It’s May, It’s May, the Lovely Month of May… Spring blooms, beautiful weather and Mom – whenever I think about May those images come to mind. What a perfect time of year to celebrate motherhood in all its glory! When I was a young mother of a beautiful little girl, a friend of mine gave me a note card that I have kept for years. On it, was the following poem: Bright clasp of her whole hand around my finger, My daughter, as we walk together now. All my life I’ll feel a ring invisibly Circle this bone with shining: when she is grown Far from today as her eyes are far already. -Steven Spender Although, back then, it made me sad thinking about how fast she was growing and how much I would miss her babyhood, today it gives me joy to read it and remember those days; grateful for the wonderful woman she has grown up to be.

Whatever you decide to do for Mom on her special day, don’t forget to say thank you. After all, as someone once said, “it’s never easy being a mother. If it were easy, fathers would do it!” Happy Mother’s Day,

MAY IS THE MONTH OF ANIMATION No better month beckons the out-ofschool kids (of all ages) to the theater more than May. It’s an animationpalooza out there folks, and the studios are doing their best to get that early summer lunch money! So grab your plastic cape, your over-muscled super hero jumpsuit and go buy a ticket to an action flick near you! Up first is the current front runner of all animations; Captain America: Civil War opens nationwide May 6th. Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard
humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johannson, and Jeremy Renner. Although not necessarily animation, the Curse of Sleeping Beauty, will rival other films in the pre-teen and early teenage demographic. This dark-ish tale stars Thomas Kaiser as Peck. Peck inherits an ancestral mansion that has been in his family for generations -- only to learn that he has also inherited an ancient curse stemming back to the Crusades. Forced into his new role as “protector” -- the guardian
appointed to keep the evil demons in the house at bay -- Thomas teams with an ambitious local realtor (Hall) and paranormal cleric (Davison) to unravel the mystery of the house, while struggling to awaken the beautiful Briar Rose (Eisley), held captive in a terrifying netherworld seen previously in his dreams. (Sidenote – Ethan Peck is the grandson of actor Gregory Peck! Isn’t nice to see a continuation of talented families in film?) Not to be outdone by Captain America this month is XMEN: APOCALYPSE, the sequel to 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and the ninth installment in the X-Men film series. Since the dawn of civilization, Apocalypse was worshipped as a god. He was the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, and amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and
save mankind from complete destruction. If something more whimsical suits your mood this spring, be sure to take in Alice Through The Looking Glass, opening in theaters nationwide on May 27th. An all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Alice returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. Alice Kingsleigh (Wasikowska) has spent the past few years following in her father’s footsteps and sailing the high seas. Upon her return to London, she comes across a magical looking glass and returns to the fantastical realm of Underland and her friends the White Rabbit (Sheen), Absolem (Rickman), the Cheshire Cat (Fry) and the Mad Hatter (Depp), who is not himself. The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana (Hathaway) sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past, she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. FUN FACT: XMEN were originally going to be called The Merry Mutants. Just doesn’t seem right, does it? Thank goodness someone had the foresight not to go that route!

“Some people paint, some sew... I meddle,” says Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi in the famous Broadway musical as she attempts to marry Horace Vandergelder, the well-known half-a-millionaire, and send his money circulating among the people like rainwater the way her late husband taught her. The musical – set in New York during the turn of the twentieth century – is full of memorable songs including “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “Ribbons Down My Back”, “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Elegance,” “It Only Takes a Moment” and “So Long, Dearie.” Hello Dolly is under the direction of GTC artistic executive director Phil Groeschel, who was last at the helm of a production during last December’s Mary Poppins. Musical direction is by Amber Lanning with choreography by Brooke Goodson. Kalani Morrissette is the stage manager assisted by Whitney Shearon and Reilly Kaye Anderson.

Shopping Barb is a grandmother and a great-grandmother, so her leisure time is spent cuddling and spoiling her 5 grandsons, 1 great-granddaughter and 1 great-grandson. When Barb decided to come out of retirement, Steve thought she was nuts but he’s stood behind her, even doing the computer work and handling all the receipts and books as well as some cooking and cleaning around the house. “He’s doing what he loves, playing golf and I’m doing what I love, helping others. I support him and he supports me.” It’s worked for them for 50 years.
SHOPPING
Strut Your Stuff Boutique will be holding Dressing for Your Shape classes in the evenings. Check Facebook page for dates and times. Any size, shape or personality can strut your stuff. You don’t have to be a model. You don’t have to fit into a box.
Strut Your Stuff Boutique offers a fun shopping experience with quality clothes at an affordable price – “Helping every woman to ‘Strut Your Stuff’!”
Quarterly: Strut Your Stuff Boutique sponsors a style show; the next is July 16th at the Inn on the River from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. (noon). There is still “Sip, Shop & BeBop – Girls’ Night Out @ Glen Rose Square” on May 21st, where the more you shop the more you can win. There is even talk of a “Be” festival in November. You are hearing it here first, so listen for more details. There are plans for a Christmas village, and Winter Wonderland on the Square, as Glen Rose and it’s merchants work together to reach out to tourists and locals. Things are really popping in Glen Rose.
“The most awesome shop with so much to choose from. Great prices and the most adorable owner. BARB. Love her and her shop!!!!!!!!” Review by Maxanne Otto on October 13, 2015, Facebook.
Strut Your Stuff Boutique 102 Walnut St Glen Rose, TX (307) 631-4106
Since last year, when Barb Briscoe first opened the Strut Your Stuff Boutique on the square in Glen Rose, she has met some pretty amazing people. She told me recently that her passion is to meet peoples’ needs in Glen Rose and the surrounding areas; to help women feel good about the way they dress and the way they look. According to Barb, “When you make a purchase from us we want you to feel good about it. It’s never just a sell, it’s a way for us to help someone feel better. When you wear a new outfit or accessory it has a way of making you feel like a million bucks.”
Open seven days a week Hours vary: Monday-Tuesday 11-5:30, Wednesday-Thursday-Friday-Saturday 10- 5:30, Sunday 11:30-4 pm By: Marie Valden
Barb and her husband Steve moved to Pecan Plantation in 2008, from Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they lived for more than 30 years. While there, Barb worked in the retail industry and Steve worked for Union Pacific. When she and Steve first retired, they played golf, everyday. Although Barb loved the leisure time, she began to feel like she needed to do more. She had a 10x10 booth at a flea market but when the building opened up on the square she decided to go for it and opened Strut Your Stuff Boutique. She laughed, “I’ll keep going till I can’t go anymore.” The name came from the Peacock’s, “that prance around Pecan Plantation like they own the place,” Barb said. “They are beautiful, so know who you are and strut your stuff.” 22 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
