Day Here’s to Life’s Many Loves F. Scott Fitzgerald once noted that “there are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice.” The truth in that statement should be evident to every human being. What a lovely thought; that all of us have the ability to fill our lives with as much love as we will allow and experience the joys and sorrows unique to each of them. So, February 14th is a very special day…a day to celebrate love in all its varieties and forms. For many of us a special Valentine’s Day requires dinner out, flowers, cards and candy shared with a significant other but it can be just as memorable when celebrating with children, good friends or even a favorite pet. A dear friend of mine initiated a Valentine Day tradition when her three girls were little. Every year, on February 14th, she would spend the morning making sweet treats; cupcakes, decorated cookies, candies, etc. In the afternoon, just before the girls got home from school, she would set a table with her best china and silver and put out the goodies along with a big pot of tea and assorted trinkets that she had picked up for the occasion. When the school bus dropped them off, the girls would rush to their rooms and dress in their finest fancy attire and join their mother for a Valentine tea party. When she passed away her daughters were almost grown women but they have gotten together each year since and held their own tea party to honor the memory of their mother and those wonderful childhood events.

whole array of options available in our area for your Valentine’s Day. Restaurants will be offering special menu items and area merchants have stocked their shelves with everything from beautiful Valentine jewelry to boxes of chocolate and singing stuffed animal toys. Live music is being offered at many venues and, of course, there’s no shortage of romantic films being shown at the local theaters. Dads will have the opportunity for a special day with their little girls at Clark Gardens annual Father /Daughter Dance on February 4th or on February 12th at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens Daddy/Daughter event. Local hotels and bed and breakfasts are offering a wide array of Valentine weekend getaway options and most include flowers, chocolates and champagne along with your accommodations. Valentine cards are another charming tradition with a very long history. Antique shops sometimes carry an assortment of vintage cards festooned with lace, ribbons and buttons that make them a very special gift for someone special. But, even if you go with a contemporary card, it’s always a treat to give and receive a Valentine message. Wishing you a Valentine’s Day filled with love, laughter and chocolate!

are hoping for again. However, if romance flicks make you sick or you happen to be a bitter single malcontent during this time of unrequited love.. fear not.. there’s plenty of cinematic choices for everyone.

SHOWTIMES ARE SHOWING SOME LOVE IN FEBRUARY

It’s

that time of year again when sweethearts shuffle in to theatres across the country two by two for “date night”. This is also the time of year when light-hearted romance comedies or rom-com’s if you will, make the biggest splash at the box office. February has traditionally been the month of love and the biggest draw for moviegoers. Or at least, that’s what the studios

Opening Valentine’s Day weekend, How to be Single, will undoubtedly be the biggest rom-com of the month. A follow-up to the 2009 He’s Just not that into You, which made over 200 million dollars worldwide, this film actually looks pretty funny with a varied comedic cast. There’s a right way to be single, a wrong way to be single, and then...there’s Alice. And Robin. Lucy. Meg. Tom. David. New York City is full of lonely hearts seeking the right match, be it a love connection, a hook-up, or something in the middle. And somewhere between the teasing texts and one-night stands, what these unmarrieds all have in common is the need to learn how to be single in a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love. Sleeping around in the city that never sleeps was never so much fun. Starring Dakota Johnson,

Rebel Wilson and Damon Wayans, to name a few. Another romantic comedy out this month stars a huge name who is no stranger to the world of love. Sarah Jessica Parker stars in All Roads lead to Rome. Maggie (Parker) is an uptight, single mother and college writing teacher from New York City. In an effort to reconnect with her troubled teen daughter Summer, she decides to embark on a journey to a Tuscan village where she frequented in her younger days. Upon arrival, Maggie runs into Luca a handsome former lover who is still a bachelor and lives with his eighty-year-old mother Carmen . Summer (missing her “bad boy” boyfriend in NYC) and Carmen (secretly planning a wedding against Luca’s wishes to Marcelino, her one true love in Rome) impulsively steal Luca’s car and race off to Rome. Maggie and Luca quickly pursue allowing the two mismatched couples to spend some time together and develop a new understanding of each other. This film is in select theaters starting February 4th. As promised, there are other films than just the sugary sweet veneer of romantic comedies. For example, I’m surprised to find just how many horror and

thriller films that February has, (which just might support evidence for that single and bitter malcontent remark I made earlier). Nonetheless, there will obviously be other draws to the theaters even after St. Valentines has waved goodbye. Look for 3D films to be on the rise later in the month. National Parks Adventure 3D looks incredibly interesting as well as Gods of Egypt. Religious films such as Prayer never Fails and Risen, which is slated for national release on February 19th will also be big draws locally. Risen is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection and the weeks that followed, as seen through the eyes of an unbelieving Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a high-ranking Roman Military Tribune. Clavius and his aide Lucius (Tom Felton) are instructed by Pontius Pilate to ensure Jesus’ radical followers don’t steal his body and claim resurrection. When the body goes missing within days, Clavius sets out on a mission to locate the missing body in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem. Whatever your choice of viewing is this February, remember to keep loving each other, and always be grateful for the company you keep. Now, whose turn is it to buy the popcorn?! By: Jimmy Sorrells

Art “right” people in the art world. Galleries of our hometowns have many emerging artists. 3) Don’t be afraid to ask about layaway. Do you see something you love, and you could afford it if you could pay for it over a few months instead of all at once? Most galleries are quite willing to take payments over 4 - 6 months at no extra cost.

4) Don’t be afraid to ask about little discount. Artists don’t get paid if they don’t have sales. If you ask for a discount, you are basically asking the artist to take a cut in pay so that you can have his/her work in your home. They may take it though, especially if you are buying several pieces at the same time. These ideas are to get you started on starting your private art collection. Take your time and find the work you love at one of the many galleries in our area.

Art Collecting Part 2 – Collecting on a Budget You would love to own original art, but on a budget? How can you

possibly even think of buying art? Here are some ideas for collecting beautiful and affordable art that you can enjoy for years to come. In last month’s article, we discussed the dilemma of small, temporary living quarters and/or very small budget solved by starting small. But maybe you’re more settled and have a bit more space. You have downsized your home or maybe now in a nice apartment. You have pieces but you are wanting something nice. Before you run to that store in the mall that sells prints, think seriously about purchasing original art. Galleries of our hometowns have a surprising amount of beautiful and affordable art. These are pieces that are an intersection of what you want and what you can afford. Here are my tips: 1) Buy local. Even if your budget is tight, you are to purchase work from nationally-known artists

right here locally. So start looking at your local art scene. Visit the Galleries of our hometowns. Go to openings like Last Saturday Gallery Night and meet artists. Go to our local art festival like Harvest Moon Art Festival. Get your name on the mailing list of the galleries for the artists whose work you love, so they can keep you informed on new works. 2) Emerging artists. These are the artists who are just getting their careers going. In general, their art is more affordable than the work of more wellestablished artists because they don’t have a “name” yet. That doesn’t mean their art isn’t good. It just means it hasn’t gotten noticed by the

Theatre - Granbury For Sunday, February 14, GTC will present the classic love story An Affair to Remember, a 1957 film starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The motion picture directed by Leo McCarey is considered one of the most romantic movies of all times, according to the American Film Institute. Showtime that evening will be at 7:30 P.M. Centering on a couple who falls in love and agrees to meet six months later at the Empire State Building in Manhattan, the movie played heavily in the plot of the more recent romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle.

Granbury Theatre Company

has scheduled two special events for Valentine’s Day weekend on February 12-14, 2016, at the historic Granbury Opera House in Downtown Granbury. The events also include an optional dinner package at Christina’s Bistro on the square. On February 12-13, Carey and Dena Dyer will present “Happily Ever Laughter” at 7:30 P.M. each evening. Couples young and old are sure to be entertained and encouraged by this evening of comedy, storytelling, and charttopping love songs from decades past. “Happily Ever Laughter” has been twenty years in the making. Carey and Dena are celebrating their 20th year of marriage with a variety show that’s both hilarious and poignant. From their first

fight right after the wedding (seriously) to the date night they’d both like to forget, the Dyers honestly portray the ups and downs of romance. Carey, a Tennessee boy, and Dena, a Texas native, met in a touring group that performed in 46 states. Twenty-two years later, their credits include singing for President George H.W. Bush and starring as lead performers in a variety of professional live music theaters. In addition, Dena has enjoyed a successful career as a published author and speaker. The Dyers have loved raising their two boys in Granbury, where Carey also leads the music at Lakeside Baptist Church. They are looking forward to their first book together, Love at First Fight (a humorous marriage devotional book for couples), which will release in September with Barbour Publishing.

HEALTH = FITNESS + YOU + NUTRITION (FUN) The supplement to take three times a day Your Brain on Fructose: Fried Every day, most Americans eat about eight teaspoons of high fructose corn syrup, or about 27 pounds of it a year. We consume more of it than any other nation on Earth. It’s in your ketchup and your cereal and other processed foods, as well as baby food, soft drinks and places you might not expect to find it, like applesauce. And although we know it has been linked to obesity, diabetes, cancer and liver disease, we now know it has yet another significant influence on your body — it messes with your brain. A research study from scientists at UCLA just published in the Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism indicates that processed fructose can prevent the brain from repairing itself. The study was an attempt to understand the effects of fructose on people with traumatic brain injury, a surprisingly common injury. Nearly 2 million people a year in this country are diagnosed with such injuries, and about 50,000 of them die from it. The study was conducted with lab rats that first were trained to negotiate a maze. Then the rats were subdivided into two groups, with one group being fed plain water to drink and the other given water with fructose in it specifically designed to mimic a human diet that contains high fructose corn syrup. After six weeks of the diet, the rats were put to sleep and given the equivalent of a traumatic brain injury. Afterward, when the rats were put through the maze again, the ones that had been eating fructose in their diet took considerably longer — 30% longer — to negotiate the maze. “Our findings suggest that fructose disrupts plasticity — the creation of fresh pathways between brain cells that occurs when we learn or experience something new,” said Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at UCLA’s medical school and a member of its Brain Injury Research Center. “That’s a huge obstacle for anyone to overcome — but especially for a traumatic brain injury patient, who is often struggling to relearn daily routines and how to care for himself or herself.” Gomez-Pinilla’s team had previously identified other impacts fructose has on learning and memory. “Our take-home message can be boiled down to this: Reduce fructose in your diet if you want to protect your brain,” Gomez-Pinilla said.
