December – Season of Peace, Joy and Mistletoe! Have you ever wondered how mistletoe came to be a part of your holidays? Well, I was thinking about it recently and decided to look it up. Evidently, the idea originated in the ancient times of the Druids: whenever enemies met under the mistletoe in the forest, they had to lay down their arms and observe a truce until the next day. From this came the custom of hanging a ball of mistletoe from the ceiling and exchanging kisses under it as a sign of friendship and goodwill.
In the 18th Century, the exchanging of kisses between a man and a woman was adopted as a promise to marry. At Christmas, a young lady standing under a ball of mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed. The kiss could mean deep romance, lasting friendship, or goodwill. It was believed that if the girl remained un-kissed, she could not expect to marry the following year. Mistletoe was thought to be sacred by ancient Europeans; they thought it held miraculous healing powers. In fact, in the Celtic language mistletoe means “all-heal”. It not only cured diseases, but could also render poisons harmless, make humans and animals prolific, keep one safe from witchcraft, and protect houses from ghosts. It was also
thought to bring good luck to anyone privileged to have it. This humble plant, really an aerial parasite that has no roots of its own and lives off the tree that it attaches itself to, is thought to be the emblem of love which conquers death. What could be more fitting as a symbol for the Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ the Savior? In the spirit of the holidays and mistletoe, let’s all take time this season to count our many blessings and be especially thankful for the wonderful friends and family in our lives; just as the mistletoe depends on the tree for its survival we depend on each other for our own. From all of us at My Hometowns Texas, thank you for your support and encouragement over the years - without you we would not survive. Happy Holidays!

of Fall. Yes sir, the end is near and it’s going out with the biggest bang of the year…with the most anticipated film of the year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
SANTA, SASS AND STAR WARS GIVES US THE END OF 2015 Oh what a delightful year it has been for moviegoers. From the onslaught of sci-fi at new year’s beginnings to the drama and romance flicks of spring, the roaring laughter of summer’s comedies to the horror and delight
In case you’re not a Star Wars fan and have just recently popped up from that rock, Star Wars is a huge – nay, massive, colossal, ginormous, (ok, ok) American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away”, following the main story of Anakin Skywalker and his son Luke. The franchise has been the most successful and most followed in cinematic history. Actually, I don’t know if that is true or not, but one can never over-stress the importance of Star Wars in the human psyche. In the hotly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the beginning of a new Star Wars trilogy will take place 30
years after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The new films will feature “a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces” (per StarWars.com). A massive nerd alert should be expected for the entire month of December. Alrighty, let’s get to what is really going on in December – the holiday of course! We know you’re expecting the annual holiday comedy to come to theaters, and you are correct. Christmas Eve opens on December 4th and is not your usual take on holiday films. In this family comedy produced by Larry King, a power outage traps six groups of New Yorkers in elevators on Christmas Eve where they find that laughter, romance, and a little bit of faith will get them through--and change their lives in unexpected ways. Not a fan of sci-fi and Christmas movies give you too much of a sugary-sweet headache? Then
you’re in luck! Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is just the ticket you need. Mindless, child-like fun chock-full guaranteed snickers and giggles, opening Wednesday, December 23rd. Through a series of misunderstandings, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come to believe that Dave is going to propose to his new girlfriend in Miami…and dump them. They have three days to get to him and stop the proposal, saving themselves not only from losing Dave but possibly from gaining a terrible stepbrother.

Art Aaron works are available in Granbury at Your Private Collection Art Gallery on the historical square. They are beautiful to see and art lovers have begun collecting his hand-blown works. While you are getting pieces as complex and beautiful as Dale Chihuly and Martin Blank designs, his works can be owned for a fraction of their prices. You will be amazed at his works at the Granbury gallery and the over 80 pieces on their website, yourprivatecollection.com. Works of this level are not often found in small towns so take advantage of the privilege of having them right here in this Texas hometown.

all began after an epiphany in the Sonoran Desert revealed a life of glassmaking. Aaron rapidly displayed an unusual facility with techniques and with his personal compositions. Throughout his early and then professional years, Aaron’s notable versatility would transcend any specific decorating style, and would contribute to his success as a glass sculptor. Aaron said, “Some of my pieces are happy and uplifting and others make one pensive and thoughtful. That is what the artist strives for, a personal response to a sculpture, an object, that evokes something from one’s personal experiences in this space-time. It’s so... personal - the viewing.” Aaron Thane Tate has been creating solid sculpted, blown and cast glass artworks for almost 20 years. His fine art sculptures and vessels are very unique in style and detail. Beginning in Arizona with Tom Philabaum, Aaron worked with numerous great glass artists including Dale Chihuly and Martin Blank in Seattle. While working with Chihuly Inc., Aaron was Starter

Aaron’s sculptural work is featured in collections around North America, Japan and Australia. We are VERY fortunate to have Aaron’s works in our area. That is how 91 year-old Evelyn Schmedt describes her reawakened interest in creating sketches and greeting cards after being dormant for many years. Although her ability to create quality sketches developed in childhood, that activity later took a backseat to more artistic endeavors in the 1970’s when she began
As is typical of Evelyn, her success has not provided financial enrichment for her. All proceeds from her works
As the years passed, Evelyn could no longer maintain the former pace of producing works in oil; especially after Harry’s passing. That began a long hiatus in artistic efforts that continued until she finally had to enter the Brookdale Assisted Living facility, formerly known as the Sterling House, in Weatherford. There she once again started sketching to help pass time.
are contributed to the trust fund established by the residents of the Brookdale Community to do good works in Weatherford. For example, each Christmas Manna Store House provides the residents with the name of a deserving family to be the recipient of gifts for each member of the family. Last year the residents gave gifts totaling $500.00 which came from their craft sales and other sources. Along with “staying out of trouble”, Evelyn has managed to gain recognition on the local artist scene. She entered several of her sketches in this year’s Weatherford Art Association’s Art Competition held in conjunction with the Parker County Peach Festival. One of her entries received the Becky Glasgow Award for special recognition. Not bad for a lady of 91 years.
One day the facility’s Resident Program Coordinator, Sharon Baggett, noticed her sketching and recognized its quality. It

this December promises plenty more smiles.
Somervell County Day means full stomachs, free admission Sometimes, an event manages to benefit everyone involved. Such is the case with Somervell County Day, set for Saturday, Dec. 5 at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. It has become a tradition that now falls one day after Fossil Rim’s Dream Day event. “If you live or work in Somervell County, just bring an item that somehow verifies either residence or employment along with two nonperishable food items per person,” said Warren Lewis, Fossil Rim marketing director. “You’ll be granted free access to the park that day so you can take the Scenic Wildlife Drive.” At day’s end, the food collected is loaded onto a truck and taken directly to Somervell County Food Bank. In the spirit of Christmas, there’s a prevailing theme of generosity. “We get support from the people of Somervell County in a lot of different ways, such as people donating to us, referring others to visit or even volunteering,” Lewis said. “This is a way to show our appreciation.” A holiday photo op will be on the table, as Santa and his elf will be on hand at the Admission Office. Mrs. Claus might even make an appearance. A couple of cans of soup for someone who needs it, paving the way to handfeed a giraffe for free, what could be better?

The Shoppes at Cheerful Village
B
ig changes are on the horizon for Cheerful Heart Gifts and Boutique in Granbury, says owner, Renee Wilson. Back in May of this year, we completely changed the format of our Glen Rose location! It is now a Boutiquey Co-op shopping “mall” with over 40 shops under 1 roof! We took it from 4,000 to 8,000 square feet and have been marketing it as a destination stop on the 67 corridor between the hill country and the metroplex area. Not only did we double the size of the store, we also increased the variety of goods and products. Our Glen Rose destination store is a host to a vast array of shops.
“HER”. Vintage and Shabby Chic furniture, repurposed “junk”, handcrafted jewelry, art, embroidered pillows, personalized items, food items, gift baskets, and metal art to name a few….There’s home décor for the farm house to the vintage cottage. Homemade soaps, bath and body items, garden gifts, candles, inspirational novelties, bridal needs, children’s gifts and of course a multiplicity of apparel and accessories, jewelry and shoes! Fun, function, fabulous,
Our vendors and artisans showcase their unique treasures and offerings in vignette settings to create a charming shopping experience. Cheerful Heart is now just one of the “Village Vendors” and has continued to provide the community with unique and trendy gifts and apparel worthy of our “Fun Stuff Girls Love” trademark… but we created lots of room to feature our new shoppe owners! They display their goodies to compliment our craze worthy finds!…. There are booths for “HIM” and booths for
and fashion in shop after shop of “pretties”. It has been so fun watching the store “morph” and transform as each season and holiday approaches! In the spring and summer months Cheerful Village Glen Rose is adding a 1,000 square foot tea room and 3,000 additional square feet of vendors making this destination a 12,000 sq ft shopping extravaganza! If you haven’t checked out the Glen Rose location yet, it is definitely a “must see” on your list of places to take your family when they come in for the holidays, and a MUST for your holiday shopping! It is a completely different shopping experience from our Granbury location. So our exciting announcement is that The Shoppes at Cheerful Village is coming to Granbury in February 2016!! We are bringing all our vendors plus a plethora of new ones!! We are adding another 1,200 square feet to the Granbury store to make room for this new “footprint”! We are already leasing and interviewing vendors for our new venture! Anyone interested in being a vendor in the Granbury store for the February 2016 opening can contact Renee at 254-898-3084. With all this in mind, says Wilson, we will have to liquidate most of the inventory in the Granbury store to do the necessary construction to accommodate all the new vendors, so be watching for huge sales as we get closer to Christmas!!! Our plan, Lord willing, is to have the new Cheerful Village concept store open at our current Granbury location in February. We have purchased land north of our current location on 377 and will soon be building a larger new store to take our concept to a grander level. The new Cheerful Village will be almost 20,000 square feet and will house a HUGE amount of vendors and merchandise. The new GIANT Cheerful Village store location is slotted to be ready in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Holiday Dining Christina’s Boutique & Bistro offers a “High Tea, with
A Twist” all year round, not just for the holidays. It’s a great way to spend a few hours after shopping. High tea refers to the English way of doing things with clotted cream, scones and lemon curd served alongside a choice of 7 different teas served in matching teapots. The cost of high tea is $24.95 per person plus tax and gratuity. Groups are welcome and like the English, there are rules. You must make reservations at least three days in advance and there is a 48-hour cancellation policy. Seating is 2-3 pm, Monday through Saturday. Everything is made from scratch by the new owners Gary Folger and his wife’s specifications. They bought the restaurant in June and have been working hard to get the menu ready for dinner service. Gary said, “It’s been a work in progress, revamping the menu and now we’re a 100% made from scratch kitchen.” The long awaited dinner service begins on December 2, from 4-7. Regular dinner hours will be Wed-Sat 4-7. A New Year’s Eve dinner is in the planning also. Make your reservations soon!
Ketzler’s greets the holiday season in a traditionally German
fashion with Glühwein. German Glühwein is a delicious blend of crystallized ginger root, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, lemon and orange peels. The recipe, like wassail, is made with red wine, or juice. They will continue to have live, traditional, German folk music every weekend, so you can get your polka on through the holidays.
Farina’s Winery & Café – as you’d expect there is a lot going on at Farina’s. You can expect their usual, happy hours Monday through Friday 4-6:30 pm, live music Friday and Saturday 6-9. New Year’s Eve they will host a party that last year proved
to be note worthy, so make your reservation soon. This year there will be live music from 7-9 then Karaoke from 9-12. The kitchen will close New Year’s Eve at 10 but the bar will remain open till midnight. Regular hours will resume on New Year’s Day.
Eighteen Ninety Grille, Lounge and Marketplace
– As the name implies, Eighteen Ninety has expanded to the delight of the locals. They offer the usual amazing food and superb wine in a quiet, comforting atmosphere and now they offer even more that can help you check off your Christmas list. At the Marketplace you can purchase unique items like gourmet foods, specialty oils & vinegars, spices from all over the world and wine. With recent accolades from Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for 2015, DFW Diner’s Choice winner for Best Overall and the 2015 TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, you would do well to utilize their services to cater or host your holiday event; to book a gathering contact Jason Emerson at info@eighteenninety.com. To make a reservation for dinner you can call them directly or contact OpenTable. Bon Appetite!
Fire Oak Grill in Weatherford will be closed Thursday - Monday,
December 24-28 and reopen on Tuesday, the 29th with their regular dinner service. You can still hear live music on Thursdays, in the bar, from 6:30-9:30. Chef Eric Hunter, one of the finalists in the Fort Worth, Texas Magazine Top Chef Competition will be offering a set menu for New Year’s Eve, reservations are required and will be going fast. The focus is on traditional Texas cuisine inspired by locally grown produce such as Parker County Peaches and Pecans.
Fish Creek Restaurant and Bar, owned by Joe Lane,
will continue to sell their wildly popular Cajun deep fried turkeys for Christmas. Thanksgiving week was a success. They filled over 100 orders, so get your order in soon for Christmas. Executive Chef, Jordan Ray, told me they plan to be open New Years Eve till midnight. Reservations are needed as they fill up fast and they will return to regular hours on New Year’s Day.
