Happy New Year! 2014 Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

In preparation for a new year most of us think of the days leading up to January 1st as a time for setting things straight: a thorough housecleaning, paying off debts, returning borrowed objects, reflecting on one’s shortcomings, mending quarrels, giving alms. In many cultures, people jump into the sea or a local body of water…literally washing the slate clean. Whatever preparations are made, most traditions say that they should be completed before midnight on New Year’s Eve. According to British folklore, you should not sweep on New Year’s Day, or you will sweep

your good luck away, or take anything out of the house… even trash. You only want to bring new things in to insure abundance in the coming year. If you must carry something out, be sure to bring something else in first, preferably a coin concealed outside the previous night. Everything you do on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day is full of significance for the future. The American custom of spending the night with the one you love and kissing them at midnight insures that the relationship will flourish during the coming year. In some towns in Italy, you have to watch out for falling

objects, as people shove their old sofas, chairs and even refrigerators out of their windows on New Year’s Eve. In Ecuador, people make dummies, stuffed with straw, to represent the events of the past year and then burn them at midnight, symbolically getting rid of the past. For centuries, and in similar ways, people have been observing the end of one year and the beginning of another. But, no matter where you call home, the beginning of the New Year means a fresh start. As Oprah once toasted, “Cheers to a New Year and another chance to get it

right!” Or, maybe, instead of making a New Year’s resolution to lose twenty pounds or make the next big step in a career or even to “get it right” we could simply decide to live and love with an open heart in the coming year, mistakes and all…now that’s a resolution we can uphold each and every day! With warm wishes for a wonderful New Year from all of us at “My Hometowns Texas”.

Danny Lee

An “upscale garage sale”

down to the smallest detail. Danny has worked as an interior designer for twelve years but originally wanted to be an architect. His love for interior design rose to the surface when he was a student at the University of North Texas studying architecture and led him to pursue a career in the design business.

O

n the historic downtown square in Weatherford the garage sale business is going strong at S7C, or Studio 7 Collections, an interior design business owned by twin brothers Danny and Jimmy Lee. Originally dubbed an art gallery/design shop and located in Fort Worth, the brothers decided to move west with their venture with the hopes of finding a place with a more smalltown feel. Weatherford fit the bill and turned out to be a better place for the business. Danny credits the Weatherford Chamber for helping them get noticed by the community, something the larger and less personal Fort Worth Chamber wasn’t able to accomplish. The Lee’s say they are meeting more locals each day who have found out about them and want to see what they are all about.

Home Open Wednesday through Saturday from 11a.m. to 6p.m., the design studio consists of high quality items that are left over from design jobs that the client either decided not to use or were more than they needed. The Lees are able to offer their services

6 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

on anything from one or two rooms up to a completely redesigned home. They are also working on developing a home management business which would encompass the complete needs of the homeowners to efficiently and effectively run homes and rental properties

The brothers are also looking into opening an art gallery in Weatherford sometime this year. An art gallery, an interior design shop, a home management business and who knows what else the future holds for these brothers. As Lee says, “You have to take some risks in life. What’s the worst thing that can happen? You close up shop and you move again.” Maybe the small-town life will encourage them to put down roots in their new hometown of Weatherford. his duo composed of Grant Gilbert and Dylan Price are a new and young, but very ambitious group. They started performing for audiences this past summer and already have had several gigs. To be successful so quickly shows a natural talent. Both are from Santo, TX, and play every sport at their high school, as well as rehearsing for their performances. Grant plays both the guitar and fiddle, and Dylan plays lead guitar and harmonica.. They love to perform true country music.

Grant has already written a few songs. One called, “Praying for Light”, that they performed at Papa Chulo’s in Granbury

recently, was amazing and showed Grant’s songwriting ability, as well as his passion for Texas country music. Some of their influences are: Gary Stewart, Glen Campbell, and Turnpike Troubadours. When Grant was asked if they were ready to sing in front of an audience, his response was, “I think we are.” And, they definitely are ready to roll with it. “Besides, it’s better than mowing lawns,” quipped Grant. Grant and Dylan have several shows in the next couple of months, and you will certainly be missing out if you don’t attend one as their success continues to build.

Freshly Baked Bread and a Whole Lot More!

he had cooked himself from beginning to end. He didn’t start with the idea of a lot of seating or even serving lots of people each day. “My vision was for something very small, a couple of community tables and a bakery case” says Jeff. But he underestimated the public’s desire for fresh, from scratch, foods and the eatery quickly went from a couple of tables to

DINING

What began as an outlet for Jeff Carr’s love of baking bread has quickly turned into a thriving restaurant in a unique location. As one diner commented “You would never know this place was here, unless you were shopping for a stove! It is really a byword-of-mouth place. My husband found it through some co-workers.” Tucked inside a corner of David’s Stove Shop on Fort Worth Hwy., The Shed shares space with everything from stoves and antiques to tractor supplies in the large barn-like structure owned by David Clack. Jeff considers himself very lucky to have had David offer him a spot inside his store to establish what he had imagined as, “a little hole-in-the-wall”, where people could pick up a loaf of fresh sourdough or a sandwich prepared with ingredients

seating for twenty five and now seats about sixty five guests. It is not unusual for them to have a line from the cash register down the hall and out the door. Although Jeff still manages to bake the breads, cook the meats and do everything fresh, he now has five employees and his mom who help him manage the chaos. A typical day at The Shed starts at 3 a.m. and lasts about sixteen hours in order to get everything done. Even though there is no sign and they have done no advertising, the restaurant serves as many as two hundred hungry customers during a busy lunch!

Open since November, 2011, The Shed’s customers continue to be loyal, vocal and very supportive. “Everything is freshly prepared and tastes like it. The sandwiches are HUGE and they have a large selection that they build on their homemade bread, scrumptious burgers, a soup of the day, and bakery items like cookies, pies, and of course, bread. My husband, daughter and I went on a Saturday and practically waddled out! It was delicious,” claims one of their many satisfied customers. Every sandwich is a meal in itself at this wonderful little gem, but leave room for the soup du jour. From creamy lobster bisque to chicken noodle, their soup is so good you’ll be tempted to lick the bowl clean!

clientele. With cheerful, helpful and efficient staff and excellent food, The Shed is one of those restaurants where you will see friends and neighbors running into each other and reconnecting daily. “The fact that this little restaurant is attached to an antique store will bring me back to spend an entire afternoon. Wonderful food and unique finds under one roof… another definition of Heaven!” says a customer who recently discovered this hidden treasure. For Jeff Carr, The Shed is a labor of love that starts each day with the aroma of freshly baked bread…lucky for us… we are the beneficiaries of his delicious dream!
