Welcome to My Hometowns Texas
Cultural & Entertainment Magazine of Hood and Somervell Counties!
F
all is just a wonderful time of year to have fun. It is always a welcome relief to the hot days of summer. Kids are back in school and there are football games—high school, college, and professional. There are the colors of fall to see — leaves changing on the trees, bright orange pumpkins, bales of hay and homemade scarecrows on the lawns. Starbuck’s has their pumpkin spice latte back on the menu. It is time for comfort food: baked casseroles, mac and cheese, soups and stews, applesauce cakes, carrot cakes, and Halloween cupcakes made to look like spiders. Cheerful Heart Gifts in Granbury is having a Gourmet Food Sampling Festival, Saturday, October 5 from 12-4 pm. There will be a chef demo, over 20 booths, music & fun. You can contact 817-579-9599 for a FREE ticket.
T
he Fall Festivals are always lots of fun with crafts, pumpkin painting, candy apples, making scarecrows, and holiday gifts and items to buy. On October 5, there is the 5th annual Preserve Granbury’s Party on the Peak event atop Comanche Peak from 5-11 pm . You can feast upon an authentic cowboy chuck-wagon dinner with Chef Homer Robertson, dance under the Texas stars to music by Davin James, bid on silent and live auctions, and just enjoy the panoramic view from “The Peak”. While enjoying all of this fun, you will be helping preserve historic places in Hood County. Granbury’s Harvest Moon Festival is on the historic Granbury Square, Saturday 9 am-6 pm and Sunday 10 am-5 pm, October 19-20. There will be arts and crafts, food vendors, and entertainment.

in the regalia of a Ponca tribe dancer, visited the gallery and posed for the artists. Some of the art was sold at the end of that event. Impromptu instruction is offered in sculpting, ceramics, and painting. This art gallery is a must see for everyone. It is amazing to see John Wayne larger than life, in the sculpture wax made by Robert Summers. The actual casting is displayed at the Orange County Airport, CA.
T
he White Buffalo Gallery is located in historic downtown Glen Rose. This fine art gallery is honored to represent Robert Summers, the nationally acclaimed sculptor and painter who resides in Glen Rose. The gallery features western art and sculpture from artists Don Weller, Carolyne Hawley, Dina Gregory, Margaret Drake, Sherry Harrington, Jeff Gottfried, Kathy Tate, Teal Blake, Robert Fobear, Mike Irvin, Cat Corcilius, Nancy Grobe, Douglas B. Clark and Flavia Eckholm. Jean Lane, the owner, is a Glen Rose native. She moved into her new gallery about two and one-half years ago. The historic building in downtown Glen Rose with ambient light and re-purposed high ceilings is a beautiful place to showcase all works of art, including
handmade jewelry. While I was in the gallery, a customer that has been in most of the galleries in Austin rated The White Buffalo Gallery as the best gallery between Austin and Glen Rose. She not only bought a handmade turquoise necklace, but she came back later and bought some more unique items from the Gallery.
The White Buffalo Gallery is located at 200 NE Barnard St., Glen Rose, TX, and can be contacted at 254-897-1988. Gallery Hours: Friday & Saturday 11 am – 5 pm; Sunday 1 pm – 5 pm. For private viewings, call 214-914-5372. TheWhiteBuffaloGallery.com
Jean features all kinds of art such as: pottery, sculptures, wooden crosses, wall hangings, and handmade jewelry. Most all items are suggestive of western themes and western accessories. Branded YO In the Hill Country of Texas, on a part locals call the Divide Capt. Charles Schreiner built a ranch and branded the Longhorns hide
A great ranch was created And the legend began to grow For over a hundred years the Longhorn cattle have been branded YO
He bought a herd in Gonzales County and slowly trailed’em West established the ranch on rugged land and now he faced the test
Through the good years and the lean times the YO still survives With a mix of hard work, sweat, blood, determination and a continuin’ pioneer drive
The test between man and nature a test all ranchers know Droughts and floods, snow and ice and times when inflation was the only thing that would grow
If you’re ever at the ranch when the West suns settin’ low you can almost hear the ol’ ranch sounds from a hundred years ago
He drove Longhorn cattle up the trail to railheads goin’ East providin’ work for lots a Cowboys and meat for city peoples feast A lotta good cowboys worked for Capt. Schreiner they were the ranches strong right hand they never shirked the hard work days and knew what it meant to ride for the Brand
The sounds of ‘hosses’ and cowboys come to life and you hear the Longhorns bawl all around, the sounds of history and from horse back Capt. Schreiner oversees it all Well they no longer drive’em up the trail like they did so long ago But they still raise and work Longhorn cattle and they’re still branded YO

Country Living
True enough, I started hangin’ laundry on the clothesline because my dryer blew out, but it has turned into one of my favorite rituals of country living. Nothing gets a cotton shirt feeling like it should like a good, old-fashioned airing out in the sunshine. It’s actually hard science that those UV rays do magical things for socks and underwear, though I’m not sure the neighbor lady will ever be the same since she came over for some eggs and saw my “Superman” boxers flying proudly in the breeze. While it’s good for the clothes, I like what hangin’ laundry does for my spirit. Physically, I may be pinning jeans to a plastic-coated wire, but mentally, I’m soaring through time and memories… beautiful memories. Like the first time I saw bluebirds swooping across the meadow. Like the time one of my chickens was walking across the yard and paused for about ten seconds, dropped an egg right there on the ground, then kept on walking. (Jenny always was one for surprises.)
and was carrying about fifteen of those beauties in my shirt tail pouch when I heard all this commotion in the meadow. I followed the barking until I saw my little dog, Belle, squared off with a skunk. Well, I started calling her, but she was too transfixed upon that polecat to pay any attention to me. I quickly realized that all the hollering in the world wasn’t going to help, so I had to think fast, because I sure wasn’t going over there and get in the middle of that mayhem. I started to look around for some way to distract the dog, when I realized the answer was right in my hands. I had about fifteen chances to get that crazy canine’s attention. I started launching eggs. The first three fastball pitches went whizzing by unnoticed, and I began to panic. Bad time to have a small dog. I tried a slower speed with the next three…didn’t hit Belle, but got the skunk’s attention, which I didn’t figure was a good thing, since it meant the skunk was smarter than my dog. I tried sidearm, which got close. I tried a high lob once…no good. Only a few eggs left…it was time to man up. I could almost feel Kate Smith singing and Old
So I’m out there in my bedroom slippers and Superman boxers, hanging my shirts on the line, when my mind gets to wandering back to the time a few years ago I had just collected eggs from the nest boxes,
Glory rising as I squared off for the next pitch. I opted for the split-fingered fastball right down the middle. Pow! Popped that pup right in the buttock and she came out of the “hunter’s

trance” that had kept her paralyzed for so long. She came running to me and I picked her up with one hand. Looking back at the skunk, we saw it eating one of those eggs. Good trade, I thought, a dozen eggs for a non-stinky dog. (It was about another month before Belle would come flying into the house, barrelrolling down the hallway, wiping off polecat juice on the walls, floor, furniture… everything. It was then that I learned that the old tomato juice remedy is completely worthless. Best go with a quart of hydrogen peroxide, a pint of water, and a box of baking soda.) What a great memory. I put my load of clean shirts over my shoulder and headed for the house, stirring up a few grasshoppers as I walked. All was beautiful until one of those grasshoppers
launched straight up… straight up the leg of my Superman boxers. Well, that was enough to turn this Man of Steel into the Man of Squeal! I scream and flail like an idiot until I finally dislodge this prickly-legged Krytonite kritter from my nether regions….when out of the corner of my eye, I see my neighbor lady standing there, wide-eyed and flash-frozen, empty egg carton in hand.

huck and Ruby Rickgauer’s Bed and Breakfast, The Windmill Farm, is located at 6625 Colony Road in Tolar, Texas. Their farm is a beautiful piece of property with silhouettes of antique windmills across the landscape. I did not realize that there were so many different windmills made by many different companies. When you visit the farm, be sure to ask Chuck to give you a private tour. Or, you can go on a self-guided tour of the 40 plus windmills on 26 acres. The farm is open daily for people to tour, so you can go during the week or on the weekend. They also provide windmill repair and restorative services. The Windmill Farm has three private cabins on the property: The Dakota Cabin, The Star Cabin and The Windjammer. A homemade breakfast is served at the cabins. Children and pets are welcome. The Dakota Cabin is named after Ruby’s homestead located in South Dakota where the 1st windmill came from. It features a rustic setting, decorated in old west style, with beautiful wood walls, vaulted ceilings, and a queen size bed in a separate bedroom with full bath.
The Star Cabin is named after the Texas Star and is decorated in patriotic colors and tailored furnishings, with a vaulted ceiling. It has a separate bedroom with a queen size bed and full bath. The Dakota and Star both have a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot. The Windjammer has three queen size beds with a full kitchen. It is an 800 square foot cabin and can accommodate small events. There is a large living and playing area, two queen size Murphy beds, and a queen bed in a separate bedroom. It can be rented at a day rate for events.

tumpy’s Lakeside Grill is located at Lake Granbury Marina on Highway 144 about 2 miles south of Highway 377 in Granbury. It is family owned and operated and has been since they opened in November 2008. The restaurant got its name from all the tree stumps that are in the lake.
charities include: Mission Granbury, Kids Armor of Hope, Ruth’s Place, and Project 44, to list just a few. Other specials include “Kids Eat Free” Thursdays and “Shrimp Boil” Saturdays. The restaurant is also connected to Lake Granbury Marina where you can find all kinds of shopping available. Some items include women’s and men’s clothing
and swim wear, jewelry, and of course, shoes--Sanuk, Reef, Yellow Box and many others. The marina sells Sea-doo jet skis, and repairs all brands of jet skis. They also sell and rent Kayaks and Stand Up Paddle boards for something fun to do on the weekends (even while the lake is low). Like Stumpy’s on Facebook, and find out about all their specials and events going on. Here is what people have to say about Stumpy’s:
DINING
Stumpy’s is on the water (boat accessible when there is water) with patio or indoor dining. Kids enjoy the patio where they can feed ducks and fish with fish food that comes with the kids’ meals (or more commonly their left over kids meals—it’s more fun for them to feed the ducks than to eat the food themselves). The most popular food items are fish tacos, fresh catfish, and burgers. Other items include PoBoys, chicken sandwiches, and fried shrimp. There is a full bar, including Revolver on draft, and a variety of other beers and mixed beverages. Their margaritas are some of the best in the area. There are several TV’s to watch sporting events. Right now Stumpy’s is open on Sunday afternoons during the Cowboys games.
The most popular specials are “Taco Tuesday” where anyone can mix and match tacos for just $2 a piece and “Rib Night” on Fridays, when baby back ribs are freshly smoked, as well as chicken, and both are amazingly delicious. Also, “Chow Down for Charity” is very popular. Every Wednesday, 10%% of food sales go to a different local charity of the week. Some of the
