It’s June – Show Dad the Love At the turn of the century, Mother’s Day observances were growing across the United States. The federal government had yet to recognize the holiday, but many states had adopted the third Sunday in May as a special celebration day honoring mothers. It was during a Mother’s Day church service on June 20, 1909, that Sonora Smart Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, was struck with the idea of creating a special holiday to honor fathers too. When Sonora was 16, her mother died while giving birth to her sixth child, the last of five sons. Back then, like today, single parenthood was no easy task. By Sonora’s account, though, Mr. Smart did a wonderful job. Because of this love and esteem, Sonora Smart Dodd believed that her father deserved a special time of honor just like that given to mothers on Mother’s Day. In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd approached the Spokane YMCA and the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested that her father’s birthday — June 5 — become a celebration day for Father’s Day. Because they wanted more time to prepare, the Ministerial Alliance chose June 19 instead. The first Father’s Day was thus observed in the State of Washington on June 19, 1910. The idea of officially celebrating fatherhood spread quickly across the United States, as more and more
states adopted the holiday. In 1972, President Richard Nixon permanently established the observance of the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in the United States. Sonora’s wonderful idea to honor her father has become a tradition here in the United States and each year we strive to find special ways to let Dad know how much he is appreciated. Here, in our part of the country, there are plenty of unique and fun activities sure to make a big hit: Dads get in free at Legoland Discovery Center A family that builds together, stays together, right? Warm up to fun this June at the theatre! With the climbing temperatures and cleaning of outdoor grills, June brings us a huge dash of fun this year to kick off the summer season. With the kiddos out of school, there is certainly a rise in animation and comedy. We also have a few hidden surprises for the adults this month with splashes of romance and suspense. But no matter your age, it seems certain that you and everyone around you will be somehow touched by the longest-awaited animation film sequel in history – FINDING DORY. This sequel to the massively successful FINDING NEMO back
in 2003, has been years and years in the making. This time around, it’s Nemo’s forgetful friend Dory who needs a little help. Finding Dory welcomes back to the big screen everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres), who’s living happily in the reef with Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) and Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence). When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, the trio takes off on a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium. In an effort to find her mom (voice of Diane Keaton) and dad (voice of Eugene Levy), Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill), a cantankerous octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey (voice of Ty Burrell), a beluga whale who is convinced his biological sonar skills are on the fritz; and Destiny (voice of Kaitlin Olson), a nearsighted whale shark. Deftly navigating the complex inner
workings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family. ME BEFORE YOU is a fantastic little rom-com that adults will be happy to slip away for a few hours to go and enjoy. Louisa “Lou” Clark (Clarke) lives in a quaint town in the English countryside. With no clear direction in her life, the quirky and creative 26-year-old goes from one job to the next in order to help her tight-knit family make ends meet. Her normally cheery outlook is put to the test, however, when she faces her newest career challenge. Taking a job at the local “castle”, she becomes caregiver and companion to Will Traynor (Claflin), a wealthy young banker who became wheelchair bound in an accident two years prior, and whose whole world changed dramatically in the blink of an eye. No longer the adventurous soul he once was, the now cynical Will has all but given up. That is until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living. Embarking together on a series of adventures, both Lou and Will get more than they bargained for, and find their lives—and hearts -- changing in ways neither one could have imagined. Opening Friday, June 24th is INDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE. (Which is coincidentally one of only two films opening in 3D for the month) We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie
genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Don’t bet your bucks on Will Smith returning for this one, however. To try and give FINDING DORY a run for its’ money, is yet another Ninja Turtles remake. Also in 3D, is TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS. This is the sequel to the 2014 hit film and is based on the comics by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Possible spoiler here folks: Michael Bay has confirmed to Rolling Stone that Krang, the tentacle sarcastic talking brain in a robot body from Dimension X, will serve as the main villain. So be expecting more adventures with turtle crime fighters Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael. FUN FACT: Finding Nemo had the largest opening ever for an animation film, and after its release, clown fish became so high in demand that they couldn’t be found in most parts of the U.S. Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Art She now has achieved recognition from the years of study and practice. Besides being awarded in many art shows, she was invited to be part of the August, 2015 issue of the prestigious Southwest Art Magazine. The section, “Women in Art,” featured women artists from all over the world. She also was part of the March, 2016 issue in the section, “Art of Texas.” Roberta says, “I am influenced by the Impressionists and continue to use light and it’s components in my work. The greatest joy of painting is seeing the look on the faces of clients when they see their portrait
The Student Becomes Great One of the newest artists in Granbury galleries, Roberta Mallard, has been a student of art most of her life. “Art has always been integral to my life.” After studying art and drawing at UCLA, she became a photographer maintaining a full, black and white dark room. Her work led to being placed in the Kodak International Photo Awards. Portraits, press and art photography created interest in contrast, composition and color, which led to a position of press photographer with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. That job then led to her career in painting and also to international artist, Sharon Markwardt, who is known for her “Color of the West”.
or have just purchased a painting and hearing the words, ‘I love it.’” You can see a great collection of both these accomplished artists’, Roberta and Sharon, works at Your Private Collection Art Gallery on the square and we are sure we will hear “I love it”. Enjoy all the galleries in our area as they continue to bring you amazing artists.
For three years, she studied with Sharon increasing her knowledge of composition and color. What also was important was that Roberta was actively involved in a weekly, critique group of accomplished artists and sculptors. “I continue to practice and believe that the more miles you put on your brush, the better the paintings.” 6 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

The 32nd annual Peach Festival will take place in Historic Downtown Weatherford on Saturday, July 9th from 8a.m. to 5p.m. Here’s your chance to get your fill of the succulent, fuzzy fruit that made Parker County famous. Salsas, preserves, cookies, cakes, and of course, ice cream. Even the area restaurants around the square get into the act with peach flavored delicacies such as Fire Oak Grill’s famous Peaches Foster; an amazing dessert modeled on the traditional Bananas Foster recipe that is only available around the time of the Festival. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We have all heard that phrase used from time to time when someone has gotten something very right. At least that is what I thought when I spoke with Sam King, one of the owners of The Wagon Yard; one business that has done it right for almost 40 years. That is an entire generation. The original structure of the Wagon Yard building was constructed in 1906 and was utilized as a wagon yard where horse-drawn wagons and townspeople would gather for the days’ activities around the Granbury Square. Through the years the building was used, among other things, as a feed store, a restaurant and a photography studio.
The Wagon Yard is currently owned and operated by Ray’s sons. Each of the sons ventured out into the world to either gain an education like Aaron, who went to TCU, or like Sam and John who worked in construction for a short time. They all made their way back to the family business and utilize their talents for the good of the store. John now works with lighting and ceiling fans; Sam is the general manager and oversees furniture and Aaron is the CPA and computer/web guy. At any given time there could be several other family members working at the Wagon Yard. The sons have families and are raising a new generation, so who knows what wonderful treasures or talents they may have in store for the Wagon Yard in the coming years. If you have not viewed the new website or liked them on Facebook, I would recommend you do so as soon as possible. Sam told me that they are, “… always open to change.” And they work to keep things, “… fresh and new”. He also said that one of the keys to the success of the Wagon Yard is, “lots of good employees.” The King family support the local economy, not only by hiring
locals, but Granbury is their home. They live here, work here, have children in school here, shop and play here. In Furniture, you can find office pieces from desks to credenzas, living/dining room and everything for the bedroom, including Posturepedic mattresses. Even the outdoors is included with porch rockers and media centers. They carry decorative accessories like mirrors, art, wall décor, clocks, tin ceilings, candleholders, fireplaces and lamps. The nostalgia section specializes in Life Magazines from all but a few select years, signs, music, games and, yes, record players! They are committed to friendly service, quality merchandise and reasonable prices. The Wagon Yard offers pricing that will meet any budget and most items are ‘Made In America’. Stop by soon and allow their family and friendly, knowledgeable staff help you find the right furniture and accessories for your home or office. 213 N. In the 1950’s a wing was added to the original structure, which expanded the size to nearly 9,000 square feet. In 1977, Ray King secured the building to house his antiques and collectibles he transported from Aplington, Iowa. Since then, the business has grown from an antique www.myhometownstexas.com
