Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine It’s September – Is that Autumn in the Air? September – just the word brings to mind all sorts of joyous occasions! School is back in full swing; certainly a cause of celebration for parents of school age youngsters, and the heat of an oppressive August is behind us; definitely something to lift the spirits of everyone. The distinctive smell of autumn is just beginning to tickle our noses in the cool night breeze and, if you close your eyes and take a whiff, your nose might pick up another scent as well… is that popcorn and funnel cake I smell? Area fall festivals and celebrations are getting ready to kick into high gear as September approaches, so hang on readers – My Hometowns Texas will help you maneuver your way through the myriad of fun fall events. First up is The Queen’s Tea and Luncheon, hosted by Weatherford’s Chandor Gardens. Wednesday, September 9, 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning British monarch in history and the folks at Chandor Gardens will be celebrating this historic occasion by offering free scones and tea from 10a.m. to 3p.m. and $1 admission to the Gardens, for any guest wearing a large or fanciful hat, all day long. You can also reserve a spot for lunch that day by calling Kelli Hamilton at (817) 374-2697.
On view in the parlor of the mansion at the Gardens will be a lithograph of Douglas Chandor’s coronation portrait of the Queen painted in 1952. Next, the Granbury Square will be the site for Biker Bash Texas on September 5-7. Full Armor Fellowship Church is the show promoter and the event includes food, country cruise bike rides, drawings, giveaways, twenty one bands, a kidz zone, custom bike shows, the top Texas picker guitar player contest, lots of bikes and lots of fun! This September marks the eleventh rip-roaring year for the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse Ranch Rodeo. The rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday, the 11th and 12th and the Rodeo Parade will take place on Saturday morning at 9 am. Sixteen ranch teams compete on Friday night all leading up to the show down Saturday night for the win! This year they’ve added a few new events: ladies trailer loading, ranch bronc and Shetland riding along with mutton bustin’. Entertainment will be provided after the rodeo both Friday and Saturday nights. Friday night features Walker and the Texas Dangers and Saturday’s live performance will be by Jake Hooker and The Outsiders. Concessions are available throughout the weekend and a Chuck Wagon Supper will be served Saturday evening. For additional information you

“COOL” DOWN WITH SEPTEMBER FILMS As we finally get a break from the triple digit temperatures outside, September promises some uniquely “cool” films for moviegoers inside this season. The Transporter Refueled is a must for the guys out there. This adventure/action sequel is packed to the gills with excitement and visual awesomeness. Yes, that’s a guy word. In The Transporter Refueled, the stakes are higher but the same three rules apply this time around: Never change the deal. No names. Never open the package. Frank Martin (played by newcomer Ed Skrein), a former special-ops mercenary, is now living a less perilous life - or so he thinks - transporting classified packages for questionable people. When Frank’s father (Ray Stevenson) pays him a visit in the
south of France, their father-son bonding weekend takes a turn for the worse when Frank is engaged by a cunning femmefatale, Anna (Loan Chabanol), and her three seductive sidekicks to orchestrate the bank heist of the century. Frank must use his covert expertise and knowledge of fast cars, fast driving and fast women to outrun a sinister Russian kingpin, and worse than that, he is thrust into a dangerous game of chess with a team of gorgeous women out for revenge. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will be out nationwide on September 19th. Based on the second book in the four-novel series written by James Dashner, this sequel will continue the journey already set in place. Aidan Gillen will play Janson, who becomes the main antagonist of the Maze Runner books. He is also referred to as Rat-Man. In this next chapter of the epic “Maze Runner” saga, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers face their greatest challenge yet: searching for clues about the mysterious and powerful organization known as WCKD. Their journey takes them to the Scorch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the Gladers take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and uncover its shocking plans for them all. Okay, okay… enough of the guy

flicks, I hear ya. How about a good thriller film? The Perfect Guy opens on September 11th and is a guaranteed psychological delight. Leah Vaughn (Sanaa Lathan) appears to have the ideal life. She enjoys a challenging, fastpaced career as a lobbyist; Dave (Morris Chestnut), her long-term boyfriend loves her. And yet, at 36, she’s ready to move to the next phase. Marriage and a family seem a logical and welcome step. Dave is not so sure. A bit commitment phobic, his misgivings lead to a painful break up. Enter Carter Duncan (Michael Ealy), a handsome, charming stranger whose path keeps crossing with Leah’s. Caring and solicitous of Leah and her family and friends, their relationship rapidly progresses. It seems Leah has met the perfect guy. But, if it seems too good to be true... Soon Carter’s protective nature morphs
into something more sinister. It’s clear Leah has to end this new relationship and when she does, her onetime lover becomes her ultimate enemy. It will take every bit of her cunning and resolve to escape and outwit him. If thrill and horror is not your cup of tea this early Fall, be sure to check out the comedies The Intern, and Ashby. You may even be surprised by a new western film The Keeping Room, in select theaters only.

Its back to school time! Natalie Hansen and Arlene Shelton are setting the canvas for a great year for local ninth grade students. These woman will inspire your hearts and minds as they are inspiring our future artists this year.
Natalie Hansen a Weatherford Ninth Grade Art & Photography teacher, is fascinated with all things old, rusty, & falling apart. “No two things erode in the same way and it makes
my photographs unique.” Natalie pushes her students to find the beauty in the ordinary objects and look at things differently. “Being in the art room and teaching students to be creative is the BEST job in the world. It truly challenges me as an educator and I strive to find ways for students to unlock their potential within the visual arts. I gather my best ideas from being a connected educator on various social media outlets.” Natalie’s students have access to technology to publish their work and connect with a global audience. This year
Arlene Shelton, is a Daniel Ninth Grade teacher in Aledo. In addition to being a teacher and an artist, Arlene has recently published a book in collaboration with 50 other art teachers from around the nation titled “If Picasso Went To The Zoo”. A collection of poems and illustrations with history, biology, international cultures, zoology, rhyme, alliteration, and art! During Arlene’s high school career she fell in love with the creative process. After obtaining a BFA in Art from The University of Texas at Arlington. Arlene decided to become an art teacher so that she might help others to find their creative spirit as well. “My first step into a public high school art room was during my observation in college, I had attended parochial school and had no idea that the culture of our public schools would lack enthusiasm.” Consequently, Arlene took on a mantra based on the Antoine de Saint- Exupery
quote, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” Arlene is always thinking of ideas to inspire fellow educators and students, one of the reasons she started#K12ArtChallenge on Twitter. As we move steadily to the beginning of a new school year, #k12ArtChallenge will be sharing more creative challenges that we can bring into the classroom. Ultimately, it is our future society which is in need of creative thinkers. These challenges will allow us to
inspire fearless creative thought within our future generations so that our future will be rich with scientists, inventors, designers, artist and explorers who will help us to respond to the complex problems of our world in unique ways!
she started her classes with a music video “renegades” by X Ambassadors. Saying she wanted her students to be pioneers, renegades, rebels, and challenge the standards of what is expected from them. I want my students to see differently, think differently, ask questions, be problem solvers. You can find Natalie’s work on Instagram @nattpalm

Activities Health = Fitness + You + Nutrition (FUN) Seven suggestions for better nutritional health ONE: EAT FAR LESS SUGAR You should cut down on all types of sweeteners. High-fructose corn syrup is neither better nor worse than the rest. Ditch flour-based foods such as breads, cakes, cookies, pancakes, and pretzels. Eschew deep-fried food. It’s easier than it sounds. The longer you avoid this junk, the less you desire it. Carbohydrates are unhealthy when eaten in large quantities despite the fact that various versions of the Agriculture Department’s food pyramid have instructed us to eat six–11 servings of them per day. When the average person goes out for fast food he worries about the “unhealthy” beef in his 3-ounce-cooked-weight burger and fails to process the fact that the huge bun of quick-digesting grain is the real healthdestroyer in the meal. From cereal for breakfast to sandwiches for lunch to pasta for dinner, grains are the centerpiece of every meal -- and we pay the price with our health and, ultimately, our lives. TWO: INCREASE YOUR CONSUMPTION OF VEGGIES Go for five–nine servings daily. THREE: EAT HEALTHFUL ANIMAL-BASED FOODS OFTEN -AT LEAST TWO MEALS DAILY These include pasture-raised beef, pork, chicken, eggs, and wild-caught fish. Also, don’t be afraid of organ meats. You should try to eat these twice a month. Did you know calf liver is the most nutrient-dense food you can buy? Google the phrase “artery-clogging saturated fat” and you’ll get back 65,000 results. Pry open the top few hits and you’ll find pearls like ‘butter contains a lot of artery-clogging saturated fat’ and ‘chicken is permeated with inherent artery-clogging saturated fat similar to beef. There’s only one minor problem with pronouncements like this:They are absolutely, categorically false. The low-sat-fat, high-carb mandate is the most damnable scientific fraud ever perpetrated on the American public. It’s responsible for four nightmarish decades of spiraling obesity, diabetes, and cancers. From the beginning, the science has been shaky at best, but the directive got traction because it was a gold mine for the industrial food complex. Grain -- which yields high-fructose corn syrup and polyunsaturated soybean oil -- is dirt-cheap to grow, harvest, process, store, and sell, especially GMO versions cultivated via herbicide-intensive “no-till” agriculture. It’s made even cheaper once you throw in all the government subsidies. This myth also had the extraordinary advantage of sounding sensible. After all, dump a pan of bratwurst grease down your kitchen sink and it forms a clog. Surely, the same logic applies to your arteries too, right? Wrong. Your body is optimized to consume saturated fat. Our ancestors avoided hunting lean animals and gorged on sat-fat of their dinnertime bison. Meals like that directed their evolution, and we inherited their genes. Saturated fat, whether from your last meal or your love handles, flows in the bloodstream safely within lipoproteins. And lipoproteins don’t randomly “stick” to artery walls. Instead, they adhere in response to inflammation, which is often caused by overeating the aforementioned grains, corn syrup, and seed oils. In the absence of these inflammatory agents, not only are lipoproteins safe, but they can actually remove plaques from arterial walls.

Thought to have been initiated in Paris France in the 1800’s, a flea market is a facility that rents space to anyone that offers for sale to the general public merchandise, products, items, services and all other legal needs of the buying public. These renters are known as vendors. Flea markets are a world wide business that have been around for hundreds of years and have never been and probably
never will be truly defined. Regardless of the origin or the definition of flea markets, I have never heard of anyone who did not love to go to them. Here, in North Texas, we have an abundant supply of flea markets and antique shops with a wide variety of merchandise to entice the treasure hunter in us all. From

The eclectic shop is home to an abundance of vintage finds and the owners collaborate throughout the year with other proud members of the “junk society” to produce some of the greatest shows around. Tangled Tinsel, a crazy collaboration by the team over at Junk Society, will be held December 4-5. Continued from page 14 From the start, a few brave researchers argued that the science did not support the anti-sat-fat blather, but it took 33 years for the final word to come out. Subsequent research has made it clear: The real culprits in raising heart disease risk are sugar, flour, and oxidized seed oils (like the weeks-old soy oil boiling in a fastfood deep fryer). These are what create inflammation, promote obesity, and increase the risk of a wide variety of cancers. FOUR: EAT FRUIT AND NUTS, BUT SPARINGLY Pretty self-explanatory.

SIX: POUR THAT CANOLA, SOYBEAN, SAFFLOWER, AND CORN OILS DOWN THE DRAIN. Use extra virgin olive oil for salads and virgin coconut oil, butter, and non-hydrogenated lard for cooking. The low-fat health craze also sparked the rise of vegetable oils. Researchers -- well intentioned or otherwise -- determined that traditional cooking fats like butter and lard were sure to lead to heart disease and should be replaced by “healthier” options like corn, soy, canola, and safflower oils. The truth is vegetable oils are disastrous for your health, particularly when used for deep-frying. When heated, these polyunsaturated oils oxidize, rendering them highly inflammatory -- and chronic, elevated, whole-body inflammation underlies a host of diseases ranging from cancers to Alzheimer’s to cardiovascular conditions. To make things worse, the USDA successfully blocked early papers and research warning against the use of hydrogenated oils. They were simply too profitable for food manufacturers -- far cheaper to produce than lard, tallow, or butter; tasteless but palatable; and, because they are relatively inert, a great aid in helping to prolong the shelf life of baked goods and other processed foods. SEVEN: DEVELOP A TASTE FOR BITTER FOODS Try selections such as radicchio and dandelion greens. Try alcohol-extracted “bitters” that contain great yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea). Chemicals in these foods moderate blood sugar and optimize digestion. They also cut appetite, helping with weight control. This is the diet your body -- including your arteries -- truly needs. You’ll be delighted by how it makes you look and feel.
H = FUN
It’s the equation for life! The author Rock & his wife Tammy are the owners of ‘SpellBound’, the store on the north side of the square. Feel free to stop in anytime & ask Doc Roc anything you’d like to know.
Dining that faces the street. “ It’s the perfect place to watch the parades that roll down Main Street four or five times a year,” say the owners. The Shepherds also plan on providing live music on the patio in the future. The building has been painted charcoal grey and only the classic DQ shape gives away its former identity.
Shep’s Place – Gastropub American Restaurant For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term “gastropub” it simply means a bar and restaurant that serves high-end beer and food; which is exactly what the new Weatherford eatery, Shep’s Place, is all about. John and Jennifer Shepherd have just opened their latest venture in classic American food that pairs perfectly with draft beers and other beverages, and the spot they’ve chosen for the restaurant is as unique and delightfully quirky as their menu.
Make your way to Weatherford and enjoy its newest culinary offering. As a satisfied customer said, “Excellent food, great atmosphere, cool place to hang out, drink some craft beer and play some table Donkey Kong.” And, who knows, you might even get to watch a parade! 816 S. Main St. Weatherford, Texas (817) 653-5752 Open: Monday – Saturday 11a.m. to 10p.m.
DINING
The old Dairy Queen building on South Main, out of business for several years and quickly becoming an urban eye sore, has been transformed by the Shepherd’s into a state of the art restaurant with an industrial but homey feel. The original brick and wood have been exposed and the floor, once covered with tile, taken back to concrete. Inside is a large bar and dining area that boasts several table Donkey Kong games and outside a patio area has been installed
Shep’s Place menu consists of a variety of specialty sandwiches, gourmet hot dogs, burgers, salads and appetizers, an array of craft beers, wine and other beverages. The food is inventive and delicious featuring such items as: the “Spicy Oink”, a scrumptious hot dog with a kick; the Presbaugh Burger; a wonderful Caprese pressed sandwich; homemade Humus with Plantain Chips; and, my favorite appetizer, Parker’s Fried Pickles! “The burgers were the best in town and the service was perfect,” raved a recent customer who attended the Shepherd’s soft opening the end of August. “The creative menu, extensive craft beer selection, and fun atmosphere will make Shep’s Place “the” gathering spot in Weatherford.”
