading and viewing dinosaur tracks. State Park fees: $7 for adults, children 12 and under free. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. http://tpwd.texas. gov/state-parks/dinosaur-valley Check this site daily for water conditions and to see if tracks are visible.
Big Rocks Park – located just outside downtown Glen Rose on Barnard St., (Hwy 144) Free access and parking. Gates open 8 am to 10 pm. The name is derived from the multitude of large limestone rocks and boulders that have been gracefully rounded and chiseled into shape by centuries of flowing water from the Paluxy River. These rocks provide excellent sunbathing, rock hopping, even small cave exploring opportunities and access to the clear water of the Paluxy River for swimming and wading. Cautions for parents: toddlers should never be left unattended. Small crevices and chasms can house all kinds of critters like snakes, so be careful. The Brazos & Paluxy Rivers – Glen Rose is available for tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. These rivers are generally slow moving, flat-water rivers. This means there are very few rapids

if any in normal conditions. There are sandbars in some areas as well. The Paluxy River is currently navigable, but it is not always suitable for tubing and canoeing. On the Brazos River, water is very good, but most sections are dependent on water released from Lake Granbury. Therefore the river will often become very low (and slow) in late summer. Right now, with recent rains, there should be ample water. The prettiest sections are nearest to Possum Kingdom Lake, but overall the entire river is majestically scenic. For rentals: Rhodes Canoe Rental 254-8974214 or Low Water Bridge 254897-3666 and to check on river conditions.
If you are not up to battling nature, there are a couple of wonderful swimming pools in the area:

Closed Mondays for maintenance, open TuesdaySunday 11 am-7 pm. It boasts 330,000 gallons of water with a diving board, slide and a waterspewing fountain. The Dana Vollmer Municipal Swim Center located at 301 North Park Street in Granbury. The pool is closed on Mondays for maintenance and open Tuesday 1 6 pm; Wednesday-Friday 1 - 6:30 pm; Saturday 1 - 7 pm and Sunday 1 - 6 pm. $5.00 general admission, *2.00 discounts if you bring a copy of your City of Granbury water bill. Flexibility Remember when you could bend over and touch your toes? Once upon a time (youthfulness) everyone had good flexibility and could move in any direction at any time without restriction. You didn’t even need to stretch prior to bending, twisting, jumping, throwing, etc. Well this is another one of those ‘use it or lose it’ principles that aging presents to each of us. By learning proper stretching techniques, most people can restore mobility, flexibility & strength to their bodies & improve their quality of life. Most people don’t stretch at all or do very little of the variety of stretches available, nor do they hold stretches long enough. One should always stretch & warm up prior to any physical activity, if at all possible. Unfortunately, many golfers have learned to stretch only after injuring themselves and undergoing physical therapy rehabilitation. We need to learn stretching techniques to keep from ever having to go to rehab, instead of learning it there after injuring ourselves! It has been estimated that over 90% of the population will suffer lower back problems in their lifetimes, often resulting in a chronic condition. Stretching consists of static and dynamic movements, and it is best to address both concepts. Static stretching means holding a position, without movement, for a certain length of time. Thirty seconds has been determined to be the optimal time for holding any stretch position. Any shorter amount of time will not help to lengthen the muscle and increase flexibility. Conversely, any longer time doesn’t provide much additional benefit. Dynamic stretching is all about movement which increases flexibility with a bonus of strength gain possible. This variation is most often accomplished with the use of cables, springs or rubber bands, like bungee cords. The bands maintain a constant resistance to the muscle throughout the entire range of motion, thus increasing flexibility & strength simultaneously. It is critically important to always stretch through your entire range of motion so that this distance will keep increasing with each future session. Most, if not all stretches should be performed lying down. For example, never stand upright and bend over to stretch your lower back & hamstrings-the back of the leg muscle. Perform this correctly in a supine position while bringing each straight leg upright or with a bent leg for a quadricep (front thigh) stretch. Do each leg and then both together. Any leg or back stretching should always be done lying down on the floor, a bed/couch or even a suspended apparatus like a hammock. The Zero Gravity Lift® includes instructional DVD‘s & manuals, is ideal for all of the aforementioned activities plus more and is available at SpellBound.

DINING
When you think Low and Slow, Texas Style BBQ, you think high quality, succulent, juicy, pristine, and one of a kind meat. Their meat is hand selected and trimmed to perfection. Every one of their meats, from the brisket to the turkey, are prepared in house and cooked under constant supervision. Over the years the family had many BBQs at their home. So, they thought why not let everyone in on how delicious and flavorful a family style BBQ could be. That’s when they decided to throw their hat into the restaurant ring. After weeks of looking, they finally found a small place that was just right for their first family style restaurant. Darrel says, “We knew our dreams would come true, or vision was clear, and that this was going to be the start of it all.” They found the perfect location at 8700 W. Highway 377 in Tolar. The restaurant is open Mon-Thur. 11:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. and Fri-
Sat 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. or till they run out of meat.
LOCAL DINING LISTING
For their many choices of meats, (Brisket, Sausage, Ribs, Pulled Pork, Turkey) Low and Slow is the motto. Smoked 8-14 hours every day, they use the best of the best Oak, plus a little Hickory. No electrical machines or gas-powered hog traps are used. They prefer to use all wood the way BBQ was meant to be prepared. The smoker they use was custom built by R & O Smokers.
HOOD/SOMERVELL COUNTY
People really love the food. Shawn Scott had this to say on his Facebook post, “I must say, I am quite biased when it comes to BBQ because my grandpa was over Pinky’s in Lubbock, but this is good stuff! One of the best that I have tried locally for sure!” It is basic goodness served with a smile. The menu reads very simply, BBQ, they have sides like mac and cheese and their own recipe of beans. You can find a daily special sandwich with chips and a drink for $6.95. After many requests they have included a hamburger on certain days. If you’re after a burger call to see what the day’s special is first, because it changes. If you are craving some carbs go for the loaded and smoked stuffed baked potato, you won’t regret it. It is a meal all on its own.
