We’re Gonna Party Like its 1777!!

Publisher:

On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born. On July 4, 1777, the night sky of Philadelphia lit up with the blaze of bonfires. Candles illuminated the windows of houses and public buildings. Church bells rang out and cannons were shot from ships in the harbor. The city was celebrating the first anniversary of the founding of the United States. Each year we continue to honor this historic event with a variety of activities in cities large and small.

P. Boyce editor@myhometownstexas.com

While the Fourth is celebrated across the country, historic cities like Boston and Philadelphia draw huge crowds to their festivities. In Boston, the USS John F. Kennedy often sails into the harbor, while the Boston Pops Orchestra holds a televised concert on the banks of the Charles River, featuring American music and ending with the 1812 Overture. Philadelphia holds its celebrations at Independence Hall, where historic scenes are reenacted and the Declaration of Independence is read. Other interesting events include the American Indian rodeo and threeday pow-wow in Flagstaff, Arizona, and the Lititz, Pennsylvania, candle festival, where hundreds of candles are floated in water and a “Queen of Candles” is chosen to celebrate the 4th.

Locally, many cities across North Texas hold festivals and parties that end with a variety of spectacular fireworks displays that light up the night sky. Check out our activities pages for a list of the area fireworks and festivities. From Weatherford’s 1st Annual Spark in the Park to Hudson Oaks popular “Boomin’ 4th” and Granbury’s Old Fashioned 4th of July along with The 4th of July Celebration held in Glen Rose; patriotism is alive and well around these parts! Our second president, John Adams, would have approved. “I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival,” he wrote his wife, Abigail. “It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other...” Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the “land of the free and the home of the brave” so they can begin their American Dream. The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. It is this quality that helps make America a wonderful place to live and truly the greatest country on earth. Happy Birthday America!

A SIZZLING JULY AT THE BOX OFFICE The hot temps outside have nothing on the box office right now! No other month in the year offers such big hits and variety as July does. As it starts to sizzle outside, crowds break away into darkened theaters to cool down and catch this month’s biggest draws. With too many to mention, let’s start where it all begins – The Legend of Tarzan. The Legend of Tarzan, a massive undertaking by director David Yates, will no doubt start the summer off with incredible action for kids of all ages. It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for

a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash. This film is also in IMAX. Next up is The Secret Life of Pets. This high-action picture in 3D is the summer’s longest awaited animation film, behind Finding Dory, of course. This comedy is about the lives our pets lead when we go away to work or school. Set in a Manhattan apartment building, after the twolegged residents head for work and school, their pets gather to start their day, which consists of hanging out, trading humiliating stories about their owners, and helping each other work up adorable looks that will lead to more snacks. The head hound is a

quick-witted terrier rescue (voiced by Louis C.K.), whose position at the epicenter of his master’s universe is suddenly threatened when she comes home with Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet), a sloppy mongrel with no polish. The two soon find themselves on the mean streets of New York, where they meet the adorable white bunny Snowball (voiced by Kevin Hart). It turns out that Snowball is the leader of an army of pets that were abandoned and are determined to get back at humanity and every owner-loving pet. The dogs must thwart this plot and make it back in time for dinner. Mid-July brings us the sequel to a favorite American classic! Ghostbusters. This project is a reboot featuring an all-female cast starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Erin Gilbert (Wiig) and Abby Bergman (McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later, Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Gilbert reunites with Bergman and others when ghosts invade Manhattan and try to save the world. This film will feature original cast members and also pay special tribute to late actor and original Ghostbuster member Harold Ramis.

Okay folks, hold that British phone… we’re all in for a very special treat this month. Everyone’s two fave UK party gals are back in town with Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. That’s right, you heard correctly, they are back! Appropriate for their big screen debut, Edina and Patsy (Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley) are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more! Whatever your choice in films this month is, remember to relax and enjoy the experience. Also remember that you’re not having to pay the electric bill at the theatre, so stay for another show!!! Fun Fact: The five leading ladies in this franchise all have first names that start with the letter J! Jennifer Saunders (Edina), Joanna Lumley (Patsy), Julia Sawahla (Saffy), Jane Horrocks (Bubble), and June Whitfield (Gran). Jimmy Ray Sorrells

Art good painting has contrast in temperature from warm to cool, large to small, textures.

In Love In a previous article we talked about how art touches our life, but how about it’s strong emotional draw? An artist’s desire is to pull you into their work and when that happens you may experience the emotions of love. We would like you to think about love and artwork: • Vibrant. When we fall in love, everything is more beautiful. We see the world in living color. The colors are more vibrant. We see reality as somehow better than it really is. This is true in artwork. • Inspired. We see someone and are drawn to them. This is true of artwork. Uninspired work usually turns out to be more academic than full of life and energy. • Knowledge. When you fall in love you want to know everything about the person. You become an expert on that person. Also true of artwork. You want to know more about the artist and the story of the artwork. • Contrast. In every good relationship there is contrast. Contrast brings excitement and energy! This is also true of artwork. A

Someone can show you technical aspects of artwork, but a relationship with art must be developed on your own. You must spend time viewing art and meeting artists. The time is worth it since it adds a new love in your life. The Galleries of Granbury provide many opportunities to create one-on-one relationship with art and top artists. That includes visits to the galleries and the monthly Last Saturday Gallery Night free art walk where each gallery has a featured artist for you to meet and enjoy a reception celebrating their art. Here we are introducing a collaboration of copper artist Rita Marie Ross and phosphoresce (glow in the art) artist Stacey Watkins who will be featured during the July 30 gallery night at one of the galleries, Your Private Collection. Vibrant, Inspired and Contrast certainly with the daytime and night view of

their art. Come to the gallery to gain the Knowledge. Is it surprising to see how easily a good artwork can be defined by the essence of passionate love?

Hope you find your passion in art.

Singin’ in the Rain, beloved since the moment it premiered, earned the top spot atop AFI’s 100 Years of Musicals list and, in 2007, was ranked as the fifth greatest motion picture of all time. Singin in the Rain “pours” down delight, capturing the waning days of the silent screen era as they give way to new-fangled “talkies.” With The Jazz Singer premiere making Hollywood frantic, the studios are forced to suddenly change all the movie making rules at once, to accommodate sound. In doing so, they leave silent pictures — and some of their stars — behind. When Monumental Studios turns the silent Duelling Cavalier into The Dancing Cavalier, a musical picture, in order to stay relevant, they are faced with a problem: their star, Lina Lamont can’t sing, and can’t even really talk. Lina’s voice sounds something like nails on a chalkboard. Enter Kathy Selden, an aspiring actress whose dulcet tones are able to cover Lina Lamont’s — calling into question what it means to act, how credit is distributed, and what it means to get a fair shake in the movie business. Singing in the Rain includes some of the best-loved comedy routines, dance numbers and love songs ever written, including “Good Mornin’”, “Make ‘em Laugh” and – of course – the showstopping dance number, “Singin’ in the Rain” Time: Fri 7:30 PM, Sat 2PM & 7:30PM, Sun 2PM

The “Ultimate” Johnny Cash Experience, featuring Terry Lee Goffee covers the 50 year career of an American music legend. With his six foot two inch burly frame, sturdy jaw, icy stare and rich baritone voice, Goffee takes on the persona of the Man in Black in a performance that incorporates the guitar slinging body movements that were a Johnny Cash trademark. This is the show that has gained fans all across the US, Canada, Ireland and Britain. Goffee’s portrayal of the larger than life Johnny Cash will have you believing that you’re watching the Man in Black himself. Date(s): 07/29/2016 thru 07/30/2016 Time: Fri 7:30 PM, Sat 2PM & 7:30PM Tickets are available at granburytheatrecompany.org or by calling the GTC box office at (817) 579-0952. 8 - My Hometowns Texas Cultural & Entertainment Magazine

Peach lovers unite! The 32nd annual Peach Festival will take place in Historic Downtown Weatherford on Saturday, July 9th from 8a.m. to 5p.m. Here’s your chance to get your fill of the succulent, fuzzy fruit that made Parker County famous.

Last year more than 45,000 folks attended the one day event and the organizers would like to thank the City of Weatherford for all of the coordination and effort in helping make it possible. “Without the help of countless Police, Firefighters, EMS, and Traffic & Planning officers, we would not be able to offer this wonderful, safe, family-friendly Peach Festival each year.”

Once again, the Weatherford downtown area will be brimming with over 200 arts, crafts, food and activity booths, live music, children’s activities, the “42” Domino Tourney and the Peach Pedal Bike Ride. But, the real star of the day is the humble peach. How many ways can you serve this delicious fruit? Each year there seems to be a larger array of peach based goodies. Salsas, preserves, cookies, cakes, and of course, ice cream. Even the area Granbury, TX 76048

Water’n holes The hot days of summer are just about upon us. So what do you do when the sun scorches down with temperatures ranging from 90 degrees on up? Get to the nearest body of water. There are numerous choices between Granbury and Glen Rose.

Granbury City Beach Park – located 623 W. Pearl St. just off Business 377 in Granbury, no fee required open all year 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily The Granbury City Beach is a great place to walk around and enjoy the scenery, the boardwalk goes out over the lake, the swimming is carefree. Thatched hut pavilions and Kayak rentals. Lake Granbury has its own white sandy beach at the City Beach Park that is perfect for swimming and picnicking. The white sand was mined from right here in Granbury, once the site of a Cretaceous Age beach. The beach park also includes a spray park, SUP/ volleyball/bicycle concessionaire, and thatched roof picnic pavilions available on a first-come, first-served basis. The “Blue Hole” at Dinosaur Valley State Park – Glen Rose Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is also hiking, camping, and other area attractions like Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Acton State Historic Site, the gravesite of Elizabeth Crockett, widow of Legend Davey Crockett and the Comanche Peak Visitor Center where you can learn about nuclear power. http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/dinosaur-valley check this site daily for water conditions and to if tracks are visible. This is a wonderfully deep sinkhole at a bend in the Paluxy River. The “blue hole”, just past the entrance, is the best place for swimming in the park. The water depth measures from only 1’ to over 20’, right next to the dinosaur tracks. No lifeguards. Natural springs keep the pool full year round. Residents of Somervell County have been swimming in this refreshing natural pool since the late 1800s; even before the dinosaur tracks were found. Channel catfish or bluegill fish are found in the hole. The area around the hole contains wellpreserved tracks of Theropods-from Greek meaning “beasts feet”. The tracks aren’t always visible so check the website before you go. By: Marie Valden www.myhometownstexas.com

Shopping

At the most basic level, when you buy local, more money stays in the community. But buying close to home may have an even larger part to play in the economic health of a community than any of us are aware of. David Boyle, NEF researcher and author says, “Money is like blood, it needs to keep moving around to keep the economy going. When money is spent elsewhere, at big supermarkets and on-line retailers for example, it flows out like a wound.” So shopping at the corner store instead of the big- box prevents the local economy from “bleeding-out” and slowly dying.

What about the higher cost of local goods? After all, the prices at big-box stores are generally lower. That difference falls away once you consider the increase in local employment as well as the relationships that grow when people buy from the people they know. After all, it just feels good to give back to your local community and help support shop owners and small business people. Neighbors helping neighbors…it doesn’t get better than that!

SHOPPING

Shopping Local Makes Everyone Feel Good!

Another appealing argument for shopping local and foregoing online retailers can be made when you consider our basic human needs. A visit to your favorite boutique or local grocery is very often a treat for the senses. Take in the colorful and beautiful displays of local merchandise and unique items as you stroll around. Enjoy the aroma of candles and perfumes or the smell of a ripe peach, fuzzy to the touch and bursting with the flavor of summer. A journey out into the community might also result in running across an old acquaintance or some other serendipitous event that you would have missed out on by simply sitting in front of your computer screen. An added plus to all of this is the beneficial exercise boost when you choose to get up and get out!
