Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

It’s September – Let the Festivals Begin!

H

ard to believe, I know, but fall is in the air once again and with it comes a plethora of festivals throughout our area. From small church and community center events to large city sponsored blow outs, there’s sure to be no shortage of these popular annual celebrations to indulge in. This year, along with the usual array of annual offerings, several new festivals have sprung up. Buoyed by the success of other added events in the past few years, the Historic Granbury Merchants Association is sponsoring a Labor Day Lake Fest 2016, September 3rd through the 5th. Designed to be fun for visitors and locals alike, the new festival promises to be a great way to celebrate the end of summer and to kick-off the fall season. Activities will be held on the downtown Courthouse Square, City Beach and nearby Hewlett Park. Vendors will sell items on the Square and all the shops in that area are holding Labor Day sales with extended open hours during the Festival. The three day event will feature music, kid’s events, a petting zoo, food, shopping and more! A fishing tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Lake Granbury sponsored by Lake Granbury Marina. The usual water activities will also be available and the event culminates with a lighted boat parade Saturday night at 8p.m. Brookshires Grocery will be sponsoring a fish fry on Saturday from 11a.m. to 7p.m. in Hewlett Park. Directly across the street, at City Beach, a sand sculpting competition will take place as well. For more information on all the activities go to: www.granburysquare.com

Later this month, historic Weatherford Texas, a Texas Main Street City, invites you to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bankhead Highway with an impressive array of events held September 23 and 24th during their Bankhead Celebration. Texas Highway No.1 was built to be part of the Bankhead National Highway which was the nation’s first “all-weather”, coast-to-coast highway. It avoided the mountains and winter weather of more northern latitudes and could be relied on for year-round travel. Weatherford’s connection to this historic highway will be celebrated with events that commemorate the 1920’s and highlight the touring days of old. Various restaurants will participate in a Speakeasy Stroll from 7p.m. to 12a.m. on Friday and once again from 8a.m. to 11a.m. on Saturday with Breakfast on the Bankhead. Saturday’s packed schedule features: Crusin’ Bankhead Highway “1”, an Antique Auto Show on the Square, Show and Shine (an opportunity to show off your dream car), Stray Days (a 1920’s market), Then & Now Historic Seek & Find, a 1920’s Theatrical Bankhead Production presented by Theater Off the Square, a Tallulah Bankhead Look-A-Like Contest and live music on the Square with the day ending at a Bankhead Speakeasy Bash held at Vintage Car Museum from 8p.m. to 12a.m. For more detailed information go to: www.weatherfordtx.gov/bankhead. Check out the Activities pages of our magazine for a full list of September activities and events in your area, round up your family and friends, and come celebrate the fun and frivolity of your favorite fall festival!

through the new seasons of riveting television shows and upcoming films.

BLAIR WITCH, BRIDGET JONES, & THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RETURN! (Well that’s just plain crazy talk!)

Y

ou know September is on the way when it gets dark by 8pm, and you start to catch small glimpses of weather without hair-heightening humidity. Well, we may not be out of the woods with the heat just yet, but thankfully we can indulge ourselves in manufactured air conditioning and live vicariously

That’s right folks, clear your DVR’s and scan your preview charts- television is back on! No more watching old re-runs of America’s Got Talent and Season 2 of Downton Abbey, heck no! - Your favorite shows are back on with new episodes! (as a sigh of relief is had by your 2006 collection of scratched dvd’s). Sadly, a few old shows are no longer with us… and may you rest in peace Mike & Molly. However don’t let that get you down. If sentiment and familiar are your game this month, just look to the big screen! You’ll see a few films that will really take you back. One will really take you back- and I’m talking 1960 here. The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the original, is set to hit screens

nationwide on September 23rd. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel GarciaRulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money. Let’s be honest folks, we’ll watch anything with Denzel fighting for justice of any kind. Sully, a film dedicated to our collective memory of an amazing real-life story, is set for opening on September 9th. Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, a pilot for more than four decades, is catapulted to fame after birds fly into the engines of flight 1549 on January 15, 2009, crippling the jet. He lands the plane safely on the surface of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 passengers on board. Oh, I remember it well. And with Tom Hanks playing Sully, expect this to be a huge draw at the box office! Oh that Bridget! Our favorite quirky, odd, and unpredictable British gal is at it again in Bridget Jones’s Baby opening September 16th. After breaking up with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones’s (Zellweger) “happily ever after” hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as top news producer and surround herself

www.myhometownstexas.com

with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong? Last, but certainly not least in the “old is new” category is Blair Witch. This is the third installment of Blair Witch and will be opening against Bridget Jones. (Probably not the smartest idea Lionsgate!) However, a group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined. Fun Fact: As mentioned, The Magnificent Seven is a re-make of the original film by the same name in 1960. However, did ya know? … the original was actually a re-make Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Seven Samurai. hen Rosanne Kayl was visiting her grandsons in Canada she took them on a journey to Paint it! Pottery in Watertown, NY. That journey would turn out to be the beginning of an idea that became a reality in February, 2016. Rosanne Kayl MSOL/CEO and founder and her husband Joe Kayl, Financial Officer for Paint & Fire Pottery, LLC, own and operate this unique business in Granbury Texas. The couple, who moved to Granbury in 1997 and began their business at Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth, opened Paint & Fire Pottery on Hwy. 377 in their adopted hometown earlier this year. They bill their business as a therapeutic art and creative learning center specializing in memory care,

shut-ins, creative art classes and education. At Paint & Fire Pottery, Rosanne and Joe provide the glazes, in many colors, as well as the firing. They also offer a large inventory of bisque pieces with items for just about any décor and any age. Two kilns are available to fire pieces in and Joe runs the kilns along with being their clear glazer and greenware cleaner. “Loved it!!” remarked a party guest, “It was hard to choose which object to paint from all the pieces available, but when we finally chose one we all had a great time!” The Kayls say, “There’s no time limit for groups, events or parties.” They encourage you to

Children and adults alike are encouraged to get creative and participate in an experience that might be unique to them but will surely turn out to be a lifetime memory. Peppers! Spicing up dinner in the New World for as long as we can remember. September is prime time for rich, vibrant peppers. Look for bell peppers, jalapeños, poblanos and more. Squash! Summer squash and winter

squash collide in farmers’ markets this

Directions 1. Preheat an outdoor grill for mediumhigh heat, and lightly oil the grate. (can be done in the oven under the broiler) 2. Slice the zucchini lengthwise into ¼ in thick strips. 3. Mix the butter, garlic, and parsley in a bowl, and spread the mixture on both sides of each zucchini slice. 4. Place the slices, crosswise on the preheated grill to keep them from falling through. 5. When grill marks appear turn zucchini and sprinkle the cooked side of each slice with parmesan cheese. 6. Continue to grill the zucchini until the cheese has melted and the slices are cooked through, about 4 minutes

Shopping Local Makes Everyone Feel Good!

SHOPPING

At

the most basic level, when you buy local, more money stays in the community. But buying close to home may have an even larger part to play in the economic health of a community than any of us are aware of. David Boyle, NEF researcher and author says, “Money is like blood, it needs to keep moving around to keep the economy going. When money is spent elsewhere, at big supermarkets and on-line retailers for example, it flows out like a wound.” So shopping at the corner store instead of the big- box prevents the local economy from “bleeding-out” and slowly dying. Another appealing argument for shopping local and foregoing online retailers can be made when you consider our basic human needs. A visit to your favorite boutique or local grocery is very often a treat for the senses. Take in the colorful and beautiful displays of local merchandise and unique items as you stroll

around. Enjoy the aroma of candles and perfumes or the smell of a ripe peach, fuzzy to the touch and bursting with the flavor of summer. A journey out into the community might also result in running across an old acquaintance or some other serendipitous event that you would have missed out on by simply sitting in front of your computer screen. An added plus to all of this is the beneficial exercise boost when you choose to get up and get out! What about the higher cost of local goods? After all, the prices at big-box stores are generally lower. That difference falls away once you consider the increase in local employment as well as the relationships that grow when people buy from the people they know. After all, it just feels good to give back to your local community and help support shop owners and small business people. Neighbors helping neighbors…it doesn’t get better than that!
