Welcome to My Hometowns Texas
Cultural & Entertainment Magazine of Hood and Somervell Counties!
A
t the start of this holiday season, as families across Texas come together, I think of what makes Texas and our country so great, and in the spirit of the season, I share with you some reflections on this important time of year. Most significantly this season, we need to take time to pause and give thanks to the men and women who bravely volunteer to serve our country in the armed forces. Their personal sacrifice is one that we can never fully repay. We thank all the men and women throughout the history of this country who have given so much of their time, effort, and lives in the military defense and service of this country. Our freedom comes from these men and women who so graciously served, and answered the call of our country. God Bless Our Troops. Thanksgiving, as we all know, began in Plymouth Colony with the Pilgrims, who had traveled from Europe and settled in what is now Massachusetts. The Pilgrims took great risk in traveling to America and today, many Americans are taking similar modern day risks, every day. The decision to start or expand a business or to change careers in pursuit of something better are but a few examples of how we continue to take risks in search of something better for ourselves, our families and our communities. Thanksgiving is a time for us to consider how fortunate we all are to live in a country that allows for each and every person to determine their own future. We should all give thanks to be so richly blessed. As we enter into the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, there

will be many fun events to enjoy. The Cynthia Ann and Quanah Parker exhibit at the Langdon Center is not to be missed. This pictorial exhibit is pure Texas history and runs through December 18. Please see the article in this issue. On November 9, the Veterans’ Day Parade flows through town starting at 10 am. Also on the 9th, the 29th Annual Jewel Ball—A Winter Wonderland is at Granbury Resort Conference Center. What better way to start the holiday season than to dress up and attend a live and silent auction, dancing, raffle and millennium casino as well as enjoy a prime rib dinner! The Somervell County Expo Center hosts a fiddle contest which is free on November 9-10. That ought to be a foot stompin’ good time! Dinosaur World lets one grandparent in free with a fully paid child admission on the first three Sundays of the month, and Veterans are free all day on November 11. There are several “markets” where you can get ahead on your shopping needs with great gifts, which should be easier than dealing with the crowds later. Do you enjoy rolling hills, big skies, picturesque towns and wine? If so, then the WOW (Way Out Wineries) holiday road trip is a must. Eleven North Texas wineries host this special event with holiday food and wine pairings, and you will receive a special holiday

ornament from each winery. On the 17th, Branson is coming to town with “Branson on the Road” at the Granbury Resort Conference Center. This is sure to please the entire family with great music. Did you know that the Glen Rose square has a Montana Silversmith outlet store? Well you do now, and that square is having a Black Friday on November 29. There will be special deals including ladies night out. For further info on any of these events, just look in the center of the magazine at the calendar.

Comanche Nation: The Story of Quanah and Cynthia Ann Parker
C
ynthia Ann and Quanah Parker are two important names in U.S. frontier history. Much can be learned from the dramatic story of these two courageous individuals. In 1836, a Comanche raiding party took Cynthia Ann from her family and over the following years, she became wife to Peta Nocona, a Comanche chief and mother to three children, including Quanah. After Cynthia Ann was taken back by Texas Rangers, Quanah became one of the most important Comanche leaders both in war and peace. Quanah, was the last Comanche Chief, but when he realized that to continue on fighting the white man meant certain starvation and death for all his people, he became a bridge to the new world and helped his people adjust to a new way of life.
The subtitle of the exhibit is “A Woman OF Two Worlds and a Man IN Two Worlds. This exhibit seeks to educate the public about Comanche heritage through presenting the dramatic story of Quanah Parker and his mother
Cynthia Ann through a series of over forty photos seldom brought together in a single place. It also seeks to make people aware of the many historic sites associated with the lives of these two persons. The photo exhibit is designed to tell the story of the lives of Cynthia Ann and Quanah caught between two different worlds. This exhibit is viewed as the first step toward creating a traveling education exhibit and a heritage tourism program which uses the lives of Cynthia Ann Parker and her son, Quanah, to explain the complex story of a frontier era which involved great tragedies and deep human love, as well as dramatic changes affecting large areas of both Texas and Oklahoma.
Quanah, has provided special inspiration for the project. This exhibit is the beginning of an effort to bring more attention to the important Native American heritage in our region. The Cynthia Ann and Quanah Parker Exhibit, is a heritage tourism effort of the Texas Lakes Trail Regional Heritage Tourism Program. Preserve Granbury is partnering with them, the City of Granbury and its Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center, and
Tarleton State University to bring this special exhibit to Granbury. The photo exhibit will be open through December 18, Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gordon House, Langdon Center, located just off the square in Granbury. Admission is free.
Special recognition must be given to the Comanche Nation and the many members of the Parker family for keeping this story alive and sharing materials and information. Ben Tahmahkera, great, great grandson of

This ‘Ol Hat Now this ‘ol hat was made for me by Manny Many a round up ago I guess if you counted them up It’d be thirt four year or so When it was new It was a pretty sight Now it’s old and worn like me But it fits my head jist right. Through pouring rain and bitter cold It’s kept my head real warm But jist like an old ranch house It still retains its charm Some folks may say “Have a new one made” I reply you can’t Take an ‘ol friend in to trade I’ll wear this ‘ol hat So it isn’t real clean But those of you that have had a hat That long know exactly what I mean. “Ain’t it the truth” 10 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Theater
Granbury Opera House By Joe Adams
Recently, I had an enlightening tour of the nearly complete Granbury Opera House renovation with Andrew Barrus, Creative Director of the Granbury Theatre Company. While being issued our hard hats in the office construction trailer, I noticed blueprints of building plans. I quickly realized how much planning went into the improvement of the Opera House, originally finished in 1886. The plan was to keep the historic landmark, but add to it to make a larger state of the art theater that would meet Americans with Disabilities requirements, yet keep the same intimate spirit. Many of the improvements are backstage, where rehearsal spaces, new dressing rooms, and places to build and store sets have been added to replace a Quonset hut that was torn down. After putting on the hard hats, we walked into the back of the theatre. There were workers busy all over the building cleaning rock walls, making floors, building stairs, and putting rock on the building. Completion of the Granbury Opera House is in its final stages, and the construction crew is dedicated to working seven days a week so the black-tie gala on December 5 and the opening of “A Christmas Carol” on December 6 will happen on schedule.
As we walked through the building, Andrew pointed out where the rehearsal room was located, and showed me the new dressing rooms, elevator and storage places that have all been very carefully planned and constructed. There will also be an orchestra pit, new lights and sound systems. The stage is fantastic! The House will have beautifully curved staircases in the front lobby, as well as three stories up and a basement down. This basement has many advantages being located under the stage. Granbury Opera House is going to be a beautiful theatre that is both functional and maintains the opera house’s intimate feel — its capacity grew by only one seat, to 309 — where everyone is close to the stage.
costumes, music and dance. It will teach our children the art. Most of all, theater is fun to do and fun to see. What will the theater do for us as a community? “We think the Opera House will dramatically help our tourism,” Granbury City Manager Wayne McKethan said. “We see it as a complement to the lake that will bring more people to Granbury.” Once it reopens,
What will the theatre do for us as an audience? It will make us laugh and cry. It will stir our emotions. It may take us to a fairytale land or to another part of the world or time. It is about

This can all be summed up with the Granbury Theatre Company Mission Statement: “Our mission is to enrich the community with high quality entertainment that warms the heart, uplifts the spirit, and tells worthy stories. We plan to provide volunteer opportunities for those in the community and offer educational experiences for children, teens and adults to develop artistic talents and learn the theater craft. “

The Premiere Gala will start with a red carpet entrance at 6:00 pm, with informal viewing of the theatre and stage. Formal presentations begin at 7:00 pm. To warm guests up for the season, excerpts from the Theatre Company’s production of “A Christmas Carol” will be presented at 7:15 pm. To conclude the evening, guests will be entertained in VIP style in an outdoor tent, featuring dancing, music, drink, and light appetizers.

supporters say, the theater will be used for a multitude of purposes. There will be a children’s theater company, and they hope to have a lecture series. Ballet and symphony performances and the occasional live concert haven’t been ruled out. The full potential of The Opera House is not yet known.
THE BIG EVENT on December 5th, 2013, the Granbury Opera House will be celebrated with one of the city’s largest Premiere Gala extravaganzas. Dignitaries from around the state will be in attendance. This red carpet and black tie event will include valet parking, hors d’oeurves, champagne, live entertainment – including a world class string quartet, as well as excerpts from Granbury Theatre Company’s production of “A Christmas Carol”. Tickets are $100 for the evening Gala, and may be purchased at www. granburytheatercompany.org or by calling 817-579-0952.

MUSIC MUSIC
classical/flamenco guitarist and composer in the Parker County area, Kevin has performed extensively as a soloist and with his Latin-Jazz group, The Kevin Townson Band, for a variety of events throughout the DFW Metroplex for over two decades. He has released two CD’s to date featuring his unique blend of flamenco, jazz and pop sounds. Pictures from Spain (2003) and Between The Lines (2005).
In addition to his classical training, he is quite passionate about other genres of music such as Spanish flamenco music and jazz. Kevin says, “these genres of music show the full range of what the guitar is capable of achieving.” He goes on to say “Discovering music of other cultures and how that music connects with ours is something that’s very interesting and intriguing to me.” Kevin says he also likes to work on a popular tune every now and then; they’re fun to play and it keeps him in touch with what’s contemporary in our own culture. A native Texan, Kevin attended the University of North Texas in Denton where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Classical guitar performance. Kevin says “going to UNT was such a wonderful experience. Just hanging out with musicians of that caliber and from all over the world was amazing.”
Kevin has been teaching guitar since the mid 1980’s and is presently Director of The Childbloom Guitar Program in Parker County, which introduces music through the guitar to young people 5-12 years of age. He has been teaching this method since 1995, including the past 12 years here in Parker County. Kevin says “I really love teaching this method. It’s so wonderful to see the kid’s eyes just light up when they learn something they thought was not attainable. It’s such a fun way to communicate with young people and hopefully inspire them to greater goals.” Kevin is also an adjunct faculty member at Tarleton State where he teaches Classical and Jazz guitar.
In 2003, Kevin had a set back and was diagnosed with hereditary colon cancer which sidelined him for a few years but this year has been diagnosed as cancer free. He states, “It was such a rough portion of my life struggling everyday with this disease, to overcome it and be released from the doctor this year was a massive weight lifted off of my shoulders.” Since marrying his wife Kimla in 2008 he has taken on a new, deeper responsibility. Kimla was a sponsor for a family of refugees from Africa, the Hassani family. Kevin tells me, “they have been a joy to mentor and nurture as
Kevin says he hopes to continue teaching, guiding, and inspiring young guitarists to reach their full potential both as musicians and individuals. Inspiration for playing the guitar came as a teenager, when he saw a TV program featuring the great classical guitarist Andrea Segovia playing a concert at the White House in the late 1970’s. He says “I was just blown away at the fact that this guy must be 80 years old and he’s playing guitar to people that are absolutely spell bound.” Kevin goes on to say “I wanted to be like that when I got old, which happens to everybody eventually.”
