Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
All You Need is Love... And a Big Heart! “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own,” I recently read somewhere. I would have to agree, that the only thing better than being loved is loving…and, getting something shaped like a big heart. When I was little, I used to associate my February birthday with the arrival of big red hearts. They were everywhere in the department stores and shops. My mother would even have my cakes made in the shape of a heart, or with a Barbie doll stuck in the middle of a big cake that made up her flowing evening gown, festooned with hearts, of course. As I got older
the tradition didn’t change much, the Barbie doll was replaced with big red roses or something befitting my advancing age, but the cake remained heart shaped. My birthday month was alive with hearts; big red cardboard ones, gooey, yummy cake ones, helium balloon ones, boxes of chocolate candy ones, stuffed animals holding hearts… All this is to explain that I am a big fan of hearts…you name it…if it’s a heart, I like it. I’m

also a huge fan of people with big hearts, and not necessarily the chocolate kind. You meet them every day; the checker in the grocery store that smiles and sympathizes when you’ve misplaced your credit card and have to dump out the contents of your purse while an ever lengthening line of disgruntled customers forms behind you, or the woman who answers the telephone at your mobile phone provider who tells you she remembers raising five children and would be happy to defer your payment to a later date, and certainly, the gentleman that holds the door open, smiles at you AND lets you go in ahead of him at the DMV. I’m sure everyone has met their share of big hearted people and been uplifted by the experience; and, this seems
Amy Smith 682-229-8884 amy@myhometownstexas.com Esther Schreiber 817-487-8527 esther@myhometownstexas.com
to be especially true of the folks living and working in Parker County. From the banker and the business people to the Walmart greeters, big hearts abound in our hometown; lives are touched and made better on a daily basis. So this February 14th I’m not only celebrating Valentine’s Day (and my birthday), I’m also celebrating the big hearted people I’ve had the honor to come in contact with throughout the years I’ve been fortunate enough to live and work in Parker County. Happy Valentine’s Day to all! Some of you deserve a heart-shaped surprise this year…you know who you are!

ello fellow film and entertainment lovers, both novice and professional, young and old alike! Welcome to a fun place, here in this great publication, where we can journey together in all things Hollywood. I am so excited and grateful to be able to share with you my passion for film, television, and the arts. Please join me here every month for the latest and greatest escapes that tinsel town has to offer us, as I delve into the world of film and entertainment. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy Ray Sorrells. I have spent fourteen years toiling away in the film industry (19982012) working in production and post-production, on-location and in-house (studio) projects. I worked directly on large budget, big studio films all over the U.S. and Canada. I held numerous positions in various films from the lowly file clerk to the department head and everything in between. My knowledge in film production is vast and varied, and my interest is ever-growing. Though I am no longer professionally employed in the film industry, my contacts (and big nose) keep me planted firmly in all that is Hollywood! I certainly have an inside track to many celebrities, insights from behind the scenes (current and past films), and naturally an overwhelming abundance of personal stories just waiting to be told. Originally from Dublin, TX and having attended Weatherford College in my younger days, I feel truly back at home in this area. As much as I loved and will always miss my life on the road as a gypsy in film-making, I am even happier with my decision to be back in Texas and close to family and friends. Growing up one might guess I had an inclination to show business and movies, right? Well,
not really. No more than the average kid who would daydream of being the real Karate Kid or possibly being Elliot and best friends with E.T..At most, I would have wanted to have the ability of the young Drew Barrymore in “Firestarter” to keep pesky older brothers at bay…but beyond that, I had no interest or desire to learn filmmaking or what it was like for those that do. My professional introduction into movies is quite a story itself. In 1997, I moved from Weatherford to San Angelo to attend Angelo State University. I took a semester off to work and save money before hitting the books again. (Atypical 20’s move, right?) I quickly landed a full-time job at a Holiday Inn working as both a night bell-boy and at the front desk. One late evening, I checked in a group of people who were scouting the area for film locations on a movie that was shooting in Dallas. Over the next two weeks, I got to know and hang out with several of the crew members while they socialized and I asked every question in the book about their jobs. My gift of gab back then was welldocumented I can tell you. Upon their departure, I was assured we would keep in touch and was told if an entry-level position ever opened up, I would get a call. Oh sure, I thought. A million dollars will also fall from the sky and hit me in the head. Then low and behold – the call! After some excited school girl screams and more than a few high-five’s all the way around, I boarded a plane for Los Angeles for the quickest training period in an unknown industry known to man. A month later I was in Vancouver, British Columbia working on my first film. From there, it was city after city, film to film. My introduction to the movies wasn’t a particular typical one either. I didn’t go to film school. I wasn’t a struggling artist that had moved to Los Angeles and had paid my dues waiting tables, nor did I even have the distinct desire to get into film. I was just a curious young guy interested in some people doing something
www.myhometownstexas.com
so fascinating to me, that I just kept talking. I quickly learned that my fate was unlike those around me. Those other young men and women had been in the trenches for years already trying to earn the prized spot on working on a large studio film shooting on-location. Those who had applied for special programs to work with professional crew members, and those who interned for free a thousand miles from home for six months just for the experience and the resume qualifications. Here I was, new and inexperienced, getting paid to do a job that others my age would kill for. At first I just felt lucky, but soon lucky turned into un-deserving and quite frankly, unqualified. I was never told that or made to feel that way by anyone. That is something I put upon myself, not having the vast experience or the same conviction about film work that my colleagues had. I made up my mind that I would earn my keep and that no job would be too menial. I would volunteer for even the most mundane and unpopular tasks, speaking to everyone, and being the first one in and the last one to leave. Every day. From that first day of working, I loved it all, the entire business. I learned that behind the scenes is where it’s all at from the deal making, to on-set antics. I wouldn’t trade a minute of it. So that is what I hope to offer here. An insightful and sometimes humorous look into the entertainment that we spend our leisure time viewing. I will be watching and giving reviews of films that are coming out and talking about ones that are currently still in production,
and even the occasional bigname interview. With so much material to view in this multimedia age; films, television, pod-casts, film festivals, online viewing options, plays, award shows, national and local film events…well, one can get dizzyheaded keeping up. I hope to showcase a sprinkling from all of these entertainment platforms in this column, along with some fun facts you might not know. Also included will be stories and films connected to certain times of the year. Holiday vintage movies, for instance, provide the nostalgia needed to bring one around into the spiritof the season. Local filmmakers are also a great source of inspiration and can provide us with stories and tales that may hit a little closer to home. Live music performers and various venues in and around our area will surely grace the column, as well as a good pinch of Hollywood gossip and latest news. My sources and friends are long and seasoned in the industry, blessing me with many strings to pull! I hope you’ll join me here every month and follow along as I do what I love to do best … film jive! Most of all, I hope that you enjoy the column as much as I already do and we can discover together why there really is no business like showbusiness! By: Jimmy Ray Sorrells

by the abstract photo artistry that Richard specializes in, paired with Chad’s expertise in high tech computerization and printing. Capturing Moments in Time Through Light Photo artist Richard Bettinger uses light as his medium. Although most photographers use light to create a mood or to highlight a subject, Bettinger uses it to take the most ordinary objects and transform them into beautiful, abstract pieces of art. His work has been called “Vibrant, Alluring and Sexy” by many, and has graced the pages of magazines across the nation including; Architectural Digest, Dallas Modern Luxury, California Home and Design, Interior Design, Luxe and Patron. Richard’s innovative, ethereal visions of the modern world can be seen in his original and limited edition fine art photography, as well as an astounding collection of wall coverings and furnishings based on his photographic designs. The artist’s career in photography really began with the technological advances of digital photography.Bettinger’s subtle variations of shutter speeds, lens manipulations and camera movements, allow him to transform the subject creating a painterly
effect and an otherworldly quality that is far removed from the original. Richard’s groundbreaking technique, which he has given the name, Decompressionism, creates unique and startlingly beautiful images; filled with electrifying natural color and energy. “This new medium satisfies my desire to capture the reflection of life instead of its reality,” says Richard. “You see it in the light against darkness, fire against water and in finding beauty in the contrasts that the visual world presents. Nothing is what it seems.”

Puppy reached out to their fans via Facebook where they posted: “The way that we all feel right now is inexpressible. I can’t emphasize enough that we were only able to win this as a result of you all listening, supporting and sharing our music with your friends … the underdogs somehow pulled it out after 10 years of grinding it out on the road, and it’s because of you.” Snarky Puppy will release their eighth album/live DVD We Like It Here on Feb. 25 and plans to spread their music even more on a world tour this February through July.

He is genuine, moral and humble to the gifts that the Lord has blessed him with. Michael will be returning to the Texas Opry Theater stage often this next year on several upcoming shows as an opening act such as March 8th with The World Famous Platters, and on June 14th with Whisperin’ Bill Anderson and Nadine the Church Lady from Larry’s Country Diner on RFDTV, and as the headliner with his own band.

kicked the New Year off with a sold out show on January 1 featuring the return of Donny Edwards, one of the top three Elvis Tribute Artists in the entire country. This was Donny’s fifth sold out show at the Texas Opry Theater since 2011 and he will return again next New Year’s Day 2015, for yet another show that will without a doubt sell out again. They followed up 10 days later on January 11 with a big Reunion Show of the original Granbury Live Cast and band from the years of 1999 to 2005. Singer, entertainer extraordinaire Carey Dyer made his second appearance at the Texas Opry Theater along with Linda Morgan, Cass Moore, Erika Stevens, Alecia Echols and the Granbury Live Band that is now known as The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band. The Band consists of original members Roger Ramsey on bass, Josh Rodgers on drums, Mike Echols on fiddle and the somewhat newer member Christian Hutton on lead guitar (although Christian was with the band at the Granbury Live Theater until it closed from 2007 till 2011). This show was called A Blast From The Past Reunion Show and sold out nearly every seat in the house.
Then on January 25th the doors opened yet again to another nearly sold out performance with Michael Hix and The Holla Band and Dizzy With A Dame. Michael Hix has made several appearances at the Texas Opry Theater since it re-opened in March of 2010 both with his Holla Band and as a solo performer with The Amazing Made In Texas Show Time Band. Michael spent 10 years with Johnny High in Arlington until Johnny’s death in 2010. He stayed on until last year when the new owner wanted to take the Arlington Music Hall a different direction and Michael was ready to strike out on his own with the entertainment skills he learned while performing at the Music Hall. Michael has a tremendous gift. He brings crowds to their feet and always leaves the

Marilyn and Jerry Carter, the owners and operators of the Texas Opry Theater are thrilled to have this band call the theater their new home since the Granbury Live Theater closed its doors and sold to a new owner. “We are looking forward to a fun and productive year in 2014 with a variety of shows on the average of every 2-3 weeks or more,” said Marilyn Carter. “We will always offer programs that are family friendly, Christian based and highly entertaining. Our theater has always been non-smoking, alcohol free, cool, clean, and comfortable.” We offer concessions with all beef hot dogs, fresh popped popcorn, cold sodas and bottled water, coffee and candy. We are in the process of adding some new equipment to help speed up the line that will get everybody waited on in a shorter time period and be able to accept credit and debit cards at the checkout.

aty Keenie’s journey in the music world began at five years of age when her dad heard George Strait’s classic country song, “The Chair”, and promptly decided to move his family from Ontario, Canada to Texas. From the moment they planted their roots in Texas Katie felt right at home. Although she has always loved horses and participated in cutting horse competitions for years, her music career is currently taking priority in her life. Her many trips to Nashville along with playing at local venues, not to mention spending a large amount of her time writing her own songs, is a time consuming passion. “I’m a singer/ songwriter and I love it!” says Katy. The talented artist is no stranger to hard work and says the best piece of advice she has ever had comes from fellow artist Johnny Lee who passed along the wisdom of the
great Loretta Lynn, “write, write, write!”; and Katy is doing just that. She is currently in a twelve song production deal with JH Entertainment out of Nashville with her career being endorsed by Rios of Mercedes Boot Company and Icehole Coolers. Katy had the honor of winning Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40 Future Star Competition and counts the radio legend as one of her biggest fans and most loyal supporters. She has also

Terry and Caris Turpen are fearless when it comes to breaking the rules and trying new things, which is why their boutique Texas winery and bistro has become a favorite of folks from around the state. Award winning wines, sublime bistro dishes, lovely scenery and live jazz Sundays have turned out to be a magic recipe for success. Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, Caris has lived in Fort Worth since 1990, but her father was a 4th generation Texan. Her winemaking roots came from her maternal grandmother who was the family winemaker in Greece and then in New York; a fact that was unknown by Caris until she had already been making her own wines for five or six years. She took up winemaking as a hobby when she was in the middle of her twenty-five year long career in the film industry, and a passion developed as well as an extraordinary talent. So she went back to school and

explaining all about the winemaking process to his customers. The Turpen’s small estate vineyard of fifty Lenoir (also known as Black Spanish) vines is used for grape growing and pruning demonstrations and produces about one barrel each year. For their other featured wines they use Texas grapes, mostly from the High Plains AVA to craft wines that showcase the best each vineyard has to offer. From those, they release a total of 1500 cases of nine to twelve different wines each year. They also offer wine tastings with the goal of helping people discover their wine preferences. “Don’t worry about not being a connoisseur” says Terry, “Nobody is born knowing about wines…it takes trying them to figure out what you like and perhaps even why you like it – we’re here to help.” Among their numerous awards and accolades are: Fort Worth Weekly’s Best Alfresco Dining and Best Kept Secret awards as well as rave reviews from Fort Worth Texas Magazine and Fort Worth FOODIE Magazine that have literally arrived non-stop from the day the Turpens opened the doors of this unique winery and bistro. Caris, who is also an accomplished chef, pairs her lovely dishes, made with the best fresh, local produce available,
of goodies for wine drinkers and foodies. Attached to the building is a beautiful, breezy, elevated patio that is alive with jazz music on the first and third Sundays of most months.
February is special at Lightcatcher, as every year they create an amazing experience of food, wine, music, candlelight and beauty in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Friday, February 14th from 6 to 10 p.m., a sumptuous four course meal with wine pairing is available, along with live music for dining and dancing by the Peggy Lohr trio, featuring love ballads, bossa nova, swing and more. Seating is limited for this very special evening so make your reservations early! Together, Terry and Caris Turpen have achieved their goal of pairing superb wines and foods, and providing a cool place to enjoy them. As Terry says, “ I want every guest or customer to leave with a smile on their face.”
