SULTRY HEAT, THRILLER FILMS, AND CELEB BREAK-UPS
W
ell, it’s no secret that August in Texas is about as much fun as a root canal. Soaring temperatures, stifling heat, and humidity will make you fight for your next breath. The heat becomes so solidified in the air and can quickly turn the average delightful and chipper person into the most negative-filled Nancy around. (My apologies to any lovely August Nancy’s out there) So as Dolly Parton once said, “The best way to take your mind off your own troubles is to listen to someone else’s for a while”. I couldn’t agree more. So let’s start this off by acknowledging some pretty shocking celebrity break-ups. The recent split of Ben Affleck and
Jennifer Garner took Hollywood by complete and utter surprise. We are all reminded of Ben’s youthful and playboy’ish ways before he met and settled down with the more subdued, yet still lovable, Jennifer. After many years, three kids, and what seemed to be a loving and trusting relationship together, the couple has decided to separate. However, they are determined to stay close to each other and lovingly co-parent their children together. Heck, they even bought a house together after the separation. Take note Hollywood! Not to be outdone, a Nashville super-couple and country music royalty Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert floored the entire country last week with the news of their divorce. What seemingly was a relationship built in the heavens, apparently had quite a few thunderstorms. While cheating rumors and scandals surround the divorce in headlines, both parties have remained quiet and remained amicable towards each other on social media. Blake Shelton is a set fixture in country music radio and also co-hosts the very popular tv show “The Voice”. Lambert is a mega-hit maker and the most decorated and award-winning female country artist of all time! Sort of puts you in mind of George Jones and Tammy Wynette, doesn’t it?

Okay, okay…enough of the relationship woes of the rich and famous. Let’s get down to the real oddity of August this year. Horror films. When did it become the norm to put out scary films in the middle of blazing heat? Maybe it is the “wretched” heat? Or possibly the “killer” humidity? Who knows. Sit back, enjoy the cool break and enjoy the thrillers. The Gift opens August 7th. Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo (Joel Edgerton) at first, but after a seemingly coincidental series of encounters proves troubling, a horrifying secret from their past is uncovered after nearly 20 years. As Robyn learns the unsettling truth about what
happened between Simon and Gordo, she starts to question: how well do we really know the people closest to us, and are past bygones ever really bygones? Opening August 28th, Sinister 2 will have you holding the edge of your seats. In the aftermath of the shocking events in Sinister, a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life twins Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Buhguul continues to spread with frightening intensity. Of course, you’ll easily find the usual sprinkling of late summer superhero films, comedy, and loads of documentaries. Anything to get out of the heat! Am I right?! By: Jimmy Ray Sorrells

our Private Collection Art Gallery is so excited to announce that the beautiful works of Jordan Grimes will be able to be seen and celebrated in the gallery. Jordan Grimes has some of the most unique sculptures that pull you in and enchant you by their pure natural beauty and the story behind each creation. As a semi-pro hockey player, UNT graduate Jordan Grimes would sketch in a notebook while on the road. Upon
entering the College of Visual Arts and Design, Grimes’s art went from sketches to watercolor paintings, then to 3-D sculptures that fuse watercolor with items from nature and a tribute to Native Americans. For Grimes, the process to his sculpture, which combines watercolor painting and items from nature – wood, moss, insects – with cast images of people, started with his family history. Jordan said, “My work is inspired by the deep roots that

run through my family history involving the Native American culture and their beliefs. My ancestor, Cynthia Ann Parker, was an American child who was kidnapped at the age of nine by a Comanche war party. She would go on to fully assimilate herself into the Comanche tribe and live with them for the next 24 years and give birth to the famous Indian Chief Quanah Parker. Cynthia was “rescued” from her captors and spent final sad years refusing to re-enter her old form of life and would eventually die of a broken heart some would say. My sculptures are greatly influenced by this story and are a celebration of life and the Native American’s connection with nature and all things that reside in it.” Jordin’s artwork has gained strong recognition from juried art shows and well known galleries. Jordan
Grimes spectacular creations will be on exhibit at Your Private Collection Art Gallery in September 2015. Come and get lost in his magnificent artwork and the stories behind each brilliant creation. www.jordangrimes.com

HEATRE Off THE SQUARE’S children’s show this summer was produced in conjunction with their third annual Summer Children’s Theatre Camp. The camp was a huge success! The 40 plus children from Aledo, Benbrook, Fort Worth, Graham, Hudson Oaks, Poolville, Kennedale, Millsap, Saginaw, Springtown, Weatherford, and Willow Park ranged in age from 3rd grade to 9th grade. The theatre offered them a unique camp experience with classes pertaining to all aspects of theatre as well as the opportunity to experience the joys of performing live theatre. The campers, as well as volunteers from the Weatherford High School, Tarleton State University, Midwestern State University, and Texas State University theatre departments put together a production in two weeks. The campers then performed six performances of

n Saturday, August 8th at 3pm and 8pm, The Texas Opry will welcome Mr. Rose Colored Glasses, John Conlee. It has been over 10 years since John Conlee has performed in Weatherford at The Texas Opry Theater. John Conlee is a lot like the songs of which he sings. He lives a domestic life with his wife and family.
For the past two decades. John has achieved a level of success that he has sustained by simply being himself and by making records that the listening public can relate to. He is a gifted entertainer, but he is not into the glitz and hype of the entertainment world. He’d rather spend his “off the road” time working on his 32 acre farm outside of
www.myhometownstexas.com
With his big hits “Rose Colored Glasses”, “Backside of Thirty”, “Common Man”, “I Don’t Remember Loving You” and more, John Conlee, along with his long time band, have had 29 single releases with 26 in the top 20 and 8 as #1 on the coveted Country Music charts. John will sing all of them for you, and he is known for going into the audience interacting with questions and answers about his music and life. Appearing alongside John Conlee will be Miss Mandy Barnett. Mandy has been a well known Nashville singer since her childhood. Mandy portrayed Patsy Cline in 67 “Always...Patsy Cline” performances at the Ryman Auditorium earning universally rave reviews for the almosteerie way she brought the music and persona of Patsy Cline back to life. Performing in “Aways...”, opened many musical doors to Mandy, by earning her a nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year. Mandy has sung with many of the country music greats such as Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, and Kenny Chesney. Mandy has contributed vocals in motion pictures “Traveler”, “A Walk On The Moon”, “Space Cowboys”, “Election”, “Drop Dead Gorgeous”, “Crazy” and recently in the Sponge Bob Square Pants album, “The Best Day Ever”. Mandy tours nationally and internationally and is a frequent guest on the Grand Ole Opry. She reprised her role as “Patsy Cline” in the acclaimed production of “Always...” in 2009 in honor of the 15th anniversary of the Ryman’s extensive renovations and reopening, and then again
in 2011. Mandy currently has a Christmas CD “Winter Wonderland” and Country CD’s “Sweet Dreams and a tribute to Don Gibson “I Can’t Stop Loving You” available that showcases Mandy’s exquisite, powerful and spellbinding, soaring country torch voice. Tickets for all of these great shows are on sale now at The Texas Opry Theater’s office by calling 817-3411000 or online at www. texasoprytheater.com. T
he Dog Days of Summer is typically the hottest time of the summer. The name is derived from observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean. The period, July 3 to Aug. 11, extends from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun. In Texas, everything is bigger, bolder, and hotter and this summer is no exception. There is little escaping the rising thermometer aside from air conditioning. Or, is there? In Hood, Parker, Somervell, and the surrounding areas there are plenty of options and things to do to keep you cool.
There’s nothing better on a hot afternoon than an ice cream or frozen yogurt and in Parker County, you can chill with an ice-cold treat at Yogurt Story, the Malt Shop on Fort Worth
If you want a total escape try Hole n Fun in Weatherford. There you enter a darkened paradise of fun and games that glow-inthe-dark like golf, spin zone bumper cars and an arcade. You can even schedule birthday parties, best part, no clean up.
Highway, That Snowball Place in Aledo and Crave Frozen Yogurt in Hudson Oaks, with their ceiling tall wall of toppings, you will never get bored. Glen Rose brags about Frozen Yogurt Your Way. Shaved ice is always a treat and in Granbury you have a choice of Frigid Frog Shaved Ice and B n L’s Polar Ice Express both located on Hwy 377. Weatherford has a shaved ice icon, The Funky Munky on N. Elm with gourmet flavors like the Peach Jubilee made with fresh Parker County peaches.

And, don’t forget about your four-legged family member, who needs to stay cool too. Always, keep fresh water accessible to your pet, have them vaccinated against fleas, ticks etc., and never, ever leave your pet
alone in a hot car. There are lots of cafes that allow pets on their patios. Speaking of food, there are some foods that are hazardous to dogs: avocado, grapes & raisins, bread dough, chocolate and Ethanol (including grain and drinking alcohol). For a great treat, your dog can enjoy cantaloupe, green beans and peas, apples, blueberries and watermelon. As an added treat freeze chunks of their favorite fruit or you can puree the fruit and then freeze in ice trays. The dog days of summer do not have to be torture, and if
you remember your canine friend it can be safe and happy for everyone. By: Marie Valden

Vitamins & Nutrients -
I
witness much confusion of people shopping in the vitamin aisle. I’m going to help you get through the myriad options and select what’s the best for you. Many vitamin supplements do not contain what the label states or too little or too much. The website www.consumerlabs.com will tell you the exact analysis of any labeled product. Typically vitamins A & B don’t need to be taken separately, as both are contained in a ‘good’ multivitamin. Vitamin C is different & should be taken daily. Make sure it is ascorbic acid & not ‘ester C’. The ester, a base, is not the same as the acid and will not be absorbed in your body the same way. All naturally occurring vitamin C, in fruits & vegetables is the acid form. Typically a 500mg dose or less taken twice a day in the morning and evening is sufficient. Never take all of your daily selection of vitamins at one time; it is much more preferable to consume them over the course of the day. I take some at breakfast, some others at lunch and the rest with supper.
Vitamin D3, the correct form and not D1 or D2, has often been called the most important of all, especially for those who don’t receive enough sunlight to activate its synthesis in their skin. The lack of ‘D’ has now been linked to many health issues. A blood serum test will accurately measure the amount in your system and compare it to a suggested concentration range- most people have low levels. You may then need a daily 1000-2000 I.U. supplement. Vitamin E should only be taken as the naturally occurring form, d-alpha tocopherol, and nothing else. All other versions are cheaper to manufacture synthesized versions and are not utilized by the human body in the same manner. Do not even get the mixed ‘dl alpha’ version- it is not the same! Co Q-10 is an important supplement for heart health. Ubiquinol is not the same as what occurs in nature and is a synthesized form like the ester example. Don’t be fooled by the marketing claims and always stay with the way nature made it!
[
Activities When evaluating nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, etc., always select the organic form and never the oxide or carbonate. The organic is identified by the words: citrate, gluconate or something similar. The inorganic oxides and carbonates are not absorbed the same as the organics. For example, the calcium in dairy is organic and is easily metabolized. The calcium oxide is really lime & the carbonate is chalk/limestone. Neither are good and only waste your money & time while passing through your system doing nothing. A while ago a product called ‘coral calcium’ from Okinawa was all the rage, unfortunately, it was all market hype, false product claims and eventually was pulled from the market. There are so many other supplements out there that can’t be discussed in this short article. If you have any questions about others, then please let me know and I’ll answer them for you.
