It’s January – Let the Resolutions Begin!! I would be willing to wager that no one ever really follows through with their New Year’s resolutions for more than a week…at least, not any one I’m acquainted with. Maybe that’s because our resolutions remain virtually unchanged from year to year; lose weight, save money, stop procrastinating, and so on. What if we change things up a bit this time, break the mold and make a resolution that might actually stand a chance? After taking an informal poll over the last year, consisting of paying attention to friends and family voicing their “I wish I could or would”, I have come up with a few options for new resolutions. • Learn a new language • Cook more (and under this heading, try a new food each week) • Learn to play a musical instrument or take time to play one you’ve already mastered • Never spend an entire day in the house • Say yes more • Read books • Listen to music from before or after your generation • Learn a new skill • Stop moaning about the things you don’t like and do something about them • Limit looking at Facebook to one time a day • Spend more time with your parents • Take more bubble baths • Take a trip somewhere you’ve never been • Be nicer

We challenge each and every one of you to begin 2016 with a resolution that changes something for the better and will remain with you, not for just a week but for a lifetime. Happy New Year!!

opening weekend saw a draw of $238 million dollars and broke the record in North America. It is expected to have reached half a billion dollars in ticket sales by New Year’s day. That’s right folks, half a billion dollars. It is not only breaking current records, but setting precedent for all future films as well. How’s that for a sequel made 38 years after the original? Still, 2016 is a promising year filled with great new cinematic achievements and delightful stories.
KICKING OFF 2016 ON A STAR WARS HIGH
If
you’re still feeling the societal effects of Star Wars this January, you are not alone. 2015’s most highlyanticipated film was deliberately set for release at the end of the year for good reason-to keep film goers viewing it in to the new year. Its
To kick things off, we have yet another long-awaited film, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in a one-off episode set in Victorian London in 1895. The episode has been co-written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss with performances by Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Louise Brealey and Amanda Abbington.
Scott Eastwood, son of legendary actor Clint Eastwood will make his western film debut in the hotly anticipated Diablo, which follows Jackson (Eastwood), a young Civil War veteran who wakes up to find his beautiful wife kidnapped by ruthless bandits. Expect this to be a huge draw not only in Texas, but the entire southwest as well! (You know how we love our westerns!)
However, if you are still reeling from the frenzied holidays, you’ll find several films in January to mindlessly watch and still be amused. Kung Fu Panda 3 springs to mind, as does Dirty Grandpa, and definitely Fifty Shades of Black (A parody of the popular film/novel 50 Shades of Gray)
A great drama coming out on January 8th is Yosemite, a James Franco film. It’s the fall of 1985. The intertwining tales of three 5th grade friends, Chris, Joe and Ted, unfold in the suburban paradise of Palo Alto, as the threat of a mountain lion looms over the community. Also coming out the same week is The Revenant, an action packed adventure film. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.
So keep that resolution you’ve made to enjoy yourself and time off in 2016, and find those opportunities to kick up your heels and enjoy some laughs, mystery, drama, love and heartbreak, all by visiting your local theater.

ART COLLECTING SMALLER WORKS
The Old Jail Museum
So you’re an art lover, but you don’t think you can afford to collect art? So not true! There are ways that you can start building an art collection even if you’re short on cash, space, or both. Are you in a job right now that requires frequent moves, so you don’t really settle down, and move from temporary dwelling to temporary dwelling? Or you just have a really small house and a very small budget, but you would love to collect art? Here are some ways:

Start small. If you have very little space for art, little treasures may be the answer. You can find them in almost any medium, style and subject matter, so you’re sure to find something you love. Many times an artist will use these to work out an idea or try a new technique before using a larger substrate and greater amounts of supplies. Other times, they will do these “just for fun” or to get the creative juices flowing. Many times now artists recognize a need for smaller works and are creating wonderful works just for you. Have fun with the process of collecting. The Galleries in our community are a great place for a treasure hunter and who doesn’t love finding treasures?

Julie Johnson stars as America’s favorite country music sweetheart in Dean Regan’s musical tribute, “A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline,” co-starring Steve Barcus, and presented by Granbury Theatre Company and Mark Bell at the Granbury Opera House Jan. 8-31. This production is sanctioned by the Patsy Cline Estate. Tickets are priced from $25$40, and are available by calling 817-579-0952 or may be purchased online at www. GranburyTheatreCompany. org. Show performances will be Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m., with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
A loving tribute to country music’s most enduring superstar, the musical journey traces the legendary singer’s rise from her hometown in Winchester, Virginia to the Grand Ole Opry, Las Vegas and Carnegie Hall. Patsy Cline defined the term “crossover hit” by dominating country,
Featuring 21 of Patsy’s greatest hits, the musical tribute includes Walkin’ After Midnight, Sweet Dreams, I Fall to Pieces, Crazy, She’s Got You, Seven Lonely Days and the title song, A Closer Walk with Thee.
Ironically, her musical talent was never really rewarded until Walkin’ After Midnight, which was recorded 10 years after she began singing professionally. Her incredible musical rendition of this song on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts in 1957 not only won the contest, but finally set her on the road to the acclaim she deserved. It was followed three years later by the memorable I Fall to Pieces. Then came Crazy (written by Willie Nelson), She’s Got You, Leavin’ on Your Mind, Sweet Dreams, and Faded Love. Her last single release was A Closer Walk with Thee.
hurrying back to her family after a benefit concert in Kansas City. Patsy’s enduring musical legacy is witnessed by the fact that she is the number one juke-box play in the world. Her Greatest Hits album has sold over 9 million copies, and has been in first place for over 200 weeks of her 700 weeks on Billboard’s “Top Country Catalog Albums.” On March 1, 1995, Patsy was memorialized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and on August 3, 1999, she was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
She realized her lifetime ambition of joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and won 10 awards at the WSM Country Music Festival. In the early 1960s Patsy’s life began settling down-just as her career began to pick up. Two children, a dream home, and a stack of hit records were finally hers, but she would not be able to enjoy them long. Patsy Cline died in an airplane crash March 5, 1963, while

She quit school at 15 to work in a drug store and help support her single mother and her younger brother and sister. Theater - Weatherford Elektra Records, and cut the breakthrough song, “I Should’ve Called.” Just to prove that was no fluke, Raven followed with “Who Do You Know In California,” which established him as a stylist of note. Eddy started his own publishing company and kept writing hit songs for himself as well as others. In1982, his “Thank God for Kids” became a monumental hit for the Oak Ridge Boys, giving him financial breathing room and the opportunity to stretch a little in his own work.
E
ddy Raven’s style of music is rich in lyrical imagery and strong in artistic roots. He has been writing and playing a mixture of rock, country, Cajun and blues since he was a Louisiana teenager. In fact, his first single release for the Georgiabased Cosmo label, “Once A Fool,” was one of his own compositions. He gained a huge amount of all¬ around music biz knowledge working at Lafayette’s La Louisianne label, selling records and working in the facility’s sound studios. It was there that Raven first met and worked with great regional stars such as Professor Longhair, Dr. John, Dale and Grace (“I’m Leaving It All Up To You”) and John Fred and the Playboy Band. The great Bobby Charles (“Walking to New Orleans” and See You Later Alligator”) lived only a few miles away. He cut one of Eddy’s songs and became something of a writing mentor to the young writer/artist. La Louisianne added Eddy to its roster and released his “That Cajun Country Sound.”
This release led Opry star Jimmy C. Newman to invite Raven to Nashville. AcuffRose Publishing signed the young man as a staff writer and he went back to Louisiana determined to write a hit song. He met that goal writing “Country Green” and “Touch the Morning” for Don Gibson, and “Good Morning Country Rain” for Jeannie C. Riley. With the encouragement of AcuffRose’s Don Gant, Eddy made the move to Nashville to pursue his music career full time. Once in Nashville, Eddy continued writing songs for other artists such as Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, George Jones, Kenny Chesney, Chris LeDoux, Lorrie Morgan, Gene Watson, Johnny Cash, Lynn Anderson, Connie Smith, Faron Young, Moe Bandy, Brenda Lee, Toby Keith, and many more. When Don Gant moved to ABC Records, he signed Raven as an artist. What followed was a string of charted songs which didn’t bring him stardom, but made him an interesting prospect to fans and labels alike. Five years later he signed with
www.myhometownstexas.com
The following year, after signing with RCA, Eddy wrote and co-produced his first #1, “I Got Mexico.” It was the first in a long line of hits! Eddy’s attention to quality has consistently paid off. He’s been at the top of the charts with music that has often defied classification and was never run-of-the mill. This is an artist who, without sacrificing any musical integrity, has had 8 No. 1 songs such as “Bayou Boys,” “I Got Mexico,” “Shine, Shine, Shine,” “I’m Gonna Get You,” “Joe knows How To Live,” “Till You Cry,” “In A Letter To You,” and “She’s Gonna Win Your Heart.” Even his songs that did not hit No. 1 went on to become country classics. Take for example, the top-10 cuts, “Sooner or Later,” “Island,” “You’re Playing Hard to Forget,” “I Could Use Another You,” “Right Hand Man,” “You’re Never Too Old For Young Love,” “I Should’ve Called,” “Who Do You Know In California,” and “A Little Bit Crazy.” In short he has 30 ASCAP song writing awards, 8 #1 ‘s , 14 Top lO’s, 23 Top lOO’s, and 24 albums to his credit.
out a new live CD which contains 22 hits. This 76 minute CD showcases Raven’s vocal ability and the electricity of his live shows. “Eddy Raven Live In Concert” is the most comprehensive CD that he has ever released. On top of all this there is Eddy Raven’s “Mexi-Cajun Gourmet Sauce.” It took 1st place in Austin at the Fiery Foods Show. When asked about the pace he said, “It sure beats the other option.” See Eddy at The Texas Opry Theater in Weatherford on Valentine’s weekend, February 13th, 2016 at 7:30pm. The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band with the Belle of The Grapevine Opry Lani Bartley Stacy and Layne Golden will open the show and warm you up to bring on Eddy Raven and his band. our wedding is the first day of a long, life-altering journey. The road may get tricky at times, but the view is never less than fascinating – and your companion is beyond compare. Shouldn’t everything about your wedding and reception be as perfect? Choosing the right site for your event is the first step in accomplishing that goal. In a perfect world, one with unlimited resources, what would you choose for your wedding and reception site. It is always wise to start with your ideal location and go from there. There are several important factors to consider when making your decision. A site that can accommodate both the wedding and reception is preferable for most couples. It eliminates the need for guests to travel and since only one deposit is required, it keeps the costs down on what is always an expensive part of the day. If your dreams are of a beautiful garden wedding, it is necessary to consider an alternate plan in the event of inclement weather. A site that provides an indoor alternative is definitely worth considering. Since rental
fees for such items as tables and chairs can be higher than most people expect, it is nice if the facility includes these in their wedding package. Finally, it is a big plus to have an on-site wedding coordinator available at the facility you choose. Many an otherwise perfect day has been ruined by wellmeaning relatives and friends who volunteer to help “run the show”.

O
ver the Thanksgiving holiday many of you probably tuned in to the big Westminster Dog Show, at least for a little while. But, how many of you really understand what goes on in the dog show world? It seems impossible that judges can compare dogs that seem so fundamentally different and come up with a best in show; over here is a droopy faced blood hound, over there a meticulously groomed prancing poodle, and in between a small Maltese dog that your untrained eye almost mistook for a mop. Dog shows are events in which purebred dogs compete against each other based on their breeds’ standards. The American Kennel Club runs Westminster, the most famous show in the U.S. while the U.K. is home to the largest dog show, Crufts. The term conformation refers to a dog’s physical attributes, including appearance and body structure. Conformation shows are popular among dog enthusiasts and those who promote pure breeding of dogs. Many dog shows don’t offer big cash prizes to the winners but even after a century they remain a popular tradition.
The following is a list of attributes the judges look for in each breed: • Balance: overall appearance and proportion in size • Weight • Size • Eyes: color, size, shape • Ears: shape, length, position • Head: shape • Muzzle: shape, length • Whiskers: thickness • Teeth: kind of bite • Tail: how it arches and sets • Shoulders: bone, muscle • Legs: muscles, stance, proportionality • Coat: texture, length • Color: accepted breed colors The American Kennel Club has assembled these criteria for each of their recognized breeds. The dog that the judges think matches its breed’s criteria the best wins the competition. Out of several hundred distinct dog breeds today, the AKC only recognizes a little more than 150. These breeds are separated into groups that distinguish them based on what they were bred to do. The groups are and a few examples are: • Sporting dogs: pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. These dogs are good hunters • Hounds: beagles, bloodhounds and dachshunds. These dogs have exceptional sense of smell and great physical endurance • Working dogs: great danes, rottweilers and saint bernards. These dogs are a large size with great strength making them good in search and rescue or protecting a home • Terriers: bull terriers, Scottish terriers, miniature schnauzers. These
14 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
dogs are known for their energetic personalities • Toy dogs: shih tzus, poodles, pugs. You know, the kind you see people carrying around in a purse (the size is the key) • Non-sporting dogs: bulldog, dalmation, American Eskimo dog. Catch-all category for breeds that don’t have any unifying characteristics • Herding dogs: Australian shepherds, collies. These dogs are excellent at herding animals. Best of Breed in each group compete against each other in group shows. If a dog wins first prize in its group show, it will then go on to compete in an All-Breed show. After judges narrow it down to seven winners from the seven different groups they award Best in Show. So, now when you happen across a televised dog show, you won’t be left wondering what all the fuss is about. The meticulous judging process and heated competition make dog shows fun for contestants and viewers alike.

Shopping craving you may have. “I love bling, so why be stuck at a job for a paycheck. My boys were nearly grown, the electrical business was changing, and I knew it was time for me to make a change.” It didn’t happen overnight. There were lots of days, nights and weekends renovating and remodeling, ordering, cataloging and the dreaded paperwork to get a store open and running. But, Tanya was determined.

ou have probably seen, and wondered in awe at the newest addition for your shopping pleasure, in Acton. It’s the front grill of a painted pink 50’s model Chevy pickup truck displaying the name of the new store, “Bling It On Boutique”. Tanya and her fiancé Richard worked together to create the stunning attention getter. Owner, Tanya Clayton opened the boutique on November 3, 2015, which was a culmination of dreams, timing and hard work. Tanya was the manager of an electrical business in town but realized things change, life happens, and there are times when you need to find something else to do. Being a single mom with three boys, 21 year-old twins and a15 year-old, work was necessary. Once she made the decision to do something different, she set her sights on jewelry. She loves bling and knows lots of other

winter weather coming our way. She has specials that you will need to check out on her Facebook page. Merchandise changes frequently so if there is a special bling that catches your eye, you need to snatch it up. Tanya is excitedly looking ahead to spring when she gets in her favorite sandals and flipflops. Bling It On Boutique 3009 Green Meadows Rd. folks do too. While still at the electric company, Tanya spent her nights and weekends selling jewelry from her home. She had pondered the name of her new business for a while before settling on Bling It On Boutique. She soon wanted to expand, and Richard, owner of the property in Acton where the store is now located, pitched in to make her dreams come true. It was a perfect fit. “It’s small, so I have to be selective about what I sell, and I change out merchandise regularly,” Tanya told me. “It took a lot of nights and weekends while I still worked at the electrical business to get the place ready, but it was worth it.” Selling gemstones set in sterling silver, fashion jewelry, clothing, shoes, bling caps, home décor and more you can satisfy just about any bling

B
ig changes in 2016 for Cheerful Heart Gifts and Boutique in Granbury, says owner, Renee Wilson. Back in May of this year, we completely changed the format of our Glen Rose location! It is now a Boutiquey Co-op shopping “mall” with over 40 shops under 1 roof! We took it from 4,000 to 8,000 square feet and have been marketing it as a destination stop on the 67 corridor between the hill country and the metroplex area. Not only did we double the size of the store, we also increased the variety of goods and products. Our Glen Rose destination store is a host to a vast array of shops. Our vendors and artisans showcase their unique treasures and offerings in vignette settings to create a charming shopping experience. Cheerful Heart is now just one of the “Village Vendors” and has continued to provide the community with unique and trendy gifts and apparel worthy of our “Fun Stuff Girls Love” trademark… but we created lots of room to feature our new shoppe owners! They display their goodies to compliment our craze worthy finds!….There are booths for “HIM” and booths for “HER”. Vintage and Shabby Chic furniture, repurposed “junk”, handcrafted jewelry, art, embroidered pillows, personalized items, food items, gift baskets, and metal art to name a few….There’s home décor for the farm house to the vintage cottage. Homemade soaps, bath and body items, garden gifts, candles, inspirational novelties, bridal needs, children’s gifts and of course a multiplicity of apparel and accessories, jewelry and shoes! Fun, function, fabulous, and fashion in shop after shop of “pretties”. It has been so fun watching the store “morph” and transform as each season and holiday approaches! In the spring and summer months Cheerful Village Glen Rose is adding a 1,000 square foot tea room and 3,000 additional square feet of vendors making this destination a 12,000 sq ft shopping extravaganza!
www.myhometownstexas.com
If you haven’t checked out the Glen Rose location yet, it is definitely a “must see” on your list of places to take your family when they come in for the holidays, and a MUST for your holiday shopping! It is a completely different shopping experience from our Granbury location. So our exciting announcement is that The Shoppes at Cheerful Village is coming to Granbury in February 2016!! We are bringing all our vendors plus a plethora of new ones!! We are adding another 1,200 square feet to the Granbury store to make room for this new “footprint”! We are already leasing and interviewing vendors for our new venture! Anyone interested in being a vendor in the Granbury store for the February 2016 opening can contact Renee at 254-898-3084. With all this in mind, says Wilson, we will have to liquidate most of the inventory in the Granbury store to do the necessary construction to accommodate all the new vendors, so be watching for huge sales as we get closer to Christmas!!! Our plan, Lord willing, is to have the new Cheerful Village concept store open at our current Granbury location in February. We have purchased land north of our current location on 377 and will soon be building a larger new store to take our concept to a grander level. The new Cheerful Village will be almost 20,000 square feet and will house a HUGE amount of vendors and merchandise. The new GIANT Cheerful Village store location is slotted to be ready in the fourth quarter of 2016. We look forward to seeing you!!!!
