ne of the fun things a family can do in Granbury is to load up and go to The Brazos Drive-In movie theater. You can take all the kids and they have room to play and not have to sit still, or they can even sleep. You can bring your own food and drinks, or buy some really good nachos, hot dogs and popcorn at the concession stand. You don’t have to be super quiet or step over someone and block their view to go to the restroom. Your dog can even go too. The Brazos opened in 1952, and has operated continuously since then. It is a family run business, with most of the employees staying for several years. Brenda Stewart, has been the manager for 18 years. Remember when you were young and you went to your first drive-in? Maybe you are young, and The Brazos is your first drivein. There are people who came as children, then brought their children, and are now bringing their grandchildren. Most of the movies are PG-13 or G. It is a safe, fun environment for the entire family to enjoy. So, what if The Brazos goes dark at the end of the year? Will you miss

it? Will you have to find a sitter for your kids, so you can go to the regular theater? Will you wish you had done something to help save the drive-in? Well, there is something you can do – and it doesn’t cost you anything but a minute of your time! Since all movie theaters have to upgrade to digital by the end of the year, Honda is sponsoring a contest to give away five digital projectors through Project Drive-in’s “Save an American Icon”. So, why not take a minute each day and text and email your votes to help keep The Brazos open for your family and your community!

riving by a cute house with a great garden area near Granbury’s historic square provided to be too tempting in 2007 for mother & artist daughter, Linda & Stacey Watkins. Without great thought, let alone a business plan, the lease was signed and Your Private Collection Art Gallery went from idea to reality. After redesigning the space, the Gallery was opened in June, showcasing Stacey’s artwork of her personally created resin medium that absorbs natural UV from daylight and expels that energy with darkness, responding with glowing and change of colors. Stacey brought with her great artist friends’ works from Dallas, initially, like watercolorist Jane Stevenson, glass artist, Brad Abrams, glass carver Polly Gessell, metal artists Wallace Dean and Laura Abrams, etc. That was the gallery in 2007, but in 2008, a wonderful opportunity opened up a whole new direction – space became available right on the square With the move to 106 N Houston, the decision was made to focus on regional, national, and international awarded artists of many different mediums. Soon Young Warren

from south Fort Worth, who at that time had been the number one watercolorist in the nation six times, was wooed to the gallery along with “Color of the West” artist, Sharon Markwardt, from Burleson. Soon, Sharon and Stacey became the anchor artists of the gallery along with rotating artists in pottery, blown glass, textiles, jewelry, and sculpture as well as abstract and realism wall art. During the last five years, the Gallery has established a relationship with close to one hundred artists, allowing them to fill a client’s wishes for unique, original art. The Gallery and its artists have grown together. In 2009, the Gallery and Stacey’s art was stated as a “must see” by Southern Living Magazine. Artists Soon Y Warren, Sharon Markwardt and Stacey have been featured in magazines, newspaper and television programs, including the April 27 Texas Country Reporter. Over these past five years, Soon and Sharon have become some of the most published artists with articles in International Artists, Art of the West, Southwest Art, Western Art Collector, etc. In fact, Sharon has become a popular artist in Santa Fe, and Soon is now a register artist in the Library of Congress.

square and into the Gallery to see their works. The Gallery carries a selection of art that means collectors don’t have to go to Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Santa Fe or Arizona, to see and buy great works. In fact, several artists like award winning Robert Cook, whose work was one of just 84 paintings accepted from 933 entrees for the prestigious 2013 National Watercolor Society’s exhibition, have opted to have Your Private Collection be their exclusive representative. Something the Gallery is proud to have been instrumental in is the establishment of the Galleries of Granbury group and a monthly, free art walk named “Last Saturday Gallery Night”. On the last Saturday of each month, Artefactz, Gallery at Granbury Theater, LGAA Shanley House, Dora Langdon Center Art Gallery, and Yeats-Duke Cabin working museum host the art walk. They each feature a guest artist, gallery talks, refreshments and fun. In August, Your Private Collection featured

[ APC males during the breeding season with more visitors!

Fossil Rim’s Children’s Animal Center

F

ossil Rim’s Children’s Animal Center (CAC) was built in 1989 to provide an environment for suburban and inner city children to see AND interact with domestic and exotic species. Lots of people also affectionately call the CAC “The Petting Zoo” or “The Halfway Point.” No matter what it’s called, those who are familiar know it’s one of the best places in Glen Rose to visit for free, tucked away off County Road 2009. The CAC is where you’ll meet some friendly goats, greet Einstein the famous emu and get to know other curious critters. No visit is complete without a journey to the Overlook Café for a burger or to the Nature Store for a t-shirt or a toy. Today, Fossil Rim’s dream for the CAC is to change the focus from a simple hands-on experience to an interactive and educational experience for ALL Fossil Rim visitors, not just children. What would this look like if Fossil Rim could do it the way they pictured it in their mind’s eye? Ideally, the new CAC would literally be a hotbed of activity for children and adults alike, and serve as a gathering area for guests

and staff to interact together. The CAC is where everyone would come before setting off to explore the awesome birding and nature trails. It’s also where guests could see highlights of efforts with the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken and other threatened Texas species currently only seen on private tours. And last, but certainly not least, this is the place where Fossil Rim would educate its visitors about current research, conservation and captive breeding practices.

In keeping with the goal of finishing the aviaries, there is another character of the avian type currently living at the CAC, but it’s not a prairie chicken from the coastal plains of Texas, not even close. He’s a bright green fellow with a candy corn beak and his name is Nick. He’s quite the exotic bird - native to some islands far, far away – the Solomon and Moluccas Islands. His type of bird could even be from as far away as northern Australia and New Guinea. Nick is an eclectus parrot, a very interesting bird, who really needs a girlfriend. He hasn’t had a mate since the late 90’s, but there is no room for a Mrs. until the aviaries are completed. Did you know the whole process of introducing a Mr. and Mrs. Eclectus Parrot is completely fascinating? First, the lucky lady is quarantined for a bit while they get to know each other “from afar.” Secondly, the females are red and blue with an all-black beak,

they look completely different from the guys! Eclectus parrots have one of the most extreme sexual dimorphisms (differences) among parrot species; it was thought for many years that they were of a completely different species. This love affair will definitely be one to remember. Inroads have been made in the funding process and things are looking hopeful. However, there is still much to be done and your help will be greatly appreciated. To make a donation today, visit http://tinyurl.com/kf9vdrl, or call 254.-897.-2960 for more details.

Help Nick, raise some serious scratch so he can get a lifelong mate. Please be sure to like Fossil Rim on Facebook and stay informed about all our conservation efforts.. By Lynn Rogers, and Amber Wiedeman

How does this begin to happen? Where does one start to create such a unique gathering place? In the case of the CAC, it makes the most sense to begin with the completion of the existing CAC aviaries, specifically to create the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken habitat mentioned above. It’s been an impressive and exciting year for Fossil Rim’s Prairie Chicken release program, releasing almost HALF of the total birds for the whole state back into their native habitat. With the completion of CAC’s aviaries, more Fossil Rim guests will experience the unique and entertaining behaviors of this endangered native Texas bird. What a treat it will be to share the booming dance of the

Snakes Alive!

So

I rolled 200,000 miles in my old Ford truck and figured I would celebrate with an oil change. Found the stuff down at the big box store and it was all good until I tried to leave the auto department. Some fool had installed a display of brand new car stereos right in my way, and I became instantly bedazzled by the charms of glowing blue lights, swanky CD slots, and a place to plug in my eye fone… all for a hunnerd bucks! Danged if I’m ready for God’s check-out lane quite yet, so I scooped it up and decided maybe there was life after cassettes. New tunes and new oil…won’t Babydoll be pleased with me. Well, I slapped that new oil in there in twenty minutes, wiped down my hands and got ready to play electrical genius. How hard could it be? Well, three hours of grunting, groaning, banging, yanking, and pleading for mercy later, I was cursing the punk who designed this contraption. Musta had an attitude and a beef with men in their 50’s ‘cause I hadn’t had my mind blown like that since Rod Stewart went disco. I decided enough was enough, and re-installed the old twelve-pound cassette player. Babydoll seemed okay with that, and I felt pretty good until I turned it on and all I got was fuzz. Looked down to see I had not plugged the stupid antenna wire back into the unit. I groaned a little, then decided if I just played cassette tapes all the time, I’d be fine. It was gittin’ dark, so I went down to shut the chicken house

and collect eggs. Danged if there wasn’t a big ole rat snake all curled up in the nest box, with an egg halfway swallowed and two more lumps a little further down. Now I’m a peaceable fellow, and I realize everybody’s got to eat, but this was not going to cut it. I grabbed a hoe and a feed sack, and with the skill of a trick-roper, flicked that snake right into that sack --- first try, thank you very much. I rolled the sack down tight, stuck it in the truck, and headed for the house, figuring I’d let him go in the morning as I passed by a nice patch of woods. Next morning, I was driving to work when I looked down and saw that antenna wire was hanging loose, so I reached down to tuck it back up…and it coiled around my hand! Holy mackerel and a flap my lower lip! I’m not exactly sure of how it all happened, but within the next two seconds, I screamed, hit both the gas and the brake with the same foot, flung open the door, and thanked God for the seat belt ‘cause I was still doin’ about 35 mph. I whipped over to the side, threw it in neutral, and baled out. After I caught my breath, I realized I was going to have to get back in there and drive, ‘cause there’s no way I could extract that snake from under the dash and make it to work in the same day. Been three days now with the doors open, and it finally occurred to me that it’s a good thing that new stereo didn’t work out, ‘cause somebody would have stolen it by now…or got scared half to death tryin.’

Theater

Steel Magnolias

Steel Magnolias is a comedy– drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. It is written by Robert Harling, based on his experience with the death of his sister. The title suggests the “female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel”. The magnolia specifically references a magnolia tree they are arguing about at the beginning.

Show times and dates: Sept. 6th – Oct 5th Thursdays – Fridays 7:30 pm Saturdays 3:30 and 7:30 Tickets are $20 for adults $17 for seniors and students $15 for children under 12 and $15 for groups of 10 or more. Buy tickets online at www. Granburytheatrecompany.org or contact the box office at 817-579-0952 Season 2013 Photos by, Teri Ewing

THEATRE

The action centers on Truvy’s beauty parlour and the women who regularly gather there. The story begins on the morning of Shelby’s wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years, including Shelby’s decision to have a child despite having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision. There is also a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee and Ouiser; Annelle’s transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and

Truvy’s relationships with the men in her family. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother M’Lynn, and Shelby’s medical battles, the underlying group-friendship among all six women is prominent throughout the drama. Sure to make you laugh and cry. This beloved piece of theater is a popular favorite. Reserve tickets now! This one is sure to sell quick!

Music/Nightlife Meet the band! Matt Jones – Loves to eat. Favorite color is sky blue. He would really like to visit New Zealand one day. And he plays acoustic guitar and is the lead singer for the band. Sam Mason – Texas native, bassist, guitarist, singer-songwriter. Loves: good beer, good conversation, the cinema and sweet harmonies.

S

ongbird Jones is on a journey, in the midst of an experiment and an adventure. After releasing an EP titled “My Lonely Guitar” in 2012 they are following it up August 29th at The Live Oak Music Hall releasing a full length album titled “Songbird Jones”. And on top of that Matt Jones (lead singer of Songbird Jones) and Sam Mason (bass player for Songbird Jones) are going to release a Christmas album this year as a side project. They are expectant that these new releases will turn some heads!

Justin “Jgra” Gresham – Proud Aggie and soon to be papa. Loves mountain biking and Robert Earl Keen. From Keller, Texas. Lead guitarist and mulit-instrumentalist. Adam – Native, proud, born and raised Texan. Loves the water, fishing, surfing, boating, etc. Paramedic by day and an amazing drummer with good looks by night. Bottom line is these guys are good and getting better and better at a steady rate. They want to take the gifts that they have been given, use them well and have fun while doing so.

Keep an eye out for Songbird Jones. They could be leaving the nest soon and flying into some big things! Please check out Songbird Jones at: www.songbirdjones.com
