Welcome to My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Spring Has Sprung Well, Almost... Each morning, for the past several weeks, I’ve been waking up at 5:45 a.m….not because I need to, but because an almost forgotten sound, once again, pierces the quiet of early morning - the chirping of a mockingbird. This particular mockingbird makes its nest in a tree, just outside my bedroom window, every year (or maybe it’s the offspring of the first bird to nest there). Anyway, by 5:45 the bird has gathered a head of steam for what is the longest litany of bird songs I have ever heard; just when you think it’s over, another chorus begins! Try as I might, I can never sleep through it and I end up getting out of bed, stumbling around in the near dark and making my way to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. Over the years I have considered numerous evil plans to

eliminate the noisy bird… none of which I’ve put into motion. Eventually mother and babies abandon the nest and fly away, leaving me with song free mornings. But, this year, I am welcoming the mockingbird and her young. After the most bitterly cold winter I’ve experienced during my lifetime in Texas, the sound of her first song was music to my ears! I may even build her a little birdhouse this year. I know you all feel just as I do about the approaching spring season…it’s about

time! The harbingers of spring are everywhere; daffodils are springing up from the earth, the days are getting longer, birds are building their nests in anticipation of the season of renewal. Here in Parker County, folks are gearing up for a busy spring too. Celebrations of the season are taking place all over the County, kicking off with a free concert by local Texas Artists, held at Weatherford’s Heritage Park on the First Monday grounds on March 1st, followed by the City of Aledo 4H Club who brings the famous Kelly Miller Circus to town on March 15th; the fun continues through the month of March with Clark Gardens Botanical Park’s Spring Festival on March 29th and 30th. These family friendly events are followed by another treat for adults

FAREWELL LENO, HELLO OSCAR

THE

CHIN WITH THE GRIN

It was as expected. A subdued, at times somber, but always pleasant Jay Leno giving us his last show. For twenty-two years we tuned in to NBC as the host of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” kept us entertained and laughing, watching him magically go from a young quick witted talent with dark hair to the grey-haired older statesman of late night. Never failing to capture number one in the ratings, Jay Leno has been a staple in American households. Getting the keys from “the greatest” Johnny Carson himself, Leno positioned himself into the top rated spot with interviews from the latest and hottest celebrities, politicians, astronauts, and musicians. (Not to mention those hilarious headlines) One can’t help but wonder as he now hands those Tonight Show keys over to Jimmy Fallon, exactly what is on the horizon for Jay Leno? A notorious workaholic and gifted stand-up comedian, with the ability to navigate studio executives, we have seen Jay Leno come back before. Is it the end of Jay Leno on American television or is there a final act yet to be seen? As we all ponder this option, I would like to take a few moments and remember my time spent in The Tonight Show audience back in 2002. During a work hiatus, and just living down the street from Burbank in North Hollywood, I decided one day to see how a person off the street – a

regular Joe- gets tickets to be in the audience of The Tonight Show. After a quick phone call, I found out that it was easy enough. Stand in line outside the doors. That I could do. I found myself the first in line the next morning, 8a.m. sharp in the warm and breezy NBC corridor. Turns out, the line doesn’t start to form until around noon. Live and learn. I was the first in and got front row smack in the middle of Jay Leno. I was so close I could have offended him with bad cologne. I can’t remember who the guests were that first night, or much else I’m afraid, but I had a blast and decided to do it all again the next day. Not wanting to lose my coveted number one spot, I again arrived at 8 a.m. I repeated this behaviour for two and a half weeks until my own job beckoned me back. I would show up every morning at 8 a.m. as if I worked there. I got to know the ushers on a first name basis and was even allowed to wait in the V.I.P. section the last few days I attended. (I do remember sitting next to Carnie Wilson as we watched Tina Turner perform) Jay was so giving of his time to the audience during warm-up. He would always answer questions and try to stump audience members with trivia. I was even brazen enough to ask for a photo with the host after he pointed to me and said “you sure hang out here a lot”, which drew a big laugh from the staff and band. It will be a long haul for another host to make it past the second decade mark in modern-era television, so let’s give accolades where they are due. Farewell Jay Leno… (At least for now)

OSCAR FEVER 2014 With the Academy Awards just a stone’s throw away, all of Hollywood is gearing up for the industry’s biggest night of the year. Millions of eyes will be glued to the small screen March 2 as the 86th Academy Awards kick off in The Dolby Theatre. As usual, we have the well-known and accomplished big name artists vying for the prestigious

awards, coupled with talented and deserving some surprise newcomers. Let’s get right to the dish, shall we? Best Motion Picture of the Year: With a whopping total of nine nominees for the biggest award, we are assured a night of watch-worthy television! From AMERICAN HUSTLE to 12 YEARS A SLAVE; the category is as diverse in the story lines and themes as they are in the artists who portray them. Also nominated in this category is CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, GRAVITY, HER, NEBRASKA, PHILOMENA, and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Having seen all of the films excluding HER, my pick for the top prize goes to DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. Fact is stranger than fiction, and this North Texas story just couldn’t be surpassed by the others in the same field.

However, I feel that the “powers that be” in the Academy might just bypass my decision and instead go for “AMERICAN HUSTLE”. Who you got? Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Again, four internationally known big named stars and one that’s unheard of. Christian Bale for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Bruce Dern for NEBRASKA, Leonardo DiCaprio for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, ChiwetelEjiofor for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, and finally Matthew McConaughey for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. My pick to grab Oscar in this category would surprisingly be Bruce Dern for NEBRASKA. Although I did choose DALLAS BUYERS CLUB for Best Picture, I thought Dern played a diligent and well thought-out character in this film. Perhaps because his face is that of continued on page 12

Enriching the Spirit with Canvas, Brush and Paint “Painting on location is a discovery,” remarked the talented, Dallas based artist, Olivette Hubler. She compares it to selecting a book by its cover and then experiencing a different world as the story develops the deeper you read into it. “In 2001, my husband and I bought a small trailer for travelling to places of interest. The idea was, that I would paint and he would

Sometimes painting a location a second or third time after a period of incubation results in the distillation of the memory and focused reality of that place,” observed the artist. Olivette’s approach as an artist is to combine the constantly changing moments into an enduring interpretation of nature. Olivette’s art also evolves from sketches, photos and life drawing sessions. “There is no subject more challenging than sketching or painting from life. The variations of the human body, its moods, movements and makeup are endless and

read,” says Olivette. Since then, they have done a lot of travelling, painting and reading, mostly within a 400 mile radius of Dallas; taking them to Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado as well as Texas. Olivette finds that certain locations follow her for years. “The intense scrutiny that comes with an extended time of observing a particular location is like taking a piece of it with you.

I never tire of drawing from life,” says the artist. She does hundreds of sketches a year and is fascinated by studying the figure drawings of other artists because it divulges so much about their methods and thought processes. Engraving is another favorite art form of the artist and she likens it to “drawing on steroids.” The physical act 6 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

of etching and digging into copper, though new to her, is fascinating. Engraving of any kind is a slow deliberate process allowing plenty of time for the mind to wander and come up with something unexpected. “If you want to learn about color, study pastels,” Olivette believes. Pastels are virtually pure pigment with little or no binder to hold them together so they stack up on the surface. There is no sheen to the matt ground of pigment resulting in explosive color. Olivette likes to push them into the surface forcing them to have a three dimensional quality. “Colorwise, they behave like stained glass,” the artist observes. The artist’s discovery of Bruce Klein’s blog detailing his quest for the ideal life drawing class, along with his great book suggestions, gave her the idea that others might like to hear about what, when and why she paints and draws; leading to the development of her own www.myhometownstexas.com

The Circus is coming to Town!

Tigers and Elephants and Camels in Aledo… Oh My!! Aledo Mayor, Kit Marshall is excited about the upcoming Kelly Miller Circus coming to town. “We didn’t expect to have another circus for a year,” said Marshall, “But when something like a circus falls out of the sky, and the timing is great and they have elephants and tigers, why wouldn’t you be excited?” In 2013, Aledo hosted the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus as a first time event for the city and it was an enormous success. This event promises to be even more fun with a different program including the addition of elephants and tigers! Obert Miller and his sons, Kelly and Dory began this travelling

[ circus in 1938 and devoted their lives to making it into the second largest big top show in the land. Relying on talent, hard work and a passion for maintaining quality standards, they were welcomed back to communities for generations. The circus’ more recent history includes a stint as director by David Rawls, a third generation circus performer, from 1984 through 2006, during which time he introduced new circus artists to the American public and maintained the high standards set by the Millers. In 2007, the show was purchased by John Ringling North II whose great uncles were the internationally known Ringling Brothers. Born into the most famous circus family in history, John learned circus operation from his father Henry Ringling North and his uncle John Ringling North. The consummate circus professional, John is always seeking ways to improve his circus and can be seen at most performances keeping a critical eye on the show.

cable and chain. Elephants will raise the “big top” as they have for every show since the circus’ inception.

Mark your calendars for March 15 and “Come One, Come All” for a fun-filled family evening at the Circus!

Sponsored by the City of Aledo 4H Club, the circus officially comes to town on March 15, 2014 and begins with the raising of the “big top” tent at 9a.m. that morning in Aledo’s Bearcat Park. Performances will be held at 2p.m. and 5p.m. with additional performances added if needed. The midway opens prior to show-time with games, bounce houses, animal rides (elephant, camels and pony rides) as well as concessions.

Advance Ticket Prices $10 adults - $6 children ages 2-12 Purchase at the Gate $15 adults - $7 children ages 2-12 Advance tickets can be purchased at Aledo City Hall, East Parker County Library, East Parker County Chamber of Commerce, Interbank, Aledo National Bank, Reading Friends and Brookshires Grocery.

The Kelly Miller Circus travels with a galaxy of stars from many nations, an exotic display of animals and a dizzying amount of equipment; all on a fleet of 36 vehicles. The waterproof canvas “big top” has a seating capacity of 1100 and measures 120’ long by 120’ wide and 40’ high; the colorful tent is supported by more than a quarter mile of heavy gauge aluminum tubing as well as several miles of rope, steel

familiarity and the picture being in black and white, he comes through as a vibrant character actor in his role. However, once again, I think the Academy might just put me in my place here as well and go with Leonardo DiCaprio for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Your pick? Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role: What can I say about this category? Let me start with Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett, Cate Blanchett. Ever the chameleon, Blanchett delivers again with her character weaving the storyline together in BLUE JASMINE. Ok, now that you know my pick in this one, let’s list the other fine ladies in this category. Amy Adams for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Sandra Bullock for GRAVITY, Judi Dench for PHILOMENA, and the great Meryl Streep for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Academy will agree with me on this one and award the honor to Cate Blanchett. Although… there’s hardly a loser among the nominees in this field. What say you? Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Five outstanding performances are given by all five gentlemen in this category. Barkhad Abdi for CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, Bradley Cooper for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Michael Fassbender for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, Jonah Hill for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, and Jared Leto for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. My pick for the night is Jared Leto. Again, we see a real story unfold in this film and is brought to transformation by Leto. Having

bucked Hollywood in the past, Jared Leto is back at his craft and portraying a memorable character in this North Texas story. Yet once again, I’m afraid the Academy won’t see it my way and will go with either Bradley Cooper for AMERICAN HUSTLE or Jonah Hill for THE WOLF OF WALL STREET. Your pick here? Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Sally Hawkins for BLUE JASMINE, Jennifer Lawrence for AMERICAN HUSTLE, Lupita Nyong’o for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, Julia Roberts for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and finally June Squibb for NEBRASKA. All these ladies gave memorable moments to their accredited film and personally, I was happy to see June Squibb fit perfectly in her role for NEBRASKA and back in the American public’s eye. Yet, I will have to say that any character that Jennifer Lawrence portrays always seems fresh and spot on. (Which is what is supposed to happen, right?) That is why my pick for this category goes to Jennifer Lawrence for AMERICAN HUSTLE. The Academy could go a few ways on this one, but I think we just might be in step here. Who do you think should nab this prize? As always, Hollywood’s biggest night could not happen without the contributions of the REAL talent. The producers, directors, lighting, prop, production assistants, wardrobe folk, script supervisors, editors, and so on and so forth. Those people that work extremely hard behind the scenes without the paycheck that the celebrities see, those diligent and artistic busy bees that love their craft and give up so much to make sure that the show goes on. We thank them all for their talent as well. FUN FACT: Gone with the Wind is the longest Best Picture winner, clocking in at 234 minutes. You could watch the shortest winner, Marty, two and a half times before Scarlett hangs up her ball gown.

Courtney Patton A Stand Out Voice for Country Music!

MUSIC

W

hen you click on the website for Courtney Patton it says, “This will be the future home of Courtney Patton Music – Stay Tuned,” and when you listen to her beautiful, soulful Texas sound you know that this is something you should definitely “stay tuned” for! The talented, singer/songwriter from Stephenville, Texas, frequents music venues in the area with friends such as, Jamie Wilson, Brandy Zdan, Adam Hood, Brian Keane, The Trishas and Jason Eady, her fiancé since September of 2013. She and Eady have been dubbed the “New Texas Power Couple” by folks who know in the music industry and the couple have been performing along-side each other for the last couple of years.

Courtney’s first full-length record,Triggering a Flood, came

out on her birthday in May of 2013, and has been racking up accolades ever since. “Just when I though there were enough good female releases already in 2013 to last a few years until the next wave of female talent rolls in, a new one popped up right in front of me and blew me away,” blogged a recent addition to the talented artists fan club. “Triggering a Flood is one of those I can listen to front to back and not get bored or need to skip a song here and there. Her soulful voice combined with the classic country elements and instruments is perfection!” Touted as one of the most in-demand, essential voices on Texas’ regional, independent roots music scene today, Courtney’s music is a combination of hard-country waltzes and ballads with a thread of ‘70s pop-folk sophistication.

Check the calendar on pages 14 - 15 for live music! “Music has always been a part of my life,” says the artist. “I’ve grieved with songs, I’ve celebrated with songs, I could set my life to a soundtrack. And, because of music and my relationship with it, I’m finally making a living because of it.” A young girl just discovering Courtney’s music echoes her sentiments saying, “I’ve never had a broken heart, but I’m thankful I have music like this to break my fall

when it happens.” Follow Courtney Patton on Facebook and Twitter to find out where she will be performing next and “Stay Tuned” for her website coming soon!

LODGING

WEATHERFORD HOTEL/MOTEL

Dining More traditional Mexican fare is also on the menu and prepared with the same attention to detail as the more exotic entrees. A full bar serving a variety of freshly prepared cocktails, beer and wine, sits inside the restaurant dining area and offers excellent happy hour specials. There is also an outdoor eating patio available during good weather.

Tequila Bar Y Grill – No Ordinary Tex-Mex Restaurant Tequila Bar Y Grill, located on Tin Top Road in Weatherford, is definitely not your run of the mill Tex-Mex establishment. “It’s wonderful, fresh and fun Mexico with a Spanish influence,” notes one appreciative customer.

If you are having a hard time deciding between all the appealing dishes, ask any of the helpful staff who will be glad to offer assistance. As an enthusiastic diner said, “They’ll help you with what you didn’t even know you’d been craving – I loved it!”

Tequila Bar Y Grill 2150 Tin Top Road Weatherford, Texas 76087 682-333-0750 tequilabarygrill@gmail.com Open: Monday – Thursday 11a.m. to 10p.m. Friday 11a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday 9a.m. to 11p.m. Sunday 9a.m. to 3p.m.

Champagne Brunch served Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3p.m.

DINING

The moment you walk into the spotless dining area, with its comfortable booths and an assortment of high tables with chairs, you’ll be greeted by friendly wait staff who seat you and hand over the menu on your individual i-pad (yes, you read that right). The menu is a delightful mix of fresh seafood entrees and authentic, central Mexico inspired dishes. The chorizo stuffed jalapenos with Oaxaca cheese are a standout along with the wonderful variety of seafood dishes. The delicious Ceviche Jaracho is made with tilapia, fresh lime juice, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos and garnished with sliced avocado and tostadas. Scallops are another outstanding offering and are pan seared and served with a brandy pineapple cream sauce. The tortilla chips are made fresh daily and served warm and salty, in a paper cone. 20 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine
