ugust is here and school will be starting soon. Everyone that has kids or grandkids is thinking about buying clothes, school supplies and preparing the kids for band, volleyball and football. (Don’t forget sales tax free weekend, August 9-11). This is the last chance for a vacation before school starts. I have a theory that if you work hard then you deserve to have some fun. What could be more fun than going to the Brazos Drive-In, or going out to eat at one of our famous restaurants? If you like music, then check out our music venue. A lot of people drive from Fort Worth, Dallas and Austin to eat and have fun in Glen Rose and Granbury, Texas. If you want to be treated like royalty, then this is the place. We have so many people that come from the metroplex on a regular basis to enjoy our hospitality. If you want to have fun, this is the best place to do it. I want to say a little about our resale shops. I have been talking to some of the owners. They have a lot of requests for name brand clothes. The way I see it, if you can save a few dollars or make a few dollars, then why not? There are a lot of bargains in clothes, furniture and kitchenware. Also, there are a lot of collectors’ items for sale at reasonable prices. We have had some tragic events happen in Granbury and Hood County lately. Tornados demolished many homes that left people homeless. Our first responders, while protecting us from danger were killed or injured themselves. Everyone knows what happened. If you don’t, then Google it. The point I want to make is our businesses,

our churches, and our non-profits in Hood and Somervell counties have pitched in and gone above and beyond to help the victims. Many of the businesses and individuals that helped may never be heard about or recognized. We are lucky to have these businesses and organizations in our community. We can support them by spending our money here. It is fun to help others.

ompetitive off-shore sailing, Disney World, Corvettes and watercolors – what’s the connection? And the answer is: Robert W. Cook, or simply, Bob Cook. As a youngster, Cook loved to draw. While delivering newspapers for the Kansas City Star, the young entrepreneur met Jules Scheffer, an illustrator now famous for his prints and the production techniques he developed. Scheffer, after seeing Cook’s portfolio at age twelve, agreed to hire him -- after high school graduation. And he did. It was there that Cook learned valuable skills he later employed as Owner/President at Prelim, Inc., a large architectural illustration firm.
Cook found his way inland again, settling in Dallas, Prelim’s home. Prelim specialized in creating architectural renderings when a structure was just a dream. Enter the Disney connection. Years before Cook became a student at the Kansas City Art Institute, Walt Disney had been a student……..but was dismissed. Rumor has it that he preferred drawing silly little animals over developing serious artwork. Years later, however, Cook was chosen to render the developing Disney World complex. You get the picture and the scope. Cook discovered his wife, Carol, about 22 years ago. She introduced him to her passion
– cars, specifically, Corvettes. Out with sail boats, in with speedy automobiles. Oh, how love can change things. Bob
Cook became a level one judge, then “learned his way up” to becoming a master judge. Some of his artwork reflects his new Corvette passion. After a slightly circuitous route, Bob and Carol purchased very rough river front property in Pecan Plantation. While clearing the land and spending more and more time commuting from Dallas to Granbury, Carol found her dream location--a hilltop peninsula overlooking Granbury. They sold the river front land and renovated the property with a view to fit their approaching lifestyle. Computers replaced artistic
Along the way, Cook studied at the Kansas City Art Institute at Baker University before moving to Florida. No longer land-locked, Cook discovered the thrill of and learned the skills involved in off-shore sailing and racing. He sailed everything from dinghies to racing yachts. Last year, Cook was honorary captain of Dennis Conner’s Stars and Stripes 87 in a 12 Metre Challenge against other former America’s Cup racing yachts around St. Maarten. Cook’s yacht won. 6 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Bob spends his days creating stunning watercolors, and is currently developing a series of New Orleans scenes. One piece, Twilight on Bourbon, won Best of Show in the recent and highly competitive “Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit” in Brownwood, Texas. Two of his other works were juried into the show, a feat in itself. Cook feels that his experience at Prelim has given him tools to create quality work efficiently. Probably has. What is most impressive, however, is that rather than resting on “what works easily”, he is purposely setting up creative situations that are more and more challenging. Robert’s works can be viewed and purchased

Country Woods Inn
Country Woods Inn Bed and Breakfast is located on a 40-acre farm nestled within a 100-year old pecan orchard near the historic Glen Rose square.
T
here are six secluded century old cabins and a guest house, a main lodge and a restored Santa Fe railcar. You are out in the country but you are within walking distance to all downtown square shopping opportunities in Glen Rose. The Inn is next to the Paluxy River where you can play in the clear water or sunbath on the big rocks. Country Woods Inn was once a farm that raised vegetables for the community on its very fertile land. Helen Kerwin, the owner has very fond memories of her family living here and is glad to share the stories with you. She has all kinds of farm animals. Each animal has its own personality and they
are fun to watch and pet. She has a horse, goats, pigs, chickens, and deer.
This Bed and Breakfast is not just for eating and sleeping but it is a place to have fun and relax. Helen has kept the family home and buildings in pristine condition and has added a few local historical buildings that were going to be torn down. Country Woods is for big kids and little kids alike. Not only do the children love it, but they can stay occupied while adults take a nap under the trees in a hammock. While I was visiting, I saw Daniel, a guest at Country Woods Inn, catching butterflies. This reminded me of a simpler life when I was a child. Some of those things you can do here are: playing croquet, climbing trees and hills, petting the animals and running bare foot thru the fields. Times have sure changed everywhere but here. You can explore all the hidden treasures, such as listening to the water of the river,

feeling the wind blow through the pecan trees, or just looking at a clear sky to see the stars. You can feed carrots to the rabbits, hunt for fossils, watch the deer or sit around one of the camp fire circles. You have many fun things to do in the surrounding area that most bed and breakfasts don’t have, such as walking where the dinosaurs walked millions of years ago. Discover the beauty of your family while sharing in the simpler pleasures of life. Birdsong mornings. Firefly evenings and good old fashioned fun inbetween at the Country
Woods Inn Bed and Breakfast, Glen Rose, Texas.

THEATRE
his fun, high energy musical takes a collection of Elvis Presley songs to form the backdrop of this story about a mysterious, leatherjacketed stranger who shakes up a small Midwestern town in the 1950s. Helps them to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. Librettist Joe DiPietro’s tale of the cross-dressing, mistaken identity and romance that ensue was inspired by Twelfth Night and other Shakespearean comedies. A show full of rock and roll hits and choreography to keep your toes tapping. Directed by Jodi and Sonni Barrus. Among the 27 songs featured in the score are classics like “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me
Tender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and of course the title tune “All Shook Up”. Musical direction by Duncan Mcmahan Plays July 19th - August 24th Show times Thurs –Friday 7:30 Saturday 3:30 and 7:30 Call for tickets 817-579-0952 or order online at Granburytheatrecompany.org Photo Credits: Teri Ewing

MUSIC
A
four piece phenomenon delivers a full force of energy with a mix of rock, blues, and funk while still maintaining that Texas Country vibe. Front man Mike Stanley describes their sound in a local radio interview as,”...the farthest thing from Texas country music but still is somehow Texas country.” This Stephenville country band resides all around Granbury, Dallas, and Fort Worth. They are all originally Texas natives claiming central, southwest Texas as their stomping grounds. You can hear MSB almost anywhere in Texas, but they like to play at Bostocks Billiards & Bar in Stephenville and The Dock on Lake Granbury. Bostocks is like home, since they have a lot of fans in Stephenville. But, it is a little far for their Dallas and Fort Worth fans. The Dock is just right. It’s not too far from Dallas and Fort Worth and not too far from Stephenville. The band is currently in production of their new album. They have been working hard to produce their new album and it should be out some time later this year. For all their fans this is good news. Right now you can hear some of their new releases at local venues. Check out our calendar in the center of the magazine or on Reverbnation. com for other venues. MSB has a unique sound and Mike Stanley music is all original. Let’s say it is custom made for the band. MSB music comes from personal emotional experiences that Mike has experienced, which makes it easy for his fans to connect.
Take some time and listen to the playlist on http:// www.reverbnation.com/ mikestanleymusic. Take time to go to The Dock in Granbury or Bostocks in Stephenville, because you will be glad you did.
Band Members:
Mike Stanley: lead vocals, rhythm guitar Seth Haney (Hippie): lead guitar Greg Ufers: bass/backup vocals Joey Tolle: drums/backup vocals These four friends, all from different walks of life as well as musical backgrounds, came together in hopes of creating a new and fresh sound that’s unlike any other band currently on the scene.

he Pie Peddlers is on the historic square in Glen Rose. Their pies are scrumptious, delicious and 100 percent homemade. I really enjoyed visiting with Jean Ford and Rhonda Cagle about their homemade pies. These ladies are fast when it comes to making pies. But, they skip no steps in the process. They are like a fine tuned instrument in harmony as they work. As busy as they were, there was no stress. You can have a wonderful time eating pie and talking while they take care of you. People are asked where they are from, and they come from everywhere to eat pie. Just in the short time I was there, they had people from Georgia, Austin, Cisco, and of course Granbury and Glen Rose. One person said they drove all day to get some pie. I understand that they have had customers from as far away as Germany and Australia. Jean and Rhonda are school teachers. They taught kindergarten in Glen Rose before they retired. They have
a story about their students. If you were one of their students, you get a free piece of pie when you stop by the Pie Peddlers. Together they have thirty years of teaching, and that would be a lot of students to give a free piece of pie to. Their students are not shy. They had some high school students that started coming in once a week, but don’t worry, they felt guilty about getting pie every week so they started bringing friends so, at least some of the pie slices were paid for. I am sure you would even bring your parents for a deal like that. Now let’s tell you what others think about the ladies at Pie Peddlers. They were voted best pies in Texas by the viewers of the Texas Country Reporter. The Austin Chronicle also had a story about them in their column, Day Trips. These ladies are well known all over Texas. Also, they have nearly 1,000 likes on Facebook. When you first enter the pie shop, you are welcomed by one

of the servers. You get the full smell of the delicious baked pies and then you are shown the pies. After you make a selection, you are asked if you would like a slice or a full pie. Now if that’s not heaven, I don’t know what is. Not one person left without at least eating one piece of pie. Pie Peddlers makes pies for parties, wedding receptions, office parties, church luncheons, and as gifts. You can’t get these pies anywhere else and they don’t ship the pies. Just remember, pie is good anytime, and you can always treat yourself and stop by the Pie Peddlers on the square in Glen Rose and get the freshest, most delicious pie anywhere! The menu consists of:
CREAM PIES FRUIT PIES Chocolate Apple Buttermilk Cherry Lemon Chess Strawberry Rhubarb Lemon Blackberry Key Lime Every Berry Pie Coconut Pecan Coconut Caramel The Pie Peddlers is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 10-6; Sunday 11-4 and Monday Holidays. So, be sure to check this schedule before you drive all day. But, it is absolutely, definitely worth the drive! 102 Walnut Street Glen Rose TX 76043 Phone 254-897-4904
