Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
It’s Busy, BOOOtiful, October!! As fall ushers in cooler temperatures and the leaves begin their yearly spectacular color show, folks are, once again, opening windows and emerging from their air-conditioned summer hibernation. In celebration of the weather and all things fall, our communities are gearing up for a plethora of fun and frightening activities this October. The first weekend in October Oakdale Park in Glen Rose hosts their annual Fall Bluegrass Festival with a weekend chock full of some of the best bluegrass music around. Two great fall events will be held on Saturday, October 15th. The Harvest Moon festival of the Arts is an annual arts festival held in Granbury, Texas. A collaborative effort between the Historic Granbury Merchant’s Association and the Granbury Arts Alliance, the fun starts at 9a.m. and lasts till 8p.m. The festival showcases many forms of artistic expression. With well over 50 fine art and contemporary craft gallery booths, this event is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. You will find unique pieces at every turn, food vendors, and live music all weekend long. A new event for the town of Aledo is premiering on October 15th as well. Aledo-Fest will be held from 1 to 5p.m. at the Aledo Church of Christ grounds. Similar to the First Friday events that you have come to know and love, it will feature a free concert with a local band and many activities for kids of all ages. Train rides, bounce houses, face painting, chalk art, vendor booths, pony rides and food trucks are just a few of the treats in store at this carnival style festival that’s sure to be an annual event for Aledo! Come celebrate the season with Chandor Gardens at their annual Autumn Art Walk! Food, music, and fun stroll hand-in-hand throughout the beautiful garden as local artists offer up an eclectic lineup of custom-crafted jewelry, colorful paintings, one-of-a-kind crafts, and handmade musical instruments. This is a perfect opportunity to do a little pre-Christmas shopping for items you will never find anywhere else...or spoil yourself with a little something all your own. Talk with the artists about what inspires them and you may find new inspirations, too. Sit back and relax as local musicians soothe your senses. The fun begins Sunday, October 23rd at 12 noon and admission is only $1 per person!
On October 30th princesses and puppies, ghosts and ghouls, superheroes and spiders all come together at Chandor Gardens during their Goblins In the Garden festival. Kids love to show off their Halloween costumes a little early, and this spookfree event is the perfect opportunity for even the youngest goblins to get into the action. Candy stations all around the garden let the whole family discover the secret treasures that make Chandor Gardens truly magical. For more information you can check out the activities pages of the magazine. Whether you’re from Granbury, or you’re just visiting this Halloween season, there are plenty of festive fun activities to enjoy this year. A day of family fun in a pumpkin patch, spending the evening Haunt hunting with friends or attending the Annual Granscary event at the Hood County Reunion Grounds. The Granscary event will be held October 28-31 and includes a haunted house tour staged in the Livestock Barn, games, music, a bounce house, a fortune teller, hay rides and more! The Parker County Historical Society’s Talking Tombstone Tour takes place on October 22 and this year’s theme will be “Small Town Civility 1861-1865”. The first tour begins at 1p.m. and the last tour begins at 3p.m. at City Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford. Costumed actors will be stationed around the cemetery telling the stories of various citizens buried at the historic burial ground. First Annual Pumpkin Walk Trick-or-Treat in downtown Weatherford will be held October 29th from 1 to 4 p.m. Stores with pumpkins placed outside the door will be participating and parents and kids alike are welcome to dress up and trick-or-treat. Participating stores will be located on York Avenue, North Main Street and on the square. The free event is sponsored by the City of Weatherford Main Street Program and Downtown Merchants. Finally, a festive botanical treat awaits your family at Clark Gardens Bootanical and Costume Competition on October 31st from 4 to 8p.m. Dress up in your most creative costume ideas and join in the family friendly fun.

OCTOBER BRINGS IN CHILLS AND THRILLS Chilly air is right around the corner and autumn promises big fun at the box office. October is the perfect month for spooks and spoofs alike. However, if “boo” and spine chilling tingles aren’t exactly your thing, you’ve lucked out… there’s more on the menu this month than just gore and freight. Delight (or scare) yourself in a darkened, glowing theatre as Friend Request hits the big screen
on October 7th. Enjoying college life as a popular student, Laura shares everything with her more than 800 friends on Facebook. But one day, after accepting a friend request from a social outcast named Marina, Laura’s life is cursed, and her closest friends begin dying cruel deaths. Before her time is up, Laura must solve the mystery behind Marina and her Facebook profile, in order to break the deadly spell. Starring Alycia Carey and Brit Morgan.
Ouija: Origin of Evil will be battling for the biggest thrill draw of all nearing this Hallow’s Eve. A group of unsuspecting friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they unleash an evil from the other side that

only they can send back. This is a sequel to the 2014 original sleeper hit. In a true thrill ride, 31 opens in theatres on October 21st. The horrific story of five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large compound. At the mercy of their captors, they are forced to play a twisted game of life or death called 31. For the next 12 hours they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs. In a not-so-scary scenario, the grand dame of hooligan comedy is back in Tyler Perry’s Boo: A Madea Halloween. In Boo! A Madea Halloween, Madea winds up in the middle of mayhem when she spends a hilarious, haunted Halloween fending off killers, paranormal poltergeists, ghosts, ghouls, and zombies while keeping a watchful eye on a group of misbehaving teens.
Whatever your viewing pleasure this Hallow’s Eve, be sure to enjoy the brisk weather and free candy. Happy Halloween! FUN FACT: The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl’s call meant someone was about to die. THE TEXAS OPRY THEATER OFFERS THE BEST IN LIVE NAME ENTERTAINMENT IN THE WEST-O-PLEX!
Gene Watson and The Farewell Party Band Returns October 15th - This masterful country stylist from Houston, Texas has been
thrilling audiences for more than 50 years. Gene’s very first radio single, the self-penned “If It’s That Easy” was released in 1962 so the entertainer is celebrating his 50 years in the music business, the man now known as “The Singer’s Singer.” Gene Watson’s tally of 75 charted titles, 23 top-10 hits and 6 number-one records has led to membership in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Radio listeners are still transfixed whenever classics like “Farewell Party,” “Fourteen Carat Mind” or “Love in the Hot Afternoon” are played. The depth of emotion in his singing, his brilliant phrasing, his jaw-dropping range and the power in the lyrics he chooses are all factors in the awe he inspires in both fans and his musical peers. Opening the show is The Traditional Country Music Queen AMBER DIGBY with The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band.
THEATRE OFF THE SQUARE IN WEATHERFORD Wait Until Dark is written by Frederick Knott and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. ctober already? It’s time for pumpkin spice and everything nice. Naturally, produce peaks at different times in different areas of the U.S., so this is a general guide to the produce you’ll likely find at farmers’ markets in North Central Texas around this time of year. You’ll find some short preparation tips for each type of produce, plus one of my quick and easy recipes at the end!

attention it deserves. Its vitamin-rich, hydrating qualities make it an excellent juicing ingredient. Peeled, muddled and strained cucumber makes an incredibly refreshing cocktail. Cucumber water is a treat—just soak cucumber and lemon slices in a pitcher of water.
Kale is so hot right now. I love to chop kale for stir-fries, or massage it with a dash of salt for salads, or lightly coat roughly chopped kale with olive oil and roast it for kale chips. You can also blend kale into smoothies or juice it. Pears are generally more grainy than their cousins, the apple, and ripeness is fleeting. They are delicious, however. Pears pair well (see what I did there?) with blue cheese and balsamic vinegar in sweetand-savory salads. In desserts, they’re lovely with warming spices, cream, honey and lemon. My fav is caramelized pear with fresh cracked black pepper and blue cheese!
Broccoli is one of those poor

Cucumber doesn’t always get the
cruciferous vegetables that has gotten a bad rap due to poor cooking methods (it’s no wonder kids don’t like overcooked steamed broccoli). I love raw broccoli florets on vegetable platters or in salads. It becomes totally irresistible once roasted with olive oil and sea salt. Broccoli goes great with lemon, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes and other bold flavors. Select small, tightly packed florets with minimal brown spots.
Cauliflower! Roasting cauliflower
with olive oil and sea salt transforms the cruciferous vegetable from bland to French-fry irresistible. You can also pulse raw cauliflower in the food processor to give it a rice- or couscouslike texture. I am skeptical about cauliflower crust pizza, but plan on trying it soon. I will let you know how it turns out!
Corn is still going strong! It’s hard
to beat corn grilled in its husk, served with butter and salt. To avoid genetically modified corn, buy organic.
Pumpkins! Everybody loves pumpkin,
right? As you well know, pumpkin goes nicely with warming spices, like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves (all the standard ingredients in pumpkin pie mix). Roast fresh pumpkin for savory dishes or toss it into the food processor to make homemade pumpkin purée. (The moisture content in homemade pumpkin purées can vary significantly, which is why most bakers opt for canned.)
Sweet Potatoes! I used to hate sweet potatoes! Then I tried a sweet potato mash with cream and butter, awesome! Then came sweet potato fry again a winner! I still don’t enjoy sweetened, mashed sweet potatoes, but I could live off of salted, caramelized, roasted sweet potato. I especially love sweet potato pancakes! October in North Central Texas can also give us arugula, green beans, eggplant, persimmons, fresh peas, red potatoes, and lots and lots of fresh herbs. Shopping Local Makes Everyone Feel Good! Jeans Crossing Boutique represents a lifestyle which embraces fashion while still maintaining your funky independence.
C
SHOPPING
arolyn Moore went to work for Jeans Crossing in 1979 when it was located on the Square and only sold jeans and tee shirts, thus the name Jeans Crossing. After several moves, a buyout, and a retirement, Carolyn became the owner. Since that time she has created a true upscale, top quality and affordable boutique with a lot more than just jeans.
Designated as a BRIGHTON HEART STORE, Jeans Crossing Boutique always has the latest that Brighton has to offer… Jewelry, Handbags, Charms, and Home & Gift. For the month of October, JCB is participating in the POWER OF PINK for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness.
With the purchase of a Power of Pink Bracelet, a portion of the proceeds will go to support this worthy cause. Carolyn has brought in many well known popular brands like JOHNNY WAS, who specializes in vintage inspired designs, IVY JANE – UNCLE FRANK, who are known for their Boho Chic style of clothing. On-Trend fashions from TRIBAL, FDJ, JAG, GRETTY ZUEGER, KUT From the Kloth and lots more. She also offers FREEBIRD BOOTS by Steve Madden, flawlessly distressed and inspired by vintage Americana along with unique jewelry creations for the free-spirited from JULIO DESIGNS.
