So I’m out there in my bedroom slippers and Superman boxers, hanging my shirts on the line, when my mind gets to wandering back to the time a few years ago I had just collected eggs from the nest boxes,

Glory rising as I squared off for the next pitch. I opted for the split-fingered fastball right down the middle. Pow! Popped that pup right in the buttock and she came out of the “hunter’s

trance” that had kept her paralyzed for so long. She came running to me and I picked her up with one hand. Looking back at the skunk, we saw it eating one of those eggs. Good trade, I thought, a dozen eggs for a non-stinky dog. (It was about another month before Belle would come flying into the house, barrelrolling down the hallway, wiping off polecat juice on the walls, floor, furniture… everything. It was then that I learned that the old tomato juice remedy is completely worthless. Best go with a quart of hydrogen peroxide, a pint of water, and a box of baking soda.) What a great memory. I put my load of clean shirts over my shoulder and headed for the house, stirring up a few grasshoppers as I walked. All was beautiful until one of those grasshoppers

launched straight up… straight up the leg of my Superman boxers. Well, that was enough to turn this Man of Steel into the Man of Squeal! I scream and flail like an idiot until I finally dislodge this prickly-legged Krytonite kritter from my nether regions….when out of the corner of my eye, I see my neighbor lady standing there, wide-eyed and flash-frozen, empty egg carton in hand.

True enough, I started hangin’ laundry on the clothesline because my dryer blew out, but it has turned into one of my favorite rituals of country living. Nothing gets a cotton shirt feeling like it should like a good, old-fashioned airing out in the sunshine. It’s actually hard science that those UV rays do magical things for socks and underwear, though I’m not sure the neighbor lady will ever be the same since she came over for some eggs and saw my “Superman” boxers flying proudly in the breeze. While it’s good for the clothes, I like what hangin’ laundry does for my spirit. Physically, I may be pinning jeans to a plastic-coated wire, but mentally, I’m soaring through time and memories… beautiful memories. Like the first time I saw bluebirds swooping across the meadow. Like the time one of my chickens was walking across the yard and paused for about ten seconds, dropped an egg right there on the ground, then kept on walking. (Jenny always was one for surprises.)

and was carrying about fifteen of those beauties in my shirt tail pouch when I heard all this commotion in the meadow. I followed the barking until I saw my little dog, Belle, squared off with a skunk. Well, I started calling her, but she was too transfixed upon that polecat to pay any attention to me. I quickly realized that all the hollering in the world wasn’t going to help, so I had to think fast, because I sure wasn’t going over there and get in the middle of that mayhem. I started to look around for some way to distract the dog, when I realized the answer was right in my hands. I had about fifteen chances to get that crazy canine’s attention. I started launching eggs. The first three fastball pitches went whizzing by unnoticed, and I began to panic. Bad time to have a small dog. I tried a slower speed with the next three…didn’t hit Belle, but got the skunk’s attention, which I didn’t figure was a good thing, since it meant the skunk was smarter than my dog. I tried sidearm, which got close. I tried a high lob once…no good. Only a few eggs left…it was time to man up. I could almost feel Kate Smith singing and Old

The Texas Opry Theater is proud to welcome the former Granbury Live Band to their new home stage in Weatherford, Texas. The Jukebox Journey commemorated three decades of American pop music from the 50’s, 60’s 70’s and even some 80’s. It was directed and produced by Mr. Roger Ramsey, the band’s bass player and leader. Mr. Jackson Nightingale headlined the show with “Princess” Alecia Echols, Stephanie Little, Zac

Wilson and a surprise guest, Ms. Linda Morgan, a former member of the Granbury Live Theater Group and currently with the Rock Box Theater in New Braunfels, Tx., along with the Amazing band members Christian Hutton on lead guitar, Mike Echols the “blue-eyed” fiddler, Roger Ramsey on bass, Joe Tom McDonald on keyboards, and Josh Rodgers on drums. Jackson Nightingale, Linda Morgan, Alecia, Zac and Stephanie wowed the crowd with a fast moving, well- choreographed, professional show. Jackson

Theater T

heatre Off the Square continues to entertain year after year as the longest running theatrical venue in Parker County. This year is no exception and the upcoming Fall Mini Season promises to be a real treat! Bus Stop opens the Mini Season beginning September 6th and runs through the 22nd. This “slice of life” story begins in the middle of

a howling snowstorm when a bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a nightclub chanteuse, is the passenger with the most to worry about. She’s been pursued, made love to and finally kidnapped by a young cowboy with a ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the café and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-age scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the café also gets her first taste of romance.

www.myhometownstexas.com

Bus Stop premiered on Broadway in 1955 and one year later was brought to the big screen with Marilyn Monroe playing the character of Cherie. Playwright William Inge gives us real people with all their quirks – good and bad. His play is romantic, sad, and really, really funny… a lovely jewel box of a play.

Performances are Friday and Saturday nights at 8p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2p.m. 2013 Fall Mini Season Bus Stop by William Inge (Sept. 6-22. 2013) Dramatists Play Service, Comedy Bad Seed by Maxwell Anderson

(from William March’s novel) (Oct. 18-Nov. 3, 2013) Dramatists Play Service, Inc., Thriller The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson (Dec. 6-22, 2013) Samuel French, Comedy

For the upcoming months Theatre Off the Square will be offering several SEASON TICKET options! Call 817-341-8687 for reservations or more information. Like their Facebook page and visit their website at theatreoffthesquare.org.

on the Outlaws of Country music, Rocky was a professional musician by the age of 18. He wanted to lead a band that focused on original music, and Texas Country. That band came about shortly after moving to Weatherford where he met Marc Holtsclaw, The rest of the gang including Mike Murphy soon followed. Their different musical backgrounds, and years of professional music making, create a unique blend of old and new school country, mixed with southern rock.

Influences include: Lynyrd Skynrd, AC/ DC, The Beatles, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and too many more to mention. “We get asked a lot, ‘What kind of music do you play’? That’s a hard question to answer. We play blues, country, southern rock and original music. I guess we could best be described as Texas Eclectic. If you want to find out exactly what that is, the best thing to do is just come to a show.” The Rocky Lott Band has fans that come from all walks of life and listen to all types of music. So far their EP, “Rolling The Dice” is getting airplay on a few stations with the first single, “Ain’t Gotta Go Home”. Whistle Hill Cafe presents diners with a “sweet dilemma” when it comes to choosing dessert!

DINING

Two blocks east of the town square, on the road that circles the 1886 county courthouse and takes the traveler to Fort Worth, Whistle Hill Café sits on a hill overlooking the historic Santa Fe Depot and the year-round Farmers’ Market. The neighbor to the west is the Museum of the Americas, and numerous locally-owned antique and specialty shops and businesses are within walking distance. Across Santa Fe Drive, on the grounds of “First Monday Trade Days”, a bustling crowd of vendors and shoppers gather every month.

Diners’ choices include homemade soup, quiche, combinations made of salads, soup, sandwiches and quiche and hearty house-specialty salads, sandwiches and

The sweetest dilemma Whistle Hill customers face is choosing dessert. Some favorites are Italian cream cake, Chocolate fudge cake, Carrot cake, Cheesecake, Buttermilk lemon coconut pie, Lemon chess, Kentucky Derby pie, Chocolate

Built in 1999 to take advantage of a beautiful downtown location, the restaurant is constructed of Texas hill country limestone and landscaped with plants that are tolerant of the local weather and thrive anyway. Most of the customers have been choosing Whistle Hill for lunch since they first discovered it, whenever that was. The owners are Ryder and Leslie White, and D’Lancer White, brother to Ryder. You will probably see one of them as soon as you step in the door, as they do all the cooking and baking in the
